Much like our homes, we’ve given this issue a stylish upgrade to now include fleshy expert tips, trends for every nook and corner, and plenty more design ideas to inspire you.
Managing Director Victoria Thatcher Editorial Director John Thatcher

Wood flooring can make the room feel instantly homely, but most homes in Dubai are equipped with marble floor tiles as standard. Luckily, swapping those tiles for boarded floors isn’t as much of a hassle as it used to be. If you want to transform your floors, consider Kährs’ latest collection, Götaland, inspired by the so-called Swedish region. It features a choice of five three-strip vintage oak floors, so you can choose from light and airy to dark and earthy for that rusticmeets-Scandinavian vibe. Available at Nordic Homeworx
Bargain Hunt Shopping for furniture and homeware is a habit we can never lay to rest – there’s just always something new and pretty to brighten up the home. If you’re anything like us, too-frequent trips to your favourite stores in the mall can take their toll on the bank balance, which is why we’ve fallen for Aati at Dubai’s newly opened The Outlet Village. Specialising in premium, contemporary designer furniture and accessories at outlet prices, you’re sure to snap up a steal.

BOLD AND BEAUTIFUL Indigo Living collections are highly anticipated every season for their diversity, use of colour and homely vibe, making you feel as though you’re living in a perfectly curated showhome-style setting. The autumn/winter 2016 collection fuses finesse with warmth, featuring a palette of black, gold, rust and red as well as more neutral shades. The Bold Rust look creates an Italian vibe with rich hues and accents, while Cream Obsessed focuses on sophistication, with natural quartz, subdued tones, bold brass and geometric patterns. The Modern Metro collection radiates an uptown-chic feel, combining leather, wood and a sleek marble coffee table that’s particularly caught our eye. Silver Streak, on the other hand, boasts a mix of inky hues, polished stainless steel and tactile elements like natural horn and quilted leather. If all that isn’t enough, keep your eyes peeled for renowned interior designer Kelly Hoppen’s Retrospective Collection, soon to be launched at Indigo Living. The brand will be the only distributor of her furniture range here in the UAE.
T R E nding Tap s
Gadget alert
It might come as a surprise, but tap water in the UAE is both clean and safe to drink. While we’re making the switch, we’d like a glamorous and eco-friendly option to upgrade our kitchen at the same time. Step forward these two stylish mixers… Need hot water in a jiffy? The Zip HydroTap offers boiling, chilled, filtered and sparkling water on demand. The appliance is fitted under the sink, so you don’t even need to sacrifice countertop space to fit it in. Not only will it save you money in the long run, it’s also environmentally friendly. Get ready to pour yourself a glass of crystalclear water with retained fluoride. From Dhs15,170, zipwater.com Quooker, a seriously eco-friendly tap that dispenses still and sparkling, chilled, filtered and boiling water that’s free from from toxins and chemicals is another option worth considering. Its patented high-vacuum insulation ensures the tap’s standby usage is low and, because it dispenses the exact
amount of water required, it also helps to reduce wastage. Choose from seven different finishes: polished or brushed chrome, stainless steel in black or silver, brass, patina brass and – if you so desire – 24-carat gold. From Dhs4,390, call 800-Quooker (02 666 7889)

s a rule of thumb, use graphic papers on feature walls only. For surrounding surfaces, plain or textured coverings should be used to maximise the impact of the feature wall. Opt for lighter-coloured wallpapers in areas that have little daylight, as this will instantly make the room appear brighter. Also, if you’re planning to use wallpaper in areas that have a high moisture content – bathrooms and some kitchens – check before buying if your favoured wallpaper is suitable to hang here.

it’s a mix and match of contemporary and classical. i love the warm materials of old (solid wood, raw metals) and the simple lines of modern design.

i love sharjah’s Old souq, as its carpets and rugs reflect the culture and traditions of their countries of origin. You’re not just buying an accessory for your furniture when you buy one of these; it’s more like a piece of art.

Paintings and carpets – because i feel the value of craftsmanship in these items is incomparable. i have two paintings from an art village in Bali and another from an artist friend of mine, Taline Balian. i love handmade carpets and some of my favourites are from Turkey (Hereke and Bunyan), as well as a silk piece from Kerala.

Styling your Sofa How many cushion s is too many ? And should you mix or match? Creating a sofa setup that ’s as visually enticing as it is comfor table is easy with the help of our insider guide
A Winning Combination Working from the outside in, the ideal cushion arrangement starts with two 22- to 24-inch square pillows, followed by two 16-to 20-inch cushions (preferably in tonal hues), two matching patterned cushions, and one differently shaped cushion placed in the centre. a combination of textures, layered colours and mixed solids work best. and remember that odd numbers are visually appealing, so either opt for three, seven or nine cushions (or more…).

i’ve come across this problem quite a lot here in the city, especially with those living in villas or apartments where the living room has full exposure to the sun. reupholstering the sofa with a fabric that’s suitable for outdoor environments is one of the best ways to go about it. You could look into options such as Dedar’s Micro Tricot, a soft woven fabric that’s 65% polyester, or Perennials’ ritzy, a 100% solution-dyed acrylic product with a nano-seal finish that makes it durable and easy to maintain. Home specialists in Alserkal Avenue offers an upholstery service and an extensive selection of outdoor fabrics that can be used indoors, too.

it’s important to have a window covering that allows just enough sunlight to flood the room, while blurring the view for anyone looking in. i’d highly recommend adding in sunscreen roller blinds, which protect your privacy, allow daylight to come through and also look incredibly stylish in any home setting. These are made from a mesh-type PVC cloth that reduces heat, glare and UV rays, making it ideal for summer. Hunter Douglas has a great selection and you can pick from a wide range of colours and patterns to suit your bedroom and the required daylight and visibility.
my little black book Ceebo Shah, founder of Creative Clinic (the interior designers behind The Act, Catch NYC and Maison Bagatelle, to name a few), shares his must-shop addresses For wallpapers : Squisito carries an amazing curated selection that you can’t find anywhere else in Dubai.

Children’s bags, shoes and kits can occupy quite a large sum of space in the entryway, an area of the home that’s meant to be clutter-free and inviting. Design House stockholm’s Björk storage baskets are the perfect solution. You can find them at D.tales and literally chuck anything in there on a daily basis. i’d suggest allocating a storage basket to each child, and labelling it with their name. Another option is to combine a selection of West elm’s storage baskets – they come in various sizes, shapes and colours, and work very well under consoles in the entrance area or on top of a chest of drawers. For bits and bobs like keys and badges, leave a stylish tray out on the surface. Marble slabs and gold or silver trays are quite trendy at the moment. Don’t forget to remind family members to cooperate and drop off their items in the designated spot.

Which type is right?
Whether you want it for fun or fitness, there’s a style of pool to suit your needs. Gaurav Chhugani, sales manager at Desert Leisure, talks us through the options I n f I n I t y: Most common for beachfacing properties or gardens with a view, this gives the swimmer the infinite effect. the water overflows into one channel, constructed on the pool wall facing the views. f I t n es s : this pool offers the perfect solution for those who want to combine leisure and exercise. Space is plentiful in these pools, designed specifically with the intention of swimming laps.
Ov e r f l OW: Similar to the infinity pool, this one is for those who want water to flow right to the top so that it overflows into the surrounding drain below. s k I m m e r : this traditional pool boasts a water level that is 100mm-150mm lower than the pool deck. pools are available in various shapes and styles, and are perfect for angled gardens. P lu n g e : Small in size but deep, this is one to jump into to invigorate the body. Great for Dubai’s hot summer months, and compact spaces. f I b r eg l A s s : these are quick to install but factory-made, so there is less opportunity to create a pool of a particular size or shape you require.

A few additional extras can transform how your pool looks and how you use it. Here’s how to perfect your poolscape Submerged lighting is a great way of giving your pool a glow. consider adding in LeD lamps (more eco-friendly and economical than halogen lamps), which can be controlled by remote to mix up the mood. hydrotech (hydrotechuae.com) offers a good range.
TO P T i P Installing a chiller to cool your pool is an extra, ongoing expense. Adding a shade is an inexpensive alternative; although it won’t actually chill the pool, it will help keep it cool enough to use throughout the summer. try the coolaroo rectangle Shade Sail (from Dhs399 at Ace).
Installing underwater music will lend a touch of cool to a pool. United technology (poolsuae.com) can run you through all the options. tiling your pool and the area around it is a simple way to put your style stamp on it. there are plenty of varieties to choose from, including stonework mosaics and glass ceramics. pavers & Decks (paversanddecks.com) is a good place to start your search.
Ask the eXpert Duncan Denley, managing director at Desert INK, on the main things to consider before deciding on a pool
F
irstly, think about how you’re going to use the pool. You will notice that many people don’t actually swim – they sit on the steps, take a quick dip to cool off or play with the kids in shallow water. A shallow pool will therefore be used more frequently and is also more affordable than a deep pool. Likewise, you may come to realise that a small pool can perfectly meet your needs, which can save a huge sum of money. All swimming pools in the UAe require the permission of the local municipality. You may also require a letter of no objection or an approval from your master developer in some free zones. In order to gain this approval, the pool will need to conform to certain requirements, such as ensuring that there are pool ladders. however, expert swimming-pool contractors know exactly which permissions you will need and take ownership of securing these approvals on your behalf.

REAl oR light Sy n t h E t i c g R A SS ? i t U p Rajiv Kumar, outdoor supervisor at Dubai Garden Centre, and Jennifer Lalani, operations manager at Green People, argue both sides
Duncan Denley, managing director at Desert INK, explains why less is most definitely more when it comes to lighting a garden
There’s nothing like a bit of greenery to create a beautiful landscape. But whether you opt for real or fake grass, there are advantages and disadvantages to both. “Real grass cools the air and also purifies and improves the air quality. Fresh grass absorbs the heat, too, so compare this to artificial turf that can get extremely hot during the summer season. Certainly too hot to walk on without having something on your feet,” says Kumar. However, Lalani points out, “You don’t have to water synthetic grass, which means over time you save money while being more environmentally friendly. When it does collect dirt or dust, all you have to do is sprinkle it lightly with a hose, so it requires little to no maintenance. The grass is completely safe for both children and pets, and it will last for over 10 years.”
“A common mistake is to fill the garden with huge lights, ruining the atmosphere and sense of exploration,” says Denley. “With the exception of any potential hazard areas, such as steps and pool areas, you can afford to keep the ambient lighting low, to create an inviting, romantic setting. I highly recommend using LEDs, which are safer, use less power and last longer than traditional lights. Ensure that you use warm light, rather than white light, as this will give your garden a lovely candlelit glow. Light the flowerbeds, dining area and any surfaces you’d like to illuminate. Simple spike lights are cost-effective and widely available – and, when fixed onto trees or walls, provide the majority of the light your garden actually needs.”

g E t i t l A n D S cA p E D Duncan Denley, managing director at Desert INK, on the landscaping trends to watch
“Minimalism is now key as designers are starting to realise that less is more. Gardens are typically intimate spaces and too much complexity often leads to a very expensive mess that’s difficult to maintain. Keep it simple and elegant, with a core theme for furniture materials and accessories. Landscape architects in challenging climates similar to Dubai, such as Australia and Arizona, are starting to create landscapes using local materials and plants. Several examples of this will come to fruition this season, such as the use of local gravel, plants that are either native or well-suited to this environment, and earthy materials like corten steel (a weathering steel traditionally used for shipping containers) and gabions (cages, cylinders or boxes) filled with local stone.

Which type of furniture best withstands the sun?
We must be careful when decorating our outside spaces and choose only certified furniture specifically made to last outdoors. Especially given the strong heat in the UAE, it is important to put special emphasis on the material of the furniture. This doesn’t just allow for the furniture to last a long time, but also helps it maintain its appearance. When shopping, go for either teak or rattan pieces that are compatible with the local weather. Shades of brown and natural colours help conceal damage quite well, and are easy to maintain and take care of, so are a great choice for outdoor furniture overall.
How can you protect wooden furniture from climate damag e?
In general, outdoor wooden furniture needs more care than that indoors. It is important to clean it regularly to get rid of excess dust and moisture, helping the furniture stay strong and durable. Depending on the material, it might also be a good idea to use specific agents that aid in this process. For example, if you have furniture made of teak, use teak oil to maintain colour and keep the wood strong. Another option is to keep your outdoor furniture covered when not in use.

he whole Dubai Marina area has long been a popular choice for expats coming into Dubai, but with The Beach flanking its buildings, and a cinema and a plethora of restaurants and cafés right on its doorstep, it’s easy to see why, for many, Jumeirah Beach Residence is the place to be. Thea Myhrvold, founder and CEO of teachmenow.com (a global digital platform connecting qualified teachers and students) is part-Norwegian, part-Arab, and has been visiting Dubai – from Saudi Arabia – since she was a
child. Goals of someday living in this community were made long ago and, when Thea found herself moving to the city to launch her first company, she gravitated towards the beachfront development. Little did she know, it would also be where she would find love. “My husband and I both lived in JBR’s Rimal towers and it was only after our first date that we realised we were a floor apart,” she recalls. After getting married to Christoffer Thorsheim a little over two years ago, the couple decided to remain in the area and invested in the largest loft JBR has

Better Homes Magazine | Home to offer, in Sadaf. “We love the area as you can walk everywhere and have the beach and facilities all around. We were looking for an apartment to live in for a while, and realised there was plenty of potential with this one,” she says. Walls were broken down, floors were stripped and the apartment was completely revamped to become the sunlit, spacious home it now is. “It’s a bright and very unique loft,” says Thea. “The most stunning feature is the large floor-to-ceiling windows.” Those windows now afford unrivalled views of The Palm Jumeirah from within, after the couple got permission from authorities to tear down the large wall that backed the balcony and replace it with glass. In contrast to all that light, the couple’s love for dark wood and leather provides a singular colour scheme throughout. The open-plan living room features an IKEA chair upholstered with genuine brown leather, a chessboard

signed by Magnus Carlsen (the world’s best chess player) and an Arabic-style coffee table from THE One, showcasing Thea’s part-Arabian heritage. Influences from the Arab world are also visible in lanterns placed all over, which add a pop of colour. A boudoiresque wallpaper brings it all together, matching the hues of artwork such as the couple’s brass Oscar de la Renta wedding-invitation stamp and a piece depicting tango dancers, which was a gift from Thea’s cousin. Thea practised ballet for years – she still does occasionally – and upon walking up the stairs, a gorgeous photo of her in motion is on display. The couple are quite the art fanatics and boast a piece from a Norwegian artist – a wedding gift from Thea’s aunt – as well as a Steeltown Records frame that holds a record bearing Michael Jackson’s first signature (when he was around five) along with those of The Jackson 5. “Chris won this at a Bonhams auction and it’s got quite a backstory,” says Thea. that designed Ralph Lauren’s store interiors. “We love their shop, so went in and asked for the interior designer’s name. They were the most professional company I have ever come across – they fitted everything within three hours, and matched the panels to the floor in the bedroom as well.” The refurbished wooden staircase leads to an open bedroom, where a Ralph Lauren custom leather bed sits in all its grandeur. Since the couple enjoy the openness factor, floating shelves were added in to make the room flow smoothly. In one corner clothes are stored on simple rails, and in the other lies a chest. Tech-savvy Chris installed drop-down blackout blinds and a large projector screen that descends near the bed, acting as a very comfortable home cinema. His next project involves upholstering the dining chairs, which were picked up at a vintage shop. It’s obvious Chris also has an eye for design, picking out pieces like a mini wooden door with intricate detailing from Afghanistan, and choosing flooring for the entire home. Parquet-style tiles cover the terrace and were added in as a hassle-free, low-maintenance option.
The tiling here has been levelled with the floor indoors so that the dining table can occupy both spaces, allowing those seated to enjoy the best of the sea breeze during winter. The couple spend most of their time in the living room or the kitchen, where they cook together. Thea blushes while revealing Chris makes the best lasagne, and she loves pancakes, too – although, most days, they eat healthy Mediterranean food after a session at the complimentary-access gym below the building. They brought down the kitchen walls to make one large living and dining space on the ground floor, and also opted for a grey and white colour scheme in the kitchen to retain that sense of openness. A guest bedroom with a minimalistic theme was also built downstairs, behind the living room. Since the community is teeming with culinary options, when they’re not cooking, the couple either order pizza or Arabic food, or head to Blue Jade at The Ritz-Carlton, Dubai for sushi. With a classical, vintage-laced feel exuding comfort and warmth, we probably wouldn’t want to leave the comforts of this home often, either.

he owners of this Golden Keys apartment in Moscow, constructed in the late 1990s, commissioned an interior overhaul by Oleg Klodt Architecture & Design Studio. The brief? A complete redesign in keeping with the brand’s signature neoclassical style, with room for an innovative, contemporary approach. The Eggersmann kitchen island made of blue stone is the perfect example of this – but it’s just one of the multiple highlights of this beautifully designed home where originality meets function. “We embraced this great challenge since clients that are ready to accept a wide range of ideas are a rarity,” says Anna Agapova, Oleg Klodt’s head of interior design. “We found opportunities for playful quirkiness at every step.” The 250 sq. m. downtown home belongs to a family with two children and is sited in a luxury residential complex that covers more than six hectares, with grounds laid out by Moscow’s best landscape designers. It’s like a city within a city, an oasis among the capital’s skyscrapers. Inside, it features bright colours, contemporary shapes in giant classical stucco, level concrete floors with marble-faced walls and traditional herringbone-patterned floors made from French honey-toned timber. The apartment itself stuns from the very front door, covered as it is with metal panels and studs. “Despite our elegant and incisive house style, this project has its own piquant vibrancy, due to the colour scheme we’ve used,” says Agapova. “The owner requested
our bureau’s intelligent European style with a little humour. It was something we aspired to for completely understandable reasons, with results that are dynamic, cheerful, and easy to live with.” The building’s stucco and marble are classical stylistic elements that, says Agapova, “form an ideal background, are comfortable to live with and allow us to create a design concept full of exciting accents – furniture pieces, décor, art objects – yet without cluttering the space”. They also offer the opportunity to play with the lighting and make a really liveable interior. Access to the living room is from the corridor, a part of the house that reveals the owners’ love for Spanish finds. “The floor is paved with the kind of tiles found in the old lanes of Barcelona, conjuring up a feeling of being in Catalonia. Bookshelves line the corridor on both sides and are brimming with Spanish-themed books. In the living room, continues Agapova, “Geometric lines are softened with a classic beige sofa from Sofa & Chair and an unusually shaped floor light from Nicholas Haslam. Cushions in bright tones bring the furnishings to life and pair perfectly with the earthy-hued Pepe Penalver drapes, while Julian Chichester side tables and a blue Morgan Furniture sofa are placed on soft handmade Riviere rugs to complete the setting. “The kitchen-dining space comprises field-panel doors, a custom-designed extractor hood made from distressedlooking metal by Oleg Klodt, faucets from Kludt, Restoration Hardware

bar stools, and Miele, Küppersbusch and Liber appliances. Industry meets tradition in this setting, and the dining room boasts neutral shades, a bespoke-design table, Brabbu chairs and a Henge chandelier. The master bedroom is relaxed yet stunning, with Evittavoni curtains, oak flooring, a Toulemonde Bochart rug to unify the space and a Sofa & Chair headboard. Lighting solutions can make or break a room and the Porta Romana chandelier injects just the right amount of colour and character. The Julian Chichester bedside table and Chaddock Home sofa exude a homely, comfortable feeling, lending warmth to the room with their darker shades. The children’s bedrooms are vibrant but stylish, nevertheless, both boasting unusual angles that prompted the addition of timber moulding with
The resulting interior doesn’t have an age you could easily guess, nor a style or a brand a classic trim. The green bed from Robert Langford in the first bedroom complements the Nicholas Haslam table lamp here, though further harmonious features are noticeable all around – such as the Vitra desk chair, Pedret chandelier and unicorn (the client’s own piece). The second children’s bedroom is more masculine, with Ralph Lauren table lamps, Robert Langford beds and Juliet Travers wallpaper. None other than Jonathan Adler was chosen for the bathroom chandeliers, alongside Ivanka flooring and Restoration Hardware units. “It’s one of our guiding principles to exclude glaringly mass-produced branded items. The resulting interior doesn’t have an age you could easily guess, nor a style or a brand. Instead it’s achieved by a completely individual approach to the whole project and its contents and, in many ways, reflects the owner’s personal character,” says Agapova. Ultimately, the aim was for these interiors to tell a life story, and that’s been achieved with style.
