HOW TO : CLEAN TARNIS H ED SILVERWARE Shine your gorgeous c u tl e r y an d i t e m s with ingredients from your pantry

Ketchup: Squirt a small amount on a paper towel and gently rub over the tarnished areas. You can also let it sit for 15 minutes, before rubbing with a soft cloth and rinsing clean. If your candlestick, vase, or silver item has textured details, use a toothbrush to clean between the crevices. Cornstarch or cream of tar tar: Mix the ingredient with water, and apply on silverware with a damp cloth. Leave to dry before rubbing the item with a cheesecloth or rough towel.

Baking soda and aluminium foil: Place the silver on a sheet of aluminum foil (shiny side up) and pour boiling water over it. Sprinkle a few tablespoons of baking soda and clean with warm soapy water - after the tarnish moves from the silver to the foil. Buff dry with a soft cloth.

“At home, furniture is the backdrop against which we live our lives. WHAT ’S IN A SOUND?

Sometimes a certain sound can trigger a memory as well. “For some, it is the click of a much-loved dresser that adds sentimental value, and this sound can occasionally be comforting,� he says.

aurav Tandon and Kritika Rawat may be new to some of you, but this media couple have been taking the Asian TV production and radio industry by storm over the last few years. Gaurav, an award-winning food critic, and host of an Asian lifestyle TV show (Weekend Out) is a multi-talented man. It’s no surprise his wife, Kritika, a renowned Indian radio jockey for Radio Spice 105.4 FM, is anything but ambitious too. After all, as the saying goes ‘behind every successful man is a strong, wise and hardworking woman.’ The duo founded K Kompany (a production company) in 2008, and have been making airwaves ever since. Just over a year ago, they moved into a spacious four-bedroom villa at Jumeirah 3DUN Ă RRGHG ZLWK QDWXUDO VXQOLJKW through all corners. “Before we got this house, we checked a lot of properties, but the minute we saw the layout of these villas we loved it,â€? Kritika tells us. The most vital criteria was that the living room had to be large enough to entertain family and friends. “We do a lot of socialising at home, and it’s a rare FRPELQDWLRQ WKDW \RX Ă€QG YLOODV ZLWK a large living and outdoor space. We ORYHG LW DV VRRQ DV ZH VDZ LW DV LW Ă€WV us perfectly,â€? she says. Apart from the space, they appreciate the serenity the community offers too. The three of us sat at the comfortable, English pub-style bar area, which also happens to be Gaurav’s ‘man cave’. “It’s WKH Ă€UVW SODFH ZH GLG XS LQ WKH KRXVH We wanted it to have a dungeon feel, with the cladding and leather,â€? says Kritika. “The idea for this room was always in mind, and it was clear that friends were going to come here to chill, so if anything broke it would have to ORRN OLNH LW Ă€W LQ SHUIHFWO\ Âľ *DXUDY adds. Most of the pieces exude a retro feel; with the duo making sure the items in this area weren’t too polished. Brick-style wallpaper (from Danube) is used on one wall, with cladding right across it. The stones add character to the space, and colour as well, giving it a raw, rugged look. “We spend hours here, and all our family and friends invariably gather at the bar too, as we listen to music,â€? she says. It is their favourite spot in the house, packed with souvenirs from travels, a wine barrelstyle fountain from Thailand, artwork, DQG YLQWDJH VLJQV ERXJKW DW Ă HD PDUNHWV in South Africa and Melbourne. The couple’s ardent love for home shopping can be seen in pieces that hail from all over the globe. hangs right above one of the coffee tables in the so called “travel zoneâ€?. “The Turkish chandelier (from Istanbul) is a statement piece and adds a lot of colour and character,â€? says Gaurav. “Everyone said it was too big for the place we put it in, as it hangs quite low. We didn’t pull out any lamps, as that’s the grandeur of it,â€? Kritika adds. It’s a very personal thing to us, and although it may not be correct theory wise, we still go with it if we like it,â€? she tells us. The airy, widespread living room is divided into three areas, the travel zone – which is packed with memorabilia from all over the world and low-seating accompanied by two statement arm chairs – a palatial-style couch seating area, and the dining space. The living room is a mix of the couple’s Indian heritage, travels, and Kritika’s upbringing in the UAE. “We didn’t

Better Homes Magazine | HOME elegance, toning down the colour around. Curious about what the villa looks like upstairs, Kritika tells us that it’s undone. For every room in the house, the two picked a theme and stuck with it, but for some reason they just can’t decide on one for the master bedroom. The second bedroom was inspired heavily by Mallaca city in Malaysia, while the guest room downstairs boasts a neutral theme, as they entertain friends from all over the world and wanted to create a space that was warm and welcoming. A yoga room is in the making too, and at the moment, it is green, with a large soft rug which Kritika says she gets the best sleep on, as she awaits her trainer’s arrival. “Gaurav and I do yoga for 90 minutes HYHU\ PRUQLQJ DQG VSHQG WKH Ă€UVW couple of hours there, six days of a week,â€? she says. A TV room is also in progress, and this is Gaurav’s domain.â€? It’s going to have a big projection on the wall, and the TV is already on its way. We spend very little time at home, so over the weekend we like to relax back and watch a movie,â€? he says. The room is sure to be another favoured zone in the house, but what Gaurav and Kritika are eagerly waiting for, is a chance to entertain outdoors again. During winter, they spend most of their time entertaining family and friends in the outdoor space, comprising of a swimming SRRO ERQĂ€UH SLW DQG EDUEHFXH JULOO stand. 1. Dice the avocado and marinate with 2 tsp lime juice, a few coriander leaves and the chopped red onions. 400g white quinoa 1 / 2 l v e g e ta b l e s t o c k 1 lime, sliced 1 orange, sliced 1 tsp coriander 2 tbsp olive oil Black pepper and salt 100g tofu, sautéed P u r p l e v i t e l o t t e p o ta t o crisps (optional) 1. Cook the quinoa by gradually adding in the vegetable stock. Set aside to cool down to room temperature. 2. Slice the lime and orange into small pieces, and mix with the quinoa, coriander leaves, olive oil, salt and pepper. Top with the sautéed tofu before serving.

A unique leasehold community a l o n g t h e c o u n t r y ’s m o s t renowned road, reveals B e t t e r H o m e s ’ Wa f a a G h a n n a m One of the UAE’s longest highways, Sheikh Zayed Road, stretches 347 miles from Abu Dhabi to Ras Al Khaimah. The road, parallel to the Persian Gulf coastline, features both old and new properties all the way from Interchange 2 to Trade Centre roundabout. Dubai’s skyline is made up of many of these stunning skyscrapers, and the stretch has always been a popular one to live at, especially for residents who enjoy being amidst the nightlife, and hustle and bustle of the city. Other than the glam factor, the one element that makes the road unique is its leasehold community, whereby a private local or GCC national developer owns a tower ï as opposed to freehold communities where multiple landlords buy from the developer and lease their units out.
