Welcome to the mAY issue

T

his issue celebrates designers of the region, whether they are from here or have made the UAE their home. From Lujaine Rezk’s Mirkaz collection, which is inspired by the now abandoned tradition of leaving worn-out furniture outside and KALO’s Macaron seating, which recycles crumb rubber (page 27) to Saudi Arabian furniture and product designer Ayah Al Bitar (page 32), who has made Dubai her home, we see how local designers honour traditional culture as well as explore the dynamism of its futuristic cities. We also meet the British design experts who are coming to the city this month to discuss different approaches to design at this year’s INDEX Design Series, now in its 27th year (page 34). On Jumeirah Islands, we explore a family home, which has been completely renovated to create a very bright, modern house (page 38), and we also return to London to see how interior designer Niloufar Bakhtiar-Bakhtiari has transformed an archetypical Victorian townhouse (page 44).

Design DNA

Shopping for rugs

We look for new ways of making. We do this by direct experimentation with materials and processes. This involves a lot of research and development, a playful approach and allowing serendipity to inform creativity, which leads to new work.

Prized possession?

As most of our friends are designers or artists, we often swap work or get given prototypes as gifts. The value of this becomes very emotive and sentimental. We recently swapped one of our Newton’s Bucket bowls for a beautiful wall clock by Fabien Cappello. However, as Silo is a duo with two locations, we have it on a timeshare.

Wallpaper versus paint

There is always room for both, and it really depends on the project. We also very much like tadelakt [a waterproof plaster surface made from lime plaster, which is rammed, polished and treated with soap] and sgraffito [a technique produced by applying layers of plaster tinted in contrasting colours to a moistened surface]. In terms of wallpaper, we

Take a vacation and go direct to the source. Use this as an opportunity to discover how and where things are made. We do, however, understand that people are busy and there are companies that will do this for you. One is Oyyo, a Swedish company working with weavers in their home countries to develop what they do into contemporary designs. Also, Adam Guy Blencowe and Marine Duroselle have just collaborated on their Motley Rugs collection, an amazing range of needle-felted rugs that push the envelope in techniques.

Colour combo to try

We often use multicolour in combination with multi-texture, but many of our projects use black, white and a solid bright colour, which becomes part of our identity.

Top décor tip

Spend time looking at the space and be creative. We think every space has to be treated individually. What might work perfectly for one space does not work for others. One thing that we recommend is to play with light and use flexible lighting that can be adjusted at different times of the day or according to your mood. Get to know what you like and express yourself.

Great tables start with a stunning centrepiece

“Start with where you want to take creative ideas from,” says Murphy John Tolentino, florist at IDdesign. “Be that photographs of existing designs; or the nature around you, which has abundant inspiration for floral designs.” On a more practical note, Murphy also advises noting the dimensions of your table. “Your designer or florist will ideally ask for the shape and dimensions of the table – you can always take a snap on your phone – before they offer recommendations on a centrepiece.” If it’s a dining table, Murphy recommends choosing a vase that is shallow so you can create a floral design that is long and low. “Bear in mind

24 | bhomes.com

that during meal times, the centrepiece will share space with dishes and cutlery so leave ample space to avoid inconvenience.” If it’s a centrepiece in the living room, however, you can have a vase that’s a little taller so that the floral arrangement is at an ideal eye-level when visitors occupy seating arrangements around the centre table. With Ramadan starting at the end of this month, it’s a chance to let your centrepiece also speak the same language. “Bring in the glistening golds and vibrant reds to your table. You can carry on the imagery of Ramadan lanterns with some candles on the sides, too.”

Ask A designer Our interiors expert solves your queries and shares her hidden gems in the city

Erin Alcock, founder of E A Design and official style guide for INDEX Design Series 2017 I would like to repaint my kitchen. What are your suggestions for colours I could use to make the area look larger and give a vivacious feel? The best way to keep the kitchen feeling spacious is to use lighter colours – if you go too dark it will make the space feel smaller. Consider keeping the walls mostly white with one feature wall if you’d like to go bolder. If the units are light coloured and there is a lot of natural light flooding in, it’s easy to add a bold feature wall. If your units are a medium or dark-coloured timber, though, stay with lighter, neutral tones. Check out the Lady range from Jotun for soft colour inspiration. Living in the sun all year round means that I can’t really play with my interior in response to changing seasons. How can I easily but effectively change the feel of my home to mark the different quarters in other ways? The easiest way is with decorations, flowers and artwork. You could have seasonal photographs in ornate frames or shadow boxes, which you alternate throughout the year. This offers a very easy way to introduce and alter both colour and feel. Flowers are also a great way to mark the seasons, such as sunflowers in the summer and red berries in the winter. You can get great artificial flowers from NDI Flowers at Bloomingdale’s Home and preserved flowers and foliage from Festive Decorators, which give a great natural feel to any environment. Have fun with decorations for the seasons – there are some lovely ways to do them and you could even get the family involved. Creative Minds is a great place for buying arts and crafts goods and can help a lot with inspiration.

I own a couple of properties that I rent out. What should I look to achieve with the design to make them welcoming and homely yet easy to maintain? Keep the furniture neutral and add colour with accessories and loose items – that way it will be easier to modernise without having to buy new furniture. Make sure that you don’t make it feel too feminine or masculine, so stay away from pink and red. Remember that if it’s a longterm rental, people will likely want to add their own touches. Ensure that everything required is there if you are renting it as fully furnished and make it fully functional. Bring lots of texture in with the loose items to make it feel homely, and add mirrors to make it feel spacious. Also, look at the clientele you’re trying to attract; if it’s a onebedroom apartment in Dubai Marina, for example, then you can add touches suited to a younger and more modern potential tenant.

mY LITTLE BLACK BOOK FOr sTATEmEnT pIECEs: The Emporium in Al Quoz is one of my favourites for eclectic statement pieces like large carved-wood mirrors that you won’t find anywhere else. If you’re looking for more modern pieces, try PF Group and Fabiia.

FOr wALLpApEr: Muraspec and NGC Nafees always impress with their designs and use of patterning. For really unusual high-end wall coverings, I would look at Kens and Company.

FInIshIng TOuChEs: My go-to shops for accessorising are Obegi Home, Tribe and Bloomingdale’s Home. Accessorising is so important as it’s what brings the room together. It’s also key to add some texture with nature so include flowers and plants.

BEsT-KEpT sECrET: I rarely group accessories in even numbers; odd numbers just seem to work better.

The problem solver Product and furniture designer Ayah Al Bitar on creating solutions and keeping things simple Interview: Lucy Land What inspired The Sanctuary? The Sanctuary [a pre-prayer storage solution] was inspired by my own culture. I enjoy creating a solution for something from my own heritage. It was something that was missing in my household and life and in many other households and lives.

Saudi Arabian product and furniture designer Ayah Al Bitar founded Ayah Al Bitar Design House in September 2014; and launched her first collection of floor seating cushions early May 2015. The young designer focuses on breaking cultural boundaries with her thoughtprovoking concepts and designs. We catch up with her at her Dubai Design District studio… What sparked your interest in product and furniture design? I have always paid attention to details and the way people interact with their environment. I believe that the aesthetic of furniture and product design is important, but the function is necessary. Looking for a way to create something that makes people’s lives easier is a problemsolving job – and that’s what I do. How has your international background inspired your furniture and product designs? I completed my studies in New York. Living there taught me a lot about the different cultures that exist in this world, and how product and furniture design does not have the same function in all cultures. What was the biggest lesson you learnt from your time at Parsons The New York School of Design? To complete work within a deadline and to look outside the box. I learnt to expand my vision of design and think further. Describe a typical working day at your Dubai Design District studio… If I don’t have any meetings outside of the office, I arrive at 9am and check my emails. I then see each of my employees to discuss their work separately and see to each one’s tasks and needs before working on my designs. Tell us about how your interest in Saudi topics of women’s rights have influenced your work… My classic piece, The Wisada, is a floor cushion that works best in multiples, prompting a dialogue about social and gender equality issues in this region in a comfortable and relaxed manner. Its intention is to make room for humour, frustration, optimism, faith and satisfaction.

How would you describe your personal style? I am a very simple person. I like to dress neatly and simply, and my style is also reflected in my design and in the way I run my company. I like things to be organised and practical. Wherever I go, there is a dress code for everything, whether it is a client meeting, an outing with friends or a casual day at work. What are you currently working on? A new collection that will be released soon – this new capsule will debut during Ramadan and has several items within it. We also have several exhibitions coming up. When you’re not working, where can we find you? I like to spend time with my family, my friends, and when I have time I work out. What’s on your bedside table? Nelatonin – the only thing that helps me sleep. What is your philosophy on life? We always dream of changing the entire world, but sometimes changing a single soul is enough because inside every human, there is a world. What are you most proud of so far? I am proud of my company, where I have reached so far and the pace at which it is growing. For a young designer, I am quite ahead of things and it is sometimes overwhelming. What’s next? I plan to keep up the good work, grow more and reach out to an international crowd by building a reputation just like I have so far in the Arab world. ayahalbitar.com

Meet the Get the lowdown on three British design experts taking part in conversation seminars at INDEX Design Series 2017 Henry Holland Who? Henry Holland grew up in Manchester, studied at the London College of Printing and worked as a stylist and fashion editor before becoming a fashion designer. Why? Known for his daring designs and quirky collaborations, Holland has recently launched his second collection for Habitat. Signature style: Maximalism and slogan pieces. He gained fame with his Fashion Groupies T-shirt designs with bold rhyming slogans such as I’ll Tell You Who’s Boss Kate Moss and Get Your Freak On Giles Deacon and has introduced a slogan cushion in a nod to his fashion label’s House of Holland’s 10th birthday. Artistic inspiration: Using his recent catwalk inspiration of Romany gypsies and Josef Koudelka’s photography of traveller communities from the Eastern Bloc as his reference point, the out-there designer has opted for deliberately clashing styles for his latest Habitat collection. On our most wanted list: The wool Folklore rug, which is hand-woven in the renowned rug manufacturing district of Panipat in India. The pile is cut at different heights to create a 3D effect. In his words: “I love fashion for the way in which it can reflect who you are and what you are about. I feel like a home is very similar in that way and so dressing your home is a similar process for me to dressing myself. I want things that feel personal to me, and that are a reflection of my partner and my personality. I think that as a creative person working in this industry, you pick things up from all around you, from visual references to experiences, travel, people and stories. I love to tell stories through my clothes and it is people and their stories that have inspired me the most.” On coming to Dubai: “I’m very excited about meeting thousands of designers. I love meeting new people, exploring opportunities and I also love to travel. I have been to Dubai several times before but not for years. I know that it is developing and changing very fast so I’m excited to see these changes for myself.” Where to find him at INDEX: Holland will kick off Design Talks Day Two by discussing the crossover between fashion and interiors.

Bethan Gray Who? Bethan Gray’s family hails from an ancient Rajasthani clan that over centuries migrated across Arabia before settling in the Celtic heartland of Wales. Gray, now based in London, draws on her rich cultural heritage and craft traditions of East and West for her iconic contemporary designs. Having taught at Central Saint Martins, she values the importance of nurturing the next generation of talent and works extensively in the Middle East. Why? Winner of the Best British Designer award, Finanial Times’ How To Spend It described Gray as, “A British design name on every clued-up aesthete’s radar.” She is introducing Mohamad Reza Shamsian, a highly sought-after, masterful Iranian artist, to the contemporary design world. Signature style: Warm, timeless and elegant. Gray combines a passion for luxurious natural materials such as leather, marble and solid wood with an extensive knowledge of craftsmanship and the latest manufacturing technologies. Artistic inspiration: The similarities between the craft traditions of the East and West. Gray’s own and her ancestor’s journeys influence and inspire her to look for these similarities. For example, the East has been very instrumental in inspiring and informing design styles that are now commonplace in the West – such as monochrome. On our most wanted list: The Nizwa cabinet, which takes inspiration from the rounded architectural castellation patterning of the Nizwa Fort in Oman. The cabinet is part of the Shamsian Collection, which is created in collaboration with Mohamed Reza Shamsian, and his team of 70 highly skilled craftsmen based in Muscat, Oman. The meticulous technique of inlaying/overlaying solid brass and paua shell inlay into coloured solid wood and maple veneer creates a highly detailed, exquisite patterning. In her own words: “For me, design itself is about finding the right balance. I like to create an atmosphere that is inclusive and comfortable, featuring symmetry, making it easy on the eye and helping balance the senses. It’s important to me though that this balance is carried through in terms of usage and practicality of the interiors, and in the design of the pieces.” On coming to Dubai: “I’ve been working closely with master craftsmen from the GCC for many years now, from founding the Ruby Tree with Islamic arts and crafts scholar M Abdul Karim Crites to working with renowned Iranian artist Mohamed Reza Shamsian in Oman. I’m really looking forward to seeing other elements of master craftsmen’s work on show that I may not have come across before.” What she’ll be discussing at INDEX: Gray will focus on similarities between the craft traditions of the East and West and how they both hold massive sway on her work during her talk, Craftsmanship in Design.

She’s known for her confident use of colour, smart use of space and luxury aesthetic. Signature style: Eclectic, elegant and tranquil. She doesn’t like an interior to be too contrived or matching. Instead, she likes things to look as though they’ve grown organically and that there’s a story behind the interior. Art is a big focus. Steven Lindsay is one of her current favourite artists. Artistic inspiration: Hamilton believes that nature is a great starting place for any home design and offers a wealth of inspiration on colour, texture and light. She’s also interested in the client’s story, so that she can draw that out and show a journey in the pieces she chooses — that might be some very modern piece that is very clean, next to an antique piece from Hong Kong because the client lived there for a period of their life, or got married or engaged there or some other significant life event.

On our most wanted list: Hamilton’s advice on colour, lighting, space and planning. In her own words: Balancing colours with soft neutral tones is important. Whatever the colour choice, pay attention to the neutral tones you choose to partner them with. We can bring more or less impact depending on how many neutrals we introduce to the scheme. Lighting is also crucial – good lighting shows the true nature of colours. Design a lighting scheme that really shows your chosen colours off. Pick out beautiful architectural features and create a bit of drama in the room. Remember to allow the space to breathe. A common mistake is to clutter the space with furniture and to think you need a piece in every single corner, but actually the space will just feel uncomfortable and claustrophobic. So remember to allow space around pieces for flow and calm. On coming to Dubai: I’m really looking forward to meeting with and talking to a wide range of people from across the world and discussing different approaches to interior design. One of the luxuries that Dubai expats will have is the quality of light. They can be softer with tones because subtle, beautiful tones will be rendered more clearly and in a way that is just not possible in the UK. What she’ll be discussing at INDEX: Hamilton will share her money-can’t-buy tips and advice.

I

f anyone knows Jumeirah Islands, Yasmin Torkamani does. Mother to two children, Ryan, 12, and Ava Rose, eight, she runs a home care service called Sublime Home Healthcare and has lived in the beautiful community of villas built around lakes in several clusters with her family, for nearly 12 years. “My husband and I have lived in Dubai for 14 years. Both our children were born here,” she says. The city was a very different place then. “At the time, Sheikh Zayed Road finished in Downtown Dubai and Dubai Marina was just about to release six Emaar towers – only three of those offered apartments to buy.”

Yasmin and her husband, Ramin Attari, looked at numerous locations for their home, though their options for buying were limited. “The only places available to buy included Arabian Ranches, The Springs, three clusters of The Meadows, a few villas in Emirates Hills and here, in Jumeirah Islands, which also wasn’t complete.” The couple were torn between Emirates Hills and Jumeirah Islands, but plumped for the latter. “This is a very child-friendly community – it’s very safe for children to play outside.” They also liked the location with its easy access to Al Khail Road and Sheikh Zayed Road. At the time, their current home wasn’t finished, but they saw another in the same style, which reassured them of their choice. Of the three different types of villas – Master View, Entertainment Foyer and Garden Halls, available in different styles, such as Arabic, Spanish, Venetian – Yasmin and her husband chose an Entertainment Foyer villa in an Arabic style. The couple made some initial interior alterations when they first moved in, during which time they ordered their entire interior, from the furniture to the tiles, from Italy, which took five months to arrive. They upgraded their villa again in 2006 and a couple of years later, in

We changed the interior greatly by knocking down walls and opening up the staircase 2008, the villa underwent a complete renovation. “We totally opened up the space,” Yasmin explains. There were originally lots of corridors in the house and walls between rooms, including between the hallway and the living room and between the living room and their dining room space. “We changed the interior greatly by knocking down walls and completely changing the staircase by opening it up.” In terms of style rules, shades of brown and beige are out. “The house interior was quite dark and dull when we bought it. The doors were brown; and the walls were beige so we changed the style to create a very bright, modern house.” Are there any other rules? “We are originally from Iran so you see Persian carpets in any Iranian house you go to, but we try to be quite modern in style even with our choice of Persian carpets.” As well as making the house light and contemporary, the renovation included adding texture with a monochrome design on the walls, painting wood beams and adding a circle motif that runs throughout the ground floor. The home is

also furnished with artworks, including large-scale paintings by Balinese artist Samara, family portraits, and sculptures by international artists. It’s a beautiful space for entertaining. “Our house is always full of guests,” Yasmin smiles. “Every weekend we have friends and family visiting, including from abroad.” There was just one difference in style direction between Yasmin and Ramin during the major renovation. “The only conflict we had was that he liked wooden flooring and I didn’t,” Yasmin concedes. “With the weather conditions in the UAE, I thought it wouldn’t be practical to have wood – it starts expanding in the heat and it then makes so much noise when you walk on it.” The interior designer and stylist found a solution: they glued the whole wooden floor to the ceramic underneath. “If you wanted to take the floor up, you would have to drill it,” Yasmin reveals. Except for her intentions to transform the study into a games room, we get the impression that Yasmin doesn’t plan to make any other major changes to her gorgeous family home for a while.

Interior designer Niloufar BakhtiarBakhtiari has transformed an archetypical Victorian London townhouse into a talking point Words: Lucy Land

IDEAS | Better Homes Magazine

“W

hen you open the door to this typical Chelsea townhouse, the first thing you see is a corridor and a staircase. So we took that as our starting point to ensure that we would make the family home look amazing,” says Niloufar Bakhtiar-Bakhtiari, head of design and founder of award-winning NBB Design. The London home that Niloufar is referring to belongs to a young French couple. After having children, they wanted to update their house to create a warm and comfortable feel. The couple enjoy entertaining so the design project was aimed at reflecting their personalities while also creating a fun, elegant and functional space. “We had worked for this couple previously so the brief was to reuse some furniture from their previous house but to create a more family-like style, while also creating a less urban atmosphere than their previous property,” Niloufar explains. Set over six floors, the Grade II-listed Victorian property located in Belgravia had previously been separated with two basement flats so Niloufar and her team reunited the building and added a window to the rear of the house to allow more light into it. “Getting permission to have the window installed proved quite a challenge with the council,” Niloufar admits. “But it was worth the effort.” So how did Niloufar give the entrance a wow factor? “As the homeowner likes to hunt, an

installation of white deer-head trophies in the corridor was created,” she enthuses. “The brightred banister also attracts the eye and acts as a focal point throughout the house.” Indeed, colour is used in a playful yet sensitive way, with paintings and fabrics influencing the home’s palette. “The clients were already enthusiastic about the colour codes,” Niloufar says. “They even dared to have the living room walls painted in setting plaster, which gives a very mellow yet elegant effect that not everyone would have gone for.” Clever use of colour was also employed in the nursery. “The couple wanted a Peter Pan-themed nursery and it had to accommodate for a growing family.” To achieve this, Niloufar created a separate play area to the sleeping area and painted the floor in order to bring softness to the room. “The inspiration for the home was to mix antique and contemporary furniture and classical and funky designs, which hide technology,” Niloufar says. This is, arguably, most apparent in the dining room, where two Asian art pieces owned by the couple became the starting point, while a classical glass chandelier was surrounded with contemporary transparent mirrors. For entertaining purposes, two tables can be joined as one, but are usually separated to make the space cosier for everyday life. Meanwhile, the kitchen was given a country-style makeover to create a charming, elegant space. Niloufar and her team created a sophisticated, stylish drawing room with an en-suite family room by using a very subtle setting-plaster background and some pearl-grey paint, while the wall surrounding the second fireplace was lined with charcoal wallpaper, surrounded by four black bookshelves. The master bedroom and en-suite, which features an antique mirror wall surrounding the fireplace, also reflected the mix of contemporary and classic styles. NBB Design added subtle touches of the French owners’ heritage by featuring their antique furniture pieces and artworks throughout the house. For example, the homeowners cherish a painting of Peter Sellers, so Niloufar placed it in the bathroom so they could enjoy it. “I always try to treat bathrooms as other rooms and to incorporate art into them,” she says. Niloufar is expert at improving small, awkward spaces. The garden room is a perfect example of her skill in transforming such a spot. “We changed it quite dramatically, using the existing wall panelling, and painted the ceiling red,” she explains. The effect is dramatic yet refined. Another surprise can be found in the guest bathroom. “We made it a priority to make it stunning,” Niloufar reveals. She achieved this by treating classical moulding in a contemporary way with neon paint, which created a striking effect. “Even the very classical toile de jouy blind is hand-painted with fluorescent colours,” Niloufar smiles. It’s a wonderful example of how Niloufar has transformed a space that’s usually considered quite ordinary into something that is quite extraordinary. nbbdesign.com
