INDEX 2015 How to have all the fun of the fair

Meet the interior stylist who transformed her neighbour’s villa

Welcome Temperatures are beginning to soar, and transformations are being seen all around. Whether it’s seasonal collections in stores, summer trends to covet, or preparation for Ramadan, change is in the air. That’s also the case at Better Homes Magazine, and it’s with great excitement that I introduce myself, Nicola Monteath, as the newly appointed Editor. May has certainly been exciting so far. My first day on the job saw me heading off to a home tour – read about it on page 26. And after sourcing items for this month’s style wish list (page 13), and rounding up Salone del Mobile (page 17), I have jotted down a list of must-buy items and trends to adapt my home to this season. One event I’m particularly excited about this month is INDEX, the largest international design exhibition in the Middle East. Heading there? Get geared up with our sneak peek on page 32. If you think it’s time to switch things up for yourself, with the purchase of a new home or rental, take a look at the property section from page 45 and embark on an adventure. Just like me.

Create your own wonderland To mark 150 years of Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, British brand Rug Maker has produced two quirky, illustrated rugs which feature characters from the tale. Granted an exclusive license to reproduce John Tenniel’s artwork from the British Library’s original collections, the two monochrome designs – ‘The White Rabbit’ and ‘Alice Drink Me’ – were hand-woven in Kathmandu Valley in Nepal by highly-skilled Tibetan and Nepalese weavers, handknotting Swiss aniline dyed New Zealand wool onto cotton warps and wefts. And if yet more reason were required to buy one, Rug Maker supports GoodWeave – the global nonprofit organisation that ensures child labour is not used in the manufacturing process. rug-maker.com

Welcome to MarMarLand A new online shop that delivers has arrived in the UAE

ONE to WATCH

It was an idea partially born of a refusal to compromise on taste: “I wanted to make our home reflective of the fact we have toddlers running around, but refused to have ugly, plastic ‘Made in China’ toys around my living room, or teddy bear and princess bedding”, says Maren Gerber, founder of MarMarLand, a UAE-based online store retailing children’s toys and all sorts of room decorations. But beyond the aesthetic reasons, at the heart of Gerber’s business is a desire to offer quality. “Our products are quality tested, safe for children and, if possible, organic. We take the best brands and products from a variety of countries and search for new upcoming brands and innovative products. We get inspired by customers, interior stylists and the children around us.” Customers can find a range of products – from accessories and décor items for babies’ nurseries and kids’ rooms, through to toys and gifts – sourced from Denmark, Sweden, Germany, Netherlands, England, France, Australia, New Zealand and the US. “Ferm living, a brand rooted in Denmark, has products designed with a distinctive graphic edge while maintaining Scandinavian design traditions. Luckyboysunday is another Danish brand of modern, luxury knitted art toys and soft furnishings for the home. Look out too for Anne-Claire Petit, a Dutch brand with recognisable colour schemes and ‘feel good’ products, ranging from an extended animal family to baby toys, and a range of deco objects to furniture.” And the name MarMarLand, from where did it derive? “It comes from my children’s names - daughter Marleni (3) and son Marnus (1). The word ‘land’ highlights that we like to help parents create spaces, where their children love to play, relax or sleep. Spaces with room for imagination and creativity, rooms where children feel safe and special in their own little land.” marmarland.com

My style Ratna Sharma The managing director of CASA-ELAN on the importance of cleanliness and the constant need to redesign her home.

but a good book in my hands is how I fall asleep every night. Who is your all-time favourite interior designer? I do not have a favourite interior designer. As a professional, one sees fabulous work by so many designers that are well known internationally, but then I might see an amateur’s project and find it fascinating. It’s all a matter of taste and handling of the aesthetics of design of any given space. I do not have any item in my home that is a ‘designer item’, but I am a designer and I love the things I produce, so you could say that everything in my home is a CASAELAN design item.

Where do you live and what type of building is it? In Business Bay, in a penthouse with a fabulous view of the iconic Burj Khalifa on one side and the Meydan Hotel on the other.

Who do you live with? I live alone. Solitude is a luxury I have deep regard for and indulge in to the maximum. How would you sum up your home decor style in one sentence? It’s an eclectic mix including antique Indian solid silver accents with contemporary and classic pieces that are clean, simple and comfortable. Who or what inspires your style? My home is a place where I am at my most creative. To be able to think and create, I need to have everything around me in perfect order. Symmetry is not important to me but right angles are an obsession. I love detail. The spaces that I design are simple yet elegant. At a glance, they might seem too plain for some people,

look closer though and you will find gems of design details in the carving, the accessories, the furnishings, and the wall finishes. Basically, nothing will stand out as garish and in your face, but on the whole it comes together as over-the-top luxury. To me, less is more. How does your personality come through in your home? I have pictures of my son and my parents on my bedside. Other than that I love ‘The Kiss’ by Klimt. It hangs above my bed reminding me that love between a man and woman is beautiful. I keep my home scrupulously clean. Not only of dust and dirt but of negative energy from my very stressful job. My table tops, cabinets and walls are mostly empty. I dislike clutter immensely! Name some of your favourite items in your home? My books. I have thousands of them, some of them are first editions from the early 1900s. Reading is a passion. I do not have a lot of time for now,

How much does your job and the company influence your personal style at home? My job and business have barely any impact on my home. I have been doing this work for about 30 years now and according to tradition, I should have a particular style I call my own. However, I don’t. On my travels to Thailand, Morocco, Italy, UK and Russia I have been inspired, and designed spaces either with a hint of, or completely in, the traditional styles of those countries. I absolutely love doing different styles. It’s extremely exciting and I thrive on the challenge. How many items, or which services, from CASA-ELAN have you used in your own home? Everything in my home, other than a few antique pieces I inherited from my grandfather, have been designed and manufactured by my factories. My two production units, one for woodwork and the other for upholstery and curtains, are my playgrounds. It’s on rare occasions that we are free from client commitments and we have time to work on something for my home. I have this need to change the design in my home every now and then. It is frequently renovated, especially the room belonging to my son. Everytime he visits I redecorate it for him. It drives him crazy, but I love surprising him! elandubai.wordpress.com

LET THERE BE LIGHT

We all know that lighting can make or break a room, but at Salone del Mobile, the light itself was the centre of most designs. Most notable were the carpet-grazing crystal chandeliers at Patrizia Garganti – up to two metres in diameter, dominating their environs and basking all who gazed at them in glittering white light. World-famous porcelain house Lladro took the trend one step further with its delicate hanging shades. Although only modest in size, they were grouped in staggered clusters of eight and more – their voluptuous domed shape echoing the SRUFHODLQ EDOOJRZQHG ÀJXULQHV IRU which Lladro is famed.

DESIGN YOUR OWN DREAM Missoni stepped away from its signature technicolour stripes, daring to cross into muted tones and pastels – another key trend dominating Milan this year – for its ethereal bedroom design. Whimsical motifs, chiffon drapes, and layers of sumptuous rugs took Missoni fans by surprise – and won the brand some new followers too. The lesson here? Don’t be afraid to deviate from your normal style. While the big Italian hitters – and there were plenty, including Fendi Casa, Minotti and Poliform – excelled at the show with their signature styles, Missoni’s unexpected triumph breathed new life into its collection.

REVEL IN REPETITION

From geometric tessellations to striking stripes, Milan’s most memorable motifs were repeated – over and over again. But this wasn’t a lazy attempt at getting maximum impact for minimal effort: the designs were ambitious, and their playfulness paid off. Kabuki, D à RRU VWDQGLQJ ODPS FUHDWHG by Ferruccio Laviani for Kartell, was memorable for its Arabesque tessellation of triangles – hypnotic to the eye, and lace-like to the touch. And repetitive SDWWHUQV LQà XHQFHG IRUP too: concentric circles weren’t just the dominant pattern in Alotof Design’s seating range – the metal shapes were actually used to construct the benches and chairs themselves.

GO NATURAL

For years, the Italian approach to wooden furniture has been to coat it in lacquer, and polish until it gleams. But things have changed. At last, the grain, texture and hues of untreated wood were laid bare in Milan – and there was

hardly a lick of glossy paint in sight. Hats off to Omologie, whose stubby modular cabinets were made using dovetail joints, without any glue or metal components. Also, bravo to UKbased design house H, for its innovative

hanging wardrobe constructed solely of wood and leather. Of course, Riva 1920 has long championed naked wood in its no-nonsense furniture pieces – this year’s dining range was so minimalist, it ERUGHUHG RQ ² JDVS ² ÁDWSDFN DHVWKHWLF

Designer spotlight As the Cities boutique in Galleria Mall, Dubai, gears up to host an installation of his work from May 26-June 2, we speak to Lebanese designer Nayef Francis about his designs, all of which are handmade in Lebanon

How would you best describe your style? Or do you even have a ‘style’? On a general note, I would say minimalistic yet functional with a strong functionality. Removing all the unneeded details and heightening what is the core use to an aesthetical level, so that it not only serves its purpose but adds a visual elevation to its surrounding.

Love Thy Neighbour Stuart Dudley’s eclectic home brings together the best of luxury, memories, and technology. And what’s more, it was styled by his next-door neighbour

W

hen we arrived at Stuart Dudley’s three-bedroom villa in Jumeirah Golf Estates, we weren’t greeted by him, but rather his lovely neighbour, Katie Slater Temby, an interior stylist with a background in fashion retail and textiles, who helped Stuart’s dream home come to life with her artistic and creative touches. Katie looks every bit the stylist, dressed in a crisp white shirt, denim, cobalt blue heels, and simple gold jewellery. Her style is quite similar to her personal home design aesthetic – minimalist and contemporary – and although Stuart’s home is almost poles apart FRPSDUHG WR KHUV VKH FRQĂ€UPV WKH\ enjoyed decorating the house together. “It’s worked between us because he has great and expensive taste and so do I,â€? she says while giving us a tour. “I actually got this job after he came over to my place and saw that I kept changing it up often. He then told me he needed some help with his, and so I came on board.â€? Stuart Dudley, who works for Kerzner International here in Dubai, moved to this villa late last year, from The Springs. “I did quite a bit of research before purchasing. Whispering Pines (at Jumeirah Golf Estates) is very well constructed and the design is unique within Dubai, with the layout of the villas being much less regimented than usual, creating greater privacy and also a very pleasant ambience,â€? says Stuart. “Additionally, being situated at the intersection of Al Khail Road and the 311, the location is excellent with very convenient access to all areas of Dubai.â€? The bachelor, from England, enjoys entertaining friends with a barbecue by the poolside – he stripped off all the grass and replaced it with astro turf – or in his modern-style dining room which features a light-brown round wooden table with four white chairs, and a high bar table towards one corner, giving the space a laid-back vibe. “We put in the bar table to make it more casual, for breakfast or tea time,â€? says Katie. “He had a party here not long ago, and the space worked so well because of all the different height levels – high and low seating – all around.â€? We gathered from Katie that Stuart has a serious penchant for rugs, loves picking up collectables on his travels, is obsessed with the colour orange – he even painted the golf buggy which comes with the house this colour – and has an ardent love for plants. Every nook and corner features a mature plant placed in lovely coloured pots,

which Katie tells us she had to convince Stuart to use as his original pots did not suit the “eclectic, luxurious space. The minute you enter the house you can feel that refreshing, airy vibe, with off-white and brown couches, hues of orange seen in the cushions, leather armchairs, and a living room and dining space that opens up to a spacious terrace looking out to the Dubai Marina skyline. Towards one corner of the house lies the monochrome black and white kitchen, equipped with Miele appliances. This is probably the only untouched space – other than the bathrooms which Katie believes are timeless and beautifully developed – but Stuart has plans of adding in a backsplash and ceiling lights to make it more ambient. Three months ago there was nothing but a few mattresses and items in the house. When Stuart moved in, all he brought was a couple of chairs, artwork,

a coffee table, and rugs from his travels. But the house layout is a masterpiece in itself. “The great thing about these properties is that they have amazing features such as tile work, marble Ă RRULQJ DQG YDXOWHG FHLOLQJV WKDW , personally love. Katie tells us that ZKHQ VKH Ă€UVW EHJDQ ZRUNLQJ ZLWK Stuart she asked him for inspirational images, and then set a budget, so that the process was streamlined. “It’s important to do it this way, as if you see a piece that you like, you have to buy it instantly. They were actually well under budget – although there’s still more to be done. “We are having artwork commissioned. With interiors, they can’t actually be forced as then it starts looking too cookie cutter, or like a furniture store. I don’t personally like that, and I think being in a home is more about looking at all those pieces that have meaning to you.â€? And that’s exactly what the space LV WR 6WXDUW D KXPEOH DERGH Ă€OOHG ZLWK prized possessions from his travels, which remind him of each country he has visited. Stuart’s rug fascination actually helped tie together many rooms, and there isn’t a room in the house without one. If he didn’t have an age-old rug for the space, he bought one, either from his trip abroad, or the Blue Souq in Sharjah. “Rugs add such a lot of character to a house, especially when WKH Ă RRUV DUH DOO KDUG 7R EH KRQHVW the cost of handmade rugs is not appreciably more than the cost of those that are mass-produced, but the results are much more unique and special. If you want a unique piece of beauty that will grow better with age, and provide a lifetime of memories, then there is nothing better to collect,â€? says Stuart. He loves things of ethnicity. Every rug has been handmade, and is either antique Turkish or Persian. “Because he had these vintage pieces, we tried to make it work for the space. Thing is, he also has a very contemporary side – with a love of technology – so we had to make all those different themes come together,â€? says Katie. Facing the ultra-

There is also a secondary system feeding music to all areas of the house for more casual listening purposes, which is delivered via a Sonos multi-room set up using a mixture of B&O and Geneva Sound lab speakers and devices,â€? he says. When asked if there were any disagreements over design, Katie points out that the sound system was one of them, mainly because of the appearance and positioning, but it was nothing major. “He did change the colour of it, and compromised on the positioning, which was really nice,â€? she says. Stuart’s love of gadgets comes into play the minute he arrives home and starts playing around with the newly installed /LYROR :LĂ€ 7RXFKLVP WRXFK VZLWFK which allows the entire home to be smart wired (operable through a single device – remote or app), integrating the technology into his busy lifestyle. The father of two, Olivia (12) and George (20), has also designed rooms for his daughter and son, so that they can feel at home when they visit him on their school break from England. These double up as guest rooms when family or friends visit. Light pastel shades of green are seen throughout Olivia’s room, with touches of white in the bedside tables, chest of drawers, and two-toned drapes. Stuart knew exactly what he wanted when he discussed this one with Katie, and went down the Ralph Lauren style route. NICK RYES Interior Designer

I say paint‌

Paint has long been the go-to method for those looking to update their space instantly. It’s ease of application, and low costs, have stood the test of time over the years, making it the most opted for technique for those who want to transform the theme or feel of a room. Whether you are looking for an airy, dramatic, or intimate and cosy feel, it can all be achieved with paint. Plus, you can give it any effect you like – whether sponging, distressing, ragging, or colourwashing, to name a few, to give it dimension. When choosing whether to go down the wallcovering or paint route, the main factors to consider are obviously the costs involved, and ease of application. To begin with, preparing a damaged wall with primer paint takes VLJQLÀFDQWO\ OHVV WLPH FRPSDUHG WR prepping it for wallcovering application – which can be a tedious process, and involves a number of chemicals and stripping tools which rack up costs. While paint and wallcoverings are both available in an array of colours DQG ÀQLVKHV WKH IRUPHU LV GXUDEOH LQ rooms with high moisture levels ï for

over time. Finishes such as semigloss, high-gloss, or matte are all on offer for paint, and these are not only inexpensive but can also be applied by a novice, cutting out the cost of having to hire someone to do the job for you.

Move to… Dubai Motor City The area is completely unique, says Better Homes’ Ozlem Ucar

The motor-sports theme at Dubai Motor City is the core element of the vicinity. Residential units and business towers make up the space in this pedestrian-friendly neighbourhood which boasts a built-down infrastructure. There’s plenty to do within this community, as it’s packed with motor-sports facilities, shops and supermarkets, restaurants and cafés, gyms, communal swimming pools, parks, play areas for children and schools. The area has four key complexes, Green Community Motor City, Uptown Motor City, Business Park Motor City and Dubai Autodrome, with each one delivering a distinctive experience. Dubai Autodrome, the most renowned one from the lot, has become the focal point throughout the community, and within the UAE. Here you can step out of your house to enjoy go-karting, or

watch bike-and car-races, including the Porsche ME Cup and Formula Gulf 1000. Those without cars can easily take the public bus, or hail a taxi, from the area itself, which makes it convenient for families living in the area. Various accomodation options are available for those looking to move into the neighbourhood. Single professionals and couples can opt for studios or one-bedroom apartments, while families can choose between larger three-bedroom apartments or two-and three-bedroom townhouses and villas.

Ask the agent Abisoye Odimayo, Residential Consultant, Green Community Office Investors and homeowners still keep Motor City as their top choice, even though over the last few months, the number of transactions have significantly slowed down as sale prices have generally been stable. Attractive investments are available in this community, especially for end users, due to the spacious apartments on offer. Those looking to buy can do so for approximately AED900 per sq.ft. While those looking for rentals, can choose from a studio at AED55,000, up to AED160,000 for a 3-bedroom apartment in Uptown Motor City. The relaxed bhomes.com

Green Community Motor City community offers lake-view terrace apartments, townhouses, bungalows and villas from up to AED380,000 for 5-or 6-bedroom villas. Motor City offers a lifestyle comparable to none other, amongst the neighbouring residential communities, and showcases a wide array of amenities including the race track from which the community gets its name, supermarkets (such as the city’s biggest Spinneys), medical centres, cafÊs and restaurants, retail and commercial businesses, sports facilities and communal pools, play grounds and gyms. Ideal family living Fabio Lombardi (Ref No. AP35373)

Ask the agent Mohammad Muneeb Khan, Residential Consultant, Barsha Office Barsha, the area a mere stone’s throw from The Greens and The Views is an interesting one coming up on most people’s radars. It’s divided into three spaces, for ease of reference, with Barsha 1 and around the Sheikh Zayed Road being the area where majority residential apartments are located. At the moment, these units are in great demand for rent, and still receiving some appreciation every year. A 1-bed average rent is around AED80-85k, while a 2-bed goes for AED100-120k, and 3-bed for AED140-150k. 4-5 bed villas can be found in compounds and go for AED220-240k. The second segment is the villa

community in Barsha 1, 2, 3 and 4. These plot sizes range from 10,000 sq. ft. to 15,000 sq. ft. and are newly constructed or about 10-15 years-old. Rents here are dropping at the moment, probably due to the decreasing budgets of the tenants, however, the community is still in high demand. A 4-5 bedroom villa rent is about AED275k to 325k. Sales activity remains a little stagnant though. Barsha south, the third segment, is packed with a number of newly built large plot-sized villas with 4-6 bedrooms. This community is still not high in demand and the rents are dropping because of the overall downfall in demand.

Editor’s pick The luxe factor When decorative furniture items resemble elements of jewellery, we are sold. Mari Ianiq, the premium furniture brand inspired by the Art Deco era, is renowned for stunning pieces adorned with Swarovski crystals, or Zoffany (a premium fabric and wallpaper design company). The latest collection from the brand, the Flower Power line, comprises four-leaf clover inspired furnishings featuring coffee tables, stools, and ottomans in typical London colours - muted tones of grey and beige. But it’s the pairing of each item with black, gold or silver surfaces which allows it to ooze sophistication. Elegance meets functionality with this line inspired by couture fashion and jewellery, and it can be seen in pieces like this stand – complete with engravings and mother of pearl – which instantly adds a glamorous touch to any space. Plus, as the Irish believe, four-leaf clovers are a symbol of luck, so we don’t mind adding this piece to our space to get even a smidgen of it.
