WELCOME As we step into September – what we Dubaians refer to as the exciting part of the year – we gear up for great weather, alfresco gatherings, concerts, and new store collections. Now that the children are back at school, you may have some time to devote towards the overall design of your home, particularly the kitchen, and study or office. Whether you are baffled about kitchenware items, in need of a minor tweak, or major revamp; Keeping up with Kitchens (page 24), and the essentials to stock up on (page 42) will help you get the dream space you desire. Those working remotely can find ways to transform a home office into a motivational zone, with tips from the experts on page 36. Beat the heat by ordering furniture and accessories from the hottest online stores, with the click of a button (page 29), or get your hands dirty with secondhand furniture DIYs (page 38). This month’s Jumeirah villa (page 30), packed with art, and antiques, made us realise minimalist styling isn’t as easy to put together at it may look. As if all this isn’t enough, we’ve got something exciting stirring up for the next issue. So while you are house hunting and taking advantage of the plunge in property prices (Page 47), keep your eyes peeled for our October issue, and grab a copy the minute it hits stands! Happy Reading

ON TRE N D… BRASS ACCENTS There’s something about a brass piece. We can’t pinpoint whether it’s the grandeur of the item, the gold tone, or vintage feel, but when taken the form of a candelabra, and trays on a dinner table, it adds a dash of retro glamour. Mix and match with colours from fruit, food, and flowers.

REN T YOU R FU RN IT U R E IN ST EA D OF B U Y IN G Most expats move into the region with the aim to stay for just a few years. Some are here for short-term projects, while others prefer not to fully decorate, just incase they decide to head back. This is where Indigo Living’s rental solutions are handy. With an expert design team on hand, rental packages to suit varied time frames, budgets, and personal taste, and in-stock selection of inventory to choose from, Indigo Living makes renting furniture for your home as easy as possible. It’s not just ideal for those new to the country though. Investors can furnish their homes to get higher rental returns as well. Each package offers coordinated furniture selection, as well as installation of sound systems, kitchen set-up, and beds – probably the easiest, but most frustrating part to deal with when decorating your home. Choose from three rental packages, to get exactly what you desire:

SHORT TERM ŏ One month lease term. ŏ Complete bedding, linen and kitchenware. ŏ Furniture selection from the best-selling collections in-store.

LONG TERM ŏ 12-24 month contract ŏ Furniture and accessories can be rented individually or as a package. ŏ Consultation services for space planning and design. ŏ Maintenance services during the lease period. ŏ Option to own the furniture at the end of the contract.

SHOW F L AT RENTAL ŏ Minimum three month lease. ŏ Consultation services for space planning and design. ŏ Choice from a collection inspired by latest trends.

STYLE FILES MAHER MOUHAJER , CEO OF MOUHAJER GROUP, REVEALS HIS DESIGN AESTHETICS

My home is in…

Inspiration stems from

Al Manzil District, Downtown Dubai.

I love the area as it’s quiet, and feels like a resort, with great facilities available all around. It’s also a safe vicinity for families with children.

Fairs, exhibitions and places I travel to around the world. Milan Salone Del Mobile Fair is one of the biggest furniture events in the world, and you can find high-end furniture companies, as well as upcoming brands, showcasing innovative design ideas under one roof.

My home can be described as

Favourite hotspots

Practical, trendy and classic. It boasts bright light colours that make it look spacious. We furnished it with leather items, making it easy to constantly clean, since we have two children. The master bedroom is all white, from the walls to the sheets, to give the feeling of a clean hotel room.

I love shopping in Italy, especially during Salone del Mobile and Maison et Objet fairs in Paris. Ethan Allen is also a great furniture store, as it offers extremely high-quality furniture.

A sentimental spot I have a wall at home, adorned with

family photos as decoration – this space truly means a lot to me.

On trend Bright colours and floral patterns are big this season.

Instant fix Good lighting that can relax the eye, yet give the room a lavish atmosphere.

Favourite interior designer Zaha Hadid, as she’s one of the most eminent architects. Her style is boldly contemporary, organic and innovative, as she pushes design through innovative technology and materials, to make it anything but ordinary.

CLE A N L I KE R OOM SERVICE Keep your home as spick and span as they do at hotels

GET A TOUCH OF THE SEASIDE AND HAMPTONS, WITHOUT LEAVING THE COMFORTS OF YOUR HOME

The ideal fabric While it’s convenient to dust with any cleaning cloth you may find, it’s essential to use microfiber to get the best results. You could also use a 100% cotton rag, an old pillowcase or t-shirt – slightly dampened – just as long as it is pure cotton. Avoid terrycloth towels and polyester as they tend to create more dust on the items.

Mark the tag When making a king-sized bed, look for the tag to figure out which corner to begin making the bed with. The tag always goes on the bottom, and with most king sheets, they are on the left hand side. You can also mark the inside seams with a fabric marker – denoting left and right – to save a few minutes or so.

Vacuum directions It’s important to vacuum the house before you mop it. To make sure you get every nook and corner, begin over the high traffic areas first, at the furthest part of the room, and then vacuum yourself out so that you clean the most walked-on spots twice.

Indigo Living has put a spin on beach chic, with the infusion of glitz from the Hamptons. Give your home a tranquil, yet elegant, makeover with the launch of the East Coast range, which features furniture pieces in whites and creams – like the overstuffed sofa in a natural fabric (Belgravia 2-seat) – or an upholstered easy chair such as the Versailles high back chair. Complement pale walls with versatile pieces such as the Versailles square upholstered ottoman, which can also be utilised as a coffee table. Accessories in rich cobalt blue and turquoise pair well with taupes, reflecting the sand and sea. Entertain guests indoors at the oak dining table, while still keeping the relaxed beach vibe with furniture made from natural materials. Up the glam factor with glassware, vases, and candleholders, and enjoy every bit of summer within your cool, comfortable and

sophisticated home. It isn’t all about the living room at Indigo Living. Give your bedroom the feel of a seaside hotel with comfortable bedding, and decorative cushions adorned with blue flowers, placed atop crisp white sheets. Those looking for a studded frame should consider the Barkley. Bring together all elements in the bedroom with a statement chair like the Betsy – printed in a deep blue toile – to match the cushions, and continue the theme with the Lounge Chair and Footstool, perfect for those who like to unwind. Bedrooms require a warm glow, to make it feel intimate and cosy, so achieve this look with the Oriental table lamp in traditional Chinese blue and white prints.

KEEPING UP WITH KITCHENS R eva m p o n e o f t h e m o s t l o v e d s p o t s with the latest market trends

W H I T E WAS H An all-white kitchen scheme, like this one from Hacker Kitchens, exudes sophistication, especially if the colour theme runs through the house. The White Miele glass appliances perfectly match the glass doors, and coordinating Silestone quartz worktop, making the beverage cooler and stainless steel Mastercool fridge-freezer the focal points. Those who enjoy cooking and entertaining can install and integrated teppenyaki and induction hob on the island, to give diners a bit of a live-action show while cooking and socialising. SLEEK AND S PAC I O U S The large kitchen island from Consentino’s Silestone series (platinum) is the highlight of this kitchen, integrating an induction hob, and dining spot in one. Kitchen islands are popular with both supplier companies, Consentino and Miele, as they provide function and efficiency, without restricting the kitchen floor plan and schemes. All Silestone features are stain and scratch resistance, proving to be perfect for everyday cooking. Gold and copper tones are in at the moment, so complement shades of grey and silver with ceiling lamps to provide moody lighting, or wood for a texture contrast. SEPTEMBER 2015 | www.bhomes.com

27

C O LO U R CRUSH A shade of pink can create a soft look in the kitchen. However, even though the shade is light, it can seem pretty bold, in contrast to the rest of the house. This Ikea kitchen is apt for small spaces, and open kitchens. As a break from the whole scheme, install a tiled backsplash, near the induction hob area – this makes it easier to clean too. Add greenery and natural elements with wooden cooking utensils, cookbook shelves, and herb pots.

J

ulie Leblan, CEO of mylist.ae (a registry website) is a French woman in every essence. If it wasn’t her application of red lipstick – before her portrait shot – that alerted us, it was most definitely her interiors, boasting minimalist design packed with art and antiques. Julie lives in a four-bedroom villa with her husband, and three kids below the age of six. “A French family recommended this house to us, when we moved here, and I was so pregnant with my second child that I didn’t have time to house hunt,” she tells us. That said, Julie absolutely loves the villa, community and Dubai. “I don’t want to move to any other country, it’s amazing here. My children are exposed to many traditions and cultures, and we are very close to the beach too.” Being close to the sea is important to her, as she grew up in Brittany – a city in the northwest region, boasting the longest coastline in France. The couple moved to Dubai five years ago, as her husband enjoyed his time previously spent in the Middle East for work. Since Julie was pregnant with her second child, and put her career as a finance lawyer behind her, she

Her business and interior choices are intertwined was ready to take a step forward as an entrepreneur. “My husband motivated me to start my own business, and after not being able to find a baby shower registry online, I launched the website,” she says. Julie’s business and home interior choices are intertwined in many ways. Her lounge area boasts two distressed-style wooden armchairs, with Mr. and Mrs. engraved on them. The chairs – from Coochycoo – are one of the bestselling items on her e-shop, especially for newly weds. “I love gifting handpicked pieces, which is why I enjoy working on the website, as the retailers have all been picked by me and my team,” she tells us. Julie’s home isn’t overly colourful, fragile, or decorative, and this is purely because her children are young. “I would love to put in a glass coffee table, and change a lot of furniture, but it’s impossible when you have young ones as they are constantly jumping around and damaging everything,” she says. Upstairs, the children have a playroom, complete with blocks, cars, and a mini kitchen set. We learn that the boys wanted to be together in one room, but her oldest son recently made it clear www.bhomes.com | SEPTEMBER 2015

he wants to be just with his younger brother, and have his bed changed when he arrives back from summer holidays too. While it’s hilarious that six year olds have opinions on their own furniture and space, Julie understands that boys will be boys, and this will reflect in the room design too, after the makeover. A bright blue canopy bed, cradle, and mini white-frame bed, make up the bedroom at the moment, with photos of the three bringing life to the walls. The focal attraction of Julie’s room is an Indian chest of drawers (in silver),

Objects and Elements in Al Quoz to shop for retro-style crates, trays and art. “My husband surprised me with this pop-art piece from there for my 35th birthday, created by an artist called Charles Fazzino. There are only ten pieces available, and we think it’s very child oriented too,” she tells us as she points out to the massive artwork in her living room. Julie plays a ‘Where’s Charlie?’ style game with her children, while admiring the 3D piece for hours, as they point out every minute detail on it. “It’s a fresh way for all of us to look at art.” When the couple moved to the UAE,

I love mixing antiques and art with new furniture pieces which holds little ornaments, and a souvenir from her best friend’s wedding, among many other keepsakes. Julie found the piece at a store in Paris, and swapped the knobs for transparent ones – to get a contemporary touch to suit her home in Paris and co-incidentally in Dubai as well. Above the chest sits a beautiful painting that her husband inherited from his grandmother. “The French painter was well known, as she painted women in nature that were quite provocative,” she says. The two are massive art fanatics, and back in Paris, they visited art galleries and exhibitions every weekend. Here in Dubai, they visit SEPTEMBER 2015 | www.bhomes.com

they brought along all their furniture, due to the quality of the wood pieces picked up in France. The grey couch in the living room is from Marina Home, one of Julie’s favourite stores apart from O de’ Rose, and Ikea. “I love mixing antiques and art with new furniture pieces,” she says. One end of the dining room boasts an open bookcase crammed with French literature, and photo frames, and near it a wall showcases three pieces of wooden art from Mozambique – their honeymoon destination. When it comes to getting handy work sorted for the house, it seems like

Julie has it all under control. A tailor stitched the living room drapes, with fabric she picked up from Satwa. She even got someone to build a dummy wall separator, as she felt the living room was a big wide square. Her kitchen is similar to most utilised ones, with no drastic transformations. Stickers can be seen on the white cupboards – courtesy of the children – along with paintings and photos on the refrigerator. The few prized possessions Julie does have in the kitchen are the china and glassware from France and Prague, which are carefully stacked away. A spacious backyard is nestled right outside the living room, and it’s as green as ever. Julie tells us she is constantly hosting alfresco parties, and sneakily adds that when she’s a bit ticked off with the children, she sends them out to play, to get a bit of rest - they happen to love it though! From the looks of it, she believes she made the right decision moving to the city, even though her friends in Paris don’t understand why she’d leave the life there to move here. “I understand that life there is good, but I feel like it’s much more enjoyable and relaxed here, as I can get live-in help, and don’t have to worry about running around to make it to work in time, or back home for the nanny to leave,” she says as she recalls the perks of living in the UAE. While Julie’s busy with her website expansion to Qatar, Bahrain, and Kuwait, her eyes are on a house at Jumeirah Park that she’d like to invest in, so she can decorate it however she likes - with glass tables and coloured walls. UPCYCLING FURNITURE

Found a great flea market bargain, but not fond of the look? Tweak it to look as good as new

TIP 1: Reupholster Inject new life into an armchair or couch by replacing worn-out or stained fabric. “You can create a bespoke new item for your home, while saving money in the process. It’s important however, to consider the structure of the furniture piece before deciding whether to revamp it,” says Irina Katchan, Product Marketing Manager at Dubizzle. Remember to always do the ‘rub test’ on fabric you’re choosing to upholster furniture with – anything above 20,000 thread count is durable, and long-lasting.

TIP 2: Give it a lining Shelves and drawers don’t have to retain the same colour of the entire piece. To customise your furniture piece, Irina reccomends turning the drawers to line it upside down. Measure the size of the shelf or SEPTEMBER 2015 | www.bhomes.com

TIP 3: H idde n u p gr a de s board, and cut out leftover wallpaper to line it neatly. This works perfectly for the inside of bookshelves as well. You could also glue mirrors to the back of bookshelves to add depth, and give it a unique, modern look.

When shopping for lampshades, Irina suggests buying one for less than Dhs30, to make it look attractive by giving it your own spin. “Cut your own stencil pattern from a card piece, and spray paint a

design onto the lampshade, or glue stick-on jewels or lace on it, for a stylish touch,” she says. Keep in mind that any dark-coloured material or paint on the inside of the shade is likely to show when you switch the lamp on.

39

TIP 4: A coat of paint Spray-painting isn’t just an affordable way to instantly refresh a piece, it’s also effective for literally any furniture item – whether an old table, chair, chest of drawers, or shelves and cabinets. Use spray paint with a glossy finish for items that are frequently

used, to make cleaning as easy as possible. You should also prime furniture before painting. If the look of your furniture is still as appealing as when you first bought it, you don’t have to paint the whole piece, you could just do the legs of a chair or sofa – use a thin brush with long

bristles to do this. “Strip your furniture down to the bare bones, remove all the fluff and excess, like the fabrics, and then sand off the paint from solid wood furniture,” says Sebastian A.S Strassburg, Creative Director at OPM House. Sometimes the actual piece

of furniture is beautiful, and can be complemented with a sheet of glass to act as a tabletop or shelf, or a plank as a bench. He also suggests using chalkboard paint on shelves, tables, and the fridge, to turn it into an appealing writable surface that is durable, and long-lasting,

TI P 5 R e p u r p o se items Think outside the box a little. Got a boring little side table which collects dust in the corner? Turn it upside down, stick a cushion in the cavity, and make a four-poster bed for your little pet dog or cat. You could also repurpose an old solid door. Sebastian recommends putting a sturdy frame underneath it, to make

a fancy new table. “I once came across an old fridge that was put on its back within a wooden frame and left in the garden, turning it into an outdoor ice-chest for garden parties,” he says. There’s plenty that can be done to second-hand furniture, to make it more personalised and suitable for your home. www.bhomes.com | SEPTEMBER 2015

KITCHEN ESSENTIALS Equip your kitchen, beyond the refrigerator, microwave, and stove, so that it is stocked with the requisite tools and equipment

B AK EWA RE The heavenly smell of freshly baked bread, quiche, and cakes should be reason enough for you to own beautiful stoneware or porcelain baking pans. These aren’t only presentable for dinner parties, but durable too. Enameled steel baking trays have their advantages over traditional clad steel or cast iron pans and trays, as it’s lighter and easy to clean too. A large roasting pan with rack is also a handy item, especially if you want to throw ingredients together for a last minute dish, or roast.

CARBON STEEL WOK There are plenty of dishes, other than a stir-fry, you can make using a wok. The quick heating and tall sides allow you to pan-fry, deep-fry, steam, smoke, and even braise meats. A number of options are available on the market, so choose a good non-stick one to suit your budget.

FOOD PROCESSOR This handy gadget might be an SEPTEMBER 2015 | www.bhomes.com

expensive one to invest in at first, but it’s well worth it. The food processors available on the market nowadays come with multiple accessories, and while you may think you don’t need it at first, you will soon be reaching out to it for literally every dish you cook. Use it to whisk cake batter, mix dough, mince meat, chop vegetables, grind nuts, and blend soups.

MORTAR AND PESTLE Take dishes to the next level with the use of ground spices. You don’t need a high-tech grinder to make spice powders, as a stone or marble mortar and pestle are just as efficient. They also give your kitchen a retro look.

STAINLESS STEEL PANS These are probably the only pans you will be using on a daily basis. A sauté pan, with straight sides and a wide bottom, can be used to simmer

chicken or meat in a sauce, as well as shallow pan-fry and sauté vegetables. Heat liquids like cream, butter and soup, and blanch or steam vegetables, in a saucepan. You could also use a large sauce to boil pasta or rice.

CAST-IRON SKILLET Steak-lovers need this in their arsenal, to sear meat before grilling or cooking in the oven. You can also make cobbler, pizza, roast chicken, and a number of desserts in a skillet. They are usually heavy-duty, so invest in a good one, once and for all.

DUTCH OVEN Family-sized meals are best made in this. There are quite a few renowned names on the market (Le Creuset and Staub) and they come in an array of colours and sizes. Use it cook a whole chicken, bake bread, braise ribs, cook stew and pasta, poach fish, or fry French fries.

MEET THE NEIGHBOURS The Singh family live in a three-bedroom villa with their five-year-old daughter Aisha.

“We moved here when Aisha was two, because we were thinking ahead, to the start of nursery and school. There are plenty of options for her, from kindergarten to secondary school, and she has already made lots of friends who all live close by. I personally like the friendly neighbours, and that sense of community. Green Community is so convenient – we go shopping at The Courtyard Mall, there are nice restaurants nearby, and we all enjoy walking around the parks when the weather is cool. My husband works in Jebel Ali, so it’s close by for him too, and the roads are quiet, which is good for his commute and safe for Aisha.” www.bhomes.com | SEPTEMBER 2015

EDITOR’S PICK Tea cultures and traditions have long drawn me to the art that goes into brewing the perfect cup. It’s not just the aroma and flavour of tea leaves, the actual set is just as significant. After all, when it comes to teapots and cups, I most definitely judge by the cover – is there any other way? The minute eyes were laid on The St James fine bone china tea set, available in the most glamorous blue, it was a no-brainer it had to be part of my ever-growing arsenal. The set, an original Chinoiserie design depicting an 18th century tea party, includes teacups and saucers, teapots, mugs, plates, tiered cake stands, sugar bowls, tea caddies and creamers, for two.
