Welcome to the DecemBeR issue

W

e’ve been catching up with a few Brits in the lead-up to this month’s issue. Interior designer Jo Hamilton, perhaps best known for her luxurious aesthetic and use of colour, had so much advice for creating a modern English look, including considering letting a piece of art take centre stage, rather than choosing it last, and transforming your favourite artwork into a rug, that I’ve squeezed these tips in here because there wasn’t enough space in our interview with her on page 20. Meanwhile, Tim Oulton (page 32), of furniture brand Timothy Oulton, was recently in town to welcome guests at Marina Home Barsha, which was transformed into a speakeasy club for an evening, so we could catch a glimpse of his 2018 collection, featuring rock crystal. During a tour of her Victory Heights villa (page 38), Rhian Clarke’s stories of her interiors adventures gave us an insight into the lengths she’ll go to in her quest for the perfect home. To help you celebrate the festive season in style with friends and family, we’ve gleaned some decorative advice from Home Centre’s style and trends manager Anri Hamilton (page 24), chosen some sparkling styles (page 27), gathered some elegant dining inspiration (page 34) and picked some deliciously scented and colourful candles to create a warm glow (page 72). Finally, if you’re looking for a spacious villa, check out our guide to stunning Jumeirah Park (page 51).

Ask the eXPeRt “The lovely thing about modern English style is that it isn’t an off-thepeg look,” says interior designer Jo Hamilton (johamilton.co.uk). “A beautiful, classic English design can be used as a base, however. A layout of two sofas facing each other, with a coffee table in the middle and a gorgeous chandelier above it, for instance, provides a formal reference point. But it doesn’t mean those things have to

be traditional or classic; they might be more practical, modern and comfy. “I like to create an eclectic mix of things that work really well together, such as an antique piece of furniture that sits in front of a gorgeous, oversized piece of modern art. They need to complement each other in terms of texture or colour, but the combination of styles gives the look an edge. “When creating this look, it is important to choose what

we love, but also stay relevant. Rich jewel tones are on-trend, but are also classic colours that add weight to a scheme and can be used in a fresh way, such as in modern art. “We’re in an ‘anything goes’ period right now. Just remember to consider where the eye falls when you walk into a room. Designing a room is like painting a canvas. Choose no more than one or two amazing key pieces to avoid overloading the eye.”

“Find the perfect corner for the Christmas tree,” advises Anri Hamilton, style and trends manager at Home Centre. “Whether modern or traditional, it provides a key focal point. “Focus on one area of the room and consider how to best maximise that space. Fewer carefully selected decorative items grouped together will have more impact than many single items dispersed across the room. The dining table, coffee table, sideboard and bookshelves are easy spaces to work with to create a statement. For hues, classic gold, white and green combinations are always a winner,

but there are some fabulous, vibrant schemes trending this year. Experiment with bright teal, orange, and pink combinations for a bold, fiestainspired look. “Keep an eye out for unexpected festive animals, such as dinosaurs, jellyfish and flamingos to add some novelty and fun to the tree. “For a finishing touch, candles and string lights work in any home. Combine scented pillar candles and mirrored or glass decorations in a tray for a relaxed and cosy ambience. “Also, seasonal scents, including sweet gingerbread and marshmallow, are a great way to instantly make your home feel festive.”

Ask A designer Our interiors expert answers your queries and shares her hidden gems in the city

Mei Al Hakim, interior designer at IDdesign I’ve just bought a new villa. How do I achieve an effortless, thrown together look rather than a matchy style? The task of putting together a home can be daunting. However, a bit of patience and a lot of research will help you create a cohesive, effortless look for your space. Firstly, consider what types of styles complement your space as well as your personal taste. Start with a mood board, which brings together your chosen styles, hues and theme – this can be as simple as putting together some pieces of furniture and a colour palette. By doing so, you will avoid making purchases of items that don’t work together with the whole theme. You can mix and match materials, such as a soft fabric L-shaped sofa with a leather armchair, but ensure the colour palette is balanced. I recommend using metallics for accents only; incorporating no more than two different materials for tables in one room and; if you mix classic and modern styles, a ratio of 90% of one style to 10% of the other is a good rule of thumb. Once you have chosen the furniture, walls and floor décor, you can incorporate the latest seasonal trends with cushions, throws and accessories.

a collapsible teepee tent, and to choose easily accessible storage. Stackable storage boxes, with wheels, are always a good option. How can I use lighting to create different moods throughout my home? Lighting can make or break a room, aesthetically and functionally, so it is important to have the right light. Choosing lighting depends on what function it serves, such as ambient light, background light, task light, feature light and so on. Make sure you study your space before making a purchase. I suggest using a chandelier as a decorative or statement piece in a room, directing a spotlight towards a painting to illuminate it and selecting table lamps and standing lamps for low-level lighting. Remember to layer light, just as you layer textures.

Any more COpy

My little black book top décor tip: Simplicity is key. An overdone look is easy to avoid by choosing patterns and palettes that complement each other. Stick to one theme for a harmonious feel.

best-kept secret: There is no definitive style, trend or colour for interior design. Let your personal style rule the character of your home rather than what’s on-trend or what the so-called experts say you should be achieving with your décor.

dreaM buy: Hermes sofa by Papadatos (available from Chattels & More) – it’s a classic, versatile piece and I love its finish and texture.

Chattels & More

I need some space-saving solutions for my daughter’s bedroom. What do you suggest? Choose multi-functional furniture, such as a bed with storage space. Consider buying a bed with storage compartments or look for individual bed drawers that can be attached to the bottom of the bed. I recommend selecting furniture and accessories that can be folded and stored away when not in use, such as bhomes.com | 25

Design DNA

I believe in simplicity: stripping things down to their essential, core purpose to get the most fundamental version of the object. Simplicity is clarity of purpose, function and communication of what an object is and does.

Top tip for achieving a fresh, coastal look

The secret to a coastal look is to be able to bring the outdoor landscape into your home interior. Choose a colour palette that is inspired by the seaside, allow natural sunlight in using soft sheers, include oversized green plants to create that island paradise feeling and, finally, incorporate home décor accents that are inspired by the sea.

Wallpaper or paint?

I personally prefer to work with wallpaper because it comes in a dazzling array of designs and colours, with a ridiculous selection of beautiful effects. It is also durable for many years, washable and has various easy installation and removal

methods. Once, in the Ethan Allen showroom, we had a dark grey wallpaper, with an extruded classical texture that was due to be updated for the next season. Instead of peeling off the wallpaper, we painted a light shade of grey over it and it looked beautiful with its textured effect.

Colour combo to try

Sometimes, when working on a villa or an apartment project, I encourage the whole family to attend the presentation so they can share their opinion on what they want to feel when they are in each room. Some colour combinations, such as yellow and turquoise, give a midcentury modernism touch, while lavender and chartreuse make a happy colour combination in the living room.

Top lighting tip

Look to the future Tim Oulton, founder of furniture brand Timothy Oulton, on cutting-edge techniques, collecting antiques and creating experiences Interview: Lucy Land Why do you think it’s important to support traditional craftsmanship? Handcraftsmanship is at the heart of our company and that’s something I never want to change. It’s why our pieces are so authentic: we use old methods and simple tools. Human sensibility creates a unique character and distinctive individuality that can’t be achieved any other way. Many of your designs are inspired by antiques, your father’s military background and British heritage – is there a connection that ties these inspirations together? There’s a sense of heritage across all three elements. After my dad left the military, he opened a little antiques shop near Manchester, and when I left school he suggested I work in the business. I was amazed by the quality of the stuff that the British made over 300 years – all that detail, right down to the locks and the handles. What’s your favourite design era? In Victorian times, Britain made, and supplied the world with, the most incredible things – we became known for design. It’s that sense of enduring quality, and the attention to detail, that really sets it apart. The Art Deco period is another one that gets under my skin. The 1920s was a time of massive social change. There was this sense of optimism for the future and a level of sophistication that was expressed through design. What is the most interesting vintage item you’ve ever found? I bought an antique at auction in London that belonged to Prince William Augustus, the Duke of Cumberland, who was the third and youngest son of King George II of Great Britain. He’s best remembered for quashing the Jacobean rebellion in 1746, with the help of the Manchester Regiment. The prince would have personally used the trunk to travel between his residence in London and his country retreats in Windsor and Hampton Court. It has inspired the Cumberland collection – we repurposed the design into functional furniture pieces, including a desk and side tables.

32 | bhomes.com

What new material are you most excited about? I love Carbonstone, which we launched this year and have used on some of our tables. It’s formed from recycled quartz fragments, using a very technical process that takes place underground over approximately a week. The resulting stone has a translucent crystallised effect that plays with the light. I’m also really excited about the new 2018 collection, which has some very daring innovations using rock crystal. What are you most proud of? Our real milestone was opening the four-storey showroom in Gaoming, China in 2011. It’s the heartland: it’s where the designers create in their workshops; where we entertain guests; and where we showcase the full collections. Unlike anything else you’ll experience, it’s 40,000 sq. ft. of a totally unique, immersive world. It was a collaborative effort between a lot of different people and the interior architecture and design is completely bespoke. What do you think has been key to your success? We have our own way of doing things, we stick to our values and we don’t compromise. It’s never been about the mass market for us. We don’t want everyone to love us, which is part of our appeal. Our customers want authentic, handcrafted pieces that push the boundaries, and that’s just as true for people in Los Angeles as it is for people in Amsterdam. Do you personally collect anything? I still love to collect antiques and I spend a lot of time in flea markets and at auctions, or I buy from private collectors. I’ve been in the antiques business a long time and I’m still very much part of that world – it’s where I get a lot of the inspiration for my designs. I’m obsessed with Louis Vuitton trunks, and I also have a large collection of antique Dunhill lighters that are very special. A selection of Timothy Oulton’s (timothyoulton.com) pieces are available instore at Marina Home Barsha, with the entire collection available to order instore.

It figures Interior stylist Rhian Clarke has completely reconfigured her Victory Heights villa to create her perfect family home

W

hat do you need your space to do? It’s the question that Rhian Clarke returns to time and again when designing a home. Her own family villa in Victory Heights is stunning, but also practical and her meticulous attention to detail could, in part, be attributed to her background as a chartered accountant. “My love of layouts, the tiles, my drawings, ability to work out symmetries and what should be hidden and what should stay exposed – that all comes from my previous career and having a mathematical mind.”

While taking time off with her second child, Mia, five years ago, she started renovating a French farmhouse, which is now their family holiday home, decorated with soft colours and lots of linen, before moving onto her Victory Heights project. Word of her talent spread and her second career as an interior stylist has since taken off. Her passion is contagious, too. If you’re a friend or relative of hers, you’ll very likely find yourself joining in her home interior adventures. The beautiful globe-like, retro-style light fittings in her bathrooms, for example, came from Shades of Light in New York. Unable to buy them because she didn’t have an American credit card, she messaged a friend who was moving her belongings from the US to Dubai, who consequently organised the purchase and delivery. “Three boxes of globe lights arrived at my previous home,” Rhian says. “And I turned around to discover my daughter holding one. Before I knew it, she dropped it on the tiled floor. But it bounced!” Rhian chose most of the electricals in the UK, and ordered them online for delivery to her sister’s house, who drove all the way to the family holiday home in France to hand them over. Three big bags full were then escorted back to Dubai by Rhian’s husband, Richard. A local friend was a soundboard for Rhian on the downstairs bathroom, with its challenging, awkward shape. The beautiful lighting, tile-framed mirror and intricate floor tiling have given the room a wow factor. “I wanted to make sure that no tiles were cut up to fit in the space, so I gave the patterned tiles a dark tile border.” Signature Living, the renovations company who worked on the project, usually spend one-and-a-half days tiling a bathroom. However, they’ve been known to take a lot longer on some of Rhian’s bathrooms due to the mix and complexity of the tile shapes, levels and ledges. Rhian has spotted some of the craftsmen taking selfies in front of their work so they can send photos to their families. “I think it’s lovely that they take such pride in what they do,” she enthuses. She clearly relishes a challenge. “I had 16 days to choose and buy everything – taps, tiles, toilets, paint colours, you name it – because I was going away for the summer and the builders were working on the villa while I was away,” she reveals. Beyond that awkward bathroom, she has completely reconfigured the space. “We’ve replaced the floors and ceilings; we’ve taken walls down, installed new walls; created a new stairwell and new rooms; and extended the kitchen.” Arguably, the master suite, with its hotellike en-suite bathroom, underwent the biggest transformation. Walls were knocked down to open up the space and new wardrobes re-built. It is full of surprises, such as a secret walk-in wardrobe where a balcony used to be; a vanity area hidden in another wardrobe; and, in the bathroom, the lights framing the freestanding bath flicker like candles. The kitchen, which was originally a square room, with one door for entry, has been transformed into the heart of the home, with sleek lines, geometric lights and gorgeous walls painted with Van Deusen

The entire renovation project took three months to complete, with other changes including a cosy TV room leading to Richard’s office where an outdoor patio was previously located. The result is an elegant home that showcases Rhian’s fresh approach, cleverly combining an uncluttered style with contrasting colours and shapes. “I love that this home is mine and that every single inch of it has been chosen by me,” Rhian says. “There is nothing that I have chosen for this house that I don’t love, which is a really lucky thing to say because a lot of the time you buy a house and you’re not able to change anything. I’ve been able to change everything in this house to make it the home that we want it to be.”

A bright future An inspiring contemporary redesign celebrates the 1970s architecture of this London townhouse

Words: Lucy Land

The round table with a banquette was the obvious thing to do

“T

he 1970s was an optimistic time. From a design point of view, it was very fresh,” says Linda Levene, design director at consultancy LLI Design, which recently redesigned and refurbished a ’70s four-storey townhouse in leafy north London that scooped Best Interior Design Private Residence, London accolade in the United Kingdom Property Awards. Set back from the road in Highgate Village, the home was bought by a couple who wanted to celebrate its ’70s feel. Benefitting from plenty of natural light, the house featured clean lines; a conservatory located at the front of the house, on the top floor; and a teak ceiling, also on the second floor. With two young children, the couple wanted a comfortable, family space that celebrated the building’s history combined with a 21st century aesthetic. Although the original room sizes were

decent, stretching the full width of the property on each floor, circulation spaces on all floors were cramped and dark due to a spiral staircase that led from the lower ground floor to the upper ground floor. “As you entered the house on the ground floor, you immediately came up against the staircase, so you felt squeezed as soon as you walked in,” Linda reveals. “The centre of the house felt very tight.” To create a sense of laterality, the spiral staircase and internal walls were removed, while an open-tread glass and steel staircase was installed towards the back of the house to maximise the space. French doors were added across the entire back of the building to create a sense of openness. Despite its lack of light, the lower ground floor was transformed into a dynamic entrance hall, TV space and office. An industrial warehouse feel was given to this hard working area, with underfloor heating,

while the floor was tiled with a large format Mutina tile in dark khaki with an embossed design, complemented by a distressed painted brick-effect wallpaper on the back wall. As a counterpoint to the walls and floor, bright furniture – featuring burnt orange, yellow and dark woods with industrial metals – was added. “With its moody, energetic feel, it wasn’t going to matter if family bikes and pushchairs were kept in this area”. The atmosphere changes dramatically on entering the light-filled upper ground floor, which boasts a beautiful view of the verdant garden. To create a sense of serenity, a colour palette of soft cream, yellow, and pale blue with key accent pieces in black was chosen. With a lack of space in the pale khaki, cream and dark bronze-tiled kitchen, the rest of the space had to function as a dining area as well as a living room so the furniture was kept simple, while bold pieces of artwork and graphic cushions helped bring the separate zoned areas together. The dining area overlooks the glass balustrade. “The best way to seat a large number of people in a small space is with a round table and a banquette – it was the obvious thing to do”. To complement its simple lines, the banquette was lit from behind with LED strips, throwing a gentle light up the wall.

The calm mood continues gently throughout the rest of the house. The first floor was transformed into a shower room with statement diamondshaped embossed tiles in tones of cream, cappuccino and chocolate. The second floor was reconfigured, from a series of separate rooms, into a stylish master suite, with an open-plan bathroom featuring a statement freestanding bath. “You want a sense of calm when you’re lying in bed, but that’s quite hard to achieve when you’re looking at a bathroom.” To create some privacy for the bathroom, an opaque glass sliding screen was installed between the loo and bathroom, while a bedroom aesthetic was emphasised in the bathroom area by selecting floor tiles that mimicked a rug pattern, as well as adding two bronze mirrors above the vanity unit. A freestanding bath was positioned facing the bedroom, offering views of the garden beyond and the textured porcelain wall tiles of the bathroom space sat easily next to the Clouds wallpaper from the Fornasetti range by Cole & Son in the bedroom area. An LED strip under the vanity unit, additional wall lights and small in-floor uplights around the bath completed the look. The master bedroom’s original features were highlighted. A Juliet

balcony was installed to celebrate the views, the teak ceiling was re-oiled to bring out its colour, the original small light was replaced with a large pendant to add balance, while an LED strip of lighting at the top of the wardrobes highlighted the ceiling further. “I admired the architecture of the building, and we celebrated the best elements of it and removed the bad elements,” Linda explains. “When you go up the new stairs, you gain a lovely view of the garden through the French doors and as you move further up the house you eventually arrive at a conservatory surrounded by trees, with amazing views over London. It has a very fresh feel – it’s a wonderful surprise.”

HomE comfortS Don’t buy a major purchase in isolation. Create a simple mood board and live with it for a while before buying everything. Layer light and always light upwards. Aim light at walls, which absorb more light than the floor, and will make a room feel brighter. If you want to emphasise something… Aim a light towards it. Home is… Where we feel happy and secure. bhomes.com | 49

JuMeirah Park Mouhanad Fadel, Residential Sales and Leasing Manager, on living in an exclusive, verdant neighbourhood

Jumeirah Park is a beautiful 370-hectare community, with approximately 2,000 independent three-, four- and five-bedroom villas. Located next to other prestigious developments, such as Jumeirah Islands and Jumeirah Heights, Jumeirah Park is easily accessible, with easy routes to Sheikh Zayed Road, Mohammed Bin Zayed Road and Al Khail Road. It is also a few minutes’ drive from Dubai Marina and it offers easy access to Business Bay and Abu Dhabi. Boasting lush parks and familyoriented amenities, its creatively designed villas come with double garages, spacious floor plans and are available in three styles: heritage, regional and legacy. With average plot sizes of more than 5,500 sq. ft., the villas offer plenty of privacy and space for a private swimming pool and/or a landscaped garden with a barbecue area. Comparable to the Meadows, but much newer on the scene, homes within this Emirates Living development – with their modern construction and high spec finish – are in particularly high demand. The three-bedroom properties are available in different sizes in terms of built-up area: ‘legacy small’ has a built-up area of 3,063 sq. ft.; and ‘legacy large’ has an area of 4,035 sq. ft. Fourbedroom villas offer a built-up area

of 4,335 sq. ft., while the largest villas stretch to 4,851 sq. ft., and the fivebedroom villas include a built-up area of 4,689 sq. ft. Comprising of nine districts, of which just a few villas are yet to be handed over, the neighbourhood includes a jogging and cycling track that courses along the gardens, sport’s court, children’s play area, children’s day care and youth centre. Other amenities include a community club house, gym, swimming pool, sauna and mosque, while Jumeirah Park Pavilion shopping mall is home to Geant Easy supermarket and a number of other shops, restaurants and cafés. Although there aren’t any buses available within Jumeirah Park, they do operate from Springs Town Centre, which is within 1km of Jumeirah Park Pavilion. Taxis are easily available. Dubai British School is located within Jumeirah Park, while Emirates International School, Dubai British Foundation School and Springs Town Center Nursery are among the well-equipped educational facilities located nearby. With its gorgeous landscaping, comfortable and stylish homes in spacious, relaxed settings and excellent facilities and easily accessible location, Jumeirah Park is a great choice for couples and families alike.

Principal of Al Salam Private School Kausor Amin-Ali on achieving exceptional results What sets your school apart?

We offer a British Curriculum and our academic results exceed many schools globally. The culture for holistic development, built on an ethos of academic and personal excellence is clear: we are consistently in the top five in the UAE for GCSE results. Our most recent Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) and Trends for International Mathematics and Science (TIMSS) results (2015) reveal that if Al Salam was a country, it would be ranked in the top 10 for primary education and number one for science and reading in secondary, above Singapore.

Tell us about your team…

I am very privileged to inherit a very established team developed by the founding – and Dubai’s longest serving – principal, Sue Johnston. The average tenure of our staff members is more than a decade, which has further provided stability and consistency. Staff respond to changes in regulation and readily adapt the learning environment to ensure relevance and readiness to offer all students the opportunity to fully immerse themselves with the skills and knowledge for life after

formal education. Our teaching ethos is child-centred to enable the very best for each and every child.

Is there anything else parents should know about? While Arabic is taught from FS, which includes some immersion in our nursery, we also teach French from Year 4. Plans are underway to offer other languages to support intended university pathways. Our focus is on enabling each child to make a successful contribution to society, through charitable and community service endeavours, and also through ethical awareness.

What do your key facilities include?

Our site is located in one of the most densely populated areas of Dubai. That said, we innovate to maximise the site. We have a purpose-built sports hall and two multi-use hard courts for sports as well as a multi-purpose hall for productions and presentations. We have a satellite dining area located away from the main school building, which serves students both in school and afterschool due to staggered finishing times. Our medical clinic supports all the initiatives by the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) and Dubai Health Authority (DHA) in ensuring a healthy and safe community for students and parents.

Cambridgeshire Nursery managing director Dinaz Khan on offering the right environment What sets your nursery apart?

Cambridgeshire Nursery cares. Our interactions with each child are personalised and compassionate. When parents trust us with their young children, we believe that we owe the child the care and nurturing that’s individual and unique to them. Even seemingly small matters related to children are overseen directly by the management. Our qualified staff’s passion for child development is complemented by periodic training on the key aspects of child management, learning and development. We are passionate about making children happy, and helping them become better citizens and future leaders for a better world – we oversee this quest with constant clarity. We follow the British Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum, and are inspired by the Howard Gardner theory of multiple intelligence.

who embody all the values we teach our children: because the best teachers lead by example. Beyond our staff, Cambridgeshire’s dedication is embodied in our huge support team that enables us to give the best to our children.

Is there anything else parents should know about?

Given the significance of Early Years’ education and the importance of having the right kind of environment for your child, we understand that choosing the right nursery for your child is carefully considered. We invite parents to visit and take a nursery tour during working hours on weekdays. However, in order to see the nursery operations in full swing, it is best to visit us between 9am and 11am. Working parents can also take the nursery tour on Saturdays by making an appointment.
