You previously lived on Sheikh Zayed Road what drew you to this area? I could see Downtown Dubai being developed and saw that it’s a stone’s throw from the Burj Khalifa and The Dubai Mall [one of the world’s biggest shopping malls] so offered plenty of things to do. When I saw all the lounges and restaurants opening up I decided to make the move here; I could just see it developing in to a fun area to hang out in. One especially attractive feature is that it’s also possible to walk from one place to another, something that’s unusual in Dubai. Now that you’ve made the move, how do you find the facilities? Great. All of The Residences buildings

have gyms so I use mine everyday and have a trainer there three times a week, I also use the swimming pool a lot – it’s huge! There’s also a Spinneys right downstairs which makes such a difference; I used to have to drive to the shops every time I needed something, which was such a pain. On top of that, there’s a playground for kids and a park where concerts are often held during the cooler months. Where would you go out to eat here? This area is great for eating out. Karma Cafe is really good, I like the ambiance – it’s dark and moody with nice chilled music, and the outside area is a great place to hang out when it’s not too hot, it also has a view of The Dubai Fountains.

I often order their delicious bento box. The Japanese at Momotero is also very good, they have great sushi. For lunch I’d recommend Rivington Grill for hearty meat and locally-sourced ingredients. Plus there are so many restaurants in Souk Al Bahar . The Address Hotel has some great lounges, too, and sometimes I go to the Armani Hotel or At.mosphere restaurant in the Burj Khalifa when I have guests visiting to show them the amazing view. What kinds of people do you find live in Downtown Dubai? I would say most people here are young professionals, people who travel a lot, and those who enjoy going out of an evening or shopping. Here you’re only 20 to 30

minutes away from all areas of the city, plus you’re just 15 minutes from the airport. I also travel a lot for my job so it’s very convenient for me. Do you think the area is lacking in anything? The beach is the only thing that’s not on your doorstep. Previously I lived in Australia and I used to go an awful lot but here I don’t go very regularly – basically because I’d have to drive there. You have a colourful Asian theme running through your apartment, what inspired it? I collect Buddhas, I’ve always really liked them, in fact I still have a lot in storage in

‘Pictures give the space a personal touch, making it feel like a home away from home’
Australia (where I’m from) which I’ve found in different places all around the world. When I realised you could buy them here in Dubai as well I started buying them all over again. I’ve also got an ornate statue of Ganesh which came all the way from my travels in India. I’ve mixed these two with different styles of furniture and used red as an accent colour, which I think gives it that warm, Asian feel. Which is your favourite piece of furniture in the flat? I’ve tried to keep the furniture quite modern throughout but a friend of mine bought me an Arabic chair on Dubizzle (a local website). Initially it was a horrible gold and beige colour but, as I love the shape, we had it restored and covered and now it’s a favourite piece of mine. It’s a nice item and I think it works in this context, mixing both traditional and modern items together. I also really like the red sidestools positioned next to the chair – they were given to me as a gift from a good friend and I think they’re very Kartel/ Philippe Starck.

Where are your top shopping spots in the city for interior goods? I really like Global Village when it is on, you can get some very interesting things there, such as the interesting African-style sculptures you can see on my table. I’ve never been to the country myself but they were a great buy. THE One, Q Home Decor and Marina also have very nice pieces. I like to bring in different elements from a variety of places rather than kitting out a whole space from one store. Gives us some tips on how to make a rented apartment feel like home. I originally moved here with one suitcase and ended up with an apartment full of stuff! I just bought all the staple furniture I needed so the space was liveable and then gave it a little edge. I think all of the unique touches is what makes a place home; I really like art and photography so I have images in my lounge from family pictures to photos from trips to Venice and New York and also canvases of friends. They give the space a personal touch, making it feel like a home away from home.

Our need-to-know guide to life in one of Dubai’s most popular districts Renting and buying Many residents here favour a fast pace of life, which means it attracts young professionals who are in need of convenience, amenities and speedy access to the airport as well as the rest of the city. However, property varies in the area; South Ridge and Burj Views offer a range of apartments from one bedroom to three while 8 Boulevard has small but very reasonably priced studios. For a slice of luxury try Burj Khalifa’s prestigious apartments or The Residences’ spacious Arabic-style villas complete with private gardens and lots of space for the family. Whatever your requirements, would-be residents will be pleased to find that most apartment buildings in the Downtown area are home to private gyms and pools, plus a sizeable Spinneys for residents to snap up daily groceries.
Shopping and a bite With enough shops to cover 12 million square feet, shopping barely gets better than at The Dubai Mall (thedubaimall. com). Inside it offers every store you could ever need to fulfill the ultimate shopping trip, from designer names (Chanel) and high street brands (Top Shop) to
homeware stores (THE One and Q Home Decor) and beauty outlets (The Body Shop and Sephora) – and that really is to name a few. Novelty areas also include an entire souk filled with gold. You won’t struggle for a spot to eat, either: diners can choose from over 150 different restaurants and cafes serving cuisine from around the world and outside the mall, overlooking the Dubai Fountain, there’s even more choice. Mosey around Souk al Bahar’s (soukalbahar. ae) many eateries and lounges where you can smoke shisha while watching the magnificent fountain ignite the night sky.
Leisure time A stone’s throw away from your new home you’ll find the world’s tallest building – the Burj Khalifa (burjkhalifa.ae). Take a lift to behold spectacular views 2,500 feet up, then come back down to sea-level and visit the Dubai Aquarium inside The Dubai Mall which is home to 10 million litres of water and 33,000 animals including sharks, stingrays, deadly piranhas and cute otters. Other attractions inside the mall include an arcade, ice rink and cinema (which include luxury platinum movie suites where you can order food from a comfy reclining chair). Prefer a little relaxation during your time off? Check in to one of the many hair salons, nail bars and spas in the area – the spa at The Palace – The Old Town (theaddress.com) is well worth a visit for its luxurious decor and exotic treatments.
Schooling Find many schools within a three kilometre radius including Gems Wellington Primary School, (gemswps.com) the largest private kindergarten education company in the world and Hummingbird Nursery Dubai for pre-schoolers (www. hummingbird.ae). Alternatively, try the high-achieving Japanese School Dubai for primary students (www.japanese.sch. ae) or, just a tad further away, the Raffles International School (www.rafflesis.com) in Umm Suqeim which is home to two campuses and not one but nine nurseries.

Three years ago, the UAE was reported to have the worst carbon footprint percapita in the world. What’s more, it’s a well known fact that the residential sector in many cities accounts for more than 50 per cent of its ecological footprint – which means ever-so-slightly changing the way we go about our daily routines at home can have a positive impact on the planet. Follow our top ten tips to green living and sleep sound in the knowledge that you’re doing your bit to help the environment. 1. See the light First things first; ditch your regular light bulbs. Yes, the initial investment for energy saving bulbs comes at a higher cost, but in the long run your DEWA bill will be less and this small change will consume less electricity in the process. Snap them up at all local supermarkets across Dubai.
2. Get cosy Turn your air con’s temperature up a tad. If you increase it by just one or two degrees you’re unlikely to notice a difference yet, on a mass scale, such a change made within thousands of households can collectively save tank loads of nasty emissions from creeping into the environment – and significant amounts of energy. 3. Save water It may sound simple, but when brushing your teeth only let the tap run at the moment you want to wash your toothbrush or sink. Turn it off when you are blitzing your fangs and gallons of water – plus hundreds of dirhams a year – will be saved. 4. Recycle, recycle, recycle While Dubai is not yet fully accustomed
to the art of recycling, many countries now fine households who do not perform the eco-friendly task. Get in on the act by bringing two bins into your kitchen – one for recyclable materials (cans, paper and certain plastics) and one for nonrecyclables (food waste). If your apartment block does not have a refuse centre to dispose of your divided trash phone your building’s management and request a collection service. Alternatively, dispose of your items at recycling points (yes, they do exist) positioned outside Safa Park and Spinneys’ supermarkets. 5. Recharge your batteries If your home appliances, such as TV remote controls and kids’ toys, use batteries buy recyclable ones. In the UK the statistics are staggering; as a nation it disposes of 650 million batteries every year, all off which leak toxins into the environment. Purchase slightly pricier recyclable batteries, however, and you can re-use them for a number of years and, in turn, recover the extra expense. 6. Turn it off You know that little red light you see on the TV when it’s on standby? Well, what many people don’t know is that it’s actually eating into your pay cheques – and is completely unnecessary. Experts predict that we can save a whole 10 per cent on our DEWA bills and energy consumption by turning all electrical goods off completely. So, when you’re finished with your laptop or television, flick the main switch off instead of hitting the button on your remote or letting your PC hibernate. 7. Boil less How often do you fill the kettle to the top when you want a cup of tea? Most avidcaffeine drinkers fill it to the brim and

available in Dubai and inexpensive. Buy small solar powered chargers for mobile phones or laptops in Carrefour or kit out your entire house by installing a giant solar panel on your roof. With the summer’s 12 hours of sun you can fuel most appliances in your home with natural rays. Lust for light We ask expert Meenakshi Sharma, senior buyer at Lifestyle Landmark Group just how important the correct use of lighting at home is... How much difference can lighting make to a space? The proper use can make a room look bigger, taller or cosier. The options are endless. Lighting and shadows (when used perfectly in tandem) can also set a preferred mood to any space. How can lighting alter our moods? Manipulating light in different variations has endless results. For pleasant surroundings designers recommend using wall lighting rather than high ceiling-mounted lights. This is a technique you’ll see in spas and therapy zones. In public spaces like supermarkets, you’ll find a higher, uniform lighting structure, which opens up the space and encourages movement. Entertainment centres such as movie theatres often use wall and floor lighting to create a feeling of relaxation and comfort. What’s the most common lighting mistake at home? Using warm white lights in functional rooms such as kitchens or studies and using cool white lights in resting areas such as the bedroom. Warm white lights should be used for bedrooms as they create a peaceful and calm ambience. Cool white lights should be used for functional rooms to ensure people are alert and aware rather than lazy and relaxed. Explain your vision of a perfectly lit room... A dimmer switch in the bedroom will provide good lighting levels for daily tasks and can also provide a sanctuary away from the stresses and strains of the world.

Choose the right bulbs While we would always recommend eco bulbs to save energy, if they’re not available be aware of what each kind of bulb can project as it can drastically change the mood in your chosen room. Pick incandescent bulbs for a bright, sometimes yellow or tea-coloured light, or halogen for a bright white light similar to natural daylight – and use 50 per cent less energy in the process.

try ‘task’ lighting Need to focus or get things done? Apply this method to studies or kitchens to aid concentration. To achieve it, don’t go too bright (this creates an artificial atmosphere and can cause headaches). Light should be abundant but not over powering. Instead, make the most of natural light and opt for wide lampshades placed overhead rather than harsh spotlights. If one area needs attention, try a softly-lit desk lamp.

Make it Cosy Turn your main light off and create light on the floor of your room – clusters of candles, an array of lamps or fairylights along skirting boards will all prove effective. Make sure that no light goes upward, on to the ceiling which will open the room up again and reduce cosiness. • 51kgeggsflour • 10ml olive oil • 10g of salt • 450ml of water • 500g of feta cheese • 100g parsley, finely chopped • 1 cup of clarified butter • 1. Mix the flour with salt and crack the eggs in the middle. Add the water slowly while kneading the dough. 2. Continue until consistency is firm and August 2011
roll 10 dough balls, making sure two are slightly larger than the rest. 3. Crumble the feta cheese and mix with finely chopped parsley. 4. Sprinkle a small amount of flour on your worksurface and take the dough balls and roll them out into 1mm wraps. 5. Meanwhile, fill a cooking pot with water and add one tablespoon of salt along with half a cup of cooking oil and bring it all to the boil. Once done, separately fill a large bowl with ice water. 6. Put the wraps into the boiling water two at a time. Remove the wraps and immediately place them into the ice-water. 7. Once cooled, remove and place the
wraps on a clean paper towel to dry. 8. In a baking tray grease some butter and put in remaining unboiled wraps, applying butter onto each. 9. Fill the wraps on the tray with the cheese and parsley mix. 10. Add a layer of boiled wraps on top of the cheese and cover the top of it with cheese to create a second layer. Once complete, create yet another layer using the unboiled wraps. 11. Place in the fridge to cool for one hour then pre-heat your oven to 200 degrees. Remove any excess dough from the sides of the tray and place the pastry in the oven and cook for 15 to 20 minutes.

500g of beef tenderloin, sliced or cubed 2 medium-sized tomatoes Half a tbsp tomato paste 2 large aubergines ½ cup of butter ½ cup of flour ½ cup of milk Salt, oregano and black pepper A handful of finely chopped onion and celery stalks 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped 1. For the eggplant sauce, roast the aubergines in the oven until they are soft. 2. Once cool enough to handle, remove the flesh from the skin and strain them for 30 minutes to filter out any bitter juices. 3. In a large, heavy casserole pot, melt the butter on a medium-high flame, stir in the flour to form a roux and cook for two minutes while stirring. 4. Remove the casserole from the flame
and slowly whisk in the milk, until you achieve a thick white sauce. Return the casserole to the stove-top. 5. Stir in the pureed aubergines and simmer for 20 minutes on a low flame, stirring occasionally until smooth. 6. Season with salt and pepper. 7. For the beef, heat the butter in a pan, sauté the chopped onion, garlic and celery stalks, then add in the oregano. 8. Add the cubed tenderloin pieces into a pan and then cook for five minutes on both sides. 9. Add three drops of white wine vinegar along with the finely chopped tomatoes and cook together for five more minutes before adding the tomato paste, ½ cup of water and seasoning. Leave to cook for a further five minutes. 10. Place the tenderloin pieces on the bed of aubergine puree and serve. dessert

Kunefe dough • 100g 3 tbsp clarified butter • 40g buffalo mozzarella, sliced • Syrup (as required) • 2 pots of double clotted cream • or of kaymak • 2Apots sprinkle of pistachio, mint leaves and • red currant to garnish. 1. Spread out the dough mix using the melted butter. 2. Put a dollop of butter into a pan and add in the kunefe dough. 3. Add the buffalo mozzarella on top of the dough and cover it with yet another layer of dough. 4. Firmly press the dough together and cook both sides in a hot pan, with some more butter, until it reaches a golden colour and crispy texture. 5. Remove the pan from the flame and immediately add the syrup. 6. Serve with a generous garnish of ground pistachio, clotted cream, red currants and mint leaves.
