There’s no way a piece from Iittala’s enchanting new collection, Taika (which means magic in Finnish), will get overlooked at your next dinner party. It’s the sort of table-and serve-ware that makes you reminisce fairytales and your childhood. The collection’s artwork, created by Klaus Haapaniemi, has been inspired by Finnish folklore, with a touch of Slavic and Japanese influences. Forest-like creatures adorn blue, red, and white ceramics and textiles, adding colour and elegance to a table setting. These make great gifts for the festive season too. Available at Jashanmal Department stores.

magine waking up to a view of the putting green, and sipping tea in the backyard, as you breathe in the fresh air. That’s what Nikita, one of the daughter-in laws of the Arora household, experiences on a daily basis. The six-bedroom villa she resides in with her husband Raghav (founder of Architectural Corner and Director of the DRA Group) and her in-laws, boasts unrivalled views of the Dubai skyline and golf course, and has been home to the family for the last eleven years. Nikita moved in just a year ago, after getting married, and tells us that the structure was designed by none other than her husband. “The inspiration was a blend of traditional and modern features,” says Raghav. “We have a central courtyard, which is a common feature in Indian and Arabian architecture, and this blends in with a contemporary feel around the courtyard. The concept also reflects our personality and character as a family. We are traditional at heart, but have a more contemporary outlook to life.” The Emirates Hills locality is one the family appreciates living in, as they often find themselves either hosting, and partaking in, lunches and dinners on a regular basis with the neighbours. Neutral undertones were chosen for the interiors, with glass domes on the
ceilings to predominantly let sunlight shine through. “Being a large house it requires a lot of light to keep the space balanced. The dome offers a sight of the sky, and this provides a dynamic view whenever you look up,” he says. The all-beige living and dining rooms were designed in a way to layer colours over it easily, creating an impact. It works well with earthy tones like red, gold, and orange, seen in sculptures and artifacts around the house. The Aroras possess a fervent love for art, with the space being filled with work from all over the world. Paintings and sculptures from Capri and San Francisco were recently picked up during family travels. These hang high on the walls that surround the courtyard, in the foyer, dining room, and stairway. Artifacts from Ladro and Baccarat are noticeable on the coffee table, and so are Swarovski collectors’ items displayed neatly in glass showcases. “In the mid 90’s we built the Swarovski head office in Dubai. That

gave us the chance to meet the founders, who are good friends till today, and ever since then we have grown our interest in crystal items,” he says.
The dome offers a sight of the sky, and this provides a dynamic view There isn’t one recurring influence, as the family’s contemporary style blends Indian and Arabian themes seamlessly. Nikita’s tour begins with the basement, where they usually host loud and more elaborate parties for youngsters. It offers a relaxed vibe, with a billiards table, bar and lounge area. The living rooms beige

furnishings and striking chandelier from Fendi Casa fill up the space, while the floor-to-ceiling windows expose views of the backyard and green surroundings. Amongst the artwork, crystals, and a unique chess set with exotic stones and metals, is an interesting sculpture called Colgo la luna grande by Giacinto Bosco, which now sits in the courtyard. “We came across this store in Capri and loved the feel of this sculpture. I don’t really know what it means, but I just feel it has a very positive vibe which is nice to be around,” says Raghav. When the family isn’t out and about for events, designing structures for Emirates Hills owners – amongst many others – or entertaining at home, they gather in the recently renovated lounge and kitchen, which now features couches from Natuzzi, and state-of-the-art Miele appliances. The family often host visiting family and friends, housing them in the traditional-style guest bedrooms on the ground floor, decorated with rich maroons and gold. The suites look out to the golf course, and were all designed with comfort being paramount. While the villa seems like it’s complete, Raghav tells us he’d like to add a lounge to the roof, along with a garden. “The roof has the best views of the city and we need to make more use of it,” he tells us. We think a natural green touch to emphasize a space, is always a good idea.

THE HOWTO GUIDE Nifty dĂŠcor ideas to put your domestic skills to the test
37 NOVEMBER 2015 | www.bhomes.com
Better Homes Magazine | HOME
B UI L D A T EEPEE Step 1: Cut a large length of 3/8 inch sisal rope, and burn the end. Step 2: Drill a 5-inch hole in the Àrst poplar dowel (1¾*6 inches). Step 3: String rope through the poplar dowel hole, and tie a knot around it. Step 4: Make a faux teepee with your poles to see how they need to lay out, to be stable. Using four poles - have the front wider and the back of the teepee narrower. Step 5: Feed the rope through the second dowel, then wrap it around a couple of times, going over various directions to stabilise it. Step 6: Add the third dowel to Ànd out where to place it, drill the hole, insert the rope, and wrap around. Repeat with the fourth dowel, and tie around the teepee several times.
CREAT E A ROP E MIRROR Step 1: Cut a 1-3 metre thick rope – avoid having the ends fray out by taping it – then cut in the middle, so both ends stay tight.
Step 7: Open your drop cloth horizontally and Ànd the middle. Start draping it from the back of the teepee, and secure at the top where the poles meet with one screw. Drill a hole through the pole, add a washer to the screw, making sure to insert it through both fabric and the pole. Continue draping around the sides as it falls naturally, tucking excess at the Áoor under, trying to keep it tight and uniform where the poles meet. Adjust the poles slightly if needed, and then use a screw on each side - same method to secure the fabric. Roll or cut the excess fabric on the inside.
Step 2: Glue the rope onto the edge of the mirror, using a hot glue gun. Make sure to apply substantial amount of glue but careful not to saturate any area more than the others. Step 3: Measure out how long you want the mirror to hang, and cut the rope at the length desired. Step 4: Make a Àrm knot on either ends of the rope, and secure each side with glue. Step 5: Place heavy-duty mounting tape all along the back of the mirror for added support. Hang up and place a hoop hook just underneath the mirror for extra support. D I P - DY E CA NDL ES Step 1: Add wax beads to a double boiler, or slow cooker with a nonstick insert, Àlling quarter of the way. Melt wax, adding more chips gradually, to make the wax line on the candle higher. Step 2: Shave bits of a quarter of a crayon into the wax, and stir to blend. Let the bubbles settle, and dip a taper candle into the wax to test the colour (once the beeswax dries, it can be broken off, so you can use the taper for the next batch). Add more shavings to make the colour darker. Remove the wax from the heat and set aside. Step 3: Dip the base of one pillar candle to the desired height. Hold candle in melted wax for Àve to ten seconds; remove, and set candle – tinted end down – on a plate or baking sheet to dry.
PICK FA BR I CS FOR DRAPES Step 1: Look and touch! If the fabric has a heavy, thick appearance and texture, it’s suitable for a lavish home, as it’s more likely to hold and Áow nicely. The shinier the fabric, the more likely it will give off a luxury feel. Opt for a matt fabric if your room is more modern, than classical. Pick linen for a contemporary look, and silk-woven instead of pure silk. Step 2: If your room has a lot of sunlight, go for less bright colours, as they will fade overtime. This has nothing to do with the quality; it’s just
an inevitable process due to sun exposure. If you need to sleep in total darkness, go for a thicker fabric, and make sure you have blackout on the back to block any light.
Step 4: Choose patterns that suit your room. If you have low ceilings, opt for designs that are vertical, to give height to the space. The beauty about bespoke drapes is that you are able to mix and match to see what suits your room the most. Simple is always better. The wide variety of patterns is confusing, but it ultimately boils down to a few important questions - is the room formal or relaxed, classic and elegant, or casual and cosy, modern and minimalist, or retro-styled? If you have
Step 3: Fire retardant fabrics seem to be the latest trend, where people are choosing safety over beauty. It’s important to note the difference between Àreproof and Àre retardant. The former will catch Àre, but drop and crumble instantly. These aren’t very common in households, and are mostly available in plain colors.
39 NOVEMBER 2015 | www.bhomes.com
strong colours dominating your room, steer away from bold patterns, as this will be visually uneasy especially if you have patterned wallpaper, furniture or bedding. For a subtle touch of vibrancy in light, airy rooms, go for small, neutral prints, like dots or Áorals. Solid arabesque shapes suit a more traditional interior, while contemporary patterns like stripes, and geometric shapes, bring a modern feel to a space. Instructions supplied by Sedar.

CONSTRUCT A T E R RA RIU M Step 1: Choose the type of terrarium you desire – closed or open – and pick your glass bowl accordingly. Step 2: For closed terrariums, add a thin layer of crushed charcoal on the bottom, to keep the soil fresh. Place rocks for an open one. Step 3: Add a layer of sand across the top of the rocks and charcoal. Step 4: Top with soil, making sure to create holes large enough for the roots
of each plant. Uneven layers of sand and soil can make the terrarium look great, however pay close attention to the levels around the edges as this is what you will see from outside the terrarium. Steps 1-3 should equal about one-third the height of your selected container with the soil layer being the thickest. Step 4: Remove your plants from its original container, and brush off the loose soil around the roots. Step 5: Insert the plants into the soil

holes in the glass bowl, from largest to smallest, and pack lightly all around. Don’t overplant, and keep space for moss, small figurines, and stones. Step 6: Decorate carefully with toys, moss, and decorative elements. Step 7: To maintain your terrarium, water the plants, avoiding the moss, one to two times per week. The soil should remain barely moist for closed terrariums. Prune dead foliage as and when required, and keep in natural, indirect light.

aterine’s job as interior designer, and creative partner of KST Interiors, is to transform a space from its bare bones, to a home for clients. So it was refreshing for her to be on the other side for once. “This time we could do what we wanted,” she says with delight. “I wanted to move away from the dark, heavy timber that is very prominent in Dubai, as we had these colours in our previous villa.” The three-bedroom villa in Al Waha, Dubailand, is where her husband, threemonth old baby boy, and two K9 rescue dogs reside. “Our typical style is clean and modern, with lots of textures and interesting fabrics,” says Katherine. Bits of England and Dubai were integrated into the design, and lightwood was combined with rustic textures. These
are also noticeable in the retro-looking leather couch in the lounge area, near the iconic red London telephone booth. A masculine vibe is prevalent in the master bedroom with a luggage-image wallpaper, leather headboard bed from Pottery Barn, and wooden trunks. A mix of textures – from the rug to the drapes – can be seen here, and while the furniture is dark, sunlight Áoods the room through elegant Venetian blinds from Sedar. “The intention was to create something more daring than a neutralcoloured villa, and since we like to think outside the box, we played around with leathers, felts and linens,” she says. The fun element was a vital factor for this home, where boundaries were pushed to the limit. “This is going to be our villa for a while so it’s been worth the investment. Wallcoverings were

The One Fusion, Marina Home, and Pinkies, are amongst the many furniture stores they prefer shopping at too. Emirates Living is one of the most popular gated residential areas in Dubai. Residential options are aplenty, and available in clusters, so you can choose between townhouses, and standalone villas. The entire development is set amidst lush green surroundings that offer a sense of calm, peace and serenity. All properties are freehold accommodations so you can invest in the one you desire. What’s great about the vicinity is that it’s just a few minutes drive from business districts like Dubai Media City, Dubai Internet City, and Tecom. Furthermore, its location across Dubai Marina, and direct access to Al Khail Road makes it an enticing one too. Apart from the villas, the community

has tons of facilities for its residents. The entire area has been designed keeping children and families in mind, so parks, lakes and walkways, are an integral part of the plan. There are pleasant streetscapes and landscaped gardens that are perfect for evening walks. You can also Ànd swimming pools, nurseries, shopping centers, cafés, restaurants, and mosques, within the boundaries of the Emirates Living community. The world-class Montgomerie 18-hole Championship Golf Course, created by master architect Desmond Muirhead and seven-time European Order of Merit winner, Colin Montgomerie, makes living in Emirates Hills a golfer’s paradise too.
Better Homes Magazine | BETTER LIVING The community is also home to Emirates Hills villas, some of which face the golf course, and are designed according to the owners liking. There are Àve main residential projects in this community. First is the Signature Hills where each house has been constructed as per explicit speciÀcations of the buyer. The Meadows, adjacent to the Emirates Golf Club, offers spacious villas with an Arabian-style setting. Its signature is the lush greenery that pervades throughout the area. Those looking for a big family villa can opt for The Lakes, or Hattan - a residential project that is an extension of The Lakes, with each villa completely detached from the others,
providing complete privacy. Each unit also sports a spectacular view of the Emirates Golf Club, and most homes offer spacious Áoor plans, and spectacular views of lakes. It is situated between the Montgomery at Emirates Hills and the Emirates Golf Club. The Springs offers well-maintained villas and townhouses with top facilities and amenities. The average size for 3 bedroom villas in The Springs is around 2,450-3,500 square feet, and villa types range from 4-1 (with 1 being the largest type villa available). The average selling price for these villas starts from Dhs1.7 to Dhs3.5 million. In Meadows, the size ranges from 3,500-5,000 square feet, and retails from Dhs3.9 to 7 million.

WHICH SCHOOL?
Better Homes magazine talks to Principal Pratibha R ao of Dubai International Academy, to find out the offerings at this school in Emirates Hills SHORTEN THE SCHOOL RUN Three great homes within 15 minutes drive of DIA
The Lakes Emirates Living Mohammea Khalid Khan (Ref No. VI154524)
What sets your educational institution apar t from others in the city? Since its inception in 2005 Dubai International Academy has grown from 500 students to over 2,000. Today it is the school of choice for parents looking for a holistic, rigorous, international education for their children. The mix of nationalities among the students, and teachers, ensures that children have a truly multicultural experience. As an IB continuum school, we exclusively offer only IB programmes from KG through to Year 13. There is a good balance of academics and extra-curricular activities as well.
Why should a parent enroll their child at your school? The personalised approach to teaching, learning, and a wide range of subject choices in MYP (Middle Years Programme) and the DP (Diploma Programme) has made DIA an attractive choice for students and parents. Children love coming to school and feel part of a secure, well-knit community. They also enjoy an excellent rapport with teachers who are approachable and caring at all times.
Apar t from academics, what else does the school focus heavily on? We believe in holistic education. There is a strong sports programme with opportunities for participation in inter-

school competitions. Platforms are also available for student leadership through Model United Nations, Student Council, Prefects, the House system, and a variety of student-led projects.
Does the school offer anything else in particular? We are a BYOD institution. Students bring their own devices, and technology is integrated into lessons. There is a well-established Gifted and Talented programme in secondary school, which is now being extended into the primary section. Additionally, we have a robust mother tongue programme with nine languages being taught.

. Moving to a new city can be scary, especially for a first time parent. The good news is that we’re all in a very similar situation here in the UAE. A great place to start is Facebook – there are tons of active expat parenting groups where you can connect with others, ask for recommendations, and arrange coffee mornings and play-dates. A few of my favourites include British Mums Dubai, Mums & Bumps Dubai, and Love Parenting UAE Support Group. These groups are also fantastic places to hear about parenting and baby classes you might like to attend. It

Better Homes Magazine | BETTER LIVING serves as a great source for your nanny search, and many fellow parents post recommendations of nannies they know who are looking for a job (i.e. families that are leaving, and so they are helping their nanny find a new family). A positive nanny recommendation from a fellow parent is worth its weight in gold! Abbey Michelle
. First of all, it’s important to consider the location – it should not be far away from your work. In order to avoid traffic issues, the distance between your home and work is very crucial. Moreover, take your child’s school into consideration as well. Despite most schools having lift service, it would be strongly recommended to choose an adequate location close by for convenience. You also need to consider the facilities and activities within the vicinity. At the moment, Business Bay is a very strategic location, offering a family friendly environment with many bus stations, outdoor and indoor kids play areas, skating zones, a jogging track, small park, and an avenue with more than 50 shops on your door steps.
Also consider your hobbies and social activities. For people who cannot stay away from the sea and sandy beaches, JBR and Dubai Marina are great areas to live in. Families in need of privacy and space can pick villas within various communities in Dubai. Wael Faidi.
. Living in a villa requires a great amount of focus on a slightly different maintenance checklist, as compared to living in an apartment. A few basic points to keep in mind include simple things that need to be done regularly, to avoid any major, experience maintenance issues. It is also important to check the condition of the water tank as, unlike highrise apartment buildings where the tank is maintained by the building management, you will need to monitor the condition of the tank yourself. We recommend water tank cleaning twice annually. Air-conditioning, plumbing and electrical services need to be availed of regularly, alongside regular checking for any faults or abnormalities. Gaps in windows and doors need to be sealed, as insects and cats find their way inside villas quite easily. As a follow up to that, pest control should be conducted on a timely basis as well. Lastly, in order to prevent dust and dirt from entering your home, place good quality, heavy, and coarse doormats outside your main entrance. This keeps you from cleaning up constantly as well.

LOTUSGRILL SMOKELESS CHARCOAL BBQ WITH HOOD While disposable BBQ kits works just Àne for a picnic in the park, we can all agree its look isn’t the most glamorous for an alfresco affair. This handy gadget available in a wide array of colours is just the right size to lug around, or use in an apartment balcony as well.
What we like? Using the
the Àrst time around. After using it a couple of times, and getting a hang of it, we mastered the fan speed by adjusting it accordingly. The highly recommended hood allows meat and veggies to be cooked perfectly, keeping all the heat inside. Plus, the thermostat attached keeps you from opening it multiple times, and losing heat in the
battery-operated grill is fairly simple; all you have to do is chuck the charcoal on to it, insert the liquid or gel to heat it up, place the basket over the Áame, and turn on the speed fan to let air and heat circulate. While cooking chicken, we found that the exterior didn’t heat up, however the food did burn quickly
CHAR-BROIL BBQ GAS 5 -BURNER GRILL This is the ultimate man’s gadget, perfect for a weekend BBQ with a large group, and those who have ample backyard space. The robust gas grill with stainless steel burners and porcelain-coated cast iron grates – for hasslefree cleaning – may look like the most complicated BBQ set ever, however you can use it with just the push of button.
What we like? You don’t have to light up the coal, or wait long for it to heat up, all it takes is a few minutes and you’re good to go. We were keen to get our ribeye steak done to the perfect mediumrare temperature, and were thoroughly excited with the outcome - thanks to the lid-mounted gauge which let
us monitor the temperature inside. Our foiled sweet potatoes and garlic bread were kept on the warming rack/side burner, making it a great element for those who want to prepare a full meal at once.
What we didn’t like? The gadget isn’t portable, making it hard to get accustomed to any other grills after using this sturdy, family-sized one.

process. The grill exterior is easy to wipe down, while the basket is dishwasher-safe.
What we didn’t like? The food has to be attended to at all times, in order for it to be cooked to perfection. To buy: Dhs299 for the grill, and Dhs169 for the hood at jumbo.ae.
