Welcome to the September iSSue

O

ne of the main reasons that Pallavi Dean made the switch from architecture to interior design is that we spend the majority of our time indoors. Home is our sanctuary, where we enjoy spending time with friends and family and often, the place where we work and workout. As Pallavi advises (page 28), setting your priorities is essential. So, if your ideal home time is relaxing in the bath surrounded by candles, check out our bathroom special (page 30) for some inspiration. And if, like TV presenter Naoufer Ramoul, personal presentation is key to your career, then turn to our tour of her Jumeirah Lake Towers apartment on page 34. We also get advice on creating a home office space (page 20) from jewellery designer Mathilde Danglade. If you’re searching for something that is sharp yet sophisticated, monochrome (page 17) is always chic, whether in the form of stripes, spots or herringbone. Metallics (page 23), meanwhile, are perfect for giving a luxurious touch to any space. If you’re looking to move, beachfront community Jumeirah Beach Residence (page 48) is hugely popular because it offers something for everyone, from watersports fans to foodies.

Design a work area to make you crazy productive

“Your home office area needs to be a calming space to keep you focused while you work,” says Mathilde Danglade, jewellery designer and artistic director at concept store Comptoir 102. “A small room with a large window to maximise the natural light is a great starting point. Keep the palette neutral with just one or two pops of colour. My home office floors are painted white so the space can double up as a studio for photo shoots. Consider a simple yet spacious farm table for a desk; an interesting desk chair, such as a

Thonet; and an armoire for stashing your wireless printer and office supplies or a built-in desk with shelving. For lighting that ensures you can see what you’re doing clearly, I like pendant lights hanging above the desk. “Organisation is key. While there are tons of products available, I recommend a cable organiser and a hanging desk organiser – for my line of work, I need to be able to pin up a lot of things, as well as easily see upcoming projects and current project tasks. When I can see something all the time, I tend to be better at delivering it on schedule.”

Ask A designer Our interiors expert answers your queries and shares her hidden gems in the city

Fabidha Safar Rahman, interior designer at Design Matter I have an awkward alcove space on the upstairs landing area that I would like to transform into a quiet space for the children. What do you suggest? I would recommend transforming this area into a lovely, cosy corner for reading. All you need is to furnish it with a rug and some colourful floor cushions, bean bags or a daybed along with a short shelf stocked with books and crayons. You can ramp up the cool factor by putting a fabric teepee tent on the rug. Check out online parents’ store JustKidding (justkidding-me.com) or head to Indigo Living on Sheikh Zayed Road for inspiration.

permits, I like to add a bench or a couple of statement chairs on either side of a side table placed along one wall. If the space is narrow, a table or console with a display of tall vases with flowers or candles works well. Hang a feature artwork or a mirror to dress the wall and complete the look. To exploit the height, you can use a long feature chandelier or a cluster of pendants at different heights to instantly draw the eye upwards. If you’re a collector of art, photographs, artisan/folk masks or ceramics, the double-height space is your opportunity to display them as a collection without crowding the wall.

My little black book For paint MAS paints (mas-paints.com) has a huge collection of textured paint finishes that can be customised to create any colour. For regular paint, I love Benjamin Moore (benjaminmooore.com) and its infinite range of colours.

For Finishing touches When I’m short on time I like to shop at places that provide a variety of products and style options. Bloomingdale’s Home, Galleries Lafayette, Kare and Indigo Living all provide a onestop shop for everything, from accents and accessories to little touches that complete the space.

What’s your dreaM buy? Melt pendant lights (pictured) from Tom Dixon (tomdixon.net) and Little Palm stools by Khalid Shafar (khalidshafar.com).

I have a large bedroom and I would like to include a dressing area within it. How can I achieve this yet retain flow in the space? I have previously added a dressing space to a spacious bedroom by creating a wall-to-ceiling wardrobe and an in-built dressing table along a far wall, while situating the bed right in the centre of the room. A large 2.9m wide by 1.8m-high headboard provided privacy for the dressing area. It also simultaneously divided the large room visually, yet allowed access and light into the space. As an alternative to a bespoke design, you can make your own selection, and add a large room divider to help separate the spaces. How should I dress a doubleheight foyer between the dining and living areas to make it comfortable and luxurious? A double-height foyer is a designer’s dream come true and there are a number of ways to furnish it. If space

Design DNA

Our team of designers travel and study trends in fashion and home interiors to combine contemporary style with our Italian heritage, from ancient paintings, mosaics and frescoes to villas and museums.

Wallpaper or paint?

We prefer paint that is vintage inspired. Paint feels more authentic even if you can find amazing wallpapers that look like real, textured, painted walls.

Splurge on...

A big table that allows everyone to come together to chat over a plate of pasta. As Italians, eating with family and friends is an important part of our lives.

Colour combo to try

A neutral base – white, taupe, ecru – is an easy, calm base that works well with a touch of colour. Green, in all its shades, goes really well with neutrals.

Inspirations

We are mostly inspired by our home: Italy. We grew up in a Tuscan farmhouse and our

aim with our collections is to reproduce our country’s values and atmosphere, such as our sense of hospitality. A warm, inviting Italian home is often represented by an elegant, simple space and good cooking. We are also inspired by Italian art, music, architecture and landscapes.

Sea-inspired touches for your home

Top décor tip

Always make your space your own. This means that when decorating a house, a restaurant or a hotel, you always need a personal touch – something from the past and something from your own life, so you will feel at home rather than feeling like you’re in an anonymous, glossy showroom.

An unstoppAble force Interior designer Pallavi Dean on her work ethic, design experiences and giving back Interview: Lucy Land

B

orn and raised in Dubai, Pallavi Dean began her career in architecture before moving effortlessly into interior design, launching Pallavi Dean Interiors (PDI) in 2013. The award-winning design director also added product designer to her CV last year, having launched her ‘Tension’ furniture collection – which explores the cultural pressures she experiences through the physical tension between the materials in the range. The multi-talented designer reveals what makes her tick…

they needed a designer. Now they come to Dubai. PDI is only a few years old, yet we have projects in Tanzania, Uganda, Oman, London, Saudi Arabia and beyond. Dubai is home to the world’s busiest international airport – there is literally nowhere better to have a global business. To what do you credit PDI’s success? Two things. First, I’m relentless – I never take no for an answer and keep going until I find the perfect design solution. That’s easy to say but very hard to do, and requires a huge amount of emotional energy. Second, we don’t have set working hours at PDI. For years, our industry has made people sit at a desk for 10 to 12 hours a day and expected them to be creative. That’s nuts! Our model is definitely the future.

What sparked your love for interiors? I grew up in Dubai in the 1980s and ’90s, just as it was embracing design and about to make a splash on the world stage. Jumeirah Beach Hotel opened in 1997 when I was 16: it was the first time Dubai used architecture – blatantly and brazenly – to publicise itself around the world. More personally, my dad loved art and architecture, so took me to a drawing class every Friday morning from the age of seven. I studied architecture at university and spent my early career as an architect, but switched to interiors when I realised that people spend much of their time indoors. How would you describe your design philosophy? Our mantra is ‘create experiences through design’. For a home, that means designing experiences the family will cherish: cooking leisurely weekend breakfasts together; having the kids’ friends over for playdates; hosting stylish dinner parties; meditation and yoga – whatever’s important to you. How are you finding the local design scene? Well, we have a design scene, which we didn’t 10 years ago. Spaces like Dubai Design District (d3) and Alserkal Avenue provide the backbone, while design fairs, such as Downtown Design and INDEX, provide a platform. Emirati designers, including Khalid Shafar and Aljood Lootah, are flourishing. Increasingly, I’m focused on mentoring other designers. I’m going back to teach part time at my alma mater American University of Sharjah this semester, which is all part of giving back to the design community that has given me so much. How have you found the transition from working on UAEbased projects to going international? Until very recently, clients in, for example, Saudi Arabia or Africa would automatically go to London or Singapore if

28 | bhomes.com

What has been your most challenging project so far? A beauty salon that just opened at Jumeirah Al Naseem hotel, called Mrs B. The space is the size of a small one-bedroom apartment, yet it feels open and expansive because we created a mezzanine floor (despite everyone telling us it was impossible). What are you currently reading? They are both design books: Dezeen Book of Interviews by Marcus Fairs; and This Human: How to Be the Person Designing for Other People by Melis Senova. What is your favourite piece of furniture? Moroso Double Zero dining chairs. What is the biggest interior design mistake people make? They find a sofa they quite like that’s on sale, and suddenly this random hunk of wood and foam is dictating every design decision. Set out shopping after you’ve chosen your look. What is your top décor tip? Listen and set your priorities. Ask everyone who will live in the space (including yourself) to close their eyes and imagine the perfect moment. If it’s lying in a bath with candles and soft music, blow your budget on a spa-like bathroom. If it’s cooking for friends and entertaining, invest in a kitchen that will be the beating social heart of your home. pallavidean.com

TV presenter Naoufer Ramoul’s home in Jumeirah Lake Towers is a sanctuary of soft colours and rich layers Words: Lucy Land

W

hen TV presenter Naoufer Ramoul moved to the UAE seven years ago, she immediately fell in love with Jumeirah Lake Towers. “I liked the concept of high-rise buildings overlooking lakes, even though the area wasn’t complete at that time. There weren’t any traffic signals or greenery and there were only a few shops and supermarkets yet I preferred the location to Dubai Marina and The Springs, knowing that it would develop very quickly,” says Naoufer, who produces and hosts weekly political debate show Qabil li Niqash. She was right. After six years of renting in the fast-developing community, Naoufer decided to buy her own apartment. “My home hunt lasted approximately six months until I found the rare pearl,” she enthuses. Coincidentally she found her dream home in a building nearby, in the same cluster and it even shared the identical apartment number to the one that she’d been living in for the previous six years. “It has everything I need – two bedrooms, a storage room, a laundry room. Plus, it was fully upgraded and offers a beautiful view of the lake.” The light and airy apartment also boasts a living room that opens up onto a balcony with a wonderful view of Sheikh Zayed Road and the lawn of the Emirates Hills Golf Course. As soon as Naoufer saw the

36 | bhomes.com

apartment, she knew it was the one. She also immediately knew that she wanted interior design company Harf Noon Design Studio to decorate her home when she spotted its work on Instagram. She had even taken the company's founder Nisrine El Lababidi Moghraby along to some of her viewings. Once the home was chosen, Nisrine sat down with Naoufer and asked her plenty of questions so that she could better understand her personality, as well as her interests, likes and dislikes, the way she spends her time in different rooms and daily routine within the space. The resulting brief was straightforward: Naoufer wanted her apartment to be her sanctuary, a place she could share with her cat and could entertain easily without the need for too much space. Before Nisrine proceeded, they discussed a couple of images that Naoufer had saved, including one of an Ebarza Egg Chair, and one of a large, contemporary dressing room. The apartment opened immediately onto its new, open-plan kitchen, so a beautiful painting of a grey mare was placed on the opposite wall to create a sense of an entrance. “The mare is very feminine and solid, courageous and patient, loyal and friendly – in a way it represents my own personality,” says Naoufer. The painting was anchored with a small console from Luz De Luna

and styled with warm metals, while the entrance set the colour palette for the entire home with its elegant, soft hues. A 72-inch television became the focal point for the living room. “I can’t live without it,” Naoufar admits. The space was designed for entertaining with plenty of seating, while soft tones were contrasted with a pop of colour from the Ebarza Egg chair and a rug from Carpet Centre. The kitchen had already been remodeled by Meiwe’s Kitchens with all appliances from Miele, so only the backsplash and some doors were toned down from vibrant orange to a beautiful greyish green that complemented the overall neutrals of the apartment. The balcony was styled with decorative greens, lots of candles, colourful cushions and a throw, while another painting of a horse was added to the master bedroom as inspiration for the rest of the

hues in the room. Layers and textures were added to create a serene and luxurious feel. To complement Naoufar’s TV career, for which personal presentation is crucial, the second bedroom was transformed into an all-white dressing room. “We did a bit of an IKEA hack by making an island of drawers placed back to back and finishing it with a glass top,” Nisrine explains. A little desk was added to the back, which offered space to work, when needed, and a single grey IKEA bed was also installed. The dressing room was styled with perfume bottles on a mirrored tray, simple window treatments and a huge hanging IKEA burst lightfoot along with a selection of pretty orchids. “I collected dozens of images of luxurious spacious closets for years wishing that one day I would have my own,” Naoufar reveals. Sometimes, the best things come to those who wait.

elebrating its 20th century history, red brick apartment building Bushwick, located on a treelined street in Brooklyn, New York, has recently been sensitively restored. With its bold architecture and distinctive leaded copper mansard, the apartments feature exposed brick walls and original elements of the building – including sash windows, tile flooring, baseboards, banisters and moldings – and are decorated with local historical photos. Alongside these character-filled elements, modern design features have been incorporated, such as the internal exposed steel staircases, SMEG fridges, colourful patterned floor tiles and bespoke fixtures and fittings. International architects The Design Agency along with Brooklyn-based Opera Studio and local designer William Jude partnered with global boutique residential company Node on the designled apartments. The concept, however, went beyond blending historical and contemporary design. Node has tapped into the zeitgeist with its fully furnished, interior-designed, Instagram-ready apartments that are ready to move into, while also offering an authentic community. Its housing is designed for asset-light professionals, who are looking for stress-free housing, yet want a place to call home and to engage in neighbourhood life. “The community concept was one of the main reasons I chose to move here,” says resident Oliver Ashworth, who was new to the area and moved into his new home with just two suitcases of belongings. “Our ethos is to provide residents with a consistent community in locations where they can connect, rather than simply rent a unit and go it alone,” explains Anil Khera, Node’s founder. “We are creating a family of residents, who are encouraged to socialise together in communal areas.” Before the interior design work could begin, however, the existing foundation needed additional support with concrete reinforced with rebar. Steel channels, which were left exposed in some areas, to support the weight of the additional floor, were added and incorporated as a mansard roof, in honour of the existing historical façade. The vertical enlargement was built out of c-joists and plywood decking, while the existing joists in the building were replaced with new steel c-joists. “Steel frame headers support the weight of the new steel stairs, which highlights the industrial history of Brooklyn,” reveals Anil. When the walls

and floors were stripped back, The Design Agency discovered historical gems that they wanted to incorporate into the design. For example, the front entry vestibule had a stunning black and white mosaic pattern that was honoured and incorporated into the design proposal, original banisters were kept in the communal corridor and ceiling rosettes, found in the suites, were highlighted as a historical reference. The team sought to inject character, colour, modern touches and functional components that would make shared living a breeze. They also wanted to include artisan touches. “Creating a distinct style for the brand was essential to the success of the project,” Anil says. To this end, a swing chair, from boutique designer Michelle Varian’s store, furnishes a nook in the hallway; open shelving keeps the kitchen organised and is also great for storage; freestanding islands allow for conversation but also can be utilised as another kitchen surface and extra storage. Inspired by the artists who influence the neighbourhood and their lifestyle, the design team created a playful and youthful space. “We were focused on creating thoughtful touches throughout the property, always aiming to make it feel like a home, and the challenge was bringing the whole concept together for a unified and cohesive

aesthetic,” Anil says, adding: “We collaborated with the architects, interior designers, partners, contractors, and sub-contractors – bringing in all of their ideas and incorporating them successfully was the biggest and most rewarding challenge.” Their approach was to have key elements run throughout the property, while retaining a differentiated and curated aesthetic for every room and bedroom. The Design Agency and William Jude incorporated artistic touches with accessories and art, along with furnishing each apartment with a colourful yet classic style and design. To add personality, each apartment has a different colour SMEG fridge and Froy retro sofa, and unique, local pieces were bought from artists and vintage stores. High-quality pieces were included, from mattresses by Casper to NEST temperature controls, a Butterfly wireless intercom and SONOS speakers. Convenience was of paramount importance along with a communal focus, so open kitchens have custom-made islands, there are plenty of bookshelves, made from reclaimed wood, and the living spaces are layered to give them a bright and airy quality. Bathrooms are softer with heritage-inspired styling and bedrooms are homely, with comfortable beds and headboards, wardrobes, bedside

table lamps and desks for working. Brooklyn style and history influenced the communal areas, with items sourced locally as much as possible. The residents’ lounge offers an escape with deep colours, relaxed seating and heritage Flavor Paper wallpaper to create a conversation and reference back to the history of the building. With the rooftop and backyard, The Design Agency kept design elements relaxed and playful with colourful outdoor furniture, bench seating and string lighting for a day to night transition. “The backyard is the perfect place to host barbeques – the recycled timber fence and built-in seating encourages residents to gather as much as possible with plenty of space for friends,” Anil says. By honouring the building’s history and its local culture and people, Bushwick offers an authentic experience as well as convenience. “We love seeing people’s reactions to the spaces,” Anil says, simply. “I love the street parties, outdoor communal areas and being among the arty, unique people, who live here,” Oliver enthuses. The property is Node’s first boutique residence and it is perhaps unsurprising that the company will launch two more Brooklyn residences this autumn, followed by residences in Los Angeles and Dublin next year. bhomes.com | 45

JuMeirah Beach residence Rita Mouawad, Senior Residential Consultant, on the beachfront community’s allure

Jumeirah Beach Residence (JBR) is a waterfront residential community located along a 1.7 km., 2 sq. km. stretch of the Arabian Gulf shoreline in Dubai Marina. Launched in August 2002 by developer Dubai Properties, the Dhs6 billion project was completed in 2010. The development contains 40 towers (35 of which are residential and five are hotels) that accommodate approximately 15,000 people. These include a total of six residential blocks: (in order from east to west) Shams, Amwaj, Rimal, Bahar, Sadaf and Murjan – the Arabic names are related to the beach. The varied, affordable community of 6,917 apartments include studios starting from 600 sq. ft.; one-bedroom apartments varying from 750 sq. ft. up to 1,200 sq. ft.; two-bedroom properties ranging from 1,200 sq. ft. up to 1,700 sq. ft.; three-bedroom apartments from 1,700 sq. ft. up to 2,200 sq. ft.; and 5,500 sq. ft. penthouses. Other types of properties include terraced, duplex, and loft apartments with gardens. The area has attracted many global investors as it is located on the beach, so every apartment has access to a beautiful long strip of coastline. A popular spot for tourists, the cafés and shops running along the shoreline lends a Miami Beach feel to it. The area boasts a large cinema complex offering 10 screens, including one outdoor screen; a beach club; a park; and a watersports hub. There are a lot of amenities on offer along the main thoroughfares

of The Walk and The Beach, while Bluewaters Island – situated just off the coast – is currently under construction. The Walk is a buzzy boulevard with boutiques, restaurants and a small outdoor Covent Garden Market offering jewellery, homeware and food stalls, with street entertainers keeping visitors amused. Comprising four distinct plazas, The Beach is a retail and entertainment complex that occupies the bulk of the beachfront between the Hilton and Sheraton hotels. Once completed, Bluewaters Island will comprise hotels, apartments, villas, dining and entertainment facilities, and Dubai Eye, a 210-metre-tall Ferris wheel, which will be the tallest in the world when finished. The island will be linked by a highway to Sheikh Zayed Road, and a pedestrian bridge and cable car to JBR, while a monorail system will also link it to Dubai Metro. There are seven nurseries located in JBR, including two award-winners: Toddler Town and Kidville Nursery; and long-established Jebel Ali Nursery. Nearby schools include GEMS Wellington International School, and Raffles International School. Easily accessible by taxi, tram and bus, JBR offers a glamorous community with beach, pools, bars, cafés, supermarket, banks, hotels and plenty of visitor parking. Its plaza level, which connects the buildings, and numerous parks and play areas, make this area particularly attractive for outdoors types.

Founder Bernadette King-Turner discusses Indigo Valley Nursery’s organic approach What sets your nursery apart from others in the city?

Indigo Valley Nursery belongs to the Beautiful Minds Nurseries group, which is privately owned. Offering a Reggio Emilia inspired UK Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum, we believe that we have a major community responsibility in imparting ethical information and knowledge to each child and parent, and we are sensitive to upholding the integrity of the United Arab Emirates’ multiculturalism and practices. The curriculum is taught in English, Arabic and Chinese Mandarin. Indigo Valley Nursery has the addition of a Specialised Early Learning Support Unit to care for children requiring extra learning. There is also a strong focus on social collaboration and the children search out their knowledge through their own investigations.

All classroom teachers are qualified in teaching and/or nursing. We provide equal opportunities for all staff, children and their families.

Is there anything else parents should know about?

With our eco-friendly and organic approach, we understand that a naturebased pedagogy is a major benefit for each young learning and growing mind. To support each child’s optimum health and learning, the nursery gardens are an extension of the classrooms. These include our award-winning organic vegetable gardens, which are maintained by the staff, children and parents. Nature-based loose parts, play and learning equipment are preferred over plastic toys and the nursery follows a ‘no throw away plastic’ policy. The children form an understanding of themselves and their place in the world through their interactions with others and, to that purpose, children frequently visit the elderly at Dubai Al Mamzar Community Health Center.
