One to watch See who’s catching our eye in Dubai

Ponti in a new direction One of the leading chair designs of the 20th century is getting a facelift in the 21st. The Ponti D. 153.1 Armchair continues to be a lasting legacy of Gio Ponti, originally created in 1953 and still part of the late designer’s household furniture in Milan. The Italian maestro was multitalented in the field of design and became one of the most important architects, industrial designers, furniture designers and publishers of his generation. As with many designs after their creator’s death (Ponti passed away in 2012) they experience a surge of interest and manufacturers reissue classics to keep their legacy alive.

Molteni&C has re-launched the Ponti D. 153.1 based on the original drawings from the designer’s archives. Reclining on a brass structure, the armchair is available upholstered in a bicolour leather of blue and white or in Punteggiato fabric, designed by Ponti for Rubelli in 1934. Why do you like living in Jumeirah? I love the view from my home. My house is up high in an apartment building and close to the beach so I have a lovely view of the water. I love to watch all of the activity unfolding down below; it’s very inspirational and relaxing. What’s your home décor like? My décor style is eclectic. It encompasses a sense of flow and comfort and there’s an emphasis on colour and mood. How does your personality come through? My home is an expression of who I am and what’s important to me. I don’t display many personal pictures but I do collect items from my travels and viewing them shows me places and times that I want to remember. I like to think that my home evokes a feeling of comfort and individuality, because those are the things that matter to me. Describe some favourite items... One piece that I really enjoy is the Slipy Kangaroo by Dominique Capocci. It’s a sculpture of a kangaroo in blue resin and the kangaroo is wearing white underpants and holding guns in its paws. I love the idea; it’s whimsical and unique and it’s refreshing to have a piece like that to break up the monotony of a space. I also really like my Fashionista sculptures, which were designed by

Nele Pieters as part of her CanArt collection for Gardeco. They are small sculptures with duck-shaped bodies and strangely wrinkled little human faces with closed eyes and pursed lips. Some of them are wearing skullcaps decorated with flowers. They are so odd, and sometimes I find them comical while other times I find them sad. I like that they have different effects on me.

How does your job influence you at home? I think that Cities has inspired me to push the boundaries of design in my own personal space. I’m not so afraid to take chances and I’m always considering how I can update my home whenever a new piece catches my eye. What items from Cities do you own? I have several pieces from Cities in my home and I love them all. I’ve personally chosen many of the pieces that we have at Cities, often because I feel a personal connection to an item. If I’m not sure about including a line of items in the store I will try them out in my own space first. In addition to a few pieces by Nada Debs, I have some small accessories by Riviere and Kanaya, candles by Baobab, and a limited edition pink panther sculpture by French artist Richard Orlinski. I love to see all these different cultures on one table.

Top 5 trends These quirky concepts will catch your eye in 2015

1. Tropical Punch “We’re the only company in the country that truly offers fashion for the home, combined with affordable luxury, too. We don’t follow other trends – we are the ones setting them,” states Thomas Lundgren, CEO at THE One. So what looks are the eclectic home furniture ‘theatre’ setting for 2015? THE One has three new stylised collections for winter: Glamorama, New York Style and Tropical Punch. While Glamorama is rich with autumnal colours of plum and gold to warm our rooms on cooler nights, and New York Style recreates city drama, Tropical Punch promises to lift your mood with a sea-breezemeets-jungle theme. Coastal living is all about comfort and natural shades, which is given a colonial

twist here, mixed with natural tones and untreated wood. This cleverly incorporates a big trend for the year – natural materials. The bright accents draw upon the jungle themes prevalent in last year’s home accessories collections, where we saw parrots, exotic birds, fruits and palm trees creating colourful scenes on tabletops and kitchen linens. This is still kept to accent pieces for 2015, such as cushions and artwork. ´<RX ZRQ·W ÀQG WKHVH ORRNV DQ\ZKHUH HOVH ² ZH WDNH inspiration from everywhere, looking at magazines, at fashion and our current collections that are proving popular,” adds Lundgren. ‘Sometimes we just need to update a mirror by changing it from copper to bronze, and bronze has certainly been the metal to use lately.”

Only time will tell, but we’re hoping a penchant for fretwork in furniture design and architecture will enhance arabesque patterns not only in the Middle East but around the world, too. Fretwork – geometric patterns carved into low relief or into solid backgrounds – is synonymous with traditional Middle East design and is usually worked into wooden or metal furnishings, as well as architectural decoration.

4. Marbleizing This is something everyone in the UAE can get behind. While there’s a strong predilection for marble surfaces throughout the Middle East, especially LQ WKH KRVSLWDOLW\ EDWKURRP DQG à RRULQJ sectors, marble can also accent spaces subtly throughout the home. Marble lamp bases are already proving popular, as well as photo frames, crockery and trinket boxes.

2. Natural Materials This year the original state is also the end result, for we’ll be seeing more of salvaged wood, untreated wood and roughhewn stonework in furnishings and accessories. A very

fashionable Hobby...

Famous names hang on every wall in the Hobby household “That’s so cool,” grins Judith Hobby, with a strong New Zealand drawl. What is? A lot of things, it transpires, for this phrase becomes quite a mantra as she gives me a tour of her four-bedroom villa in Arabian Ranches. And she’s got authority on the phrase: sporting a spiky white crop with a smudge of pink, bright red lipstick and a black Flip dress designed by her own hand for her eponymous clothing line, she effortlessly radiates rock-chick cool. Perhaps it’s the influence of two teenage sons, or her travels around the world, or her succesful fashion boutique in Studio City... Whatever it is, she’s got spark. So, what’s cool in her house? For starters, her enviable art collection comprising of Hirst, Van Gogh, Miró and even an original Judith Hobby from her school days; the bright pink wall surrounding the swimming pool; wire sheep grazing in the garden (on which a podgy pug slyly cocks his leg); and a menagerie of pets, including four rescued cats, four pugs and one budgie with a murderous glint in its beady eye. “I’m really into my modernist art,” she says. “I have Keith Haring, Steve Kaufman, Lichtenstein, bhomes.com

Miró, Alexander Calder, Picasso and Dali, mainly sourced from the US or the UK or from our travels. We go to New York or shop online – I don’t have time for auctions plus you need to know what you’re doing and it’s scary,” she laughs. “The very first piece of art I bought was a Picasso at auction and I nearly vomited afterwards about what I’d done, although I do love it and I’m glad I bought it. It kind of got us going with our art collection, so that’s really cool.” But the really cool ideas in the house stem from stepping outside the Dubai bubble. Instead of designer ‘show-off’ kitchens and cramped maid’s rooms, the Hobby’s have opted for more sensible solutions. Rather than conforming to the developer’s vision of an ideal maid’s room (small and cramped and oft times windowless), they’ve built a detached maid’s quarters to the side of the property and transformed the designated maid’s room into a cosy guest room. By taking out the wardrobes that lined the right wall the excavated depth allowed for a small WC to be created, providing a compact yet private guest room. When I peer in, one of their many cats has made herself quite at home on the comfy bed. “Our newest cat Dexter will be asleep on our bedroom upstairs,” she laughs. “We found him on our garden wall with a limp and took him to the vets, where the limp miraculously disappeared. Now he lives upstairs permanently – I think he’s only been down once.” Judith takes us further into the villa, to the revamped kitchen where her pugs snuffle greetings, a ginger cat jumps onto the countertop and the budgie cocks her head. While she makes us tea and coffee, Judith regales us with stories of Betsy the budgie, aka the Black Widow, whose steady supply of companions have mysteriously fallen off their perch in the middle of the night. Other residents of the house include her lawyer husband, Gerard, and their sons, Alex and George, who are at work and school. As we chat in the kitchen, I admire its farmhouse style, with plenty of light, a huge block of an island and bare walls, January 2015

save for statement artwork by Damien Hirst. “I did the kitchen and TV room for AED30,000 with IKEA,” she reveals. With an initial quote of AED130,000 to take out the old kitchen and install the new one, they shopped around to find a more affordable solution. “So the finishes aren’t perfect, but I have Damien Hirst on the wall; I’d rather spend money on artwork than on my kitchen. It was installed in half a day and I think it’s amazing, it’s exactly what I wanted. I didn’t want any upper cabinetry so the room would be wider, but because the lower units are double width we haven’t lost any space and we still have loads of storage.” Meanwhile, she advertised her old kitchen on Dubizzle and it’s since been bought and shipped to Africa. “I hate cooking anyway,” she deadpans. “But the kitchen is the centre of the house where we all have breakfast and we discuss the logistics of the day. We’re all so busy: Alex is 18 and George is 14; Gerard has his job and I have mine; so it’s good to chat about what we’re all doing that day.” She says the ground floor of the villa is perfectly designed for a household with two teenagers. One side splits off into the TV room, office, kitchen and guest room – where the adults congregate, while the other comprises the living and dining room and the outdoor space – where the boys lounge. “We can have our own spaces so downstairs the house is a really cool design,” she adds, using her favourite adjective. In the living space a pair of Eames loungers and a couple of Barcelona chairs recline around a leather-topped coffee table from THE One, while on the left stands a long, bespoke wooden dining table made in Bali, a favourite destination for the savvy shopper. “I was in Bali 14 years ago and saw the carpenters making tables from teak panels and thought it was really cool,” she recalls, as we take bhomes.com

a seat on the transparent IKEA chairs which flank each side. “It cost me AED500 – it wouldn’t cost that now. But then I had to ship it over for AED1,000,” she laughs. Bali, India and Vietnam were prime locations where her and close pal Evelyn would travel to, buying clothes and accessories to sell for a small profit to friends back in Dubai, covering the cost of the trip. These adventures marked the start of what would become Judith Hobby Clothing, her clothing line based nearby in Studio City. “I stopped working in PR and went into business with a girlfriend because we wanted something to do but we didn’t want anything high pressured. Of course, we factored in beach days and nice dinners, which were lovely, but we did become a business and people would ask when we were next travelling. Then it became more and more difficult for us to find new and nice things so I decided to design a few items myself and get them made here in Satwa. I just designed what I liked, simple dresses and tee-shirts, and they sold out quicker than the items we brought back from India. Then I started sewing and made a whole series of clothes.” Four years later she has a loyal customer base who are lured to her studio by tea and a gossip just as much as by her clothes and fashion accessories. “It’s easy, comfy and relaxed because that’s what the clothing is about,” she explains. “I think you can look really cool and still be really comfortable; I like clothes that can effortlessly transition from day to night as I don’t have time to change and get all gussied up for dinner. You can come and have coffee and have a chat and chocolate, raid the fridge and chill out, and buy clothes if you want to. Or we might have a big fashion day and try everything on; it’s like a girly dream really and quite low pressure.” Despite the ‘low pressure’, she creates six to seven collections a year and continuously designs “off the hoof at home”. Her modesty extends to her home décor, too. “There’s nothing special going on upstairs, only untidy boys’ bedrooms,” she warns, even though the staircase is a gallery of collectible artists, the noisy atrium has been remodelled, the landing storage has become a space-saving wardrobe, and the master bathroom has been refitted with contemporary his ‘n’ her sinks. “We bought the house when Arabian Ranches opened nine years ago and we loved the modernist architecture, which was unusual back then,” she comments. “I love that it’s open-plan downstairs with large windows and natural light; many houses here are built with small windows and it’s so depressing. Emaar built the Ranches very well.” Emaar may have created a sought-after residential community with shops, schools and security built-in, but it’s the Hobby’s attention to detail and Judith’s creative eye that have made their house a home. Nine years on they can’t imagine living anywhere else – and neither, so it appears, can the stray cats of the neighbourhood, who like to wander in and take up residence on a bed or two...

Furniture retailers and interior designers have been experimenting with cooler tones like greys and light blues for a few years now, but in 2015 the cool tones are stronger than ever and here to stay. Most of us are used to seeing blue used in more classic furniture settings, but this year shades of blue will take on a fresh, new and darker vibe. My favourite is a blue that is almost black, but warmer and bolder without lacking depth. Metallic is back for 2015. The use of metallic elements in modern interior

design is not new but we are starting to see it being used more frequently and with a heavier hand. I personally love seeing shiny metallic metals in juxtaposition with furniture made from raw, natural materials. The best way to integrate metallic pieces into your home is with a beautiful pendant light shade or floor lamp. If you can handle more bling, try a metallic shaggy rug or copper throw pillows. We use a term called ‘tone on tone’ (a.k.a. monochromatic), which is all about layering, using the same colour throughout a space but in different saturations and textures. The easiest way to recreate the ‘tone on tone’ look is to mix and match patterns, keeping

it all within one colour family. Even though you will have multiple textures and prints the end result will be soft, calm and sophisticated. On the other hand, some people prefer a more natural look in their home décor, in which case wooden furniture with all its different tones and textures would be the answer to get that look. Moreover, wood that is lighter in colour creates an open and airy feel around your home. But the golden rule is mix don’t match. Mixing woods can be a balancing act. Balance both sides of your room with wood in similar shades. This grounds the space, allowing other tones to have a brighter or deeper contrast.

For example, oak reflects light creating a more expansive impression, particularly in smaller bathrooms. Pastel colours will also be in high demand – these warm shades instantly evoke a calming atmosphere. Textured surface finishes will add warmth and tactility to a space and have a lasting appeal.

Describe your retail presence in the UAE…

With Paris playing host to this year’s very first international design exhibition, the renowned MAISON&OBJET between January 23 and 27, BH talks to the owners of three French brands that favour the UAE Binôme

Binôme: We were at Design Days Dubai 2014 because it was a very interesting event. For us it was a new approach of selective customers, and we touched a lot of new countries that we wouldn’t otherwise reach, like Australia and those in Asia. Caravane: We met Alexandra and Emma, owners of [our UAE distributor] Comptoir 102, a few years ago. They were long-time customers so they knew us very well and they represented us perfectly. It seemed natural to support them in their adventure and try to establish a collaboration in Dubai and the Middle East.

customers. We saw that some people liked this approach – a new way to explain the design. Now we want to develop this in the UAE further and it is why we return [to Design Days] in 2015. Caravane: We quickly understood that Caravane’s casual yet trendy style, tinted with ethnic references, could completely fill a need [in the UAE] in the dynamic market of interior design. Gautier: Dubai is a great market for French design and Gautier is known here as a premium French furniture dealer with a huge sideline of contemporary furniture for every room of your house.

What’s new for 2015?

Gautier: We have been in Dubai for 2.5 years and we have been exhibiting at Index, known as the leading international design exhibition in the MENA area. We have more than 100 stores worldwide but being in Dubai is so important since it is considered a business hub.

Why do you like the market here? Binôme: For us, the market in the UAE offers new possibilities. In March we came [to Design Days] with our know-how and proposed this to the bhomes.com

Binôme: After the success of Mandarine, we have decided to deepen the work around lighting. In September we presented a new lamp called Fluide, which many people have loved since. For 2015 we are working on a variation of this lamp, and on another creation… We are working on an enterprise that works with faience. Caravane: Caravane is a casual (non-formal) yet elegant and timeless brand that emphasises the comfort and authenticity of materials. The current trend of French design is very minimalist, using noble and organic materials. Caravane continues to differentiate itself from this trend by keeping its colourful spirit of comfort. Our customers love to mix those two trends and create their own atmosphere at home. Gautier: Gautier’s new collection for 2015 is a range of bold and contemporary shelving and storage units, plus a premium master bedroom range with 500 different combinations of designs, fabrics and colours. We also have a new kids bedroom collection called Urban that provides an endless choice of layouts. Every piece of furniture is modular in order to optimise working and storage space.

Ingrid Michel, designer and cofounder, Binôme Binôme design studio, founded in Burgundy, is the brainchild of Ingrid Michel and Frédéric Pain. They studied the sculpting of wood at Ecole Boulle in Paris and nature remains central to their inspiration. Furniture takes on smooth, organic shapes yet the design duo mixes handcrafted processes with cutting-edge technology, such as combining smooth, light resin with untreated solid oak. Véronique Piedleu, owner, Caravane Since 1995 Caravane has been developing an eclectic, informal approach to interior furnishings. First came sofas and furniture, then came sleep and rest; more recently the company has turned its attention to reinterpreting tables. Ask the meatelier What pairs well with a full-bodied ratatouille and a Provençal polenta gratin? Perhaps succulent Charolais beef from Saône-et-Loire in eastern France... Many of us know Wagyu is a prime breed of Asian cattle but how does it compare to its contemporaries in France? Or what should you go for should you dislike Wagyu’s renowned predisposition for intense marbling? I had an informative lesson in beef when I dined at Red Grill, at Sofitel Downtown. Just like a sommelier, the meatelier – a veritable artists of meat – knew all there is to know about pairing my palette with the right breed and cut. “Charolais, from Charolles in France, is well known for having more meat and less fat,” said Navneet Sharma, pointing to a succulent red square he’d brought to the table. “Because it has less fat content you should cook this rare to medium. If you cook it well it

can become dry as what fat there is will cook off the meat. “Normandy beef from northern France is very well known for its unsurpassed marbling qualities. It’s got very fine fat streaks running through the meat, which makes it one of the best types of beef in France. It’s hard to buy here as it’s difficult to import, but it is one of the best. Cook this mediumrare to medium-well. “Angus from Australia is a superiorquality meat, full of flavours and very tender. This is best cooked mediumrare to well-done. “My personal favourite is Wagyu from Australia,” he revealed. “It’s a beautiful meat, and you can see the pearly marble of the fat, which makes it one of the best cuts of beef in town. If you’re looking for something really delicious to serve then this is the one to go for, cooked medium-rare

Grilled Beef Tenderloin with Ratatouille and Polenta Gratin Serves four to well done. Since it has enough fat in the meat you can cook this at any temperature you like. “Wagyu and Angus are superior meats because the cattle have been given very specific treatments to make sure the meat is top quality. Wagyu cattle are fed on grass and grains, given massages, and they listen to music to keep them stress-free. They are very lucky and live a very lavish life,” he laughed. Regardless of breed and the country of origin, when you buy steak from your local supermarket or deli, cook it according to the amount of marbling of fat that you can see. Take Navneet’s advice: if there is very little fat, cook it rare or medium-rare to avoid the meat drying out. If there is a lot of marbling, cook it medium to well-done. The fat will soak into the meat as it cooks to make it juicy and succulent.

4x220g cut of Charolais tenderloin 3 tomatoes 4 garlic cloves, with skin 100g white onion 150g eggplant 150g zucchini 150g red bell pepper 200g polenta (corn flour) 60cl chicken stock 10cl cream 2 sprigs of rosemary 1 tsp fresh thyme 50g grated parmesan cheese 20cl olive oil Preheat the oven and the grill to a medium heat. Heat the olive oil in a large casserole pan, then add half the rosemary and garlic (with the skin on) and let it infuse with the oil. Cut the eggplant, zucchini, red bell pepper, tomatoes and onion into small cubes. Start to cook the zucchini in the olive oil and remove once it starts to brown. Repeat the process for the eggplant and the red bell pepper and when they are all half cooked mix all of them in the pan and add the onion and the tomato. Cook slowly for 20 minutes. Boil the chicken stock in another pan and add the polenta when it’s hot; remove from the burner and stir it until the polenta is a smooth consistency. Add the grated parmesan, cream, the remaining rosemary (chopped) and the fresh thyme. Cook until a creamy texture is achieved. Take four individual clay ramekin dishes and fill with the ratatouille, then add the creamy polenta on top. Place them in the oven to gratin. Grill each piece of meat with a little oil and the remaining garlic cloves. Cook for 2.5 minutes on each side to serve the steaks medium-rare. Serve with a garnish of garlic and rosemary from the pan, and the polenta and ratatouille gratin as a side dish.

25g hazelnut paste 25g sugar 3g flour 40g egg whites 25g egg yolks GARNISH

50g lemon marmalade 50g crumble mixture Hazelnut dacquoise: whip the eggs and sugar then mix with the hazelnut powder. Spread on a cake frame and bake for 10 minutes at 190°C. Duja crispy: blend the roasted hazelnut with icing sugar, then mix with salt, crunched cornflakes and the Dulcey chocolate. Spread on the hazelnut dacquoise.

DULCEY CREAM

75g milk 75g cream 30g egg yolks 15g sugar

Praline cream: mix the butter and praline, add the cold pastry cream and whip it at high speed. Spread on top of the duja crispy and chill the cake in the fridge.

Milk glazing: melt the chocolate with the grape seed oil and the roasted almonds. Cut the cake into fingers (12cm by 4cm) and use the chocolate mixture to glaze the chilled cake. Dulcey cream: in a pan, cook the milk cream at 80°C with the sugar and egg yolks, then pour on the chocolate and gelatin and mix together. Chill in the fridge before using. Sponge cake: you’ll need to make this a day in advance. Blend all the ingredients together then siphon into a plastic cup and bake in the microwave on high heat for 30 seconds. Remove from the cup and cut into small pieces. Take your glazed hazelnut praline fingers and Dulcey cream from the fridge. Using a piping bag, pipe the Dulcey cream into a compact wave pattern on each finger. To serve, place each finger at the centre of a plate, dab small circles of lemon marmalade on the plate and sprinkle some small, ripped pieces of sponge cake and crumble mixture.

What’s new…

in the kitchen What are we doing in our kitchens this year? Cooking? Perhaps. Socialising? Certainly. Showing off? Like you wouldn’t believe.

The hub of the home is changing – advanced technology, new colours and rough textures are creating contemporary kitchens that are more sociable than ever before. Steven Pardoe, managing partner at Hacker, says he’s worked with homeowners in Dubai that have five or six kitchens in one villa. While the working kitchen stays behind the scenes, those situated ‘front of house’ are for showing off and entertaining, with large state-of-the-art appliances, hidden sinks and touch-control cupboard doors – to name just a few mod cons. “Kitchens are larger here and so people like bigger ovens and fridges as they look fancy,” says Pardoe. “In reality, one large oven isn’t as affective as two smaller ovens – but they don’t look as impressive.” Surprisingly, there isn’t too much advancement in technology to report – that works here, that is. While some countries in Europe, such as Germany where Hacker derives from, can programme and use appliances remotely via a mobile phone, this advanced smart-technology has not reached the Middle East – yet. Sure, you’ll see smart appliances being advertised, but in practice it’s hard – impossible, warns Pardoe – to connect to them on the go via your iPhone. However, the one thing that does work well over here is syncing the extractor hood to the oven hob, which automatically changes the extraction settings according to what you’re cooking. The main focus has been streamlining functions and making the process easy and convenient for the user. Modern appliances now have touchscreen controls, bigger cavities, are self-cleaning and back-lit with LED lights. Coffee machines can be programmed with profiles, so mum gets her latte and dad gets his Americano in the morning exactly how they like it. Touch control is even changing the way we open and close our cupboards. A modernised roller blind is replacing the traditional open-and-shut doors with an innovative product Hacker has dubbed ‘climbers cabinet’. A simple touch of a button will concertina-fold the blind up to reveal one shelf, while another nudge slides it up fully. A major change that could affect the way we cook in the future is the current steam oven versus microwave battle. The former is pushing the latter into extinction (or uselessness) as it outperforms other methods of cooking. You can cook different dishes

in just one steam oven cavity and the appliance will automatically determine how long each dish will need without losing any nutritional value. “Eventually they will wipe out microwaves,” asserts Pardoe. “Steam ovens are coming down and down in price because the technology is getting better every year and demand is going up. Customers that use them think they’re unbelievable. People are buying them more for the functions and convenience rather than because it’s a healthy way of cooking. “Textures on cabinet doors look amazing nowadays and will be very popular this year,” he adds. “You can recreate realistic planks of pine wood, have concrete-effect doors, and even real lava stone, which covers cabinet doors with a 3mm layer for a heavily textured look. We’re the only company in the world to have this and it’s very tactile, which people like. This year texture is all about being rough, natural elements and realistic details.” bhomes.com

“Textured countertops are also becoming a hot item as people move away from traditional polished silestone,” expands Ali Maarrawi,

– from cabinets covered entirely in chestnut leather to leathered silestone worktops. As a kitchen surface it has an incredible textured feel that’s rough yet soft. Hammered metal is another great alternative to laminate, quartz and granite. Taking inspiration from the hospitality sector, where working kitchens are floor-to-ceiling stainless steel, a metal worktop or island will add an industrial element. Texture and patterns can now be manipulated thanks to an innovative new material from Cosentino called Dekton. The family-run Spanish company spent five years and a whopping AED560million developing the advanced technology that allows for variations in natural stones to be copied and repeated, enabling surfaces to appear seamless. This applies to many surfaces, including swimming pools, interior and exterior walls, floors and kitchen countertops. “A major shortcoming of granite and marble is the tonality in the stone,” explains Maarrawi. “Each tile is different and has to be cherry-picked to get similar veins – which are actually salt veins and will crack open and deteriorate with age, especially from heat and sea air. These are natural stones and so, like people, they age and you see the wrinkles no matter how many facelifts they have.” Dekton is the “ultimate remedy” and recreates these natural stones with no imperfections. Patterns and designs can be mirrored across eight slabs measuring 320cm by 144cm each – compared to 120cm by 120cm, the largest possible slab of natural stone. Dekton is also thicker, stronger and virtually indestructible. You can’t scratch or burn it, which could be a lifesaver in a kitchen fire. “If it was Corian it would melt, Silestone quartz would resist but not as much as Dekton, so its is great. Aesthetically it is nicer and easy to use and it’s not that expensive – for big projects it could be cheaper than natural stone.” A Dekton worktop can be customised with any design and textured finish you want, such as leather, denim or wood finishes, arabesque patterns or embossed designs. Hammered metal and leather will be a popular look this year for showroom-worthy kitchens. Dekton is already proving popular and reaping some of that invested money back, with renowned architect Daniel Libeskind taking it up for his modernist sculptures and Zara creating its new fashion and home stores from this hardwearing, versatile material. Marsala “Nurturing and fulfilling, Marsala is a natural fit for the kitchen and dining room, making it ideal for tabletop, small appliances and linens throughout the home,” comments Leatrice Eiseman, executive director at Pantone Color Institute. Pantone’s colour of the year, Marsala, works well in kitchens as it draws upon natural colours found in many foods, such as plums, red grapes, red cabbage, aubergine and spices.

Black and gold These striking tones are decadent, luxurious and timeless – and a refreshing change from monochrome, pine or white marble. While blackchromed steel proved to be a popular finish last year, Alessi has launched a contemporary matt black and gold collection of kitchen accessories, featuring matt black plates and bowls and burnished gold fruit bowls. Swap gold with bronze for a more rustic look, or to complement existing kitchen fittings. However, avoid matt black with bronze because this palette will lack lustre.

Natural tones “We may have 90 different colourways but only five or six are ever really popular,” reveals Maarrawi. “These are usually pure white, beige and colours similar to naturally veined marble.”

Market Watch Affordability, supply, and price corrections A recent report issued by Colliers raised a key question about whether people can afford to live in Dubai. Rents grew by 22% this year but 50% of households earn below AED15,000 per month, so they can realistically afford an annual rent of AED43,000. Going up an income bracket, 35% of households earn between AED15,000 to AED25,000, so they can afford an annual rent of AED72,000. Both estimations fall short of many rent prices in Dubai. Of all the sales transactions recorded in 2014, 60% averaged AED2million while only 7% of transactions were between AED4million and AED5million. With mortgage rates hovering around 4% most homeowners were paying 35% less on their mortgage repayments than they would on rent – making buying a much more attractive and lucrative venture. But with the population growing at an annual rate of 5%, is there enough

supply to meet demand? Even though 22,000 new units were added to the housing stock this year, the supply is expected to average 12,000 per year over the next five years. This represents a growth of 2.54%. The good news is that the gap in demand and supply is expected to help property prices improve. Property prices in Dubai corrected by 5.2% in the third quarter of 2014 – according to the latest Knight Frank Global House Price Index. Two reasons attributed to this softening: the mortgage cap and the sudden fall

in oil prices. The mortgage cap has a direct tangible effect as it increases the amount of down payment required, thus suppressing demand. The fall in oil prices will have a short-term effect rather than a direct impact. In addition, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has given the UAE’s real estate industry a clean bill of health, which means the mortgage cap should now be reviewed.
