Welcome to the october issue
I
n the lead-up to this issue, we’ve been excited to see the autumn/winter furniture collection launches, which coincide with a dip in temperature and a return to outdoor living. The new collections take into consideration the space we have available. At Home Centre’s catalogue launch at Emirates Golf Club, for instance, we tested its augmented reality (AR) app, which allows you to view the new pieces inside your existing space – it’s the modern way of finding out if a product fits in your home. Inside this issue, we have plenty of nature-inspired looks, from desert prints (page 15) to natural materials and pared-back simplicity (page 23). As interior designer Omar Nakkash advises (page 28), integrating as much natural light as possible, creating flow and keeping all five senses in mind is key. Award-winning author Annabel Kantaria has successfully combined these elements in her sleek kitchen (page 30). We also take a tour of an Arabian Ranches villa that features a stunning mural of a countryside scene in its master bedroom (page 34). Meanwhile, Lynne Merry, regional visual merchandising manager at Al-Futtaim Ace, reveals how to make the most of a small balcony space on page 20. And finally, if you’re looking for a new home, check out our guide to The Meadows (page 47), which offers a variety of villas in a well-established, verdant neighbourhood.

Ask the eXPeRt “During the Industrial Revolution, the middle classes were able to increase their prosperity and, for the first time, invest in the décor and design of their homes,” explains Hanne Langmead, collection conceptualiser at THE One. “In Britain, the reign of Queen Victoria, between 1837 and 1901, saw the mass production of

countless household items, making them accessible to people who could never have previously afforded them. They immediately began to emulate the aristocracy, filling their homes with accessories, furnishings and fabrics, all designed to showcase their newfound wealth and status. “The Victorians favoured soft, subdued tones, while marble was also popular.
They were great fans of pattern and used it liberally, from curtains and cushions to rugs and wallpaper. Often, multiple patterns were used in the same room. You can imitate this look by choosing accessories featuring geometric patterns or stripes. Alternatively, look to animal, floral or even pineapple designs, which were seen as a status symbol.”

Create a warm and inviting space to relax Do you want a lush place to sit and enjoy the view, or is entertaining a dealbreaker for your outdoor space? Lynne Merry, regional visual merchandising manager at Al-Futtaim Ace, advises defining how you want to spend time on your balcony as a starting point for redesign. “If your aim is to create an inviting dining space, choose one feature furniture set and accessorise it perfectly: don’t try to fit in a lounge-style setting, too. “For a dash of colour, bougainvillea can be a stunning addition to a hot, sunny balcony. if left alone without much care, they look great and give an element of privacy as they grow. Other lowmaintenance plants include golden barrel cactus and gollum, a slow-growing plant that only requires a monthly water. “Those with smaller balconies can save space by hanging flower pots on the railings, combining storage with seating and utilising the wall space to create an intimate and luscious garden. “String lights and lanterns of different sizes – from large corner lanterns to tiny tabletop candle holders – along with cushions, throws and rugs, will create a wonderfully cosy atmosphere.”

My little black book
Sharon ConneelyDonaldson, interior design tutor and creative director at Full Circle Design I have a typical white tiled bathroom that I would like to transform into a spa-like space, but without remodelling it. What do you suggest? An all-white tiled bathroom can look quite austere so it is important to soften it with natural materials and by introducing nature’s colours. These can include any of the following combinations: creams and browns; aqua and coral; midnight blue and copper; mocha brown and turquoise. As you don’t want to remodel, accessories such as mats, mirrors, shelves, small trolleys, storage, towels, art and accessories can help bring your home spa to life. Consider incorporating natural and luxurious materials such as bamboo, teak, copper, bronze, brass, shells and plants. I’ve just bought a treadmill and I don’t know where to put it. Is there somewhere it can fit in my villa without having to turn a room into a gym? If you have space in your master bedroom or guest bedroom, you can put it there. It’s best to create a dedicated zone within the bedroom by adding some sort of visual boundary, such as a decorative screen divider, or a tall, wide open freestanding bookshelf with objets d’art so you can squeeze a workout in without ruining the design aesthetic of your home.

My apartment is currently very neutrally furnished. How can I add some drama? Accessorise! To begin with, look at the smaller items in your apartment that you can liven up with bold, contrasting colours and patterns – the bigger the pattern, the bolder the statement. Top lighting tip
Primarily sleek and straight-lined. To this, I add shapes and modules. I’ll play with different fabrics, stone, wood, metal and other elements. Lastly, I’ll add odd pieces for a vintage and eclectic feel.
Wallpaper or paint?
I love paints – they feel real and traditional. Solid colours are best achieved by paint. However, wallpapers easily enhance every space with their versatility – there are amazing options available to transform the mood in any room.
Colour combo to try
First, choose your favourite base colour, while taking into conisderation the mood of the room. From there, build your combinations. I love monochrome, with colour enhancements as accents.
Splurge on…

I love things that simplify my life. This includes well designed storage, good lighting and easy accessibility. Your home must be easy to live and entertain in.

Around the world
Interior designer Omar Nakkash on evolving design directions, his globetrotting ways and keeping it simple Interview: Lucy Land
B
And what are you most proud of so far? Parlour Boutique – a French bistro and bakery that we have just handed over in One Central, Dubai World Trade Centre. The client put all his trust in me and allowed Nakkash Design Studio to make all the decisions regarding the space.
orn and raised in the UAE, Omar Nakkash’s passion for art was ignited by his interior architect father Wajih Nakkash and his childhood travels. We catch up with the international designer... Where do you live and why? I live in Jumeirah Living World Trade Centre, at the heart of the commercial centre of Dubai, near DIFC. I enjoy its prestigious inner city address and discerning style, which fits in with the surrounding area. It’s also a sevenminute commute to my office in Dubai Design District (d3), which is fantastic. You’ve previously mentioned that you found inspiration from books and magazines that your father placed by your bedside as a child – which book stands out? Learning to See: Bringing the World Around You Into Your Home by Vicente Wolf – I love his signature simple yet eminently comfortable style. How much have your international education and travels influenced your design direction? Having studied in the US and Italy, I’ve been exposed to two different design approaches: the first design school emphasising functionality and practicality and the second is very theoretical and concept driven. My travels always inspire and educate me, which ensures my design direction is always evolving.
How would you describe your design philosophy? Elegant and functional. I always want to have a wow factor in all my projects. What are your top three priorities when working on residential projects? In residential design, those priorities should come from the client. However, from an interior design point of view, I always try to integrate as much natural light as possible, make the circulation of the space seamless, and to keep all five senses in mind.
28 | bhomes.com
What are you working on now? A piece that I will be exhibiting during Dubai Design Week under the Design Ras Al Khor (DRAK) initiative as well as an outdoor installation called The Docks, inspired by sailing clubs, that will also be presented during Dubai Design Week in November. How adventurous are Dubai residents when it comes to interior design? The interior design industry has evolved over the years and people’s taste has shifted from neoclassical designs to more eclectic and unique combinations. Nowadays, blending the inherited treasures with the collected souvenirs of globetrotting travellers has become more apparent in the design world. When asked to create spaces, our clients seek modern rooms with a traditional twist that tell their personal story and reflect their personality. What’s your top décor tip? Narrow down your design direction to one particular style and keep it simple. What piece of furniture could you not live without? As a bookworm, it would definitely have to be my library. What’s on your bedside? The same things I grew up with – numerous books and design magazines. nakkashgallery.com

Heart of tHe Home
Author Annabel Kantaria’s sleek, hi-tech kitchen is the epicentre of her home Words: Lucy Land

Better Homes Magazine | ideas
A
long-term resident of Dubai, British journalist and award-winning author Annabel Kantaria loves to cook when she’s not drafting her latest manuscript. We pull up a breakfast bar stool in her gleaming kitchen to chat about the most lived-in space in her home… Where do you live and why? My husband and I have lived in Dubai for nearly 20 years. When we were looking to buy a villa 13 years ago, Arabian Ranches 1 was under construction. We considered other areas but ultimately chose the Ranches because we liked the layout, space and build quality of the Saheel houses. What was your kitchen like when you first moved in? Although it’s a big, bright space with a family room attached, neither of us liked the way it was previously. The space had been used inefficiently and I wasn’t a fan of the cherry wood finish on the units. I had them all sprayed white while I thought about what I’d do to turn the kitchen into my ideal space. I believe you should live with something for a bit before you start changing it so you know exactly what works and what you need to add or take out. Take us through your remodelled kitchen… I spoke to a few different kitchen companies and I spent a lot of time in various showrooms, looking at the quality and finish of the units, and discussing layouts with designers, but it was Hacker Kitchens that impressed me the most. I was looking for a designer who understood my vision as well as high quality and longevity in terms of materials. The team held my hand throughout the entire design process and then worked with me to fit my budget. I briefed Hacker’s senior designer – I wanted a contemporary, user-friendly kitchen – and then we had several more meetings to fine-tune the layout. He was very patient as I debated various options, including a madcap idea I had at one point that I wanted a walk-in larder. As for appliances, I was open-minded about brands. Hacker Kitchens works with Miele, but was happy to leave gaps for the appliances and let me shop around for other brands if I preferred. In the end, I went with Miele. What do you love most about your kitchen? Every single time I walk into it, I love it – the light, the space and the soft colour I picked for the countertops. I also love how ergonomic it is, how intuitive and efficient the Miele appliances are to use, and the way the cupboards and drawers have a silent self-close mechanism rather than the bangs we used to get with the original kitchen. I also love the halogen lights we had fitted around the cupboard skirting – they look lovely in the evening.
ANNAbEl’S TOp 5 kITchEN ESSENTIAlS Miele induction hob: Since getting this I can’t believe how much time I used to waste waiting for my ceramic hob to heat things up. I had to buy new pans, but it was worth it. therMoMix: Owning a ‘Thermi’ is like having a sous chef to help you out while you do more important things in the kitchen. deep drawers: I’d choose drawers over cupboards any day: it’s so much easier to find things and you can use every inch of space in them. No more things lurking somewhere at the back of cabinets. a very powerful extractor hood: I don’t like the smell of cooking to linger in the house, so this is really important. soft-close MechanisMs: It is so lovely to have doors and drawers that don’t bang, no matter how hard you slam them. Especially with children around.
What’s in your fridge? A lot – it’s two metres tall. Every day, you’ll find yoghurt, milk and various cheeses; lots of vegetables; grapes and apples; pesto; hummus; a jug of homemade lemonade; and various homemade snacks for the children.
bhomes.com | 31
Tell us why it’s the heart of your home… The kitchen has an island with space for five adults to sit, so it has become quite a gathering place. We usually eat there, and the children often sit there with a snack and talk to me while I’m cooking. Likewise, when we have people over, they end up sitting at the island with their drinks while I put finishing touches on the dinner. Sometimes I work there, too – if I need a change of scene from my office, I sit at the island with my laptop. It’s the most-used room in the house – that’s why it was so important for me to get it right. Who does most of the cooking? I probably spend two hours a day cooking, starting at 6.15am when I make eggs and pancakes for the family. I try to give the kids home-cooked food as much as possible so they usually go to school with homemade snacks and lunches (no doubt wishing they had Oreos); and I cook dinner almost
32 | bhomes.com
every evening. As I’m vegetarian and the rest of the family is not, that usually means making two dishes. But I freeze left-overs for future use so I’ve built up a bank of home-cooked ‘ready meals’ that I can pull out on really busy days. What kitchen gadgets do you have? There’s a drawer in my kitchen I call the Drawer of Broken Dreams – you know the one: it’s where you hide the gadgets you’ve bought, used a few times, then never use again. I’m sorry to say the latest addition to that drawer is my Nutribullet. I just like chewing food too much! I jumped on the air-fryer bandwagon when they first came out, and I still use my Tefal Actifry a few times a week. It’s really good for cooking things like homemade fishcakes, samosas and chicken goujons. But the one thing I’ve bought that I use multiple times a day is a Thermomix. I use it to make things like pesto, hummous, choc-hazelnut spread, pasta

ThE DESIgNEr kyle richardson, senior designer at hacker kitchens What was the starting point for this kitchen project? Annabel loves pale colours and finds them very peaceful. her house is mostly white and her previous kitchen was white with black granite tops. She felt the monochrome was looking dated, so wanted a more modern look. While the kitchen had to look amazing, everything had to work efficiently, too, as she spends a lot of time cooking. We moved a few things around in order to make the flow of the kitchen work better, which was no small job, but the layout of the kitchen now makes so much more sense and is functional as well as beautiful. How did the space influence the design direction? The kitchen benefits from lots of natural light, which was great when it came to choosing soothing neutral colours – they look fantastic. We also installed plinth lights, adding ambience and a decorative effect. How did you achieve a sleek look? Overall the kitchen is light, warm and inviting, with muted cashmere tones, creating a calm and stylish living area. polar White high gloss cabinets with integrated satin steel handles lend a luxe look and contrast with the cool grey quartz worktop and interior drawers in lava grey. The worktop was extended into the splash back, giving continuity and also great durability.
sauces, fresh lemonade, bread dough, puddings and soups as well as main dishes like shepherd’s pie, butter chicken, risotto and moussaka. I never made bread before I got it, but the Thermomix mixes and kneads the dough so all I have to do is pop it into my fancy oven to prove and then bake. What do you have in your home kitchen that most people don’t? Miele’s 90cm oven was a big investment, but delivers incredible results. It has 100 automated programmes to ensure you get whatever you’re cooking absolutely perfect. I also have special applications for things like proving dough and drying fruit; and a steam function to keep roasts succulent. I feel a bit like a scientist rather than a cook, when I’m programming it. Annabel’s latest novel The One That Got Away is out now, annabelkantaria.com
What brands do you recommend? We work closely with Miele and work together to fit the appliances before sending a technician to train the client in how to use them. Annabel chose a Miele fixed extractor over the island, fridge freezer, combi-microwave, oven and an induction hob. What do you love most about this particular kitchen? It’s great to have a kitchen that works so well. In terms of the design features, it has plenty of storage, with cabinets under the island using bespoke plate rods for super-efficient organisation. Wall cabinets, with reduced depth, give more storage while still allowing the island to be circulated easily.

“M
ost of our friends like to be outdoors as much as possible. They’ll bring their own chatais [Indian daybeds/mats] to our garden and we’ll all sit down on a blanket and look at the night’s sky,” reveals interior designer Nondita (Noni) Anand, as she shows me her garden with its built-in seating area, pretty water feature and beautiful tiling. “I have plans for an air conditioned conservatory on the section where the tiling is different so we can use the space all year round,” she continues, indicating the black-andwhite patterned area at the back of the garden. Noni shares her home with her husband, JS, their dog, Chica, and adopted cats, Cane and Candy. The welcoming couple clearly like to entertain, and as their dining table seats a maximum of four, the garden provides the perfect alternative space for get-togethers. The contemporary kitchen is also a popular gathering spot. Originally an L-shape, Noni remodelled it so that it now offers a central breakfast bar area. “The bar offers an easy space for people to help themselves to food placed there. Plus, the area opens up onto the backyard.” The maid’s room was also transformed, first into a spare bedroom before becoming the TV room. The most challenging area was the living room, which has lots of natural light yet is narrow. “I like odd-shaped rooms because they encourage me, as a designer, to think more creatively about how to make them work,” she enthuses. So she did away with a TV, and customised and reupholstered furniture to fit the space, while her mother bought an oversized rocking chair, which has Chica’s bed placed next to it. “Everyone creates a space for themselves in the house,” Noni says. “My mum stays with us for 90 days when she visits. She loves to sit in the rocking chair while crocheting and the dog lies next to her.” The bathrooms were also remodelled. “We included an economical version of a tile mosaic: large tiles that look like mosaics,” she reveals. The ensuite to the master bedroom was reserved for a more premium upgrade, however. Marble, mosaic and glass were used for a luxurious look. What’s more, bar the shower area where water reaches the tiles, the mosaic was inlaid without grout so that the natural tile shines through for a glossy look. Noni’s passion for the natural world is most obvious in the stunning master bedroom – its walls feature a large mural of a countryside scene, including a cherry tree in blossom, painted by Austrian artist Philippe Barrow. Two small windows were sealed from the inside so that they continue to look like glass windows from the outside. A mural of a countryside setting with the sky beyond is framed by the windows, creating the effect of space. Noni also added rustic character to the domed ceiling, by painting it copper. Her home is furnished with her art, which she has been collecting for 18 years, while her own artistic streak is revealed in a colourful painting decorating the largest wall in her living room. She first discovered the piece on the floor of a gallery, leaning against the wall. “The light at the gallery was very different to the light at home, so I didn’t

Like music, colour can really lift your mood notice the blackness in the bottom right-hand corner,” she says. “If you sat long enough and became engrossed in the painting, it would look like someone was drowning.” Ever solution focused, Noni popped down to Al Barsha-based craft store Creative Minds, and bought some colourful paper flowerheads and butterflies to fill in the black area. “The remaining dark patches now look like black poppies,” she says. Indeed, the customised artwork works beautifully and adds a pop of colour to the room’s neutral colour scheme. “In general, I think people should use colour more. Like music, it can really lift your mood.” Noni’s success as an interior designer is perhaps derived as much by her savviness as by her sense of aesthetics. She didn’t cast aside any furniture from

her previous home, choosing instead to customise what she already had for the new space. Indeed, her background is in wealth management, though her passion for design started early in life. Born in India, she moved to Canada with her husband in her early 20s, and friends began asking for her interior design advice after seeing her home. Noni believes her travels and her experience staying in hotels have influenced her sense of design. “Traditionally, India has a colourful palette. Jewellery, artwork and furniture at home is often rich and colourful,” she says. “Simultaneously, you see a more neutral colour palette developing – hotels with sandy, cream and black hues or with luxurious marble and silk – so it’s a great mix.” When she moved to north America, she discovered a variety of resorts, from budget and business hotels to spa retreats. However, her move to Dubai led to her focusing on her lifelong passion: “It was only when we bought this villa two-and-ahalf years ago that I realised that I’ve been doing interior design for so long, but as life takes over – bills have to be paid, for example – you don’t necessarily follow that path.” Noni clearly made the right decision to move into interior design full time. With a number of residential projects under her belt, she is currently busy working on hotel projects, the first of which – D’Zign by Leva – will open in Deira at the end of this year. “I haven’t seen another modern hotel in the UAE that focuses on colour, clean lines, design, art and technology,” she enthuses. “People keep reinventing things here in Dubai, which is part of its beauty.” spacezdesign.com

WALLS COULD TALK Gorgeous wallcovering designs bring character and colour to this London home Words: Lucy Land

“T
his home is very close to my heart,” reveals awardwinning interior designer Niloufar Bakhtiar-Bakhtiari, referring to a four-bedroom apartment in Albert Hall Mansions, a red-brick property overlooking Hyde Park in South Kensington, London. The apartment belongs to a high-profile Italian woman, who chose its location to be closer to her children and grandchildren. “My client is very polite and charming and an absolute pleasure to work with – she likes to keep things simple, is decisive, yet is also very open-minded.” The homeowner was looking for an easy-to-maintain property. Having already seen Niloufar’s work, she chose to meet Niloufar at her home, rather than her office at NBB Design, to glean ideas for her own property. “It was very useful because she would pick out exactly what she liked and didn’t like from my home.” They also visited Design Centre, Chelsea Harbour, where the client fell in love with an ink colour dragonfly print wallpaper designed by Palmetto Demoiselle for Harlequin, which was then used in the boys’ bedroom. Indeed, the walls became the starting point throughout the project. Niloufar’s biggest challenge was using stucco – a classic way of treating walls that requires a lot of skill – at her client’s request. “I booked in a specialist, who used thin brush strokes so that the walls would look as smooth as possible,” she reveals. The master bedroom provided another challenge: it has a feature wall, which couldn’t be removed because it contained essential plumbing pipes. Embracing the challenge, a stunning bespoke design from de Gournay was commissioned to give the wall a wow factor. The bed was positioned against it, provinding a prime view towards the large windows that afford stunning views across London. The wall also functions as a divider, with the area behind the bed offering a dressing area. The back wall contains built-in wardrobes that are camouflaged by fabric, while a console table and chair add cosiness. “I normally choose large bedside tables with a few drawers to store things you use in the evening, such as books and night creams, but the walkway created by the feature wall reduced the space.” The solution? Hanging lights were used instead of bedside table lamps to free up precious space. With a partially concealed TV in the bedroom, the resulting space is free of clutter. “The effect is very calming. It’s simply a space to sleep.”

It was the first time a client has asked me to go crazy with a space
Hanging lights were also used above the Saarinen table in the dining area, with two circular lights on the back wall. Together, they form a frame for the iconic piece of furniture. In the soft white living room, featuring cashmere curtains, a pop of colour was added, with two bright pink chairs. As no-one would be living in the home full time, Niloufar was able to go all out on the bedrooms without fearing the children would tire of the colours. Whimsical Stars wallpaper from Cole & Son was used in the soothing, pale pink girl’s bedroom. Niloufar continued the pink into the en-suite bathroom by using glass on the pink walls instead of tiles in the shower, while mirrored cabinets under the washbasin further enhanced the space. She also used glass and mirrors in the boys’ en-suite bathroom to continue the flow of colour and make the space appear larger. The walls on one side of the apartment were slanted, however, which affected the window spaces in the bedrooms. “I usually prefer curtains for bedroom windows because they provide a warmer atmosphere than blinds, but curtains would be too heavy for small windows, so I used transparent blinds instead and added warmth with window treatments.” Niloufar is renowned for transforming awkward spaces into stunning places, and her client gave her free reign on the guest washroom. “It was the first time a client has asked me to go crazy with a space. Initially I gave her three options, but she reiterated that she wanted a complete surprise.” Working with artist Bruno Romette, who translated her vision of raining gold by painting lozenge-like teardrops in gold leaf directly onto the walls, Niloufar created a glamourous look, while the striking gold basin from The Water Monopoly gives the finishing touch to the narrow room. Just like the rest of the apartment, it’s a bold, fun and elegant look that doesn’t overwhelm the space. nbbdesign.com

HomE comfortS my interior design rule is… Treat every room as a living space. Corridors, for example, are often overlooked yet we use them constantly to move from one room to another. my top décor tip is… Spend money on things you can’t change easily, such as wallpaper, floors and curtains, as well as bathrooms and kitchens. Another top tip is… Use dimmer light switches in bathrooms, so you don’t have to suffer glaring light early in the morning or late at night. I don’t like… Classic, white ceramic bathrooms – I prefer to use glass, colour and metal in them. bhomes.com | 45

the Meadows Pravin Dmello, Residential Sales and Leasing Consultant at Better Homes, on living in a popular, verdant community
Located close to Sheikh Zayed Road as well as Dubai Marina, Jumeirah Lake Towers, Jumeirah Islands and Jumeirah Park, The Meadows is one of real estate development company Emaar’s fully established communities. Hugely popular with families and young professionals, it is set in a beautifully mature and tranquil landscape with tree-lined streets and is home to more than 1,800 villas in 20 different architectural styles. The gated community comprises several clusters of three- to six-bedroom properties set in distinct precincts, each with a dedicated entry point. The modern, well-designed, twostorey villas offer 3,400 sq. ft. to 6,500 sq. ft. of spacious living, including a typically American style kitchen, with a breakfast bar opening out onto a dining area, a parking garage and an easy-to-maintain, good-sized private garden. Many homes also have their own swimming pool. With its winning combination of lakes, green spaces, jogging paths, walkways, sports and leisure facilities, including riding trails with links to the golf resort, residents can enjoy fantastic facilities and an easy lifestyle. Within Meadows Town Centre, there are supermarkets, coffee shops, boutiques
and retail outlets, including Spinneys, Costa Coffee, Niloo’s Persian restaurant, a music shop, Hallmark Cards and a dry cleaners. The centre also boasts community swimming pools and leisure clubs offering basketball, tennis and other sports. What’s more, The Meadows is the only freehold residential community in Dubai that has its own fuel station and offers a complete, self-contained community with schools, a mosque and plenty of other amenities. The selection of schools in and around The Meadows is excellent, and includes Meadows International School and Dubai British School, both of which offer a very high level of education from KG1 to Grade 3 (ages three to 18). In particular, Dubai British School, a member of the Taaleem Group, is highly sought-after. The area is well connected with public transport, including an RTA bus (F31) service, which runs from the community to Dubai Internet City Metro Station, while taxis are also easily available. Golfers can head to nearby The Montgomerie Golf Course Dubai and Emirates Golf Club, while there is plenty more retail and entertainment choice at nearby Mall of the Emirates.

At Bradenton Prep Academy (BPA), lessons take place in a secluded, garden-like campus that provides a quiet, mini-university feel. With easy access and lots of shaded parking, there’s a welcoming and caring atmosphere from the moment you arrive, with parents praising the care and attention that their children consistently receive. We offer the American Education Reaches Out (AERO) international American curriculum and Advance Placement classes throughout the high school, which is supported by the best teaching practices by trained American and internationally-certified, experienced teachers. The school is currently accredited through the American National Council for Private School Accreditation (NCPSA) and Accreditation International (AI), as well as a candidate school for New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC), now a compulsory standard for American curriculum schools in Dubai.

More than 85% of the education faculty and administration is made
up of experienced Americancertified teachers with both a US and international teaching background. More than 70% hold Master’s degrees in teaching from American universities and colleges. We focus on a holistic approach to learning, achievement and international citizenship. Academic scores are just one part of the wellrounded education programme offered.
Is there anything else parents should know about? I believe parents like to hear from other parents so, with that in mind, it’s over to them: “We stay year after year because we are part of a strong community we cannot find at other schools. My kids are more than just a number here and our voices are always heard and respected,” says Annie Krug, parent of students in grades 1, 2 and 5. “We enjoy the small school feel of BPA. It feels like we are family; a very open community,” adds Tamara Sonne, parent of a grade 3 student.
What do your key facilities include?
The spacious classrooms are supported by a full-sized auditorium, science and computer laboratories, library and a canteen. Our sports amenities include a gymnasium, two swimming pools (a 25-metre pool and a smaller pool for younger students), plus multi-purpose, covered courts.

Nida O’Brien, principal of Raffles Nurseries, on encouraging active, independent learners What sets your nursery apart from others in the city?
Raffles Nurseries are situated in a number of easily accessible locations and are well established in Emaar communities. Our premises have been thoughtfully planned to ensure that the classrooms are not only safe and secure, but also provide a child-centred, nurturing learning environment. We offer both Early Years and Montessori programmes at specific locations, which allows parents a choice of curriculum that they feel will be best suited to their child. Both programmes aim to produce confident, independent and active learners. Emirates Hills Nursery, for example, offers the Montessori programme, with facilities that include a purpose-built outdoor area and indoor activity area.

regularly assessed on their abilities and knowledge to ensure high standards are maintained.
Is there anything else parents should know about?
Both the Early Years and Montessori programmes provide children with experiences that are practical and hands-on. The children are presented with activities and experiences that are suitable to their own needs and stage of development and that take into account personal interests. Children have free access to the resources that are available and can make their own decisions about what they want to do. They can work individually, in small or in large groups. This encourages them to be confident, independent and in charge of their own learning.
