For most first-time buyers, the prospect of decorating and accessorising a new property is daunting – but not for Anam Siddiqui. She is the senior interior designer of Perfect Proportions, an interior design and refurbishment company that has been in her family for three generations. For Anam, buying a property offered the chance to let her imagination run wild. And with the new addition of Pomeranian puppy Lana six months ago, her home is complete. “I bought the flat so I could do anything I wanted to it,” she says with a smile as I ogle the bright décor. Hand-painted peacocks, a stag’s head with neon antlers, adorable bubblegum-pink crockery… Anam has created one beautiful bachelorette pad. When she moved in a year ago, she wasted no time in making her mark: “The layout is great, with two en suite bedrooms and a cosy living room, but I knocked through

the maid’s quarters to create a bigger bathroom and a handy storage area.” “If I’d been renting I wouldn’t have been able to hang the really elaborate wallpaper. It probably cost me the most out of everything I did to the flat! I saw it at an exhibition in London, and had it flown from the UK to Dubai – I would never have done that for a rented property!” Of course, Anam is no stranger to turning a blank canvas into a characterful, welcoming space. Working on newly-built villas, she’s designed homes right from their shell-and-core beginnings, working with MEP contractors and producing 3D designs with Perfect Proportions’ graphic designers. “My grandfather started the company in London, converting serviced apartments, and then my mother got into the interior design side of things. She brought the business to Dubai when she moved out here a few years ago.” Anam studied Interior Architecture at Chelsea College of Art and Design, so taking

‘I bought the flat so I could do whatever I wanted to it...’ on the family business was a natural step. “I moved here when I graduated, and have worked my way up through the company since then. I’ve changed the business model a bit, and now we do both residential and commercial projects – and we have two local hotels under our belt.” One of Anam’s favourite parts of interior design is refurbishing old or damaged items – restoring them to their former glory, or transforming them into

spectacular one-off creations. “I just go to wood shops and random places. We have a furniture factory in Al Quoz, and I like to explore the area, discovering new warehouses and shops. I’ll be on the hunt for something for a client, but I’ll usually come home with something for myself. Like a giant barrel I want to turn into a seat, or some compressed scrap metal I want to turn into table legs…” These JLT interiors are so playful and bright, and everything comes with a dash of humour. A multi-coloured zebra peeks out from a vast canvas on the living room wall, and I’m sure that the neon-antlered stag is grinning from his spot on the

‘Dubai is so vibrant – I wanted to reflect that in my home’ wall… “I found the zebra painting in a warehouse in Al Quoz,” she says. “It was so random and I got it for such a ridiculously low price. I’m not sure if I’d get away with this décor anywhere else in the world. Dubai is so bright and sunny and vibrant, that I wanted to reflect that in my home”. Anam is a self-confessed fabric addict too, and her fabulous array of cushions is just the tip of the iceberg: “We have a whole room dedicated to fabrics at work, and you can hardly get me out of there,” she admits with a grin. So is it possible to get this kind of eclectic look from any of our favourite stores in the mall? “No!” cries Anam, “you really do have to look around. A great place to start is Dubizzle: try your hand at restoring cheap things from there. I think Dubai needs more creative energy – there are some beautiful pieces out here, but the creative side is still growing. Don’t be scared – it’s not as complicated as it seems…”

Jumeirah Lakes Towers has grown significantly over the past few years, transforming from the 'poor cousin' of Dubai Marina (for its lower prices and originally barren landscape) to one of the city's most desirable affordable locations. There are opportunities to rent and buy apartments of all shapes and finishes, although larger layouts (four bedrooms and more) are mostly limited to penthouses. The proximity to Sheikh Zayed Road and Media City have attracted a young crowd. Traffic can be sticky at rush hour, and finding cabs can still be difficult, but as the infrastructure improves getting around will become easier.

As the community has grown, JLT's leisure options have improved: all towers offer the standard gym/swimming pool setup, and the walkways around the lakes are popular with joggers, rollerbladers and dog walkers. There are plenty of private gyms – try Smart Fitness (smartfitness.ae) and Fitness Zone (fitnesszonedubai. com). SCAFA (scafa.ae), the area's very own cooking school, offers courses for would-be chefs and is a fun venue for foody-themed parties. You'll find a beauty spa at every turn here: Natural Spa JLT (naturalspajlt.com) and Armada Spa (armadaspa.com) are favourite local sanctuaries.

Every cluster of towers has at least one minimart – you'll never have to walk further than 10 minutes to pick up the groceries. Larger stores include Spinneys and Carrefour too. Small independent shops are popping up all the time – our favourites include Musician Supply instrument shop (musicianssupplydubai.com) and the fresh flowers at Vintage Bloom (vintage-bloom.com). The same goes for eateries, too: Pizza Express (pizzaexpressuae. com) boasts popular jazz nights, and Asian-fusion eatery Wokyo is one of Dubai's kookier restaurants. The Bonnington Hotel (bonningtontower.com) is a great spot for dinner, too.

You won't find any schools in JLT itself, but the road links to the rest of the city means that all the popular options shouldn't be more than a 20-minute drive away. There are, however, plenty of nurseries within the area – many of them small, independentlyrun institutions. Look out for Mosaic (mosaicnursery.com), which focuses on the Creative Curriculum. Rainbow Valley Nursery (rainbowvalleynursery. com) takes children from three months old, and is based on the British EYFS Curriculum. Four 2 Four Nursery (four2fourcare. com) uses the EYFS Curriculum, and takes children from four months to four years old.

UAE's central bank has announced its intent to implement a mortgage cap. To understand the impact of this, imagine that a mortgage cap was not implemented. After a 60% drop in 2008, property prices started rising again in 2012. The price rise was 23% and kept growing this year by 21%. Expo 2020 is being announced in November. If Dubai wins, the benefits will be exponential. 271,000 new jobs will be created between 2016 and 2019. The net effect will be a 0.5% growth in the city's economy every year until 2019, and a 2% growth in 2020. Hosting the exhibition would require a $7 billion infrastructure investment, including $1.5 billion for an extension of the metro. The exhibition, housed at a $4.3 million purpose-built facility in the southern part of the city, will attract 25 million visitors. 45,000

new hotel rooms will be needed for the event, increasing supply by about 6.4% every year until 2020 at a cost of more than AED31 billion. Visitors' exhibition-related spending between 2015 and 2020 is expected to be in the region of $25 billion. Emirates Airlines expects to fly in 70 million people in its planes during this period. It will have expanded its fleet capacity to 250 wide-body aircraft, making it the largest airline in the world. The expo will also spur new business setups. This will help the lagging commercial property market pick up pace. There is clear evidence of this happening already. Occupancy rates in Jumeirah Lake Towers have risen by an unprecedented 50% so far this year. The occupancy rate in the city has risen at a healthy 15% and is expected to get better.

Dubai’s economy grew by 3.3% in 2011, 4.4% in 2012, and is expected to show another healthy growth figure in 2013. The largest contributors of this growth were retail and manufacturing sectors, which added 1.3% and 0.7%. All indicators were pointing towards another surge in property prices in 2014, which could take them back to 2008 peak prices. This would have left the real-estate market highly susceptible to an abrupt correction and possibly a crash. A crash would leave the economy in a precarious situation since the debt levels are still high. The mortgage cap will help take some of the steam out of the market. ARTE, or The Artisans of the Emirates, is an organisation that champions local crafters and artists – and its bimonthly markets are brimming with unique handmade goods. From painters to candlemakers, embroiderers to soapers, the UAE boasts a surprisingly prolific community of artisans from all over the world. The markets – at Festival City Mall and Times Square Center – bring together crafters from Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and Ras al Khaimah, to network and sell their creations. It’s an energetic, sociable environment in which to hunt out new treasures for your home – with the added pleasure of meeting the people who created them. ARTE was founded in 2005 by Miriam Walsh and Paul Townsend – both of whom are budding artisans. The markets started

For unique interior décor and gifts with personality, look to Dubai’s ARTE Markets, where the UAE’s finest crafters converge… with 35 vendors per month, but have grown to a whopping 280 vendors – and counting. The line-up at each market changes each month, and Miriam and Paul now have 1,000 different artisans on their books, who show and sell their work at the markets. For Miriam, a felt maker, authenticity is key: “We set the conditions of Handmade in the UAE because we wanted to exclude unnecessary competition from imported items made in areas where labour is cheaper.” The skill – and love – that goes into each item is clear, and the artisans’ stories of how they discovered their craft are fascinating. “The reaction from the public has been huge,” says Miriam. “I guess they’re surprised to see such a thriving set of stalls. There’s a continuous flow of new artisans signing up, and an increasing amount of customers visiting the artisans on a regular basis. “The products sold at ARTE are unique, well made, original, and beautiful. They are exciting, handmade and made with love. We are proud of the work that we do managing ARTE, and, as artisans ourselves we are also proud of the products that we make.”

“I launched Palm Lights in summer this year, but I have been researching candles for a while. I wanted to make something eco-friendly – I’m always recycling, that is part of who I am. Then I found out about palm wax – it is extracted from palm oil without chemicals, and it has a unique crystalline finish when it sets. No two candles are ever the same – I fell in love with it when I found it! It started as a hobby, but then I had so many pieces that I began to sell them – I’ve been at ARTE for almost three years. We learned how to do the embroidery at school and with our mums – our homes and dresses were all decorated with it. I have taken traditional designs and tried to make them more modern – something that you can put into your home. It is heavy in colour and stitches, so a cushion cover will take me about five days to complete. Hand-made soap – Elena Graydon “My background is in cosmetology, and I started experimenting with soap nut berries when we discovered we were allergic to washing powder. I'm from a small village in Moldova – we use herbs for teas and soaps. My parents keep bees, and the honey I use in the soaps are from them. I love colour – that’s why my soaps are so bright. I use cosmetic and natural colours – you’d be surprised how you can use everyday ingredients to colour and scent soap. I have worked on the designs and the patterns since then. When I moved here in 2011 I was looking for a job, and I stumbled across ARTE, so I thought I’d give it a try. I’ve been doing the markets for three years now. You get so many different people of so many different nationalities. I have learnt to make my creations better for customers. I am inspired by both Indian and Arabic designs I see around me – for example, my idea of painting doors came after I visited Sheikh Zayed Mosque. I think I get my creativity from my mother. I work fulltime for a company in Sharjah, but I work right next to the office so that saves time, as I do the paintings in the evenings. When it comes to delectable Chinese cuisine, Hakkasan Dubai comes up trumps – here’s how to recreate some of its most popular dishes at home

With its plush sofas, palm-fringed walkways and Chinese-style carved wooden screens, the terrace of Hakkasan Dubai feels worlds away from its DIFC location. This is a slice of relaxed, al fresco Asia – albeit with the hum of international conversation and the clink of the odd champagne glass. But what really transports you to the Far East is senior sous chef Toh Chye Siong’s spread of delectable Chinese dishes. Drawing on years of experience, he’s created a menu – more of a book, really – that boasts over 70 selections, with seasonal variations too. Hakkasan’s

‘signature’ dishes well deserve their status – think plump dim sum, with succulent crab, chicken and prawn stuffings, and a crispy duck and cress salad tossed with sweet soy dressing. And although you won’t find any Middle Eastern-Asian fusion cuisine here, most ingredients are locally-sourced, including the likes of steamed red snapper with assam sauce. 1. For the Marmite sauce, mix all the ingredients together in a pan and cook slowly until boiling. Leave to cool. 2. Coat the fish with potato starch, and set aside. 3. In a deep fryer, heat the oil to 70째C and cook the fish until crispy. 4. Pan-fry the chilis and spring onion in a little oil, then add 2 tablespoons of Marmite sauce. Drain the fried fish, and mix with the sauce in the pan. 5. Serve immediately, on a bed of grapefruit.
