Tanja Peters – owner and founder of cool kiddies’ brand Coochy Coo – invites us in to her family home with sons Milo and Kenu Images by Nasir Rauf, nasirrauf.com Tanja, tell us what brought you to Umm Suqeim Well, my husband and I have actually been in Dubai since 2005 and were moved directly to this area by the companies we worked for. I did look at other areas, like Arabian Ranches and The Meadows, but I really liked this area as it’s so close to the beach and I love surfing. It’s also close to the marina and to all of the hotels, as well as Jumeirah. What drew you to this property? We have been in this villa for two years now. It has a very European feel, which I loved, but I also like the neighbourhood – it’s very mixed with expats from all over February 2012
the world as well as local Emiratis, which is nice as, really, that’s why we came here; for that cultural experience. How do you find the neighbourhood? Well, I must admit that what I don’t like is that there’s not so much of a community spirit here like you may have at The Meadows or The Springs as the properties are more closed off here. That said, we did have a street festival here recently where all of the neighbours got together for food and drinks – we had a barbecue on a grassy area out the front and put some bunting up – it was lovely! So, I would say you can definitely make it more homely and get to know your neighbours as much
as you want to. For example, at Christmas, a neighbour gave me the most beautiful Christmas cake – I didn’t even know her before and now we’re like best friends. Did you decide to rent or buy here? We rent as you can’t actually buy property here – it’s not a free zone, it’s purely owned by local Emiratis. Did it put me off? No. My husband and I are from Germany and I think Germans in general are not so into the idea of buying as other nationalities; we’re actually a bit adverse to buying at a young age, so it didn’t bother us. Do you have amenities within reach? We do. In the beginning, there was only a

Choithrams supermarket, then there is a Spinneys a bit further down Al Wasl road. Now, though, we have an Aswaaq shopping centre, which is five-minutes away and has a nice assortment of little shops and a petrol station. The best shop, though, is the surf shop down the road – I love that place. Where do you spend your leisure time? Well it’s so easy to go to the beach – it’s just down the road. Then there are the bars and the spas – we literally live in the hotels around here! That’s really how Dubai is, those hotels are like our village. There’s a really nice German restaurant, Der Keller, in the Jumeirah Beach Hotel which we go to. We don’t eat German food all the time, of course, but once in a while you really crave some sausage or some sauerkraut and so it’s great to go there. The boys can take their bikes and scooters too – it’s just over the road. At weekends, then, we often go to the Jumeirah Beach Hotel and to the beach. Mina Al Salaam is close by too, so I think it’s actually a really easy life here. Are there any other local hotspots you’d recommend to newcomers? We love a restaurant called La Verandah, which is a pizzeria at Jumeirah Beach Hotel. On Fridays we love the Beachcombers there too; they do a really beautiful brunch/lunch and it’s just opposite the Burj Al Arab and beach. It’s nice with or without kids but I find it relaxing with the boys as they can just play on beach while you have a quiet meal. There are some really cute places if you go down to the harbour, too. There’s an Indian restaurant, for example, called Chalet. Not everyone would eat there but it does great curries and is really cheap. Another quite famous restaurant opposite Umm Suqeim harbour is one that was opened by a fisherman and it’s just a little shack with seats out front – if you ever want to escape the five-star world than this is quite cool. What about the local schools is there much choice for parents? We were really lucky, actually, as we lived on the other side of Umm Suqeim when our first son Milo was born and the Kings School was just opposite us. So, I inscribed him without even looking to see which schools were the best. Now it’s one of

‘I love Flamant and I like bits and pieces from BoConcept’ Dubai’s best schools and has achieved outstanding ratings for consecutive years since. When other parents couldn’t get their children in there they all asked how I did it! It really was just because I had put his name down so early - as soon as he was born. You have pieces from all over the world in your villa – what’s the story behind them? My first job was in Bangkok and there I picked up all of the Asian items you can see on the shelves in our lounge. The tray is from Malaysia; the elephant bell from trekking in the north; the statues from a market in Bangkok; the gong from a long trek in Laos and – my latest addition – a turquoise jar from an Omani market. I also have these two great white rocking chairs from Cuba. There’s a tradition there for everyone who loves, or is in love, to put a pair on the porch. So, since my husband and I were, and still are, in love we thought it would be nice to bring a pair over. Where do you shop for interior items here in Dubai? I love Flamant – I think it’s a beautiful

shop – and I like the bits and pieces from BoConcept, they have some nice design pieces. We also make a lot of things ourselves – we’ll buy wood and turn it into something, or we’ll paint things. Now I hear there’s a new shop in Al Quoz called the Antique Café, so I think that’s where I’ll have to go next.
in white parquet flooring I wanted to create some warmth in the home. I also brought in a mix of antiques and lots of pictures of my family. I think a house is to live with and should be full of memories. In the same way I think a home can tell a lot about you and your life – and photos really help that.
Did you have a theme in mind when decorating the villa? We didn’t try to create any one style, it’s just eclectic. I really like white as you can put it with anything and it works. We brought in antiques and one wall of printed wallpaper so that it wasn’t all white. Upstairs we put
Finally, what is your most-loved aspect of your Umm Suqeim home? Our bedroom – it has a great view out to the Burj Al Arab. Even though, as parents and a working mum, we don’t get much sleep nowadays, it looks beautiful morning or night all lit up.

Love Thy Neighbourhood
Umm Suqeim 3 We bring you essential know-how on daily life in and around this villa-rich area.. Property Similar to Jumeirah, the upmarket residential zone of Umm Suqeim comes divided in to three sub-communities, known as Umm Suqeim 1, Umm Suqeim 2 and Umm Suqeim 3. Navigate the suburban area off the Jumeirah coastline and you’ll be met with groomed streets of individual, spacious villas and, to their rear, spacious gardens and private swimming pools. When it comes to residents, expect a mixed bag, from British to Emirati. Expatriates cannot buy property here, however, with generous villas that are ideal for family living, it doesn’t put off the many lessees who reside here long-term. Rental prices vary here, too, and it’s not unusual to snap up an older five-bed villa for the price of a three-bed, if you’re prepared to give it a little TLC...
Shopping and a bite There’s a plethora of shopping spots in the area where you can pick up those all-important groceries and household goods. For starters, Aswaaq (aswaaq.
ae). Open from 10am to 10pm, here you’ll find everything from a French bakery to a pharmacy and laundry shop. Umm Suqeim is also home to a Choithrams, Spinney’s and Lulu’s Hypermarket. If you want to step out for a grander shopping trip or bite, meanwhile, try the famous Souk Madinat Jumeirah (jumeirah.com), a virtual treasure trove of jewellery stores and interior boutiques, along with eateries in abundance - stop off for a coffee at Starbucks, lunch by the water as abras glide by at The Noodle House or eat an all-out Italian meal at Toscana - to literally name a few. For a colossal clothes shopping trip, meanwhile, The Mall of the Emirates and Ibn Battuta Mall can be reached in 10-minutes, while The Dubai Mall is approximately 15 minutes away.
Leisure time Whichever sub-community you plump for, you’ll find yourself just minutes from the pristine Jumeirah Beach coast where the more active among you can take to the sea, be it to swim or surf, while others can simply lay back, soak up the sun and
admire the famous sail-shaped Burj Al Arab. In Umm Suqeim 3, meanwhile, you’ll find the Jumeirah Beach Hotel (jumeirah.com), home to myriad eateries and hangouts (Beachcombers’ setting by the sea can’t fail to make you feel like you’re on holiday) and where you can sign up to the Pavillion Dive Center for scuba lessons, while kids can get involved in all manner of activities, from face painting to sports at Sinbad’s Kids Club. (you’ll have to pay for entrance). Also in Umm Suqeim 3 is Wild Wadi Water Park whose flumes and shoots are an absolute hoot, whatever your age.
Schooling With so many families setting up home here, it’s little wonder that schools are plentiful. Raffles International School (rafflesis.com), Kings’ Dubai (kingsdubai. com) and the Emirates International School (eischools.ae) all gain plaudits from parents. While, for tiny tots, nurseries of note include Raffles Nursery, Kids’ Palace (kidspalacenursery.com) and The Blossom Nursery Dubai (theblossomnursery.com).

Finding a home that’s child-friendly is easier said than done – which is why we asked baby-proofing pros DuMa Safe (dumasafe. com) to share their dos and don’ts for house-hunting parents
DO look at flooring... Non-slip prone tiles and marbles are the most child-friendly option or, better yet, you could consider installing carpets or soft floorings, which will further prevent any accidents commonly caused by slippery floors. DON’T leave stairs unguarded... If having stairs in your home is something that is difficult for you to avoid, then you should make plans to install safety gates and prevent your little one from accessing the stairs unsupervised. Don’t wait for any unfortunate event to happen before you consider installing one – especially if you have toddlers. DO watch out for gaps... Some staircases, for example, have open back spaces – somewhere that a child may be able to squeeze through and either fall down or get trapped. Be sure that the gaps between upright posts on stair rails are less than five inches, to avoid the chance of your child’s head getting caught between them. If it cannot be avoided, why not consider installing banister shields? Just put it to your landlord or property consultant. February 2012

It’s something we often dismiss, but it’s worth ensuring that all of the locks throughout the property each work effectively. That way you can prevent any accidental lock-ins or finger pinching. DO take smoke detectors seriously... While most tower blocks will have these installed, do enquire as to whether
an independent villa has the same securities in place. Smoke detectors and fire hydrants are also important safety precautions. Be sure to run a test to ensure that it’s actually working, too. DON’T ignore sharp edges... It’s always an adjustment, trading a single home for a family one. However, a property with lots of harsh edges and corners may work very well for bachelors but may not prove to be the most child-friendly choice for growing families, so do think practically about what may suit your new situation. DO check all the windows... Many homes here in Dubai are not at ground level, so extra caution needs to be taken with windows – especially if you live in a high-rise tower. Ensure that each window has a proper lock and one that cannot be easily accessed by little fingers. Locks with keys are most recommended and the lock should be fitted high up enough that children can’t reach it. Windows that can only open up to a certain inch – small enough for the child’s head not to fit in – are fine but add a lock too.

How Do I… Transport my pet overseas? Six ways to get your pet plane-ready

FIGHTING FIT Visit your vet to have your furry friend fullyvaccinated in time for your trip – rabies are an absolute must, as is a micro-chip so that he or she can be properly identified. All jabs should be valid at the time of flying so even if you think your pet is up to date, check he or she doesn’t need a booster before the off.

POOCH PASSPORT Just like you, your feline or canine friend will need their very own passport; once he or she has had all their vaccinations, they’ll be valid for one and your vet can advise you how to get one in his little paws in no time.

LEGAL MATTERS Laws will vary depending on the country you’re transporting your pet to or from. The good news for animal-loving Brits is that that pet transportation laws changed on January 1 2012, which means, like the rest of Europe, you can enter the UK without quarantine, so long as your pet meets the scheme’s rules.

CARRY-ON CAGE Your pet must travel in an ‘airlineapproved’ hardshell cage – head to all good vets or pet shops in Dubai and request this model specifically. Back at home, place the cage in a living space so he or she can familiarise themselves with it ahead of their journey. Pop a familiar scented item in when they fly and it’s likely to ease the transition.

COMBAT SICKNESS Remember that animals can get air-sick too. Give him or her a small feed and water ahead of the flight and ensure they take a toilet trip, too. Resist giving your pet a sedative or tranquiliser as this will reduce their reflexes and could cause injury on the trip.

DO RESEARCH THE COST. Transportation isn’t cheap and will depend on your animal’s weight and size. You can expect to pay the cost of a human flight (possibly first class), but it will be worth it to have your beloved pet in your new home.

Get the details ready before you come to us – as well as up-to-date vaccinations, micro chip and passport, we’ll need your pet’s name, the origin city and airport; destination city and airport, planned date of travel, pet breed, birth date and weight and size of your airline-approved travel cage. We’ll also need a photocopy of your own passport and residency visa page. Then on to paperwork; we can assist in preparing everything you need, like import and export documentation. You will need to formally consign your animal to Move One, so that we are able to act on your behalf. Next it’s the airport check-in; we’ll get your pet there at the designated time and ensure that all of the relevant documents are registered, including confirming flight departure details. You’ll know what’s going on at every step, as we’ll keep you abreast from the time of check in, to transit arrival, to transit departure, and arrival at final destination. In essence, your animal is our responsibility from the time we pick it up for export, or from the time we receive it at the destination. In total, the process takes around seven days and this varies from country to country, depending on the import/export requirements of local officials. This period accounts for all of the pre-preparation as well as the airport and customs formalities. The cost will vary based on the size of the animal and his or her overall weight. Move One can include a cage in its service, at an extra cost. Don’t worry… the process is a safe one. Your pet will be transported in his or her designated cage as cargo in the cargo hold. The airlines are very aware of travelling pets and keep a special eye on their welfare.

Caulifower Truffle Veloute Soup
CAULIFLOWER TRUFFLE VELOUTE SOUP Serves 2 1 head of cauliflower, cut into pieces ½ white onion, roughly chopped 1 celery stalk, roughly chopped 1 garlic clove, chopped 1 bay leaf 1 sprigs of thyme 2 sprigs of parsley 2 cups of chicken or vegetable stock ¼ cup heavy cream (optional) 1.5 tblsp truffle oil Salt or white pepper to taste 1.5 tblsp flour 1.5 tblsp butter 1.5 tblsp olive oil

1. In a large pot, add the olive oil and butter, onion, celery and cauliflower and sauté for 3 to 4 minutes. Season with salt and pepper, add garlic and continue to stir. 2. Add the flour and stir until it is ‘cooked out’, then add the stock, thyme and parsley. 3. Bring the soup up to a simmer and cook for 30 minutes before seasoning to taste. 4. When all ingredients are cooked, pour into a blender and puree until smooth. 5. Strain the soup with a fine sieve. 6. Pour the now-smooth soup back in to the pot, add the cream and season. 7. Finally, add the truffle oil, being careful not to add too much or the soup’s flavour will be overpowered.

Lamb Loin Piperade
LAMB LOIN PIPERADE One portion 160g lamb loin 100g capsicum 100g zucchini 100g eggplant 200g green peas 1 onion 10ml olive oil 55g frozen peas 5ml cream 2g butter, unsalted Salt and pepper, to taste 150ml chicken stock 10ml heavy cream 2g minced garlic 1 rosemary sprig

1. For the pea puree, cook the green peas in boiling salted water for 3-4 minutes. Strain and place in a blender until pureed. Add the cream, butter and season with salt and pepper and set aside. 2. For the piperade, cut all of the vegetable in to small cubes (‘brunoise’).
3. Add some oil to a pan and, when heated, add the onion until it’s transparent, then add the capsicum, zucchini and eggplant (be sure to keep the vegetables crunchy) before seasoning. Set aside. 4. Season the lamb with salt and pepper. 5. Heat a sautéed pan for 90 seconds and, when the pan is hot, place the lamb and sear it all around. 6. When the meat is browned, remove it from the pan and on to a baking sheet. For a medium result, cook it in the oven for 10-13 minutes at 375 degrees F. For medium-towell, cook for a further 7-8 minutes. 7. To make the sauce, place the sautéed pan on to the stove top and use a spoon to scrape the brown bits from the pan before adding the stock, garlic, rosemary. 8. Reduce the mix by half, season, add the cream and reduce for another five minutes. When the sauce is to your liking, strain it with a fine sieve. Set aside. 9. When the lamb is cooked, rest it for two minutes (cover with aluminum foil to keep it warm) and serve.

TRIO CRÈME BRULEE 3 ramekins (small, ceramic or glass bowl for crème brulees) 1 ¼ cups heavy cream ½ cup full cream milk 5 large egg yolks 1/3 cup sugar 2 tsp pure vanilla extract 2 tbsp ground pistachio nuts 2 tbsp melted chocolate

1. Preheat the oven to 95ºC and line up your three ramekins on a baking tray. 2. In a mixing bowl, whisk the egg yolks, sugar, and vanilla extract until it’s combined, but not airy. 3. Bring the cream and milk to a gentle boil. Still whisking, pour in about one quarter of the hot milk – this will temper or warm the yolks so they won’t curdle. 4. Whisking all the while, slowly pour in the remainder of the cream and milk. 5. Stir and ensure that all of the sugar is melted and then strain the mix in to the ramekins. 6. Tap the ramekins on the counter to let all of the bubbles out and scoop out the froth on top with a spoon. 7. Add chocolate to one, add pistachio to another and stir to combine. 8. Put the trio in the oven and bake for 50 to 60 minutes. 9. Tap the side of the ramekins and see whether the centres are set – if it wobbles too much it needs to cook a little longer. If it is firm, then you have overcooked them. If it wobbles a little, they are ready. 10. Once they reach room temperature, cover each with plastic wrap and put in the refrigerator for at least three hours – the longer the better. Caramelised sugar topping 1. Add 1 tbsp of castor sugar to the top of each of the custards and make sure it is spread evenly on top, for an even caramelisation. 2. Set your oven to broil and position a rack just under the broiler. 3. Place the custards onto a baking sheet and put in the oven for two minutes or just until they start to caramelise. Serve immediately.
