DESIGN ST YLE
i would say it is modern but relaxed and comfortable, with big sofas neutral and predominate colours with bright colours for the smaller details like cushions and rugs. i search for shapes that are aesthetically elegant.
MOST PRIZED POSSESION
i love art and have beautiful paintings and photography. My other love is technology so my home theatre from Platinum Vision is probably the biggest expense. We have a fantastic 7.1 surround system with a drop down projection.
INSPIRATIONAL ROOM
My living cum dining room is the biggest open plan space in the home. it’s bright and airy with beautiful colonial shutters and looks over the swimming pool, out to the golf course. i am lucky enough to be given ample modular and stylistic choices and various finishes for chairs and sofas, tables, cupboards and bookcases.
RUG SHOPPING
My favorite place is edition Bougainville. They have an amazing collection of wool and silk rugs, from contemporary to classical. When and if in london, visit to luke Urwin on Pimlico Road.
WALLPAPER OR PAINT ?
Por cel ai n candl e hol der, Dhs1,145 at 2XL
i love the combination of wallpaper and paint in a room just as a detail wall to break up the paint and give depth.
COLOUR COMBINATION
i prefer soft colours, such as beige and taupe but also like to mix pastel colours such as light blue, aqua green or creamy yellow.
DÉCOR TIPS
finishes such as wood, matt and shiny surfaces create a juxtaposition that will surprise you daily. for example, the combination of a knotty honey oak found in the tall units of the kitchen can be combined with a work surface made with a white marble worktop, lending both strength and sparkle.
Lamp, Dhs285 at Zara Home
@designlovefest in between snapshots of pink bouquets, picturesque sceneries from travels and gorgeous summer outfits, Bri emery’s feed boasts interior settings she comes across daily. The rooms are unusual shots with elements that may be new to some. expect feathered walls, plush beds you’d like to dive into, and pastel colours that are instantly loveable.

ocated in Cluster M is this spacious two bedroom apartment flooded with sunlight that is home to Lama Nehme, her husband, two children below the age of five and her nanny. Glamorous Lama spends her days at the studio, producing and presenting the morning show ‘Sabah Al Kheir ya Arab’ on MBC1, and a fitness segment called Khalik fit – translates to ‘stay fit” – before picking up her little girl from school, who is chatty enough to tell us the living room is her favourite spot in the house as she gets to watch YouTube videos while dancing along freely. Lama’s interiors were carefully curated with Nisrine El Lababidi Moghraby, Creative Director of Harf Noon Design Studio, to create a Scandinavian style home complete with white, grey and green interiors, a concrete looking wall clad with wallpaper complete with art and wooden pieces that are near and dear to Lama. The home enters into the living and dining space, foyer on the right with

family photos adorning the walls, a bench from West Elm and a rug that exudes a casual homely vibe. “I tried to make it fresh and wide by choosing neutral colours. The flat was bright when we first saw it two years ago and that’s why these colours were a great choice. Nisrine knew what I wanted and translated it through design,” says Lama. The couple previously lived at another cluster in Jumeirah Lake Towers and love the location as it is close to Lama’s workplace in Dubai Media City, her daughter’s school and of course shopping malls. When the couple moved in, they brought along three pieces from which the interiors were then designed around - the couch from BO Concept, and the dining table and chairs. The living space boasts a mix of high and mid-range items fusing an Ikea TV unit with a coffee table from Mood and accessories from ACE, West Elm, Marina Home and The Bowery Company - Lama’s favourite haunts for home décor. The dining table adds a lovely pop of colour with mustard yellow dining chairs

complemented by frames that Nisrine customised and Lama framed. The pair are quite the DIY experts, with leather handle shelves placed near the TV made by the duo. “I chose a men’s belt from H&M, went to Satwa to make holes in it and then screwed it together with shelves from ACE. The total cost was around Dhs400 as opposed to options I saw online for Dhs800,” she says. This isn’t the only DIY in the house. Lama has converted a keepsake from her daughter’s christening to an artsy green element. “My husband has been telling me to get rid of the cage for five years, but I got plants from ACE to place inside and now it sits in a corner of the living room floor. I love it so much,” she says.
Since Lama is sponsored by Nike and hosts a fitness show, a little alcove near the living room wall has been converted into a closet for her workout gear. This is hidden by a beaded curtain to fit seamlessly with the setting. The children’s bedroom boasts blue and pink colours, a bunk bed that Lama bought from Dragon Mart due to its great quality, and an organ that her daughter plays Happy Birthday on to enlighten guests and her baby brother. The adult bedroom is yet to be designed and Lama’s vision is along the lines of the living room decor, however her trust has been fully placed into Nisrine’s hands to create a relaxing zone for her and her husband.

How-to: BE ECO-FRIENDLY AT HOME N if ty ide a s to p u t you r ski lls to the test
saVE ENE RgY
Switch from incandescent bulbs to compact fluorescent bulbs, which use a quarter of the electricity. They also last ten times longer than the regular kind. Be sure to install movement sensors so lights are activated only when you are in the room. The refrigerator and freezer are the biggest energy consumers in a home. Check that your fridge cools efficiently at 37F and always set the freezer at -3.F. Leaving the fridge and freezer doors open for long consumes energy too.
PuR IF Y t H E a I R
Live plants act as natural air filters and some even absorb harmful pollutants emitted from carpets, furniture and electronic equipment. Fill your home with spider plants, Boston ferns or palm trees on the terrace. You can also install
an air purifier to get rid of harmful bacteria and pollutants.
tO ss tOX I C PRO DuCts
Skip cleaning products and use micro fibre cloths instead. When used damp, it attracts dirt on its own and cleans most surfaces including glass, stainless steel, brass, wood, and ceramics. Wash the cloth after every use and reuse multiple times.
P L a Nt ED I B LE
While the climate isn’t favourable for most of us, it works wonders on certain herbs and vegetables. Through summer you can grow tomatoes, chillies, capsicums, okra, and aubergines. Fill your kitchen counter with herb pots such as basil, mint and pluck and use as and when required. To enhance the soils nutrition, make your own compost with matter from the bin – egg shelves,

tealeaves, coffee grounds, and fruit and vegetable peelings. Always make sure to water your garden early in the morning, or late evening, as water evaporates slower when the temperatures drop.
REusE a N D RECYCL E
Ditch disposable plastic or paper items for reusable ones. When buying items, look for those that are packaged in recycled cardboard – cereal and food – and reuse plastic or paper if possible. Cardboard can be converted into a spaceship, robot or dollhouse for children and makes a great DIY activity. Donate used toys to charity and books to the local library or café.
CON sERVE WatER
When doing the dishes, don’t leave water running through the faucet. Fill one side of a double sink with water, or use a tub for rinsing.

The Gioconda Design offers a scheme that can be customised to suit just about any kitchen. The attractive special door structure with soft lines and modular unit makes the kitchen seem like one from a movie set with a constant subtle glow. Use the kitchen island as a spot to socialise, knead dough, and/or cook
with the children. The mainstay of the kitchen is the cooking area, which evokes the classical idea of a fireplace. Stylish decoration of the surroundings above the cooking area holds two lateral supports under a steel hood and these are available in different sizes, featuring a sleek and exclusive design.

The Marina kitchen scheme is stylish, refined and minimalistic. The integration of a breakfast bar that doubles as a space for children to do their homework, or a chat, makes the setting casual and homely. Hues of grey with pops of colours from accessories and paint/ wallpaper add texture to the space.
MIELE
Take the hassle out of cooking with the Miele TempControl. The recently launched induction hob unit offers a sustained temperature maintained by sensors embedded in the ceramic screen, to prevent food from burning. These sensors detect the characteristics of the material and temperature of the pan to then regulate the power automatically to ensure that food is subjected to a uniform and constant temperature, irrespective of whether the pan lid is fitted or not. The best part is, TempControl can be used with any pots or pans suitable for induction cooking. The 2in1 appliance line from the brand is also a great range. These appliances save space, time and money. The DGM for example is a steam and microwave oven, the BM is a microwave combination oven, while the DGC offers steam combination ovens, so pick one that best suits your lifestyle.

f there’s a place some of us may hardly ever look to for interior inspiration it’s most likely an island. Luckily in the UAE, having the beach at our doorsteps and a private pool in the backyard doesn’t sound extremely bizarre. A nautical vibe is probably the most ocean-themed our homes may appear, however with carefully curated items picked up on travels or imported, transforming your home to an island-style villa isn’t a cumbersome task. Who better to look to than The Sun Siyam Hotels & Resorts, winner of the Maldives’ Leading Family Resort for a home suitable not just for families, but couples and singles too. “The décor is international, exuding a homely feel, with touches of Maldivian décor such as the ceiling panel,” says Abdulla Thamheed, Group General
Manager, The Sun Siyam Hotels & Resorts. Most traditional Maldivian homes comprise wooden ceiling panels as they offer great acoustics and can be used to cover plumbing or elements of the home that are best left unseen. Ceiling fans are also quite popular in the country due to its year-round tropical climate, offering an eco-friendly route to those who want to incorporate environmentally friendly options. Colours prevalent in most homes are cream and black, while the setting is kept natural and calm with earthy colours. “These tones were chosen in particular for the resort too, as they give a neutral backdrop that blends well with the tropical environment, ie, the green foliage, the white sand and the blue sea of the island,” he says. Tucked away towards one corner is a day bed, typical to Maldivian homes again, that serves as a great reading nook, or a place for children to play and do their homework. Outdoors naturally boasts a private swimming pool as do most resorts, however, the addition of a regal swing with plush cushions offers a fun element to an otherwise conventional space. “The outdoor swings have been installed to give a traditional touch to the décor as the swing or ‘Undhoali’ is a typical type of furniture seen in traditional Maldivian houses,” says Abdulla. Greenery brings the setting to life while keeping it cooler as it enhances the surroundings. Choose from coconut

Mycity Alexandra Vovchenko, owner of Vesna R estaurant & Lounge reveals her go - to spots in the city
THE AREA YOU CALL HOME ?
Downtown, the Address residences to be precise. Since i moved to Dubai i have been with Address - first Dubai Mall, then in Downtown, due to the fire that took place last year. i did look around for other options, however i’m now used to the Address family, location and their efficient system.
WHY THIS AREA?
i like to live where the buzz is. Downtown is definitely the most vibrant part of Dubai, plus all the main attractions are located here, Dubai Mall, Burj Khalifa, to name a few. i have easy access to the best restaurants and i can’t imagine myself living in any other place. i’m a hundred percent downtown girl.
FOR MEETINGS AND COFFEE… i like La Serre Boulangerie as it’s very close to where i live, they have an amazing terrace, relaxing atmosphere and delicious snacks and desserts.
FAVOURITE TAKEOUT
i’ve got quite the sweet tooth and consider my self a big-time sweet lover. i have two go-to ice cream shops from which i order all the time - Movenpick on Emaar Boulevard and Marble Slab creamery in MOE - they have incredibly soft ice cream and extras that you can mix according to your taste. i’m also a huge fan of Japanese bakery yamanote Atelier, Ladurée and Pierre Hermé macarons.
BRUNCH WITH FRIENDS
i love coya - the ambience is great and food is light and exceptionally tasty. it’s one of the few places where you can eat a lot for brunch but still feel good and light afterwards.

INDULGE AT
My own restaurant Vesna. One of the reasons i opened it is because there aren’t any decent options that offer homelike Slavic food in Dubai.
CASUAL DINING
i like very casual but super delicious spots like cocoa Room for breakfast and Slider Station in Galleria Mall. clinton Street Baking company serves simple but amazingly delicious food. there is an amazing new French bakery at St Regis Dubai which i also highly recommend.
BEST DUBAI AT TRACTION
i’m an adrenaline junkie and apart from all the famous touristic attractions like Burj Khalifa, safaris and water parks, my favourite and by far the most exciting one is Sky Dive Dubai. this type of experience is definitely incomparable with any other attraction here.
HOME SHOPPING
i really like the selection at Bloomingdales-Home Dubai’s home department. i always pop in there when i need something urgent. there’s an amazing showroom on Sheikh Zayed Road called Darwazeh Living, which matches my style. if i need something very practical, yet neutral and modern i go to Muji - Japanese store, where you

EMS training centre. it’s a 20-minute workout per week, which makes all your muscles work to their maximum efficiency simultaneously. i used to attend the studio in JLt before and had amazing results, however i have now found a new studio in Business Bay Body time fitness and i’m currently having my EMS sessions there.
CL ASSES AROUND TOWN
i regularly attend vocal classes at the Star School in Mirdiff. there’s an incredible vocal coach there named Lisa Hugo and i have been taking these since i moved to Dubai.
CELEBRATORY DINNERS ARE HELD AT...
Enigma, Palazzo Versace Dubai. i love this restaurant as it’s the world’s first restaurant to alternate its’ dining concept and world-class chefs four times a year. i find this very unique for Dubai. you really don’t know what to expect as you can’t choose the menu, however you leave completely impressed by the taste and presentation of every single dish that comes to your table. A must-try dining experience.

What sets your educational institution apar t from others in the city ? Repton is very distinctive in that it is a truly international school whilst being proudly affiliated to Repton UK, an independent school with a 450-year pedigree of academic and all round excellence. We share the key parts of their British educational DNA including uniquely boarding houses for senior school pupils, whilst adapting to the environment of the UAE.
Why should a parent enroll their child at your school?
If you want your child to benefit from the best of international education rooted in British Independent schooling, Repton should be your choice. We are well established and focus on excellent teaching and learning of the English Curriculum, IGCSE’s and IB. This with our strong pastoral system means we play a key role in assisting our pupils to the next stage of their educational journey whatever that might be, whether top universities such as Oxford or UCLA, or schools such as Harrow, Eton and Westminster.
What spor t and activity facilities are on offer ?
We are exceptionally fortunate to have one of the largest campuses in Dubai,

which enables us to offer a huge range of sporting and other activities. Our Repton heritage is that we offer a holistic education and value, arts, music, outdoor education, activities and sport as being key to development of well-balanced and successful children.
canteen food plays a vital role in a school ’s system. Does the school promote healthy eating habits through the food that is ser ved?
Yes, we know that it is essential to provide a healthy and attractive food offering. The menus are drawn up in consultation with the Pupils food committees, boarding pupils and the school doctor. We are distinctive in that we employ our own full time and extremely experienced executive chef who plays a key role in daily monitoring the caterers, menus, food quality and presentation in the school dining room and student cafés.

Household or c o m m u n i t y d i l e m m a? Our skilled panel is here to help Q. My husband and I love dining out, however now that we have a sixmonth old baby we get out less often. Could you please recommend a few good restaurants in Dubai that are baby-friendly and not tucked away in a shopping mall? A. Most Dubai restaurants welcome families and babies so, when choosing a place to eat out with a baby, I would look for a restaurant that will make your dining experience more enjoyable. The priority will be somewhere with enough space for your buggy and that will allow both parents to eat their meal while it is still warm and not worry about a crying baby offending other diners. I find buffets tend to be a good option for this and there are lots of nice buffet restaurants in Dubai’s hotels in some great settings. Dining at Kaleidoscope at Atlantis will let you and baby enjoy the

As they get older, having kids entertainment on hand becomes helpful. For toddlers, and when it’s too hot outside, pick restaurants with indoor play areas like Jones the Grocer at Etihad Travel Mall, Lime Tree Cafe in Jumeirah or the Saturday Kids brunch at Fumé, Pier 7. For slightly older kids, West 14th on the Palm has access to a supervised kids club where they can be entertained while you dine and both Reform Social at the Lakes Club and the Links at the Montgomerie Golf Club have playgrounds near the restaurant. Harkee Wilson Q. I recently moved to Dubai with my wife and we are in a hotel apartment, however, I would like to move to an area I can later invest in, that is quiet yet packed with restaurants nearby. Could you
please suggest a couple of different locations that are suitable? A. For investors looking to buy properties, in order to lease them to tenants, a number of factors should be considered, such as rental yields and return on investment. Search trends show that an increasing number of tenants are moving away from central areas into more affordable neighbourhoods. People are leaving areas that are premium and mid-income such as Downtown, The Palm, Dubai Marina, The Greens, Dubai Sport City, Discovery Gardens, Dubai Silicon Oasis or JVC . However if you are an end-user areas like JBR and Dubai Marina will suit you the best in case you are looking for a bright and active community lifestyle. The Walk JBR and the Marina walk offer the best variety of restaurants from Arabic cuisine to Italian, Chinese, to Russian and so on. Most of the social activities also happen within these two areas. Extra detergent and fabric softener can be added in at any point during the wash cycle too. All you have to do is push the pause button and the door opens wide enough to shove a pair of jeans in. TRIED & TESTED We review the latest gadget o n t h e m a rk e t
A ARDEE STonE kET Tl E Sometimes a kettle that does its job of heating up efficiently is all we really need. This Stone Kettle is stylish, cordless and made of food grade ceramic metal.
What we like?
We will admit we had never heard of a Stone kettle before reviewing this, so the element of intrigue was definitely one of the factors in choosing it. The 1.2 litre jug does take a bit of time to heat up initially, however the results are long lasting and it keeps water warm for hours after too.
What we didn’t like?
It can get a little hot on the exterior, so it’s definitely a gadget to keep away from children.
