WELCOME TO THE OCTOBER ISSUE

O

ur sunny climate and modern homes provide us with plenty of flexibility when it comes to our interiors. It’s also why boho chic is the perfect style for the UAE. The word ‘bohemian’ dates back to the 1800s and was first used to describe people who live a certain lifestyle: wanderers and vagabonds – who certainly weren’t slaves to rules. Adnan Bennani of Moroccan Bazaar explains how to rock bohemian interiors (page 18) and have fun with this personal look. Meanwhile, Home & Soul concept store’s Carol Sukkar has discovered the materials and colours best suited to our humid environment and for maximising our outdoor space. She reveals all during a tour of her Al Barsha villa (page 36). With our weather becoming milder, we’ve rounded up beautiful pieces of furniture and accessories to transform any garden into a comfy outdoor room (page 32). And if you want to live in a lush oasis all year round, check out Green Community (page 51).

Rock bohemian décor and let your personal style shine

“The bohemian aesthetic is an interesting juxtaposition of the unexpected and a perfect blend of old traditional pieces with modern twists,” says Adnan Bennani of Moroccan Bazaar (moroccanbazaar.com). “Consider a blend of Arabesque patterns and geometric shapes in lamps, mirrors, rugs, screens and other furnishings, including textiles and prints, layered with modern silhouettes.” “Pinterest is always a great place to start if you aren’t in a position to travel to the souks of Morocco. Blend natural textures with hammered metal patterns and don’t be afraid of bright bold tones – think of the colours of spices. A metal tray table with turned timber legs, a metal punched lantern, woven baskets and a Berber patterned rug add an instant boho feel to any room, while mirrors of all shapes and sizes create depth. Have fun creating an individual space. There are no rules to this intentionally chaotic style – it is all about blending.”

IN SAFE HANDS Make your home secure with solutions that meet the highest standards

Following six successful years in Gold & Diamond Park, Hartmann Tresore is pleased to announce its expansion to a larger showroom within the neighbourhood (building no. 5), where it continues to showcase its wide offering of certified safes and security solutions, including burglar and fire proof document and data safes, wall and furniture safes, strong rooms and customised Signature Safes. Reiner Kaltenbach, general manager at Hartmann Tresore, answers common queries and shares his expertise... Why should I get a safe? A safe is important for both individuals and businesses. Valuables, including electronic devices, jewellery and watches; documents, such as passports, ID cards, wills, contracts and pension documents; IT equipment; and family photos and mementos can require much effort to obtain or are irreplaceable. Choose a safe that offers certified burglary protection and certified fire protection – while certain items may not interest burglars, they can be irretrievably lost in a fire. Consider where your safe will be placed and its

20 | bhomes.com

lock. An electronic lock means you don’t have to safely store keys, and it usually offers programming for multiple users, while a biometric fingerprint locking system (which is used in border controls worldwide) uses your finger as a ‘key’. You will likely be making a purchase for life, offering real security. Is it possible to open a safe with certain power tools? It is imperative you only buy a certified safe, offering a certain level of burglary resistance and fire proof – the certificate must be issued by a reputable, independent institute, such as the VdS or the ECB-S, based in Germany. This can be seen on a label that is attached to the door inside the safe. Insurance companies usually only recognise certified safes, with a tested proof of burglary resistance. Certified safes have been professionally tested and receive a security grade based on its level of resistance – the higher the security grade, the more protection is offered by the safe and the more it can be insured for.

What are the latest developments in the world of safes? We often integrate the alarm components of a safe into the security of the home, while the commercial sector regularly combines the classic safe with digital operation and control technologies. The use of smartphones as a control for a safe is currently being developed (Hartmann Tresore is working on it through its own subsidiary). However, there is not yet a generally accepted certification procedure in Europe for the safe use of smartphones to open a safe so the use of a smartphone app is more for customers’ convenience. It is vitally important for our industry to have new technologies and procedures but they must be certified – only certified locks should be installed on a certified safe or the certification of the safe is no longer valid.

STYLE YOUR WASHROOM Put some zing into your powder room

“Powder rooms are not the easiest to design. They are usually small and cramped with limited natural light,” says Yeliz Olcay, architect at Hansgrohe. “Bright rooms always look bigger, so consider installing additional lighting, such as recessed wall and ceiling fixtures. Additionally, you can use more and bigger mirrors to reflect the light. Avoid elements that visually divide the space and use the same colour for the walls and ceiling to make the room feel much larger.” “Conceal sanitaryware, design a storage space below the washbasin and avoid clutter, while a gorgeous basin mixer, such as Starck V, will add value to the space.”

ASK A DESIGNER

Our interiors expert answers your queries and shares her hidden gems in the city Zen Interiors

Any more COpy

MY LITTLE BLACK BOOK FOR LIGHTING: Make sure each room has a layer of lighting, such as low level table lamps with warm bulbs, recessed spot lighting for artworks or feature walls, and statement overhead lighting. I use a lot of Flos (flos.com) and Murano Lighting (muranolighting.ae) in my projects, plus we have a new collection (pictured, below), with rose gold, brushed champagne and wood finishings.

FOR STATEMENT PIECES: Every room should have at least one piece in it that you love. Statement pieces tend to be highly personal, but when looking for a wow item, it’s best to look in independently owned design boutiques, galleries and showrooms, such as d3 and Alserkal Avenue.

Merete Broen, co-founder and general manager at Zen Interiors I would like to give a luxury hotel aesthetic to my bedroom. What do you advise? The most appealing aspect of hotel bedrooms is their sense of luxury and relaxation, so the first step is clearing the clutter and ensuring that you have ample storage to keep all clothing and accessories away from view, which will give the room a serene feel. Matching bedside tables and large lamps either side of the bed is a must, as well as a carefully curated selection of perfume bottles or scented candles on a dressing table. Choose white bedlinen with a high thread count, made from natural fibres and plenty of good-quality pillows to replicate a high-end hotel feel, too. My next home project is the garden. What tips can you give for creating an entertaining area that wows? If space allows, create different zones in your garden for entertaining: a dining area, plus a more relaxed

seating area with outdoor sofas or a majlis-style canopied area. Winters in the UAE are mainly spent outside, so it’s worth viewing any exterior space you have, whether it’s a large garden or a smaller balcony or terrace, as potential extra living space. Large pots with evergreen plants, such as palms and grasses add colour and can act as attractive divisions between spaces. I would like to ensure my home interior is in line with the principles of Feng Shui. Where do I start? The basics of Feng Shui are concerned with creating harmonious living environments. Simple changes like ensuring your home is clutter-free, has good air circulation and excellent layered lighting are all good places to start. Create a sense of balance in each room by buying lamps in pairs and positioning one at each end of a long console or at equal heights on side tables, either side of a sofa. An attractive entryway is important, so place matching plant pots either side of your front door and keep every area of your home as streamlined as possible.

FOR HOME SCENTS: Go natural with fresh or dried flowers, make your own pot pourri using dried fruit slices, light naturally scented candles or use essential oils, such as lavender or eucalyptus.

FOR RUGS: I recommend Riviere Rugs (riviererugs. com), Tai Ping (houseoftaiping.com), and we have designed our own, which are manufactured in Turkey.

I love the depth and warmth that a linen, grass cloth or silk wallpaper brings to the most neutral of rooms. Invariably, budget does not allow for this and I tend to use paint throughout, with a patterned wallpaper in the powder room or a feature wallpaper at the back of open shelving or inset into joinery doors. cup out of the material, with plans for new products soon.

How would you describe your design ethos? Utilitarian – everything in a space should have a purpose or a function. If an item seems to only be decorative, it most likely has strong sentimental value.

What’s your favourite scent? The smell that fills the air just before it rains.

What is your take on the local design scene? Without a doubt, it is heading in the right direction. More than ever, there is a strong appreciation for homegrown talent and a regional design language. Dubai has always attracted talented designers from different international backgrounds and they bring with them their personal design languages. However, it feels like the UAE has only recently found its own design language and is starting to express it, with a new generation of designers taking inspiration directly from their surrounding environment and culture. This, in turn, has resulted in architecture, branding and products that feel right at home here. Design should not be considered as imported technology, but one that grows from its environment. How does Dubai inspire your work? The region has an abundance of ideological, historical and material resources available that is often underused. I look into traditional principles of regional design, architecture and planning. Middle Eastern design was at its peak during the Islamic Golden Age [8th to the 14th century] – that era has always been a go-to for my work inspiration. What are you currently working on? Kholoud Sharafi (one of the Tinkah founders) and I have recently developed a new material in our Tinkah workshop. We call it ‘ramel’, which means ‘sand’ in Arabic. It combines Dubai sand with the characteristics of slip ceramic. By creating molds and by pouring our newly created material into it, we can create endless shapes. So far, we have produced an espresso

30 | bhomes.com

What does sustainability mean to you? More than ever, designers need to produce socially and environmentally responsible work. It’s not just about using recyclable materials or recycled materials, but designing something that lasts and carefully sourcing materials.

What can you never part with? My trusty sketching mechanical pencil – I have been using the same one since my first year at university. Now, whenever I don’t have it and I need to sketch, the result looks like a four-year-old’s drawing. What is the most important thing to get right in the home? I live in a one-bedroom apartment and spend far too much time planning the lighting. My experience of working in an architect design studio taught me the importance of getting it right. What does home mean to you? It is a place to regroup, regenerate, heal and rest. I intentionally do not do any work from home. Whenever I need to work at the weekend, I either go to the office if I need to work for extended hours or I pop into the nearest café to complete some quick tasks. What should we look out for at Downtown Design? The Foundry by Tinkah is a brand that produces, showcases and sells products designed by Tinkah designers. Make sure to pass by stand E24 to check them out – we will be showcasing The Foundry’s product line that includes Ramel C01, the aforementioned Dubai sand cups; Natal, a collection of marble and gold planters; Tincase, a range of handbags inspired by Bedouin storage solutions; a carpet collaboration between FBMI and The Foundry (yet to be named); and Grey area, a collection of tableware. “B

eing based in Dubai, while travelling regularly for work has certainly influenced our home décor style,” says Carol Sukkar, co-founder of concept store Home & Soul. “Neutrals and light shades work well because they make rooms look more spacious, create a cooling effect, which is perfect for our hot climate, and they are easy on the eye. I love to mix textures, too, such as rattan with oak, and brass with wood.” Living with her husband and business partner Wael and their two children, seven-year-old Rajai and five-year-old Karim, their open-plan living and dining space is an oasis of calming neutrals, natural materials and a splash of brights from the greenery, metallics and a bluepainted (using Oslo by Jotun) feature wall. Do they struggle to keep the white sofa clean with two young boys? “I have a policy that we all eat together at the dining table so I don’t have to worry about food smears. My only problem is dirty feet, but I can wipe off the dust and call in Churchill Cleaning once in a while – it’s manageable,” she smiles. The couple source homewares for their store during their travels. These include rattan and teak wood furniture from Bali and the Philippines, as well as mango wood products from India. “These materials are very durable in the humidity, plus they work equally well inside and out – we like to mix and match.” The result is that the indoors flows seamlessly into the garden, which has the feel of an outdoor room. Organic seagrass rugs, for example, are used both to furnish an intimate seating area in the lounge as well as the garden. “When I

I LOVE TO MIX TEXTURES, SUCH AS RATTAN AND WOOD travel, I like to find things that recreate that holiday feeling once home, too.” Carol admits that the Betterhomes magazine photoshoot provided the impetus to complete their home. “There’s a saying in Arabic that a carpenter’s door is always broken,” she says. “And I think that applies to me. We’re always trying out the furniture that we procure for the store in our home. We test the comfort of the chairs and the sturdiness of the tables, which means we give the customer real feedback.” Their home is mostly furnished with Home & Soul goodies, artworks picked up from their travels and a few larger pieces from IKEA that have been customised.

40 | bhomes.com

Friend, home décor enthusiast and rising influencer Kalthoum Dumonceau helped Carol with the finishing touches that give the home personality. A painted grey (with Objective by Jotun) niche is furnished with a teak ladder that is used as a magazine rack. The space is decorated with a Moroccan lamp, a candleholder and plenty of plants. Indeed, greenery, lighting and accessories of different shapes and sizes are artfully positioned at varying heights throughout the home, while the grey motif continues in the living space – a painted grey stripe breaks up the white room and gives the space depth. Meanwhile, a wall in the master bedroom has a simple geometric element,

which has been created by placing tape in strategic lines across it, and painting the wall grey before removing the tape. There’s another reason that it has taken Carol so long to complete her home. “Every time I purchase something intended for the house, I put it in the store for my customers.” The sense of flow then, not only extends from her travels back to Dubai and throughout her home, but also into her lifestyle store that she runs with her husband.

HOME COMFORTS I’m obsessed with lights… And I’m addicted to coffee. Adding greenery to your home is so important. It brings life into your home. Home is… With my family.

“I

nspired by its desert location, we chose a warm colour scheme of yellows, golds and caramels,” says interior designer David Scott. Located in Arizona, the US state famed for its ruggedness, the 30,000+ sq. ft. villa he is referring to belongs to an art-loving couple from New York. Long-term clients of David’s, the homeowners wanted to create a home to display the art that they had collected over many years, so the sunny shades provided a backdrop to showcase their extraordinary acquisition of art and antiques. “For me, the guiding principle was to design a contemporary villa with traditional elements that, while quite large, had a cohesive colour scheme,” David explains. The huge entry space provided a formidable decorating challenge. David sourced a rare 9 ft. diameter early 19th century English Recency centre table as well as an exquisite 18th century Italian chandelier, which became the central focus of the 65 ft. diameter rotunda. From there, David then sited his clients’ contemporary art collection. “The homeowners are true

art collectors,” enthuses David. “Most of their works were acquired at auction or through New York-based gallery, Yares Art and they collected multiple works by their favourite artists.” The challenge was to find ways to showcase such an impressive range of artworks in a comfortable, homely setting. “In the case of the Picasso ceramics, we created a concentrated space to display them in the family room,” says David, who also prominently displayed the couple’s well-rounded collection of American colour field and abstract expressionist paintings. The art and antiques were complemented by stunning, sculptural lighting, such as a magnificent handblown Murano glass chandelier by Dale Chihuly, while large, luxuriously comfortable pieces of furniture add to the beautifully calm and balanced feel of the home. Lighting is also used to stunning effect in the home cinema, which was conceived as an oval space, with a fiberoptic starlit ceiling and decorated in rich blue, brass and sapele mahogany. “We featured the homeowners’ collection of

James Bond movie memorabilia inside the theatre, while movie posters from their favourite classic movies were hung in the lobby bar area outside the theatre,” David reveals. A fabulous collection of retro children’s lunch boxes was displayed in a skybox area of the indoor basketball court, while a huge work by American

artist Frank Stella is displayed along a wall in the gym. “The home is a warm, eclectic mix of modern and antique – we always sought the best examples we could find,” David says. “Designing such specific and spectacular spaces, with a broad range of rich materials, furnishings and art was hugely rewarding.”

HOME COMFORTS My top tip is… Find a colour and, like a thread, weave it throughout your home. I also advise… Keeping floors consistent throughout your home. My style rule is…

Don’t abruptly change colours, such as having a red room next to a green room next to a yellow room. Home is… A place where we retreat to and create memories with our family and friends. It is also a beautiful sanctuary that nurtures and stimulates us.

GREEN COMMUNITY Hannah Bakshani, executive senior consultant at Betterhomes, on living in a family-friendly and leafy neighbourhood

Green Community is filled with plenty of lush gardens and parks, lakes and fountains to justify its name. What’s more, the sight and sound of beautiful parrots and other species of bird that have made the neighbourhood their home make the area feel extra special. Attracting families looking for an outdoorsy lifestyle; people working in the area; and commuters based in Abu Dhabi but who want to settle in Dubai, Green Community draws all nationalities. “I love the community because it’s a quiet yet friendly neighbourhood,” says Dr. Raslan, who has lived in Green Community for several years. “My favourite restaurant is Italian eatery Cucina, located at The Courtyard by Marriott.” The self-contained community also includes Market Mall, with its weekly funfairs and numerous restaurants; coffee shops; Choitrams, Carrefour, Al Maya and Park n Shop supermarkets; bookshops; and healthcare facilities. There are plenty of children’s activities available, too, including football, karate, music, dance and art, as well as familyfriendly sports facilities, such as tennis and basketball courts, cycling trails, community pools and walkways.

Covering 67, maturely landscaped hectares, Green Community is well located on Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road (E311), close to Sheikh Zayed Road (E11) and Emirates Road (E611). It is also near to Jebel Ali Freezone and Al Maktoum International Airport. A metro station is currently being built to coincide with the mega event Expo 2020 Dubai – Green Community will be the closest neighbourhood to the global festival. The neighbourhood includes villas and apartments of all sizes, from 400 sq. ft. studio apartments to 7,075 sq. ft. six-bedroom, luxury villas. The fourbedroom bungalows are unique to Green Community and make ideal family homes, while the terraced apartments are particularly spacious, with huge terraces. Every property is finished to a high standard and these comprise mostly of single row properties backing onto parks and winding walkways, making them good value for money. There are numerous nurseries, while schools include Greenfield Community School; Dovecote Green Primary School; The International School of Choueifat; British Columbia Canadian School; and Nibras International School.

WHICH SCHOOL?

Kephren Sherry, deputy principal at The Arcadia Preparatory School, on offering a truly holistic education for students What sets your school apart from others in the city?

The Arcadia Preparatory School follows the national curriculum for England, with exciting adaptations to ensure we reflect where we are in the world and also to meet the needs of the pupils, as future global citizens. Alongside more traditional methods, technology is used throughout the school to enhance learning. A further unique feature of the school is our Junior MBA programme, which teaches the fundamental elements of entrepreneurship. We highly value the wellbeing and happiness of our staff and pupils, too. To this end, The Happiness Programme ensures that the mental and physical health of everybody at Arcadia is put first.

Tell us about your team‌

All teachers come into school two weeks ahead of school opening to receive a bespoke induction programme, including safeguarding procedures, health and safety policy and cultural advice workshops. Heads of departments and year leaders train their teams in planning for inspirational lessons, using technology to optimise learning and assessment sessions to ensure data is used to match learning needs. For all teachers, we offer a programme of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) to echo

our motto: Nurture lifelong learning. Staff throughout school demonstrate a strong team ethic and support each other in driving school standards. It is vital that we are transparent in our approach and we highly regard our school values of positivity, respect, tolerance, creativity, independence and compassion.

Is there anything else parents should know about?

Parent partnerships are at the heart of our school. We respond to parent feedback and as such, designed the Enrichment Learning Programme (ELP). In essence, this initiative makes life easier for parents by extending the school day to incorporate extra-curricular activities for their children. Pupils have a range of opportunities to choose from, such as ballet, coding, cookery and martial arts. Our school also delivers homework within the school day so that pupils do not have to take additional work home with them.
