When Faiza Haider moved to Dubai six years ago, she left behind a newly-built house in her native Karachi – and a collection of hand-made furniture. But when she started to build a new life in the UAE with her husband and three children, she quickly realised she’d have to find a good shipping company: for all the choice of furniture stores in Dubai, nothing measured up to her beloved bespoke pieces that sat unused in Pakistan. “I realised then that there was a dearth of good quality artisan furniture in the UAE,” says Faiza as we sit on one of her treasured divans. “But little did I know back then that it would turn into a business.” After shipping her furniture over, Faiza met Tasmeer Kamal, a fellow expat who was equally disappointed in the UAE’s selection

‘Interior design comes naturally to me – I imagine the pieces in the right places’ of goods. The pair discovered their shared love of interior design: four years previously, Faiza had given up a career in banking to take on consultancy design projects, and Tasmeer was exhibiting her own creations at furniture exhibitions in Dubai. An idea for a high-end artisan furniture shop was born – but it didn’t come to fruition until last year. Burgundy Design, co-founded by Faiza and Tasmeer, showcases the expertise of furniture makers from Pakistan: pieces are hand-carved from rosewood, with a variety

of different finishes and materials. “They’re like works of art, but without an untouchable price tag,” says Faiza. “Because Tasmeer and I have strong backgrounds in furniture, we are aware of the love and craftsmanship that goes into the pieces. We showcase the work of designers from Pakistan, as well as designs from our own selection. We work directly with the suppliers and the craftsmen – it’s so exciting.” Faiza’s Al Barari villa is full of the original pieces that sparked Burgundy Design:

each has its own story, and most pieces were commissioned by Faiza herself. It has been her family home for three years, and her passion for interior design is clear: everything from the original paintings above the marble fireplace to the raw silk upholstery is picture-perfect, with a traditional yet artistic style. “Interior design comes naturally to me – I can imagine the pieces in the right places. I am inclined towards classic furniture, as modern trends just don’t appeal to me.”

Al Barari’s high-spec finish helped the project to run smoothly, admits Faiza: “I loved that I had so much beautiful space to work with. Every house has its issues, but this place has been wonderful. We rent, so we didn’t want to do any structural changes – but it has a character of its own, so we were happy to leave it.” This is the smallest of the Al Barari villas, with six bedrooms. “We looked at the bigger ones,” says Faiza, “but they’re so vast you can get lost in them, and this has more than enough space for us. It’s welcoming and cosy, and there’s so much natural light.” Indeed, Faiza chose not to fit curtains in the downstairs living areas: “I don’t like to shut out the light, and the garden is so beautiful that I didn’t want to hide it. Even the wooden

The house has a character of its own’ window frames are lovely – you don’t want to cover them up.” I don’t blame Faiza: the greenery around the villa is true to Al Barari’s lush reputation, and the garden and pool are beautiful. This is a true desert oasis, and even though it’s far from central Dubai – “It takes at least 20 minutes to get anywhere,” says Faiza – I can see why it’s considered the city’s ultimate spot for families. It’s popular with guests, too: “We have lots of visitors – my in laws have just come for two months. They enjoy the surroundings, and we love to take them to The Farm. Meydan: the essentials Your need-to-know guide to what’s in and around the area

There are lots of opportunities to rent and buy in Meydan – the area is vast, allowing plenty of villa projects to take root. At the moment, the area is still in the early stages of development, but the two most significant projects are completed: Al Barari and Living Legends. Al Barari is known for its ultra-highspec villas, set in landscaped parks and gardens – it's a very affluent neighbourhood, which offers a fantastic quality of life. Living Legends, whose residences have just been finished, is also geared towards the luxury market, although the area's landscaping and amenities haven't yet been completed.

There's no denying it: you're at least a 15-minute drive from the city centre, so be prepared to put the miles in. However, you'll likely be ensconced in your own little slice of familyfriendly Dubai, and have little impulse to venture far for your fun. It's worth spending extra money on your property for a swimming pool and garden. Meydan Racecourse (meydan. ae) offers a great day out for all the family, with plenty of events held over the winter. The Meydan IMAX hosts screenings of local and international films, as well as the occasional concert. Global Village, which opens again this month, is also close by.

Meydan Hotel (meydanhotels. com) boasts eight restaurants and lounges: great for local residents that don't want to venture into the city. Pick Prime Steakhouse for American-style grills, Shiba for Asian favourites in a sophisticated setting, and Farriers for all-day dining and a fabulous Friday brunch spread. Qube Sports Bar is a lively spot, with a popular ladies' night and regular sports screenings, while Equus Bar serves up poolside snacks in laid-back surroundings. Venture to The Farm in Al Barari (thefarmdubai. com) for gourmet cuisine in beautiful landscaped settings: we love its fresh, wholesome lunch menu.

The Meydan area boasts a handful of schools with excellent reputations, but be aware that spaces are limited: register as far in advance as possible. Top picks include: Repton School (British curriculum, reptondubai.org) for pupils aged 3 to 18, with options for boarding; Safa School (British curriculum, safaschooldubai.com) for foundation level to Year 7; and International Concept for Education (French and IB curriculum, icedubai.org) which has recently opened. Plans for a local franchise of Kent College Canterbury have been announced: it is expected to open in 2015.

The US Federal Reserve is expected to start to 'taper' its asset-buying programme. It was this plan, popularly known as Quantitative Easing, that led to very low interest rates in US and UK economies. The 'tapering' programme will let the rates rise a bit. Will that affect interest rates in other parts of the world? Those that are closely linked with the global economy will feel the impact. Dubai, being a leading regional trading hub, will feel this effect too. However, the effect will not be as profound as it will be on other economies in the vicinity. The simple reason is the excess liquidity with the banks. This liquidity may rise further with the continuing growth of the GDP, which in 2013 is expected to cross 4% again. In 2009, at the height of the financial crisis, three-month Eibor was averaging 1.95%. It

has now fallen by almost half to 0.86%. The impeding tapering could encourage or edge these rates up. Home owners will have to factor this into their decisions. Thankfully there is quite a lot of choice available. The most ideal would be Eibor-linked interest rates. The products carrying Eibor-linked rates are more market-led and lenders will have little control of the rates. There is also a family of products carrying three- to fiveyear fixed rate programmes. These products will ensure continuity of rates well into the medium term, giving the security of predictable repayment levels on a monthly basis. Of course, one has to be mindful of early repayment penalties beyond the fixed-rate period. Most products will have none or very low penalties. However, it is also advisable to keep open the option of re-mortgaging or

re-financing the properties after the fixed-rate period. There is some choice available in that context as well. Mortgage products with low or no re-mortgage penalties will become popular over time. As more home-owners get used to having mortgages on their properties they will look for opportunities to stay on the lowest-rate mortgages for as long as possible. Most mortgage products will have lower rates for the initial period, and then switch to higher rates. With the number of lenders and mortgage products increasing we will witness a consistent flow of low-rate offers coming on and off the market all the time. Home owners with mortgages that have no re-mortgage penalties will benefit from these products and thus manage to keep their repayments low. independentuae.com

Sweet surrender Organic eatery Baker & Spice boasts some of the finest cakes in town. Pastry chef Mariangela Pratt shares her recipes for her favourite tea-time treats…

We’re always on the lookout for a great afternoon tea, so when we heard about Chef Mariangela Pratt’s organic cakes at Baker & Spice, we had to give them a try. Part of the ever-changing array of sweet treats on offer at our favourite neighbourhood eatery, the cakes are everything you’d expect: light, comforting, and wicked... Although they’re not as wicked as you might expect – every ingredient is organic, and chosen for its quality and flavour. You won’t find any unnecessary calories here, even in the richer

desserts (we’re looking at you, Chocolate Fudge Cake), as Chef Mariangela explains: “Our fudge cake is gluten- free, and with its high cocoa content it’s a rich source of epicatechin and gallic acid, which are thought to possess cardioprotective properties. The fruity varieties are full of vitamins – the blueberry cake, for example, is high in antioxidants, low in saturated fat, cholesterol and sodium. Believe it or not, our cakes are a good source of dietary fibre, vitamins C and K and manganese.” Better yet, Chef Mariangela has shared her favourite healthy recipes – so you won’t feel too guilty going for a second slice... bakerandspiceme.com

LEMON DRIZZLE CAKE Makes 3 small (440g) cakes Cake t 5 eggs t 350g sugar t 350g Irish cream flour t 1tsp baking powder t 180ml double cream t Zest of 2 lemons t 50ml fresh lemon juice t 125g butter, melted Icing t Lemon juice t Icing sugar

1. Grease three small loaf tins and line with silicon paper. Sift together the flour and baking powder. 2. Lightly beat the eggs

and sugar, whisking until just combined (not thick and aerated). Beat the cream into the eggs for a minute, then the zest and the lemon juice. 3. Fold the flour into the egg mixture until combined, then carefully fold in the melted butter. Divide the batter between tins, and bake for 25-30 minutes at 155°C until a skewer comes out clean when inserted into the centre. 4. For the icing, sift the icing sugar into a bowl. Slowly add 2/3 of the lemon juice, whisking until combined. Add more lemon juice to make a thinner icing. The icing will thin even more when left for 2-3 minutes. Brush over the top of each cake, and serve.

GLUTEN-FREE CHOCOLATE FUDGE CAKE Makes 1 (24cm) cake t t t t t t

180g pasturised egg yolks 245g pasturised egg whites 240g butter 240g 70% dark chocolate 85g cocoa powder 260g sugar

1. Melt the butter and chocolate in a saucepan in a bain marie. Remove from the heat and add the cocoa. Allow to cool. 2. Whisk the egg yolks with 160g sugar until light and fluffy. Pour the chocolate mix into the egg mix and fold together. Set aside. 3. Beat the egg whites with 100g sugar until stiff but not dry. Fold into the chocolate mix. 4. Remove 450g of the batter and keep refrigerated. Pour the rest into a lined cake tin. Bake at 155째C, for 30 minutes until a skewer comes out almost dry. 5. When the cake is cool, spread the remaining chocolate mix on top and bake for another 10 minutes: the cake should still be moist. When cool, dust with cocoa powder and icing sugar. October 2013

250g butter 250g sugar 4 eggs 250g cream flour 1tsp baking powder Half tsp bicarbonate of soda

t 1tsp cinnamon t 100g sour cream t 1 punnet blueberries

1. Sift together the flour, baking powder, soda and cinnamon. Roll the berries in a little flour. 2. Cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy, and add the eggs gradually.

3. Fold in the dry ingredients and sour cream one at a time, then fold in the berries. 4. Divide the mixture into buttered and papered tins, and bake at 155째C for 30 mins.
