t was wonderful to meet Spanish interior designer and antiques dealer Lorenzo Castillo (page 32) recently at The Odd Piece, where he discussed his eclectic style and revealed his sense of fun. “If you go to New York, an interior designer will have a new book out each year. Well… My [first] book is going to be really, really well done,” he teased. We also chatted with Franco Cappellini of family-run business Cornelio Cappellini, who flew in from Italy to discuss neoclassical style (page 20). If you’re wondering why Italians are widely considered the best furniture makers, Franco revealed that it is not only their long history of it. “There isn’t one company in charge of production from the beginning until the end in our area so it means that there are a lot of artisans, who become very specialised,” he said. We also tour interior designer Emma Hutton’s colourful, relaxed villa in Jumeirah 3 (page 38) and we head to west London (page 44) to explore a mews house that boasts a nightclub, sauna, toast hub and a hat room.

the ceiling light will be the focal point. However, when you choose a neoclassical style, it’s not about choosing a key piece of furniture, lighting or accessory but how you combine the different elements in a unique way. Neoclassical-style pieces
are not easy to combine with other designs. You need to consider colour, for example. A large blue cabinet, for instance, needs to be combined with other neutral-toned main pieces with a splash of blue in the accessories only.

We always try to be as simple and elegant as possible.
Go-to brands
The market in Dubai is large. However, in general we’re a bit conservative when it comes to selecting from a big list of brands. We usually recommend brands or countries of origin for certain items. For example, we always advise our customers to go for Italian brands for ceramics and porcelain, and for mixers we advise going for Hansgrohe, for durability and great design. In many other cases, the brand isn’t the only factor for selection; technical specifications, material used and even production period are the most important factors.
Wallpaper or paint?
In many cases using wallpaper is advisable, especially for kids’ rooms, or in classrooms, where you want to create a sense of joy. In
other locations, such as offices or restaurants, using paint is more suitable for simple, plain colours (usually related to a brand or logo).

Splurge on
In general, spending more on MEP (mechanical, electrical, plumbing) works is very critical in places such as restaurants. In other cases, spending on finishes is more important, which is the case for houses or hotels. Specifically, we advise people to spend more money on floor finishing as floors are the first element, in my opinion, that reflects the real image of the space. Finishes of walls come second and, finally, the ceiling.

Colour combo to try
For elegance and richness, go for earthy colours. For a fresh look, I’d recommend blue, green or even yellow in different shades – these hues create such positive energy and joy. Keep bold colours like red, pink, orange and purple to a minimum.

It’s the most followed design museum in the world on Twitter and its Instagram account isn’t doing too badly either. London’s The Design Museum – which found a new home in Kensington towards the end of last year following a pricy transformation of the listed Commonwealth Institute building – takes an innovative approach to its social media. Numerous posts will make up one full image, video posts reveal design processes and there’s a popular #architecturefriday campaign. “Our Instagram page is experimental, playing with colour, photography, symmetry and emerging digital trends in order to position the museum as an active social-media participant,” enthuses social-media coordinator Sophia Ghonim.

Celebrate the arrival of spring with fun, mix-and-match ideas
Get your Easter hopping with a colourful bouquet table centerpiece and some cheering pastels or a vibrant green-and-white backdrop. There are myriad ways to create and dress your bouquet, from putting a single bright rose in the centre of a bed of lettuce in glass bowls to spray-painting some terracotta pots or crowning a glass jar of chocolate eggs with a pretty posy. Create a place setting with a paper-strip nest egg (a paper shredder will work best) and a decorated egg placed in its centre, or let the napkin ring

be the star of the show. Again, there are endless varieties – make your own with paper rolls, fabric and glue or simply loosely tie a single flower stem to a napkin with ribbon. Ask A designer Our interiors expert solves your queries and shares his hidden gems in the city
John McLennan, founder at Indigo Living I’ve just finished furnishing my rented apartment with some neutral-coloured pieces. I’m keen to add some accessories and colour accents. What colours and accessories do you recommend for an apartment that overlooks the sea but isn’t particularly bright? If you want to bring the light in and brighten up a darker space, a large wall mirror on the wall opposite the windows (or as close as possible) will help to draw in the light and bring in the view. Combine this with some patterned cushions in various shades of blues and aqua (see our beach class cushion range, right). For a final touch, add some accessories in natural materials such as bone or wicker, combined with a flash of silver to bring the room fully to life. Having recently moved, my fiveyear-old son and seven-year-old daughter are keen to style their own bedrooms so I want to give them plenty of creative freedom but would also like to include some practical solutions so they make the most of their space and can tidy up easily. Do you have some suggestions? It is very important to let kids have some freedom of expression in their own spaces so I am glad you are allowing creative freedom for your kids. The thing that will save the day is storage. It has to be fun, safe, easy and accessible. Shelves with baskets that fit on the shelf spaces can bring order and colour to a room. A good desk or even a cabin bed will also bring storage into a child’s room and allow them a space to be creative, as well as provide places to store books and toys. Indigo Living’s cabin bed has a corkboard and blackboard built in, which allows the kids to display
artwork and pictures that can be changed as often as they want to, and also allows them another space to create and draw. Finally, let the kids pick their own bedding colour and style (with a little guidance, of course). My daughter picked hers a while back and still refuses to change them unless she gets to pick again. It’s a wonderful way to see how their design and colour choices change as they grow. I’ve had the same white and grey living room furniture with pink patterned cushions for a few years now. Can you suggest an easy and affordable way for me to upgrade my living space? If you remove the cushions, it is then easy to work with the white and grey furniture. With a neutral colour base, you have a lot of choice. You could stay with the pink theme, which is ontrend. Muted florals and dusky pinks create sophisticated elegance; or for a more urban feel, try bringing in some midnight blues or soft greys in velvet to create warmth.

The rule breaker
Spanish interior designer Lorenzo Castillo’s approach might be unconventional but he knows how to mix old and new Interview: Lucy Land From the King of Spain to the King of Jordan, Lorenzo Castillo’s client list reads like a who’s who. This year alone, he’s working on numerous hotels, including Shangri-La Hotels (in Hong Kong and Singapore); Cartier boutiques; and his first book as well as the homes of his private clients. We meet one of Spain’s best-dressed men (so says GQ España) at The Odd Piece, during the launch of his design collaboration with The Rug Company… Tell us about your new designs for The Rug Company… I wanted the rugs to be very useable so you can use the same rug in a very classic space with antiques and chandeliers or in a contemporary one with very white walls and neutral, white furniture. Where do you get your inspiration for the designs? Architecture. I like Renaissance, Baroque, 16th and 17th-century Spanish architecture because I think buildings from these periods look very modern. For example, the geometric pattern in my designs comes from the marble floors in 17th century interiors. I live in the centre of Madrid and I like to walk around where the façades are full of details – amazing. They inspire my wallpaper and my fabric designs. And what inspires your choice of colour? The location is very important. But I don’t like the rule that you have to use blue and white in a summerhouse. I’m currently working on a big project in the Dominican Republic, but it won’t have the typical coral stone and blue-and-white stripes of most homes there. The light is very strong in the Dominican Republic so I want to use strong, warm colours. Similarly, why use green in a country house when you’re already surrounded by greenery? Why not orange, which is warm, cosy and beautiful? What interiors advice would you give to those of us living in new buildings in the UAE? If you have a big villa with a garden, then you don’t have a problem – you can do whatever you like and include lots of richness. However, for those living in newly built apartments, especially with low ceilings, I would suggest using neutral colours and styles to create a calm space. Add a few select antique pieces, and some large-scale modern art – that’s a fresh and beautiful mix.

What are your style rules? I would like to give you a magic recipe but there really aren’t any hard-and-fast rules. My advice would be to follow your instinct. You can mix as many fabrics and patterns as you wish but I would recommend you stick to one palette of colours. If you’re using green and white, for example, just use green and white – don’t mix that palette with red or with other colours. And in terms of furniture, styles, you can mix whatever you want but always follow the idea of harmony or balance – that’s very important. What’s your favourite design era? I like Spanish decorative arts from the 17th century to the 20th-century. I like the very masculine style – furniture with simple lines – of the 17th-century; but I also like the 18th-century, especially French and Swedish design, which is more feminine and works well for the countryside. I also really love midcentury design because it’s perfect for refreshing and updating every interior. I really enjoy mixing modern and classic. What tips would you give to someone who usually sticks to one style? I think it’s boring to stick to one style. When you’re using just one style, you are very strict and focused on one thing only, which is limiting. While studying for my degree in history of art I fell in love with different things, from Egyptian and Roman works to 20th century art, including Picasso. These reflect the riches of life. Why focus on one thing when you can be open to the entire world? How important are rugs to an interior? Interiors are like a box formed by the ceiling, walls and the rugs. The rugs, especially if you have a plain floor such as a white marble floor, are as important as the ceiling or the walls because they unify the space. What is the most important thing to get right in a home? Comfort. Which is even more important than aesthetics. But I always tell my clients that you can have both. nown for creating contemporary homes ranging from open-plan, light-filled city warehouse conversions to fine country retreats, Claire and Ian Hogarth of Hogarth Architects spent 15 years searching for their personal dream site, which they eventually found in a West Kensington mews, London. “Because it took so long to find the location for our family home, every member of the family was allowed to state their ‘desert island’ request for the new property,” Ian reveals. The choices were pretty unique and resulted in a colourful house, featuring a nightclub, sauna, hat room and toast hub. “The dance floor was Claire’s request, which luckily paired with our son Gil’s choice of a DJ booth.” The 2,800 sq. ft. family house was built on an empty piece of wasteland so they had a blank canvas to begin with. How did the colour injection come about? “We started with white internally albeit with colour-change lighting,” Ian explains. “We have layered the colours bit by bit since we moved in.” Perhaps influenced by Mexican architect Luis Barrag n, pink is a favourite of Hogarth Architects, and was used extensively throughout the property, while the lilac and purple applied to the rear exterior house and garden walls were intended to lift and brighten the Victorian brickwalled garden. What advise would Ian give others on choosing colour? “Be brave – life is too short for magnolia,” he smiles.

As the house was entirely new, major structural engineering works were carried out to form the space. “The basement was particularly challenging,” Ian concedes. Once the house structure was planned, the couple wrote a brief for each room before including it in the overall plan. “We wanted a series of different vibes throughout the house,” Ian says simply. The resulting rooms include a celebratory-style family living room located in the basement – a colourful seating ‘pit’ is arranged in front of a movie screen while a light box by the artist Simon Tyszko bears the message, “I just can’t take it any more” – and an all-white bedroom offers a soothing contrast. The dance floor, also located in the basement is, arguably, the most talked-about space. “The idea for the dance floor came about because I love dancing, but I’m too old,” Claire says. “Claire likes to start her evening at 8pm and be in bed by 1am,” Ian teases. “However, our parties got so popular that Claire now runs her own over40s disco night in a west London club.” The couple looked at a selection of dance floors, but their final choice was driven by price and the couple imported one from China. There hasn’t been any scrimping on style, though: the full-scale dance floor is embedded with thousands of tiny pulsing lights while the professional-standard DJ booth and a sound system were purchased from a nightclub in Birmingham. “I previously hired sound equipment to groups for a while as a job, so I got my old partner in to set up the sound system,” Ian says.

Every family member was allowed to state their ‘desert island’ request for the property The sense of play extends to the hat library, built by Ian to house his wife’s collection. “Claire isn’t the tallest person so she loves wearing hats to stand out. I built the library so she can choose from her collection at a glance,” Ian says, affectionately. Claire owns more than 50 hats and she has, on average, two made each year by her favourite milliner, Jess Collett. With all the party vibes, it would be easy to mistake the ‘toast hub’ for a location to raise a celebratory glass, but it’s actually a practical garage for appliances. “We can close its doors to hide mixers, toasters and other appliances,” Ian explains. “Some people take this further and have an entire walk-in room for these smellier functions.” So what advice does Ian have for anyone else taking on a whole property? “Every job is different, but I always advise clients to write down how they live and how they would like to live as a starting point,” he says. “We also encourage thinking about the future in regards to changing family circumstances.” Very practical indeed. bhomes.com | 43

here’s a villa in Jumeirah 3 that is affectionately known as Hotel Hutton by its regular guests – friends and family of interior designer Emma Hutton. On arrival, visitors are greeted by permanent resident Chase, a boisterous French bulldog, who shares his home with Emma, her property lawyer husband Scott and their two children, Cooper and Harrison. The spacious hallway is scented with Dr Vranjes reed diffusers and fresh lilies, which adorn the large marble Saarinen table along with framed family photos, candles and a vase of white tulips, while the walls are decorated with artworks chosen on family trips and there’s a fun bar located under the spiral marble staircase. Books, left by guests and family, line the windowsills surrounding the staircase. The home’s wonderful blend of sophistication and liveability can be attributed to Emma’s lifelong passion for interiors. “I was always moving things around and fixing things even as a child,” she enthuses. “I remember placing dried flowers on folded towels when I was younger.” Originally from Ireland, Emma developed a career in interior design, working with the likes of Helen Turkington in Dublin and the UK on private and commercial projects prior to moving to Dubai nine years ago. She’s seen a lot of change since her arrival. “I've found that more people are staying in Dubai for longer so are buying villas instead of renting. I think that has led to more people making further effort to make their villas look homely.”

The other big change that Emma is pleased to note is the growth of bespoke companies creating home accessories such as artworks and rugs. “There’s a lady who works for herself and gets all her wonderful handmade rugs from India (her company is called From Jaipur With Love). If you want something different or you want something custom-made, you really have to get out of the malls and find it but Dubai is definitely growing in that area, which is brilliant,” she says. “Interior design has changed massively since I arrived and I think there’s a lot more to come.” For her clients’ and her own home, Emma will start with a piece of artwork or a cushion she loves and build on that when choosing the colour scheme. Sitting in one of her favourite rooms, her home office, she nods towards the sofa. “It was plain grey before I got it re-covered. The painting above it inspired the pink piping.” The most arresting artwork in the office is a large black-and-white painting of a girl’s face with a pink graphic butterfly over her mouth and lower face. “Some people thought I was a bit crazy choosing it; that it looked a bit like something from The Silence Of The Lambs, but I love the striking colour.” Emma’s goto colours are pink and mustard – the large artwork in the hall features a lady wearing a mustardyellow dress – though she doesn’t have any rules for colour combinations. “Even when it comes to fashion, I like to mix navy with black, and grey with cream, which some people still say are no-nos.”

Interior design has changed massively since I arrived in Dubai and I think there is a lot more to come She doesn’t stick to particular styles, trends or periods either. “If I’m drawn to something, that’s it – I’ll make it work in my house,” she says. “I don’t need to be really trendy or up to date; it’s just whatever works.” Her style has evolved since her move to Dubai, however. “When I was in Ireland, our house was very neutral and now I have a lot more colour. I wonder if living in the sunshine allows you to be more creative,” she ponders. Emma spends most of her time in the home office. Her children will join her at the desk to do their homework. “This is where I’ll do personal stuff such as holiday bookings and the kids’ school work as well as my own work.” Evenings are spent relaxing in the living room and, weather permitting, weekends are spent in the garden. Before moving into their villa, Emma brought her husband to see the property. “The outside was completely barren except for two big trees, the hall was painted bright blue, the staircase was a vivid red and another room was yellow. Scott thought we couldn’t possibly live here. ‘I trust your judgment but it had better work as we’re not moving
anywhere again,’ he teased. I had the interior painted grey so we could start with a blank canvas.” The kitchen previously featured random tiles. “Scott said, ‘Look at this hideous thing the last people left’ – he was referring to a Manuel Canovas blind that I had fitted,” she laughs. She spraypainted some old wooden chairs bright blue and yellow and added blackboard paint below the cupboards, hung sunhats on another wall and had a family photo blown up into a canvas to create a tongue-in-cheek shabby-chic vibe. “When Scott saw the finished look he said, ‘I get it now.’” Scott appreciates his wife’s easy style. “He loves the fact that I go a bit mad on the house and everything’s a bit more colourful than most people’s taste,” Emma reveals. “Our home is relaxed, which is what he wants.” With its whimsical artworks and clever colour combinations, which have resulted in a cosy yet refined style, the Huttons’ home is certainly inviting. Sizes range from 450 sq. ft. to 560 sq. ft. for a studio; 600 sq. ft. to 1,150 sq. ft. for a one-bedroom property; 1,200 sq. ft. to 1,600 sq. ft. for a two-bedroom; 1,600 sq. ft. to 3,800 sq. ft. for a three-bedroom; and 2,000 sq. ft. to 4,500 sq. ft. for a four-bedroom property. It’s easy to get around Downtown. Taxis can be found almost anywhere and many are available in dedicated areas attached to The Dubai Mall, while the metro is accessible from The Dubai Mall travelator, which takes you directly to the station via an airconditioned walkway. There are also plenty of facilities in Downtown. The closest school is GEMS Wellington Primary School, which is located behind the Shangri-La Hotel on Sheikh Zayed Road and offers the International Baccalaureate. There are also several nurseries in Downtown, including Blossom Downtown Nursery Dubai in Yansoon 7 in the Old Town, and Babilou Downtown Nursery in 8 Boulevard Walk. Downtown is getting even better all the time. The Dubai Mall extension is now in full swing and more parking has been added across from the mall. The San Francisco-style Dubai Trolley will be extended around Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Boulevard and The Opera District will likely be the best in the world when it is fully completed.
