Abu Dhabi City District Considered to be one of the richest cities in the world, Abu Dhabi is a cosmopolitan metropolis and a major cultural and commercial centre due to its position as the capital. The city offers a strikingly contrasting landscape, from sandy beaches and skyscrapers to rolling desert dunes. Joined to the mainland by the Maqta and Mussafah bridges, some of the key suburbs in the city include Khalifa, Electra, Hamdan, Mussafah (residential and industrial) and the beautiful waterfront Corniche. The emirate also consists of the eastern oasis of Al Ain, better known as the Green City. For the Gøtterup family, moving to a villa on Saadiyat Island offered the perfect combination of great location and generous space to create a home. Poul, Victoria, and their young daughter NinaNicole moved to Saadiyat Beach Villas in September of last year, and already they’re enjoying the change of pace after life in the city centre: “We moved from the Corniche,” says Poul, “so it’s nice to be somewhere that’s more tranquil, more family-friendly.” For Victoria, the area’s landscaped greenery was an immediate draw: “We wanted Nina-Nicole to be able to run around outside. We used to live next to a wonderful park, but it was difficult to use it because we had to cross two very busy roads. The greenery is fantastic, though – my little girl can have fresh air at last.” The family have spent most of their weekends since the move settling in to
‘It’s nice to be somewhere that’s more tranquil, more family-friendly’ the property, and have high hopes for the development’s future: “It looks like it will be a very family-friendly area,” says Poul. “There are villas with swimming pools, playgrounds, the clubhouse that’s being built – we are hoping that it will all attract other young families. It is a safe, quiet area, and the security is brilliant too.” The Gøtterups chose their house carefully, opting for an end-of-terrace property and a large 200-square-metre garden. “It really is a blank slate,” says Victoria. “We’re thinking about putting in a pool, patio and grassed area – it’s a great size for us. I’m keeping a mood book for inspiration.” The beach is a mere 15-minute walk away too, perfect for sunny weekends and long sunset strolls. “It’s a very natural beach,” says Victoria, “and so beautiful.

The water is azure – it feels like you’re in the Seychelles or the Maldives.” “The area is much quieter than the Corniche, but it’s still close to all the places we love,” says Victoria. “Abu Dhabi is a wonderful place for us as a family – we go to the ballet, to the theatre. Art and culture are very important, and we sometimes venture to Dubai for entertainment too.” For Victoria, an art critic, the proximity to Manarat al Saadiyat exhibition centre is perfect. “In November, it held Abu Dhabi Art,” says Victoria, “and the galleries on Saadiyat Island will be fantastic when they’re finished. I don’t drive, but this is a good place for taking taxis, and I love to feel close to the life of the city.” “We looked at a few villas in some other developments,” admits Poul, “but they were much more remote. I don’t want Victoria to feel cut off because she’s reliant on taxis, and you don’t get that feeling of isolation here. We’re close to the motorway, but we can hardly hear it at all.” January 2013

‘This is a very impressive house, with a wonderful master bedroom’ The interior décor is “a work in progress” says Victoria, but it already feels homely. “The things we have now are more suited to an apartment, so we’d like to buy lots of new furniture,” she says. “I’m thinking about antique pieces, with a classical Mediterranean style. I like to shop at places like Marina and THE One – we’ll be starting in the dining room, to make it fit with the more rustic theme.” The couple love to host guests – “We have a full schedule of visitors until April”, says Poul with a grin – and the new villa has plenty of space to accommodate them. “It never feels cramped,” he continues, “and the en suite guest room feels just like a hotel room.” The villa’s layout is perfect for day-to-day life too, and the family are enjoying the extra space. “There’s room for Nina-Nicole to run about in, and Victoria has her own walk-in closet,” says Poul. “We also have space for parking, which we didn’t have on the Corniche – so that’s a real luxury. It’s a very well-designed property, and we love that the kitchen is separate from the living area – we like to close the kitchen up when we’re entertaining. It’s a very impressive house, with a wonderful master bedroom.” For Victoria, it’s the natural light that steals the show: “The windows at the side of the house really let the light in, which is brilliant. We also see the sunrise from the bedroom – that’s priceless, I love it.” January 2013

This 27 square-kilometre development by TDIC is Abu Dhabi’s flagship real estate project, which when finished will comprise of residential, leisure and sporting facilities galore. There are plenty of options to rent, lease-to-own and buy on the two completed residential areas: Saadiyat Beach Residences and The Residences at the St Regis Saadiyat Island Resort. Both villas and apartments are available, with a strong focus on family homes and luxurious beach-side living. Be quick, though: as the development continues and the range of amenities grows, expect interest in the area to rocket.
The private natural beaches are the crowning attraction of the island, and many properties are within walking distance of the coast. If you’re after a swanky day out, head to Monte Carlo Beach Club for dune-side cabanas, gourmet restaurants, and a kids’ club that will keep little ones entertained for hours. Saadiyat Island Golf Club is handily-placed for a picturesque turn on the greens, and beginners can hone their skills at the onsite academy before heading onto the Gary Player-designed course. When completed, the island will also boast the Louvre Abu Dhabi, Guggenheim Abu Dhabi and Zayed National Museum.
There isn’t a lot of choice for shopping nearby, but a large retail complex is planned for later this year. When finished, it will include a supermarket, ATM, laundry facilities and salons. In the meantime, the island’s road links put facilites within easy reach. You’ll find dining options galore in the St Regis Saadiyat Island Resort, with everything from the hotel’s iconic afternoon tea to gourmet Thai cuisine at Sontaya (grab a beachside table for glittering sea views). Fanr, a new addition to Manarat Al Saadiyat, is a favourite among locals for leisurely breakfasts and lunches while gallery-hopping.
Saadiyat Island is a truly family-friendly area, but as yet it doesn’t have any schools or nurseries to its name. Excellent options can be found just a short drive away, however, with a choice of curriculums on offer. The Pearl Primary School (British curriculum, pearlprimary.sch.ae) is great for younger kiddies, and Our Own English High School, Abu Dhabi (British curriculum, gemsoo-abudhabi.com) caters for kindergarten to secondary school levels. The prestigious Dubai-based Repton School (British curriculum, reptondubai. org) is set to open a new campus in Abu Dhabi later this year too.
