his month, I finally got round to checking out the flamingo colony at Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary, which reaches its population peak in the winter. See our edit of designs celebrating this famous bird silhouette on page 19.
As we move into, arguably, the best time of year to be in the UAE, we have plenty of design inspiration to help you recreate that holiday feel in your own garden (page 34). We also explore ways to cosy up your living space, with advice from interior designer Emma Hutton (page 24), layered looks (page 27) and we also chat to dhurrie specialist Elizabeth Morrison (page 32). We also see the return of annual design showcase Dubai Design Week. Now in its third year, the event promises to be bigger and better than ever, with a programme of more than 200 events that opens with famed architect Sir David Adjaye in conversation with Emirati commentator Sultan Sooud Al Qassemi, while the Global Grad Show brings together 200 works from 92 of the world’s top universities. Discover head of design at Dubai Design Week William Knight’s style secrets on page 26. To coincide with artist Kate Toledo’s exhbition at ProArt Gallery, we toured her Jumeirah villa (page 38), which was akin to a tour of an exhibition by its curator, accompanied by the vivid stories of where each curio has come from. And finally, if you’re looking for a new home, check out our guide to Green Community (page 50), which offers spacious living in a verdant oasis.

veining that makes it a work of art. Hugely versatile, marble can be incorporated into flooring, walls, kitchens and bathrooms. “Marble accessories, such as a lamp, bring a luxurious touch to any room. Create a chic look by teaming marble with glamourous metallics or achieve an understated feel when combining it with a monochrome palette. You
don’t need to stick to neutral colours, however. Pairing marble with jewel tones creates a stunning contrast – I love dark green and cherry tones combined with brushed brass. This keeps it very much on-trend and adds a little shine to your living space. You can also team marble with other natural materials, such as leather and wood, for an earthy, natural style.”

Create comfort to make your room feel special “For inspiration, start with something you love, such as a piece of art or a cushion. This ensures the space reflects your own personality,” advises interior designer Emma Hutton (hollandsandhutton.com). All sofas and chairs can be dressed so they suit the style of the room, so prioritise comfort when choosing seating. Lighting is also very important. For the evening, lamps give a softer feel than overhead lights. Plus, they can helpfully disguise any marks caused by children or family pets.

“Accessories add the finishing touches to any space. Hand-pick some of your favourite books, family photos and trinkets that you have sourced on your travels. Place items on a large silver tray on a coffee table or ottoman, and pile books nicely together. Every living area needs greenery and scent – I suggest an orchid on a console or coffee table, along with a scented candle. Warm greys for the walls are a great way to create depth and provide a lovely, clean canvas for showing off artworks. Texture is also very important; wool throws on the sofa and cushions, showcasing a variety of different fabrics, makes a gorgeous, cosy mix.”

Ask A designer Our interiors expert answers your queries and shares her hidden gems in the city
Rawan Wazzan, interior designer at Interiors Furniture I love entertaining and have a large dining area to furnish with seating for eight people. What advice can you give for a luxurious yet warm look? Firstly, establish the foundation colours of your space with different shades of neutral colours, such as tan. To add harmony to the base, use shades of taupe for the wall paint, wood moldings and curtains. Underline the overall theme with a complementary warm colour; this can be added via a large painting, a colourful pattern on one feature wall or on fully upholstered chairs paired with a wooden dining table. The addition of unique wall decorations, such as an antiquated mirror on one wall, or stone cladding with two wall lights finished with brass or bronze, will create a luxurious look. Table accessories add more richness and cosiness. I would like to choose a statement sofa for my living space. What will I need to consider, as this will lead the design direction for the room? The first thing to consider is the style of the sofa – a statement sofa needs to have a unique design that connects with the rest of the room without becoming lost within the space. The colour of the sofa will depend on the final look you are trying to achieve. If you want a cooler look, go for tiffany green or blue on a soft linen fabric with a set of patterned throw pillows. For a bolder look, a vibrant cayenne leather or a velvet royal blue sofa will add a pop of colour to the room. To create contrast and make the sofa stand out, ensure the shade of colour for the sofa is the strongest in the room. However, for a leather sofa with a solid colour, you should use a darker, contrasting shade on the walls. As the statement sofa is the focal piece in your living
room, it should be complemented by subtle coloured chairs and minimalist accessories that tie the design of the room together. How do I choose bold lighting in the dining room? The basic rule for statement lighting in the dining room is to place your light fitting around the dining table and hang it at a relatively low height – 95cm above the table is ideal. Choose a unique design and shape that will add a graphic impact to the room. If you have a rectilinear space, choose an organic lighting fixture to add softness to the area, while a bolder shaped chandelier will enhance the symmetry of an asymmetric space. Consider a vibrant colour that connects the different sections of the dining area, with all the items merging into one focal point: the lighting fixture. Have the courage to mix up styles in the area to create a distinct identity. Finally, do not forget to build different layers of light throughout the room.
My little black book For lighting: There is a good range of brands and designers available at Interiors Furniture. For traditional and regal styles, I love Mariner and Chiantese, while, for contemporary fittings, Uttermost, Giorgio, Cornelio Cappellini or Mariner Gallery are all fantastic options.
top décor tip: Add life to your design through the addition of natural elements, such as flowers and plants, to create a harmonious look.
What’s your dreaM buy? Any furniture from Cornelio Cappellini – I adore his unique concepts and materials. Specifically, I love the leather Jordan sofa, which is a handmade piece featuring high-end leather from Santa Croce, Italy, and finished with precious metal.

Steal my Style William Knight, managing director and head of design at Dubai Design Week
Design DNA
Function is a priority, but form has become increasingly important to me. I like to call it off-minimalist. I love sleek surfaces and my furniture needs to be practical, particularly with two children in the home.
Which up-and-coming designers should we be keeping a close eye on?
Lujane Rezk is a designer we’re working closely with for this year’s Dubai Design Week. Along with her collaborator, Albert Kolambel, we have devised Screen; an installation for one of the key points of entry to d3, which draws on influences from mashrabiya [traditional Arabian screens].
Wallpaper or paint?
What I do and what I say are different things. I love pattern and hugely admire wallpaper designers. You see some amazing and beautiful designs available, but I don’t have any in my home. There is something alluring – and obviously minimalist – about a plain white wall.
What do you predict will be the key interior design trends for 2018?
Biophilia, and our on-going fascination with plant and natural life, and the multiple colours and textures it provides. As Dubai continues to appreciate the outdoors, there will be a greater flow between inside and out.
Colour combo to try

Go bold and let it pop. Teal is one of my favourites, which is best combined with a neutral shade.
What advice do you have for creating a beautiful home?
Think about your visitors and their experience of being in your space. I think that makes a difference between a home and a beautiful home.

Dhurrie specialist Elizabeth Morrison on the ancient skill of weaving in India and creativity in the UAE Interview: Lucy Land Irish-born Elizabeth Morrison fell in love with India when her Scottish-born husband introduced her to the country more than 15 years ago and proposed to her at the Taj Mahal. She left her high-flying former career as an advertising director to set up From Jaipur With Love, a company specialising in handcrafted dhurries from Jaipur, in 2013. Where do you live and why? In an old villa in Jumeirah 3. Our neighbours are a wonderfully interesting mix of locals and expats and we’re close to schools, shops and restaurants – our home is the heart of our world. What inspired you to specialise in dhurries? I wanted to promote artisans in India – the ancient skill of weaving and spinning cotton is in danger of being lost. It’s a skill that Mohatma Gandhi felt important enough to put at the epicentre of his long campaign to free India from British rule. Tell us about the craftsmen you work with… The artisans we work with are mostly farmers, living in small hamlets in the state of Rajasthan. They supplement their farming income through weaving. Why do you think it’s important to support handmade production? I think it is amazing to know you have bought a product that has been lovingly made by a skilled artisan whose father and forefather has been weaving for hundreds of years. How gratifying it is to know that the product you have chosen for your home is made by hand, and is a product that is directly improving the livelihoods of those less fortunate. How do your dhurrie designs come about? Many of the designs we are using have come from historic designs that have been around for hundreds of years – we

just modernise them through the use of colour and simplified lines. India has such a rich architectural history, dating back to the 16th century, so we don’t really need to look too far for inspiration. Who are your customers? We have lots of Emirati clients, who typically want larger rugs for their homes, as well as Europeans, Indians and a growing number of local and international interior designers. What is your take on the local design scene? There are so many creative and clever people here in the UAE and we are beginning to see more and more creativity emerging from everywhere. How would you describe your personal aesthetic? Eclectic and classic. How has your Irish background influenced your style? I have always had an interest in design and tradition, which was probably inspired by my Irish roots, upbringing and my glamorous mum. Despite its small size and population, Ireland is home to many international creatives, including artists, writers and designers, so perhaps some of that creativity rubbed off on me. What are your home décor rules? I don’t have any: anything goes. What are you currently working on? Developing new colours – these have been a work in progress for the last six months, so exciting times ahead. And what’s next? More philanthropic adventures in India. fromjaipurwithloverugs.com

rtist Kate Toledo’s Jumeirah villa has the feel of an Aladdin’s Cave meets art gallery. Sculptures of three wise monkeys sit on the front door step, while a playful crocheted otter by Shauna Richardson, a series of portraits by Japanese artist Tomoko Sawada and side tables adorned with finds from Portugal and Brazil are among the treasures that greet visitors upon entering her home. Every wall demands attention and, in preparation for a forthcoming exhibition, Kate’s own vibrant paintings are stacked up on the floors, leaning against the hallway walls. Born in Tanzania, Kate grew up in Africa and New Zealand. She spent 20 years in Brazil, where she met her husband, Dr Luiz Toledo, a renowned plastic surgeon, before they settled in the Middle East in 2006. The couple now split their time between Dubai and Lisbon, and travel regularly for work. For someone with such an international upbringing, a location’s sense of history plays an important role in where Kate calls home. “I love this neighbourhood. It might not be as old as Deira, but it’s an older part of Dubai and the villa is well constructed, with solid walls and marble floors.” Kate found her move from the world’s 12th largest city (by population), São Paulo, to Dubai incredibly calming. “We initially chose this area so our daughters would be close to Jumeirah College, but it’s also a good location for amenities. I shop at Mercato Mall daily – it’s a quintessentially Dubai place – and I enjoy walking the dog in this neighbourhood. I always prefer to live in a town environment, like this one, rather than suburbia.” It’s a totally different way of life to her experience in Brazil, where she daren’t let her children outside the property for fear of their safety and it was difficult to move around due to the sheer number of people. However, there are similarities between São Paulo and Dubai. “Religion is a very strong part of daily life in both cities,” she says. Meanwhile, her other home, in Lisbon, has an Islamic connection. “We live in a 300-year-old building in one of Lisbon’s oldest areas, Alfarma. It’s an Arabic-influenced neighbourhood, with skinny streets and women cooking sardines on the footpaths to avoid their tiny apartments smelling of fish.” With her sense of rootlessness, Kate finds an affinity with the UAE, which not only offers a home to a huge number of expats, but to those who are unlikely to stay long-term due to the country’s visa requirements. “There’s a sense that most of us are passing through Dubai – there’s nowhere else quite like it because you can settle in most other places until you die.” Kate also, however, appreciates seeing the development of Dubai. “There aren’t many places that go through such an incredible amount of change in such a short space of time. The pace of construction here is incredible – I feel very honoured to witness it. State funding for fields, such as the arts, doesn’t seem to be so much of an issue in the UAE as in most other places, either.” Reflecting her values, nearly every item in Kate’s homes is handpicked, salvaged, given or inherited.

“Everything in the house has some kind of history,” she explains. “Most of our purchases are made on our travels; they are old things that aren’t easily available; and they make a statement to me.” Like many artists, she is a collector. “My husband says that if you have more than three, it’s a collection,” she muses. Her collections include inlaid wooden boxes with a scene of Pão de Açúcar [Sugarloaf Mountain] in Rio de Janeiro, which are no longer made; metal mugs picked up on various travels; art, books and propaganda materials from Mao Zedong’s era (she has a fascination with dictators); Murano glass from the ’50s; African masks; Portuguese faience as well as preColumbian pottery. A tour of Kate’s home is like a tour of an exhibition by its curator, accompanied by the vivid stories of where each curio has come from and how it has found its place in her home. Among the huge
variety of pieces, from different places and eras, there are rugs from Africa, numerous books and prints of New Zealand landscapes by an English artist that she has inherited from her parents; a Chinese collection that includes a painting of laughing faces, ancient porcelain that was once shipped around the world, and intricately carved furniture bought from a Chinese lady before she returned to her home country; and cushions featuring prints of Kate’s own designs. We complete our tour in Kate’s entrance, marvelling at Shauna Richardson’s piece. “When you enter the door and see this sprightly otter jumping for joy,” she says. “You can’t help thinking that life isn’t that bad.” The Portuguese Collection by Kate Toledo runs until Thursday 30 November, ProArt Gallery, Palm Strip Mall, katetoledo.com

or breathtaking views of the Big Apple, head to the 92nd floor penthouse at 432 Park Avenue, which, at 1,396 feet, is the tallest residential building in the Western Hemisphere. Once inside, you’ll discover an abode bathed in southern light and boasting panoramic views of nearly every New York landmark, from the Empire State Building and the Statue of Liberty to Brooklyn Bridge and beyond. It’s fitting that Kelly Behun was the interior designer chosen to work on this penthouse in the iconic skyscraper with wow-inducing views. A protégé of Philipe Starck from the time he was collaborating with hotelier Ian Schrager, she knows a thing or two about creating comfort amid splendour. Perhaps unsurprisingly, her favourite aspect of the apartment is the views through its oversized windows. Ironically, these also presented her biggest challenge: to ensure that nothing she did within the apartment would distract from the stunning vista. “To have all of Manhattan unfurl below you in this way is nothing short of extraordinary, and nothing I would do inside could ever upstage that, so I just sought to create a warm embrace from which to enjoy it,” she says. “My goal was to create a timelessly elegant space that feels warm and comfortable.” The penthouse comprises three bedrooms, three bathrooms, a powder room, library, laundry room and service entrance that is separate to the elevator landing. It also includes a windowed eat-in kitchen with marble breakfast bar, gas and wood-burning fireplace, oak flooring and a master bathroom featuring statuary book-matched marble floor and walls, a freestanding soaking tub and a 1,200lb solid cubic marble vanity just like the other residences within the building. And, of course, there’s the huge 12’6” finished ceiling heights and 10ft by 10ft windows. Kelly was tasked with the challenge of creating a model apartment rather than having a specific client to design for. “As one never knows who will ultimately live in this penthouse, I imagined various scenarios and profiles, such as an artcollecting, jet-setting couple; a New York family with young children; and a glamorous actress. Ultimately, I fell in love with the space, so I designed it with myself as the client in mind.” This resolved the problem of attempting to appeal to everyone, which tends to end up appealing to no one. Located in the heart of such a vibrant city, Kelly focused on creating an oasis of calm, a place to recharge. She custom-

designed a free-form, omnidirectional sofa that commands the centre of the living room, which is complemented by a custom-shaped rug. “The rug is shaped to follow the irregular outline of the sofa, which itself was made to reflect the topography of the skyline,” she explains. Lighting was an important element of the design direction: all of it was chosen for its sculptural qualities and the mood it would evoke, as well as the quality of light it produced. “I chose the wonderful Jason Koharik chandelier hanging over the dining table because it reminded me of the jagged lines of the Chrysler Building, which feels so close beyond the window that you could almost reach out and touch it.” In the hallway, an installation of pendant lights by Apparatus hang at different heights to create a visual rhythm of the space. “To me, it felt like the syncopation of a jazz melody,” Kelly reveals. The floor lamp, in the living room, is reminiscent of the moon when it is full over the cityscape, while wall coverings are hand-painted with organic patterns. Contemporary furniture designs by Lee Broom and Anna Karlin have been mixed with vintage pieces from Vladimir Kagan and other original designs from Kelly Behun herself, including a dramatic 20-foot headboard in the master bedroom. “It is one of my favourite custom pieces, a homage to the great modernist painter Frank Stella,” she says, proudly. Meanwhile, Yolande Batteau, the founder of Callidus Guild, was commissioned to create a Venetian plaster installation for the fireplace wall, which is based on a deconstructed Art Deco geometric pattern by Kelly and is reminiscent of Ruhlman, Rateau or Dunand. The residence is accented with artworks by both known and emerging talent, such as Jack Pierson, Dean Levin, Helen Frankenthaler, Lynda Benglis, David Choe, Vincent Collin and Luca

Nichetto. Indeed, Kelly describes the design aesthetic for the home as Park Avenue chic meets art gallery. For the project, she worked with art and education resource Artsy, which has thousands of partner galleries. “It was a treat to be able to curate a collection with them and work with some of the blue chip galleries in Manhattan,” she enthuses. “It’s a wonderful way to showcase artworks in a residential setting – I think it makes it easier for potential clients to connect with a particular work.” An avid believer in the effect of colour and light on mood, Kelly aimed to recreate the shade of inky blue that the night sky turns over Manhattan in the wallpaper of the second bedroom. “There is something about the way the light from the buildings interacts with the sky; it almost never turns black, but more of a very deep blue.” She worked with Calico Wallpaper to create a very specific shade, which was painted over with silver leaf paper, so that it catches the light beautifully. “Being in that room at night feels like the sky has entered the room. It’s quite magical.”

Escape the hustle and bustle of city life by heading to verdant oasis Green Community. It's the perfect place to relax

Green CoMMunity Katarzyna Zietara, Residential Sales Consultant and one of the Better Homes' Top Consultants for 2016, has lived in Green Community for more than six years. She reveals why it’s her favourite neighbourhood
Filled with green trees, lush parks, lakes and fountains, Green Community in Dubai Investment Park is a verdant, secure community where you’ll discover children cycling and people walking their dogs on the cobbled pathways. It’s a very welcoming, international community, too, with 45-plus nationalities calling the neighbourhood home. Perhaps due to its abundant facilities, it is a very easy place to make friends. The Courtyard by Marriott is a popular spot for neighbours to catch up over dinner, while the self-sufficient community also includes a mall (Market Mall), with numerous restaurants; coffee shops; supermarkets; and bookshops. You can also find beauty and healthcare facilities, from NMC Hospital, dental surgeries and chemists to hair and nail salons. There is a fitness centre, plus plenty of other children’s activities available, including football, karate, music, dance and art, as well as familyfriendly sports facilities, such as tennis and basketball courts, cycling trails, community pools and walkways. Green Community is well located on Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road (E311), close to Sheikh Zayed Road (E11)
and Emirates Road (E611). It is also near to Jebel Ali Freezone and to Al Maktoum International Airport. Bus links are good and a metro station is currently being built to coincide with Expo 2020 Dubai – Green Community will be the closest neighbourhood to the mega-event. The community offers spacious living for everyone, from 550 sq. ft. studio apartments to 6,900 sq. ft. six-bedroom, luxury villas. The fourbedroom bungalows are unique to Green Community and make ideal family homes. Every property is finished to a high standard and these comprise mostly of single row properties backing onto parks and winding walkways, making them good value for money. Schools include Greenfield Community School, which offers the International Baccalaureate education system; Dovecote Green Primary School; The International School of Choueifat; British Columbia Canadian School; and Nibras International School. For many, the choice of schools is a big draw for moving to Green Community, but the quality of living that the neighbourhood offers will likely ensure you stay.

Life’s a hoLiday Whether you need a short-term rental or want to lease out your home, Better Homes Holiday Homes has you covered
Alisha Azzopardi, Portfolio Manager for Better Homes Holiday Homes, and her team looks after 100 fully-furnished, serviced, short-stay apartments in the prime areas of Dubai Tell us about Better Homes Holiday Homes… We recognise that those staying in the UAE for less than a year may not want the hassle of shipping or buying furniture, or the responsibility of maintaining a home. Our holiday homes, which are fully furnished and managed by us, provide an alternative to longer-term contracts. Plus, our homes are more affordable than staying in a hotel, but offer a similar level of service. We offer a range of properties, from compact and great value studio apartments to spacious properties in some of the most desirable districts. Our service is also ideal for property owners, who want an income from

their investment, but don’t want the permanency of a long-term tenant. Who is using the service? We have five different types of people using Better Homes Holiday Homes: holiday makers; business travellers who are working on short-term projects in Dubai; companies that provide their employees with accommodation for short and longer periods of time; new movers, whose Emirates ID isn’t available to enable long-term property leasing; and residents who require temporary accommodation in between moves. How do we get started? The process is very straightforward: simply contact our customer care team, which will assign you to someone who will find a suitable tenant or property to match your personal requirements. Why does the service appeal to business travellers? Many business travellers prefer holiday homes over hotel stays, as they
are familiar with the city. This allows them the freedom to come and go as they please and also creates a home away from home feeling. What period of time does short term cover? You can check in for a minimum of one week and up to one year, depending on your requirement. What about the small print? All lease terms, including price, can be negotiated on an individual basis to suit your requirements, creating a customised experience. Most apartments are also pet-friendly upon prior approval. What’s the most popular area for people staying short-term? Waterfront properties are a favourite among our guests. Dubai Marina and Jumeirah Beach Residence (JBR) are the most popular locations. 04 409 0998, holidayhomes.bhomes.com

lAndlord sTATus our service is ideal for property owners, who want an income from their investment, but don’t want the permanency of a long-term tenant. Holiday Homes’ landlords have the option to use their property themselves during vacant periods, and Better Homes will take on the burden of a range of services, including maintenance, deep cleaning, and furnishing on your behalf. letting a property on a short-term basis can also be a convenient option for owners, who are planning the imminent sale of their property.
5 Tips To ensure Your Home is reAdY For sHorTTerm leAsing Your property should be in a desirable location to ensure high occupancy rates all year round. The interior dĂŠcor should be simple, yet elegant. We would recommend a clutter-free space and not to overdo it with colour. We recommend an annual maintenance contract to cover repairs, especially while a guest is staying in the property. This is crucial for the upkeep of a holiday home. We provide a mandatory inventory list, which ensures our guests have everything they need. All Holiday Homes should have a good TV package, movies, and high-speed Wi-Fi.

GEMS Wellington Academy Silicon Oasis (WSO) is a very popular school located within one of Dubai’s most innovative, growing communities. WSO’s curriculum is flexible and adaptable, providing a uniquely crafted progression from the Foundation Stage, through an enriched and developed National Curriculum for England and into personalised qualification pathways incorporating both iGCSE and GCSEs. These culminate in one of the richest International Baccalaureate offers in the region. Students achieve outstanding results, which leads to them entering some of the most prestigious universities in the world. In the early years, all students have access to our unique, outdoor education lessons (based on the UK’s Forest School model) and, as students move through the school, we promote the value of taking part in adventurous activity with EcoVenture and The Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards.

opportunities, ensuring that the learning experiences for our students are planned to include the most cutting-edge approaches in education.
Anything else parents should know about?
The house system at WSO provides a nurturing environment in which individual personalities and talents are recognised and supported. As our students grow and develop, the house system provides consistency and comfort, as well as healthy competition and friendly rivalry. Our head girl and boy act as inspirational role models to the younger students and ensure that the voice of the student body is highly valued when making school decisions.
What do your key facilities include?
WSO’s hi-tech facilities stand out above most other schools in Dubai – which is some statement given the quality of facilities on offer in the city. The WSO campus has extensive sports facilities (including three swimming pools and gymnasiums) and the second largest (to Dubai Opera) auditorium in Dubai. In addition to the specially-built outdoor education spaces, children also have access to a blended learning plaza, which provides an exciting setting in which to develop their digital skills.
