ubai has long ditched its reputation for offering a limited selection of mainstream furniture suitable for a transient population, and we have the likes of Lebanese architect Fadi Sarieddine (page 28) to thank for it. He made the city his home more than a decade ago and quickly began making furniture that he wanted for his own place. He credits the emirate’s thriving design scene to the city’s innovative approach, the success of Design Days Dubai and the rise of creative hub Dubai Design District (d3). To keep you cool this month, we have plenty of home décor inspiration, from refreshing cream colour schemes (page 23) to a hotel-influenced, minimalist villa located in Jumeirah Park (page 34). While it’s too hot to spend time outside, it’s the perfect season to complete the projects you’ve been meaning to start, from upgrading the kitchen (page 30) to installing a swimming pool – interior designer Natascha Roes explains how to achieve the infinity look even in a walled-in garden (page 21). If you’re looking to move, desert-styled Arabian Ranches (page 47) is one of the most popular communities for families. Close to Dubai Equestrian & Polo Club, the neighbourhood offers beautifully laid-out, spacious townhouses and villas.

Ask the eXPert Simon Kluth, co-owner of Travers Antiques, on how to add Art Deco to your home. “Strikingly modern at the time, Art Deco was the musthave look in the 1920s and ’30s. Interiors were simplified with streamlined designs of geometric form. The elegant, luxurious and comfortable

style continues to influence designers 100 years later. “The best way to introduce a new look into your home is in small doses. I suggest accessorising with Art Deco classics, such as bronze panther sculptures and frosted glass vases by René Lalique. Cream leather was a favourite of the period but it is
seen so often in modern homes that I would advise opting for a distinctive geometric fabric to add individuality. Shades of mint green, primrose and cream, often with contrasting black, gold and silver detail were popular. “For lighting, look for wall sconces and ceiling lights in the Odeon Cinema style.”

Discover how to pick the right piece with some expert advice
“Firstly, look for a piece of art that stimulates you visually,” advises Sylvain Gaillard, director of Opera Gallery Dubai. “Simply put, the artwork will become part of your everyday life, so make sure you acquire a piece that you love. Secondly, decide on the style that you are going for, as well as the purpose. If you want to start building a collection, the approach will be different than if you are looking for a few pieces to add to your home décor. Art and home décor should be treated separately. If you are trying to find a piece just because there is an empty space above your couch, then you are

decorating. Find out which type of art excites you most, or what type of art is a projection of your values and the atmosphere you want to set for your house. Do you want a decorative piece, a conversation artwork or a vanity piece? When you find an artwork or an artist that you feel you must own, the placement of the artwork is secondary. Pick a piece that you like and then figure out the best location in the house. On a practical note, do not place your artworks in a location where they receive direct sunlight to avoid damaging them. If you are adamant about putting a valuable piece in a naturally-lit area, get the artwork encased in a museum-quality, nonreflective plexiglass case to help preserve it.”

Natascha Roes, managing director and founder of Natascha Roes Design I would like to install a swimming pool in my garden. Where should I start? While we all might be dreaming of having an infinity pool at the edge of a cliff overlooking the ocean, the reality is that most gardens in Dubai are walled in. Nevertheless, the infinity look can easily be created with the right amount of lush greenery around the pool, which camouflages the outer edges of the space. When it comes to the shape and size of the pool it is important to consider your lifestyle. For example, if you want to use it for your daily workout, then choose a simple lap pool. If you would like to use it for relaxing, or for the occasional massage, then you might want to opt for a pool with builtin jet streams. There are a myriad tile options for cladding the pool interior, which can be illuminated from inside to create a dramatic effect. Make sure that the pavement tiles around the pool are non-slippery – natural unpolished stone, such as limestone, always works beautifully. Timber decking and a wooden pergola will give the area around the pool the luxurious feel for outdoor living even during the hot summer months.
sandy colours. Use a bold dash of red or orange with your cushions – I love Jim Thompson’s natural silk Ekamai – and let the natural light play with clear glass and Perspex accessories. Frame your favourite artwork or pictures on the wall with black frames. Big leafy green plants like the fiddle-leaf fig tree will not only complement, but also synergise, any area in your home. Where do you recommend I shop for furniture on a budget? We spend most of our time at home in bed and on our sofa, so I always recommend spending the larger part of any budget on these two furniture pieces. I would go for a King Koil mattress (with bed base) that matches your sleeping habits and comforts and custommake a headboard to shape the space of your bedroom (Designer’s Space is great for this). Look for comfortable sofas at Indigo Living, while Zara Home is a treasure trove of nifty, stylish accessories.
My little black book For stateMent pieces: I love online marketplace 1stdibs (1stdibs.com) for antique pieces. Locally, I find unusual artefacts at Caspaiou (caspaiou.com) or, if I need affordable pieces, Tribe (tribedubai.com) has a very interesting selection, which are fair trade, too.
For light Fittings: I like browsing Nakkash Gallery (nakkashgallery.com) for its unique and quirky lamps.

I want to create a serene look throughout my new villa. How can I get it right? Start by choosing a calming wall colour, such as Benjamin Moore’s Vanilla Milkshake, and take this throughout the whole villa to connect all the rooms. Combine this with a pale stone – Crema Marfil marble or white ceramic tiles are good choices – while painted wood and neutrals, such as grey and taupe combined with natural fabrics like linen and cotton, are a great way to lift the space. Add floaty sheer fabrics on the windows. I recommend Glenmoye by Designers Guild in either taupe or bhomes.com | 21

Design DNA
Splurge on...
I like to develop space and display colour as much as possible. I also adore working with different materials and art. My design philosophy resembles the same as my family ethos: keep it simple and warm. I am always drawn to objects I grew up with, including photos and small drawings. We moved a lot while I was younger, which probably influenced my passion for redecorating.
Wallpaper or paint?
They are equally complementary; they define a space and add character to a certain section of a room. Wallpaper is dramatic and animates a space while luscious, rich paints provide depth and warmth. Using both together gives the room an identity and a creative edge so ultimately I could not choose one over the other. If you are on a budget, you can dramatically change the feeling of a room with a beautiful paint.
Prized possession
Personal pictures and drawings make my house a home and give it soul. I believe that having your individual prized possessions
A beautiful piece of art or a bespoke piece of furniture. You can build a whole room around a single piece of art and, if you make the right choice, it can also become an interesting talking point.

I collaborate with the French online concept store I Light You (ilightyou.ae), which is also based in Dubai. It is the first online shop that offers more than 300 design brands and, from this month, The DEN (thedenconcept.com) will stock a selection of these lamps. I also work on interior design projects with Ikon House (ikonhouse.com) – it has a lighting study and amazing home automation.

Colour combo to try
I see so many great shades as a distributor of the French paint specialist brand Ressource (ressource-peintures.com), so it is difficult to advise on one colour combination. However, if you want to mix two colours on a wall, I recommend choosing a dark colour for the bottom up to 80 cm from the ground. Then, put a bright or pastel colour above, which will place an emphasis on the light colour, and give a room some character.

Seeking the new Fadi Sarieddine on designing in a city that celebrates experimentation Interview: Lucy Land
Lebanese architect Fadi Sarieddine’s move to Dubai 13 years ago sparked his multidisciplinary approach to design. His collections include ‘Dubai Syndrome’, a range of outdoor furniture that he originally developed in 2008 and has since revisited. Made from rebars and concrete, it is a direct commentary on Dubai’s strategic construction plan and post-industrial times. We caught up with him at his Dubai Design District (d3) atelier… You grew up in Lebanon during the Civil War. How did that experience influence your perception of architecture and design? During the chaos of war, key landmarks as well as everyday objects in Beirut started to gain new uses. The main Beirut stadium became a refugee camp, while a car tire transformed from an object of mobility into an object of obstruction [car tires were piled and burned as roadblocks during the Lebanese troubles]. These types of perceptions, alongside much-needed survival resourcefulness, indirectly influenced my approach to design; materials are exported out their usual meaning into a new context. How did you find your niche? When I moved with my family to Dubai in 2004 to seek new opportunities, we didn’t opt for the readily available mainstream furniture, so I began designing my own. Friends and family started asking me to design furniture for their homes, too, which became a nighttime hobby until we realised how big the demand was for something original. Together with my wife, who played a key role in initiating the whole story, we established the studio in 2013. It was one of the first licensed businesses in d3. Since then, our work has grown through word of mouth. How has your experience in Dubai inspired your work? Dubai is the ideal city for those who want to experiment in design. I see the rawness of the city as an advantage – it’s very receptive to new ideas. The entrepreneurial courage indirectly trickles down from Dubai’s leadership to creative people like us. Crucially, d3 is proving to be a very good design hub with an amazing network of businesses that complement each other. I appreciate the strong sense of community – it can’t be found anywhere else in Dubai. How is the local design scene developing? Dubai is gaining a good postition in the world’s design scene. Design Days Dubai played a crucial role in putting the emirate on the design map, and in triggering the development of the community’s taste for contemporary design. The city is attracting an increasing pool of talent, which will positively impact the whole design scene.
28 | bhomes.com
What’s the best design advice you’ve been given? To never give up when you’re faced with a technical challenge and to persist until the initial vision is materialised. Describe a typical working day… I tend to design in short spurts. My working day is divided between short design sessions in my pod interrupted by run arounds in the studio to follow up on the development of the various projects. Plus, there’s always a client meeting or an inspection visit to the factory. What are you currently working on? We are working on a number of new self-assigned furniture pieces, as well as a number of residences and offices in Dubai and Beirut. When you’re not working, where can we find you? I like to be in a street café drinking good coffee or spending time at home. l take part in sports every day, preferably outdoors, but when it comes to relaxing, I drink coffee and read. What piece of work are you most proud of so far? ‘Dubai Syndrome’ as it was a defining starting point. It tells a story of the city. What’s next? We are participating in Dubai Design Week and Beirut Design Fair. We are also very excited to be collaborating with Van Cleef & Arpels on the design of its L’Ecole, which takes place in November 2017 at Hai d3. fadisarieddine.com

Originally completely enclosed, this kitchen has been transformed into a bright, sleek contemporary family space by German company Hacker Kitchens (hacker.ae). Polar White gloss handleless cabinets were installed flush to the lounge space to create a large open-plan living, dining and entertaining area. They contrast beautifully with the Black Arden Blue Volcano work surfaces, while industrialstyle manual roller shutters hide small appliances and cook books tidily out of sight when not in use. The central island has cabinets underneath, which
incorporate a pantry pull-out and pan drawers for practical and easy access while LED lighting under the cabinets and plinth lighting around the island ensures the space looks extra special as day turns to night. Durable Ter-Hurne Luxury Vinyl Tile flooring in limed oak was installed throughout the living space and Miele appliances complete the clean look.

Let there be light
Optimising the space between washing, preparation and cooking areas, this large, open-plan kitchen in a Jumeirah Park villa was designed by Spanish manufacturer Santos (santos.ae). Handleless white cabinets, combined
with tall units that provide plenty of storage space, as well as housing for the Siemens ovens, give a sleek look to the island, while the Elica hood feature connects the dining area to the kitchen. The contemporary space is integrated
with the living room and enhanced by the wood flooring and feature wall with stone cladding, which provides contrast to the white kitchen. A sliding glass wall maximises the natural light and Kartell Masters stools add a style statement.

T
he idea of being beautifully furnished is not about filling your space,” says Susan Job as she glances around the ground floor of her stunning Jumeirah Park villa. She should know; the India-born mother of two daughters works in relocation and real estate, so she’s seen plenty of homes that get it right and many that don’t. Her husband, Jason, who works in finance, shares her vision. “We focused on decorating our home with very distinctive pieces that are functional but simultaneously gorgeous to look at and, crucially, don’t hinder the flow of the space,” she explains, adding: “We love how glass and metal work together in combination with wood, and the idea was to also keep it all quite minimal.” The statement pieces include a large, circular sculptural artwork picked by Jason, giant vases supporting a few stems of oversized greenery and numerous furnishings – from the likes of FUSION by THE One, Mood and Marina Home – that are mostly made from natural materials. Inherent variations, such as the tones in marble and texture of wood were key to the selection process. “When we saw a marble table in Mood and placed an order for it, the one that arrived had quite different ground colours and veins to the instore version we had seen, so we returned it and waited for one more similar to the original we had liked.” After that, the couple tagged their favourite instore furnishings so that those would be the specific ones that would be delivered. The organic-style home accessories offer some surprises. For example, the shades on two lamps

look like steel, but are made from glass painted to look metallic. “When you turn them on at night, you can see the driftwood [which forms the lamp body] and imagine you’re on the beach,” she enthuses. Interestingly, Susan and her husband bought all their pieces from Dubai, except for the Space Cloud light by Italian company Artemide, which hangs above the dining table. “We couldn’t visualise size and how things would work together by shopping online. Seeing things in the stores enabled us to see exactly how it would work,” she explains. Even their choice of wallpapers, imported from the UK and France, were ordered through local distributers so they could initially check samples before ordering rolls. However, she admits: “We’ve also bought enough things and then sent them back, either because they were too big or didn’t complement other items.” The couple’s determination to see the fruition of their vision has resulted in a second replanting of the garden and calling in Floor World to rectify the damage caused by another flooring company that they initially employed, which meant having floors taken out and restarting the process of choosing the colours, having the measurements taken and getting the new wooden floors fitted. “The final result is amazing – it was worth the effort,” Susan affirms. Her home decorating experience also taught her that the depth of paint colour is stronger on application than revealed in the tin. “If you use a non-neutral colour paint on two walls that are bhomes.com | 37

They didn’t make any structural changes, but due to the west-facing position of the living and dining area, three windows on the ground floor – including a circular one that now forms a frame for the aforementioned large artwork – were closed in. “Before the work, it was like living in a glass box. We have a good extension to the outdoors, which keeps the house light, but it’s no longer too hot,” she says. Her favourite part of her home is the upstairs landing area, which was transformed into a cosy family space with a sofa made especially to align along the curved wall, while the pantry area was turned into a home office. “It’s a very comfortable space and I can work with the kids playing around me.” Susan and her husband called in hotel interiors specialists, Silver Leaf Interiors LLC for much of the bespoke work on their home. The company custom made the bed, curtains and chair for the ground floor guest room; the upstairs sofa;
the curtains, pouf and pillows in her youngest daughter, Liv’s room; the curtains and bedside table, which graduates into the study area and curved shelves in her elder daughter Kiara’s bedroom. The second guest room has an industrial feel with a tall headboard and feature wall cleverly concealing a treadmill, while the mirrored back wall makes the room appear larger. “The whole room was built around the treadmill,” Susan smiles. “It hides the ugliness of the equipment perfectly.” In contrast, the main bedroom with its spainspired en-suite bathroom has a Zen-like quality to it. “My husband is always very busy with work so we don’t take as many holidays as we would like,” Susan says. “To compensate, we often check into a local hotel for a short break. The kids get so excited – all they want to do is jump on the bed. It’s one of the reasons we chose a hotel interior specialist company to work on our home.” Susan’s meticulous attention to detail has clearly paid off. She has succeeded in creating a luxurious home that includes talking point pieces, while simultaneously offering a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere.

Shapeshifter This family home in New Delhi seamlessly blends natural materials and traditional values for an artisanal approach Words: Lucy Land

W
ithin the bustle of New Delhi, there’s a serene farmland upon which a large family residence sprawls. Designed by award-winning architects Sonali and Manit Rastogi of Morphogenesis, this impressive property, named Artisan House, is designed as a welcoming family space while also making the most of the natural surroundings on which the property is located. Home to a three-generation Indian family, including the homeowners, their three children and a grandparent, the property is also a meeting point for the rest of the family, which comprises of several sisters and their families. “It is, at one level, a house for six people, and, at another level, a celebration space for the entire extended joint family,” explains Sonali. The 22,000 sq. ft. building is located just off centre of the 2.75-acre lush green landscape on which it sits, allowing for a large front lawn. Moreover, the entire project – architecture, structure, landscape and interior – was conceived to work seamlessly together. Its splitlevel design, for example, is a result of integrating the building with the terrain to make the home more energy efficient. “As we move down two to three metres, and further, the soil temperature naturally sits at a constant temperature, which is the average annual temperature of the region,” Sonali explains. “So the earth itself becomes an insulator to the adjacent rooms of the house while the topography of the site allowed us to naturally thermally bank a large part of this property.” The design came about after plenty of conversations between the architects and the homeowners, who were supportive of Morphogenesis’ vision. “The starting point was a syncing of minds,” Sonali says. “To convince a rooted, grounded Indian family to go for this kind of avant-garde approach could easily have been a hurdle, but it was met with much enthusiasm.” He is extremely grateful for this: “Every architect and designer wants to do something unusual that hasn’t been seen before. However, it is patronage that truly allows for it and, in this particular case, there was a patron who was excited by newness. What’s more, the homeowners reminded us on a regular basis to remain in that state of mind.” The design team worked with natural materials, including wood, stone and metal and carefully considered the natural light. “The interesting thing about this project is that it was approached wall by wall rather than

Light and shadow form the poetry and inclusiveness of light in this project
room by room.” This approach created a strong graphic element to the design. Moreover, the walls were used to exclude the sun’s harshest rays while integrated courtyards allowed daylight to reach the complete home interior. “It’s not just light; it is light and shadow that, together, form the poetry and inclusiveness of light in the project, and this is something that we have worked towards consciously,” Sonali reveals. Among traditional Indian households, courtyards offer a space where the extended family gathers for meals, events and celebrations. For the design of this house, the courtyards also play an important role in the family’s own cultural practices. The property’s harmonious design is perhaps most apparent in the stunning

living room. Its focal point is a 20 ft tree above which is a skylight, part of which is in water. “It seamlessly marries the interior with the outdoors,” Sonali enthuses. “It offer a variety of experiences and its unique design will ensure it continues to stay relevant to the home’s occupants.” The project is something that Sonali was thrilled to be involved with. “Working on Artisan House gave us the opportunity to work towards re-establishing a patronage for these artisanal skills and contribute towards cultural sustainability – something I feel very strongly about. It’s one of the reasons I chose to be an architect, and it has been an honour and a pleasure to have an owner-patron driving this project.”

Donna Marie Apuhin, Residential Consultant, on living in a sought-after desert-themed community Arguably one of the most familyfriendly communities in Dubai, Arabian Ranches is a well-established integrated residential community that is best known for its desert-themed landscape set over 1,650 acres. Developed by UAEbased property developer Emaar, the neighbourhood is also popular for its 18hole championship golf course, as well as Dubai Equestrian & Polo Club. Centrally located, near to Global Village, Arabian Ranches is easily accessible via E311 Sheikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Road and Emirates Road. It is 10 minutes’ drive from Mall of the Emirates, 20 minutes’ from Downtown Dubai and an easy drive to Sharjah and Abu Dhabi. The neighbourhood features 4,000 homes in 19 distinct communities, and comprises a diverse range of townhouses and villas catering to families of different sizes. Properties offer generous living space and include balconies, courtyards or terraces and range from affordable twobedroom plus maid’s room townhouses to luxurious seven-bedroom villas located on the golf course. Each community is inspired by various architectural styles, including Spanish, Portuguese and Arabic. Within the 19 communities, there are sub-communities, each of which has its own swimming pool, parks, walking paths and children’s play area. With five lakes throughout, Arabian Ranches also offers two village
community centres with retail amenities, including Carrefour supermarket, numerous restaurants, fast food outlets and coffee shops. It also has a medical clinic next to one of the community centres and educational institutions, including British curriculum school JESS Dubai, which caters to FS1 to Year 13 (age three to 18) children and Ranches Primary School, located in Arabian Ranches 2. For visitors, the Arabian Ranches Golf Club offers 11 guestrooms and a restaurant within its clubhouse. The community also has activities that are initiated by the residents, such as an annual Halloween party held at the golf club, which is sponsored by Emaar Community Management. There is also a very active group called Arabian Ranches Ladies, which meets weekly at the golf club. The neighbourhood doesn’t have access to Dubai Metro but there is a public bus service that runs throughout the community and reaches Mall of the Emirates in about half an hour. There are also plenty of taxis available, particularly close to the community centres. With its spacious and well laid-out townhouses and villas set in a tranquil landscape in an established community, Arabian Ranches is an especially popular community for families that’s uniquely accessible to all.
