Zenobia Thirion The marketing manager at Eldiar lives in a stylish five-bedroom villa in Khalidiya Village Can you sum up your décor? It’s a fusion of west meets east; a contemporary, minimalist style. I indulge by adding touches of luxury that are comfortable yet unique. What inspires you? Nature, my frequent travels, and the fashion industry. How do you show personality? I love the colour red so I decided to be bold and paint the dining room in a deep Bordeaux colour and combine it with dark wood furniture with clean lines, to keep it Zen. The stairway is painted in a calming blue, as this leads up to our bedrooms, getting us ready to sleep soundly at night. What’s your favourite space? Our patio is an extension of our living space. Being from South Africa we currently enjoy the great weather in UAE by spending time outside barbecuing and connecting with friends.

What should no home be without? Acqua by Dr Vranjes: this home fragrance reminds me of a cool and refreshing ocean breeze. It balances your mood, reduces feelings of stress, and soothes away tension and fatigue while enriching the air with purifying components.

Hughes sofa, price on request, Munna

What’s your favourite item? I bought a pewter sugar-maple-leaf tray, by the artist-sculptor Don Drumm, from the Getty Museum shop. This gorgeous piece of table art shows nature’s graceful and simplistic elegance. It makes me feel happy every time I look at it. How does Eldiar influence you? Where do I begin? I recently bought a chandelier because it has elegance and sparkles with sophistication. Our Design Studio offers interior design services, so I had some help turning my decorating passion into reality. The Studio’s attention to detail ensured that excellence was achieved. What do you want to buy? The Mangue table from Saccaro speaks to me and is simply gorgeous. It is a limited edition of only 70, representing the number of marine life species that depend on the mangroves ecosystem. It is designed by the talented Roque Frizzo. eldiar.com

Designer spotlight

The green pumpkin In honour of UAE Green Festival 2014, we look at the financial benefits of sustainable architecture Pumpkin planted its roots in North America in the spring of 2011. While partners Andrew Hughes and Tristan Thorvald Francis take care of business in UAE, there are now five consultants in the US, plus a team of interior designers, providing a global architectural outreach.

Eco earnings In UAE, wind, sunlight and reflections are all natural yet hugely problematic factors. If they’re not used to the building’s advantage they drive up the heat inside and fuel the need for air conditioning – which incurs unnecessary costs for the homeowner. However, they can be harnessed to build homes that sustain themselves and immediately offer profitable rewards. “People are concerned with costs more than sustainability, but the ROI is high,” says Tristan, project manager at Pumpkin, a member of RIBA. “Your initial costs are low and are paid back within three to five years,

after which you can reap the benefits over a lifetime.”

Seizing the sun How can homes harness these natural resources? “The 25° sun angle here, beaming straight down, perishes shadows,” explains architectural designer Andrew. “Huge savings can be made at a low cost simply by working shade into the design or constructing at an angle to the sun. “A lot of clients want a massive window facing the sun, but over five years the cost is five to ten times the amount you would otherwise spend, if the window was to face away from direct sunlight.”

Greener gardens “In built-up areas temperatures rise significantly from concrete pavements,” he continues. “This is known as the ‘heat island effect’. Because we can map the sun here, we can plant certain species of palm or shrubbery which will insulate the house from sun rays,

because plants breathe moisture into the surrounding air. The right vegetation can have low heat reflective properties, around 12% to 15%. And you’ve got a nice garden, too,” he laughs.

Powerful pools For the untrained, a swimming pool provides a relaxing dip, a fun splash with the kids and a scenic focal point in the garden. But for sustainable architects it’s also a powerful tool. While concrete reflects 70% of the sun’s rays onto a house, and increases the temperature by 7°C, water only reflects between 5% and 10%. As with plants, landscaping the pool near to the house can reduce the amount of heat reflected onto the walls, lower the indoor temperature and reduce air conditioning costs. “Air conditioning is a huge issue here, and it needn’t be,” says Tristan, ruefully. “By educating people on the benefits, we hope one day to be designing houses in UAE that are fully sustainable and can power themselves. The science already exists and it’s being used in other parts of the world. Dubai is such a modern city but in some ways it is so far behind.” wearepumpkin.com

One to watch See who’s catching our eye in Abu Dhabi FBMI

Buy a beautiful rug, help impoverished women As much as we’ve loved taking no-makeup selfies for cancer research, there’s another good cause we’re getting behind. FBMI is providing a lifeline to impoverished women in Afghanistan by harnessing the skills they already possess and offering a means of employment. Her Highness Sheikha Fatema Bint Mohammed Bin Zayed, the daughter of Sheikh Mohammed bin bhomes.com

Zayed Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, founded the initiative in 2010 to alleviate the distress of poverty and eradicate child labour. And the carpets the women patiently weave on traditonal looms are rich with colour, heritage and local materials. They’re made from Afghan sheep’s wool and vegetable dye, and all proceeds from the rugs go straight back into the initiative. fbmi.ae

FASHION IN THE HOME We can already hear the perfectly manicured nails tapping impatiently on the front row seats, as we near Fashion Forward this month. UAE’s answer to Fashion Weeks across the world, the four-day event, starting April 10, offers an exclusive preview of the latest trends and talent that will emerge in the region. Interior trends are hugely influenced by the fashion industry: what you saw strutting down the runway last year will soon drape itself over our sofas – which should be velvet, by the way, taking cue from A/W’s tailored velvet jackets (Dolce & Gabbana) and plush bow ties (Topshop and Lanvin). We take a look at the catwalk crazes that are making their way into the home this year.

Hotel Missoni, Kuwait

Missoni makes it mark

One of the most successful forays into furniture has to be from the Missoni empire. In 1981 Missoni Home launched with a luxurious fabrics range and the powerhouse soon made chevrons fashionable in the home. This rainbow zigzag print is now iconic across all home departments, from swimwear to sofas. “Probably the most prominent example of fashion serving influence on interiors is when Missoni introduced the ‘Missoni for Target’ homeware collection in 2011,” comments Dina Ibellini, head of marketing and visual merchandising bhomes.com

at Galeries Lafayette. “It is not surprising, then, that the mass commercial success of this range then filtered through and was replicated by other mainstream manufacturers who began using the chevron or ‘zig-zag’ print in their collections.” Over 30 years later chevrons are still popular. Causing some controversy, some argue that it’s a much overused look, while others herald it as the ‘new stripe’. Indigo Living’s spring/summer 2014 collection features an eye-catching District rug with chevrons in fresh citrus colours – go for lime green and white for a retro vibe. April 2014

Mad about monochrome A year ago black and white was a colourful trend for fashionistas. Monochromatic squares, spots and stripes graced designs by Caroline Herrera, Celine, Giles and Marc Jacobs for a classic yet playful ying-and-yang pairing. While its retained popularity in the fashion world, monochrome is now making a strong statement in the home. Bigger is better with block colours. So don’t play it safe with accessories; go for larger items such as white sofas with black stitching, black-and-white geometric rugs, high-gloss shelves, and black-and-white photography.

“To put together this trendy ‘mad about mono’ living room look, dress up a feature wall in striking black-and-white magazine-cover wallpaper – a fashion-forward backdrop for a clean-lined sofa in crisp white cotton-linen, a black metal bookcase and a fun zebra-print footstool,” advises Tina Thylen, THE One’s decoration manager. To carry this confident look, team with chrome and bright accessories. Coral is popular this year, as well as pastel pink and grass green. Avoid yellow, though, unless you like the brash bumblebee look.

Fashionable

FUR bhomes.com

Animal print and fur is a timeless trend that never seems to fully dissipate, but they both enjoyed a big comeback on the catwalk last year. As ever, fur sparked the age-old ‘real or fake’ debate. Whichever side you took, there was no ignoring the presence of fur on the runway for autumn 2013. Of the designers that showed A/W collections during fashion month, a staggering 70% used fur in at least one look. J. Mendel, Marni, and Giambattista Valli used the material in over 30 supersoft styles. Alberto Vignatelli, CEO and chairman of Luxury Living Group (representing Fendi Casa, Bentley Home, Heritage Collection, Kenzo Maison and Vladimir Kagan New York Collection), heralds fur as an art form, both on and off the runway. He highlighted several furs as de rigeour for home interiors this year. “As in fashion, furnishings are enriched by precious accessories in mink and marmot fur, made of vibrant natural dyes and shades,” he explains. “Also chinchilla yarns combined with precious cashmeres, and red fox and blue-frost applied on plaids and cushions.” If fake is for you, there’s plenty of choice. Thick bear-style brown cushions and throws are in – move them from the bed to the sofa as the weather heats up. April 2014

Moving

OUT A house isn’t home until you focus your attention outside Often labelled the last room of a house, the garden is just as important as the kitchen, living room and even the bedrooms. With sunny weather beating down, it’s the most relaxing spot – but not without the right furniture and accessories. Be it a cosy balcony, lawned garden or poolside patio, every outdoor area is integral to your home no matter how big or small it is. The way you decorate when you first move in can completely transform the look and feel of the place, and how and when you use it. A dedicated barbecue area in the garden will instantly entice family and friends together for al fresco feasts. Deep-seated armchairs and colourful side tables will create a comfy snug on a compact balcony. If you’ve just moved and don’t know where to go for garden ideas, Crate and Barrel has everything New Movers need to furnish their homes, inside and out. The company has a brand new summer collection for 2014 with colourful, weather-resistant outdoor furniture, in addition to the indoor spring range. Furthermore, those with new tenancy agreements will receive the perfect housewarming gift: 10% off across the store.

31

Beauty and the balcony Look beyond the bare balustrade and visualise a cosy seating snug where friends gather round for a gossip over tea and cake. Crate and Barrel’s Dune collection is an urban, modern seating range that blurs the boundaries between inside and outside living spaces – ideal for bedroom and living room balconies. Bar stools, armchairs, sectional seats, ottomans and nesting tables offer versatile arrangements according to your space. The weather-resistant upholstery protects against UV sun damage, fading and staining – essential requirements from outdoor furniture. Prices start at AED1,199. The world in your garden This year, interior trends have taken inspiration from all corners of the world. Home accessories for spring/summer 2014 are infused with colours, patterns and materials from the Amazon, Bali, Turkey, Hollywood and the Mediterranean. Get the global look with the Rocha dining and living collection, and opt for Turkish-tile blue seat cushions (from AED380). What appears to be beautiful ipe wood from the forests of Brazil is actually a realistic interpretation using weatherproof polystyrene with wood grain detailing and a charcoal finish. From the spring collection, Crate and Barrel’s array of cushions compliment the Rocha range wonderfully. They’re designed for indoor use, but can be brought outside to add colour to a garden party. Mix and match the bright, stripy Coletta, Amira, Naldo and Cortez Pillows (from AED239) for a tactile clash of indigenous tribal pattern. Holiday at home Capture the cool cabana look with Newport (pictured) – a sleek wicker lounge set with comfortable loveseats, armchairs, chaise longues and recliners. Resin wicker is a popular material for poolside patio furniture at beachside hotels and resorts. Soak up that relaxing vacation vibe by coming home to the low-slung seats of Newport and thick cushions in white sand or bottle green – perfect for family villas. The collection starts at AED1,949 for the Ottoman with padded cushion. Team with Geo Tiles Outdoor Pillows (AED159) in bright primary colours, a soft Adagio Ivory Throw (AED329), and a pitcher of cool lemonade for relaxing days in the sun. New movers can receive 10% off their entire shopping trip, on full-price items, at any Crate and Barrel store in UAE. Simply present a new tenancy contract valid for six months or less, plus a valid Emirates ID, to claim.

BLURRING THE BOUNDARIES Bring the outdoors in with these creative ideas

Everyone’s talking about blurring the lines between the indoors and outdoors. Nowadays, contemporary garden furniture wouldn’t look out of place in the living room or dining room, and four-poster daybeds lounging on shady patios rival real beds in the comfort stakes. We love the idea – after all, who doesn’t like an afternoon snooze by the pool? But this concept only has a six-month shelf life in UAE, when temperatures and humidity soar in the

summer. So, why don’t we flip the trend on its head and bring the outdoors inside?

frivolity while lush green palms and ferns inject jungle foliage to the scene.

1. It’s a jungle out there

The micro-trend for insects shows no sign of scurrying away. Once again it’s portrayed in an illustrative way, reminiscent of the creepy crawlies drawn in school science books. Butterflies are still popular but can border on the twee. Scorpions, beetles and flies will suit homes with a contemporary edge.

This year, Exotic Jungle is popular for the summer. Invite colourful macaws, funky cockatoos and boggle-eyed lizards into your home, where they’ll perch on windowsills, side tables and sofas in the form of candles, crockery and cushions. Golden pineapples, juicy papayas and plump grapes add to the fun and

4. Awash with coral This maritime micro-trend marks a refreshing change from the nautical blue-and-white stripes, anchor motifs and seashells we traditionally see in spring fashions. Illustrative coral reef colonies have gently edged their way onto fabrics, while skeletal polyp ornaments are a subtle yet uplifting addition to a room. Colours are simple, fertile and feminine – go for pastel pinks, muted oranges and soft yellows as well as silver and duck-egg blue.

3. Glass room design and installation, inquire for a quote, Glassrooms

5. Window gardens

3. Room with a view Glassrooms can transport the outsideinside back outside again. The company can create and install standalone glass rooms in your garden, glass extensions to your house, plus ceilings and sliding doors, using high-performance glass that block out 90% of UV heat. Here, modern architecture effortlessly blurs the boundaries between the two spaces. And you can enjoy being in your garden all year round. bhomes.com

It can be hard to grow herbs here, as the climate is too dry and hot. But salad fruits like tomatoes and peppers ripen well in the windows. Plant seeds in small pots of organic compost, and place in a suntrap window. Here, the glass will act like a greenhouse and incubate the plants, as long as your air-conditioning isn’t set to Artic. Notice how the shoots grow towards the glass, and rotate to give them even coverage. Alternatively, the bathroom is a great place for potted houseplants. The moisture from steamy baths and showers will keep them constantly hydrated and you’ll soon have leaves looking shiny and healthy again.

King of the kitchen Cook like a top restaurateur with these gourmet masterclasses By Eleanor Joslin

Scuola di Cucina By the time I’d licked the last drip of cherry icecream off my spoon, I’d planned a three-course dinner for the following Friday night. I just couldn’t decide which delicious recipe from Villa Toscana to treat my guests to. Chef de cuisine Stefano Viola had just given me a private tutorial, showing me how to make masterpiece ravioli parcels (in the shape of seashells, delicate roses and even the Burj Al Arab), a surprisingly simple tomato sauce and a steamy seafood soup, encased in a crispy pizza dough. After this mouth-watering culinary journey through timeless Tuscan recipes, I then enjoyed the fruits of my labour. Stefano cooks each dish and brings them to the table, where you’ll enjoy the anti pasto, soup and pasta you’ve helped prepare. It’s no wonder that some home cooks have come back 11 times to learn more about Tuscan cuisine.

“To encourage cooking at home is our goal,” says the Italian. “I teach how I was taught by my mum, when I was kid learning how to cook ravioli, pasta and soup. “It’s not about putting food on the table, but the rich atmosphere, the tradition and the lifestyle. “Don’t be like the Italian mum who spends all her time in the kitchen and doesn’t enjoy the party,” he laughs. “You should make what you can the day before. It will taste better, too, having been marinated for longer.”

OKKU@Home Ever wondered why the California Roll is called the California Roll? Why the pickled ginger is pink, and whether it’s ‘right’ to soak it in the soy? (It’s wrong, by the way.) My friends and I found out the answers to many sushi mysteries when we visited OKKU in Dubai, for a masterclass in sushi making. For Abu Dhabi residents, OKKU can come to you. The bespoke OKKU@ Home service takes takeout to the next level. Invite OKKU’s master sushi makers, expert mixologists and funky music into your house to create a fun and intimate setting for special occasions, family dinners or simply a girly night in. Back in Dubai, we fell in love with the miso black cod, which melted in our mouths, and we were spoilt with an endless array of beautifully presented sashimi and sushi. “I’ve been to OKKU before but to have your own private experience is amazing,â€? says Berna Jacobs. “I’ve OHDUQW D ORW DQG WULHG QHZ Ă DYRXUV DQG I love the music too – I’ve even got the CD to play.â€? Area review Holiday at home on Saadiyat Island Luxurious leisure, cultural and beachside facilities are on your doorstep

White sand, waterfront homes, world-class art, golf resorts and beach clubs are all top of the list for many holidaymakers. But residents on Saadiyat Island enjoy these luxurious features every day. The picturesque island is the flagship project of Tourist Development & Investment Company (TDIC), which explains the holiday-at-home vibe. A glistening swathe of blue sea greets drivers from Dubai, just an hour away. Crossing the connecting bridges, which take you just 500 metres from the mainland, you can look down at beautiful beaches, tree-lined walkways and Mediterranean-style villas. TDIC has created a hub of culture and leisure across 27 square kilometres, catering to every kind of hobbyist. At Saadiyat Beach Golf Club, golf lovers can play a scenic round at the Gulf’s first tidal and ocean golf courses – designed by Gary Player. Art lovers are eagerly awaiting completion of The Cultural District, which will surely cement the island’s masterpiece status. The collaborative designs of five Pritzker prize-winners will come to life with world-renowned cultural icons. On completion the city

will have its very own Louvre and Guggenheim, plus Zayed National Museum. Nature lovers can look out over the breathtaking natural landscape of Saadiyat’s tidal lagoons. Here, beautiful homes nestle in scenic islets, the waters lap at your garden’s edge, and boats bob gently on the waterways. For kids? On completion they’ll have a choice of nurseries, schools and universities. At the moment children can attend Montessori Nursery and Cranleigh School, and students can enrol at NYU Saadiyat Island campus. Beach lovers can enjoy Saadiyat’s public beach – already a firm favourite among locals and tourists alike. If you don’t like sharing, move into one of the island’s scenic waterfront properties. Luxury apartments and villas are available at The Residences at The St Regis Saadiyat Island Resort, Saadiyat Beach Residences, and Saadiyat Beach Villas. These homes are strategically placed near to high-end retail shops, supermarkets and restaurants. Furthermore, residents in Saadiyat Beach neighbourhoods have their own park, 25-metre swimming pools and a

range of community facilities. Apartments are available from studio size to four bedrooms. In Saadiyat Beach Residences, a onebedroom apartment ranges in size from 69 square metres to 86 square metres, with rental prices of between AED90,000 to AED120,000. Two-bedroom apartments, from 146 square metres to 158 square metres, rent for an average AED166,000. A three-bed at 194 square metres can command up to AED220,000, while a four-bedroom can fetch up to AED30,000 more, on average. In The St Regis, you can expect a two-bedroom apartment to rent at AED200,000 and a three-bed go for an average of AED250,000. Townhouses – which are very popular – offer three and four bedrooms. Larger families can live comfortably in villas here, designed with up to six bedrooms. There are three distinct styles: Arabian, contemporary and Mediterranean. Arabian and Medstyle villas are very spacious and have between three and six bedrooms, with the largest floor plan upwards of 1,400 square metres.

The Island is shaping up to be a magnet for tenants seeking affordable, comfortable living within Abu Dhabi’s main island. With the recent removal of rental caps resulting in massive rent increases, Al Reem Island provides respite to tenants seeking recourse to that eventuality. It offers them acceptable downsizing, where they can still find amenities like pools and gyms in most buildings. The rise in retail options – with offerings across the board coupled with bhomes.com

the sheer numbers – and the proximity to the new financial centre in Mariah Island makes it the frontier of the future in Abu Dhabi.

BH lust-have

India Mahdavi The furniture designer brings Grand Mosque materials to the table Have you ever gazed at the magnificent surfaces shimmering in the monumental Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and wished you could transport them home for daylong enjoyment? The possibility has now been realised, thanks to a creative collaboration between internationally renowned architect and designer India Mahdavi, Carwan Gallery and Iznik Foundation. Inside the Grand Mosque, you’ll see the latter’s signature

Iznik tiles, decorated with Islamic pattern and shining from the pure quartz content. The company’s famous Ottoman-style quartz tiles also form the colourful and tactile surfaces of India’s latest limited edition collection, Landscape Table. She recently visited UAE to showcase the project, which explores the heritage of old traditions and the ‘norms’ of structure, colour and sensory responses. india-mahdavi.com
