welcome In whatever field we work, we are continually inspired by our surroundings and in this issue, our interviewees reveal their personal influences. Founders of furniture brand Blanc Mariclò, Mariangela and Claudia Federighi (page 9) grew up in a Tuscan farmhouse and seek to reproduce the Italian sense of hospitality in their designs. Architect and associate partner at interior design practice Design Haus Medy, Zhoreh Dastmaltchi Kroner invites us into her holiday home in Iran, which is furnished with objects carefully picked during her many travels (page 20). Meanwhile, architect Philip Logan’s Al Bandar apartment (page 16) is decorated with his own paintings, which are inspired by living on the water and the quality of light that his duplex penthouse receives. As many of us live in beachfront communities, we give you some seascape-inspired designs (page 7). We also bring you beautiful botanical prints (page 10) to help you get back to nature. And finally, browse our choice of apartments, townhouses and villas for rent and sale on Al Raha Beach (page 25) – waterfront views guaranteed.

Design DNA

Our team of designers travel and study trends in fashion and home interiors to combine contemporary style with our rich Italian heritage and traditions, from ancient paintings, mosaics and frescoes to villas and museums.

Wallpaper or paint?

We prefer paint that is vintage inspired. Paint feels more authentic even if you can find amazing wallpapers that look like real, textured, painted walls.

Splurge on...

A big table that allows everyone to come together to chat over a plate of pasta. As Italians, eating with family and friends is an important part of our lives.

Colour combo to try

A neutral base – white, taupe, ecru – is an easy, calm base that works well with a touch of colour. Green, in all its shades, goes really well with neutrals, perhaps because it reminds us of nature.

Scents to transport you

Inspirations

We are mostly inspired by our home: Italy. We grew up in a Tuscan farmhouse and our aim with our collections is to reproduce our country’s values and atmosphere, such as our sense of hospitality. A warm, inviting Italian home is often represented by an elegant, simple space and good cooking. We are also inspired by Italian art, music, architecture and landscapes.

Top décor tip

Always make your space your own. This means that when decorating, you always need a personal touch – something from the past and something from your own life, so you will feel at home rather than feel like you’re in an anonymous, glossy showroom.

Home scents

We love European jasmine – it’s a bit more sour than jasmine from Asia and the Middle East. We like to mix it with orange and lemon in the summer, while we prefer to combine it with sweeter perfumes during the winter.

Coconut Escape, Dhs72, Heart & Home at LifestyLe

Who are your design heroes?

Painter, sculptor, interior decorator and engraver Piero Fornasetti and architect, interior designer and production designer Renzo Mongiardino. They were unique, innovative and their style was very personal – you can recognise their work at first sight.

A bAlAnced life A sense of order is imperative when it comes to interiors and design, says architect Philip Logan Words: Lucy Land Photographs: Muthu Kumar

I

f you haven't heard of architect Philip Logan, you will certainly know his work. His iconic 33-storey Etisalat Building, located on Sheikh Zayed Road, is easily recognisable – made from concrete, glass and steel, it features a ball-shaped tip that resembles a golf ball. Having worked in the region for more than two decades, Philip has left his indelible mark on a number of other commercial as well as hotel, leisure and educational buildings, including the Dubai campus of Sheikh Zayed University, the award-winning Bawadi Development, on a 2.25 sq km site in Al Ain, and residential and commercial property The Bridge at Dubai Sports City. The former owner of international consultancy Shankland Cox – which he sold to architecture firm Aukett Swanke last year for Dhs16 million – is now chairman of the Middle East operations of Aukeet Swanke Group. “I have business in Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Al Ain so it made sense to be based in Abu Dhabi,” he says, regarding his penthouse residence in Al Bandar. A 45-minute drive to his

16 | bhomes.com

Dubai-based office, the property is also close to Abu Dhabi International Airport, convenient for Philip’s frequent travels. His work has led him to a variety of countries, such as Pakistan where he designed the award-winning United Bank HQ in Karachi. “I hear it will be featured on the Pakistani rupee note,” he says, simply. Philip bought his four-bedroom home four years ago, along with two other investment properties in the area. “The quality of the light drew me to Al Bandar,” he reveals. “I also love the fact that I’m not living beside the sea; I’m living on it, which is a unique experience.” Of the three properties he bought, Philip decided he really wanted to live on the top floor to maximise the views and offer something special for visiting family and friends. Indeed, the bright and breezy duplex penthouse offers stunning views of Yas Island, including Yas Marina Circuit and Yas Viceroy Abu Dhabi, with its LED canopy and a section of the Grand Prix circuit winding through its arch.

“I love island life,” Philip enthuses. “I can enjoy my breakfast on the balcony every morning, there’s a tow path nearby for jogging and I’m looking forward to when the water taxis soon start running.” It’s clear that Philip likes order and symmetry. When he moved in, he had a streamlined kitchen custom-designed with a granite worktop, and personally designed the teak wood TV surround in the open-plan space. “There needs to be a rationale to whatever we look at and we all relate to order,” he says. “You can incorporate the same finishes in a variety of spaces, using luxurious materials such as marble and granite, and if there’s balance to it, then it works. It’s a bit like Feng Shui with its focus on the harmony of opposites – that quiet soul.” Philip cites the United Bank HQ in Karachi as an example: “It’s just triangles

18 | bhomes.com

and sharp corners.” While Philip’s personal style leans towards minimalism with its clean lines, he isn’t averse to curves. His sense of harmony is also revealed in his own paintings, which are inspired by living on the water and the quality of light. “The light is amazing – it bounces off the balcony and the white floors into the openplan living, kitchen and dining area.” Some of his artworks adorn his apartment walls. Philip has also enjoyed living in his other home for the last four years – a Grade II-listed Georgian pile on fourplus acres in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. “Construction on the Irish property started in 1760 and generations later, we’re still fixing it. It’s such a contrast to my contemporary apartment in Abu Dhabi, which has lots of glass,” he says, before conceding: “Although both properties have a sense of order.”

A home from home Architect Zhoreh Dastmaltchi Kroner’s holiday home in Tehran is beautifully furnished with objects hand-picked during her travels Words: Lucy Land

A

rchitect and associate partner at interior design practice Design Haus Medy, Zhoreh Dastmaltchi Kroner, left her birthplace, Iran, when she was a teenager. A few years ago, however, she decided to reconnect to Tehran by investing in an apartment in order to spend time with family and childhood friends, while also once again enjoying being closer to the Alborz mountain range. She chose a two-bedroom apartment in Elahieh, one of the most exclusive areas of northern Tehran, which is home to many politicians, diplomats, expatriates and artists. “The neighbourhood is filled with traditional and historical private properties and gardens.

It’s famous for having the best restaurants and shopping malls in the country and I love its cosy and luxurious atmosphere,” she enthuses. Zhoreh’s intention of keeping the 172-squaremetre apartment as a holiday home had a big impact on its design direction. “Its style had to be timeless but still unique, while simultaneously being functional and easy to maintain,” she explains. Although the project was supervised from her base in Dubai while juggling work commitments, Zhoreh had the luxury of not having a deadline to hand the project over. “I spent a lot of time selecting each piece of furniture during my travels,” she says. She was bhomes.com | 21

sure of the colour theme, style and materials that were to be used, but also left her selection process quite open, based on what she would fall in love with during her business trips and holidays. Her biggest challenge was shipping all of her beloved pieces to Tehran. “It wasn’t an easy job because Iranian customs are very strict with regards to bringing new items into the country,” she reveals. Before starting her interior design work, the kitchen island was removed in order to open up the space further, while the fireplace was centred with some gypsum work. Then, the rich colour scheme and materials were chosen to complement the property’s marble flooring and the walnut accents of the main doors, kitchen and bathrooms. “I also added darker shades to many items to make them look bolder and more distinctive,” she says. As the living, dining and kitchen areas were connected, Zhoreh ensured the design flowed throughout these areas by creating a glamourous, nature-inspired and comfortable atmosphere. She achieved this by combining wood, marble and leather and including the shape of a tree in the

22 | bhomes.com

back bar and dining table area. A touch of green was added to the accessories and even an armchair to reflect nature further, while gold was also used as a signature accent to give a glamourous finish. The bedrooms, however, were given very different makeovers. “The main bedroom was very much based on my personal taste, which is a Hermès-based style,” she says. With its signature blue, yellow and cream shades, the master bedroom’s walls were covered in Hermès wallpaper, while its interior was accessorised with Hermès cushions and accessories, completed with a huge fur carpet for a soft and easy look. Meanwhile, the second bedroom was given a semi-classic style with richer colours and a statement headboard. With its mix of opulent textures, talking point furniture pieces and elegant palette, Zhoreh has created a warm and luxurious home befitting its salubrious neighbourhood. “I love the sense of cosiness as soon as you enter the apartment,” she says, simply. “I’m really looking forward to spending time in it.”

HOME COMfOrts My top décor tip is… Work with a designer to master an individual design based on your needs and taste. My advice for choosing statement pieces is… Consider the most meaningful and precious things in your life. It could be an art piece that reflects your background and nationality or is personal to your family. I can’t live without… Travelling. It is crucial to improving my creativity. Being based in the UAE with Design Haus Medy has helped me to develop an international creative working style – I’m constantly challenged, and working with so many international clients makes every project special. bhomes.com | 23

Move to

Al RAhA BeAch Bruno Grandini, proper ty consultant, on a luxurious community with stunning water front views Al Raha Beach is situated on 5.2 million square metres of natural beachfront. It is conveniently located next to the main highway linking Abu Dhabi and Dubai and a 10-minute drive to Abu Dhabi International Airport. Abu Dhabi’s Yas Island is just across the water, with its theme parks and mega-mall – F1 race track, Ferrari World Abu Dhabi and golf courses, plus, much more to follow. Both Abu Dhabi city centre and Saadiyat Island, the up and coming cultural centre, are only 20 minutes’ drive away. The area is also home to Aldar headquarters. The first circular building of its kind in the Middle East, it was

voted Best Futuristic Design 2008 by the Building Exchange Conference. With the map of the city being redrawn at such a pace, Al Raha Beach is at the heart of the city. Offering a vibrant mix of high quality residential and commercial properties alongside fantastic cultural, entertainment and public amenities, the current completed development is made up of three similar but distinct communities that offer residents a range of different services: Al Bandar, which has the most to offer in terms of nightlife and appeals to singles and couples with its sophisticated, laidback vibe; and Al Muneera and Al Zeina, which have more to offer families. Perhaps best known for its breathtaking sea, luxurious marina and canal views, all three communities overlook Yas Island. Each community has its own facilities, which include swimming pools, gyms and a kids’ play area, while a few communities have their own sports facilities, such as tennis courts. Parents can head to nearby Khalifa City A to enroll their children in one of three renowned schools: Al Raha International School, GEMS American Academy and Al Yasmina School. Al Zeina is real estate development, management and investment company Aldar Properties’ latest mixed-use development. Only minutes from Yas Island, Ferrari World and Saadiyat Island, it is a residential and retail development built over seven precincts with a total of 1,221 properties. It offers

quiet public squares and sheltered pathways among landscaped gardens, creating the sense of being far away from the demands of everyday life. Set among these gardens are the community’s townhouses, spacious oneto four-bedroom apartments, sky villas and beach villas – some with private courtyards and pools – looking out across a 500m-long private sandy beach to Yas Island. Al Bandar is Aldar Properties’ marina development. Built beyond the shores of Al Raha Beach, it is an integrated community comprising of residential towers, a 131-berth marina, an exclusive residents’ clubhouse, a retail building with a Spinneys supermarket and a promenade with cafes and restaurants overlooking the marina. Built over an island and mainland area, Al Muneera has spectacular views over the blue waters of the Arabian Gulf to Yas Island and Ferrari World and is located next to Al Bandar and Al Zeina and just up the coast from Aldar’s headquarters building. The community consists of residential apartment towers, beachside villas, townhouses, retail outlets, restaurants and a commercial office building. It consists of 1,286 apartments available as one-, two-, three- or four-bedroom residences. The community’s unique feature is the canal that splits the Al Muneera Island from the mainland – it offers cafés and restaurants located along waterfront paths and promenades for residents and the general public to enjoy.

Al Forsan Nursery will become part of Aldar Academies’ growing network of leading private schools in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, which excelled recently with outstanding A-Level and IGCSE results. The nursery and its students will benefit from the expert knowledge, best practice, and innovative approaches shared across our seven academies. Parents can therefore expect a teaching programme that inspires a love for learning in their child from the youngest age. Maintaining this passion is the aim across the Aldar Academies network. The nursery will be located within the safe confines of Abu Dhabi’s prestigious Al Forsan International Sports Resort, which includes some amazing facilities, such as an equestrian centre, swimming pools, and sports courts.

Our aim was to replicate the success of our schools that teach FS1 and the higher years, but in the smaller setting of a dedicated nursery. All of our teachers and teaching assistants will hold degrees and qualifications related to the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum to ensure the Aldar Academies standard is upheld.

Is there anything else parents should know?

As our nurseries will allow students to naturally progress to other Aldar Academies schools, we will start to prepare students for their next step with us from their first day. For example, alongside English, Arabic and French languages, we’ll also introduce Chinese. These lessons will take place in a very special environment. The building is designed in a horseshoe shape and stretches across one floor, with all classrooms leading directly out onto the playground.

What do your key facilities include?

We’re equipping the nursery with digital learning aids to build students’ abilities gradually, alongside spaces dedicated to group and individual creative arts, and outdoor play equipment. An on-site medical clinic will be staffed by a fulltime nurse for parents’ peace of mind, and beyond the nursery itself, there’s everything Al Forsan Resort offers. AED 200,000 per year 5 BR 5,000 sq. ft.

Principal of British International School Abu Dhabi, Patrick Horne, on offering wonderful opportunities

What sets your school apart from others in the city?

We pride ourselves on being a welcoming community that provides the highest quality learning opportunities in and beyond the classroom. We host many events throughout the year, including Arabic and English language, and yoga classes for parents. Being part of the Nord Anglia family of 43 schools worldwide has provided so many amazing opportunities for our students, such as the collaboration between Nord Anglia Education and The Juilliard School in New York, and our collaboration with Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

What is your teaching ethos?

We believe there is no limit to what our students can achieve. This approach to teaching is designed to develop skills that every person requires, and not just the ability to remember facts. Our co-educational students learn problem-solving and decision-making skills, and are always encouraged to question the status quo through wellresearched arguments. We support our students to take full advantage of the various activities on offer beyond the classroom, whether it be through outdoor activities, such as wakeboarding, or developing strategic skills through the school chess club.

30 | bhomes.com

Is there anything else parents should know?

Our non-selective school offers the English National Curriculum from the age of three to 16, and the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme for ages 16 to 18. We were rated Band A ‘Very Good’ school in the latest Abu Dhabi Education Council inspection. We are also extremely honoured to be working with UNICEF. We believe that every child can have a positive impact on the world and are focusing on two goals this year: to combat hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture; and to ensure healthy lives and promote wellbeing for all ages.
