WELCOME TO THE SEPTEMBER ISSUE
L
iving in multicultural Dubai makes it easy to discover inspiration from different periods of time and a variety of places. Our homes reflect the personal journeys that have brought us here and to help us achieve a travel-inspired aesthetic, we speak to self-proclaimed nomad and co-founder of home furniture and décor company White Moss, Leanne Moss (page 22). We also look back to the ’70s (page 29), an era marked by self-expression and contradictions: austerity and decadence; a back-to-nature ethos and high-tech futurism; drab earthy tones and bright colours. Meanwhile, world-famous designer Barbara Barry (page 34) reveals how her designs provide an antidote to our current chaotic times. Interior and landscape designer Sejal Nagjee provides a tour of the single largest home in Jumeirah Islands – its interiors reflect the owner’s travels and artistic leanings. In Paris, however, an apartment with direct views of the Eiffel Tower is influenced by the iconic monument’s geometric, modern-classic and monochrome aesthetic.

“I believe that the better you understand the past, the more you can evolve as a designer,” reveals award-winning interior designer Thomas Pheasant. “I have developed my own point of view over the years, yet what catches my eye is ever changing. With every visit to The National Gallery of Art in Washington DC, for example, I always manage to discover something interesting that I hadn’t focused on before. And my Instagram feed is a very intimate expression of how I see the world around me.”

It will pit Dubai’s best nappers against one another to see who can enjoy the longest sleep right in the middle of the interiors exhibition (indexexhibition.com) floor. COLOUR ME GOOD
1
“Complementary colour schemes are often used in interiors, where typically one colour acts as the dominant shade and the other as an accent,” explains Renae Hewitt, director of design at Mas Paints. She shares her top tips on colour matching…
Spatial awareness Brighter rooms look bigger and more inviting, while dark colours tend to absorb light and make a room look smaller, so select soft tones of white and pale colours if your rooms are smaller.
2
Personal style Your home is a sanctuary so you need to select a colour palette that suits you. Choose a range that makes you feel comfortable and is attractive to you. Note that colour temperature plays
an important role: a more vibrant hue can add liveliness and intimacy to a space, whereas cool shades can be used to calm down a room and create a relaxed feel.
3
Getting started A mood board can help you narrow down your basic colour scheme. It is best used when you want to draw attention to a particular design element, such as furniture, paint, flooring or artworks. It allows you to collect your thoughts.
4
Test colours on the wall By painting a section of the wall at eye level, you can see the real colour when it has dried at different times of the day. You can paint over these test spots, even if the hues are dark shades and you need to use a primer. bhomes.com | 19

“Our homes should reflect the journeys we take and our personal space deserves designs with a soul, a story and a purpose,” enthuses Leanne Moss, co-founder of White Moss. “A scaled-back and insanely stylish version of a free-spirited and travel-inspired aesthetic, modern tribal incorporates hand-crafted items within soft-muted and neutral colour schemes – it’s the perfect choice for communicating a narrative. “Start with a white or neutral canvas before layering with natural materials, such as wood, leather, rattan, feathers and shells. Combine statement lighting, seating, rugs and tribalinfluenced wall hangings and artefacts. Add texture with natural linens, cushions, throws and fabrics with graphic patterns.”

“For most homes, the staircase offers the only space boasting double-height walls, which provides the perfect opportunity to use larger scale patterns. As the welcome focal point of your home that links different areas, it is also a great space to go bold and express your personality,” says Peter Gomez, head designer at Zoffany Studio. “Consider the style of your property and the overall look you want to achieve. Once you have chosen your favourite wallpaper, pick out colours in the paper to select accessories and accent pieces. For added impact, paint the bannister. Lighting will be dictated by the amount of natural light that streams into the area and the mood you want to create. There is also a current trend for using the staircase as an art gallery, which is another wonderful way to bring this space to life.”

MY LITTLE BLACK BOOK FOR RUGS: For traditional kilims and oriental rugs, Sharjah’s Blue Souk is the place to head to. If you are looking for something more neutral, THE One (theone.com) and IDdesign (iddesignuae.com) have a good collection. Dalia Rafeh, senior interior designer at In Design interior design agency I would like my home to reflect my travels in Asia, but without it looking like an Asian restaurant. What advice can you give me? Your home will never look like a restaurant or hotel if it reflects your personality and tells your story. Firstly, you need to decide whether you want a complete Asian feel or just a few elements here and there. Bear in mind that the most significant aspect about Asian interiors is the flow of energy, balance and harmony, which are created by introducing the five elements: water, fire, wood, earth and metal. Introducing water elements could be as simple as an indoor water feature or as elaborate as a fountain or a fish tank. Fire elements can be created with a red wall or by using red fabric and other decorative elements, such as red jars or by simply adding candles with scents of the East. Choose wooden furniture, like tables from Indonesia or wooden doors from India. The earth element can come from stones, ceramics and terracotta. Metal elements, such as Buddhist bells and Tibetan bongs will add a touch of the sound of the temples’ early morning prayers. In whatever direction you wish to go, and no matter how big or small your space, creating an Asian feel is about creating a sense of flow, with elements of nature.
I want my floors to have a warm feel without using high-maintenance wood – what do you suggest? Wooden floors are loved by all and feared by many because of the belief that they require regular maintenance and are highly sensitive to dents, scratches, and are prone to swelling and expanding in the humidity. Fortunately, you can have the same look and feel of solid wood by using engineered hardwood flooring – it’s cheaper than solid wood, yet you can’t tell the difference and it is very durable in our extreme weather conditions. It is constructed with layers of wood and a highly stable core built from five to seven layers of plywood that crisscross in different directions, allowing you to enjoy its natural beauty almost anywhere – even in basements. I have a double-height entrance and would like some inspiration for the wall and lighting – can you help? The beauty of a double-height ceiling is that it’s an empty space without any function but to allow the space to breathe. Either don’t touch the double volume walls so you can appreciate that space or, if the space allows, a wall finish, such as wood, stone or concrete that connects with the overall space is an option. Hanging carpets or large artworks are also interesting elements. Illuminating a double volume can be tricky. Choose suspended lighting if it can be seen from a distance, so it looks like a floating sculpture. Meanwhile, spotlights and indirect lighting are a better option for tight spaces.
FOR HOME SCENTS: I love essential oils that make your house feel like a spa, and oil burners are one small and inexpensive luxury item. Scents like eucalyptus, tea tree, lavender, sandalwood, bergamot and chamomile are very relaxing and have healing benefits.
FOR STATEMENT PIECES: These are best found when travelling on holiday. You are in a different state of mind when you are away from home and familiarity; you are more open to being daring, adventurous and curious. Get lost in small streets and discover an art gallery or an antique shop – it’s not necessarily the piece itself that’s a statement but the journey of finding it somewhere so far from home and the story that comes with it.
DREAM BUY: I have always loved the bubble chair designed by Eero Aarnio in 1968 in Finland (pictured below) – it’s playful, like a swing.

BEING BARBARA Internationally renowned designer Barbara Barry discusses creating calmness and living with less Interview: Lucy Land
B
ased in southern California and inspired by the natural world, interiors and product designer Barbara Barry has been creating beautiful, livable interiors for more than three decades. She firmly believes that home furnishings should evoke serenity as an antidote to our chaotic, modern lives... What is your design ethos? I believe everything we see affects us and therefore matters. Accordingly, when I am designing, I am aware of making many choices in colours and textures to create a calm and harmonious effect because of how these choices affect us positively – or negatively. You have previously described design as connection. What connections are you most proud of making? I see all design as a way of connecting… To people, to places, to materiality and to each other. I am proud of the relationships that I have with my many licensee partners and that extends, from the people in the factories who work so hard to achieve new designs to the end consumers who purchase something they love, whether it is a chair, a lamp, bedding, lighting or even plumbing. What inspired your new collection for Baker? My own, as well as my clients’, evolving lifestyles, which is living in a more relaxed way. I wanted to explore timeless, elemental forms that evoke a certain elegance and a warmth, while being easy and modern. This was achieved with lower, less formal seating, relaxed and open-grained woods, and natural and textural textiles. With such a wide portfolio of work, how do you choose your projects? I am fortunate to have a lot going on in many different arenas, which keeps it all stimulating and fun. I generally work from one product to another product design and only take on interior design projects if time allows and the work presents a new challenge.
Take us through a typical working day… Each day is different and I thrive on that. I generally like a peaceful morning when I can daydream before I focus. Then I get to the business side of things, using the second half of the day for drawing and conceptualising. I don’t work late.
34 | bhomes.com
I find that if I am not caught up in the design process, I put it down and start again refreshed the following day. Most project/product development is a year, if not two, so the pace is lovely, circular and fluid. Your Instagram feed focuses on beautiful compositions – what inspires it? Images, with a little design message in them. How do your travels influence your work? Being thrown into a new context is always stimulating. It might be the shape of a wooden spoon in a coffee shop in Sweden or the colour of a boiled wool vest in Austria that will spark a new idea. However, my daily surroundings influence me, too. I am constantly inspired by the light and the patterns that I see in nature outside my windows at home. I am even influenced by the colour of milk swirling in my coffee each morning. I find that if I stay still long enough, I can find something close at hand that is inspirational. What’s on your bedside table? My current read (Undaunted Courage: Meriwether Lewis, Thomas Jefferson, and the opening of the American West by Stephen Ambrose) on a small leather tray I designed for Global Views, and a small oil painting. What is your top home décor tip? Learn to live with less; there is something spiritual about an empty space. And always choose quality over quantity. What does home mean to you? Home means everything to me, as I realise more and more how much quiet and alone time I need. Our homes are where we can really live out who we are. I am also a neatnik – I like to clean and arrange my daily surroundings artfully. Arranging a morning tray of coffee to head outside and watch the morning light unfold, for example, gives me enormous pleasure. My home is a place to escape from the hectic world, to restore myself and to feel inspired. What’s next? My life is an adventure, so I am never sure what is next. “I
’ve been very lucky to work with the homeowner on this project,” says interior and landscape designer Sejal Nagjee. She is referring to the largest single property in Jumeirah Islands, encompassing a plot area of 21,279 sq. ft. With an interior area of 13,076 sq. ft., the space offered plenty of design potential. Formerly owned by a Saudi couple, Sejal worked with the new owners to transform its interior, from a classic look to a modern and minimalistic style, with an amazing garden to complement it. While most renovations include opening up spaces for a more contemporary look, the work on this villa involved quite the contrary. “Previously, as you entered the home, your vision would be unfocussed,” explains Sejal. “Our aim was to create
a strong first impression, add warmth and to bring the outside in.” This meant closing up space to create a distinctive entrance, while the bamboo close to the front door was complemented with an elegant bamboo design wallpaper by Cole & Son inside the entrance. Beyond the hallway, with its geometric design flooring, awaits the huge open-plan dining and living space, featuring beautiful porcelain flooring, wood walls and double-height ceilings. “Porcelain is warmer than marble, and with its matte, concrete finish, these large slabs really make the place come alive,” Sejal says. Some of the walls, meanwhile, combine solid wood with parquet. It’s intricacy required expert work by hand, creating soft-touch drawers in the bar area, for example, and seamless doors, with hidden rails, for the entrance to the TV room.

Their fluid shapes are contrasted with jigsaw-shaped, and mosaic tables in another seating area. There, a bespoke stunning interlaced suspension chandelier by Lasvit hangs above the geometric furniture. “At night, it looks like it’s floating in the air from outside,” Sejal says. Walls, meanwhile, are adorned with modern artworks, and the window spaces have been maximised with seating. To the right of the entrance, the dining area also wows. “It’s my favourite space,” reveals Sejal. Indeed, every bathroom and washroom has a unique look. “A bathroom is a very personal space,” Sejal reveals. “And each one has been designed with a purpose.” Both the homeowner and Sejal are very detail-oriented. A wardrobe, for example, took over a month to design because everything, including the shoes and gowns,
were measured. What’s more, the exterior complements the interior. Sejal increased the height of the swimming pool, for example, to enhance the view, while the chairs in the study match its shade of blue. “The homeowner is very artistic and I helped to translate her imagination into her home interior,” Sejal enthuses. “We were waltzing together for two-and-a-half years.”

Inspired by its view of the Eiffel Tower, this gorgeous Parisian apartment has a certain je ne sais quoi Words: Lucy Land
O
verlooking the north bank of the River Seine in the quiet 16th arrondissement of Paris, this three-bedroom apartment boasts direct views of the Eiffel Tower. Unsurprisingly, the iconic Parisian monument provided the starting point for the property’s interior design direction, resulting in a black and white, calm and modern-classic aesthetic. “I really enjoyed contrasting simple geometric forms and monochromatic colours with the classical character of the building,” reveals Michele Rhoda, director of design studio ARRCC. Situated on the fourth floor of an old building, its existing narrow passageways and high ceilings presented their own challenges. Consequently, Michelle transformed the layout, making it more open plan, in order to allow more natural light into spaces between the entertainment areas and create better flow. The kitchen, for example, was previously in a separate room without a view. Structural columns and private entrances to bathrooms and bedrooms were concealed within adjoining feature bhomes.com | 49

wall cladding, while ceilings were kept as high as possible to contrast against the narrow passageways. “We accentuated the high ceilings to capture the views and draw light into the space,” Michele explains. “And the new layout made the existing apartment more contemporary, creating a sense of grandeur and openness within the old building,” she adds. Entertainment areas were orientated to face views of beautiful old buildings and the courtyard, or the Seine and the Eiffel Tower. The result is a clean, calm and memorable modern space, in which the spectacular Parisian setting takes centre stage, and clever refinements to the existing architecture provide oodles of charm and character. Each room has its own customdesigned feature ceiling, adapted from a classic Parisian pressed ceiling pattern, or a pendant as its focal point, while concealed lighting adds a layer of warmth to the uncluttered space. In the breakfast area, timber wall panelling and the feature ceiling stretches from the kitchen to the salon, creating a seamless space. The timber adds a layer of warmth to the light interior palette,

WE ACCENTUATED THE HIGH CEILINGS TO CAPTURE THE VIEWS while pieces of mirror set into the wall panelling frame different perspectives of the apartment. Various elements in the kitchen celebrate the setting, resulting in a clean space that carefully balances old with new. “The diamond pattern on the original stained glass windows, repeated in the ceiling design, seems to reflect the structure of the Eiffel Tower,” Michelle reveals. Meanwhile, custom radiator covers – set within the architectural lines of the existing frame – are patterned to reflect the new herringbone floor. The windows overlook a quintessential Parisian courtyard, lending a stunning contrast to the modern kitchen design. “The main living area encapsulates the magic that makes this apartment so exceptional,” enthuses Michelle. Larger than life, the Eiffel Tower is perfectly reflected in floor-to-ceiling smoky mirrors that cloak the wall behind the sofa. This both enlarges the space and serves to make reflections of the tower
visible from other areas in the apartment. On the opposite side of the living room, the original fireplace was restored, with mirror cladding added around it to create an illusion of space. The walls are made up of white panelling, crisply aligned to complement the existing doorframes, while abstract paintings by contemporary South African artist Andrzej Urbanski add a playful inset to the panelled walls on either side of the fireplace. The bookshelf was custom-made to fit behind the sofa as an extension of the wall panelling that starts in the kitchen and wraps along the inside wall of the living room. Because of the high ceilings in the apartment, a book-ladder was added, creating a library feel, while an internal clerestory window at the top of the book shelving allows natural light into the adjacent master en-suite. The master bedroom, accessed through the concealed door in the lounge wall panelling, features a ceiling rose made up of the same distinctive pattern

found in the open-plan living areas. Held within an oval-shaped recess, the rose complements the softer lines of the bedroom, while high ceilings and windows ensure a feeling of spaciousness in the narrow room. Smart black sanitary-ware and a black and white palette lend an air of drama to the master en-suite bathroom, which is softened with touches of bronze. The vanity was inspired by the forms of the Eiffel Tower – its broad arches reflected in the design of a framed antique mirror. Vital storage space is provided below the basins and cleverly concealed behind the mirror. Featuring a bespoke-designed basin, the black colour palette of the master en-suite bathroom is brought through to the second bathroom, but is combined with grey marble for a warmer feel, while the guest bathroom interiors were kept fresh, white and light, with the copper basin and taps adding a dash of colour. “I love the contrasts at play in this apartment,” Michelle says. “Old and new; dark and light; ornate and uncluttered – it all works perfectly together.” arrcc.com
HOME COMFORTS My top design tip is… Allow as much natural light and views into the interior as possible. My style no-no is… Buying everything from the same store. I love interiors that look as if they took years to curate. Home is… My creative sanctuary – a space to be calm, relaxed, but also inspiring. It should have an element of fun, too.

DOWNTOWN DUBAI Tauseef Khan, real estate broker at Betterhomes, on enjoying a luxurious lifestyle in the centre of Dubai
Want to live next to some of the most iconic monuments on earth, such as the world’s tallest building (Burj Khalifa), the world’s largest fountain (The Dubai Fountain) and the world’s largest shopping mall (The Dubai Mall)? Perhaps more importantly, Downtown Dubai offers a unique residential area, with a mix of modern high-rise towers boasting traditional Arabic influences and low-rise residential communities, like The Old Town Island and The Old Town, while Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Boulevard is beloved by locals as much for its palm trees, which offer shade during the day and are beautifully illuminated with thousands of lights at night, as for its top-notch restaurants. Downtown Dubai’s residential properties have a high finish and are conveniently located in the centre of Dubai, which connects to most of the highways, such as Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Khail Road. Burj Khalifa/ Dubai Mall Station offers a metro within a five-minute radius and plenty of taxis are available throughout the area. Its nearby educational institutions include GEMS Wellington
Primary School in Al Wasl, and Hartland International School and North London Collegiate School, both in Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum City. Properties start from 480 sq. ft. to 600 sq. ft. studios and 750 sq. ft. to 880 sq. ft. one-bedroom and 1,350 sq. ft. to 1,600 sq. ft. two-bedroom apartments, while the largest penthouses and villas range from 3,800 sq. ft. to 4,500 sq. ft. Apartments (and penthouses) are located on the higher levels of the high-rise towers, with villas located below the third and fourth levels. In The Old Town, you’ll find villas, apartments and penthouses in low-rise towers, while the villas come with a private garden and Jacuzzi. All the residential towers within Downtown Dubai have their own swimming pool, gym, concierge and 24-hour security. Plus, they all offer a variety of indoor games areas. “Downtown Dubai offers the feel of NYC,” says local resident Tracy Baker, who hails from New York City. Its prestigious location might draw people to the area, but its vibe ensures residents stay.

Marta Kazmi, centre director at Babilou Dubai, on learning through experiences What sets your nursery apart from others in the city?
Blossom by Babilou Early Years Education Group is a winner of numerous awards, including Nursery Provider of the Year and Parent’s Choice Awards. We are recognised as a corporate social responsibility leader that provides children with a strong early years education founded on the Triple P (positive parenting programme) principles of sustainable growth and education. We follow the British EYFS curriculum, while incorporating our own sensory-based Skygarden approach. Our focus on learning through exploration, curiosity, imagination, creativity and, above all, experiences has measured impacts for children.
Tell us about your team...
Babilou Dubai Design District’s qualified team is a happy mix of women from around the world. We believe that all educators should have an early years education degree and relevant experience, and we do not believe in hiring nannies or assistants. Our staff range in expertise, from junior to senior

educators. Many of our staff are part of our ambassador programme for those who are in service with us for more than three years. We work hard to ensure that our staff are well provided for, and consequently offer exceptional service and care to our children.
Is there anything else parents should know about?
In recent years, researchers have learned that the human brain develops the vast majority of its neurons, and is at its most receptive to learning, between birth and three years of age. Simply put, a child’s early years lay the foundation for all that is to come. To this end, we provide French, Arabic and music classes for children of all ages on a daily basis, and sensory activities that enhance child’s interest for learning throughout the day.
