Back inside, the living space downstairs includes a separate family room at the front of the house and a great-sized living area and dining room at the back, both of which open out to the pool. We love this place…
Palm Jumeirah
Yasmin and Reeyaz Moosa show us inside their Palm villa and reveal why they fell in love with the glamorous, beachside retreat. Yasmin, tell us why you decided to leave life in the UK behind for Dubai. We’ve been living here for nearly 12 years, now. We first came to Dubai on holiday around 14 years ago and just fell in love with the place! Within six months we’d decided we wanted to live here permanently and so we came back and set up our own business: we now have a group of companies and, of course, a huge benefit is that it’s tax free here. We now have a much better lifestyle for our daughters, too; Sophia, Xsara and Safirah. What was it that drew you to the Palm? We came here because we wanted a beach home (in addition to our main home) so
the private stretches of beach you get along the fronds really appealed. So much so we ended up living here full-time. I just love being around the sea and it’s just wonderful having the sand and sea literally a step outside your back door. How about the villa itself, what elements of the property really sold it to you? I must have looked at around 50 villas on the Palm, including a lot of signature villas, which are larger. But, there was just something about this one that made me want it straight away! I loved the flow of it; it really works as a family home. This is a garden villa, which are normally 5,000 square feet in size, but this specific villa
is around 6,000 and also has a third floor. There’s much more of a focus on the living room spaces here too, rather than having enormous hallways, as in the signature types. When it came to location, each frond has a different view but I chose this side as it’s quieter. People come and rake the beach too, so it always looks perfect. What are the everyday facilities like here? I head to Milk&Honey by the Shoreline apartments, which is a little gourmet supermarket that’s just delicious! For bigger grocery shops, I’ll head to Spinneys in The Meadows. That is one thing that’s lacking here at the moment; a large supermarket, but a big Waitrose is

‘While it’s quieter at the front of the street, at the back, on the beach, people take their children and there’s so much activity come the weekend’ set to open next year on the Golden Mile which will be fantastic. There seems to be no let up in the opening of new eateries on the Palm. Where are your favourite spots? Rayeez and I are big fans of Nobu at the Atlantis on the Palm, so we’re regulars there. We tend to eat out at the hotels rather than restaurants here, such as the Royal Mirage and Jumeirah Beach Hotel. I’ve also heard that West 14th Bar & Grill, a new steak restaurant has recently opened here so we‘re going to try that out this week. With the girls we tend to go to more casual spots on the Shoreline, such as Cabanas, as they’re so child-friendly. It’s definitely a coveted location to live, but is there much of a community feel? We create a community here! I’m December 2010
definitely the instigator on our frond – for Halloween I dropped leaflets through my neighbours doors and everybody got in the spirit and met up and did trick or treating, it was fab, such a nice atmosphere. Although there are both couples and families living here I do think it’s a fantastic place for those people that do have children. While it’s quieter at the front of the street, at the back, on the beach, people take their children and there’s so much activity come the weekend, like kayaking and fishing. By day, children ride their bikes at the front of the villas and people jog along the road and beach. Although you may not know people, everyone is lovely and always say ‘hello’ in passing. How about schools for your daughters, are there many good ones nearby?
All three of my daughters go to Repton, which is actually quite far from here – around a 40minute drive – but 20 other children on the frond go there, too. We chose it as it’s a UK boarding school in Dubai with great British teachers and it’s just fantastic both academically and for sports. But, if parents did want something closer by, there is the Dubai College, Wellington and Kings so people do have quite a lot of choice and there’s very easy access to all of them thanks to the Sheikh Zayed Road. Talk us through your fabulous interiors, where did you shop to furnish your home? Most of our interiors came from various countries abroad; Italy, America, the UK and Paris. A lot of our bathroom fittings came from Dubai, though, mainly from a company called Banyo. They installed

‘My favourite room in the house has to be the lounge – our family room. We all literally live in here as it’s such a warm and cosy space to spend time’ a stone bath from South Africa for us, which I love. We also used Selva and I went to Harvey Nichols and Ralph Lauren in Mall of the Emirates for some home accessories and bits of furniture and to Ethan Allen for our master bedroom. The curtains throughout were made by a local company called Asnaa and our wooden shutters were made by a company called Couture Interiors. Did you have to do any work on the villa, or were you able to move straight in? We did extensive work here on the finishing and had lots of people (including my husband and myself) working on it non-stop, all hours, for 10 weeks. We changed everything outside, too. For that we used a company called A&BB landscapes who were just fabulous, I can’t fault them at all. The garden did come with a pool and we brought in a company called Exclusive to put in red tiles and add a step. Again, we didn’t have to worry about a thing with them, they literally did everything for us. December 2010
Which is your favourite room in the property and why? My favourite room has to be the lounge – our family room. We all literally live in here and it’s such a warm and cosy space to spend time. For Rayeez, it’s the garden – he’s there all the time. The girls love the third floor; it was originally created for Rayeez but he travels so much that they’ve claimed it! There’s a huge screen inside and a pool table, so it’s a cool place for them to hang out with their friends. Finally, what would you consider to be the highlights of life on the Palm? The main highlight of living here has to be the beach; to wake up in the morning and see the sea or sit outside in the evenings and watch the sea life, which is just beautiful. There’s amazing blue jellyfish and stingrays. Sometimes I’m upstairs in my bedroom and will look down to see them in the water and people swimming across the sea, it’s so safe. It’s just a different kind of lifestyle here and one that our kids love, too.

Love Thy Neighbourhood
Palm Jumeirah
An all-you-need-to-know guide for daily life in Dubai’s most famous region breakfast for early-risers. Another top pick is at Clubhouse Azraq (between Shoreline building 5 and 6); a family-friendly, South American-themed eatery called Beach House Cabana (04 361 8856). The absence of a large-scale supermarket will be remedied in the New Year, too, with a Waitrose on the Golden Mile (set to open in April, 2011), as well as extra outlets, including Starbucks and Boots.
Leisure time
Renting and buying From the moment you drive on to the Palm Jumeirah you know you’re on coveted ground. Its trunk and sprawling fronds offer an abundance of in-demand apartments and villas and there’s no sign of prices dropping yet. Demand here has kept rental rates steady, with its most prestigious developments, like the Tiara and Oceana projects, seeing a rise in figures. However, would-be lessees can rent more reasonably-priced apartments on the Golden Mile and the left-side Shoreline. Expats can buy here, too, and it’s difficult not to fall for the sizeable charms of its glamorous villas. Stroll down any of its famous fronds and you’ll pass independent villas that exude a Middle East meets Beverly Hills style. Choose between Canal Cove Townhouses, Signature Villas and Garden Homes, all of which possess two or three floors. The crème de la crème has to be the view; step out your back door and you’ll be on a private beach.
Shopping and a bite There’s an abundance of convenient shops and casual eateries on the Palm’s ‘trunk’, dotted between its Shoreline apartments. Residents can spend on delicious fare at Milk & Honey (www. milkandhoney.ae), a gourmet grocery shop tucked beneath Shoreline building 10 that sells upscale goods – and does home deliveries. Over at Al Shalal Beach Club (between buildings 7 and 8) you’ll find Mezze Mia (04 432 8582), a deli that doubles up as a café serving sandwiches, salads, teas and coffee. Clubhouse Al Nafura (between Shoreline buildings 1 and 2) is another hub of handy spots, including a Champion Cleaners, Baskin & Robbins ice-cream parlour and all-day Mini Mart. Plus, if you’re ready for a bite you can stop by the Asian Veda Pavilion restaurant (04 361 8845). Alternatively, head to Shoreline building 3 and 4 and eat at the popular Aussiethemed beach haunt Bidi Bondi (04 427 0515) which serves awesome burgers and
The Palm’s stretches of beach pose an obvious place for residents to while away their free time. But, there’s a whole host of world-class hotels on your doorstep, too. Atlantis, The Palm (www. atlantisthepalm.com) cuts a striking dash on the isle and visitors can spend the day at its mammoth pool, dine at one of its numerable restaurants or have some serious family fun at its Aquaventure water park. Don’t miss its impressive aquarium, The Lost Chambers, either. One&Only, The Palm (www.thepalm. oneandonlyresorts.com) is now open and can be found on the Palm’s furthest tip where it reveals a fabulous pool and the best cabanas in town, as well as three restaurants. For pampering, men can head to Chocolate (04 437 6001) a gents’ grooming salon by Shoreline 9 and 10, while women have Ted Morgan Hair (www.tedmorganhair.com), a ladies-only salon at Club House 1, Al Nafura.
Schooling Pre-schoolers can spend the day with trained staff at the Children’s Oasis Play Centre (www.childrensoasisnursery. com) in Al Shalal Beach Club. For kids of three to 11-years-old, Kings’ Dubai (www.kingsdubai.com) is the closest pick, while high school students can try Dubai College (www.dubaicollege.org) or GEMS Wellington International (www. wellingtoninternationalschool.com).

Steal their style… Marie-Noelle Swiderski The interior designer – and MD of Blanchard (www.blanchard.ae) – shares her home style secrets... Describe your decor in three words Welcoming, eclectic, colourful. Name your three favourite spots to shop for home goods Caspaiou for its wonderfully unique accessories; The Antiques Museum in Al Quoz for off-beat objects and exotic artefacts; Cyril Furniture for luscious curtains, gorgeous cushions and fabulous, tailor-made upholstery. No home should be without... a library, large window, and a comfy chaise longue with a furry throw! The room I love most is... my kitchen. It’s bright and very large, so people can sit in it while I cook, or socialise together at my mad parties – all the best ones take place in kitchens!

f your living room is in a constant state of disarray thanks to stray tea-cups and books, we’ve found a lust-have solution; this multifunctional (and superstylish) coffee table. With a slick glass surface, glossy finish and pull-out drawers, it’s the perfect place to display your fanciest reads. Shop for it at BoConcept in the Mall of the Emirates.
December is all about...festive fun
‘Tis the season to be jolly, so add some Christmas cheer to your home.
Your interiors are inspired by... My travels. I get seduced by art, unusual objects, colours of spices or even polished glass pebbles on a beach.

Trends on the road ahead With 2010 drawing to an end, we asked trendsetting expert Joanna Feeling what the world of interiors has in store for 2011; so you can bring your home in to the New Year with a (very stylish) bang.
M
ost of us fall into two camps when it comes to the debatable matter of true style; those who follow fashion fads and those who ignore the herd in favour of setting the trends themselves. But, we also live in blissful ignorance of the elements that shape our choices and, indeed, determine what sets our style in the first place. Cue those inthe-know, like seasoned ‘trend forecasting expert’, Joanna Feeling. But what exactly qualifies her for such a title? “It’s a specialised technique that you learn and develop over time, rather than something you study for,” she explains. For fashion graduate Feeling, it meant an early career as a designer, before hopping aboard the trend merry-go-round full-time. “I spent 13 years forecasting trends for an array of companies, from interior brand Pottery December 2010
Barn in the US, to electronic brands, like LG,” she says.
A trend is born So how can mere mortals like ourselves get in on the act and be one step ahead to achieving cutting edge style? “We look at how consumers are currently behaving and use this to predict how they will spend in the future,” reveals Joanna. “Key examples of this are films – we look at what titles are due for release up to two years in advance – as well as what books will be published and even which art exhibitions are set to appear in key galleries worldwide.” With such elements saturating the media, it’s no wonder we all want a piece of the latest exciting release; be it Julia Robert’s journey of self-discovery in Eat Love Pray (cue
trend tip: ‘If you can’t afford to change your décor each season, keep rooms simple with a white backdrop and add colour with lampshades, artwork, textiles and tableware. This way it’s ever-so easy to change the look of a room when you get bored, without having to spend big’ – Joanna Feeling

Use new flick Eat, Love, Pray as inspiration for natural, wood accessories fit for a Bali beach retreat
Jawad natural, wood accessories fit for a Balinese beach retreat) or cute tea-sets fit for a Mad Hatter’s tea party thanks to the revival of Alice in Wonderland on the silver screen. Such upcoming debuts all play a part in creating the next big trend, continues Joanna: “This information filters through to influence colours and design trends. We also have a panel of experts, from influential journalists to fabric and
wallpaper designers, who we work with to establish new directions and formulate our trends for the New Year.”
WHat’s HOt FOR 2011? With December dates speeding through our diaries, the question on every decorating-enthusiast’s lips is what interior treats does the New Year hold? “For Spring/Summer, 2011 there’s a
distinctly nostalgic traveller theme which we call Voyager,” reveals Joanna. “It’s all about celebrating the ‘golden age of travel’ and you’ll see references to literature and film from the 1930s.” And if quintessential English style tickles your fancy, you’re in luck: “Libertine is a theme inspired by outdoor life, festivals and country fetes or British beach holidays, full of candycoloured pastels,” she says. Think oldschool deckchair stripes, vintage bunting and sugary sweet hues. If that’s not your cup of English tea, The Collector is sure to appeal to more understated tastes: “This is a classic trend that uses natural materials and Deft Blue ceramics,” says Joanna. And, the good news is, there’s even something for homeowners on a budget: “Epicurean,” she reveals. “It’s a look that’s all about understated, crafted luxury – perfect for consumers still recovering from a recession.” You heard it here first…
ONE FOR HOME
Timeless classics Some things never go out of style. So, if you want to create a timeless look to stand the test of time, take a look at these fab four options…
Euro Chic Our trendsetter in-the-know, Joanna Feeling tells us that the Scandinavian look remains a big hit. In interior terms it translates to neutral hues and a combination of materials; namely light-coloured woods, crisp cottons and furniture in modern, no-fuss lines. Pencil in a trip to IKEA for inspiration.
Old Hollywood The ‘40s and ‘50s spawned an age of timeless glamour and with it unforgettable stars: ponder Audrey Hepburn’s impish charms, the debonair Rat Pack, super-swathe Cary Grant and the ultimate screen siren, Marilyn
Monroe. Whoever your style crush is, adorn your walls with prints of your chosen pin-up, against a monochrome colour scheme. Classic yet very cool.
Pure White The most insignificant of hues is one that can pack a punch when used well; and never, ever dates. A white base looks effortlessly fresh in virtually every room in the house and can be combined to great effect with any colour. One basic that’s well worth sticking to.
Coastal Beach Joanna Feeling tells us this remains the look of choice in the USA. Best
THE One
personified by Pottery Barn, it’s all about a clean and fresh look, inspired by sand, sea and surf. Mix blue hues with crisp whites and bring in wicker and wood materials as well as a few choice details – shells and nautical stripes will both evoke that ‘by the beach’ feel. Perfect if your abode comes with a sea view.

Better… Kitchens
Cooking, eating, entertaining – nowadays kitchens are so much more than just a place to prepare meals. We round up the classiest designs in town; use them as you will…
Back to Black A gloss-black finish creates the sharpest of kitchen looks and this design’s square shapes help cut a masculine dash any bachelor would be proud of. Add variety with bold white details for a chic, monochrome look; a feminine touch with bold blooms; or a zestier edge with a display of colourful citrus fruits. Whatever you do with its ebony hues, be sure to take a forward-thinking approach to the room’s ‘flow’. Opt for a centrally placed island to prepare culinary fare and ensure cooking stations, sinks and fridges are all within easy reach.

‘Nowadays, designs are all about fusing eating and living spaces – a must for those who love nothing more than playing host’ Standout Style Achieve super slick design style with an all-white, high-gloss kitchen with stainless steel details. Don’t be afraid to mix materials either; the use of dark wood against stark white here helps bring a depth and warmth to the room for a home-friendly finish. We love the quirky archway – a product of a new architectural design concept from +Artesio. In an open-plan setting such a feature creates a clear division, not to mention something your guests can’t possibly ignore.

Fitted FiniSheS Small kitchens needn’t be boring. Choose curved work surfaces, which provide the perfect contemporary alternative – and an altogether softer look – to traditional right-angles. Extend it the entire width of the room, with under-counter storage all the way, and you’ll eradicate the need for extra bulky units – ideal if you prefer to keep your pots and pans out of sight. Keeping all of your kitchen units on one side of the room will also provide a feeling of space, proving that less is most certainly more.

compact cool If you have an open-plan space, a funky and multi-purpose island makes a striking space-filler. We just love this funky yellow design from Italian king of kitchen cool, Pedini. Its curved inner centre serves as the ideal spot to prepare meals, from which you can move with ease between its sink and hob, all the white chatting to your guests on its outer table – entertaining made easy. This design is all about fusing eating and living spaces – a must for those who love nothing more than playing host.

How do I… overhaul my blank walls? Seven steps to wonder walls
1
Fine Finishes Want to maintain a modern look but bored of white walls? Spruce them up with a decorative finish or coating – which can be applied both inside and out. Try a pearlescent coat for a shimmering effect, gold or silver leaf for all-out glamour, a gloss finish for slicker settings or even granite for a natural edge. Try CapDec, www.capdec.ae
2
Photo gallery Create your very own gallery by adorning one wall with rows of family photos taken through the ages. Print them in black and white for a chic, timeless feel and display them inside black frames for a clean look or mismatched vintage-style designs for a charming, homely feel.
3
Mirror, Mirror… You can make a real design feature by having one mirrored wall, from floor-to-ceiling. It can serve as a practical piece inside walkin wardrobes or make a show-stopping addition to grand hallways. A sure fire way to evoke an illusion of space, too.
4
a lick oF Paint Colour is the easiest way to enliven plain walls – use hues to convey your preferred mood in a room. Nurturing greens and blues evoke a tranquil feel; neutrals convey peace; pinks and reds romance; while warm yellows provide the sunniest of settings.
5
Feature wall Seek out the most decadent of prints and deck one signature wall in it for an elaborate feature that looks fabulous in bedrooms, dining rooms and lounges alike. We love damask swirls injected with metallic hues. Standout style guaranteed. Try Designers Guild, www.maisondart.ae December 2010

a work oF art Obvious it may be, but a great painting will create atmosphere, pull a room’s look together and serve as a focal point, too. Use Arabicstyle wall hangings for a Middle Eastern flavour, a neo-classical oil painting in a dramatic gold frame for true grandeur
or European landscapes in bright hues – fantastically fresh on white walls.
7
Fun Features Jazz up kids’ bedroom walls by decking one in a blackboard finish, where they can doodle away to their hearts’ content.
The writing’s on the wall If you rent your home and are loathe (or not allowed) to make big changes, try the latest trend to hit the UAE; personalised wall coverings. Sue Flower of Kollektion & Co (www.thekollektion.com) offers her tips…

1 For the garnish, roast the apples in the oven, with the honey poured on top. 2 Roast the potatoes by blanching them first in water and then cooking in a very hot oven until they’re brown in colour. 3 For the gravy, use the liquid created by the turkey’s juices and water. Combine it with the apples and pass it all through a strainer to remove any fat and add the corn flour slowly to create a thicker consistency.

Lay one on top of the other and make a pleat in the centre. Next, lay it over the pudding basins and tie firmly onto the top of each with a piece of string. 4 Put the pudding into a pan, on a trivet or upturned saucer, add boiling water so that it comes a quarter of the way up the basin, then cover and steam for four hours, or longer if you prefer. 5 Top up with water if you need to.
