Pan emirates is definitely one of my favourites, but i also love Marina Home, and Cottage Chic. All these stores offer unique furniture that match my style. the pieces are of high quality, and you get good after sales service, which is an add-on that means a lot to me. At Pan emirates, we have a wide range of colours to choose from, which makes you less bound to picking shades and tones you may not prefer for your home.

how to: build the perfect room for toddlers N if ty ide a s to p u t you r ski lls to the test
STEP 1: Make sure the room is childproofed by the time he or she starts moving around. Sharp corners and electrical sockets are easily accessible to little ones, and need to be covered up.
STEP 2: Steer away from the mundane pink and blue themes, and try grey and pink with a hint of gold – for a girl’s room – or yellow and green with hints of brass for boys, which work perfectly without forcing gender boundaries. STEP 3: Invest the largest part of your
budget on neutral items and pieces of furniture, to use them years later for your next child, irrespective of gender. Once you have a solid foundation, you can build smaller details into your scheme. Pick a bamboo crib, or a street scroll top cot bed, that can cater to your child’s rapid growth.
STEP 4: Invest in a wall colour that is permanent. We suggest using wall decals that can be peeled off, incase you decide you need a change. These not only appeal to little ones, but you as well, as they 16 JANUARY-MARCH 2016 | www.bhomes.com
are beautifully crafted with prints of particular shapes, and are reusable too.
STEP 5: Plush toys do not have to be traditional and monotonous. You can find a range of toys that fit into your living room, as much as they would fit into a playroom or nursery. To get the look, opt for eco-friendly and handmade beauties. Supplied by Dima Kallides, Business Development Manager at Nest For Kids, Abu Dhabi Mall (nestforkids.ae).

value Nina Campbell shares with many of her clients is privacy. While the established interior designer shares her thoughts on Middle East traits and new fabric patterns, she’s careful to keep her clients close to her chest. And well she might, for many commissions come from Saudi and Jordanian royalty, and prominent families all over the world. Since its establishment in 1967, her eponymous practice, Nina Campbell Interiors, has flourished with each passing decade and is much favoured by both older and younger generations. The interior designer set up the company at the tender age of 22, after honing her eye for design with John Fowler at his esteemed company Colefax and Fowler. Her first commission was a large country house in Shropshire, England, and Annabel’s, an esteemed private members’ club in London.
I do a lot of research into the culture and surroundings “I went to Annabel’s a lot as a young girl,” she recalls. “It was the place you went to after dinner for dancing and music, and one evening I said to [the owner] Mark Birley that there was something in his club that could be improved. He said, “if you think you’re so clever why don’t you do it yourself”, and that was a great opening.” This was the start of a successful working relationship, with the fledgling designer taking on other clubs owned by Birley and the pair opening a shop together in 1970. A decade later she opened
20
JANUARY-MARCH 2016 | www.bhomes.com
her own home accessories boutique in Knightsbridge, and launched a fabric and wallpaper collaboration with Osborne & Little – both of which continue to be successful. While long-established, she shows no sign of slowing down or getting behind the times, a factor of her enduring appeal with clients of all ages. The designer recently announced her involvement in the £2 million north wing restoration project of a former monastery, and now country house, Combermere Abbey. Moving with the digital age, the designer also expanded her retail franchise online, where all her bespoke furniture, tabletop wares, accessories and fabrics are available. “We have a wonderful big print with beautiful velvet weaves that I showed my current Kuwaiti clients and they love it, so I produced ahead of time for them,” she reveals.
Better Homes Magazine | DESIGN INSPIRATION
“Over time my ‘English country’ aesthetic has crisped up, as life does, and it is more contemporary,” she continues. “But I am not a great follower of fashion, so endurance is very important to me as well as comfort. It’s like clothes; you don’t always want to be in something flamboyant, but rather something chic that feels comfortable. “It also has to be suitable; I do a lot of diverse work and I’ve worked in China, Jordan, Kuwait, Scotland, France and the USA, so it’s really important that the interiors suits the customs of the place you’re working in, but alters it to go with the moment. I do a lot of research into the culture and surroundings, and I also talk to the people I’m working with and see how they live their life and what they want from it.” Her fourth Kuwaiti project was on behalf of young clients who wanted a sophisticated approach to the typical
Middle Eastern style. “We put in a flavour of the Middle East, just a little sparkle, which is fun and beautiful when it’s handled properly,” she explains. A house in Jordan fused heritage with pops of bright colour – formal damask patterns were livened up with wonderful acid green and silver colourways, punches of purple with light grey. “We took the traditional and turned it upside down, creating a modernised version of heritage,” she says. Sometimes she has to focus on what the client doesn’t want from their surroundings. An apartment in Tokyo has no hint of the East, as per the request of the Japanese-American couple. Campbell explains: “Strangely, they didn’t want anything remotely Japanese because they said they already have the best of Japan and they didn’t want anything that an Englishman or a Frenchman thinks is Japanese when

making a fabric. I thought that actually makes sense – we might want an AngloChinese toile but the Chinese probably don’t. The obvious isn’t necessarily what is wanted so I always talk to the client a lot and get to know them.” The homes she’s worked on in the Middle East are spacious and accommodate public areas, private family spaces and staff quarters – a way of living that she’s come to admire. “I rather like the Middle East attitude to living, where – if you have the space – you have a private family part and the public entertaining part of the house, so guests don’t ever have to go into the inner sanctum of family life. I think that’s a rather beautiful way of living. “Entertaining was on a large scale in these projects so I would design these rather huge reception rooms with a lots of seating space as you need to expect 20 to 30 people to sit down. I used rich
Better Homes Magazine | DESIGN INSPIRATION fabrics on the chairs while sofas were in a background colour with wonderful embroidered cushions, so you get that richness but you keep the budget somewhere under control. “The family part is more casual and comfortable because there is always children involved especially in the women’s part of the house, where ladies lunch and family life and homework goes on. The men’s rooms are fun to do and are comfortable but have a richer aesthetic. They really mind about their rooms more than a man in the UK would, which is rather nice. Even though they are incredibly busy people it seems that the busier and more important they are the more time they find to give to you.” Her own home is compact in comparison, but has a story that only London dwellings can provide. Once an artist’s studio at the back of another house, Campbell completely renovated it into a three-storey home. She dug a basement to create two guest bedrooms, a bathroom, laundry room and storage space, with a small adjoining courtyard. The ground floor has a large area for
I rather like the Middle East attitude to living entertaining by the kitchen, which easily seats 12 but oft times 20, plus access to two gardens. Her bedroom is upstairs on the first floor. Perhaps inadvertently, she’s followed the Middle East concept of private and public spaces that she so admires, albeit in a smaller way. She redecorated a Chelsea home with Cathay Parade, a fabric she launched in 2014 with Osborne & Little. Inspired by a decorative piece of linen she found at a textile sale, she had it re-embroidered in India while her design team brought the illustrations back to life, with an exultant parade of Chinese people winding their way round tall feathery trees. The beautiful Eastern toile was used to make her curtains and changed from aqua to white linen with coral accents. “Sometimes I do see the most beautiful fabric in the world but then I’d need a completely different room, or house or even live in a different country,” she laughs. “By the time I’ve figured that out the moment has passed and I go home perfectly content to shut door on my own house.” ninacampbellinteriors.com

What sets your educational institution apar t from others in the city ? At British Orchard Nursery (BON) we follow the British National Early Years Curriculum guidelines, EYFS and OFSTED (Office for Standards in Education, Children’s Services and Skills), focusing on developing early years education through an in-depth planning programme unique to British Orchard Nursery. The process has been praised by a variety of educationalists, and has won us accolades. We take pride in its commitment to quality; and have 14 branches across Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah.
until which grade does it go up to?
BON offers early years education and daycare services to children from six months to four years old. Our highestclass ranking is foundation stage 1.
Why should a parent enroll their child at your nurser y ?
As part of our commitment to the Early Years Foundation Stage, we see parents as partners in children’s learning. They are their first educators and we know that a welcoming atmosphere with good communication between parents and the school is vital for their child’s development. They are a vital tool for British Orchard Nursery to see what we are excelling in, and provide feedback to the staff, so that we have the opportunity to develop the school.
AED 150,000 2BR 1,356 sq.ft.
Apar t from academics, what else does the nurser y focus heavily on?
We focus on extracurricular activities, languages, and corporate social responsibility (CSR), with an emphasis on being environmentally and socially responsible. A portion of our profit goes to the BON foundation to support the impoverished, orphanages, and old age homes. We also engage in many activities to reduce our carbon footprint. The nursery also contributes to the community, engaging in a wide range of activities such as local fundraisers and walkathons.
Does the nurser y offer anything else in par ticular ?
We host coffee mornings where parents are educated on special topics of interest. In addition, a wide range of after school activities, such as ballet, karate, and football are on offer. We also offer structured classes for students, and children not part of the nursery, in our gym facility through Gym Juniorz.
