Welcome to the July issue

I

ndia is now top of my must-visit list. It’s where both metalware, home accessories and fine jewellery designer Michael Aram (page 26) and Jumeirah 3-based pop artist Maria Iqbal (page 32) met those who inspired their creative directions. In the late 1980s, Michael discovered artisans making extraordinarily beautiful objects yet approaching their work in a humble way. Fast forward more than two decades and Maria met artists and entrepreneurs in India who helped her find a way to express her artistry in a commercial way. With trend forecaster Scarlet Opus recently predicting that ecofriendly designs will be hot next year, we thought we’d get ahead and showcase the most stylish sustainable buys for your home (page 21). The Scandinavians, however, were already discovering the beauty of nature-led design (page 14) in the 1950s. If you’re looking for a green neighbourhood to live in, then check out our guide to Motor City (page 45). It might be a motorsportsthemed community, but it also offers beautiful landscaped gardens, water features, cobbled streets and walkways in a relatively traffic-free environment.

Consider using natural materials such as wood,

stone, marble, glass and those made from recycled plastic. Also, using wallpaper is an environmentally-friendly way to cover walls and you can be very creative with it. Neutral tones such as grey, beige and earth tones are popular because they reflect the tones that are found in nature throughout Scandinavia.”

creating a terrarium

Enjoy an on-trend indoor plant set-up

Terrariums are having a revival so if you have a green thumb and minimum outdoor space, why not create your personal mini-world of lush plants? “You’ll need good potting soil and gravel to start your terrarium,” says Dubai-based florist and plant specialist Cheryl Ann Cox, founder and CEO of Moss + Myrtle. “Having steady hands and a creative vision for the layout also helps. Make sure that the container allows in sunlight and has enough space for the plants to breathe,” she advises. “You’ll need miniature indoor plants and, for this region, plants that thrive in the heat – fittonia is a good choice. Once you’ve washed and dried your

18 | bhomes.com

container, add the drainage with a layer of small stones at the bottom of the container. Add enough soil to cover the roots of the plants. Imagine how you want the finished terrarium to look and simply make a start. Remove plants from their pots and lightly break up the hard soil around the roots. Make a hole in the soil with your fingers and place the plant, keeping it away from the edges. Add more soil around the top and compact the soil down around the base of the plant before watering. “Most terrariums should be watered once a week. Small terrariums require about half a cup, with more in proportion to the size of the terrarium.”

Ask A designer Our interiors expert solves your queries and shares her hidden gems in the city

Sharon Jutla, award-winning interior designer I have a large openplan villa that I want to furnish with statement pieces without making my home look crowded. What advice can you give on what to shop for and where to shop? A home is about the people who live in it and it should tell the story of those people. Think about what defines you as a person through form, interesting shapes, sculptures and clean lines to bring structure and interest to your space. By using a few statement pieces such as bookshelves or an oversized coffee table to create a focal point, along with consoles, you can successfully create separate zones within the larger space of the villa. Shelves offer a variety of finishes from matte to polished metal and are a really nice way to frame beautiful pieces placed within them. Another statement piece to consider is wallpaper; the right wall covering can be used as a key feature or a backdrop, allowing other features to stand out. It also adds some texture and depth to a plain wall. Lastly, make sure you add your personal touch such as fresh flowers, art, candles and earthen pots to make your home comfortable. Check out West Elm (pictured), Marina Home, The Home Boutique and Pottery Barn for furniture pieces. Tribe, THE One and Indigo Living are good places to buy accessories at affordable prices.

brand draws inspiration from places and people from around the world, making it a reliable haven for inventive statement furniture pieces every season. NOOK, located in Jumeriah 1, is another place to source those perfect objects to complete a home’s display, offering stylish accessories, cool objects, lighting and amazing, eye-catching cushions. If you prefer to shop online, try Bowery Company, Ebarza and Urban Abode, which all offer home styling products and pieces that are affordable and fun. How can I make a small room feel bigger? Try using lighter shades such as whites, greys, greens and blues, which appear to recede and thereby make walls seem further back. Choose furniture that is the same colour as the walls. This will give the illusion of large pieces of furniture appearing smaller and less intrusive and they will almost appear to blend into the wall behind. Avoid too much contrast – neutral or monochromatic colour schemes usually work best.

mY LITTLE BLACK BOOK FOr rugs: Being obsessed with colour, I think rugs are one of the best things the world has to offer. Some of the places I source my rugs from include The Rug Company and Marina Home. I am also currently in love with the over-dyed colour rugs by Ebarza that really change how a space can look and feel.

WhAT’s YOur TOp dEsIgn TIp? To create a successful space, you should consider different ways the space will be used and create layers of lights to suit different scenarios. Ambient, task and accent light layers should be on dimming circuits that allow you to change the mood instantly at any time of the day.

West Elm

I have a small apartment that needs furnishing but I don’t want to spend much on it because I’ll be moving to somewhere with more space in a year’s time. Where do you recommend I shop? West Elm in The Dubai Mall is a great place to source some out-of-theordinary furniture pieces. It offers everything for the home, from floor and wall coverings to an array of accessories. Andrew Martin in DIFC is another place I recommend. The bhomes.com | 19

or antique ones. It automatically elevates the aesthetic value of any space.

Design DNA

I love a spectrum of neutrals as a base palette, particularly colours dictated by natural materials, and then I like to layer it with either a distinct pop of colour or touches of metallic.

I believe in form before function, but a bit of high concept design is too delicious not to have. Design ought to be fairly practical but have an equal measure of fantasy. It has to have a wink and creative imagination in it.

Go-to brands

I receive such varied briefs and there are so many great brands available. But for lights, I like the dramatic designs of Officina Luce and the clever, sculptural designs of CTO Lighting. For furniture, I love rare, vintage pieces that I find during my travels.

Wallpaper or paint?

Be brave in your choice of wall covering. Design is about tackling boundaries in space and style so let that be seen in your selection. The advantage that wallpaper has over paint is that it shows more character and conveys your design message a lot clearer.

Splurge on...

Design hero

There are a few people whom I really look up to: Dorothy Draper, one of the notable contemporary designers who placed the art of interior design front and centre; JeanLouis Deniot, who has a strong, chic, and very elegant point of view, and is inspirational considering he found his voice as an interior designer at a relatively early age; and Mary McDonald – her taste in design has spunk, personality, sass, and is very definitive. However, the true heroes are the longgone designers and artisans of centuryold, traditional styles of crafts and décor production – people who preserved the rich, unique language of design and whom I liken to haute couture in fashion.

Perfectly imperfect Designer Michael Aram on celebrating creativity, craft and the imperfections of nature Interview: Lucy Land Having studied art in the late 1980s in New York, Michael Aram took a journey to India where he discovered the rich metalworking tradition, which inspired his turn toward handcrafted design. The award-winning metalware, home accessories and fine jewellery designer has recently launched his Calla Lily collection. We caught up with him at Bloomingdale’s Home, The Dubai Mall... What was the pivotal moment that led to your move into handcrafted home accessories? I was working at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, designing books and posters – it was still a very handmade process back then – when I saw an exhibition on the work of Alexander Calder. What struck me about the exhibition, was that Calder worked with a variety of materials in a number of ways. For example, while he was creating his large sculptures, he was also making toys for his children, jewellery for his wife, ashtrays for his studio, irons for his fireplace, and toilet paper holders for his bathroom. There was a spirit of creativity and a lack of preciousness in terms of what he made. Soon afterwards, I journeyed to India where I saw artisans, who were making extraordinarily beautiful objects just as they had been made in India for hundreds of years and they were approaching their work in such a humble, beautiful way, which inspired me to work alongside them – it became a collaboration between artist and artisan. What inspired your Calla Lily collection? I always love celebrating the beauty of nature, and calla lilies represent a very direct connection to me. I remember growing up, seeing my mother’s wedding photo in which she was carrying those flowers. There is something so elegant, timeless and classic about them – they make me think of 1940s film stars, and beautiful Art Deco architecture. I have used shapes that are very clean and contemporary. I also played a lot with just the stems of the calla lily, which is what I call the abstracted, organic form so there are pieces that have just the stem without the flowers. Our design team used polished gold and brass in the stem pieces, which are then reflected in the stainless steel. These reflections amplify the movement. Then we’ve applied white enamel to the inside of

26 | bhomes.com

the calla lilies so they have a very pretty, jewellery-like quality. Why do you think it’s important to support handmade production? Handmade objects reflect the energy and passion that’s put into their making. When you pick up one of my pieces, you have a moment of pause when you think that someone made it. It’s a little unusual, which makes you consider the object and adds something special to the moment. I’ve always been one to celebrate craft yet craftsmen were underappreciated and almost ignored when I first started working. Their work wasn’t considered special. Now people have such an incredibly heightened awareness of craft although, simultaneously, the craftsmanship is disappearing. It’s becoming rarer and more precious to have handmade objects. How do your travels inspire you? Seeing how people live and how they entertain as well as how different cultures serve their food inspires me – to get a sense of culture and lifestyle is always impressive. How would you describe your personal style? Totally comfortable, unfussy and very consistent. Tell us about your design philosophy… I describe my design as perfectly imperfect; I celebrate the imperfections of nature. Philosophically, I like things that can be used and abused – everything should be as durable and multifunctional as it is beautiful. For example, I never want a coffee table that you can’t put your feet on. I live in a house in which we don’t smoke but I believe everything can be used as an ashtray. If I’m serving someone espresso in my great-grandmother’s Wedgwood and he uses it as an ashtray afterwards then I’m delighted that it’s being used in a way that’s comfortable for that person. My parents still have the silver candlesticks that my brother chewed when he was a baby and they look at them and they say, “Oh look, there are his teeth marks”. I think how lovely that is – I’d rather have my kids grow up and enjoy the memory of that beautiful thing. Michael Aram’s collections are available in-store at Bloomingdale’s Home, The Dubai Mall

ideas | Better Homes Magazine

“T

his is my favourite room in my home,” Maria Iqbal is referring to her cosy, light-filled meditation room, which adjoins her bedroom. With its tactile floor seating, bank of colourful cushions and shelves lined with books, framed photos, artwork and mementos picked up from her travels, it’s a warm yet whimsical room. “Everything in this room means something to me.” It’s also the place where Maria stays focused with her daily meditation ritual. “For me, meditation isn’t just sitting quietly. I love listening to motivational speakers so I’ll often listen to one when I’m sitting still or when I’m working.” Born in Afghanistan and raised in Dubai, Maria spent 10 years in the advertising industry, nine of which were in the US, before she moved to India where she met artists and entrepreneurs who inspired her to change direction. “Before then, I thought being an artist was a hobby and not something you could make a living from. I was scared of failing, which was partly a reflection of the economic situation in the US where everyone was scared of losing their jobs. You don’t know how many times I heard, ‘If you didn’t buy that daily latte for a year, do you know how much money you could save?’” Maria decided to return to Dubai to pursue her passion, choosing Jumeirah as her base. “It’s my favourite neighbourhood. It’s quiet but simultaneously very lively with its nearby cafés, and new retail locations Boxpark and City Walk – it’s just beautiful. It’s very central, and because I was raised here I have lots of memories and I am really attached to this neighbourhood.”

I arrived on the scene at the right time

Her father’s background in interiors gave Maria access to upholsters, carpenters and painters, plus a warehouse full of antique chairs from Italy and Spain, which she transformed. “I gave each chair a character, exhibited at a couple of shows, including INDEX, the chairs sold and people asked me to do different types of designs for chairs – that’s how I started out,” she says, simply. Her work grew as she received commissions for customised work. With brightly painted oil drums and quirky pop art sculptures in the front yard of Maria’s home, it’s clear that hers isn’t a typical Jumeirah villa. Her open-plan ground floor has an edgy gallery-meets-studio feel with her own bold pieces sitting easily alongside classic Italian furniture. A tailor works on Maria’s clothing designs in the backroom. “I’m doing a lot of fashion accessories now,” she reveals. “It’s a bigger decision to purchase home accessories compared to fashion. I just want to make people happy so the surface is incidental – the art is the art.” Maria is modest about her work. “I arrived on the scene at the right time,” she says. “Twenty years ago people liked the classic Italian style, especially in Dubai, but now there’s a large population of Indians here, who love bright things.” When Maria returned to Dubai six years ago, she decided she wanted to have her own home that she would make beautiful. It seems she’s found her place. “I love being home. It’s where I am myself."

My other tip is… When planning lighting, always pay attention to what the light will reflect off – it makes a huge difference. i also recommend that you... Make your own décor. bhomes.com | 37

Simply magnificent Rich fabrics combined with organic materials ensure this South African holiday retreat strikes the perfect balance between luxury and comfort Words: Lucy Land

B

oasting a prime location with stunning views of the Atlantic Seaboard and a backdrop of the magnificent Twelve Apostles mountain range in Camps Bay, this impressive property in South Africa makes a dream holiday home. When its international owners set about transforming it into a more modern and sophisticated home with an ethnic edge, they turned to interior design studio ARRCC to turn their vision into a reality. “The property is used for intimate family holidays so that formed the backbone of the design,” says Jon Case, ARRCC director. Tasked with creating a completely new aesthetic, Jon transformed the existing structure into a large open space accommodating an inflow of natural light through the use of an array of reflective surfaces. The entrance glass lobby was clad in reflective glass while large external aluminium screens, which layer the exterior of the house, also ensured that the views of the Twelve Apostles were magnified. “It was important to ensure that the design of the house really accentuated the views,” Jon explains. The entire property was gutted, which included reworking the whole basement to incorporate new staff facilities, and extending the swimming pool.

“The existing architecture had a distinct look that we wanted to refresh, while retaining the building’s character.” The entrance level now comprises a kitchen, dining and lounge area as well as a designated study and guest washroom. Dominating the living room is a slatted screen, boldly shaped with an organic design. The Volakas marble floors offer a sophisticated design detail and sets the colour palette of the space, which is accented by French oak veneers with touches of bronze and metallic, adding another layer to the interior design. “My favourite room is definitely the lounge area,” Jon enthuses. “The screen, which sits adjacent to the staircase, adds great movement to the interior and the focal points throughout the room are pure and balanced.” The entrance makes way for the living area, which features a modern design aesthetic, incorporating OKHA furniture – a South African brand of bespoke design – using medium tones that add richness and character to the space. Artwork by local greats Lionel Smit and Nelson Makamo add a contemporary African feel to the spaces while also ensuring that the personality of the owner is strongly reflected. The living area opens up to the pool entertainment terrace with a covered lounge area, outside shower and infinity pool with stunning views of the ocean while the kitchen, adjacent to the lounge and living space, accentuates the light, organic palette of the villa through its monochromatic and minimalistic design.

This leads onto an outdoor space, set with a BBQ to accommodate outdoor dining. Also on the entrance level off the lobby, a walkway leads to a self-contained, private guest suite, which features a contrasting colour palette to the main house, with dark wood furniture and a textured rug in olive green and mustard, which complements the artwork by Emalie Bingham above the bed. The lower level accommodates a kids’ playroom dressed with graphic wallpaper and a light colour scheme to create a fun space. It also includes double doors, which open to a vertical garden with a swing, creating an indoor-outdoor feel. On the upper level, a glass bridge links two wings featuring the master bedroom and the two children’s bedrooms. The master bedroom offers an en-suite bathroom and designated dressing room, which opens up to a private exterior terrace with uninterrupted views from Lion’s Head mountain to Llandudno beach. A Peruvian alpaca rug adds softness to the space while the wall art above the bed brings colour to the room. With custom-designed beds and graphic wallpaper, the children’s bedrooms are mirrored versions of each other with differing features to reflect a lively space with strong African references. Understandably, Jon is pleased with the completely renovated property, “The house has a wonderful flow, the entertainment spaces are seamless and the materials have authentic integrity. It also has amazing natural light, not to mention an incredible view.”

Motor City Bobby Bakshani, Residential Sales Consultant, on living in a lively yet easygoing community

It may be a fully developed community based on a motorsport theme, but Motor City is also a laid-back, green and spacious residential neighbourhood comprising of a European-styled community of freehold residential properties, business, sports, retail and leisure facilities. Built by UAE-based property development company Union Properties, it is well-known for Dubai Autodrome, a 5.39 km Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile-certified track; Formula One theme park F1-X Dubai; two residential communities, Uptown Motor City and Green Community Motor City; and Business Park Motor City, which has high-rise towers for offices and retail space, including car showrooms and carrelated shops. Uptown Motor City is a low-rise residential apartment development featuring prime properties. It has an English feel with roads made from interlocked bricks and includes parks, schools and gyms. Green Community Motor City has family villas, townhouses and spacious terraced apartments overlooking the lakes and lush gardens.

With its spacious layouts and its varied mix of spacious residential and business developments, Motor City offers the ability to work and live in the same neighbourhood. It is also ideally located for commuters, with exits leading straight onto the major road links such as Hessa Street, Al Khail and the E311 Sheikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Road. Retail facilities within the community include Spinneys and Choithram supermarkets, dentists, pharmacies, banks, and food retail outlets such as Subway and Wendy’s. Long-established Jebel Ali Village Nursery and Emirates British Nursery are both located in the area along with GEMS Metropole School. Other than the spacious apartments, which generally come with large storage rooms and parking, there are five different types of residential properties within Motor City: three-bedroom townhouses located in Green Community Motor City; four-bedroom Windsor Crescent villas located in Uptown Motor City; four-bedroom simplex bungalows; five-bedroom family villas; and sixbedroom luxury villas.

While schools in Dubai normally get inspected after three years, Sunmarke, confident in its leadership team and teachers, elected to be inspected in the first year and has achieved in one year what schools typically accomplish in three. Despite being a new school, we have achieved an overall ‘good’ rating with several ‘outstanding’ features. Sunmarke is well on its way to becoming an exceptional school, as validated by the Dubai School Inspection Board

Choose Asya’s Nursery, say co-lead teachers Bonita Smith and Joanna Berbie What sets your nursery apart from others in the city?

Established in 2011, Asya’s Nursery is a British nursery located on Palm Jumeirah, where most of our families live. This magical wonderland consists of seven classrooms, each with its own unique features, custom-designed fittings and shabby chic interior. We have flexible timings to help busy working families while our fees are inclusive of meals. Our food supplier, Right Bite, recently won SME of the Year award, and is the first company allowed by the municipality to have a Healthy Food seal. Supervised by their nutritionist and our nurse, Right Bite caters to all of the children’s dietary requirements, including food allergies, vegetarians and wheat-free diets.

Tell us about your team…

Our experienced, qualified staff ensure a common understanding of our principles with shared professional development workshops to strengthen the implementation of best practice. Our school community values respect, responsibility and teamwork while our nursery places a high priority on continuous professional development, with all staff having at least 18 hours of training per year. Courses include paediatric first aid, fire safety and child development.

Is there anything else parents should know about?

Our philosophy is that children should be treated with warmth and respect and encouraged to reach their full potential. We place a high priority on reaching the highest standards; and maintain them by keeping up to date with the latest teaching styles and having a good relationship with feeding schools as to what the necessary entry requirements are. Consequently, our children have priority placement in a number of schools. We also offer holiday camps throughout the year with fun learning themes and activities for the children to participate in.
