The writing’s on the wall With Ramadan closing the month, we’re on the lookout for some Arabian delights. The number of emerging artists captivating Islamic culture has caught our attention, in particular the bright and beautiful calligraphic canvases at Naqsh Gallery, and Laurence Torno’s equestrian mosaics (pictured). In her latest collection, exclusive to the UAE, the French artist is inspired by her admiration for Arabic culture and women, and the desert landscapes that surround us. One to watch See who’s catching our eye in Dubai This award-winning bed is in dreamy shape

Friendly and natural were the winning qualities of this unassuming Auping Essential bed, one of six winners from Index’s prestigious Product Design Awards last month.

The judges looked for innovation and excellence, and found them within the bed’s smart engineering, generating a contemporary, organic – almost iconic – form. It’s slender lines and the slightly curved headboard and legs create a calming and cocooned shape, representing the very essence of sleeping.

There were 20 shortlisted designs at Dubai’s annual Index & Workspace exhibition, from climate-controlling water walls to luxury parquet.

The Dutch company (retailed in the UAE via Prime Selected Prod.) had two beds in the running, with the judges choosing the humbler Essential as their favourite.

The other winners include a delicate outdoor dining collection by landscape architect Robert Chipman, distinct chrome dining chairs by Modello, and – for the office sector – sleek wood veneer management desks from Guialmi Design Team, curved conference tables from Milwaukee Art Museum and the forward-thinking ‘cooling fountain’ Monotop Climate Wall.

What makes a design iconic? It’s not always innovative functionality – Philippe Starck’s sculptural lemon squeezer for Alessi also needs a generic tumbler to catch the juice, then a sieve to pluck out the pips. An AED10 plastic juicer with a built-in tray is actually far more functional.

It’s revered more for its strong aesthetic, clean lines and ornamental prowess (and the Starck name, of course) than its ability to help bake a lemon tart.

Where better to discover modern (and functional) icons than Scandinavia, home to the most enduring design movement in modern times, both mass-produced and original design, and more talented artisans and designers than we can keep up with.

Verner Panton may be on the tip of every WRQJXH ZKHQ GLVFXVVLQJ LQĂ XHQWLDO 'DQLVK lamp designers of the 20th century, but Henrik Pederson (born 1967) is a leading designer in the 21st.

Pederson’s talents are multifaceted, and the one-time fashion graduate can turn his hand to graphics, packaging and product. “I think that once you have been educated in design of any form, it’s quite easy to make the change,â€? says the founder of 365°, a design company based in Ă…rhus. “The creative mindset is the same, you just have to change your mental toolbox.â€? ,QWHUQDWLRQDO DĂ€FLRQDGRV PLJKW UHFRJQL]H KLV work at BoConcept, where he’s been a resident designer since 2007. It’s visually strong, enticing yet comfortable.

One glance and you’ll see that the contours are rooted in the 1950s, when Charles and Ray Eames launched what is arguably the most iconic chair in the world, the Eames Lounger and Ottoman, in 1956. “If there is one rule for my design, it is that is has to speak to you,� he says. “Form and function are my main tools to move and touch people no matter what I design. “With the Imola chair, for example, the organic expression almost talks to the unconscious urge to sit down and rest. The distinctiveness lies within the visual tension that’s created between the spoon-shaped seat and the sharp cut on the edges.�

A STORY WORTH TELLING Nada Al Ghazali surrounds herself with items that tell a tale

What’s a home without memories?

Merely a house. From family portraits to precious heirlooms and Iraqi paintings, the walls of Nada Al Ghazali’s family villa in The Meadows tell a sentimental story.

Iraq-born Nada and her IraqiCanadian husband Imad have lived in Dubai for over 30 years – a landmark by anyone’s standards – and moved to their four-bedroom villa 12 years ago.

Their three children have all flown the nest – her 23-year-old daughter studies in London and her sons, both in their thirties, live in Toronto and California. So, it’s just the two of them.

But you couldn’t guess from looking around their cosy photograph-filled home.

As I compliment her soft colour palette and Middle-Eastern accessories, she’s quick to correct me. “The furniture may be Western but all the

paintings and ornaments are from Iraq, from galleries or passed down from my late mother,” says the entrepreneur, founder of Zahr Art. “I feel a strong connection to Iraq, probably because I left the country so young and never went back. When I see something from an Iraqi artist I feel it is different, because it’s close to my heart and it’s a strong part of my heritage.”

Against the neutral colour palette of the large open-plan lounge, her paintings stand out as focal points in the room. She has colourful, abstract work by Yasin Al Mohamadawi and Amir Al Obaidi. But the signature of her favourite, an ethereal wash of turquoise, is unknown – the memory of it lost some years ago when she bought it from a gallery of Iraqi artists.

“I love this painting in the living room because it is full of hope, with

the sun shining and the people below reaching up to it,” she says. “It’s lovely at night when the light plays on it.”

Antiques are another passion for the mum-of-three. The traditional tea urn in the dining room, which is popular in Iraq and Russia, is very old and originates from her homeland. Old, reclaimed wooden doors act as objet d’art in the hallway. Engraved silver heirlooms passed on from her late mother decorate cabinets and shelves.

“I like to collect things which are artistic and antique,” she says. “My mother’s silverware is more than 60 years old and I love them. Her silver bowl is very old and my favourite item in the house. The engravings are artistic, made by hand, and tell a story.”

People are starting to realize that it’s good to support emerging designers

fashion and homeware from designers who have a purpose to their work that goes beyond a pretty aesthetic.

Her business is dedicated to her late mother, Zahra, she reveals. The affection and respect she still feels for her is palpable from the stories she tells, the black-and-white photographs and the very concept of her boutique – giving back to the community.

“I wanted to do something special and dedicate something to her because she was a very special person,” explains her daughter. “She was always involved in the community and did so many good things, and taught us how to care about people. “‘Zahra’ also means ‘flower’,” she adds. “It symbolises purity and beauty, which is what Zahra Art stands for.”

Having celebrated her company’s

first birthday in March, she’s managed to avoid the fate of many online startups and is forging an international reputation. As well as building a steady stream of online traffic from the UAE, customers click on her site from as far away as Australia, England and France.

“Online shopping is going from strength to strength,” she comments.

“E-boutiques are a niche market in Dubai, but not for long. Last year I could see a gap in the market, but the gap will close as Dubai catches up with the rest of the world.”

What’s her secret to success? Nada has a very specific stock selection process, and it’s not all about pretty jewels and designer names.

“A lot of research goes into the designers I pick,” she says. “I have to like the products myself and the idea behind their work. All the brands support a charitable cause, share the profit with a non-government organisation or support their culture and heritage. This is very important because everything has become so globalised and mass-produced and doesn’t have any history or meaning to it anymore.

“We have so many shops here that show off expensive tastes but people are starting to realise that it is good to support emerging designers and bespoke pieces.”

The We.raq cushions that litter her sofas and chairs in the living room sold out immediately, after going on sale online. The company donates 15% to orphans in Iraq and wants to support a community that works together – hence ‘We’ instead of ‘I’.

Her dining furniture and the living room sofas, television console and nest of tables are all from Marina Home.

However, she says the best decision the couple made was buying this villa in The Meadows. They bought in 2002, as soon as purchasing residential property became legal. And while The Meadows was in the sandy sticks back then, it’s since flourished into a popular community near to ‘New Dubai’.

“We’re very happy in The Meadows,” she says, looking around her traditional kitchen, with wooden units and black marble counters. “We looked at the

After more than ten years the area has changed a lot but we still love it.

“In the beginning we were in the middle of nowhere,” she laughs. “Now The Meadows is so central and close to everything. I still tease my daughter and say, “remember when we moved here and you made such a fuss?” – it was so far from her school in Garhoud and she refused to move, so we had to drive her across the city every day.

But she loves it now, too. There’s a community mall, supermarkets, nail and hair salons – everything you need.

“My husband and I walk around the lakes every day and this is something we really enjoy doing.”

Arturo Manso, managing director at Teka UAE and Teka Middle East, looks at hightech ovens, hobs and fridges: Energy expenditure in any appliance is something that’s unavoidable, so the key is not in reducing energy but within efficiency – where you can do what you need to do while expending the minimum amount of energy in the process.

There is one label, attached to the majority of kitchen and home electrical appliances, called Energy Label. The higher the rating (A+++ is the maximum) the more efficient and responsible the appliance – and your choice – is. This is a very good starting point when you’re looking at energyefficient kitchen appliances.

If you are looking to buy an oven, you should ask a few questions: how many cooking functions does it have, does it need preheating, how much energy will you spend in cleaning this

All these points not only make your life easier, but will also allow the oven to work for the exact amount of time required, and heat only to the necessary and desired point.

For hobs, there are some important facts about time, safety and energy consumption that you may not know.

For example, you spend 12 minutes standing in front of a gas hob waiting for a litre of water to boil, nine minutes by a ceramic hob, but less than eight minutes for an induction hob. Induction technology not only saves you time, but it is cleaner, safer and you are not

wasting energy – it is the most efficient and energy-saving technology there is.

Last but not least, let’s look at refrigerators. These cool-line appliances are connected and working 24/7 throughout its lifespan. You don’t disconnect your fridge during the night, or when you go on holiday, so it is always switched on and working.

Unfortunately, this means the energy consumption is permanent. If you have an energy-efficient model, the energy saved during the year will be very substantial.

High-tech appliances make a huge difference. The higher the quality of technology – the more advanced it is, with the latest features – then the more precise and efficient your appliances will be in their daily use.

Nigel Rush, brand manager at Lakeland, says a good juicer, blender and plenty of research will help: The obvious answer to a healthier diet is to buy a good juicer. Juicers are becoming more popular in the Middle East as time passes and a sweettoothed diabetic crisis looms large.

They are an excellent and quick way to make a positive and immediate impact on your diet. If you are juicing I would start with sweet fruit that you like and then experiment later by adding more ingredients (such as wheat germ, oats, cucumber et cetera) as you become more adventurous.

If you don’t have a lot of time, check how easy the appliance is to clean before you purchase it. You don’t want to buy something that is quick to use but then spend a long time cleaning it afterwards.

Food processors and blenders are also a great way to improve your diet and cut the time you spend in the kitchen.

They blitz the time-consuming tasks that lead to arm ache, and you’ll know exactly what ingredients are going into

The thing to remember with blenders and food processors is to buy something with a good motor. Motors can start at around 300Watts and go up to 1200Watts – the more powerful the motor, the quicker your tasks will be.

Less stress is also a superb way of having a healthier life, so take the time to research appliances and brand names on the internet so you know exactly what you want to buy. When you’re in the store, ask the staff plenty of questions and play with what you are going to buy before you open your wallet. Is it what you expect? Is it easy to use? Does it fit together well?

The best advice for a stress-free experience is to ask about the store’s after-sales services. If you are spending good money on something, you don’t

want to find yourself arguing with a store’s ‘no’ robot for hours, if something goes wrong after the usual 28-day exchange period.

Last month’s exciting Index exhibition brought designers, galleries, artists, innovators and keynote speakers from all over the world together, from Algeria to Vietnam. The vibrant colours, mountain teeth and abstract animals – some real and some imaginary – are youthful and energetic, despite the rich Quechan traditions rooted in the colourful patterns. These patterns honour Pachamama, Mother Earth, who the Andean people live in harmony with. The turquoise and blue evil eye charm is widely used, hung on doors or around the house to protect the home and produce a calming effect.

Black can be used as a fourth colour â&#x20AC;&#x201C; this is my preference as an interior designer rather than a cultural reference. In Turkey black is negative in two contexts: one, as a colour of death and mourning, and two, as a colour of authority.

In interior design, black helps to bring the other colours to the fore.

Lace and crochet is a very important part of Turkish design and 99% of women will know how to make lace and crochet. Such material is used on dining tables and occasional tables, television stands, towel corners and bed sheets.

The country is synonymous with high-end luxury, quality materials and fine-tuned manufacturing.

It is the pumping trendsetting pulse at the heart of design â&#x20AC;&#x201C; both on the home and on the catwalk. Not only is Italy the birthplace of the most illustrious design industry, fashion, but some of the greatest furniture designers hail from the country, too.

My Allure armchair is very thin and very modern, but it is also very comfortable, because of the combination of beauty and incredible attention to detail. There’s one hot topic of conversation at the moment: Ramadan. Recognising the most important date in the Islamic calendar for moral discipline, family and tradition, the city is gradually winding down for the Holy Month, expected to commence from June 29 (depending on the lunar cycle).

Whether you’re a new expatriate wondering how an evening Iftar unfolds, or a Muslim studiously preparing for a month of fasting, the dining table has never been so widely discussed.

Ramadan is also a time for generosity. Homes become a glorious hosting environment for night-time feasts, where family and friends can share the special moments of the weeks ahead, gathered around the kitchen and dining table.

“Iftar in the UAE has many influences due to the vast cultures of residents in the region,” comments Joseph Haidar, general manager at

Lao invites you to join the family with authentic Southeast Asian dishes

There are a few notable Asian restaurants jostling for best newcomer, and Waldorf Astoria’s Lao is a serious contender.

“Asian food is very popular around the world and, with the number of Dubai expatriates, fine Asian cuisine is always in demand here,” says Lao’s chef de cuisine Phuong Mai Nguyen.

“We are seeing restaurants striving to provide more authentic and regional tastes, swaying away from the popular ‘Westernisation’ of Asian food, which has become a staple cuisine in Dubai’s culture, and a huge part of the Emirate’s restaurant life.”

Southeast Asian cuisine is her restaurant’s specialty, concentrating on the rich culinary traditions of the Lao people, heavily influenced by northeastern Thailand, Vietnam, and Cambodia.

A staple food of the Lao people is steamed sticky rice, and they’re known to call themselves ‘Luk Khao Niaow’, which means ‘Children of Sticky Rice’.

I eagerly adopted myself into the family fold after tasting the steamed lobster rice roll and steamed rice crepe roll appetisers during evening dinner at the restaurant on Palm Jumeirah.

But there’s much more than sticky rice on offer.

My waiter did not just recommend the baked shangainese pastry, but insisted upon it. These parcels of foie gras and spring onion turned out to be one of the best dishes of the evening.

It’s not often you go to a restaurant and would be happy with just the appetiser menu, but I could have tried each and every dim sum dish – given a larger stomach.

Chef Mai has spent years understanding the unique flavours and fusions of Southeast Asian cuisine and admits that Vietnamese cuisine is her favourite.

“I prefer it because it contains a lot of spices and it is also light and healthy. Vietnamese food will never get you fat, it is always fresh and full of natural ingredients. Personally, Vietnamese fried spring rolls are my favourite dish, especially when it is filled with fresh vegetables and prawns.”

Fresh vegetables are key when you’re cooking authentic Asian cuisine at home, she says, as well as lemon rind, garlic and ginger.

I asked her what the secret was to my favourite Lao dish, the baked shangainese pastry. “It’s all about rich flavour,” she explains. “The key is the way the foie gras is cooked. It has to be grilled medium, added to the pastry and then left in the oven for five minutes.

“To cook the best grilled lemongrass beef, the lemongrass plant needs to be picked carefully. It is the core of this dish and it will always add the best flavour and taste to a fine piece of beef.” waldorfastoria3.hilton.com June 2014

2kg prime beef tenderloin 250g lemongrass 150ml soy sauce (Kikkoman) 30g black peppercorns 20g sugar 250g vermicelli noodles 150ml dark soy sauce 100g peanuts 200g gem lettuce 20g red capsicum Salt 250g charcoal Wooden skewers Grill box or barbecue

Soak the wooden skewers in water over night, or for at least one hour â&#x20AC;&#x201C; this prevents them burning on the grill.

Cut the beef into cubes and marinate with lemongrass juice, soy, crushed peppercorns, salt and sugar. Skewer the beef cubes and place on the grill box or barbecue at a medium temperature.

Put the vermicelli noodles in hot water for five minutes, then remove and season with salt. Top with crushed peanuts.

Baked Shanghainese Pastry Serves 10

400g all-purpose flour 75ml water 400g unsalted butter 15g salt 30g foie gras 80g spring onion 1 egg yolk 20g banana leaves 20g black peppercorns 50ml cooking oil Method: Knead the flour, diced butter, most of the salt and water together into a dough and set aside in the freezer for 30 minutes.

Grill the foie gras with the remaining salt and crushed peppercorns. Make sure the foie gras is the same consistency as the pastry dough.

Slice the spring onion and sautĂŠ, while seasoning with salt and pepper.

Meanwhile, take out the dough from the freezer, roll out until thin and cut a section measuring seven inches wide and two-feet long. Place the grilled foie gras and spring onions onto the pastry, fold the dough over, and cut into squares measuring two inches by two inches. Seal both sides of each square by folding the pasty down.

Place in the oven at 220°C, 425°F, Gas Mark 7 for four or five minutes, until golden.

Area review Why Ibn Battuta Gate is a commercial success With the office sector set to stride ahead of the residential market this year, we ask the newcomers of Ibn Battuta Gate Office Building what it’s like to work there.

Patchi has two big occasions to celebrate this year: the 30th anniversary of the brand in the UAE and a new head office in Dubai.

Following a blazing fire last September, administration manager Sawsan Al Kalil helped relocate Patchi’s head office to Ibn Battuta Gate Office Building.

While she says employees are fiercely loyal (she’s worked for Patchi for 15 years) and would follow the company to any location it chose, they’re extremely happy in the new premises. Here, she explains why: “After a huge fire destroyed Patchi’s custom-built head office, warehouse and factory in Al Quoz we had no choice but to find new premises.

“Immediate action was taken by management and the owner in search of an appropriate location, one that would cover all of our needs. Ibn Battuta Gate Office Building was the most convenient location we found.

Once this was approved, my role was designing the offices to match and meet our corporate identity.

“There is a wide choice of commercial property on the market but it can be difficult to find something suitable.

Management looked at a few properties but they didn’t quite match our

requirements – for a good location, price and parking facilities.

“Ibn Battuta Gate met our needs because we’re now midway between our boutiques in the city and our warehouses and temporary factory in Dubai Industrial City (DIC), which is 15 minutes away.

“We also have robotic parking – Ibn Battuta Gate Office Building is the only commercial area in Dubai that has this service. “We have two meeting rooms and a glass-partitioned cafeteria with access to the balcony; the rest of the office is an open-plan space that we’ve partitioned with cupboards.

“Since the Al Quoz site was custombuilt, the space we had was bigger with separate offices and few open working stations, but when we came here everyone liked the atmosphere of the open set-up and the surrounding area.

“We all feel the positive energy from the open-plan layout, the décor and the furniture – in Patchi colours – which are simple and refreshing. The sunshine coming through the windows creates a positive atmosphere, too, and helps us all to enjoy our new offices.”

Sam Wani reveals the latest movement in the market Emaar has reported revenue from villa sales dropping by nearly 17% in the first quarter of 2014.

The company generated revenue of AED256.91million from sales of villas in the first quarter compared to AED308.73million in the corresponding period in 2013.

According to Cluttons the number of sales transactions fell by 9% in the first quarter of 2014, while the number of villa transactions dropped by 46%.

Knight Frank Dubai announced a price rise of just 0.6% but predicts prices will continue to rise by15%.

HSBC expects this to be 12%, although evidence is pointing to a more subdued 10% â&#x20AC;&#x201C; still significant by international standards.

According to a survey initiated by the Dubai International Academic City (DIAC) and conducted by consultancy Deloitte, construction firms and

developers face a shortfall of 500,000 workers across all career levels and divisions as massive public and private projects fuel an unprecedented real estate boom.

The study showed that building and construction project management skills are most lacking among senior levels, according to 43% of the companies surveyed.

Likewise, 54% believe that designengineering skills are lacking among mid-level professionals, followed by civil engineering skills.

Dubaiâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s winning Expo 2020 bid boosted

the construction sector with average rents rising by 23% in Q1. HSBC bank predicts 45,000 new hotel rooms will be needed for the event.
