Welcome to the March issuE

I

n this issue, we speak to perhaps the most famous interior designer in the world. Due to a hectic schedule that spans the globe and takes in a huge variety of commercial and residential projects, as well as books, TV appearances and product designs, it took a while to pin Kelly Hoppen (page 34) down for the interview. We also met another busy designer… In fact, Jumeirah Islands-based fashion designer Mariam Yehia (page 46) had to postpone the day of our original scheduled home shoot because she went into labour and gave birth that very day. Elsewhere in this issue, we speak to partner at MCML Studio (UAE) Patrick Rochette (page 22), who advises on buying mid-century collectibles. He’ll be showing at Design Days Dubai (14-17 March), the region’s top fair for limited-edition contemporary design, for the first time this year. George Foster (aka Mr G), creative director of House of Design (page 26), reveals that he’s a big fan of shadow boxes for showcasing travel mementos while, further afield, architect Riaz Ebrahim (page 40) explains how he maximised the breathtaking views of a South African family holiday home.

Ask the eXPert Patrick Rochette, partner at MCML Studio (UAE), on where to begin Start with a crush – pleasure should be your first motivation. And the best way to find mid-century modern collectibles is to let the opportunity come to you. Perhaps you fancy an object you discover in an antique shop or at a flea market… You should only answer two

22 | bhomes.com

questions: one – do you like it; and two – will you be happy to have it at home? Buying a mid-century modern object should be an investment of passion, whether it’s a ceramic lamp, a pair of flashy armchairs or a beautifully crafted wooden sideboard. When you’ve spotted your object, you want to make sure that it’s an original one and not a re-edition or a

1919 leather armchair with plate in gold detail, Dhs27,000, reNzo Frau by poLtroNa Frau Group Me reproduction. You also want to feel that you’re paying a reasonable price. Mid-century modern collectibles are becoming very fashionable and sought-after, so some price tags can be quite high. It’s always preferable, when you go for good quality and exceptional pieces, to buy through a dealer specialised in this period. You should always buy first editions.

The Comptoir team are amazing, which makes the experience all the more enjoyable. Nakkash Gallery is a very special place as well, especially for the bigger and more practical items.

Décor inspiration

I have a very eclectic style. I prefer to keep things quite minimal, yet find myself surrounded by memoirs, artefacts, books and big cushions. I draw inspiration from different elements of nature. I’ve come to realise that my surroundings are a reflection of my cultural journey; travel is a very big

part of my life and this has become apparent in my taste. A great style inspiration of mine is my cousin, the renowned designer and interior architect Ali Behnam Bakhtiar.

Shelves are great display spots for art. You can place framed artworks casually among books, hang smaller pieces on the walls at the back of the shelves so they become part of the vignette, or even hang artwork at the front of the shelves. You could also display a collection of ceramics or double the space up as a bar and show off some crystal glassware.

Transform bland bookshelves into stunning displays

In an important room such as your living room, shelves should be a little more styled. Whether you need to pack your shelves with books or just want to make use of some empty space, there are plenty of ways to show off and unify your display – just make sure you follow the style of your home when you’re accessorising it. If your space is modern and streamlined, you might want to consider having just a few strategically placed large objects on your shelves and make the most of the back walls of the shelving with mirrors to create depth, rich colours or a striking pattern for the ‘wow’ factor. If the setting is eclectic or traditional, layering accessories works

well. If you’re a bookworm, then simply organise your books with an at-home library. Classify your books by category and line them up vertically, pulling them forward so their spines are flush with the front of each shelf. If space isn’t an issue, turn your books on their side and stack them up, leaving space between them for a chic yet simple look. You can then use the stacks as risers and crown each with a curious item. Alternatively, you can break up a row of books by taking an especially beautiful book and facing it out on a plate stand. Instead of organising your books by category, you could also arrange them by colour for a rainbow-hued display. bhomes.com | 25

Ask A designer Our interiors expert solves your queries and shares his hidden gems in the city George Foster (Mr G), CEO and creative director at House of Design I have quite a lot of decorative objects and mementos that I’ve picked up on my travels. Can you suggest how to display them in an interesting way? I’m a big fan of shadow boxes. They’re a great way to showcase photos, decorative objects and mementos. Not only do shadow boxes add an element of drama to a space, but I think they also make beautiful wall art. I purchased a set of old paintbrushes in Barcelona, for example. Instead of just having them on a coffee table, I strategically placed them in a shadow box to hang on the wall (pictured right). I’m reminded of my trip every time I pass by. Having recently moved into rented accommodation, I’m keen to furnish it with a few key American coastal-inspired designs. Where do you recommend I look without breaking the bank? Quintessential American coastalinspired design is such a refreshing and clean aesthetic. It’s also very popular. I’d recommend colour schemes of both cool and royal blues mixed with white and a pop of red, complemented

mY LITTLE BLACK BOOK FOr sTATEmEnT pIECEs:

by distressed wood. Accessorise with touches from the sea such as coral, shells and white stones. This style is well regarded for effortless appeal, but a lot of work goes into it. The key is to remain consistent. If you stick with the theme and colour tone, you’re on your way to the coveted style of many homes in New York’s Hamptons area. With that in mind, there are a number of stores you can visit to get this look. From Ikea to Pottery Barn, Flamant, THE One and The Bowery Company, or even having pieces custom-made.

For something unique and out of your design comfort zone, the workshops in the Al Quoz area are great for this. You might have to take the time to look there, but you’ll find some really great pieces that you can build your design around. For example, a large artwork by a local artist, a Persian rug in a shadow box or a small Arabic door on the wall adds lots of drama to a space.

I have a windowless maid’s room that I’d like to turn into a study. What can I do to give a dark, square, featureless room some personality? My advice is to embrace this dark, square, featureless room for what it is. You can add personality and depth with rich textured wallpaper. I would suggest using a bright colour or a pattern to bring some light and life to the space. Once this is done, you’ll be able to see that the room has already changed. You can take it a step further with the study by anchoring a desk to the wall, so that you have additional space for seating and accessories. To make the space a bit more cosy and also a happy workspace, I would add an inviting desk chair, such as a Gramercystyle chair with velvet upholstery. A shadow box with your favourite travel finds will be the perfect accessory.

Belgian brand Thibault Van Renne makes great rugs. They are perfect for a number of the residential projects that I work on.

a world of

inspiration

Interior designer Kelly Hoppen on her love of Middle Eastern design, harmonious neutrals and keeping focused Interview: Lucy Land Kelly Hoppen MBE is perhaps the most famous interior designer internationally, having built up a hugely successful business designing residential and commercial properties, holiday resorts, and yacht and aircraft interiors alongside her online store; she’s also the author of numerous books. We catch up with the globetrotting Queen of Taupe… Whereabouts in the world are you right now? I’m currently at home in central London but I’m constantly working abroad and I love to travel – it brings me so much inspiration. I would love to say that I have the chance to fully explore all of the countries I get to visit but I do tend to have a very chaotic schedule of meetings, interviews, speeches and dinners. I hope to have a little more downtime in the near future so that I can really appreciate my surroundings. You’re known for your East-meets-West look – how have you found the market in the Middle East? East-meets-West is my design philosophy. I absolutely adore visiting Asia and it inspires me a lot in my designs. That’s not to say that the Middle East doesn’t have a huge impact on the way that I work. I love the opulence of the Middle East and the way that its culture is completely unapologetic. I’ve worked with many Middle Eastern clients over the years in places such as Oman, Riyadh, Jeddah, Dubai and Beirut, to name a few. I love working with designers based in the Middle East; the superb craftsmanship and detail involved in Middle Eastern designs is extraordinary, though I think that Middle Eastern homeowners are now taking a lot of inspiration from the minimalist styles of the West. I recently designed a home for an extraordinary Middle Eastern man, who had a beautiful collection of Persian carpets that I hung from the walls around the stairs of his home, making a feature of the wonderful craftsmanship rather than using them for their purpose. The end result was stunning. Why are neutrals so important to you? My style is constantly being reinvented but the basics of it will always remain the same. I use natural tones and sumptuous fabrics to create understated elegance, which is an aspect of all my designs. Neutrals are calming and harmonious. Colour can have a very evocative effect on your emotions so it’s important to keep things as harmonious as you can, and that is the elegance that I maintain throughout my brand.

What challenges have you faced when working in the Middle East? It can be difficult managing projects when you’re not on the ground and able to pop in each day and check on things. However, we have an excellent team at Kelly Hoppen Interiors, who work around the clock on our international projects, ensuring everything runs smoothly and according to schedule. How do you get fresh inspiration? From travelling the world, sourcing accessories and encountering new people to reading books and watching films while I relax at my cottage in the beautiful English countryside, I am constantly soaking in inspiration in my day-to-day life. Also, when I have some downtime to relax and reset my mind, whether it’s on a plane or in the comfort of my home, I’m able to think and find plenty of inspiration that way. What’s the best part of your job? I love every part of my job. Since I was young, interior design has been a passion of mine so work doesn’t feel like work to me. I’m also incredibly lucky to have such a great team to work with. And what’s the worst? That there’s not enough time in the day. I’m constantly expanding the business and working on new things. What’s your proudest moment so far? I’ve had some incredible moments in my career. However, my proudest moment so far has been receiving my MBE from the Queen in 2009 for my services to interior design. How do you unwind? I like to take mini-breaks to recharge my batteries – a weekend away here and there really helps. I also find that regular exercise is incredibly relaxing so I make it a part of my everyday routine. What’s your philosophy on life? I live by the motto ‘Nothing is too big and nothing is big enough,’ which keeps me focused. What’s next? As usual, I’m incredibly busy working on projects all over the world. I also have several collections in the pipeline and I’m always designing new pieces for my e-commerce site. Modern chic

This Hacker-designed kitchen (hacker.ae) belongs to blogger Edwina Viel and her family, who live on Palm Jumeirah. An internal wall was removed to create a large open-plan area leading into the garden, while the central Volcano Arden Blue Silestone peninsula has seating for six with Softline bar stools, ideal for the whole family. Bocci pendant lights spotlight the peninsula and all the drawers have interior LED lighting, which creates a soft mood when combined with the plinth lights. The white high-gloss lacquered cabinets are handlelesss and the terra oak open shelving adds a natural element and contrasts with the white. As Edwina is a passionate cook, Miele appliances, including a teppan-yaki plate and side-by-side combination and steam oven, were installed. Durable ter Hürne Luxury Vinyl Tile flooring in dark oak was fitted throughout and botanical wallpaper injects an organic feel with a striking modern graphic print. “Our new family kitchen has transformed the space in our house and it has also changed our lifestyle as a family to be able to do more together in the home,” Edwina enthuses.

W

hile kitchen designs remain diverse to suit personal tastes, sleek styles, quality brand names and high-tech design are key features of contemporary kitchens. Streamlined kitchen-living spaces also continue to be popular in 2017. Well known for its handleless kitchens, Miele’s latest innovations include the TempControl induction hob, which constantly maintains the correct temperature via sensors embedded in the ceramic screen, while the cleverly designed Pearl cooker hood allows even the tallest chef plenty of room to look down into pans. It’s also extremely energy efficient, automatically adjusting suction power to what is cooking on the hob below, and has LED downlighting. Meanwhile, Gaggenau, known for its professional-grade appliances, launched the extremely quiet, highly efficient wallmounted hood 200 series, available as a vertical or angled design, this year. Its flex induction cooktop with integrated ventilation system can be set to automatically vent air whenever in use. Gaggenau has also developed a world-first innovation with its backlighting concept for its dishwasher 400 series. Using LED lighting, the interior of the dishwasher is perfectly illuminated from every angle in an instant. Not to be outdone, Teka has the iHood® extractor hood, the first home appliance to be adapted to an Apple product. And now they’ve created the world’s first touchcontrolled sink. The iSink includes tap and touch control for 17 temperatures and five water volumes. bhomes.com | 37

Smart and smooth

Franke (Franke.com), the provider of intelligent systems, is the go-to brand for easy-to-use yet high-tech kitchens. Its Crystal range includes Dynamic Cooking Technology (DCT), which enables you to simply select your recipes, and the oven will automatically programme cooking your menu. Plus, its low-energy function allows the use of several appliances at the same time.

He is referring to Restio River House, perched on the banks of the Buffels River, close to its mouth in Pringle Bay – a small coastal town near to Cape Town, which makes the most of its lush mountain-valley setting. “But it wasn’t without its challenges,” he reveals. “The glazed north and west façades maximised the views from all living areas and bedrooms yet potentially increased the heat gain in the house during hot summer months so, as part of the design, we added cantilevered overhangs to these façades to minimise direct north sunlight and heat gain into these spaces.” Hard-wearing materials, resistant to the tough coastal climate, were chosen and plenty of access to the surrounding fynbos (vegetation found in South Africa) were vital to the design, while the surrounding landscape and the internal courtyard included indigenous species, such as three iconic South African trees – milkwood, coral trees and waterberries. “The living level opens up to the courtyard and garden to create a seamless relationship between inside and outside,” Riaz explains, “while soft indigenous garden landscaping further extends the site into the landscape.” Previously a characterful but run-down old brick beach house with a neglected landscape, the property had belonged to a family for six years preceding its rebuild. This meant that the family, who worked closely with the architect and interior

designers, had a good insight into the complexities of the site, which included carefully considering the relationship of the house to the sun path. “The house faces due north with a large stairwell that floods morning light into the kitchen area,” Riaz enthuses, “while the westerly façades of the lounge and terrace look towards Cape Point, the most southerly tip of Cape Town’s False Bay, and offer fantastic haloed sunsets in the early evening.” The collaboration has resulted in open-plan rooms, which flow seamlessly, forming one extended living zone and central space. The welcoming kitchen and lounge area is at the centre, with a sofa in the kitchen that is large enough to seat the entire family. “The living rooms have a direct relationship and the flow between these spaces add a unique dynamic to the house,” Riaz says. Interiors firm ARRCC added custom-made sofas and a dining table in neutral tones. As the house’s intended use is a weekend getaway, the relaxed interiors exude stylish comfort. Textures such as suedes, linens and sheepskin were used to create a sense of calmness and to add to the overall feeling of informal relaxation. “The clients have a good eye for all aspects of design and have a great appreciation of South African artists,” says Mark Rielly, director of ARRCC. “They decided to use some of their existing pieces, which we could easily incorporate into the overall design.” Consequentially, the selected pieces feel like they were almost created for the spaces. There is a sophisticated, eclectic

mix of easy-living and comfortable furniture. Shades of white and grey fabrics are accented with original Moroccan Berber rugs and colour kelims, complemented with solid French oak coffee tables and lacquered round timber stools. “We opted for a more quirky and fun style to suit the purpose of the house yet not compromising on style and luxury,” says Mark. These playful elements include the punched brass cladding to the lounge fireplace as well as a graphic lighting installation from Flos. The dining room features a custom-made table by James Mudge that is accentuated by the Lindsey Adelman pendant light, while the black Magis chairs are softened with sheepskin throws. Artworks have been carefully curated and include artists such as Deborah Poynton and Albert Coertse. However, the art is limited to key areas of the home for maximum impact. The neutral colour palette and modest furniture pieces of the bedrooms allow the incredible views to be the focus as ever-changing artwork each day. Behind the scenes, the home is technologically enhanced with the latest audio lighting and systems that can be automated for time of day – with the beauty being in its understatement. Finishes to the home include the use of terrazzo doors, while its overall beach-house style is integrated via modern finishes in the likes of the marble-layered panels that extend up the bathroom walls. “It is an iconic, true-to-style South African family holiday home,” Mark says proudly. “And a sense of mystery is created through the various spaces glimpsing each other.”

Fashion designer Mariam Yehia’s family villa in Jumeirah Islands is an oasis of pared-back neutrals to balance her busy personal life

“W

e chose this location in Jumeirah Islands because I needed the space, says fashion designer Mariam Yehia, referring to her family villa. She had to postpone the first date with Better Homes Magazine because she went into labour and gave birth on the day of our original scheduled home shoot. Two months later, we return to meet Mariam; her two-monthold son Noah; her one-and-a-half-year-old daughter Isabelle; her husband Bassel; and her visiting sister, bridal designer Yasmine.

ideas | Better Homes Magazine

Mariam didn’t just need the extra space for her growing family, however. As a fashion designer and self-confessed shopaholic, she also needed an atelier where she could meet stylists and clients for fittings, plus extra space for her personal collection of clothes, shoes and accessories. “I’m not really into two-floor spaces to live in,” she admits. “I prefer an apartment because I think they’re cosier.” Last year, while Mariam was working in Paris, however, her husband, Bassel, rented the neighbouring Jumeirah Islands villa. “He said, ‘I have a surprise for you’. He knew I would love it,” she enthuses. The family moved into their current home in August 2016. “I’m really happy because everything is in the right place now,” says Mariam. With its neutral base and touches of Middle Eastern influences, Mariam’s current home is very different to her previous apartments. “One was ultra modern; the other was boho chic and it was pretty dark – the reception-area walls were black with lots of mirrors.” She puts her changeable style down to being a contrary Aquarius. “When we moved here, I knew this would be a family house that we would live in for some time and it had to be neutral so it wouldn’t compete with the other colours in my life,” Mariam says. She cites her vibrant collection of clothes, the children’s toys and her fast-paced lifestyle as some examples of those hues. “We have a lot of people to stay – and often, they don’t even call to let us know before they arrive – so I needed something that would really balance that part of our lives.” How does she avoid bringing her fickle nature to her home décor? “When I move I have to do it all at once,” she explains. “I will spend three days not sleeping to fix things and ensure that everything is in place. If I would go and buy accessories now, it might be a bit different and I would add more spice to the house.” Though there’s a generous dining area facing the high-ceilinged open stairs and leading onto a seating area that overlooks the garden, Mariam and her family spend most of their time in the cosy living room. “It’s where we have guests; it’s where we watch our series; and I love to sleep on the sofa,” she reveals. She enjoys a morning coffee at the kitchen table with her family, though – it’s where they set their plans for the day. She purposefully kept the kitchen simple and homely: “I wanted it to be like our family home in the countryside in Egypt so there’s plenty of wood.” Mariam and her husband brought all the furniture from their previous home to the new one – the desk in the atelier was a dining table in their previous apartment, and chairs in the atelier were previously used to furnish a lounge. “I didn’t throw away anything from the old apartment – if you move somewhere with more space, you can shift things around.” Only her gazelle’s head, bought from Marina Home before Mariam was married, has been difficult to place. “It was like an outsider in my previous apartment – it was hung on the balcony because it didn’t match anything.” The piece seems to have found its place in the family home, though. “It fits the mood perfectly,” she says.

There’s one item that Mariam believes doesn’t need investing in – sofas. “In Dubai, most people move around a lot so you can change the look of a couch by changing the covers.” Her sofa is from Ikea. “Everyone shops in Ikea because it’s great for basics but when you see it in every home, it can make your own feel less personalised so I’ve made sure the accessories and side table in the living room are from elsewhere. In contrast to the rest of the home, the children’s playroom is a riot of colour. It’s also crammed with soft textures. “To avoid accidents, I didn’t want any couches or tables so I thought of the Arabic style of seating on the floor,” Mariam explains. “And racks are easy for storing toys.” The children’s bedrooms are also unconventional. “I think pink for girls and blue for boys is too commercial, plus I was brought up to be strong and independent so I want the same for my kids,” she says. Instead, Mariam chose a calm palette of taupe and beige, and personalised the rooms with wooden letters spelling their names. “Their rooms are for bedtime and meditation so the toys are exclusive to their playroom.” Mariam’s passion for style is evident in her dressing room, which has the look of a curated boutique. Clothes and shoes line the all-white walls; handbags, sunglasses and accessories are beautifully displayed. She admits that most of the items in her dressing room are waiting to be worn. Moving towards her bedroom, I learn that most of the wardrobes are for Mariam. “Poor Bassel – this is his closet,” she says, showing me the little space she’s left for her husband. Yet Bassel’s shoes are stylishly presented. It’s clear that Mariam’s sense of style isn’t lost on her family. “One of the first things Isabelle said was, ‘Mummy – wow,’ because she loves fabrics and colours,” Mariam smiles.

I think pink for girls and blue for boys is too commercial

Home comforts extrovert or introvert? I’m a mix of both but probably more of an extrovert. style rules I don’t follow any boundaries or guidelines. It’s exactly as if I’m dressing up – I start with whatever piece I want to wear. my most precious things are… My clothes, my atelier with its collection, and my bags. I don’t get too attached to furniture. Home is… My comfort zone. bhomes.com | 51

which nurSery? Mena Press, manager of Dovecote Jumeirah, on her nursery’s holistic approach to education What sets your nursery apart from the other nurseries in Dubai?

At Dovecote, we nurture each child in a way that will contribute to who they will become during their formative years. Play is at the heart of all we do and our holistic education, where children are active learners in our unique community that provides a home-away-from-home environment. Children and their parents become part of an extended Dovecote family.

Tell us about your team…

I’m incredibly proud of the fact that our staff retention rate has remained at 95% year-on-year since our opening. Despite the transient nature of Dubai, Dovecote staff are dedicated and loyal, something that’s reflected in their work. With an average teaching experience of 15 years and a wealth of knowledge, staff build a fantastic relationship with their students and understand how to get the best from each child. We adhere to Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) ratios, with small class sizes that are age appropriate. Also, the staff are all mothers so can easily relate to the parents.

Anything else parents need to know?

Every day is different at Dovecote and children arrive excited at what they’re going to experience. We have lots of themed days and there’s always a wonderful buzz. The children’s interests are taken into account to give them a real-life link to what they’re learning and our students are from all over the world, fostering an incredible environment where children can learn from different cultures. The best advice I can give parents is to completely trust the staff at your child’s nursery. If you spend the day worrying, then it’s not the right fit for you – trust your instincts.

Dovecote is small, but well-equipped. With six big classrooms, two large open areas with plenty of natural light, a garden where children can grow their own plants and vegetables, and a mud kitchen, it’s warm and welcoming and we display children’s work throughout. We also have a library and a traditional approach to learning – children are encouraged to spend time in nature and be inquisitive with their hands.
