We love this place…

Jumeirah 3

A Hollywood Hills-style retreat is what we discovered on setting foot inside Julia Dempster’s sublimely cool new home on Al Ghais Street. Julia, tell us what’s kept you in Dubai? I’ve been here for fifteen years in total now – after originally intending to stay for three! I arrived to do palace interior deisgn for the royal family and then went on to work on hotels and Emirates Towers. I then set up my own company, Interior Motives, eight years ago and now do projects all over the world, however, Dubai serves as a great base for my son Miro and I; the weather’s great, there’s a good quality of life and an eclectic bunch of people – which makes every day different. You moved into this villa just a few months ago, why Jumeirah? Well, I was living on The Palm for almost four years previously but the only school I could get Miro in to was the Jumeirah Baccalaureate School. I was driving for two hours to school every day and realised I was wasting too much time. So, I sold my villas there and began to look here. The fact that expats can’t buy properties in Jumeirah didn’t put me off, what was tough was finding a contemporary villa to beat such an amazing spot on The Palm. So many were built in the eighties and looked like they hadn’t been updated since. Fortunately, I knew the architect of this villa (Hamed Al Noohi) and was willing to wait for it. What was it about this particular property that you fell for? If I had designed it myself it’s exactly the style I would have gone for. Hamed Al Noohi built it from scratch and worked on it for three years, then I leased it through Better Homes. I’m not sure how practical the floor-to-ceiling glass windows will

be, but that’s one element I just love – the amount of light it lets in through the whole villa. I adore its simple design and open-plan, too. The floor is made entirely from limestone and the walls have invisible doors that push-open to reveal concealed bathrooms. The finishes are second-tonone; everything’s invisible, for example you can’t see any air conditioning ducts and it also came with quality fittings from Philippe Starck and sanitaryware and taps from Duravit. Talk us through the look you created inside. For every project I like to do something different. I invested in a castle in the UK beforehand which is totally over the top with warm, rich hues, tapestries and antiques. So, with this villa and its clean lines I wanted a contemporary look, but one that is still comfortable. It’s the total opposite to the castle; completely uncluttered. Its simplicity and all-white base works well with the Dubai climate, too. It feels very relaxing and fresh and it’s fabulous not having loads of stuff everywhere. Where did you shop to furnish it? I brought everything with me from my previous home on The Palm as I believe you should always buy things you love rather than for a specific interior, it just so happens it looks great here – it was a really good canvas to work with. In terms of specific buys, I bought the dining table from Caspaiou, the oversized pots from Art and Flower, the sofa, chairs and leather table from B&B Italia, the pendant lamp in the living room is from Floss and my study desk is by Singways. The lights you can see are by Aqua Creations, while the artwork

‘Each villa on the road is vastly different to the next... There is a strong sense of individuality here and I just love that’ and accessories are all by Caspaiou again – you’ll find them on Sheikh Zayed Road between interchange 2 and 3 and they have some truly great pieces. I’m currently waiting on some outdoor furniture too, which is being imported from Spain. I plan to create a Med villa look out there by the pool but still with an all-white scheme. Now that it’s complete inside, which is your favourite room? It has to be downstairs. The living space, which incorporates my living room, study, dining room and kitchen, is open plan throughout and I love being able to see all the way through as it means when Miro swims I can keep an eye on him and work or watch TV at the same time. I often sit at the dining room’s long table or spend time in the study area. It’s so versatile; it has to be downstairs for me. March 2011

How do you find living in Jumeirah? As an area it’s just great for everyday living. It feels a little like going back in time as I lived here 15 years ago but it’s so much more convenient nowadays. It’s a 15-minute journey to the airport, rather than half-anhour and the other great plus is its access to groceries. I hated not having a supermarket on The Palm, whereas here there’s a Choitrams, Spinneys and Co-op all within a five-minute drive. Where do you and Miro go to spend your free time? We use our pool everyday but also take a walk across to Jumeirah Beach or spend the day at Safa Park, which is very close by. There are loads of different playgrounds in the park as well as a lake where you can sail little boats or sit beneath a shaded area. For shopping, there are plenty of malls to head

to on the Jumeirah Beach Road, such as Town Centre and the Village Mall. There’s also some great little cafes and restaurants – like Lime Tree Café and Chillis, a Mexican spot Miro loves. What would you say is the best thing about life here? Definitely the locality to everything. I travel an awful lot so it’s great being so close to the airport; when you’re landing in the very early hours of the morning you don’t want to face a long journey. I also love the character of Jumeirah. The Palm felt quite fake to me as everything is so manufactured there. Here in Jumeirah 3, though, there are so many different elements – each villa on the road is vastly different to the next so each has its own style. There is a strong sense of individuality here and I just love that.

Love Thy Neighbourhood

Jumeirah Our need-to-know guide to the best bits of this beach-meetssuburban district Renting and buying This coastal district is comprised of Jumeirah 1, 2 and 3. Collectively they make for a peaceful environment dominated by suburban-style streets lined with individual villas, most of which house private gardens and pools. Despite its ‘suburb’ feel it’s just a stroll away from Dubai’s famous sandy beach. While the villas and tranquil surrounds make it a hit with families, it’s worth noting that expats can’t buy property here. Renting opportunities are endless, however, with apartments in plentiful supply, too: head beachside and snag one with an ocean-view. Whichever area you set up home in, Jumeirah’s situation between the old and new parts of the city, places it within easy reach of amenities, including the airport – just 15-minutes away - so it’s super-convenient for guests and regular travellers in and out of the emirate.

Shopping and a bite There’s no need to worry about where to do your weekly food shop here: would-be residents are minutes from a Spinneys, Choithram and a Co-op. For shopping on a larger scale, head to one of the Beach Road’s many malls. Big names on the block include Town Centre (www.towncentrejumeirah.com) and its sister store Mercato Shopping Mall (www.mercatoshoppingmall.com), while the pink façade of Jumeirah Plaza (04 349 7111) is virtually unmissable. Jumeirah Centre (www.jumeirahcentre. net) provides yet another spot to shop and includes high street names like The Body Shop and Benetton. If their many March 2011

‘Go to Madinat Jumeriah and you’ll be faced with a mindboggling pick of restaurants’ cafes and coffee shops don’t satisfy your appetite, try popular local eatery Maria Bonitas (www.mariabonitasrest.com) for a Mexican feast or go all-out, day or night, at the famous Madinat Jumeirah resort (www.jumeirah.com) where you’ll be faced with a mindboggling pick of restaurants and bars. Don’t miss its crowning glory, the wonderful Al Qasr Hotel (04 364 7111), whose Friday brunch is Dubai’s most extravagant by far.

Leisure time Jumeirah’s home to the famous Burj Al Arab and the best place to drink-in a view of the iconic venue is from the beach, where access is free. If it’s green grass you want, the district has two fantastic parks – Beach Park and Safa Park. The latter is popular with picnickers thanks to its expansive landscaped grounds, plus it’s home to a lake where you can hire boats and bob on the water. Jumeirah Mosque is a real landmark in the district

too. Open to Muslims and non-Muslims alike; the latter can have a special tour for an insight into Islam. If spas are your preferred way to spend your free time, you’ll find plenty of beauty spots in the Beach Road malls including Feet First (www.feet1st.com) and Nail Station (04 349 0123) in Town Centre and Sisters Beauty Salon (04 342 0787) at Mercato.

Schooling Parents can pick from five major schools in the area. For little ones, see Safa School (www.safaschooldubai.com), a private primary and member of the British Schools of the Middle East, or try its sister school, Horizon (www. horizonschooldubai.com) which admits children from KG1. Those from 3- to 11-years can also attend the Jumeirah English Speaking School (www.jess. sch.ae). For older kids, GEMS Jumeirah College (www.gemsjc.com), for years seven to 13, is a well-respected school.

Property picks

While expats can’t buy properties in the district, rental possibilities are plentiful. Sneak a peek at two available apartments in Jumeriah 3…

Studio for rent If you fancy being within a stone’s throw of sand and sea this studio, located just off the Beach Road (find it inside a gated villa compound), will place you directly on the white sands of Jumeirah Beach. But that’s not all it has to offer; on arrival you’ll find an Arabic-style community with seafacing views. Step inside and you’ll be pleased to find that the notoriously compact layout studios are known for is actually rather generous, with an open-plan kitchen that’s perfect for entertaining. On site you’ll find a community pool and a gym to boot and with the beach nearby we’re already picturing morning strolls before work. Facts and figures: AED 68,000, 516 square feet. Available now. Contact: BH consultant Heike Pfordte and quote reference AP260466.

Two-bed for rent After more space? This two-bed apartment could be the spot. It takes up residence within a brand new building and provides wouldbe residents with a slice of coastal living with its location on Jumeirah Beach. You can even take your pick of vistas for two-beds here – with your chosen view being reflected in the price. When it comes to the property itself, you’ll find an open-plan living space that’s bright and spacious but the real selling point is in the bedrooms; both come with en-suites, dressing rooms and – our favourite feature – sliding glass doors that open out onto large patios where you can drink-in your favoured panorama. Facts and figures: AED240,000, 2,258 square feet. Available now. Contact: BH consultant Diane Petty and quote reference AP267283.

especially if I have friends right there next to me, ideally with a nice drink to hand! Your interiors are inspired by… Travelling; it could be a great hotel or restaurant that gives me ideas. I really see my home as a playground where I can allow myself to be creative with styles and ideas – and at times go a bit crazy!

Where are your favourite spots to buy interior goods? Wherever I travel to – for example, rugs from Istanbul and colourful throws from India.

The next item you want to take home is… A six-metre long antique rug I’ve seen which is made-up of the most amazing collection of colours. I’ve just moved into a new flat and want to put it along the length of my hallway as a way to welcome my guests.

Your favourite room at home is… Definitely my kitchen: I absolutely love to cook,

duST BuSTerS On the move again? Sort your trash from your treasure with our guide to the ultimate spring clean and achieve a mess-free zone for good.

One small step… When it comes to the less-than-enviable task of an almighty spring clean, thinking of your property as a whole can be daunting. Take on one room at a time and finish it before moving onto the next. Get messy It may feel like you’re going against the grain, but to truly clear out your home you’ll need to turn it into a mess first. The best method is to retrieve everything from your shelves and cupboards, lay it all out and allocate items into a ‘bin’ or ‘keep’ pile. You may even find a few gems you’d forgotten about in the process. Storage solutions While it’s tempting to dash out and splash out on storage boxes make sure you de-clutter first. You’ll then be able to see exactly what storage solutions work best for you; be it large fitted wardrobes (go for floor-to-ceiling designs for maximum space) or wicker baskets in your bathroom. Let it go It’s tough to throw things away – but it’s also unlikely that every item you own carries sentimental value. As you master each space look at each item and ask yourself whether you really love it, use it, or want it – and bid farewell if not. Take out the trash If you have a skyhigh pile of magazines, an overflowing medicine cabinet or cupboard teaming with electronic items, don’t pack them up and take them to your next home; throw away what you no longer need – and recycle as you go. One man’s junk… Not all clutter is junk. While that old handkerchief or theatre ticket stub may look like rubbish to an outside eye, they may hold special memories for you. The solution? Buy a March 2011

beautiful box and tuck such pieces away at the top of your wardrobe to bring down as and when you want to reminisce. Bespoke builds Tailor-made storage serves as the ultimate clutter buster as it can be built to fit almost any unused space – for example dead room beneath a tall staircase or inside spacious alcoves. The result is a place to store your goods without cramping your open living space. If you can, request wires and cables to be hidden too.

Out of sight… If your bedroom is brimming with belongings you may find it hard to get a decent night’s sleep. Look to hidden storage, like under-the-bed drawers and keep those must-have items out of sight for a more restful night. Lotions and potions Unused bottles are a prime source of disarray in bathrooms, so bin those that have seen better days. If you have a small space that always looks cluttered, invest in wall-mounted fixtures or under-the-sink cabinets.

I’ll wear it one day… The golden wardrobe rule goes ‘if you haven’t worn it in a year, throw it out,’ so try to brave the bulge of an overflowing closet and create space in the process.

FROm TOP TO TOe On a dust-busting mission? Follow our can’t-fail guide to blitzing your abode Cast down curtains Whether your pad comes with curtains or you’re taking old pairs with you, have them dry-cleaned and banish hidden dust mites. Turn over Beds carry dust mites, too. Wash mattress protectors, turn your mattress and vacuum it clean. Air your covers outside as well for a truly fresh feel. Beat it Before laying rugs and mats on new floors beat them outside and leave them to air. Window cleaner With sky-high apartments and floor-to-ceiling windows, Dubai properties aren’t the easiest to keep clean – do your bit inside and give window panes a wash. Out of reach When it comes to dusting and cleaning, specifically target all areas that are usually out of sight (and mind). Think high shelves, inside kitchen cabinets, on top of curtain poles and beneath beds and sofas. Scrub, scrub, scrub Go beyond the usual once-over of ceramics such as toilets, baths and sinks, by scrubbing each with strong brushes and disinfectants. And remember… to set aside an entire day (more if your property is large) – this is no quick job! Open your windows as you do and prepare for a spring in your step when the task is over.

March 2011

Off the table Do magazines, empty glasses and remote controls constantly seem to litter your coffee table? Tabletops are a magnet for stray items so, if it bothers you, rethink your living room storage. A mix of open-shelving and closed cupboards (pictured below) will create a place to hide items you don’t want on show, and display those you do. On the wall If you have photos dotted all over the place or stuffed in drawers, why not dedicate a wall to them with a gallerylike display of framed images? You’ll not only create a great design feature in your home but leave space atop side-tables and mantelpieces, too. Paper free If your home office is in a mess, your mind’s likely to be in something of a muddle too. Give it a spring clean by shredding any papers that you no longer need and create a filing system for those you do. Keep it clutter-free by filing new paperwork and mail as soon as you receive it.

Child’s play Get little ones in on the cleaning act, too. If you have toys scattered all over the place, buy a funky chest where they can store their toys when play time’s over. Finders keepers Like bathrooms, kitchens can be a safe house for halfempty bottles and cleaning products: be ruthless and rid anything you don’t use. De-clutter surfaces further by introducing concealed storage like push-to-open drawers which you can fill with oils and dry products. Feeling charitable? If you’re prone to hoarding, why not donate your unwanted items to friends or charity? It’s a much better method than chucking them in the tip, or taking up more cupboard space. Clothes you no longer need, furniture you have no use for and unwanted gifts you feel guilty for parting with all make worthy hand-me-downs.

Regain Regain order order When When you you store your must-keep store your must-keep items items again, again, follow follow one one simple simple rule and organise rule and organise ‘like ‘like with with like’. like’. Whether Whether it’s it’s shoes shoes or batteries, you’ll or batteries, you’ll know know where where they they are are when when you you need them. It’s a simple need them. It’s a simple technique technique that that will will prevent prevent your home turning your home turning into into aa black black hole hole where where you you can’t can’t find a thing. find a thing. Revamp and recycle Take stock of your furniture before you decide what to trash or keep. Look at where it can go and whether it works with your new home. If neither applies, it’s time to pass it on. The good news is eclectic looks have never been more popular, so if there’s an item you’re loathe to part with but the style doesn’t seem to work, why not revamp or reupholster it? A new paint, finish, fabric or handles is all you need. And breathe… With a property as fresh as a daisy and clutter finally gone for good, there’s only one thing left to do in your trash-free abode: relax and enjoy. Cleaning and decorating will be all the more pleasurable from here-on-in now that you’re not faced with an uncontrollable mess. Just don’t be surprised if you don’t fancy moving again any time soon...

What’s more, parents won’t have to worry about awkward jagged edges when little ones are on the move. Practicality never looked better… Get the look: Buy the ‘Global Occasion set’ at Arkitel in DFC or Mall of the Emirates. Call 04 341 0661.

Shade SeekerS

If you plan to dine al fresco this season, be sure to place a table and chairs at the top of your outdoor furniture wish-list. For families, shapes that seat more than four make for a practical choice, like this sizeable Madrid set for six from ACE (left). Its oversized umbrella will protect you from the sun’s rays as you dine while its wipe-clean synthetic weave and glass surface mean you won’t have to worry about unsightly spillages sticking around for long. Statement PieCe

Low-level seating immediately invites you in to recline and relax – as well as provide an informal base for entertaining friends or family. Go against the grain of standard square shapes with deep-set curved chairs that look ready to hug its guest. For those who want to make a statement, or are swayed by changing trends, bold black is the colour of choice due to its versatility. We say, add white cushions for a classic Riviera-chic feel or bring in hot reds and oranges for a funky finish. Get the look: Buy the Jolene sofa set (below) at Home Centre. CitruS Flavour

If there’s one thing Designers Guild is known for it’s a use of bold colour – and what better way to inject a healthy dose of summer flavour in to your garden than with bright hues? Zesty lemon and juicy lime tones are one modern way to do just that and the London brand’s latest Tiana Collection has the look down to a tee. Opt for a distressed wrought iron table and chairs for a country garden look, adorn seats with printed cushions and shade it all beneath a standout parasol. We’re picturing picnic- worthy spreads and ice cold lemonade already… Get the look: Buy Designers Guild at Maison d’Art, Umm Suqeim 2. Visit www.maisondart.ae

Pl gged In Be on the cutting edge with our monthly round-up of the latest household appliances. Star buy

Sieman’s Wine Cooler

Fridge brimming with bottles? Why not invest in Sieman’s new fridge-like cooler, and store all manner of beverages there instead? It holds 394litres in total, with two temperature tones to suit your tipple of choice. Its reversible top-to-toe glass door gives it a modern – not to mention functional – tact, too. And the best bit? No more luke warm drinks come summer time. Buy it at Better Life stores, AED23,490.

Palson Griddle Plate Health-concious eaters will love this mobile griddle plate. Its tilting base causes fat to drain from your chosen meat or fish, leaving you with the best bits. It’s an easy one to use, too, with cool handles (no burnt fingers here), a thermostat to avoid an overcooked dinner and, best of all, it’s dishwasher safe – so you don’t have to waste time scrubbing it clean before using it all over again… AED363.50 March 2011

Hitachi LED TV The Eros group is behind the launch of the latest must-have appliance for your home: a LED TV. The design is super-slim, the colour pitch black, the picture ultra-vivid and the approach (somewhat surprisingly) eco-friendly, thanks to backlighting which uses minimal power. Take your pick from a 42, 47 or mighty 55-inch model. With screens like this, who needs the cinema? AED699.

Gigaset Home Office If you work from home, you may want to take a step up from your mobile and plump for an office-worthy phone instead; like the Gigaset DL500A. It has a phone book with space for up to 500 contacts, storage for clients’ addresses and an array of ring tones. But, bonus points go to its multiple handsets which you can set up throughout your home to avoid missing that business call. AED699.

Samsung Aquatic Whether your home gathers dust at a rapid rate, or pets’ unsightly hairs keep resurfacing on your sofa, the masterminds at Samsung have come up with a multi-cyclone vacuum that sucks up more than your average dirt. The compact design whisks up air and water to consume even the most airborne mites and allergens – leaving you with one very healthy home. AED699.

Bedtime Buys Still struggling to sleep? It could be time to invest in a practical solution, says Mihir Patel, CEO of Amancorp. Read his best buys for some much-needed shut-eye…

Better bedding A good quality mattress and bedding is the best place to start and an orthopaedic mattress can make a huge difference. My tip is Duxiana mattresses (www.duxiana. com) – widely-regarded as the world’s best.

Practical solutions for your household dilemmas

Airborne allergies

How do I... Get a better night’s sleep? Six ways to zzzz’s…

1

Dreamy scents If you’re something of an insomniac pop a few drops of lavender oil on your pillow before you head to bed. Known for its calminducing qualities, it’s the oil of choice to reduce stress and help you relax – sending you to the world of nod in no time.

2

Blissful BouDoirs Decorate your bedroom with snoozing in mind: it should be a sanctuary in which to escape daily stresses and strains, so leave distractions at the door. Choose soothing, light hues over bold tones and only put photos on the wall behind your bed to avoid triggering any thoughts.

3

total Black-out Darkness is an absolute must for a good night’s sleep. Dubai’s sunny climate means it’s natural to wake-up as daylight arrives. Trick your body into thinking it’s night time by lining your curtains or erecting black-out blinds. March 2011

4

less is more Watching TV in bed may feel like a little luxury, but if you’re really serious about your shut-eye, banish any items that don’t spell ‘sleep’ to other rooms in the house; that means televisions in the living room, work desk in the study and lively pets downstairs.

5

log off A myriad of technological mediums keep our minds in a constant state of overtime. How do you expect to switch off for the night without logging off? Ban checking mobiles, emails and social networks before bed and tackle them in the morning instead.

6

Bath time Stress can be a key source of sleep-deprivation so find an activity that soothes your body and mind before you turn off the light. Try a relaxing soak in the tub to tranquil tunes, cosy candlelight and a relaxing aroma, like lavender (drop it in your bath, too).

If you’re often ill, suffer from allergies or wake up feeling congested this could all be due to poor Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) as a result of our dependence on air conditioning. You can achieve and maintain good air quality by having your ducts or air con units cleaned every six months to a year, where mould, fungus and bacteria all grow. Try SaniService (www.saniservice. ae) who use an eco-friendly method to clean systems thoroughly – from the evaporator to the drainage tray, and not just the filters.

A breath of pure air Inbetween seasonal cleaning, Airfree Air Purifiers (www.airfree. ae) are a great solution, especially for asthma and allergy sufferers. They use internal heat to sterilise the air of bacteria, viruses, mould and all micro-organisms but without warming up the room or requiring any form of maintenance. Their silent operation and dimmable LED lighting also make them a great buy for children’s bedrooms. You can pick them up at UAE pharmacies and Babyshop.

one for the kitchen

It just goes to show; even your kitchen sink doesn’t have to be standard in this town. Service staff and chefs are provided, depending on the chosen menu, and we can arrange tailor-made decorations and flowers. Best for: That big birthday, anniversary or engagement do. Ask about their cocktail parties and afternoon teas. Top bites: ‘Flying buffets’ – a miniature range of bitesized portions, great for stand-up parties. Guests: 12 plus. Minimum spend: From AED 250 per person.

Student Biryani Taster: Don’t let the name of this place put you off; it’s not just a stop-off for rowdy students. It would be rude not to order its namesake biryani but there’s plenty more chicken dishes up for grabs (including drumsticks, fried pieces and curries) making it a takeaway to satisfy nagging fast food cravings. Location: Karama. Contact: 04 366 9992 www.studentbiryani.com

2

Karachi darBar Taster: If you want king-size portions that are as large as they are cheap, this is the name to call. It could be likened to Ravi’s in terms of quality – and the fact that it will cost you a pittance to order quite a feast. Stick to classic rather than complicated dishes and you can’t go wrong. The good news is the service is equally attentive whether you eat out or in. Try their well-spiced kebabs or go traditional with a can’t-fail curry like chicken masala teamed with a fluffy naan. For the cabbage and mustard accompaniment, first cut the cabbage into 1.5 inch-thick ribbon strips and blanche them before setting aside. 6. Mix the Dijon and Coleman’s mustard, sugar (80g) and rice vinegar (30g) together to form a sauce. 7. Roll the cabbage into thick, round wheels and place onto a plate. Top liberally with the mustard sauce mixture. 8. Present the dishes side-by-side on a shared plate (see image overleaf). WaSabi PraWnS Serves 1 90g shrimps

Roll all of the prawns in the potato starch (or create a mixture of flour and corn starch in equal parts). 3. Fry up the ‘dusted’ shrimp in the oil until they’re golden-brown in colour and then place on a napkin to remove any excess oil. 4. Heat the pan back up and flash sauté the prawns with the wasabi sauce just long enough to heat the sauce through and coat the prawns’ bodies. 5. Plate and garnish with crab roe (orange-coloured crab eggs).
