Motor City

Souraya Farraj tells us why she’s fallen in love with family life in the Green Community

Souraya, tell us what brought you to Dubai and Motor City? I was actually hired direct from university to come to the emirate and work in one of its IT nationals, IBM. That was around 10 years ago now! It was there that I met my husband, Mazen, and much later – in November 2009, one month before I had our son Ferris – we both decided to move from The Greens to The Green Community. We really wanted to provide our kid with a community; somewhere he could go outide and play and wander around safely. As I’m a working mum the amenities here also appealed to me as I don’t have to worry about travelling far to keep him entertained each day. What made you choose The Green Community specifically? There were many different reasons,

the main one being the villa itself – we really liked how spacious it was, as well as the sense of community around us. Also, if you go to other developments in Dubai they don’t seem to provide the same high standards – be it the pool or the security. For example, Mazen and I recently went to the Multiplex who run the Green Community and as we walked into the room there were arund 25 cameras on a huge wall monitoring the whole development. That’s something that gives you a really good sense of security as they always know who’s coming in and out. How are the leisure facilities here? Fantastic. They have party rooms (one of which we booked for Ferris’s 1st birthday), playgrounds, swimming pools, fields where kids can play and a huge lake on the other side that you can walk or cycle around.

That’s how we spend our mornings as a family, a 30-minute cycle around the lake before coming home and going to work. It’s great fun. While each community has its own facilities you’re not limited to one pool or area, either, you have access to the entire development. It’s also good for everyday shopping; there’s a small Spinney’s within walking distance that’s perfect for basic groceries and a larger one across the road that you’d need a car to reach. I also go to the Mall of the Emirates, which is about a 10-minute drive away, for a big Carrefour shop and there’s La Marché at Arabian Ranches which is good for one-off products you may not find elsewhere.

I love its book store as well as ELC (Early Learning Centre) as I get invited to so many kids’ parties and it’s the perfect place to go and buy gifts. We’ve been pleasantly surprised by the different outlets that have opened up here as when we first moved across, over a year ago, there were no real shops, just Spinneys. I also have friends who come from the Arabian Ranches to Motor City to have lunch, book into a salon or go for a fitness class. Caractere and Transform Body Ladies Centre both do a good job and are reasonably priced. To be honest, there are shops opening almost every day too so there’s no shortage of places to go to.

We hear the shopping at Motor City is great – do you have any top spots? Absolutely, there’s a long line of different stores, eateries and beauty salons here now.

How about during your time off, where can you go as a family close by? The Polo Club at the Arabian Ranches is a great place to go. I take Ferris there as he

just loves to see the horses and sometimes rides the ponies there. Dubai Autodrome is obviously right next to us too and it’s somewhere we plan to go on Wednesday nights when you can take your bicycles along for a cycling evening. They have big motor races on Fridays if people are interested in watching that as well. We do like to venture further out at weekends but, if we do feel like hanging out closer to home, we often head along the strip of Motor City shops and cafes as they’re all set next to one another in a long line which means that Ferris can wander along and we can stop-off for lunch. There are a few good restaurants in the area as well if we don’t want to go too far. My favourite has to be the Cedar Tree, a Lebanese restaurant as I think it offers some of the best food around here. Another Chinese eatery, Chin Chin, serves up some great dishes too. How about at home; where is your favourite room to spend time? For me my favourite area has to be the study room, I just love it. Even though I sit and work there, it’s cosy, different and I really like the colours. It also brings back good memories as we have lots of souvenirs placed around the room which Mazen and I brought back from our travels: the African masks on the wall are from a May 2011

holiday in Cape Town while the boxes are from Thailand and other tiny bits we’ve collected from here and there decorate our wooden bookshelves. Where did you shop to furnish the rest of your home? We don’t usually go to one place to shop but have decorated our home over time instead – we go everywhere and whenever we spot something we love we just buy it. My personal favourite is Flamant and another is Marina – the more classic pieces you see in our home are from there, such as the wood pieces in our lounge. Whereas, any more modern items we picked up at THE One. Another great shop is Q Home Décor – the four-poster bed in our main bedroom is from there and I think they have some really great stuff. Overall, what do you consider to be the best elements of life in GC? The best thing for me is the home we have built together and I also love the community – it’s so peaceful and quiet. I think it really gives you a break away from the hectic life you have in Dubai and gives you a secluded feel, far from the city’s fast pace. Having that separation allows me to leave work behind and focus on my family life; baby, husband and home.

All you need-to-know about life in the city’s brand new community

Renting and buying Located along the Emirates Road, Motor City’s latest development offers propertyhunters lots of apartments at Uptown Motor City and villas, bungalows, townhouses and lakeside flats at The Green Community. Whatever type of property you seek, all display fantastic finishes and are set within landscaped gardens, providing a safe and idyllic community. Expats can buy as well as rent here too, making it possible to build a long-term home. What’s more, with its location a 10minute drive to the Mall of the Emirates, 15minutes to The Dubai Mall and 25minutes to DXB airport, access to the rest of the city is simple and swift. Each building comes complete with parking facilities too, so you won’t have the headache of where to leave your car.

Shopping and a bite New residents certainly won’t be short of spots to shop here. Go to the community’s centre and bag groceries at its large Spinneys. Or, take your time along the May 2011

long strip of stores and eateries at Motor City (neighbouring Arabian Ranches residents are known to flock here too) for an abundance of options. We say get a caffeine fix at Cafe Nero, Starbucks or Caribou Coffee or stop by Le Succes Bakery for lunch (a residents’ favourite for fresh bread and pastries). For bigger bites, try Indian restaurant Boujan or Lebanese Al Arrab. For a tasty takeaway, meanwhile, London Fish and Chips is a must. You’ll be able to take care of practical tasks too, thanks to pharmacies, an Al Ansari Exchange and Pets Corner.

Leisure time If you live in Motor City, it’s impossible to ignore the Dubai Autodrome (www. motorcity.ae), home to adrenalinepumping motor sports. Racing fanatics can head to the tracks to watch some of the world’s speediest drivers or, if you fancy a go yourself, sign up to its Racing School or burn rubber at Kartdrome. If horse-riding is more your cup of tea, make for the Arabian Ranches’ Dubai Polo and Equestrian Club (www.poloclubdubai.

com). Just a short drive away, the whole family can take-in a polo match (be sure to pack a picnic) or enjoy riding lessons. If fitness is your thing, return to the Motor City shops and try Exhale for yoga classes and more or enjoy some well-earned pampering at one of its beauty salons – we like Caractere (044 5729 85) or Gladys Beauty Salon (04 335 5651).

Schooling Nurseries are in plentiful supply here. Choose from Kidville (opening soon near Spinneys), Jebel Ali Village Nursery at the Polo Club (www.jebelalinursery. com), Emirates British Nursery (www. emiratesbritishnursery.com), Building Blocks (www.building-blocks.ae) or Seashells Nursery (04 341 3404). Herna Maki sushi roll

Herna Maki susHi roll Serves 2 sushi rice • 120g 0.5g nori sheet • 24g/2 pieces • 20g avocado tempura prawn • 10g kani (crabstick) • 5g Tobikko (Caviar) • Spicy mayonnaise to taste • 1. Place the nori sheet on top of your bamboo mat. 2. Spread the sushi rice on top of the nori and then turn upside down. 3. Dip the tempura prawn into tempura butter and deep fry until crisp. 4. Place the fried tempura prawn on top of the nori rice. 5. Slice the avocado and crabstick. Add a thin layer of spicy mayonnaise on top and then roll all of them together in one long, tube-like roll. 6. Thinly slice avocado and place it on top of the roll. 7. place the roll to one side. 5. Put two pieces of kani (crabstick) on the bamboo mat, shred the kani into small pieces and then put the sushi roll on top. 6. Wrap the roll gently, using the bamboo mat, so that the crabstick sticks to the top of the roll (as pictured above). 7. Cut the roll into six even pieces. 8. Or, if you prefer, substitute the topping with shredded crabstick and spicy tuna.
