Cosy living rooms and stylish tweaks to make entertaining at home all the more enjoyable
The perfect festive table - Storage solutions - Find your villa in Jumeirah Islands
Better Homes Magazine | welcome
WELcoME To THE DEcEMBER iSSuE Christmas is here again, and we love this time of year – when festive cheer is in the air, markets pop up, holidays begin and people are merry. 2016 has whizzed past and with the last issue of the year, my time at Better Homes Magazine comes to a close as well. What have I learned about design trends this year? Bold is the way to go – it’s all about making a statement, and colour isn’t something to shy away from. Marble and copper accents have made their way into my home, and I just can’t get enough of refined minimalism. Do you have any design trends that will stick with you through 2017?
Managing Director Victoria Thatcher Editorial Director John Thatcher Editor Nicola Monteath
The December issue has plenty of inspiration if you’re looking to organise your space (page 32), or perhaps revamp your living room or just give it a minor tweak (page 34). Shop festive finds (page 28), scour designers’ hot spots in the city (page 26) and learn how to put together the perfect festive spread for your dinner party (page 25). This month we toured a stunning home in Arabian Ranches and learned a great deal about upcycling (page 44), and also got an insight into a natureinfused apartment in Moscow that was designed from scratch (page 38). As always, Better Homes showcase their latest villas on the market (page 58) so if you’re considering moving to Jumeirah Islands, now is the time to find your new home.

The initiative underlines Dubai’s commitment to becoming the world’s most sustainable city. Households and offices can reduce electricity – consumed for lighting – by up to 90% with these bulbs. The average lifespan is 15 times longer than the conventional bulb, and it’s available in cool daylight and warm white colours, as well as a variety of shapes.

Gone are the days when a conventional coffee table would suffice. It’s all about trendy, unusual-shaped tables that double up as artsy centrepieces, while still serving a purpose – like this tiered Oxford coffee table (Dhs3,693, Blanc D’Ivoire).

A rug instantly uplifts a living room, adding texture and warmth. When choosing one, decide whether you want to go for spacious or snug, as it will modify the ambience of the whole room. This Copia rug (Dhs2,945, Zara Home) grabs the eye, yet won’t steal focus from a neutral colour scheme.
lit tlE Extras
Once the bigger pieces are set in place, it’s time to accessorise. Tones of white, gold and copper will suit most set-ups, as will natural materials like marble. Simple, refined features such as this Elite d’Art table lamp (Dhs949 at Lifestyle) will showcase your personality while maintaining a cohesive style.

The beige-brown hue of this ORIA armchair (Dhs2,295, Fusion by THE One) screams elegance and will sit perfectly with a white or light-coloured couch. Add in one chair to your seating arrangement to make a bold statement, or a pair if you have the space, teamed with a dovegrey cashmere throw.

implify your style. A cluttered space looks messy, rather than chic and stylish. Keep pieces that have a sentimental value or evoke strong memories. Your living room should reflect your personal taste and aesthetic, especially with the finer details. Mix materials such as metal, wood and marble, along with fabrics and textures (rugs, cushions) for dynamism and sophistication.

it reflects my personality and my aesthetic. i gravitate towards vibrant colours and love mixing vintage with contemporary pieces as well as gathering unique finds from my travels. Design has progressed and evolved throughout the years. in the beginning, design had to be identical with everything coming in pairs. Now, design has embraced the concept of mismatching, blending and mixing obviously contradicting and diverse styles. Based on my experiences, i’ve come to realise that it’s important to stay true to your own design aesthetic and to freely explore it.

My home, in its entirety, allows me to get and feel inspired. My aim was to transform my home into a safe and welcoming space so that it could be inspiring to anyone, from my immediate family who reside there to a visitor coming by for a coffee. However, i must add that the kitchen is where i feel most at home. it’s the space where we gather as friends and family, laugh and reconnect with one another. it’s also a space where i can really let loose – my creativity flows freely when
trying new ingredients, testing exciting flavours and creating new dishes.
DiY LoVE
i revamped our kitchen, opened up the ceilings and replaced all the tiled floors with brushed concrete to soften the ambience. We also made a big opening between the living room and terrace as we pretty much live outside six months of the year. i tried to do the garden as well but quickly realised it wasn’t worth it with two boys thinking my garden was their very own football pitch.

Setting a feStive table the right ingredients Milena Nonaillada, product manager, tableware at Villeroy & Boch, shares her tips for creating the ultimate celebratory dining set-up kEEp it siMplE: classic white tableware makes a great base for a festive setting. a crisp white collection can be used all year round and matched with vibrant accessories and novelty decorations to suit the season. if you’re opting for an all-white theme, don’t overcrowd the table, and add interest with textured tableware and linen. play with ColouR: While white remains a timeless option, and a popular choice for tableware, colour is making a huge comeback. Don’t be afraid to add in a few bold-coloured plates in red and green to conjure up a feeling of warmth. Saturated yet subtle blue tones are less traditional but work just as well with a wintry holiday-table aesthetic.
sEt thE MooD: candles infuse things with a soft ambience. for a simple but effective centrepiece, fill a few crystal bowls or vases with twigs and holly, and add a round red candle to each one. consider using tall crystal candleholders – they are elegant and add height to your table – but make sure they don’t obscure the view of your guests. BRing thE outDooRs in: Whether your style is traditional or modern,
dressing the table with herbs, fruits, pine cones and flowers is the easiest way to create a natural, homely vibe. Use them as rustic centrepieces and decorate with ribbons, bows, baubles and trinkets. floral arrangements are always eye-catching – try amaryllis and hyacinths in bright red, pink and purple, for a luxurious finish.
DouBlE up: fill small pots with mini trees or plants, and drape a piece of fabric around each. add name cards and fix with a ribbon before placing one at each place setting. they’ll make thoughtful table decorations and guests can also take them home as a gift, to remind them of the lovely dinner.

Try to stick with a frame that’s between 8cm and 12 cm wide, and not too heavy on the detail. Unless the theme of your room is baroque, a very ornate frame may look gaudy. remember that your screen ratio is either 16:9 or 4:3, so follow these proportions and go by the measurement of the inside of the frame. Any frame shop can construct a frame for you, or if you want to DiY, Dragon Mart has an extensive selection. They come in 2-3m-long sticks and are quite affordable. Have the vendor cut four pieces out of one stick and cut each frame diagonally to the size of your TV. With simple wood glue you can connect the frame at home and attach it to your TV or wall.
How do I g et recess e d l i g ht i ng r ig h t ?
recessed lighting can be tricky so it’s always good to install the type
with rotating heads that can change direction. Keeping recessed lights closer to the side walls is also an excellent way of diversifying the light in a room, as you can use it to flood an empty wall or painting, creating that extra drama.

First of all, a double-length mirror in a two-storey entranceway can really bring things together – as well as affording you a practical final checkpoint before leaving the house. it also creates a light, airy feel. A round or square rug in the centre of the foyer can create an additional inviting layer, especially when combined with a small entrance table on top. This can be coupled with a vase, flower arrangement or art sculpture to create a strong first impression on guests entering your home. You could also consider suspending a beautiful midsized light or chandelier. it’ll add to the wow factor and create grandeur in an otherwise empty vaulted space.

Ask the eXpert Nadia Sallustio, owner of The den at city Walk, gives us her top organisational tips for a functional storage room 1. the first thing you must do is declutter. Be ruthless and get rid of everything you have no use for. You’ll be amazed at what you have stored that you’re no longer using. When you remove the items you don’t need, it will allow you to make space for things you need to reach easily. this will stop you from buying items you already have, but have forgotten about over time. 2. racks and wall hangers are ideal if you want to clear the floor of junk without taking up too much space. You can also secure them to the back of a door and use them to store small items such as paint brushes, wrapping paper and shopping bags. 3. If you have room, a few good storage units will utilise what space you have as they can usually be stacked up. having a separate drawer for everything will help you find what you need and make tidying up faster. 4. Don’t forget to label. When you can see at a glance what is in a box or storage unit, you’ll be able to find things more easily. plus, they’re easy to change if you need to use the box again for other items.

1. lighting can often be overlooked. Swap your table lamps for statement floor-standing designs and giant candles to create a cosy vibe. you could also add in a dramatic ceiling or wall light. 2. a new throw and cushions give your existing sofa a seasonal refresh and provide both colour and texture. 3. replacing doors and handles instantly upgrades classic furniture pieces. “M
y task here was to create a comfortable and, as far as possible, spacious environment because in a large megalopolis like Moscow there is a shortage of natural, quiet spaces. i wanted to mimic the ambience of nature, too,” says interior designer Veronika sudnikova of this three-bedroom city apartment that’s home to a family of four. the colours of nature served as a great inspiration for Veronika’s plans – from the blue of the early evening sky to the yellow of the sun and hot sand – much of which the residents of the russian capital tend to miss out on, being in a cold climate. “Colour is very important,” explains Veronika. “i’m always very attentive to the selection of textures and shades. i’m quite fond of patterns, but in my interiors i mix them with great care to ensure harmony.” the apartment was in its rawest form – concrete walls without finishing – when first revealed to the designer. “i tweaked the layout based on the client’s wishes,” she says. “the apartment had three balconies; we joined two with the living space and reduced the third.” Veronika’s most imperative decision was to integrate further natural elements in the shape of furniture, lamps, wallpaper, curtains and upholstery that evoke the figures and plumage of birds. the bright living room, for example, is filled with imagery of these feathered creatures. “i wanted to create a cosy home nest full of positive emotions, natural paint colours, sunlight and spiritual warmth,” she says. the sofa and chairs from Meridiani, and the cushions and curtains, were all upholstered in Dedar fabric. the Morelato library shelving showcases

The nook was created for the family to catch up in, and the whole set-up was kept neutral and earthy for a sense of calm. Omexco wallpapers were used to complement the Porta Romana wall
lamp to complement the setting. For the master bedroom, the colour red was a must, according to the client. Veronika upholstered the Maxalto bed and chairs in scarlet and burgundy. To balance the rich furnishings, a soft, neutral Elitis wallpaper was chosen, along with an Alivar high chest, bedside tables and a Bover suspension lamp. The children’s bedrooms, meanwhile, are colourful without being overly childish. An Ikea seat, nestled near the window, sits across from a green sofabed designed by Veronika, and a Porada desk and armchair work as a study space in

lights. At the other end of the space, the dining area features Costantini Pietro dining chairs covered with Dedar fabric, an Alivar cabinet for storage, a suspension lamp from DelightFULL, and drape fabrics from Jim Thomson. “The dining room was initially a bedroom, according to the layout,” recalls Veronika. But the huge round bay window was something she wanted to enhance, so she brought in the dining table so that everyone could enjoy the aspect. The natural theme continues in the design of the chandelier, chair coverings and screens below the window. The kitchen is dominated by an off-white suite from Euromobil with Porcelanosa tiles and a Vibia suspension

one room. The second children’s room boasts an oceanic theme, and a Manders rug, Jesse table, Flos wall light and Porada desk fill it with character. Overall, the pieces Veronika are most fond of are the library – as it’s unique, decorative and resembles the knobbly legs of cranes, in keeping with the bird theme – and the chandelier in the dining area. Veronika is confident that she succeeded in creating an interior that brings aesthetic pleasure to its inhabitants every day. “Just three months ago the client sent me a note saying it brings her such great happiness to wake up in the bedroom of her dreams,” she says. A job well done indeed.

Tucked away in Arabian Ranches is a gorgeous villa filled with earthy elements, upcycled furnishings and plenty of warmth, and fresh, natural aromas wafting through the air. Home to landscape designer Kamelia Bin Zaal and her four-year-old son Zaal, the place is perfect for the pair, with freshness, purity and their shared affinity for Star Wars revealing their personalities. Kamelia is part Emirati, part Scottish, and has lived in the UAE for more than 20 years. Before her move to this community, the designer lived in Al Barari (owned by her family), where she took the development’s entire landscaping process under her wing with the launch of her company. Today, this three-bedroom abode is where memories are made and is more about contentment and that homely vibe than just being a place to reside. Natural materials such as metal and wood are at the forefront of the design,
White in the bedroom exudes that feeling of purity and cleanliness, which I love
and Kamelia tells us her favourite spots are the garden and kitchen. She can be found cooking up a delicious foga (an authentic Emirati rice and fish/chicken dish) from time to time, and when she isn’t, the back garden is where she indulges in a few moments of Zen. The terrace boasts a play area, swimming pool and storage space, and it’s here that you can see some of her creative upcycling ideas – such as the cable-barrel tables. When working on the Al Barari project, Kamelia came across plenty of cable barrels, which she realised could be reused as furniture pieces. They were cut, painted and revamped to create distinctive outdoor tables and a large indoor dining table. “What I loved about this house is that they had painted all the dark-brown wood white, which is very me,” she says. The tables aren’t the only ‘projects’ in the house – Kamelia painted the pergolas white and added rattan (from Satwa) to create shade. She also found her couch on dubizzle.com and gave it a minor tweak. “You don’t always have to buy new furniture,” she insists. “You can always upcycle by adding

a piece of glass on top of a table, say, or a coat of paint. People have become very disposable in how they live and we should try to reverse that.” The all-white, grey and beige scheme that unites the villa is brightened up with souvenirs from travels and charity walks with Gulf Good. A wide selection is displayed upstairs on the landing, with mementos from Bhutan, Borneo and many other countries standing out. The mother and son’s adoration of Star Wars comes through in Zaal’s bedroom, with the starship bed, toys and accessories placed all over. “My brother bought the bed for him and I think it’s because he knows his sister is a huge fan,” Kamelia laughs.
Kamelia’s bedroom showcases more white and neutral tones. “White in the bedroom exudes that feeling of purity and cleanliness, which I love,” she explains. Previously built-in shelves hold a collection of treasured photographs, while the walls are adorned with complementary artwork. Living within the Arabian Ranches community has its perks, and Kamelia is quick to highlight that she loves it here, from the playground a few steps away to the cafés nearby. “It’s a very sociable place, and I am very orientated towards that feel,” she tells us. Her home is a true replica of this aesthetic, with clean, simple décor lending cosiness and warmth in a fresh, natural setting.

What sets your school apar t ?
Collegiate American School is a neighbourhood school offering the US High School Diploma and IB Diploma programme. It has been accredited by the Council of International Schools and New England Association of Schools and Colleges. We also have a Good rating from KHDA, and promote STEM learning through a high-tech laboratory and instructional time for Grades 3 to 10. How does the school promote healthy eating habits?
As we cater to international students, we serve a wide range of balanced meals to suit different tastes. We also promote a ‘healthy initiative’ each month, such as nutrition, movement or diabetes awareness. The student handbooks specifically address healthy eating with regard to food brought into school, and teachers encourage healthy snacks.

Our main admissions intake is at the start of the academic year in September. However, we have an ongoing policy to admit students throughout the year, depending on the availability of places. We accept students of any nationality who are able to demonstrate the ability to successfully learn within our curriculum and who will contribute in a positive way to our school.
