WELCOME TO THE ISSUE October is one of my favourite months. You can sense the change of weather, people are less furious when driving around town - due to a drop in humidity levels - and outdoor terraces at cafés and restaurants beckon. It’s the start of something new. Which is why our little makeover of Better Homes Magazine couldn’t be timed any better.

Managing Director Victoria Thatcher Editorial Director John Thatcher

This issue answers ample home décor queries, and also serves to help those new to the city, with our newly-formed panel of experts. Décor wise, you can redecorate your bedroom to give it a bohemian edge (page 16) or perhaps transform it one room at a time (page 22). H

anna Karonen, CEO and Interior Designer at Simply Design Interiors, is deÀnitely a pure representation of a Scandinavian woman. The off-white culottes and crisp white shirt she slipped into – complemented by turquoise Hermes jewellery – Àt perfectly with the glamorous neutral surroundings. The Polish mother of two, a baby daughter, and six-year old son, lives in a Àvebedroom Palm Jumeirah villa with her husband, which she decorated herself. The couple moved to the city nine years ago, and previously lived in a townhouse at Dubai Marina. “It’s the regular story, Àrst an apartment, then when the kids come around, a villa,” says Hanna. The Palm was their ultimate choice as Hanna found it practical, close to her friends, and some of the city’s Ànest restaurants and cafés. “It’s very practical, quiet, and safe,” she says. They moved into the villa Àve years ago, and have seen multiple décor changes ever since. “The house was purple and turquoise, and had a lot of plates on the wall in the dining room. It wasn’t us at all,” she tells us. The living room, a black, gold and neutral space, is a feast for the eyes – and not in the over-the-top glitz sort of way. Hanna says the city’s love for gold has had a remarkable inÁuence on her personal style and projects. When she moved to the emirate, it was used in abundance, but her style has gradually shifted towards minimalism – a trend she claims is huge this year. Plush cotton white couches sit across from brown leather armchairs from Flamant. Pops of gold are seen in the shelving unit, accessories and (sort of)

“I like mixing it up with The One and Marina Home pieces too. We buy a lot from there and re-upholster or customise them as their price points are very reasonable,” she says. Since Hanna owns an interior company, she Ànds herself getting tons of carpentry, drape blinds, and tailor work done for her own home. All the rugs have a stitched border.

The house was purple and turquoise, and had a lot of plates on the wall. It wasn’t us at all faux-leather wallpaper from Romo. Black lamps, quirky pieces, and a custom-made backdrop offer a striking contrast to the spacious surroundings. A wooden blind-style divider separates the living room, and on the other side of it, closer to the balcony, Hanna sits back to gaze at the skyline and open waters. Shades of grey can be seen in couches that look good enough to sink into. A number of pieces, like the white ottoman in this section, are from Bloomingdale’s Home-Dubai. Hanna counts this store, Flamant, and Nakkash Gallery her go-to stores for furniture and accessories.

The dining space was initially a separate room before the wall was broken down, and Hanna has transformed it from the gaudy purple it was, to a clean, fresh space. Nobilia (Paris) wallpaper, which resembles Van Gogh’s iconic Almond Branches in Bloom painting, covers one dining room wall, while a solid Luce di Luna dining table, paired with dining chairs from Bloomindale’s Home-Dubai, can be found near the massive Marina Homes showcase. The small coffee table beside it is where Hanna can be found on most days, sipping coffee while typing out

On the way out of the dining room, interesting shadow boxes adorn the wall, and Hanna points out they are gemstones from Four Seasons Ramesh Gallery, sourced by an artist from his travels in India. “I love the different galleries here, as they have unique accessories and furniture,” she says. The ivory coloured drawer chest at the entrance, from Nakkash Gallery, is a beautiful piece by itself as well. The entrance, covered with Áoorto-ceiling mirrors, customised seating – with shoe storage below – lamps, and striped wallpaper, brings the previously bare space to life. “It’s the Àrst impression people get,” she says, and it is undoubtedly a great one. When we speak of her son’s bedroom, Hanna tells us she hasn’t revamped it since he was one. “I love baby blue and light colours for children, but black and white is classic,” she tells us. Oscar’s room is as colourful as it gets, with cars, blocks, and toys covering every table surface in the room. The master bedroom offers a slight Scandinavian

touch, with a Hästens bed, which she reveals was extremely comfortable during her pregnancy. The iconic Bourgie lamps are from Kartell, and these sit on large bedside tables packed with reading material. Hanna loves the White Company and Ralph Lauren for bedding, and splurges whenever there’s a sale. One thing she appreciates about living here is the backyard for her children to play in. The little ones swim every morning, or relax on the customised pergola in the garden, designed by Hanna. Their evenings are usually at barbecues or a friend’s place, a stroll away on the beach. Staycations at Atlantis The Palm have also become the norm, every few weekends, as the children love the facilities. As for how long they’d want to live on The Palm, she says they may buy a villa on the island, but are also considering Emirates Hills. We can’t wait to see which direction her décor style will sway in her next home.

Better Homes Magazine | HOW TO

ST YLE A SOFA Step 1: Begin at the corners of the couch, with 22 or 24inch square cushions. Step 2: Layer smaller square pillows in front, in a shade from the same colour family. Step 3: Limit the patterned cushions to just one set. Step 4: Throw in a peculiar shape (circle or rectangle) in the centre. Always remember that odd numbers are appealing. You can mix and match colours, textures, and solids with several coordinating patterns.

ASSEMBLE A DOG BED WIT H A VINTAGE SUITCASE Step 1: Choose an empty suitcase that’s large enough to Àt your pet in comfortably. Step 2: Measure and cut out a large piece of foam to tuck into the suitcase. Add multiple layers for cushion, so that it Àlls the hollow part of the suitcase completely, reaching all the way to the top of it. Step 3: Choose a bright coloured or printed fabric to place over the foam. Cut out a piece, larger than the area of the suitcase, to secure it over the foam. Tuck it in at the edges and sew (optional) to make it resemble a cushion.

MA KE A PILLOW MIST Step 1: Place a funnel in a mini glass bottle which has a nozzle spray. Step 2: Add 20 drops of lavender oil, followed by 15 drops of your favourite essential oil (chamomile is a great option). Step 3: Fill with room temperature distilled water, and shake well before spritzing on your pillow.

THROW THE ULTIMATE ALFRESCO PART Y Step 1: Mismatch dishes. Mix modern gold tableware with authentic china and ornate glassware, or place vintage plates and bowls all over the table. Step 2: Construct a selfserve bar area – on a table or cart towards one corner – to keep you from playing bartender the whole night.

Serve your favourite bevvy in a pitcher or punch bowl, with teacups on the side. If your guests prefer making their own concoctions, lay out the accessories and ingredients in a tray on the side. To keep Áies from Áoating around your drink, turn cupcake cases upside down, pierce a small hole, and carefully place a straw through it. Use

Step 3: Hang fairy lights from trees, to create an ambient, cosy vibe. You could also give centerpieces a miss, and place the lights on the table, around the dishes, for an after-dark dinner party glow. Lanterns also work great.

37 OCTOBER 2015 | www.bhomes.com

Step 4: For a sit-down meal, pass the food around in family style bowls, or serve individual plates – for groups of eight or less. You could hire extra help, so that you aren’t running around attending to requests. A buffet works great for a group of ten or more, but make sure the food remains intact in chafÀng dishes throughout the meal.

Better Homes Magazine | HOW TO

CUSTOMISE A F I BRE DOO R M AT Step 1: Use a ruler to measure out 3½ cm from the edges all around the natural Àbre door mat (50x80cm). Lay masking tape in long strips along the edges of the mat, following the 3½ cm measurement. Press the tape Àrmly down on all four sides to make a border. Step 2: Choose your favourite stencil design, and spray the back of it with adhesive. Set aside to dry. Step 3: Centre the stencil in the space on the mat within the tape border. Tape the corners of the stencil to keep it down. Step 4: Use a foam roller to roll gesso (white paint mixture) on the exposed outer edges of the mat, beyond the taped border.

Step 5: With a stencil and small bristle brush, stipple gesso onto the letters/ design of the stencil. Use the small brush to stipple the narrower parts. Set aside to dry - do not remove the stencil from the mat. Step 6: Take a small portion of chalky Ànish paint and load the washed stencil brush with a moderate amount. Unload on tissue to make sure you don’t have excess paint, as this can escape under the stencil and result in blotchy letters. Stipple over the gesso in an even layer. Step 7: Go back over the letters with the small bristle brush. Make the paint thicker in the middle of the letter strokes and lighter as you go toward the edges to avoid blotching. Repeat until

38 OCTOBER 2015 | www.bhomes.com

you can no longer see white Áecks of gesso all over. Step 8: Use the roller to roll the second colour over, along the edges of the mat. For the second layer, use the stencil brush to cover the little crevices in the natural Àbre. Set aside to dry. Step 9: Remove the stencil and touch up gaps by dabbing paint with the bristle brush. Go over all the painted areas with two coats of matte varnish, staying just on top of the paint. Dry well in between coats, and set aside for 24 hours before using the mat.

he bucolic air and hushed surroundings of the English countryside contrast greatly to the bustling roads of the UAE. Yet Jo Berryman shows us that interiors Àt for a farmhouse can work just about anywhere. Berryman managed to take her interior design business, Matrushka, from the farmside in England to designer emporiums in America, unquestionably retaining her signature style all along. Jo, short for Joanna, is a name people are quite familiar with in Hollywood – she previously modelled for Agent Provocateur, and was formerly married to Coldplay bassist Guy Berryman. Her look is elegant, yet slightly edgy with a dash of rock and roll. How she manages to keep her youthful model looks intact, while being a mother to eight-year old daughter, Nico, and dealing with a full-time business, is an unsolvable mystery. But we know she has a natural talent for design, and an eye for the eclectic, merging the traditional with the contemporary, country charm with urban cool, and period with drama – all seen in her home. “I set up Matrushka in 2009, and it was a labour of love for me,” recalls the glamorous mum. “I had a fashion shop in London called Jezebel, an emporium of designer and antique items. Through Jezebel I developed a love for curating beautiful spaces, an eye for colour, and a

love for reclamation – I guess interiors was the next natural step for me. Clients love this look – we call it poetic chaos.” Her style is perfectly illustrated in The Folly, one of her very Àrst projects, and her own country pile in the Cotswolds. “It is eclectic, there is no other word for it,” she explains. “There is a danger of making farmhouses too twee and ‘done’ – but I’m not a farmer,” she laughs. The Folly is a retreat for Jo, with bright colours and a luxe-boho look. Wooden ceiling beams can be found in the kitchen, combined with old butcher’s blocks, for a rustic touch. To make the space slightly more modern, Jo added in marble countertops, and Philippe Starck stools. The retro elegance is retained with lush velvet ChesterÀeld sofas and ethnic cushions, which sit opposite an open stone Àreplace, and slate hearth in the quirky yet comfy living room. When she isn’t living at The Folly, she leases it so that people can experience the cosy feel and vibe it offers.

Jo has transformed plenty of Victorian townhouses, gothic lodges, bachelor pads, and pied-à-terre’s in London, infusing the homes with retro glamour, period drama and urban bachelor-chic. Last year saw her launch an exclusive collection with HD Buttercup, a designer

For residents in Oceana, Tiara, and Marina Residences, the shops may seem like a short drive away, but it’s the price to pay for the tranquillity on the island, which is comparable to none. Plus, the added advantage of a private beach makes residing here even more

enticing. RTA taxis can be found at all times, and so can public buses. Couples and singles usually opt for the seaside apartments, while families favour villas and townhouses (Marina Residences). Apartments lease from Dhs120,000, and sell from Dhs1.6 million. The further along the frond you go, the higher the villa price, as the sea widens. There are over 150 villas on each frond, with two types available – Garden Homes and Signature villas. On Frond N, homeowners can buy plots and customise their own villa. Plots are Dhs2 million lower than a Ànished villa, and lease from Dhs460,000. To find out more, contact Elen Manukyan on 04 409 0998, or visit Better Homes JBR office.

“We moved from JBR just before they started digging up the roads for the tramline, and were one of the Àrst to move to Golden Mile. There are lots of restaurants here, and we have a membership at Riva Beach Resort, plus a running track outside. We love the Palm because it’s very convenient and we feel so settled here. I have lived in Dubai for 11 years and moved ten times, so it was nice to buy our Àrst marital home. At the end of 2016 we’ll move elsewhere on the Palm - to an apartment at Viceroy on Crescent Road, which we have purchased. We’re really excited.”

WHICH SCHOOL?

Better Homes Magazine heads to Barsha South, home to Foremarke School, where we meet Headmaster Alistair Bond SHORTEN THE SCHOOL RUN Three great homes within 15 minutes drive of Foremarke

Jumeirah Village Circle Emirates Living Partha Reddy (Ref No. AP335147)

What sets Foremarke apar t from other schools in the city? The British preparatory school, until Upper School (Year 5 and 6), seats no more than sixteen children in each class, to enable the teachers to focus on the needs of the individual. Each child is unique and has their own pace of development, so they get the teacher’s undivided attention constantly, which helps them excel academically, physically and socially.

Why should a parent enroll their child at your school? Foremarke aims to produce happy, well rounded, grounded young people who possess a thirst for learning; together with the confidence and skills needed to successfully transition to the senior school of their choice and life beyond. It has also been recently accredited by IAPS, and has received the great honour of becoming one of only two IAPS World Hub Schools.

Apar t from academics, what else does the school focus heavily on? Creative arts, sports, music, and etiquette. When children are encouraged to use their creativity and develop their artistic skills, they excel in their development and growth. Teaching

children the importance of manners, courtesy and tolerance, assist the pupils to value themselves, and others around them. Foremarke pupils develop an intuitive moral code that guides them not only in the school environment, but also for the rest of their lives.

Does the school offer anything else in particular? Apart from the wide array of activities and sports facilities, Foremarke holds great importance in healthy eating and therefore strives to provide the very best in food services to its pupils. Celebrity chef Gary Rhodes has played an integral part in creating healthy menus and setting a trend of wholesome eating since the inception of the school. While he has created the menus, a third party prepares and cooks the meals.

Ask the EXPERTS New to the city? Our skilled panel is here to solve some of your queries D u b a i B r i t i s h Sc h o o l

. Our school, Dubai British School Jumeirah Park (DBSJP) is brand new, from the building, to the teachers, staff, and students, so we empathise with children who arrive on the first day not knowing anybody or where to go. The good news is that feeling does not last for long. Our highly skilled and friendly teachers are geared up, and ready to welcome new children into their class; complete with a named locker in the art classrooms. Meanwhile, parents will be offered a chance to view the magnificent facilities of the school, and be given opportunities to ask those last minute, vital questions. Children will be taking part in a range of activities to help build their social confidence and integration skills. DBSJP highly values critical-skills, with collaboration between the pupils being one of the core purposes for all the teaching staff. Friendship groups will quickly be established, with all new pupils being ‘buddied’ up with a likeminded peer. As the day progresses the children will become more familiar with the systems and routines - all of which are carefully supported by the teachers and learning assistants. Every aspect of the school is prepared to ensure that new students are excited and motivated by their learning environment, so that they count the seconds until they return the following day. Michael Stuart

. I’m assuming you do not have sprinklers installed, in which case it would be worth investing in a soaker hose, which leaks water through its

porous surface, and is set on a timer. This keep soil hydrated, without wastage of water, proving to be an environmentally friendly system. Now you can depart carefree, and return back to find it the way you left it. Sean Blaikie

. A particular misconception is that pest control will eradicate the pests for good. To ensure it is effective, it is important to identify the reason the pests are present, and to deal with the source first, before bringing in help to rid the premise of existing pests. It can often come down to simple measures; in this case checking to see if there’s a crack or opening in any part of your home - very commonly a kitchen window, front door or French door from where the pests enter and seal themselves shut. Make sure no food is kept out, and dry foods are stored in airtight containers. Stagnant water can also be a problematic source, in vases for instance. Once you find the source, put an end to it and treat your space to rid those pesky crawlers. Sean Blaikie

THE EXPERTS

. Before you embark on your journey, understand the regulatory norms for home financing. There are certain regulations that could affect your decision. If you are a first time property buyer, and taking out a home finance, the maximum finance to value (FTV) an expatriate could avail is 75% for a property which is less than AED5 million, and 65% FTV in case the price is greater than the same amount. A minimum of 25% has to be self-funded for the first property, and the minimum deposit for the second property is 40%. You also need to be cognizant of other charges applicable in registering the property at the statutory body, such as the 4% registration charges on the price of the property, 0.25% of your loan value, real estate broker charges of 2%, which your property real estate broker would be able to provide. There are various ways you could approach this: 1. Visit comparable finance websites like Souq Al Mal, or Compareit4me. These will give you a fair idea of the offers prevalent in the market.

MICHAEL S T E WA R T Deputy Head of Primary, Dubai British School Jumeirah Park

PAWA N D H AWA N Head of Home Finance at Noor Bank

2. Approach your current bank, and request a meeting with the mortgage or home finance advisor to have a detailed session. 3. Search for home financing banks and providers, and look at the terms offered by other lenders. After which, contact the brokers. Most have extensive relationships with a wide array of banks, so they would be able to secure the best home finance options. It would be advisable to contact a prominent broker, who could provide you with all the offerings available. 4. Meet with a home finance provider to assess and determine your eligibility. Next, determine what you can afford and get a pre-approval. The majority of the home finance providers offer what is usually known as a pre-approval facility for a nominal fee starting from AED1,000-5,000. The pre-approval is provided after the bank underwrites your application, stating your maximum eligibility, and the number of years you can take finance for. The pre-approval gives you the ability to go out in the market and choose the property of your choice based on your eligibility. Pawan Dhawan

THE AGENT’S VIEW

Aleksandra Majcherek, BH Residential Leasing and Sales Consultant, on the continued attraction of Dubai Marina ...

W h a t m a ke s t h e D u b a i Marina unique as a community? As a resident, Dubai Marina is no ordinary place. I love living on the most luxurious man-made marina in the world and the ‘living by the ocean’ lifestyle that goes with it. I enjoy the convenience of walking along the Marina Walk to meet friends at coffee shops and restaurants rather than having to take my car. Everything is close and accessible thanks to the metro, tram, shopping mall and 15km promenade which doubles as a running track. While Dubai Marina is its own self-contained district, a walk across one of the bridges will take you to JBR with its access to the beach, which in my opinion augments the experience of living in a community.

W h a t t a rg e t m a r ke t d o e s i t g e n e ra l l y a t t ra c t ? Singles, married couples, and families from a broad range of nationalities. Working professionals Ànd the location convenient, as it’s an easy hour from Abu Dhabi, and 20 minutes from Downtown Dubai. And, with accommodation options from studios to 4-bedroom apartments, the market that favours this area remains broad and varied.

A r e t h e r e a n y u n i q u e e ve n t s o n w e e ke n d s t h a t r e s i d e n t s s h o u l d look out for? There is often an informal Friday Market along the Dubai Marina Walk, right by the fountains, where you can buy knickknacks and hand-made items. Weekend mornings, late afternoons and evenings are absolutely bustling with people enjoying a stroll or eating a meal at the broad array of marina-facing restaurants. Children love to play in the fountains, and there are a number of public boat charters and outdoor shisha restaurants which play music. I Ànd it to be such a festive atmosphere that there is little need for any formal, organised events. However, for residents who need more nightlife bustle, they can walk over to JBR for events throughout the year which include the 3D Art Festival, World Music Festival, Dubai Latin Fest or Street Nights supported by food trucks, music, street performances. Then there’s the events provided by hotels there.

W h a t, i n yo u r o p i n i o n , a r e t h e To p T h r e e Tow e r s ? Silverene Tower because it’s located close to the metro and the mall, and thus convenient for residents. The Ànishing and quality of the tower is of

premium quality, and the architecture is contemporary. Units include small 1 bedrooms (600-650 square feet) from AED 95K; large 1 bedrooms (850-950 square feet) starting from AED 120K; small 2 bedrooms (1,090 square feet) from AED 140K, and large 2 bedrooms (1,400 square feet) from AED 165K. Bay central because of its top of the line concierge service; beautiful pool plus the beverage and ice cream bar. Plus its location in the heart of Dubai Marina and walking distance to the beach at JBR is perfect. Units include 1 bedrooms (700-800 square feet) starting from AED 100K, 2 bedrooms (1,000-1,300 square feet) starting from 150K; and 3 bedrooms (1,500-1,680 square feet) from AED 200K. Marina promenade because of its facilities that include squash courts, 2 big pools, the barbeque area and top of the line gym. The quality of the tower is high, the development has spectacular views of the Marina and direct access to Marina Walk. Here you can Ànd 1 bedrooms (900-1,080 square feet) starting from AED 125K, 2 bedrooms (1,270-1,660 square feet) from AED 160K, and 3 bedrooms (1,760-2,100 square feet) starting from AED 220K.

LG Cordzero

Dyson V6 Total Clean

LG CORDZERO A vacuum cleaner is an essential for every household, and while a basic one will do for surface cleaning, the newer types help hit those hard-to-reach corners. LG’s latest release is a cordless canister vacuum, which features a built-in lithium-ion battery PowerPack, providing 200 watts of suction power, and cleaning for up to 40 minutes in regular power mode – handy for swift, daily cleaning.

What we like? Gone are the days when you had to keep plugging it back, if you went too far away from the socket. This cordless, compact vacuum has motorised wheels that automatically follow you, by calculating the distance

with its RoboSense technology – pretty fascinating to watch! Dust and dirt were sucked in efÀciently ï especially tiny dog hairs that were stuck to the couch – and we didn’t have to go over areas repeatedly. Disposal is as easy as it gets, as all debris is compressed and pushed into a plastic bin, which can be emptied out easily.

DYSON V6 TOTAL CLEAN Vacuums have come a long way from the bulky gadgets they used to be. The Dyson V6 would hardly be referred to as one back in the day, as it resembles a snazzy long brush. It boasts a soft roll cleaner head, covered in woven nylon, and this allows debris to get sucked in, while being Àrmly attached to the Áoor. The mini motorised tool can be used to remove pet hairs, and ground-in dirt – especially near the grout.

What we didn’t like? It’s slightly heavy, when and if you do have to lift it. However, we found that we didn’t really need to, plus it probably works as an advantage if you have little ones who love Àddling with gadgets.

What we like? Using the gadget is a breeze, as you can tackle those problematic corners, which collect dust easily. We thought the dust suction was incredible, particularly on rugs, and

since it was cordless we could move up and down the staircase without the hassle of tangled cords. The space-age exterior is quite attractive, making it great for those who want stylishlooking gadgets to suit the home scheme.

What we didn’t like? The charge only lasts for 45 minutes, which isn’t ideal for those with a large home. That said, the technology is genius and perfect for those who prefer quick, thorough cleaning on a daily basis.
