The summer has set sail This summer our homes are awash with the sights of the seashore. Pretty seashell prints, blue-and-white textiles and illustrative marine-life motifs will infuse your house with a breath of fresh sea air. The bathroom is usually the main beneficiary from such coastal trends, which tend to pop up in home décor at some point in the year. However, we’re seeing a refreshing change from the typical sailor-stripes and anchors – look out for floaty fabrics, delicate starfish and coral ornaments, and quirky fish-shaped plates. Look no further than Zara Home, pictured, for the complete seafaring set.

DESIGN FOCUS

Let the kids take control Keep them entertained over summer with these cool bedroom designs

With weeks of no teachers or homework stretching out in front of them, the school summer holiday is the best time of year for kids. However, its’ not the best for parents – you’re still at work, the hot weather makes it difficult to play outside, and they can’t stare at their Xbox all day long (though they’d probably disagree). Keep them stimulated with an adventurous bedroom, where they can get lost in space, jump through jungles, or become queen of their castle.

We’re off to the circus The world is full of make-believe adventures and enchantment when you’re young. For Disney-lovers who have a soft spot for Dumbo, Gautier has a new Piccadilly Circus bedroom design full of bright colours and playful accessories – perfect for children who love to clown around. Get the look with a Big Top bed canopy, plumes of bunting, toy boxes overflowing with juggling balls, and dazzling showbiz lights. “Circuses are often synonymous with fantasy, magic, wonder and enchantment,” says Jérôme Loizeau, product manager at Gautier France. “The circus-themed bedroom is based on a simple fact: around the age of four, children start to step into an imaginary world very frequently – where anything is possible. Colour and shapes therefore dominate as they build the dream of the marvellous fantasy world.”

Have fun in fantasyland Many little girls dream of being a princess, skipping round bhomes.com

the house wearing tiaras and their best party dresses. Better Homes Magazine asked the experts from Pottery Barn Kids how to make this dream come true: The first step to take is buying a bed with a canopy. If you don’t have room for a four-poster, you can attach a delicate lace canopy to the wall. Accessorise with a beautiful chandelier, a sun-burst mirror, decorative birdcages, a fluffy sheepskin rug and a pink throw. A Gustavian dressing table will make dressing up magical, and a pretty jewellery box will help your little princess stow away her treasures. Colour themes that work well are pastels like lavender, pink and yellow. For the summer try coral and white, or aqua with grey.

Sail on the waves of adventure While boys typically prefer blue it’s also a versatile colour as themes like astrology, fishing and sailing work well against it. A sailor theme is great when you live near the coast, and inspires seafaring adventures. Get the look with: A vintage speedboat bed is the ultimate focal point, made even more dramatic with a large nautical map on the wall and a wireframe ship hung from the ceiling. White with blue-and-red stripes is an obvious colour theme. Use navy blue and black for dramatic swashbuckling escapades; add stars for an all-American feel; while splashes of yellow and seashells are great for girls. July 2014

Fast becoming a landmark destination in the city, Shams Abu Dhabi on Al Reem Island is making its presence known. Look to the skyline and you’ll see the majestic steel arches of Gate Towers, modeled on Stonehenge and the ancient Greek Pantheon, reaching towards the heavens. Behind these towering pillars arcs the latest building to launch in this up-and-coming residential hub. Named after its prominent architecture, The Arc features three towers constructed in a unique curved design. It’s situated within the wider community of the Shams’ Gate District and has recently been launched by Aldar Properties. There is much to lure new residents: as well as an incentive of one-month’s free rent, there’s a built-in infrastructure and state-of-the-art leisure facilities on the doorstep. To satisfy my curiosity, Aldar invited Better Homes Magazine to tour the show-home. It didn’t disappoint, either. Aldar began the first phase of leasing in June 2014, five years after building started. The empty nests are soon filling up, and I spotted a few ‘Welcome’ mats and pot plants standing sentry outside closed doors, and cardboard boxes propping open others. Prices are reasonable, too, starting at AED61,900 for a studio, AED85,600 for a one-bedroom apartment, and AED130,900 for a two-bedroom apartment. I caught Mr and Mrs Henderson moving into a two-bedroom apartment on the 21st floor. They welcomed me into their new home where their toddler had been busy settling into the living room, turning it into a huge playpen while her parents unpacked around her.

You don’t need to leave the area, everything is here “We moved to the UAE just a few days ago and chose The Arc for the amenities,” they said. “We love the green park areas, the convenience of the shops nearby, the swimming pools and the gyms in the building. You don’t need to leave the area too often as everything is here. Once it’s finished it will look lovely, with landscaped gardens between here and Gate Towers. We’re really pleased with all the children’s facilities, too, with the play area outside and a childcare facility in Sun and Sky.” The couple laughed at the fact that they had no furniture, having focussed their attention on shipping their daughter’s belongings from London rather than their own. While they may be short of a bed, The Arc provides broadband internet already hooked up for immediate use – I suggested they take advantage and shop online soon. The apartment also comes with satellite and cable television and air-conditioning, and benefits from 24-hour maintenance and security staff and underground parking.

Yet to be furnished, the sizeable floor space of the empty living room, bedrooms and bathroom provide a lot of scope for décor, especially with their elevated views of the island. To get inspiration, I travelled a few floors down to the one-bedroom show-home. Here, potential residents can get a real feel for living in this thriving development. The views from the floor-to-ceiling windows hit me first, and I was immediately drawn to the balcony where I gazed out over the sandy desert-scape. To the left, The Arc curved around elegantly, encircling the communal gardens below, landscaped with floral borders, glistening swimming pools and charming cobbled paths. I could easily picture a young professional or married couple moving into this apartment, with its blue-and-yellow living room and pretty bedroom. I imagined them coming back from work, sinking into the comfy Crate and Barrel sofa and plump cushions, then looking out over the balcony and soaking up the peaceful views of the island. The perfect setting for that valuable moment of ‘me’ time after a busy day in the office. Aldar has mixed soft furnishings, lights and accessories from both local and international stores. THE One featured heavily – in the living room the sofa cushions, vases, decorative bowls, candles and glass-fronted cabinet all hailed from this popular shop. The Henderson’s from floor 21 said they would soon be heading to THE One, supporting a local business that started out bhomes.com

in Abu Dhabi, just as they are doing now. The newcomers will soon have plenty of neighbours to swap decorating ideas with, as there are 1,033 units to lease in this residential building – although these homes make up a small margin of the 45,000 that the Shams Abu Dhabi area will eventually accommodate. Aside from The Arc, the Shams’ Gate District includes the 74-storey Sky Tower and the 65-storey Sun Tower, which together are home to more than 1,000 families and businesses, plus Gate Towers, where three 65-storey blocks are topped by a bridge of seven penthouse suites. Why are such monumental, landmark buildings being built here? “Shams Abu Dhabi is one of Aldar’s signature master developments,” explains Paul Middleton, the company’s commercial executive director. “The Arc is one of Abu Dhabi’s prime luxury residences: it provides tenants with modern accommodation in a popular district of Abu Dhabi, with a range of entertainment and leisure facilities on their doorstep. It has a vibrant living space centred on the swimming pools and gardens, which are overlooked by half of the property. There are lush green lawns, aquamarine pools surrounded by palm trees, and cobbled walkways and jogging tracks. The Arc also has a number of enviable sports and leisure facilities.” The building has four swimming pools, tennis courts, basketball courts, a lazy river, saunas and Jacuzzis, gymnasiums (including private ladies’ gyms), and children’s play areas. is great for those that like to be active and stay in shape, as well those who’d like to try a new sport. Step outside and residents can shop, dine and pamper themselves in the Boutiq Mall, by Gate Towers, which has a number of restaurants, cafés, boutiques, salons, pharmacies and banks. Schools are nearby, too, including Sorbonne University. If that’s not enough, spend a lazy day on the pristine public beach opposite Sun and Sky Towers, which provides a welcoming oasis in the desert. “Further to the immediate sporting and food facilities within these developments, a five-minute taxi ride takes you to The Galleria Mall, where Zuma and the Bentley Bistro restaurants will provide further social outlets for the residents,” adds Mr Middleton. “The luxury retail and waterfront dining there will also be a huge draw for anyone living at The Arc.” So, who will be moving in? “The unit spaces of studios and one- and two-bedroom units will entice a younger audience who will play an active role in the Abu Dhabi social scene,” he says. “Prices at The Arc are highly competitive, considering the high demand for good-quality, luxury residences in Abu Dhabi. Units are leased on a first-come, firstserved basis. There will be a high demand from expats wishing to rent their home either for the short term (one to two years) or to remain within rented accommodation during their extended time in the UAE, perhaps purchasing their real estate in their home countries.” The Henderson’s agreed – they may want to buy in the future, but for now they’re extremely happy with their decision to move to The Arc, based on the good floorplans, state-of-the-art facilities within the building, and convenient shops and amenities nearby. Everything is close to hand, which is ideal for an expat family new to the UAE and in an unfamiliar city. With so much taken care of, all they have to worry about is buying that bed. If you’d like to move to The Arc, contact the leasing department of Aldar Properties on 800 25327 or visit property.aldar.com.

The luxury retail and waterfront dining here will be a huge draw

Happy Birthday! This year we’re wishing the pioneers of design many happy returns In the art world, it’s widely recognised that posthumous work is big money. And it’s no different in the design realm. When we think of world-famous collectible furniture designers, who springs to mind? Eero Saarinen, Charles and Ray Eames, Arne Jacobsen, Ludvig Mies van der Rohe, Hans Wegner, Eileen Grey, Poul Henningsen, Ernest Race, Isamu Noguchi, Verner Panton... There’s a veritable museum of 20th century designers rattling around in my head. This year celebrates a number of ancient birthdays. Industrial designer Christopher Dresser was born 180 years ago on July 4, Henningsen would have been 120 and Noguchi 110, while chair lovers around the world are celebrating the late Wegner’s centenary.

21

The Lighting Pioneer If there’s one word that truly describes Poul Henningsen (1894 – 1967), it’s ‘pioneer’. And it’s certainly deserved, too. In a world where we take light for granted, from back-lit kitchen cabinets to the dazzling Vegas strip, it’s hard to think of a time when the common light bulb didn’t exist. In the 1870s Thomas Edison revolutionised household lighting with the invention of the incandescent light bulb, doing away with the oil lamp. This was a huge turning point in history and for design. Hereafter, the bulb proved to be Henningsen's muse. He worked on diffusing the glare of the bare bulb after his mother complained about the harsh effect that electric light had on her face when she applied her makeup in the mirror. Mrs Henningsen's vanity brings to mind the famous phrase, 'behind every great man stands a great woman'... Interested in creating

glare-free lights, and recreating the warmth of the familiar oil lamp, his shades consist of multiple layers that direct light horizontally and vertically. In 1925 he teamed with Louis Poulsen to manufacture the classic PH Lamp shade, which layers three rings around the bulb for a warmer, uniform distribution of light. PH Artichoke, pictured, has ten tiers for increased diffusion. The original three layers remain the basis for light shades today – look at the contemporary designs by Yoshimi Kono, who uses the same principle. Ninety years later the design is still functional and its aesthetic is far from outdated.

Dressing Up Décor Christopher Dresser (1834 – 1904) was quite the revolutionary. The Scot championed the reform of design in the 19th century, especially within decorative arts and ornaments, by embracing modern manufacturing methods for arts and crafts. Today, he may not be as famous as his 20th century peers, but he was a prolific designer and academic in his day. During four months in 1876/’77, he travelled 2,000 miles around Japan and was treated as a guest of the nation by the Emperor, while he made his impressions of the country. A couple of years later he made 1,000 ceramic pots in just three years. His pioneering studies of Japanese art are evident in much of his textiles, metalwork and ceramics. Furthermore, we can thank Dresser for Anglo-Japanese-style teapots, which have come back into fashion this year. The one pictured was made two centuries ago, in 1879.

Intetra by Isamu Noguchi, West Palm Beach, Florida. Inset: A Japanese stamp honours Noguchi, circa 2004

Sculpting Design Last month I was in New York for business, and made it a point to visit Isamu Noguchi’s iconic Red Cube sculpture (1968), which looms outside the HSBC Building (Marine Building in Noguchi's day). Leaning in to its sloping sides, I sought its cool shadow in the city heat and stopped to reflect on the artist's lifetime achievements. Noguchi (1904 – 1988) is famous for saying: "To limit yourself to a particular style may make you an expert of that particular viewpoint or school, but I do not wish to belong to any school. I am always learning, always discovering." As one of the most versatile designers of his day (which actually spanned six decades) he certainly lived by this statement. The Japanese-American artist successfully produced pottery, abstract art, brush paintings, stonework, and even portrait busts for celebrities, but it’s his sculptural furniture designs and works for public spaces that we continue to remember him by. In the furniture world, he’s famous for the iconic Noguchi table, which made waves in 1947 due to its function as ‘sculpture for use’. When production ceased in 1973 it became an instant collectible. From where did this biomorphic design spring? With hindsight, there’s no doubt a collaboration between George Nelson, Paul László and Charles Eames, with prolific furniture manufacturer Herman Miller Inc. at the helm, was going to be anything but revolutionary. In fact, it led to one of the most influential collections of modern furniture ever produced. His work still lives on – the Noguchi table was reintroduced in 1984 and has never looked back, Knoll continues to produce his lamp designs, the Noguchi Museum pays unending homage in New York City, and many sculptures stand proud in public spaces around the world.

The Master Chair Maker Hans Wegner (1914 – 2007) was nicknamed The Master Chair Maker for a very good reason: the prolific cabinetmaker and furniture designer amassed a classic chair collection exceeding 500, many of which are now collectors’ items and museum pieces. If you’re not familiar with the late Dane’s chairs (or even revered classics by Eames and Panton) pull up a stylish seat in the ikonhouse showroom in Dubai, the only retailer in the UAE with such originals. Dorian Pauwels, partner and executive director at ikonhouse, highlights Wegner’s Wishbone Chair as a true classic. “The Wishbone chair is a centrepiece for Carl Hansen & Son because his career started with that chair,” he explains. “It translates everything he believed in when making a chair: functionality and durability.” After approaching the manufacturer with the ambitious design in 1949, a then cash-strapped Holger Hansen cycled for a whole day to visit Hans’ family home and learn more about the intriguing idea. Looking at the Wishbone, you’ll see that no piece is straight – a hard feat to achieve using a hard wood at 6% humidity, a factor Hans insisted on. Furniture is often made with wood saturated with 30% moisture. But once taken to a conditioned home, this wood should reach equilibrium of around 8%,

therefore drying and ‘shrinking’ in the joins, making the item wobbly for the user. “At 6%, this wouldn’t happen,” explains Dorian.“Wegner knew craftsmen are judged on functionality and durability, finishes and surface joins, so the wood had to be dry. For him, it had to be perfect.” The advanced process of steam bending produced the curves of the chair – even the back, which is plywood. This sloping back panel is difficult for people to copy and provides tell-tale signs if it's a replica. “The seat is simply raw paper – nothing fancy,” continues Dorian,

who held a celebratory design talk with Carl Hansen & Son's CEO Knud Erik Hansen earlier in the year. “It’s readily available, too, so it’s cheap. It will also last an eternity, unlike rattan, which dries after a decade or so. This is what minimalism is all about: form following function. It has to work first and then look nice. The prototype for the Wishbone was made in the 1930s, manufactured in the ‘40s and is still made exactly the same way now, despite all the innovations in technology. It works, so the process doesn’t need to change. This is why the chair remains so inspiring today.”

Be home safe over summer If you’re seeking cooler climes over the summer away from the harsh desert heat, make sure your home isn’t left open to uninvited damage.

Before your great escape We all have that niggling feeling when we go on holiday – did we turn the oven off? Did we lock the front door? If you’re leaving home for an extended period double-checking every safety measure is crucial. Better Homes Magazine asked the security experts at ACE what measures should be taken: “First you need to cover the basics,” says Kathryn Brown. “Unplug all electrical appliances, switch off electrical plug points and double check that all windows are locked. You can buy LED sensors, locks, fire alarms and burglar alarms to ensure safety from break-ins while you’re away. These will alert your neighbours and the authorities if an intruder tries to force their way into your property.” And what shouldn’t you do? “People often make the mistake of turning off their doorbells but this is an obvious sign that the house is unattended.”

Protect your garden If you leave your house empty, it’s not just opportunist thieves you have to watch out for. Garden furniture is prone to sun and wind damage, too. Fast winds, and the dust that blows with them, will affect frameworks and the colours of cushions and padded seats left outside, damaging their style, look and lifespan. “The risk of damage is very high – 80% of unprotected garden furniture will be damaged during the summer,” says Zayed Albaddad, CEO and partner at Albaddad International. “This creates not only an issue of aesthetic, but also of safety, money and frustration. Imagine upwards of 50°C heat being applied to wood or plastic every day for a prolonged period, or wiping dusty furniture with abrasive paper every hour. This is the kind of conditions unprotected furniture will have to endure in the summer, and they will fade, melt, corrode and scuff very quickly.” Preventive action is key. Look for furniture that can withstand extreme temperatures ranging from -70° to 80°C, rattan that will not fade, and seats that can be used around chlorinated water. Covers are important if you’re going away on holiday. While rattan is somewhat protected with a polyethylene coat other furnishings will need an acrylic-coated cover. It needs to be waterproof, anti-UV, anti-tear and fire retardant – ask the manufacturer if you’re not sure.

Insure for peace of mind Without home insurance, you may as well prop the door wide open. Whether you’re a homeowner or renting, choosing the right home insurance can be a minefield. Of course you want great rates, but you also need the most comprehensive coverage. After all, you can’t put a price on peace of mind. Whether you’re researching online or going direct to a national insurance branch, there are some vital questions you should ask before you accept the quote.

1. How long are you allowed to go away for? Some insurers will cease cover if your home is empty for more than 60 days. 2. What details of the mortgage will the insurers need? 3. Ask what contents are included and excluded from cover, including money. 4. Are outbuildings like the garage and garden shed covered by the same policy? 5. Ever had a ring stolen or lost your camera during a day out? Ask if you’re covered for contents taken outside of the house or if you need a separate policy. 6. Don’t forget you can insure your golf equipment (both at home and on the course) and a yacht under separate insurance deals. 7. How are lost or damaged items replaced? 8. Are old items covered, too? 9. Is your furniture covered while you move house? 10. Itemising the whole house would be a mammoth task. What do you need to list and what can you leave out? 11. When a freezer breaks down, suddenly you’re throwing an impromptu (and expensive) dinner party for the whole neighbourhood. Ask if your freezer contents are covered. 12. We’ve all locked ourselves out – and been able to laugh about it the next day. If your keys are lost or stolen, will the insurers pay for replacement locks and keys? 13. Are you covered for emergency accommodation if your home is damaged, until it’s fit to live in again? 14. Will you be compensated for lost rental income while you’re living elsewhere? 15. If you have domestic help, will your insurers help if you become liable for an illness or injury incurred while they’re working at your home? 16. What proof of purchase or value is needed – now and when making a claim? 17. How much excess will you have to pay if you make a claim? 18. How will your renewal policy be affected? 19. Will the terms or the premium alter? 20. If you work from home and it’s classified as a business, is this covered? Or will you need a business policy?

The feast after the fast Try these traditional family favourites either side of Eid chicken, and finally rolling them in the musakhan bread.” After tasting these dishes at my first Iftar, I know they’re well worth the effort. They’re also healthy, light and rich in protein, and virtually fat-free. For chicken musakhan, you should use the best quality chicken, the freshest ingredients, homemade sumac powder and fresh saj or markok bread. What’s the secret to samak saiadya, I ask? “The base of this recipe is the fish stock, so if you get that right the meal will be delicious and flavourful,” he reveals. “As Fairmont Bab Al Bahr supports sustainability and a green environment, we prepare it with local white fish such as sherry fish, hammra or jesh fillet.” fairmont.com

“In the UAE, families work long hours and barely get a chance to spend quality time together at the dining table,” says Ayoub Youssef Makdissi, senior sous chef at Fairmont Bab Al Bahr. “The holy month of Ramadan is all about quality family time, meditating and getting closer to God.” This is the first Ramadan I’ve experienced in the UAE, having moved from England in October. Chef Ayoub invited me to sample a traditional Iftar meal at his restaurant, and learn more about Middle-Eastern cuisine and customs. “Iftar is such an important time as it’s the first meal in Ramadan after 13 or 14 hours of fasting,” explains my host. “It is a very spiritual moment as families and friends gather around the Iftar dining table, and share memories of how our mothers and grandmothers used to prepare favourite home-cooked dishes.” He highlighted chicken musakhan (chicken rolls) and samak saiadya (baked white fish with rice) as traditional Emirati dishes to make at home, during and after Ramadan. These time-honoured recipes have been handed down through the generations, reminding Muslim expats of Iftars in their home countries. “These are typical homemade dishes but they do require a lot of time and effort,” advises the chef. “There are many components and methods to the cooking, such as making the stock, cooking the rice and the

Once the chicken is cooked, remove it from the stock, cool, remove the bone and shred the meat. In a cooking pot, heat the olive oil and sauté the sliced onion. Add the pine nuts and stir for five minutes; add the chicken and stir for 10 minutes; add the sumac powder and other spices and stir for two minutes. Keep aside to cool. Spread the chicken mixture on the bread and roll them like a sandwich. Place on a baking tray and poor olive oil over them, soaking them on all sides. Bake in a hot oven at 140°C/275°F/Gas Mark 1 for 15 to 20 minutes. When the bread is crispy and golden, take them out of the oven, cut into slices and serve hot with the Bewas salad and dibs rouman.

Samak Saiadya Serves 8 Preparation time: 90 minutes

1.5kg white fish fillet 1kg red onion 200ml olive oil 1.5kg basmati rice 50g cumin powder 50g cinnamon powder Salt, to taste 100g pine nuts 100ml lemon juice 30g white pepper For the brown fish stock: 500g fish bone 6 litres water 200g carrots 200g celery 200g fennel 100g leeks 800g white onion 300ml olive oil To make the stock, fry the fish bone in olive oil and add to a large six-litre pot of water. Slice the white onion, fry and add to the stock. Add the remaining vegetables and bring to the boil, reduce and boil for 35 minutes, then leave it to rest. Use this to cook the rice later. Cut the fish fillet into eight pieces of 180g. Marinate with salt and white pepper, lemon juice and olive oil. Sear the fish on the grill before baking in an oven for 15 minutes. For the saiadya rice, wash the basmati rice free from starch. Sauté 100g of sliced red onion before adding the rice. Stir for two minutes. Add salt, cumin and cinnamon, and the brown fish stock. Bring it to the boil then cover and leave it for 15 to 20 minutes until the rice is cooked. Fry the pine nuts and sauté the remaining onions. To serve, top the rice with the fish, and garnish with the pine nuts, onion and lemon wedges.

Chef ’s special Jean-Christophe Novelli was in town for a lesson in healthy cooking

“Can you cook with chocolate and chicken and have a healthy, salt-free and virtually fatfree meal?” JeanChristophe Novelli asked a hungry Better Homes team on his worldwide tour with Electrolux last month. A fat-free chocolate dinner? We had to know more. “Cooking should not be a chore,” urged the famous French chef. “It is a way of living and a great way to socialise at home, and it doesn’t have to be unhealthy, either. Today I will cook coq avec chocolate, with no oil, butter or salt and it will be very tasty.”

calorific butter, but it’s still a processed product, explained the Michelin-starred chef. When heated to over 80°C it loses nutrition and will change texture. Cool some heated oil in the fridge, he suggested. You’ll see it solidify, become thicker and stickier – this is what happens in your arteries.

1. Why olive oil isn’t good for you

3. Water is a great kitchen aid

“What do you do when you start cooking something tasty? Heat up some oil or butter in the pan?” Everyone nods in agreement. We assume olive oil is fresh and a healthy alternative to

“Steam is one of the most important cooking tools for a chef ,” continued Novelli. Cover the frying pan with a lid (or a plate), and add a splash of water if the chicken starts to stick to the

bottom – not oil, he reiterated. “This is not cutting corners or compromising on taste or skill,” he assured us.

4. Where to find natural salts Does the food need salt? Cheese is a natural source and will add flavour.

5. Why chocolate is the spice of life 2. Where to find natural oils So, no butter or oil... what do we use? Chicken has its own fat, he said, pointing at the thick skin on a dozen chicken legs. “Cook the chicken in a hot pan, skin-side down – with no oil. This fat is not bad for you because it’s natural fat. Slicing a fresh onion releases natural moisture from the flesh, which aids cooking. The same goes for capsicum.”

And then, what we’d all been waiting for – the ‘healthy’ use of chocolate. “Chocolate or cocoa powder is the queen of spice, especially with other powerful ingredients like onions and leeks,” said the celebrity chef. “One spoon of cocoa powder is not unhealthy; it’s fat-free, and is an important aromatic spice.”

6. How to be a Michelin chef Concluding the lesson, he looked around his kitchen and said: “Do you want to be a Michelin-starred chef? Appliances do half the work, and 50% of all Michelin chefs use Electrolux in their restaurant kitchens – which you can use, too.” Oh, so that’s the secret. Well, we’ll try... with some chocolate.

Area review The future’s bright for Al Reem residents While there’s a lot of work still to do, Al Reem Island is certainly taking shape – and a scenic one at that. Landmark towers dominate the skyline with Stonehenge-inspired columns; high-rise apartments have far-reaching views of the hazy coastline; while down below blue pools and green parks bring a burst of colour to the desert. “Reem Island is set to be the largest residential area in Abu Dhabi,” says Tom Williams, residential sales and leasing consultant for Better Homes. “Six years ago there was nothing there, so it has come on leaps and bounds despite a lull in the recession.” By 2014 it was initially predicted that the Shams Abu Dhabi area on Al Reem Island would have a fully-fledged marina to rival its counterpart in Dubai, acres of landscaped parks and gardens, and 45,000 new apartments. But that’s an ambitious target even without the recession slowing things down. While the development is now progressing at a more realistic pace, there’s already a sound infrastructure

on offer to those that move in. Situated within Aldar’s prominent Gate District, the Boutiq Mall provides clothing outlets, pharmacies, salons, supermarkets, restaurants and cafés. It’s within walking distance from Gate Towers, The Arc, and Sun and Sky Tower, all of which launched with world-class leisure facilities including swimming pools and saunas, state-ofthe-art gyms, basketball and squash courts and children’s play areas. “It’s a very modern area centred around apartment living,” he says. “Once finished it really will be a residential hub with great access to the city. There will be thirteen bridges connecting the island to other areas, providing great access. The planned golf course, hotels, schools, and shopping malls also make this a destination of the future.” So, who’s moving in? “It’s open to anyone,” asserts Williams, who’s recently moved into Gate Towers himself. “There are a lot of professionals wanting to live in an upand-coming residential area with access to the financial hub of the city. Families

also love the nearby parks, children’s play areas and swimming pools.” The monumental structure of Gate Towers has one-, two- and threebedroom apartments, plus penthouses on the skyline bridge which arcs across the columns. Rental prices start at AED80,000 for a one-bed. Opposite, The Arc is the latest tower to complete in the Gate District and is lease-only, containing studios and one- and twobedroom apartments. Here, annual rent for a one-bedroom apartment starts at AED61,900. Neighbouring Sun and Sky Towers have studios, one- to fourbedroom apartments and penthouses. Prices are slightly higher, with rent starting at AED100,000. By the Marina, Damac’s Marina Bay and Ocean Scape buildings are complete, with a third tower in the pipeline. These two residential towers have studios and one- to three-bedroom apartments. Prices start at AED75,000 for both towers. To make enquiries, contact Better Homes on 02 556 4122 or visit the office in Al Zeina.
