f proof were ever needed that the worlds of interiors and fashion are colliding then nip over to celebrity stylist Kelly Lundberg’s pad in Anantara Residences, Palm Jumeirah (page 32). She’s given her fully furnished hotel apartment a personal touch with Vera Wang china, cushions and artworks by fashion illustrators S. Brooker and Megan Hess, and transformed her store cupboard into a shoe closet crammed with the likes of Charlotte Olympia, Sophia Webster and Sam Edelman. As Kelly says, there’s nothing like a pop of colour to lift a space and we’ve got plenty of inspiration, from the dreamiest shades of blue (page 23) to bold pink and gold designs (page 15), and playful, printed cushions (page 64). In Al Barsha, we explore a family holiday home (page 34), which cleverly combines a streamlined design with Arabesque touches. We also head over to Wiltshire, England, to see how interior designer Claire Rendall has customised old and new furnishings to create an easy yet elegant look (page 40). If you’re looking for a new apartment, villa or townhouse to rent or buy, be sure to check out our guide to Jumeirah Village Circle (page 51), an increasingly popular neighbourhood.

Trend forecaster Scarlet Opus was recently in Dubai to reveal the hot trends of 2018. The company predicts that the biggest trend will be sustainability, which sees materials including discarded fish skin, peanut shells and rice husks more widely used in design. We sniffed the salmon skin leather in the Beau Sapphire Arctic cushion by Chase Erwin (pictured right) and can assure you there wasn’t the slightest fishy whiff.

It is always important to have a clear message with your art and design – it helps to hone your creativity and overall design direction.

Go-to brands

If I were to choose my top three, they would be West Elm, Natuzzi and IDdesign. They all have a unique personality, but when combined together in the right way, they come together in great harmony.

Top wall covering tip

Be brave in your choice of wall covering. Design is about tackling boundaries in space and style so let that be seen in your selection. The advantage that wallpaper has over paint is that it shows more character and conveys your design message a lot clearer.

Splurge on

I recently got introduced to the world of parquet when I was moving house. You’ll be surprised by how much of a difference beautiful parquet adds to your space.

Contrary to most misconceptions, parquet will make a space feel warm, but it does not actually make it warmer.

Setting a table for eiD al-fitr Make your festivities feel special with some simple ideas

The month of Ramadan followed by Eid al-Fitr is a special time in the Islamic calendar. The daily fasting, which breaks at sunset with the evening prayer followed by an Iftar dinner plays an important role while Eid al-Fitr is greeted with much pomp and sumptous meals so if you’re joining in the celebrations, the table setting needs to wow. Stick to a harmonious colour and theme, and dress up your table with a beautiful linen tablecloth and matching napkins or use khayamiya, an appliqué fabric traditionally used to decorate tents.

Paris-Memphis candle holder collection, from Dhs760 each, by Thomas Daniel for Maison DaDa

Add a fanoos (a Ramadan lantern, which symbolises the end of the fast), candles for ambience, and your best porcelain dinner set and glassware. Bear in mind that if your tablecloth, napkins and table decorations are bold and colourful, you may want to keep your dinner set and glassware simple, while white servingware matches every theme. Finally, ensure your table isn’t overcrowded by bringing the dishes to the table as they are ready to be served and you’ll have a table worthy of celebrating Eid al-Fitr with your dearest.

Ask A designer Our interiors expert answers your queries and shares her hidden gems in the city

Isabel Pintado, managing director of the Dubai design studio for Wilson Associates Having recently moved from an apartment into a villa, I miss the cosiness of my previous home. The spacious villa has openplan areas, white floor tiling throughout and some of the rooms have French windows leading onto terraces. What tips can you give for flooring, lighting and dressing the windows? I would recommend starting by pulling together some images of a design direction that you like, and to keep referring back to these images when selecting the different elements for your new home. I find the following usually works well for bringing cosiness into large open spaces: oversized pots with large plants; use of mirrors to make the items on display appear to fill the space; light shelving or screens [Nada Debs, pictured right] to vary the ambience; selecting a colour palette that matches the chosen design direction and sticking to it throughout all the elements; overscaled artwork combined with precious personal portraits; freestanding lamps; and large rugs to bring the scale of the area down. Make sure you select a pattern that sums up the design direction you have chosen and pick one of the base colours for your curtain fabric.

personal priorities. Rich rug patterns with complementary sofas will form the basis of the hotel look together with myriad accessories. Place artwork in unexpected places such as the kitchen or a powder room.

mY LITTLE BLACK BOOK

I need some help dressing my large entrance foyer with a big round table, a rug and a chandelier. How should I choose a theme to work with? I would recommend a light colour scheme with touches of metalwork. The top of the table could be either timber or marble, depending on your personal style, and the legs in any type of metal such as bronze, copper or stainless steel. I always find that the larger the table (within the limitations of the space) the better, because a big statement like that will allow the space to succeed. The rug and the chandelier or pendant lamp will follow the direction set by the table. I would suggest a graphically strong rug and selecting the pendant lamp to match the design direction of the rest of the house. Oversized lampshades with a metallic internal lining are always a superb design statement.

I always find beautiful pieces at Caspaiou (caspaiou.com) and the galleries at Alserkal Avenue when the budget permits. When the budget is more limited, Marina Home (marinahomeinteriors.com) is always a good source.

With regards to colour schemes, there are two safe directions you could take: black and white or cream or taupe tone-on-tone. Your furniture layout should reflect who you are and how you will use the space. If entertaining is your thing, allocate a substantial amount of space to a sitting area and dining room. A modern mIX Entrepreneur Najla AlBakoush’s vision of a streamlined space with Arabesque touches is brought to life by interior design practice Design Haus Medy Words: Lucy Land

ideas | Better Homes Magazine

“I

feel like I’m home every time I walk into our holiday villa, no matter how long we have been away,” says entrepreneur Najla AlBakoush, referring to her property in Al Barsha, which she shares with her husband Walid and their three grown-up children when they are visiting the city. The couple chose Al Barsha for its privacy, its culture-filled neighbourhood and central location, and they called upon interior design practice Design Haus Medy to help make their house a home. The brief was to create a cosy, comfortable space with a modern Arabesque touch while the architecture and interior were designed to maximise the light in the 7,500 sq ft, four-bedroom bungalow. The couple wanted an open space and to incorporate high-quality furniture as well as timeless, tactile fabrics like soft velvet, warm wood flooring, and a light earthy and pastel colour scheme. “As a starting point, we presented two concepts – modern Arabesque and contemporary transitional – to our client,” says Medy Nahravani, Design Haus Medy’s founder and CEO, who previously worked with Najla on her main family home in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. She opted to blend the two, choosing her favourite parts of both concepts. “It was new for us to combine two different design styles so seamlessly together,” Medy enthuses. The process was aided by Najla, who had a strong idea of what she liked from the start. “Najla wanted to have a bright, fresh and relaxing environment,” says Medy. “As the living area is dominated by large floor-to-ceiling windows we kept the palette bright and fresh while adding touches of pastel.” Design Haus Medy’s ethos is to ensure a close relationship with its clients. Najla’s passion for the project meant that many important decisions on the villa’s design direction were taken together with the design team. “It means that Najla will always find her personal touch on much of her home’s interiors,” explains Medy. However, challenges were presented with Design Haus Medy being based in Dubai while Najla lived in Saudi Arabia. “To liaise with more than 45 suppliers and contractors and to bring out the best in them in the shortest possible time frame to achieve such high-end finishes requires very good communication and project management skills,” Medy admits. “We stepped up to the challenge, though, and we won.” The open-plan design starts with the monochrome kitchen, which connects to the open dining area, formal sitting room

and informal office set-up. The open living area is separated from the private living quarters by a long corridor, which connects all the bedrooms: two identical boys’ bedrooms and one girl’s bedroom. “We kept the bedrooms very simple, combining neutral grey and navy blue for the boys’ bedrooms and beiges and earth colours and champagne gold for the girl’s bedroom, highlighted by chandeliers, wallpaper and rugs,” says Medy. The master bedroom looks out onto the swimming pool. “The pool edge and bedroom window are almost touching each other,” Medy says, highlighting the sense of flow from indoors to outdoors. A sophisticated colour scheme combines grey as a base with pastel green, mother of pearl and silver accents. The bedroom furniture was completely covered in soft fabrics while a free-standing bathtub offers a view over the garden. The seamless transition from inside to outside is also emphasised in the main living room where the floor-to-ceiling windows can be opened using a foldable system. Once the windows are completely folded away, the home office is opened up on two sides, giving it a pontoon feel. The romantically styled gazebo, which overlooks the pool, is attached to the main building. Featuring Arabic woodwork and lanterns, the gazebo also includes

a sophisticated hidden air conditioning system so the family can make the most of the space during the summer. The dining room is inspired by a variety of Middle Eastern elements, including custom-made dining table and chairs, hand-tufted silk and wool carpets made in India, featuring Islamic-style patterns. Lighting also played an important role in creating a warm atmosphere while highlighting the all-important decorative items. This is especially evident in the lighting above the dining table, which casts fantastic shadows on the ceiling. Many of the handmade light fittings were imported from North Africa. Artworks play an important role in adding a personal touch. “We included a mixture of artworks, such as calligraphy artwork commissioned by an artist based in Tehran, with pieces from my sister and some black and white photographs from London where we spend a lot of time,” Najla says. Together with the design team, Najla has successfully created a simple yet elegant space that creatively connects the architecture with the outdoors, literally and culturally. “There’s a fantastic energy that you feel inside the house,” Medy says. No wonder Najla feels so at home in it. bhomes.com | 39

W

hen interior designer Claire Rendall first viewed her house, located just outside Bath in the English county of Wiltshire, she was reminded of the Hamptons-style beach house featured in Something’s Gotta Give, arguably the most beloved movie home of all time. “The [Wiltshire] house had a special resonance with me,” she says. “And guess what DVD was top of the pile in the TV room!” She was drawn to the home’s setting on a hillside, offering fabulous countryside views; and its large, airy rooms; stone mullion windows; and flagstone floors. “The house had a lovely quality feel about it. The garden had some pretty feature trees but otherwise the house offered a blank canvas.” The house in Something’s Gotta Give has a gorgeous collected look, as though its interiors have evolved over the years – Claire has pulled off the same style in her own home. However, she had some work to do. The original palette featured heavy, dull pinks, blues and greens on the walls; patterned curtains; champagne and avocado bathroom suites; and the window frames were an oppressive dark grey metal. “The first thing I did was kill the colours,” she explains. She used Paint Library’s range of Slate on the walls to lift the rooms, while the window frames were changed to Farrow & Ball’s Clunch. “It was amazing how the views suddenly came into the room rather than being shut out with the grey.” To compliment the fresh tones, soft pewter silk was chosen for the curtains, which reflected light back into the rooms. The new palette also served as a simple, refined backdrop for Claire’s collection of paintings and objects that she has collected over the years. Initially, the kitchen featured stripped pine doors, a flagstone floor, white tiled worktops and a large range in the fireplace, which would have originally been coal fired. The range was replaced with an Aga and framed with 19th century Rajasthan pillars, which were chipped so Claire painted them with chalk paint. The pine kitchen was taken out to make way for a new, soft grey kitchen with Carrara marble worktops, which she customised. “I’m not keen on thin worktops so we mitered the edges and created a thick, handsome edge,” she reveals. White-backed glass was installed as the splashback. “It’s easy to keep clean and reflects the light back into the room.” Meanwhile, the dark grey flagstones, which were heavily stained and difficult to maintain, were removed so that they could be used elsewhere on the property, and replaced

with warm, easy-to-clean walnut. Claire also updated a vintage French farmhouse table with a white-backed toughened panel resting on it while the adjacent room was fitted to be a fully functioning laundry and pantry for extra storage. In the dining room, the walls were painted a soft duck egg blue. The oak floor, however, presented a challenge; it had been stained orange, which is tricky to change without obscuring the wood grain. Claire resolved the issue with floor paint, creating a pattern of white and taupe squares, which toned down the orange and lifted the room, giving it a sense of drama. “I think dining rooms should be about theatre and entertaining for your guests,” she reflects. Inspired by her time in Sydney where she saw buildings with original tin ceilings, she used wallpaper that resembled old pressed tin panels and inserted foxed mercury mirror glass into the alcoves. “I wanted to reflect light but considered that normal mirrors would be a bit harsh, so the speckling on these [foxed mercury mirrors] really helps tone it down.” Murano glass wall lights were installed, the radiators were boxed in, and the chandelier was placed low over the dining table to create a soft mood. The fireplace tiles offered the finishing

touch – Claire painted them with her my own version of Delft designs. The living room presented the repeat problem of stained orange oak flooring. “This time I painted the boards white and laid a large Moroccan rug.” The same pewter curtains were hung and were complemented with grey velvet sofas while a range of lights – some for reading; others for mood – were added and a steel fire curtain was installed on the fireplace for added safety. Claire created a dramatic space in the main bedroom. “I had a hunch that we could take the ceiling out and expose the eaves because of the shape of the roofline.” She was correct, and the extra height creates a sense of flow from the double-height hallway. The bedroom was painted white and a dressing room with built-in cupboards fitted, creating a fresh, calm and tidy space. There were originally three doors in the room: one entrance; one leading into the dressing room; and one next to it opening into the bathroom. Claire blocked the one opening into the bathroom and added a door between the en-suite and the dressing room. “It flows really well and gives the bedroom a more spacious feel,” she says. Claire was determined to give her bathroom some personality. “The bathroom is such an important room –

it’s where you prepare to sleep or start the day so I believe it’s a great spot to have your favourite or inspirational pieces around you.” She created a stunning space with highly patterned Carrara marble panels on the walls of the shower and beneath the dado height for the rest of the room, a large walk-in shower, large freestanding bath and she ensured plenty of space to display artwork and sculptures. Claire’s home interior isn’t yet complete, but far from daunted, she relishes the continuing project. “It’s great to have a work in progress,” she says. With her interior design assignments taking her around the world, Claire’s unusual finds include a striking oil painting by Australian artist Makinti Napanangka (pictured left), a vintage Beni Ourain Moroccan rug and a wire table lamp bought at a degree art show in Bath. Her mix of antique and contemporary pieces along with her own handiwork has resulted in that easy yet elegant look that made the home in Something’s Gotta Gives so envied.

HomE ComfortS my aesthetic is… Eclectic for my own home but I get to work with different styles for clients. I can’t live without… A really good bed. After a good night’s sleep, you can tackle almost anything. my style no-nos include… Looking up to see light bulbs in wall lights; having to put your arm through the water to adjust a shower; freestanding washbasins in bathrooms, which lack space to put anything down. Good design is about making something look terrific and being easy to use. my top décor tip is… When choosing a wall colour, always paint a large sample on a white board and move it around the room. Live with it and see how it changes in varying light. my other tip is… When planning lighting, always pay attention to what the light will reflect off – it makes a huge difference. Home is… Your sanctuary. It should be where you chill and unwind; where you are comfortable with family and friends. www.bhomes.com | 45

JuMeirah village CirCle Mouhanad Fadel, Sales and Leasing Manager, on living in a new community

Jumeirah Village Circle has been designed to provide a sense of community. Located in the heart of new Dubai, it offers all the modern facilities of a city but in a tranquil, village-like setting. With its parks, children’s play areas, jogging track, sports fields, and mosques included throughout the abundant green expanses of the development, it caters for the whole family, including pets. JVC is known for its low-rise buildings and is situated opposite Dubai International Stadium, close to Mall of the Emirates and the metro station, and 15 minutes’ drive from the Dubai World Central airport. The area is easily accessible, with a bus shuttle service to Mall of the Emirates and its metro station, while new bus routes will commence in the near future. There are a variety of properties in the area, including apartments, villas and townhouses. Sizes start from 450 sq. ft. to 550 sq. ft. for a studio to spacious three- and four-bedroom villas, ranging from 3,000 sq. ft. to 4,500 sq. ft. The apartments feature a study or maid’s room, basement parking,

a gymnasium and swimming pool, garden and kids’ play area, plus some buildings also have a Jacuzzi. Villas and townhouses include garage parking for two cars, maid’s and a study room, while some villas offer a swimming pool, too. While the new JSS International School is under construction in JVC, there are also a number of renowned schools close by, including GEMS World Academy, which is an International Baccalaureate school located in Al Barsha south; American School of Dubai, and Dubai National School, both situated in Al Barsha 1; Dubai British School, located in The Springs; Dubai International Academy, located in Emirates Hills; and Regent International School, situated in The Greens. There is plenty of further development under way, too. The Circle Mall is currently under construction, with the aim of opening at the end of the year. As well as the two entrances from Al Khail Road, two other entrances have recently opened on Hessa Street and there are plans to open further entrances from Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road in the future.

The distinguishing feature of NAS Dubai is a sense of pride in belonging and a genuine interest in being at school that all students share. We are quite traditional and we take the matter of good manners very seriously. As an international school, we recognise that courtesy is a universal value. We are respectful and polite and I think this is something that we must always care to be. Linked to this, we share a ‘no mobile phones in school time’ policy and are sensitive to the way that social media engagement may be foreclosing the options for deeper human interaction. As part of the Nord Anglia group, we benefit from very unique links with 44 premium international schools worldwide and our students enjoy the opportunities for exchange, travel and communication through our Global Campus initiative. Our nurturing of international mindedness is an essential preparation for our students’ professional futures.

When recruiting for positions at NAS Dubai we look for positive energy, dedication to excellence and a passion for the work. Our teachers understand and enjoy their responsibility of working with young people. They nurture

confidence, innovation, creativity and resilience through personalised learning, ensuring our students continuously grow and learn. As a result, our students enjoy coming to school. While we are comfortable embracing the needs of the school and educational systems to measure progress with standardised assessments, we also know that each of us has a unique profile.

Is there anything else parents should know about?

Our students, staff and parents work closely together and appreciate the special sense of belonging that is felt throughout our school community. I hope that over time, we can prove, in smaller or greater measures, how our students became better people for being at NAS Dubai.

Principal of Kids Kare Nursery Lynn Farrell on its holistic approach to learning What sets your nursery apart from others in the city?

Kids Kare Nursery is a British Curriculum, Early Years Foundation Stage nursery. The curriculum focuses on seven key areas of a child’s development. It is a holistic approach to learning, treating each child as unique and supporting play-based learning, with classes based on UK ratios as well as standards. The nursery has been successfully operating in the heart of JLT for more than five years and is well established within the community. Regularly inspected and accredited by KHDA, the Dubai Health Authority and the Local Municipality, it ticks all the boxes. A strong partnership with parents and caregivers is reflected in weekly newsletters, regular parents meetings and scheduled events and outings with families. The nursery is also open yearround and is only closed on local public holidays to support JLT’s local working community, which sets us apart.

Is there anything else parents should know about?

We are proud to be the first nursery selected in Dubai to work alongside Dubai Health Authority in rolling out Healthy Plate Mates nutritional awareness programme to combat unhealthy eating and lifestyle from a young age. In addition to this, a voluntary healthy eating programme is in place whereby meals are provided to students for a small additional cost. The proceeds go to DHA’s Humanitarian Department, which will be used to help combat childhood malnourishment in countries of need.
