Living Room Ikea is all about practical solutions, and this living room is apt for those who have a compact space to work with. The grey, off-white, and green tones complement the blue hue, and while the room is quite crowded, it has just the right amount of essentials to make it feel lived in. The glass showcase is a great way of displaying sculptures, while the crystal chandelier pairs beautifully with it. When picking tables, try to go with matching materials and colours. Look for a rug in a shade or two lighter than the couches, to tie it all together.

umeirah Park, a fairly new community just a street away from Emirates Living, may be in dire need of signage to locate a person’s home, but once you’re within the vicinity packed with villas, you can’t ignore the lush greenery, spacious grounds, and architecture all around. Pamela Haidat, a mother of four – all below the age of 12 – is of Irish origin, and married to a Moroccan national. The partner of a local law firm Nasser Malalla Advocates and Legal Consultants, designer of Baynona abayas, and riding tutor for the disabled at Al Marmoom Equine Therapy, Pamela moved to Jumeirah Park two years ago, from The Lakes. “This house offered

interior inspiration to her childhood in the country. “I like anything that feels farmhouse or cottage like, because it makes me reminiscent of the countryside.” The house is an impressive mix of cultural backgrounds, with Moroccan cushions, and kitchen accessories adding a burst of colour. Pamela has a serious penchant for Moroccan items, and finds herself collecting crockery while travelling - she has even gone to the extent of purchasing plates from restaurants. Her love for crockery and food can be seen on her Instagram page (@Peejpantry), and it’s not just there for beautiful imagery purposes. She loves cooking everything from 1,000

more space as a family, community parks that are great for the children, and a shopping centre,” says Pamela. “We’re lucky we live in a cluster where we have parks, so children of all ages play out every evening, and you can meet other mothers too.” The home is a reflection of her background, marriage between cultures, and years spent in the Middle East. The Mashrabiya-mirrored main door takes you into an open style living space with neutral, earthy tones and white furnishing that meets the eye instantly. “The way my villa faces, the sunlight comes from the other side. Coming in here gives you a feeling of calm, although it’s not the best colour scheme when you have young children around,” she says. Pamela credits her

hole pancakes – a Moroccan specialty – to tagines. Friday mornings in the household see the family gather at the maroon-themed majlis that goes out into the garden. “We get together at 7am and indulge in a heavy meal, while talking to each other.” The majlis was a way of integrating a bit of the Middle East into her home, and she tells us the family enjoys playing out on the weekends while enjoying the privacy the backyard offers. In front of the majlis sits a large fountain, trampoline to one side, and a giant playhouse from a local company, on the other end. Somewhere in the backyard you can find four turtles loitering around as well. The home showcases pieces from all over the world, the UK, Jaipur – for handcrafted textiles, rugs and cushions –

Better Homes Magazine | HOME TOUR and Morocco. Some of Pamela’s favourite home décor stores are Marina Home, The One, and Crate and Barrel, however most of the pieces have been tweaked in some way or the other. “I buy pieces and upholster them, or change the look/ finish completely,” says Pamela. A lot of the items are antique, or second-hand, or brought in from the UK and given new life with a coat of paint. A large rug that Pamela tells us is handcrafted, and from Afghanistan, hangs on one of the living room walls. The piece belonged to her mother, and she placed it up in memory of her. That’s not the only piece from back home though. The piano was shipped in too, adding elegance to the casual setting. Rugs from Pottery Barn cover the floor, beneath each living and dining set in the room. The bedrooms are upstairs, and Pamela tells us the rooms were one of the main reasons for choosing the home, as they are en-suite and boast excellent storage solutions. The two girls share a pale pink and beige-themed bedroom, while the boy’s have a nautical space. Both comprise bunk beds from Big Bear, a children’s furniture store in Umm

Pamela highly recommends the community, purely for privacy within the grounds Suqeim. “I picked colours that will suit them as they grow, and focused on maximising space as much as possible, so that they can do their homework and play when friends come over.” Around the home, accessories from Cottage Chic, Marina Home, and Bliss flowers add vibrancy. “I prefer picking up things as and when I find them, to make it all a bit more eclectic,” says Pamela. This is displayed in the garden. In terms of a family community and the villa offerings, Pamela highly recommends it, purely for the open style of living, privacy within the grounds, storage solutions – especially in the bedrooms – ability to build more rooms, and finishing. “Many of my neighbours have built a bedroom where the lounge is, and extended the kitchen,” she says. Pamela plans on adding a bedroom in the balcony upstairs, and breaking down a wall to extend the kitchen to a large family space. “I’d like to add a French rustic kitchen scheme, and a door that goes directly to the garden,” she says with content.

HOW-TO: CREATE A MAJLIS SETTING AT HOME

COM FORTABLE SEATING

“A majlis was traditionally a place for a tribal leader to host assemblies and offer hospitality to fellow tribemembers. It has now evolved into a social meeting spot, still playing an important role in Arabic culture,” says Merete Broen, General Manager of Zen Interiors. Before building a majlis, Nahel Selo, creative director of Sedar recommends picking a location and colour scheme. “The overall theme is usually gold and red, but with increasing influence from younger generations, it has become modern and contemporary with neutral colours,” says Nahel. A majlis comprises lowlevel seating placed around the walls of a room - comfort is paramount with cushions being a practical and aesthetic addition.

FURNISH THE SPACE

Providing hospitality to guests in the form of coffee and snacks such as dates, sweets and fruit, plays a vital role in the functioning of a majlis. Place small side tables for guests to rest their cups and plates on. Merete suggests adding a number of coffee tables in the centre of the room, with plenty of space for the

group to circulate and greet each other without furniture obstruction To make the space larger and give the illusion of depth, choose white or light-coloured furniture. “It is important to have at least one dark coloured element to add contrast to the space. Having everything in light opaque colors will not give you that edgy contemporary feel,” Nahel tells us. Avoid sharp edges for the seating and soft furnishing, and opt for round corners instead. “This creates a bigger, infinite space where everything appears continuous,” she says. “Raise your curtains or blinds well above the window frame to give the illusion that your ceiling is high, thus creating a bigger space.”

ladies out of sheep, goat or camel wool – covered the floor. As a result, Merete and Nahel cater to requests for carpets, or at the very least, rugs, to retain the authenticity of this room’s function.

ACCURACY IS KEY

FINISHING TOUCHES

It’s important to get the measurements correct, and know exactly what you’re working with in a space. “Be as precise as possible, and remember if the seats aren’t close together, the gaps forming in between each sofa set can get frustrating,” says Nahel.

THE FLOORS

Back in the day, palm fronds or handmade carpets – made by Bedouin

42 MARCH 2016 | www.bhomes.com

ILLUMINATE IT

A majlis is used at different times of the day and evening, making flexible lighting solutions a key part of the design. “We filter natural daylight into the room with soft drapes, and often clients request these to evoke the look of Bedouin tents,” says Merete. Installing lights allows the homeowner to adjust the mood depending on the time of day and the occasion, thus overhead lighting is combined with wall uplighters, and floor lamps for darker corners.

Once you’ve chosen the fabrics, seating, and flooring, opt for wallpaper with faded geometric motifs, or lanterns. Accessorise the majlis with mother of pearl inlay, stucco wall effects, or modern calligraphy artwork, to give it that Arabesque feel. The décor should reflect the taste and personality of the homeowner, but as it’s such a public space, this needs to be taken into consideration too.

Kitchens aren’t always equipped with the best lighting options, making bad lighting a common issue. When the room looks dull and uninviting, it’s time to make change. “You can add in warm coloured lighting, and angle the lights to highlight key features. For instance, a funky piece of art or furniture,” says Leigh Ann. Under cabinet lights make a huge difference too, as they bring a different light source into the mix. You can switch them separately for mood lighting, when the kitchen isn’t being used to cook or do anything that requires full task lighting. Changing the ceiling from those awful tiles to a freshly painted flush plaster board finish, has a great impact as well.

MODIFY THE W O R K TO P S

Grey-coloured countertops may be convenient and effective for daily use, but not as appealing to the eye. Leigh Ann Steele, Senior Designer at Hacker Kitchens recommends swapping these for laminate, as it is the most cost effective material readily available locally. “There are some unusual textures and funky colours, and they aren’t as cold to the touch as marble granite or quartz material are,” she says. If you are using quartz, be sure to go with a reputable supplier and fabricator who cuts worktops regularly, or you may be disappointed. For those who aren’t aware, wellproduced quartz will not stain as it is completely non-porous. Even if you were to leave turmeric on it overnight, as long as you scrub hard enough it will come out. Be sure not to use anything acidic though as this could harm the surface. The best part is it comes in various sizes and textures – from volcano to suede.

R E VA M P T H E F LO O R I N G

Tiles fitted out in most homes here can appear old-fashioned, or worn out, due to tainted grout over the years. Leigh Ann recommends LVT (luxury vinyl tile) flooring, as it looks similar to wood, is only 6mm thick, and can be placed over existing tiles. In addition, the surface is waterproof, making it ideal for the space. Overall it’s quick and easy to install as well, while additionally giving the illusion of space. You could also look into a resin or concrete floor, available in a wide selection of colours.

ADD A S P L AS H B AC K

If you are replacing the countertop, you could also consider changing the splashback to the same material. “The beauty of a single piece of stone is that you won’t have grimy grout joints appear over time in cooking and wet areas,” she says. A back painted splashback is another option. Tiles are a perennial favourite too, and you can choose hexagonal marble to slithers of natural stone. The only downside is of the grout lines, which may get dirty over time in your cooking and sink areas especially. Make sure the contractor installs a waterproof grout.

Freshly painted walls in neutral colours are the most appealing in a kitchen. If you prefer something a little different, try painting a feature wall with special effect paints. You can also look into a textured brick finish, which revamps the space without depleting your bank account. If you do use wallpaper, make sure it is suitable for areas with high moisture content. Try not to put these anywhere near the cooking or washing up stations. Wallpaper and water/steam don’t mix well. To take the entire space up a notch, you can swap door knobs, handles and faucets for coloured options – think rose gold!

ot many women can say they’ve been to the North Pole, climbed a number of the world’s highest mountains and trekked across the Sahara on horseback. These might sound like the feats of a seasoned explorer or Olympian rather than an interior designer, but they’re actually the intrepid achievements of Katharine Pooley. Conversely, having an innate sense of adventure and discovery goes handin-hand with interior design. This is a sector that demands imagination and the persistent exploration of materials, manufacturing, technology, colour, decoration and ideas – and for Pooley, projects that allow her to travel across the globe.

“I’m very proud that we are such an international company,” reveals Pooley. “I am very well travelled but it’s not just a hobby, it’s my life; it’s who I am. People can be frightened to visit new places but I’ve worked on projects all over the world. We are not worried about war-torn countries or if it’s difficult for women to work there; we are happy to go where the challenge takes us.” Pooley grew up Bahrain and has lived in Hong Kong, Singapore, Vietnam, Australia and New York, before settling in England. Her studio and boutique are based in London where she has over 40 employees. They’ve worked all over – English country homes, Scottish castles, Swiss ski chalets, apartments in Singapore, Kuwaiti palaces, hotels in

China and even the Royal VIP lounges at Heathrow’s Terminal 5 – which was an adventure that ended up taking her to the Middle East. “This was how I met my business partner Nasser al Ansari and it is a rather lovely story,” she says. “He came through the VIP lounges and loved what he saw so he approached me and asked if I would open a second boutique and studio in Doha. “I grew up in Bahrain so I am very familiar with the Middle East. My mother has lived there for 40 years and we have spent many holidays in Dubai and Qatar. I know that in Dubai it’s quite easy to ship things, but Doha was different, and even now it lacks highend interior design shops.”

Better Homes Magazine | DESIGN INSPIRATION

To tempt her to expand in the region, Al Ansari commissioned her to design his own family home West Bay. It worked. Not only did the chairman of Octagon International gain a beautiful family home for his wife and three children, but the city has gained Katharine Pooley Doha, a 3,000-square-foot luxury design and lifestyle boutique. Pooley’s childhood in the Middle East and her extensive travels have given her an edge over other interior designers trying to crack the market here. “Because I am such an international person myself I am very well versed on how people live and I know the small nuances and particularities that certain nationalities

want from a home,” she explains. “I do understand the world and I know what Indians, Russians, Chinese, for example, prefer to have. Some nationalities don’t like baths like the English do but they prefer showers; some like bidets in the bathroom while others don’t use them; Indian households like hand showers. Every nationality is different and I think it’s important to understand all of them so we can get it right. “If you talked to an interior designer in London they probably wouldn’t know what a majlis is or how it should be seated; they don’t understand that men and women do things differently in the Middle East and have private rooms and quarters.” Pooley created separate majlises for

Mr and Mrs Al Ansari. The women’s majlis is a cosy yet sociable Moroccanstyle room where she can have tea with her friends. Soft furnishings in orange, gold and copper create a warm and rich ambience. Meanwhile, her husband enjoys a large bachelor-pad-type games room with a pool table, a jukebox and a bar, plus a reception area with plenty of seating for guests. The bright red of the pool table felt is accentuated with aplomb via small accents in the cushions, jukebox lights and votive candleholders. “It’s very unusual for a Middle East man to have a room like that,” Pooley adds. “It has the most beautiful joinery with bronze and shagreen inlaid. Even now his friends

Better Homes Magazine | DESIGN INSPIRATION come over and are blown away by the thoughtful detailing. “Nasser wanted to surprise his wife with something that was modern and European, yet also fits into the Middle East way of life. In Doha, fashion is a little more cutting edge so he wanted something that was impressive – something that makes you go ‘wow’.” To achieve the high standard of quality Nassar wanted, Pooley’s team sourced everything from Europe – from the marble staircase to the kitchen fittings and all the small finishing touches. However, importing from abroad comes with its own problems that her team had to tackle. Because of the difference in temperature, wood from cooler countries has to acclimatise before it’s used so they had to leave it in the Doha heat for five months. “There’s a lot to think about, like direct sunshine staining fabrics, curtains and wall finishes,” adds the designer. “It was quite funny after we put up a really nice fabric wall in his majlis, about three months

I grew up in Bahrain so I am very familiar with the Middle East

later he came to me and told me it had been done really badly because it was drooping. It turned out he’d turned off the AC. Unfortunately, in that kind of heat you have to be consistent with the temperature. Once he turned it on again, the fabric stiffened like a board. “I also got involved with the architecture and helped with spatial allocation. This is actually our forte; there is no point in having a beautiful house but the loo is downstairs and the guests are being entertaining upstairs, or the shower door opens onto the loo, you have to get it right. Over four years later, Pooley admits that this first Doha project really boosted her company’s international presence. Now they work on more than 12 projects a year, in the city , plus others in Saudi Arabia, UAE, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman. “We are very lucky with all our overseas projects,” she says, “because we are working with very special people, including influential members of royal families all over the world. I love that and they’re always very special to do.” Pooleypooley.com

It comprises over 2,000 villas, with well thought-out floor plans, decent sized living rooms, equipped kitchens, and spacious gardens with high walls that offer privacy. The area is also easy for cabs to access. Jumeirah Park villas boast a remote

Most of the communities’ comprise play areas and open spaces to walk pets, and you are most likely to find children playing outdoors in the evening. The Pavillion Mall, within Jumeirah Park, houses a supermarket, salon, clothing stores, and eateries – you can even get your fix of frozen yoghurt or gluten free food! – so you don’t have to drive out of the community for everyday essentials. If you’re looking to rent, threebedroom villas (approximately 3,0003,600 square feet) are available from Dhs200,000, while five-bedrooms (over 4,500 square feet) are available for an amazing value, starting from Dhs245,000. What sets your educational institution apar t from others in the city ? Clarion School is distinguished by its unique approach to teaching and learning, the progressive education model. The school offers American curriculum, and a rigorous academic environment where each child is known and respected for his/her individual talents. A progressive education model relies on the observation of the child during the lessons to guide him or her to explore a concept, find real examples, analyse, and draw their own conclusions under guided inquiry by trained teachers. This method has been proven to embed knowledge through experience, rather than memorisation. A requirement from our side is that all teachers have to hold a Masters Degree in education, in addition to a four-year university degree. This matches the US standards, to ensure the delivery of the curriculum to the rigorous standard.

Which grade does i t go up until?

At the moment, we will maintain the community school by opening with only Pre-K to Grade 2. Each year group will be limited to 4-year group sections, and limited to 24 students. community of family whose values and ethos match those of the school and progressive education.

Why should a parent enrol their child at your school?

Our values rest on two pillars through which we will deliver a new gold standard in education in the UAE. The first being quality of our pedagogical approach. We nurture intellectual curiosity, reflection and higher order thinking through experiential and meaningful learning and innovative applications of understanding and skills. The second is the quality of our educators.

Before I leave my child in the care of a nanny or babysitter for the first time, is there anything I need to keep in mind, or inform him/her? A. It is really hard to leave your child in the care of another for the first time. Having anxiety is only natural, and

if they are old enough to understand, they will likely be anxious too. No matter what your child’s age, I believe it’s all about reassurance – for them, yourself and the sitter. To help keep that peace of mind, it’s handy to leave a list of contact details for the sitter inclusive of yours/your husband’s phone number, a trusted neighbour’s contact, the details of the security guard, the emergency contact of your preferred hospital, along with general emergency numbers. Finally reassure yourself by getting to know the sitter - the more trust you have, the easier it will be all-round for everyone. Abbey Michelle

Q. With the drop in property prices, I was wondering if now is the right time to buy a house? A. Sales offer prices across Dubai have decreased by 2% in 2015, in contrast to the previous two years where prices increased by 18 and 2% respectively. For many areas it has now become cheaper to service a mortgage than to pay rent. With interest rates now set to start rising, albeit slowly, and the market anticipated to return to growth later this year, it is definitely a great time to buy property in the emirate. Better Homes Magazine | HOUSE

TRIED & TESTED We review the latest gadgets o n t h e m a rk e t

PanaSOn Ic F-VXL95 A look at the large white and grey air-purifier, and you may think it’s a printer at first glance. The touchdisplay buttons soon put any doubts to rest. With functions to remove odours, and dust, a child-lock, timer, and humidity levels, this welldesigned gadget not only does a pretty good job in keeping the air purified, it also works beneficial to your health.

What we like? The user-

friendly purifier doesn’t need much guidance, as the buttons are self-explanatory. Options include using it while doing easy housework, and during a sandstorm – which blows out air with full force, and can be slightly noisy.

LG mOnT b L anc This circular-shaped gold and white gadget is striking, and fits in seamlessly in any room. Tuck it in a corner to benefit from sanitised air all year round.

What we like? One-touch

display buttons allow you to disinfect the air from germs and viruses, smog causing materials, pollen and mould. To indicate the room is clean, the device changes from a bright gold to a pale hue. A triple care filter ensures the air is purified, with features such as the jet clean, ionizer,

and sleep option – all of which are controlled by low, medium, and high fan speed.

What we didn’t like? You

need to keep an eye out on the colour transformation, to check if the air is clean or not. However, this works to an advantage as well as most devices don’t even indicate, and you’re left guessing all along.

To buy: Dhs1,499 at Sharaf DG, Plug Ins, Emax, Jacky’s, and leading hypermarkets. 80 MARCH 2016 | www.bhomes.com

Control the airflow, volume (low, medium, and high), and humidity levels to suit your needs. Operating the gadget doesn’t require reading the manual – thankfully – and all you need to do is fill water into the attachment it comes with. Those with curious little ones can place a child lock on the purifier, to keep them away from disasters.

What we didn’t like? The

gadget is a bit bulky, and while ideal for an office, or villa, it may not be apt for those living in a studio, short on storage solutions.

To buy: Dhs3,999 at leading electronic stores.
