Better Homes Magazine | CONTENTS

welcoMe In this issue, we mark the start of Ramadan with some ornate majlis-inspired home furniture and accessories (page 8), and discover the go-to tabletop brands and designers of Sara Farah, founder of wedding gift registry White Almonds (page 9). We are also given a grand tour of Emirati Khalaf Obaid Al Matlaei Al Yammahi’s traditional home, which reveals his passion for interiors and landscape design as well as his strong sense of cultural and family values (page 18). Travelling further afield, we head to South Africa to explore a home inspired by Japanese architects, including Tadao Ando (page 22). Incorporating geometric forms and cantilevered concrete elements, the design cleverly sculpts the natural light entering the home. This season, we also check out the international fashion designers who are stamping their stylish visions on your home, from Henry Holland, who has launched his second collection for Habitat to Jean-Paul Gaultier’s latest fabric collection, Iresumé, named after what is considered the rock star of tattoo art in Japan (page 12).

GiftS to covet

Steal my Style gifted and simply thrown away, which is such a waste. Gift something that’s well thought of, that can be used and enjoyed, and don’t overlook the presentation and packaging. After all, gifting is an experience and the more beautiful the packaging is, the greater the sense of excitement it evokes. We always personally consult and guide our clients on gifting, as we feel people simply don’t have the time anymore to search for that perfect wellpresented gift. Service is key within White Almonds and we are excited to be expanding our gifting offering in the near future.

Design DNA

Keep it simple.

Go-to brands

I’m a fan of tabletop and home decorative accessories. My favourite designers within this sector include Sieger by Furstenberg for their unique and eye-catching modern designs; Marie Daage; and Rablabs.

Top tip for gifting

Gift something that’s useful and you know the recipient will appreciate it. So much is

Home decorative accessories, which always add the finishing touches to a home and creates a warm environment. Fashion and interiors are very similar. Just as you would accessorise your outfit, never forget to accessorise your home. The finishing touches can make a huge impact.

Colour combo to try

I have always loved lilac and light green for a colourful, fresh combination. When it comes to colours for interiors, I always prefer a calming subtle palette with pops of colour coming from accessories and pieces of art. My favourite basic palette is grey and I love blues, especially teal blue.

Top décor tip

Don’t overcomplicate your home. Let each piece stand out in its own right and create a calming environment. Choose quality pieces you know you will love for years to come.

Emirati Khalaf Obaid Al Matlaei Al Yammahi’s passion for design is inspired by his traditional life Words: Lucy Land Photographs: Muthu Kumar

“I

f I could go back in time, I would have studied architectural engineering instead of accountancy,” Khalaf Obaid Al Matlaei Al Yammahi says, ruefully. His passion for interior and landscape design is matched by his warm hospitality. Arriving at his Abu Dhabi home, I’m swiftly given the grand tour while being introduced to family members, including his wife’s visiting relatives. Later on, a young boy wanders into the outdoor majlis and settles onto his grandfather’s lap while we’re drinking coffee, eating dates and listening to Fairuz on the Samsung sound system. Sharing his home with his wife, six daughters and

two sons, Khalaf’s large villa is a celebration of traditional Emirati family values. He gave up the master bedroom to a married son; a daughter spends the week with her husband’s family while she and her husband spend weekends at Khalaf’s home; another daughter lives in the adjacent building with her young family, though it becomes apparent during the tour that Khalaf sees the home as a continuation of the main building. He also shows me the neighbouring home belonging to his brother. “I’m offering you everything to photograph,” he says, revealing his sense of generosity and openness.

Better Homes Magazine | ideas

As well as a blurring of boundaries between personal spaces, it’s difficult to gauge where the outdoors finishes and the inside starts in Khalaf’s home. He describes an outdoor majlis, with its barbecue pit, as a “tent”. Khalaf designed the entirety of his home (along with his brother’s home) so it distinctly illustrates his family values and sense of rootedness. “I use decoration and traditional seating to gather families,” he explains. “Without this communal seating, each family member would be in his or her own room with a mobile phone.” On one side of the villa’s main entrance, there’s another fully closed majlis where we enjoy fresh juice. On the other side of the ornate front door, there are rugs and an air-conditioning unit on the lawn. “In the summer we air-condition a tent so we can have the traditional atmosphere but at the same time it is comfortable,” Khalaf says. There are also a couple of aviaries on his property, one housing peacocks, while colourful stained-glass windows give a clue to the surprises within the home. Inside, there’s a heritage corner close to the entrance, which includes a gramophone, a vase, fabrics and a trunk among its curiosities. “If we didn’t have this collection, then our children wouldn’t recognise these things from our history.” The home tour takes in elaborate majlises for women and men, each large enough for grand parties and boasting opulent recessed ceilings supporting chandeliers, patterned wallpapers, large rugs and grand columns. There are numerous sinks

on marble stands with marble-framed mirrors topped with brass decorations lining the wall of a ladies’ majlis. “There is an art to washing so now we have the sinks open-plan,” Khalaf says proudly. In the men’s majlis, Khalaf has pinned traditional seating cushions to the walls to be used as backrests while simultaneously showing off their decorations. The bedrooms are also ornate and embellished. The eldest son’s bedroom features gold and mirrors while even the rooms in the new building boast beautifully lit recessed ceilings and are furnished with highly decorated sofas. Khalaf loves the luxurious quality of classic designs. However, he remains practical: “To have the new generation as a customer, I have to think about modern design. I veer towards the classic style but I like contemporary and I’m trying to work on a combination of styles to suit everyone.” During our coffee sitting in the outdoor majlis, Khalaf shows me some of his projects posted on his Instagram account, which includes residential and hotel properties, plus a 3m-high horse sculpture made from local stones and created for the Sheikh Zayed Heritage Festival, which now occupies a new hall within the judicial department of Abu Dhabi. Khalaf is clearly proud that his sculpture, which celebrates the region’s heritage, is on show for locals to view as contemporary art. It offers a link between local traditions and modern life. ead along the driveway of this South African city villa and you will instantly be struck by the horizontal elements that pierce the landscape. Softening the forms, is a stone-cladded wall, which offers a screen to the sunken fire pit on the entertainment level, concealing them from the street level. Inspired by Japanese architects, including Tadao Ando and the use of geometric forms, this house was designed for outdoor entertaining; to maximise the panoramic views; and to allow for natural light to penetrate the house. “The greatest amount of sunlight is received during the day due to the house’s north-facing

orientation so we maximised that,” reveals Mark Reilly, director of interiors firm ARCC. To achieve this, skylights were incorporated along with large glass pocket doors in most of rooms of the house. Privacy was also of paramount importance for the client, so the team had to bear that in mind while simultaneously showing off the views. Incorporating geometric forms and cantilevered concrete elements, the team concealed the house in a unique yet aesthetically pleasing way. “These elements create a powerful and sculptural composition to the house and greatly assist in sculpturing the natural light of it.'" Mark says. Japanese influences were used throughout the MAY-JULY 2017 | bhomes.com | 23

We used heavy materials such as steel and concrete and created light and floating effects home’s design. The entrance cube is enclosed by a custom-designed, fragmented brass front door, which floats framelessly between glass panels on either side. The lobby inside is masked by off-shutter concrete walls, set against a doublevolume matt black steel and bronze screen which surrounds the staircase leading up to the main living level. What’s more, the white steel screen used to mask the bedroom level was inspired by the Japanese paper folding technique of origami. “The idea behind the style was to use heavy materials such as steel and concrete and create light and floating effects, resulting in interesting juxtapositions.” The modern, sophisticated interior was complemented by a colour palette of neutral soft grey tones. The house is located on a very steep site, which allowed for its layered design. However, it wasn’t without its challenges. “Moving materials into and out of the house proved tricky,” Mark says. “We ended up having to use a crane to transport all the material into the house. We also had to drop the level of the driveway to the house by two metres to allow for sports cars to enter the site.” With privacy being a major factor for the client, the team also had to adjust the design of the house. The ground floor comprises a Bulthaup kitchen, dining area and a formal lounge area with sliding pocket doors opening up to reveal both the front and back views of the house so that each space can open and connect with the adjoining areas. Out

the front, the large sliding doors open onto lush landscaping, creating a Zen garden feel, which surrounds an infinity pool and Jacuzzi. Next to the pool is the sunken entertainment area above which, a floating concrete box provides a neat overhang for shade protection, while incorporating a skylight to sculpt the natural light. The same floor finishes that are used within the living area, are used in the outdoor space to accentuate the indoor-outdoor feel. There is also an informal lounge and bar area, a study as well as a fully equipped gym on this level. On the first floor, there are three double bedrooms as well as the main master bedroom. All of the bedrooms boast unrivalled views of the city and the mountain with the three double rooms featuring en-suite bathrooms enclosed within a glass box, providing privacy while not obstructing the views. The master bedroom has an open-plan bathroom layout with a featured freestanding bath and a large, glass-encased shower overlooking the city. The monochromatic palette of the rooms is offset against the imported Espresso Italian wardrobes within each, adding a layer of understated richness. With its modern natural design direction, which contrasts strong sculptural forms with a soft-shaped pool and elegant interiors, this house has not only maximised the views and light while ensuring privacy for its inhabitants, but its design can also be considered iconic.

Al ReeM IslAnd Cheffie Melhem, Senior Proper ty Consultant at Better Homes, on living in one of the fastest growing communities in Abu Dhabi

Al Reem Island is a world-class waterfront development comprising several residential, commercial and business projects. Built on the natural island of Al Reem, located 300 metres off the north-eastern coast of Abu Dhabi city, the development is connected to Abu Dhabi Island by two bridges and is located 25 minutes from Abu Dhabi International Airport. The island has gained international interest as one of the first freehold developments in Abu Dhabi, where foreign nationalities can buy leasehold (on an extendable 99-year leasehold basis) properties. The development plan includes amenities such as schools, medical clinics, shopping malls, restaurants, a 27-hole golf course, hotels, resorts, spas, gardens, and beaches. Upon completion, it is expected to accommodate nearly 200,000 people. Reem Island’s close proximity to Abu Dhabi city centre, Al Maryah Island, Saadiyat Island, and all major roadways make it the perfect place to call home. While it is close to all major amenities, one has the luxury of city living without being in the rush of the city. Convenience and ease of living make it an attractive option. Al Reem Island is also home to one of the Emirate’s architectural landmarks – the linked, Stonehenge-style Gate Towers. Also located in the heart of the island, with an imposing central dome, is the first French higher education institution to open in the Gulf, ParisSorbonne University Abu Dhabi. It is the university’s first international campus.

28 | bhomes.com | MAY-JULY 2017

When it comes to housing options, there is something for everyone, whether it be a spacious sea-facing luxury Nalaya Villa, a penthouse with sweeping views from the top of Gate Towers, or any of a vast selection of studios, one, two, and three bedroom properties. Sizes range from approximately 424 sq. ft. for a studio to more than 4,304 sq. ft. for a villa or penthouse. Rents on Al Reem Island can vary depending on the building and community. However, one-bedroom properties range from Dhs65,000 per year to Dhs115,000 in the more preferred towers. Two-bedroom properties can range from Dhs90,000 to Dhs170,000 while three-bedroom properties start from Dhs140,000 to Dhs200,000. Sales on Al Reem Island are popular at the moment with many offers and attractive off-plan investment options making it an affordable option to buy. Completed one-bedroom properties can now be bought for less than Dhs1,000,000. Two-bedroom properties can be found for Dhs1,300,000, while three-bedroom properties start from approximately Dhs1,900,000. Currently, Al Reem Island is home to Repton School Abu Dhabi, an outstanding international school, which follows a British education curriculum, as well as the aforementioned ParisSorbonne University Abu Dhabi. It is anticipated that 10 more schools will call Al Reem Island home in the near future. There is also an abundance of public transport on Al Reem Island – taxis and buses enable easy access from any area of the island. There are plenty of amenities in the residential and commercial towers with parking available for all tenants. Supermarkets, fitness facilities, swimming pools, children’s play areas, tennis courts, basketball courts, pharmacies, cafes, and restaurants are among the many amenities. Just a five-minute drive from the commercial district of Abu Dhabi, this residential and commercial development is one of the most preferred communities for western expats in Abu Dhabi. “I find it very easy to live here alone. There are so many of us around, and everything I need is easily within reach,” says Christian Haertel, a German consultant, who resides in an Arc Tower studio. “Even though I am here without my family and close friends, I still feel a sense of community and comfort. I frequently go to any of the many restaurants at The Galleria mall for a meal or evening out and don’t have to worry about being far from home.”

Head of secondary at Raha International School Kathryn Simms on ensuring students get to where they want in life

What sets your school apart?

Raha International School (RIS) is an International Baccalaureate World School catering for all grades from EY 1 to Grade 12. The IB curriculum is respected worldwide for its relevance to our increasingly multicultural and global society. We hold the most diploma programme courses among any IB schools in Abu Dhabi with 24 courses for our students to choose from in 2017/2018. These courses allow our students greater freedom of choice and ownership to create a bespoke programme that gets them to where they want to go in life. Our students have gained acceptances to London School of Economics, University of Toronto, UCLA, University of Amsterdam, University of Sydney, and New York University Abu Dhabi among others.

What’s your teaching ethos?

The student is at the centre of all the decisions I make.

What do parents need to know about admissions?

At RIS, we begin accepting applications one year in advance of the start of the academic year. We encourage parents to stay in touch and check the website regularly for information regarding applications. We also encourage parents

to submit applications early for their children as we experience waiting lists for most of our grades. Applications can be made by applying online through the website www.ris.ae. You can also schedule a tour online and come and visit our campus.

Is there anything else parents should know about?

I chose this school for my children before I obtained employment. Aside from its strong academics, I love how Raha promotes high principles along with core values such as productivity and openmindedness. I believe in the diploma programme, and the opportunities it can bring students in the future.
