How long have you been in Dubai? I’m originally from Zimbabwe, but came here more than 25 years ago as a newlywed. James’ dad was working for Emirates as a pilot. There was nothing here at that time; Sheikh Zayed Road was only a four-lane track which you could turn off at any point. Why did you choose to live in Umm Suqeim? Emirates Airline accommodated all their staff in this area, so we were in company accommodation for 15 years, and since then I’ve always lived in Umm Suqeim. What kinds of people live in the area? Professionals do live here, but it’s very much a family area because most of the properties are villas. You have everything you need in this little radius, it’s just so October 2011

convenient. Dubai Airport is only 20 minutes away, Mall of the Emirates is only five minutes away, as is the beach, and there are plenty of schools including Kings’ School, Raffles, Dubai American Academy, Jess, Jumeirah College and Dubai College. It’s a great place for families. Do you rent the house or own it? I rent. I would love to be able to buy but you can’t really buy in this area as properties are not for sale, they all belong to locals. How do you make a rented apartment a home? A lot of people come over to Dubai with the idea that living here is only temporary, they live with that idea so they don’t spend money on furniture or won’t buy a painting for their wall. If you live in this temporary world it will never feel like home. I did that

at the beginning, but your attitude towards your home makes it or breaks it. Even if you are only here for a couple of years, you should really make it feel like your home and surround yourself with things that make you and your family feel comfortable, paint the wall or buy that sofa you have your eye on. You can always sell it at the end of your stay. I’ve really made this space a home, and I live in it like I own it. Would you ever buy property here? There is a level of uncertainty with the

property laws here. I don’t think it’s right that you should buy somewhere and invest millions and not have the right to live with your family here all the time. Friends of mine have a signature villa on the Palm but their 18-year-old son has to get a visa to live here. And there are further problems if you want your parents to live here. If they changed the property laws I’d buy here. What inspired the style of your home? I’m an interior designer by profession, so I’ve always worked with people’s homes. Plus I enjoy collecting things from different places. It’s just a case of knowing how to put it all together. My taste is very eclectic and I don’t like that showroom look which has two or three colours and everything matching. In my home the design incorporates art with different furniture from modern to antique. The side table, dining table and chairs are from my grandparents and are over 100 years old; we brought them over from Africa. At my gallery we do a combination of art, framing and antiques, while chests are our specialty. Whenever I see one that’s really unusual I add it to my collection. Most of them are from Oman, restore them by hand.

As an art collector, how do you select the right pieces for your home? I’ve been collecting since forever and I really like to buy original art even if it’s just a small print. The two pieces as you walk into the living room are by a young Iranian artist who shot to fame, I’ve been buying his work from the beginning. I bought one of these pieces for AED8,000 and his work now sells at Christie’s for between AED100,000 and AED120,000. I would never show any work in my gallery that I don’t like, or that I wouldn’t personally have in my house, and I never buy pieces simply because I think they will increase in value. What attracted you to this particular villa initially? The light was a big factor, I haven’t put curtains downstairs because there’s no need, no one can see in with the high fences in the garden. It’s an old house and it needed a lot of restoration, but the ceilings are high and the windows are huge. The newer villas tend to have lower ceilings and smaller windows. What’s your favourite piece in the house? The Gandhi sculpture is a limited edition by artist Debanjan Roy, and my favourite. I really admired Gandhi as a person – he was amazing – and I love the contradiction in the materials and bright red colour. His pose is also interesting, how he’s relaxing on the sofa. Furniture-wise I just love my century old chests, there’s something different about every single one. What advice would you give to people looking for a home in Dubai? Find a location that suits your lifestyle. If

you have small children, being close to a school is a plus; it’s great for children to have friends in the area. Travelling around Dubai is not very easy without a car and when my children were younger I didn’t like them using public transport on their own, so going to a friend’s house by foot is ideal. Are there any drawbacks to living in this area? Al Thanya Street is quite busy and, for some reason, this stretch can get a little noisy. Some people use it as a bit of a race track with their Ferraris, as there are no speed bumps and no cameras, there have been a few accidents. This would be the only thing I would change in the area. Where do you like to dine in the local vicinity? We tend to go to the Madinat and places such as Al Qasr Hotel or to some lesser known really nice restaurants in Barsha – my favourite Italian is called Pizza Pazza, they do great oven baked pizzas. There are lots of different restaurants dotted around including Bu Qtair – the delicious fish hut on the beach which serves up the catch of the day. What do you do in your leisure time? I work six days a week, but when I get time to relax I like to do some gardening and go to the beach – there are so many nice beach walks you can take around here. And I also enjoy swimming in the sea. At home, I love to have friends over in the winter as we have a big outside area where we can do dinner parties, and I really like to entertain. For me, Umm Suqeim really is a perfect place to relax.

Renting and buying Expats cannot currently buy in this area but there are plenty of options to rent a variety of villas from two to six bedrooms in size or apartments in complexes, including Al Kharbash (alkharbashgroup.com) in Umm Suqeim 3 which offers a pool, gym and mesmerising views out to sea. If you’re considering renting a villa, be sure to look out for extras that may include a sizable garden and maid’s quarters, one or two floors, terrace balconies, outdoor pools and shared gym facilities or beach access.

Shopping and a bite Nearby, the Madinat Jumeirah’s warren of restaurants offers a plethora of places to eat, including the excellent Pai Thai at Al Qasr Hotel (04 366 6730), the ever-busy Toscana (04 366 6730), which overlooks October 2011

snaking waterways, or Left Bank (04 368 6171), which serves up homely fare. Venture over to Mall of the Emirates, only a 10 minute drive from Umm Suqeim, where you can shop for high-street and designer fashion, or groceries at Carrefour (04 409 9000). Here you can also eat at a variety of outlets, including Chop Chop (04 341 3618), which serves Asian fare from Chinese noodles to Japanese, prepared teppinyaki-style, at a typical metal-plated grill. Or head to perennially popular More (04 3950967) for healthy, fresh dishes including pastries, pastas and salads. Back in Umm Suqeim, for no frills delicious Sri Lankan curry try Bu Qtair fish shack (located in the fishing village, a short walk from the open beach). Here they serve up the catch of the day in their signature curry sauce.v

Leisure time This area of town is the perfect place to enjoy your weekends, with endless activities on offer — from skiing at the world’s largest indoor ski slope Ski Dubai (skidxb.com), and surfing at Umm Suqeim open beach with Surf Dubai (surfingdubai.com), to working out at The Quay Health Club at the Madinat Jumeirah (jumeirah.com). Alternatively, relax at the Talise Spa, which offers a range of nutritional programmes as well as ayurvedic and homeopathic treatments. Meanwhile, your kids will love Wild Wadi, where they can shoot along flumes, drop down a giant plug hole, or ride a huge artificial wave spurting out seven tonnes of water per second (ridethewave.wildwadi.com). Tennis fans can indulge at the PBI Tennis Centre (pbitennis.com) next to the Burj Al Arab, where they offer expert instruction, in group or private lessons, club nights, social events and seven championship floodlit courts, where you can practice day or night. Art fans are also in luck; the nearby Ductac Community Theatre and Arts Centre (ductac.org) holds workshops in sketching, henna, creative writing, oil painting, drama, dance, and pottery on a weekly basis for both adults and children, and there’s a public library (theoldlibrary. ae) just opposite the centre with 14,000 English language books to read at your leisure.

Schooling This family orientated area offers an abundance of choice when it comes to schools, including Kings’ School (kingsdubai.com) for excellent primary education. If you’re looking for schools that teach the International Baccalaureate Diploma, you can try Jess (jess.sch.ae), Jumeirah College (gemsjc.com) and Dubai College (dubaicollege.org). For tiny tots, meanwhile, the well established Jebel Ali Nursery (jebelalinursery.com) has a branch in Umm Suqeim and offers full and part-day teaching.

tomatoes Certain varieties grow better than others in hot conditions. You’ll commonly find UAE supermarkets selling plump, large tomatoes at extortionate prices; this is because larger tomatoes are generally imported and don’t do well in very hot climates. Stock up on hardy cherry tomato seeds instead. Chillies These spicy morsels should never be kept below 12 ⁰C, so, during the winter desert months, either bring them inside or put them in a green house. Actually growing chillies is very straightforward; fill a pot with smooth compost ¾ full, place a few seeds lightly on top of the soil, making sure there is space between them. Then sprinkle some soil over the top of them. Ensure, also, to keep the peat damp as they grow. roCket Lettuce is a tricky crop to grow here, but you’ll be pleased to know that spicy rocket can stand the heat. Only a few seeds in a small bag of soil will produce handfuls of tasty leaves. Tip: cut them off when they’re small, as they wilt quickly. auBergine This plump vegetable absolutely hates the

Also, always apply a chemical sealant to hard surface paving like slate, sandstone and bradstone, to ensure longevity and protection from premature weathering and fading. BLUEBERRY AND TOASTED COCONUT CUPCAKES Makes a dozen cakes 125g unsalted butter 1 cup castor sugar 3 eggs ½ cup plain flour ½ cup self raising flour ⅓ cup crème fraiche ⅔ cup frozen blueberries

For the icing 1 ½ cups unsalted butter 1 ¾ cups icing sugar ½ tsp vanilla essence 2 tsp toasted powdered coconut

add the eggs slowly and mix in sifted flour. 2. Fold in the frozen blueberries and add the crème fraiche afterwards. Spoon the mixture evenly into cake cup lined trays. 3. Bake the mixture for 18-20 minutes at 180⁰C. 4. Get started on the icing by lightly toasting the powdered coconut in the oven. Then set it aside to cool. 5. Cream the butter and icing sugar until it is light and fluffy. Add vanilla essence and the room temperature toasted coconut. 6. Once the cupcakes are cooked and cool, spread the icing evenly on top.

MOCHA CUPCAKES Makes a dozen cakes 90g unsalted butter ½ cup caster sugar ½ tsp vanilla essence 2 eggs 1 cup self raising flour 15g cocoa powder 1tsp instant granulated coffee 1tsp hot water

1. Dissolve instant coffee in hot water, then set it aside to cool. 2. Cream butter, sugar, vanilla essence and add eggs slowly.

3. Mix in sifted flour and cocoa powder and add the coffee mixture last. 4. Spoon evenly into muffin cup lined trays. 5. Bake the mixture for 18-20minutes at 180⁰C. 6. To create the icing, melt the chocolate in a plastic bowl over a pan of softly simmering water, then set the gooey mixture to rest for a moment. 7. Cream the butter and sugar until it is light and fluffy, then mix in the melted chocolate. 8. When the cakes are ready and have cooled down, spread the smooth chocolate icing evenly over them. Then simply enjoy your creations.

SPICED BANANA AND DATE CUPCAKES Makes a dozen cakes 90g unsalted butter ½ cup soft light brown sugar 2 eggs 1 cup self raising flour ½ tsp bicarbonate of soda ½ tsp ground cinnamon ½ tsp ground ginger ⅔ cup ripe banana softened ⅓ cup natural yoghurt 2 tsp milk

For the icing 1 ½ cups unsalted butter 1 ¾ cups icing sugar 80g chopped dates ½ tsp cinnamon

1. Cream the butter and sugar then add the cinnamon and ginger. Add eggs slowly

and mix in sifted flour and bicarbonate of soda. 2. Mix in banana then yoghurt and milk and then spoon the mixture into muffin cup lined trays. 3. Bake the mixture for 18-20minutes at 180⁰C. 4. Create the icing by mixing the icing sugar, unsalted butter together until smooth, then add the chopped dates and cinnamon. 5. Once the cupcakes have cooked and cooled, lather the icing over the top. STRAWBERRY CUPCAKES Makes a dozen cakes 90g unsalted butter ½ cup caster sugar 2 eggs 1 cup self raising flour 2 tsp natural yoghurt 2 tsp strawberry jam

For the icing 1 ½ cups unsalted butter 1 ¾ cups icing sugar 2 tbsp of strawberry jam Sliced fresh strawberries ( approx 12 pieces) Icing sugar for dusting

1. Get creaming the butter and sugar together then add the eggs slowly and mix in the flour. 2. Next add the yoghurt into the cake mix and add the two tablespoons of strawberry jam. 3. Bake the mixture for 18-20minutes at 180⁰C. 4. For the icing stir the icing, cream, butter and sugar together until it’s light and fluffy, then add strawberry jam and mix it all together until in turns pink. 5. When the cakes are ready to come out of the oven, let them cool and spread the mixture evenly over them. 6. Slice a strawberry and place it on top then dust it with icing sugar and serve.
