Welcome to the JANuAry issue
I
t’s time to take stock and reflect on the year gone by in order to figure out which elements of our lives we want to retain and which we want to change moving forward. The home provides the perfect starting point. As Helen McGuire, founder of women’s empowerment platform Hopscotch.ae, said during a tour of her Jumeirah Park villa (page 36), your home represents your life in all its colours. Taking risks, discovering new inspirations and listening to our intuition will help ensure we create a comfortable, personalised space. Refreshing the decorative accents can be therapeutic. After all, it’s often the little things that make the biggest difference. Whether your New Year resolutions for your home include designing a walk-in wardrobe (page 22), incorporating sustainable elements (page 23) or shaking things up with some playful shapes (page 25), we have these and plenty more inspiration to get you motivated. In the lead-up to this issue, I particularly enjoyed interviewing some inspiring women, including interior designer and founder of XBD Collective Ellen SØhoel (formerly Bishop; page 23). Her d3-based studio reflects her style: luxurious, elegant and warm. Meanwhile, Beirut-based interior and product designer Nada Debs (page 30) had plenty of heartwarming stories, including bonding with an 85-year-old weaver in Afghanistan. And finally, if you’re looking for a new home in an iconic location, check out our guide to Palm Jumeirah (page 49).

Looking for some fresh European design inspiration? Dubai will play host to the first Ventura Project in the Middle East in March 2018 at annual design exhibition INDEX. Showcasing 45 carefully selected up-and-coming and established European designers, the emirate will follow Milan, New York, Berlin and London in presenting Ventura Dubai. “I love how the show connects the world with the Middle East design community. The fact that INDEX thinks about making the event appeal to an audience well beyond its own borders really speaks to me,” says Margriet Vollenberg, graduated designer and founder of Organisation in Design, which is behind the concept.

“There are a number of key functions your closet needs to perform in order to help you create a comfortable dressing space,” explains Lemya Osman, regional communication and interior design manager at IKEA. “These include ample storage for freshly laundered clothes, organised storage to help you find things more easily, a seat, a mirror, easy access to clothes and some space to move around. “Hanging space can be used more efficiently by sorting clothes according to length. For example, dresses and coats can be hung at one end, and shirts

and jackets at the other end. This leaves room below the shorter clothes for more storage. For drawers, accessories such as scarves, belts, tights and hosiery can be organised in individual compartments to give an instant overview. Meanwhile, shoes can be stored in shallow shoe cabinets to save space and reduce clutter. “Integrated automatic wardrobe lighting will ensure you see everything that’s inside. An affordable option is to install battery-operated lamps inside the doors. Illuminating your closet from the outside will light up the entire area, but ceiling lights in the bedroom should be directed away from the bed so they don’t cause any glare.”

Ellen SØhoel (formerly Bishop), founder of XBD Collective I want to incorporate sustainable elements into my home. What do you recommend? Installing smart home technology enables you to have customised control over your heating, ventilation and air conditioning, lighting, music and anything else electrical, which will save energy and, in turn, reduce utility bills. Meanwhile, solar energy is hot on the UAE’s renewable energy agenda. Another element to consider is using natural materials as much as possible in your home. Engineered hardwood uses solid wood, but is constructed differently to solid hardwood and is better suited to our extreme weather conditions. Just check the wood comes from a certified sustainable forest. Windows also play a role in saving energy in your home. Double glazing combined with frames that are recessed into the floor will allow you to keep the use of air conditioning to a minimum during the hot summer months.
with personal black and white or colour photographs or an artwork to create a personal gallery feature. Have fun with it. I would like to give my villa a luxury hotel-like feel. What should be my starting point? Start with the entrance area to create a statement and introduce the personality of your home. Oversized lighting will immediately create an impact. Another great way to elevate your space is to clad the walls with texture, such as leather panels with a metal strip in between; a metal mesh; or a beeautiful, textured wallpaper. Ensure your seating doesn’t get lost in the space. Consider organic shapes, such as placing a beaten up sofa in the corner or positioning circular seating in the middle of the space. Edra Furniture produces some fantastic sofa designs.

My living space needs personalising. How do I create a perfect gallery wall? There are numerous ways to do this and the most common is to use a variety of frames for black and white photos. However, I think this is a little passé. I suggest cutting a 5cm niche into the wall and creating a frame of approximately 30cm around it so that you create a shallow groove to allow for two layers of textures illuminated with indirect lighting. In that groove, you can attach a panel made from back-painted glass or that has wallpaper or leather stretched over it. Frame the panel with LED lights and paint the wall behind it. You can then cover that whole wall bhomes.com | 23

Design DNA
I believe in creating products and spaces that are functional, but also connect emotionally with people so it’s important to find the balance between function and personality. A quote I live by is, “Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful,” by William Morris.
Wallpaper or paint?
I like to use a combination of the two, with smaller spaces of textured and patterned wallpaper balanced out with larger areas of solid, painted colour.
Colour combo to try
As a person who loves to experiment with colour, I tend to keep a neutral grey or crisp white background and play around with colour and materials through soft furnishings, wall art and décor items. Currently, I’m loving monochrome schemes with gold foil metallic accents.
Where do you go for design inspiration? I am fortunate enough to travel to many
design shows and exhibitions all over the world as part of my job, but I can honestly say that a lot of my design inspiration also comes from taking the time to absorb my everyday journeys and surroundings, such as going to a new coffee shop or taking a walk on the beach.
Splurge on…
I recommend spending on your sofa, which is a key item in any home and worth investing in because it will be used almost every day.

ConneCting the dots Interior and product designer Nada Debs on craft, collaborating and discovering her identity through design Interview: Lucy Land Raised in Japan by Lebanese parents, Nada Debs studied interior architecture at the Rhode Island School of Design in the United States before starting her custom furniture company in the UK. She returned to her Lebanese roots, moving to Beirut in 2000, where she has been applying her multicultural approach to Middle Eastern produced design ever since…
What is your greatest achievement so far? My work is a reflection of my international background: it draws different elements together. However, growing up in Japan, I felt like an outsider at school and then again, as an adult, among Arabs. When I arrived in Beirut, everyone was against having things produced in the Middle East. I discovered a lack of pride in regional identity and an aspiration for Western design, which was seen a status symbol. I helped change people’s mindsets and get them to believe in themselves.
What drives you? Connecting with people, whether with craftspeople or clients. It’s the collaboration that leads to the creation of a product.
How is this best revealed? A lot of government offices ask me to design for them, which means they want to show other heads of state around the world that we have a modern Arab identity.
What is your design ethos? Keep the craft going, but add a modern element that makes it relevant to today’s lifestyle. Tell us about your recent collaboration with handmade rug and carpet manufacturer and supplier FBMI… The You and I collection is inspired by Sufi poet Jala al-Din Rumi, who said “Apparently two, but one in soul”. I wanted to bring together traditional and modern styles while retaining the identity of each. It’s like an ideal relationship in which each person retains their identity but, together, they create a new element – it’s why I’ve given each rug a quirky name. I’ve also ensured the rugs have a proper seating arrangement around them. What’s your favourite rug from the collection? You’re Too Square for Me – I like the asymmetry of the design, with its pentagon shape. Why is handcrafted design so important? It gives meaning to design. It’s important to retain the art of craft design and its sense of identity. It’s also crucial for the craftspeople to feel safe and to be treated well so that they are relaxed when they work. The FBMI-employed women weavers in Afghanistan have medical cover, access to education and are paid well. When a woman is independent, she has self-respect, which is really important.
30 | bhomes.com
What is your advice on incorporating a Middle Eastern style into a home interior? Use Middle Eastern or other craft elements, such as patterns, as an accent so that it doesn’t become clichéd. Add these touches throughout your home rather than in one place so that they tie the whole space together and it’s easy on the eye. What are your top décor rules? Invest 30% of your budget on lighting because light and colour make or break a space. Use different shades of light throughout your home and play around with different variations of wood – light and dark. Be flexible and add your personal touch to your home. There’s nothing more beautiful than having a warm, personal space and getting to know someone through their home. What’s next? As well as creating a retail space within my studio, I’m moving into a more collaborative environment. I have the tools to help each client find their own identity in design. nadadebs.com; fbmi.ae

“L
ast year was a slightly crazy time for us,” admits Helen McGuire. She isn’t exaggerating. She launched Hopscotch. ae, an empowerment platform that helps women find flexible work in the region; and, together with her husband, Justin, sold a property in London (where they previously lived before moving to Dubai in 2012), bought their current villa in Jumeirah Park, and had their second child, Arlo, who wasn’t fond of sleeping. Previously renting in Umm Suqeim, Helen and her husband wanted to invest in a home of their own, with ample space in a family-friendly neighbourhood top of their wish list. “Our chosen home was brand new and the location is perfect for us – quiet with plenty of space, but still very connected to the city and close to Dubai Marina and Sheikh Zayed Road.” The children’s room provided the starting point for the interior design. “We had the cappuccino and cream stripes (all the paints were from Jotun) in our daughter Clementine’s room in our previous house and replicated those as they worked well with her bedroom furniture and colours”. For Arlo’s bedroom, Helen created a

cosy space by dividing the walls with a pale grey paint above a darker grey hue. When it came to making-over the living areas, Helen researched colours and materials on Pinterest. “I wanted to create a very warm and earthy downstairs to ensure that the space is relaxing, but not boring,” she reveals. She focused on wool, metal, wood, plenty of plant life, with a pale green hue for the walls, and pale pink highlights throughout the area. For the first floor, she wanted to push boundaries a bit more, while continuing the earthy tones of the ground floor. “We chose a richer pink and a deep sea green colour, which worked really well.” Meanwhile, the kitchen and bathrooms have remained the same since Helen moved in, but with accessories in pale pink, dark grey and white, such as towels and dishes to match the home’s palette. Lighting was key throughout the home. Keen to avoid harsh lighting, Helen plumped for Edison bulbs in a variety of big and bold styles to complete the rooms. “I love the light they create,” she enthuses. For the furniture, Helen kept many of her purchases for her previous home and

spent a lot of time trawling the malls for the bigger pieces, such as sofas, shelving and the dining table, checking out the likes of West Elm, Crate & Barrel, THE One and Home Centre, as well as heading online. Her resulting buys are an eclectic mix of styles and price points that complement her chosen colour scheme, while her home accessories, including cushions, are a mix of old and new buys. “I’ve picked them up from all sorts of different places. Some were rather pricey, while others were as little as Dhs20.” The diverse artworks, meanwhile, have been collected over time and reflect the family’s personal life. “Some have been painted by friends; other stuff was chosen here in Dubai, in Asia or while travelling, including to Sri Lanka – we frame them when we get home.” Helen spends most of her time at home in the living room, either playing with the children, relaxing or dining with her family. “It’s also proven to be a good zone for entertaining, particularly during the winter months when we can have the doors wide open.” Helen has clearly created a home for all occasions. “I love the opportunities it has given us,” she says. “We can work, play and chill here and it feels like a little oasis in the hectic day-to-day of our lives. It also means our English bulldog, Percy, has loads of outdoor space and occasionally a spot on the sofa.”

The homeowners wanted the colours and artwork to echo the city’s vitality
W
hen the current owners first saw the details of their contemporary apartment in Madrid, they initially turned it down. The estate agent persuaded them to see it, however, and the British couple immediately fell in love with the view from its balcony. It made the perfect holiday apartment for the family, who have lived in various cities in the world, including the Spanish capital for three years with their children, where they continue to have friends. Their affinity to Madrid informed the design details. “The starting point for the design was the open-plan living and dining room, with its amazing view over the city,” says interior designer Deborah Heath. In particular, the couple wanted the vibrancy of Madrid to be reflected in the apartment. “They wanted the colours and artwork to echo the city’s vitality and to avoid cluttering the space with furniture,” she reveals. “Madrid can be very hot in the summer and really cold in the winter, so while the colour palette was to be predominantly cool, pops of warm colours were also to be included.” The décor for the living and dining space sets the tone of the décor for all the other rooms. Deborah balanced the dark wooden floors and doors with cool grey colours on the walls, using a combination of paint and wallpaper. Away from the living area, there was little natural light, so lighting was key. The resulting lighting plan included double tilting-down lighters, combined with up-floor lighters in glass niches as well as occasional chandeliers for a touch of glamour. Table lamps provided an additional layer. “The key was to offer as much flexibility as possible, so we installed four lighting
44 | bhomes.com
circuits, all of which are dimmable,” says Deborah. There is a circuit for the dining area, one for the pendant light, another for the lounge area, and a fourth for the lamps. There is also a variety of mood lighting on the patio, including the floor of all four corners as well as above the seating area. The furniture style and design is classically modern. Clean lines combined with textured fabrics, velvets, wools, chenilles and suede have created beautiful layers, while the discreet pattern is kept to a minimum, allowing the artwork to take centre stage and be the focal point. The kitchen was small, but as storage wasn’t a priority, the couple wanted equipment that reflected a holiday feel, including a coffee machine and drinks fridge. The resulting white and grey cupboard design is unfussy and handleless to streamline

the space. There, lighting plays an equally important role, with a variety of strategically placed solutions, from task to gentle background lighting, illuminating the space and providing different atmospheres. To unify the design, the same wood (walnut) as the floors and doors was used in the walk-in wardrobe for the master bedroom and the other three bedrooms. A glamourous touch was given to the master bedroom with Malabar wallpaper by Cole & Son for the feature wall. This element of elegance continues throughout the bedroom, with the soft grey and silver colour scheme extending to the headboard, furniture, lamps and artwork with mirrored frames. The three bathrooms and cloakroom are also kept simple. A wooden

floor provides contrast against the white vanities and tiles. Together, Deborah and the couple chose not to dress any of the windows throughout the apartment. “There are external shutters operated by remote control and we felt that adding curtains or blinds would add a level of fuss that wasn’t necessary,” she says. It also meant more of the budget could be spent on artwork and the beautiful Chinese silk rug. The choice of artworks was inspired by those in the family’s London home. “The team and I recommended a few large pieces rather than many smaller items, so they would have more impact,” Deborah says. “We gave them a variety of artworks to choose from, by relatively unknown international
artists and, together, we selected our favourites. I had seen the painting of David Bowie that had sold at an exhibition, but I knew the couple would love it. We contacted art consultancy Quintessa and commissioned another.” With its classically modern, unfussy style, the apartment offers the perfect holiday home. Maintenance is kept to a minimum. For example, the outdoor furniture on the balcony, which provides a place to relax and dine, can be left outside all year round. However, luxury hasn’t been compromised – key pieces of artwork and bold colour accents provide character and add the finishing touch. “The best reward for this project, is that the family loved it,” Deborah says. designbydeborah.co.uk

palM JuMeirah Kristina Titova, Residential Consultant at Better Homes, on living on world-renowned Palm Jumeirah
Dubai’s iconic landmark is a manmade residential island community, which looks like a stylised palm tree from above. Synonymous with luxury, Palm Jumeirah’s fronds cater to exclusive villas with private beaches, while its trunk and crescent is home to lowrise apartment buildings, hotels and numerous beach resorts. One of the island’s most famous landmarks is Atlantis The Palm Dubai, with its seashell–pink arches and turrets, and there’s a host of other international five-star hotels, including Fairmont The Palm, Jumeirah Zabeel Saray and One&Only The Palm. Each brings its own restaurants, bars, clubs and swimming pools. Meanwhile, a futuristic-looking W Hotel & Residences The Palm, is among the many hotels opening soon. Nakheel Mall is also currently taking shape. Located in the heart of the archipelago, it will offer five storeys of shopping, rooftop dining, cinemas, leisure facilities and, of course, VIP entrances. Perhaps most notably, a St. Regis hotel is being built right into The Palm Tower, a 52-storey tower alongside the mall. The new wave of attractions will benefit from the Palm’s premier address. Located a few minutes’ drive from Dubai Marina, The Greens, Dubai Media City and Knowledge Village,
the neighbourhood is also a short drive from Mall of the Emirates and Madinat Jumeirah. There are good public transport links throughout the island, including bus routes, Palm Monorail, water taxis, and private taxis, which are present at the many hotels, beach resorts and residential buildings. The properties on Palm Jumeirah are known for their luxurious finish and spaciousness. There is also a wide range available, from studio apartments to four- and five-bedroom penthouse apartments and hotel apartments, penthouses, townhouses in residential buildings, and villas, with their own private beach. Studio apartments are approximately 500+ sq. ft.; one-bedroom apartments range from 1,100 to 1,300 sq. ft.; two-bedroom apartments offer 1,600 to 1,900 sq. ft.; three-bedroom properties have 2,100 to 2,300 sq. ft; townhouses have a built-up area of approximately 3,000+ sq. ft; and villas boast 5,000 sq. ft. on average. Most developments offer facilities that include state-of-the-art gyms, swimming pools and lazy rivers with access to spas, beaches and fine dining outlets. While the main attraction of Palm Jumeirah is the waters of the Arabian Gulf, there is always a buzz around the continually developing community.

Principal of Monroe’s Nursery, Sharron Baker, on providing a caring curriculum for children What sets your nursery apart?
A lot of time, commitment, energy and nurturing goes into bringing Monroe’s Nursery to life on a daily basis. Consequently, the Jumeirah Beach Residence-located nursery is thriving. It has gained exceptional reviews from parents and is very well respected within the community. We consistently monitor the needs and preferences of our children. We have learnt they particularly enjoy physical activities. Therefore, our newly designed children’s gym has been a huge success in their development across all seven (personal, social and emotional; physical; communication and language; literacy; expressive arts and design; mathematics; and understanding of the world) areas of the Early Years Curriculum.
