amta Nihalani has always had a strong affinity towards interior design and skincare. Over the last two years, her life and career have directed her into fulfilling both desires successfully. “I recently got married and had the opportunity to achieve my lifelong passion of interior designing,” says Mamta, who was born and bred in Dubai, but is of Indian origin. As the mother of one-year old Zaiden and founder of all-natural brand Apothecary by Mamta Nihalani sits down to speak, she recalls days where her cousins gathered to apply age-old recipes of facemasks and scrubs their grandmother’s swore by. Fast forward to present day, Mamta now finds herself creating potions for clients who have made it a part of their daily skincare regime. “My friends and family swear by this stuff. A friend asked me to do 200 giveaways, so within two weeks I conceptualised the branding, sourced the bottles and did everything to launch it,” she tells us of how the brand came about. Every product is made with love and care within the home. To be honest, we wouldn’t want to work from elsewhere either. The Golden Mile penthouse gleams with natural light lending a fresh, inviting ambience. “The main

thing was to keep it classy, cosy and lived in, even though most of the items are new,” she tells us. “The home was very bright and the minute we walked in we felt at peace. We saw plenty of properties before choosing this one. Palm was actually my last option and the Downtown was my first, however I’ve always loved the idea of a penthouse and this one was massive and just great in comparison to the others.” Luckily for Mamta and her family, the previous owners – who never lived at the apartment – renovated the kitchen, tiling all over the home and a few other features to make it the open expansive space it is. The kitchen is separated from the lower floor, another feature Mamta loves. Taupe grey paint from Jotun coats the living room walls, although it’s the art collection that livens up the setting. “My mother-in-law is very much
into art and gifted us the MF Husain paintings which she kept aside for each of her sons. She also picked up the Mashkoor painting hung on the living room wall, which adds a pop of colour.” The dining and bedroom walls are covered with wallpaper sourced from a supplier in Satwa and boast floral prints. As for the furniture pieces, Mamta had the side tables, coffee table and dining set custom-made at House of Zunn. The plush white-couches with tufted back were designed by Mamta and created by a carpenter in India. The bedroom is zen with a light green wallpaper and white bed frame with side tables from The One. Mamta chose to keep the palette neutral so that they feel calm and at ease when there. “The master bedroom is very relaxed. Prior to getting married, I had a fuchsia coloured room and was never at peace, so I needed that tranquil feeling.

The ensuite bathroom has a small window near the tub, so you can soak in a hot bath, lay back and take in the stunning view of the sea in the distance. The baby’s bedroom complements the master room with a natural, earthy tone that needs no renovation as the child grows. The TV room serves its purpose, with large couches all around for her son and her to relax and play together. One of her favourite stores for accessories and bits and bobs is Marina Home. In fact, the sidetable lamps in the living room were picked months prior to their move. The couple travel a lot for work, naturally bringing back mementos from each place. The vibrant cushion on the large Bloomingdale’s chair hails from Jaipur – the couple’s marriage destination purely because of their love for the colonial era – while the silver bowls were purchased on a

trip to Pakistan. Since Mamta studied Feng Shui, her staircase wall is adorned with silver koi fish – a symbol of wealth and success. Anyone will notice that Mamta definitely has an eye for design and she partially credits this to her hotelier background at some of Dubai’s finest hotels. Brands like Bloomingdale’s Home-Dubai are mixed in with pieces from Marina Home and The One, injecting her personality while adding character to the space. The community surroundings are gorgeous and a perfect spot for those with little ones and pets. The nearby parks see residents from Jumeirah visiting during the cooler months and Mamta finds herself heading to the playground with her baby whenever the weather permits. Since Golden Mile is home to the Galleria shopping mall which houses cafés, restaurants, supermarkets and a gym, she often finds herself leaving the island only if she really has to.

How-to: CHOOSE THE RIGHT FLOORING
REFLECT YOUR OWN TASTE
Sleek and modern, or frivolous and romantic? It’s time to discover the style that suits you best. The first step to choosing a floor is deciding what look and feel you want for each room throughout your home. Remember your floor is a key design element so you’ll want to spend some time selecting the right materials, colours, patterns, textures and even shapes for each room. Material options include wood, laminate, vinyl, carpet, cork, bamboo, ceramic and linoleum, to name a few.
ANALYSE THE AREA
The colour of your floor has a major impact on the feeling of space you get in a room. Warm or dark tones like wenge, walnut or smoked oak, tend to make large rooms seem small and cosier. Conversely, if you are cramped for space already, consider lighter, natural floor colours like beige, light oak or maple to really brighten up a room. The lighting will get altered according to the flooring too. Judging a sample colour at night, by artificial light, will give you a varied impression than during mid-afternoon in the sunlight. Of course, light colors give a dark room a fresh, brighter feel.
Those with sunny spaces and floorto-ceiling windows can opt for dark or even black floor colour to add a slightly dramatic edge.
well with heavy, colonial fixtures, while brown tints are the best match for a country-style theme.
THE T YPE
It’s possible to find the floor you always wanted with a limited budget. Some of the options include laminate or vinyl flooring and these are firm, scratchresistant, easy to maintain and available in virtually every look, design and colour: the perfect foundation for your home.
Now that you know what your design options are, you need to figure out what flooring works best for certain locations. For example, a floor for a full bathroom with a shower and/or tub needs to withstand pooling water and humidity fluctuations. Hardwood, which can buckle, gap or warp when subjected to standing water and/or moisture, is not the best choice for a full bathroom. Better options include ceramic tile and vinyl sheet, which are practically impervious to water. Laminate linoleum and vinyl tile are good options; however, special waterproofing precautions should be taken around perimeters and seams.
KEEP IN MIND
Don’t choose your floor colour based on an empty room. Make sure it also matches the broader style and feel you want to give your interiors. Natural colours create a neutral canvas, allowing your furniture to take centre stage. Red tones bring a sense of luxury and go
30 JULY 2016 | www.bhomes.com
STICK TO A BUDGET
MAINTAIN IT
Your flooring doesn’t need any special maintenance. To clean your floor, simply use a damp floor cloth or a micro fibre one. For flooring with beveled edges or V-grooves, we recommend you only clean them dry. If you use water to clean, dirt may collect in the grooves and prove difficult to remove. Always vacuumclean the floor first, or sweep with a microfibre cloth. If necessary, you can subsequently use a damp cloth to keep the floor spick and span. tips supplied by walls and Floors (wallsandfloors.com or contact +971 4 8855 500).

1. REVAMP THE KITCHEN
A large art piece creates impact and drama on a kitchen wall, plus it adds a pop of colour to your room so pick wisely. If your cabinets have glass doors, paint the insides with an emerald green, dark blue, or a tone that suits your surroundings.

Transform the look of your wardrobe, cabinets and plain white entrance doors with a coat of paint. Opt for pastel shades of green, blue, lavender or a distressed beige to make the space appear larger. Change knobs to copper or gold tone to give it a sophisticated touch.
Spend hours on your terrace and keep mosquitoes at bay with plants such as basil, rosemary (placed on a windowsill, the garden or porch), geraniums, catnip, lemon balm and/ or lavender.
3 . B AT H R O O M B E AU T Y
To give your washroom an elegant look and feel, add coat hooks to the back of the door to hang towels. Keep the counter clean and organised by screwing a magazine holder at the back of the cabinet to stash away the blow dryer and hot iron.

taly is home to some of the world’s most stunning achitecture. Whichever city you choose to visit, each one has its charm, with interiors and design that leave you in a daze. This 500-year-old home in the Puglia region of coastal Southern Italy was chosen for its prestigious location near tourist attractions such as Basilica di Santa Croce which boasts Baroque architecture. The area comes alive at night too, with a festive, friendly vibe and bustle from the cafés and street stands all over. When Mariana Piccolo, CEO & Founder of Mypickone Studio Design (based in Dubai Design District) first saw the apartment, it had fallen into a state of disrepair. “Its walls and mineral decorative flooring were severely damaged in several areas. Like most traditional houses in Lecce, this also comprised of numerous small rooms, giving the interiors a very dingy appearance,” says Mariana. The owner however knew that he stumbled upon a gem that, with a bit of sensible renovation, could be converted into a cosy private residence. The twostoried house with terrace is around 400 square metres and was transformed to a modern home, retaining and restoring as much of its traditional elements as possible. He was also keen to incorporate vintage pieces of furniture, lighting and accessories, with accents of contemporary décor and art. The living room of this home connects to the dining and piano space. Traditional terrazzo flooring runs

seamlessly across the rooms, bonding them visually. Overall, the décor is minimal and includes vintage armchairs, hand knitted pouf Ottomans, a Moros carpet, vintage floor lamp, an inset bookshelf which holds the owner’s favourite reads and collectibles and a traditional fireplace that lends a nostalgic warmth to the space. repairs. The owner’s father personally repaired and painted all the doors. “He also wanted to install a floor heating system that would be discreet so we had to completely redo it. We opted for a traditional terrazzo flooring to keep the look as authentic as possible,” she says. Italian marble, mosaics and classic fittings were sourced from the local market, while the staircase was redone by skilled masons in Pietra Leccese, with a kind of limestone found only in the Salento region in the Southeast of Italy. of the region as possible, which is now visible in everything from the choice of finish, material and décor, down to the miniature plants in the terrace: fig, cactus and prickly pear. “We wanted to transform the interiors into a space that was light, airy and inviting. To achieve this, we had to do away with the small rooms and knock down practically all of the curtain walls to create connected living spaces. We also punctured the weight bearing walls with archways,” Mariana says. The palette was kept as neutral as possible, with pops of colour from the eclectic mix of vintage and contemporary furniture, furnishings and
art pieces. The furniture, chandeliers and sconces were sourced from local flea markets. Candelabras that came from the church – a generous donation – while contemporary pieces were picked up from the Italian store Novembre Arredamenti. This includes for instance the signature Him and Her chair designed by Fabio Novembre for Casamania, which proudly sits in the dining area. The tableware, cloth and home linen are all Marimekko, a Finnish brand known for its bold patterns and organic designs. but striking art pieces were picked up from the studio of New Zealand artist Vittoria Kolless, who is now also based in Italy. Back in the days, even right up to the 70s, the women of Southern Italy gave birth at home. The owner himself was born at home; his mother delivered him on a dining table. He attaches a lot of sentimental value to this piece and so asked his grandmother to give it to him so he could refurbish it for this residence. The dining table now sits in the private dining room on the rooftop. In a region with so much history and culture, reflecting it in your home is naturally a must.

a bit about yourselF ?
i was born and raised in Australia but of Egyptian descent.
Where do you live and Why did you choose this neighbourhood?
i live in Jumeirah islands as it has always been an escape from the rest of Dubai for me - there’s no construction, noise, and disturbances. Each and every house is unique and that’s something i absolutely love. the main thing that gets me every single time has got to be the greenery and nature, the palm trees and that fresh scent when you leave your house in the morning, butterflies in the air and squirrels running around - it honestly reminds me of being back in the suburbs of Australia, a home away from home. it’s also a definite plus since it’s close to places i often visit, like JBR, MOE, and the Marina.
local coFFee shop
i generally visit Shakespeare & co at the town center, which is close to home. it’s a fantastic place to wind down when you don’t feel like being out and about.
all-time Favourite takeout
it has got to be Fuschia; they have one of my favourite thai foods. Although i have to say i’ve recently been ordering in a lot of PiNZA pizza, their concept of 80% water and 20% dough is so different, and once i tried it i was hooked - who knew
you could have pizza and be healthy.
Favourite brunch spot
i don’t actually have any favourites, because i rarely ever get the time to go for brunch. if i had to pick, i’d say Novikov has become a recent favourite brunching hotspot. i really do enjoy the diversity in their foods and the fact that you don’t have to get up to serve as everything comes right to your table.
retail therapy

i think finding good authentic Australian food has always been tough to do in Dubai; it’s not generally a cuisine that most people crave. Although i’d have to say that tom&Serg hits it very close to home for me.
i know (i highly recommend the Nutella).

hidden gems
i know that a lot of people have this negative idea of Dragon Mart but sometimes i go there with just the intention to roam around and come out with bags of different things. they have such fun, unique and interesting pieces that you would never find elsewhere - it honestly feels like you’ve left mainstream Dubai and have flown away to china. i never leave without going to this quaint little kiosk known as Fatah’s crepes, hands down the best crepe place

When Friends visit
i never let visitors leave without making a trip to At.mosphere at Burj Khalifa, just to sit in good company in the lounge area and look over the skyline of Dubai. i’d follow with a desert safari, just to experience a little bit of culture and tradition. Finally, no experience here is complete without shisha; my favourite is the Sunken Garden at the Ritz carlton, DiFc as it is secluded.

The Palm Jumeirah is one of the main attractions for tourists all over the world, but most of all it is home for many UAE residents. The community offers both high-end properties such as Signature Villas on the fronds and affordable studio apartments in Palm Views boasting stunning sea views. The crescent features both residential
developments and hotels, with the island being home to renowned luxury hospitality brands including Waldorf Astoria, Rixos The Palm, Anantara Residences and everyone’s favourite spot for leisure and family fun activities, Atlantis The Palm. Properties are currently being developed, offering a great selection for those who want to lease or buy. Marina Residences is apt for premium quality interiors and finishing, while cosy studios can be found at The Palm Views. Both are situated on the trunk together with Golden Mile, Shoreline Apartments, Oceana and Tiara Residences. Independent villas are located on the fronds, as well as land where you can customize your own dream home. Studios are approximately 500 square feet, while four or five-bedroom penthouses can be easily over 10,000 square feet. Villas are an average of 5,000 square feet built up area. You can rent a onebedroom apartment from Dhs110,000 at Shoreline Apartments and Dhs170,000

at Tiara or Oceana Residences. The most affordable three-bedroom at Shoreline Apartments is around Dhs165,000. Here you can also find four-and fivebedroom duplexes from Dhs275,000 to Dhs320,000. Four-bedroom townhouses at Palma Residences and the Canal Coves start from Dhs320,000 to Dhs380,000. Independent villas can easily be rented for Dhs300,000. There’s no public transportation on The Palm, however most taxis are well versed with the area. A car is an absolute must for residents living here, especially for those who get in and out of the area much. However, those who want to lay in on weekends or stay back in the area, can head to the nearby bars, fine dining restaurants, beach clubs, shops, and cafés located along Shoreline and the Galleria at Golden Mile. The world’s 21st-largest mall is under construction and this will house a five-star hotel, five floors of retail outlets, and a 180-metre high viewing deck with stunning panoramic sea views.

What sets your educational institution apar t from others in the city ? For over 40 years Jebel Ali Nurseries, through its six branches in key expatriate residential communities, has been providing the best possible start to school life for children, many of whom have grown up through the nursery and have embarked on highly successful and fulfilling lives. The nursery allows children from three months to four years old.
Why should a parent enroll their child at your establishment ?
Parents place immense trust in us to help their children settle at school, and to enjoy their early learning experiences. We are very keen to make sure that all our children have the best possible start to Early year education in our care. Our nurseries are a happy, friendly place for little ones. We are completely focused on nurturing every little boy and girl so that they are able to get the most of every day at Jebel Ali Nursery. There is real warmth here, and tremendous sense of fun and energy. Walk into our lovely purpose built facilities, and you will immediately be heartened by the sounds of confident children busily learning and playing together. You will see idyllic surroundings too. Our aim is to build strong relationships with children’s families and make them an integral part

of nursery life through our open door policy.
What else does the nurser y focus heavily on?
We pride ourselves in tailoring our services to individual needs. With our flexible days and various timings, we can supply the routine you need for your little one and busy lifestyle. We remain open throughout the year except local public holidays and over weekends.
Does the nurser y offer anything else in par ticular ?
We offer a high standard of Early Years British Education and help build selfesteem, confidence and strong social skills in each child in our care, with an emphasis on manners and sense of global community.

Ask the experts
Household or c o m m u n i t y d i l e m m a? Our skilled panel is here to help
Q. How can a parent prep their child for nursery? A. It’s important to give your child permission to be able to experience a lifestyle outside of their home. Let them know that they can eat the nursery food and play with their new friends. When you are dropping your children off, keep your goodbye short and sweet, assuring them they are in a loving and friendly environment. Confirm that you will pick them up after lunch or after their nap. Be calm as possible and happy for your child’s new Nursery experience. Bernadette King-Turner Q. My child has a gluten intolerance and not many restaurants/cafés offer a kid’s menu that is healthy and gluten-free. Could you please name a few spots that mention allergies and are nut-and gluten-free dishes? A. One of the best things about living in a city like Dubai is the huge range of family friendly eating out options available. However, when one of you suffers from food intolerances or allergies, eating out can quickly become a pain rather than a pleasure. A family favourites is Carluccio’s where you can get a gluten-free menu including gluten free pasta – a sure hit with most kids. Another dining institution, The Lime Tree Café, has recently opened its gluten-free bakery which handmakes a selection of breads, cookies, and cakes, ready for collection every Sunday. For home delivery try a gluten-free pizza base from Freedom Pizza .In many other places, with a bit of clever menu navigation focusing on rice, potato, salad or protein based dishes, little ones with gluten intolerances needn’t miss out on the fun family dining experiences Dubai has to offer. Just be sure to make your servers aware of any allergies at the start and don’t be afraid to ask questions or ask to speak to the chef where you are uncertain on anything.

A ARDEE POWER BLENDER THOR When this brand mentions the word power, it’s no joke. This heavy-duty blender is ideal for those in a hurry, or in need of a quick smoothie post gym, before heading out the door.
What we like?
First of all, the gadget has step-by-step instructions that show you how to set the programs for different ingredients. Since the product is already assembled, just place it on a kitchen counter and you’re good to go. Those who love a nutritious vegetable and fruit concoction will enjoy using it, as it’s super easy to operate. It comes with a long mixing stick, however, we didn’t need it as the carrot, orange and ice blended within seconds, taking less than a minute to make the fresh juice. The

best part is the gadget has a self-cleaning option so you can fill the jug with soap and water and mix for a few seconds before rinsing. The gadget can also be used to make soup, as it has an auto-heating program. After it blends the ingredients, it heats to 100C and cooks the soup in just eight minutes.
What we didn’t like?
Those with space constraints may find tucking this gadget away a hassle. To be honest though, it’s stylish appearance makes it a counter keeper throughout the seasons.
To buy: Dhs999 at Sharaf DG, citrusstv.com and select leading supermarkets such as Union Co-operative and Hyper Panda.
The latest food processor from the brand offers five pre-programmed one-touch auto menus ideal for those who need an all-in-one gadget. It may be bulky, however you can literally use this to fulfil all cooking requirements.
What we like?
Mince, chop, make paste, grind nuts and seeds, utilise the spinner to dry salad leaves and process semifrozen fruit and vegetables for making dessert or gelato. These are just some of what you can do with this gadget. 13 accessories can be used for 33 multiple uses including kneading and juicing amongst many others. Tiresome and time-consuming chores are now minimised as the easy-to-use gadget does it

all effectively. We made tomato passata and were amazed at how similar the flavour and consistency was to a readymade storebought mixture. You can find a recipe book enclosed for inspiration too.
What we didn’t like?
The cleaning process after can be slightly off-putting. However, you can minimise this by washing accessories as you use it.
To buy: Dhs1,099 at Al Futtaim Panatech Showroom in Deira.
Head to your nearest Home Centre store for the season's latest in furniture and home accessories. When the most vibrant colours and on trend designs are handpicked by Nancy Ajram, it's surely enough to give your home a new look.
