The Meadows resident Jennifer Hardie shares how she brought her dream bathrooms to life, with a little help from BAGNODESIGN London
W
ith a love for easy breezy Balinese design, Jennifer Hardie set about renovating the Meadows home she shares with her children from top to bottom, with the bathrooms commanding special attention. “I’m originally from Canada and love the outdoors way of life so I wanted to create a spa-like master bathroom that brought elements of the outside in,” she says. “Plus, I decided to divide the Jack and Jill bathroom my kids shared into two to give each of them their own personal space.” “I did the rounds of different shops and was impressed by the quality and design orientated selection at BAGNODESIGN. I was immediately drawn to the hexagonal stone tile that I chose for my master bathroom.” As Jennifer was weighing up what to team it with, a store assistant stepped in to help mix and match pieces from the BAGNODESIGN London brand and the company’s sister store Aquazone on Umm Suqeim Road, which is a one-stop shop for value-driven bathroom and plumbing solutions, as well as clearance stock. “As a busy working mum, this was a great solution: it meant I could choose where to splurge (on the rain shower) and where to save (great quality Spanish and Italian tiles are very affordable),” says Jennifer. “I’m very happy with the end result, as are my children. They’re relaxing stylish yet functional spaces that will stand the test of time.” Contact: 04 507 6000, @bagnodesignofficial, bagnodesignlondon.com/ae

BEFORE YOU BUY... “A high usage kitchen essential, the first thing you need to ask yourself is what size will suit your family’s needs versus how much space there is in your kitchen,” says Abana Kapadia, merchandise planner & appliances expert, Jashanmal Home. The age-old debate on how brown you like your toast argues the case for one with easy to use, adjustable browning controls. “Remember that, ideally, a toaster is for life, so how long it lasts will depend on product quality, and how often you clean and maintain it. Be sure to check the energy usage before committing to buy – choosing an energy efficient model with features like individual slot control will help save the environment and your energy bills.”

Indigo Living Spring/Summer 2019 Collection
NOT SURE WHERE TO START? Hone in on any jewel colours you may already have in the home, such as a piece of art or an ornament, and use this as your starting point. “For a dramatic look, opt for two jewel tones together,” advises Mei AlHakim,
26 | bhomes.com
interior designer for IDdesign, Chattels & More and KARE. “Simply soften with neutrals if you prefer it to be more subtle, or team with black and white to create a more unique look.” WORK THE PALETTE “Jewel tones also work especially well with an analogue
colour scheme (using three shades next to each other from the colour wheel),” says Kat. “For example, you could try a fabulous dark navy on the walls teamed with teal velvet sofas and green glass accessories, all set off with gold – the shine from the metal will make the colours pop.”

CHOOSE YOUR MATERIALS WISELY “Jewel colours are great teamed with another very on trend material: velvet,” says Kat. “The combination exudes luxury, with the slight shimmer of the velvet enhancing the beauty.” ON A BUDGET? While jewel tones are often seen in swathes, little touches can go a long way. Bringing in some choice textiles, such as throws and cushions can make even the blandest sitting room sing, as can a wash of wall paint.
TIP
“If you’re only looking to use one jewel tone piece, a sofa or armchair is bold enough to become a focal point and will sit comfortably within a neutral scheme,” says Kat. 28 | bhomes.com

FUTUREPROOF YOUR HOME
Be at the cutting edge thanks to these simple and intelligent design trends and solutions by bathroom and kitchen fittings expert Grohe EVERYDAY GRAND DESIGNS The trend for open plan living is giving rise to everyday products as household furnishings in their own right. Indeed, the boundaries between the individual living areas are becoming increasingly blurred, with the kitchen often part of the living room, and the bathroom opening up to the bedroom. As a result, people are paying much more attention to the details, with everything from shower heads to smart controls a showcase for individual style. 3D METAL-PRINTED FAUCETS If you’re a stickler for design details, the chance to create your own tap is sure to inspire your inner designer, and Grohe’s 3D metal-printed faucets make the dream a reality. Using the facility at its Hemer manufacturing site in Germany, the company has produced two striking design debuts, the Grohe Atrio Icon 3D and Grohe Allure Brilliant Icon 3D, which show that the sky’s the limit when it comes to imagination. The company can design taps in small quantities according to the wishes of its customers. EASY MINIMALISM Just when you thought you’d mastered the art of minimalism, ‘new minimalism’ comes along, which takes the quest for simplicity and teams it with intuitive products that are easy to install. It’s best personified in the new GROHE Rapido SmartBox, which keeps a number of different solutions, from your mixers to your thermostat, inside one concealed installation solution. A WATCH ON WATER As we strive to be more eco-friendly, the new generation of Grohe Sense water sensors, such as the GROHE Sense Guard Pro, tells you exactly how much you’ve consumed via an App on your mobile device. Plus, it also acts as a speedy alert to water damage. To find out more, visit grohe-middleeast.com

Ask the
DESIGNER Open up your space. If you are planning to renovate, the biggest and most dramatic change you can make is by opening up the space as much as possible. Many houses in the UAE are built with lots of interior partition walls, which can make them feel smaller and darker. Knocking down any that are unnecessary, as long as it’s structurally sound to do so, will breathe new life into the space. When renovating The Lake House in The Lakes [pictured], I did exactly this and was even able to dramatically widen the door frame leading from the sitting room to the garden, to really enhance the boho holiday vibe. Bring the outside in. The more natural elements you can weave into your space the better. At one end of the scale, that could mean installing a pool in the garden, so you feel the serenity of having water nearby. If that’s not an option, simply bringing fresh flowers into the home can help set the tone – you can’t go wrong with white blooms. Add a wash of white. An easy yet dramatic change to make is painting all the walls white. There are so many shades to choose from but my personal favourite at the moment is Dulux White on White – it’s beautiful.
Introduce some easy updates. If you are renting your property and don’t want to make a big investment, a few choice accessories can go a long way to achieving this look. Lighting is a great place to start both in terms of style and helping to set the mood. Opt for a large beaded chandelier or pendant in the communal areas or in a space that calls for a statement piece, such as the stairwell. Check out our Clay Twist Chandelier, which is hand rolled from raw clay handmade in Africa by a community of women in Kwazulu Natal. Hang your curtains well. Key to this look is long, flowing white or cream linen curtains. The trick is to fix the curtain poles above the window frame, going as high towards the ceiling as possible, while leaving a sensible amount of space at the top. This means you can use the longest curtain length to suit your space, taking the material right down to the floor. This gives the illusion of larger windows, helping the space to feel light and airy. The curtains you can see here are three metres long, bought from IKEA. Use beaded tiebacks, like these ones I source from Indonesia, to cinch each individual curtain in the middle – it creates a lovely shape. +971 56 705 8178, hauteboheme.ae
TIP
A wood effect floor tile enhances this look well, but you can easily dress up a marble floor by layering textiles. Sea grass rugs in black, white or a natural tone work well with faux fur throws in muted hues.

PEACH Beauty boss Maha Morley-Kirk reveals how her passion for books and food inspired her peachy Jumeirah Park home
“I’m a very visual person, and very minimalistic. If my home is messy I can’t stand it,” admits Maha, as she brushes the crumbs from my croissant into a tidy pile as if on autopilot. A self-confessed perfectionist, Maha was living between Saudi Arabia and Dubai before snapping up this four-bedroom family home in Jumeirah Park in 2016. The owner of lash and brow brand Pinky Goat (@pinkygoatlashes), this stylish entrepreneur from Lebanon has a natural flair for aesthetics, but it was the convenience of living within walking distance to her daughter Keona’s school, as opposed to the challenge of a home makeover, that drew her to the property. “Dubai is perennially sunny so it’s easy to feel like you’re on holiday and when it came to the interior design my husband Richard and I wanted to push that vibe by creating a very open, relaxing space,” she says. Now with a foodie blog in the works, Maha is often found in the kitchen experimenting with new recipes, so the first thing on the agenda was knocking down the interior partition walls on the ground floor to create an open-plan space, making it easier to socialise while cooking up a storm. Using Pinterest and Instagram for inspiration, Maha decided upon a peach and grey warehouse style look and feel, carefully selecting the cement style floor tile from RAK Ceramics and teaming with the Blushing Peach paint hue from Jotun. All the renovation and decorating works, which took three months, were completed before the family moved in and the result speaks to the heart. “The kitchen is the core of the home,” says Maha. “We eat breakfast together at the island every morning. My husband bakes fresh bread, so we planted a herb garden to be able to cut some fresh flavours, such as rosemary, to sprinkle on top.” bhomes.com | 37

The living room features wall art from Drawdeck, with peach cushions and a jute rug from The One pulling the look together. WELL READ
Fresh flowers and plants are key to Maha’s home style, as is a fully-stocked library. These Pottery Barn bookshelves are stacked with coffee tables tomes, novels and recipe books, with a rotating selection on loan from the local library. “I’m a social media freak so my antidote is to sit and read,” she says.

A GARDEN THAT GROWS
“I need greenery around me for energy,” says Maha, who laid a real lawn in the back garden so her daughter could pracitse her gymnastics, and switched up the swimming pool tiles to a light blue for a more cohesive colour palette. A wood effect tile was chosen for the entertaining areas, with Pottery Barn dining furniture providing a stylish place for guests to enjoy those summer barbecues. “I have a ‘no take away’ rule,” says Maha. “I love to bake and I also savour my green tea and coffee. I like to grind the beans in the morning – the aroma is amazing.” The front garden is where the wild herbs grow, including thyme, rosemary and mint. “In my old home in Lebanon we have olive trees so it reminds me of that,” she says. “I also have fig, lime, lemon and mango trees here with a pomegranate tree arriving soon from Dubai Garden Centre.”

his was the 44th house I looked at,” says interior stylist Emilie Jacob, referring to the Umm Suqeim 1 villa that she shares with her husband, Pete, and two young children, Stella and Teddy. Having grown up in the south of France, Emilie’s top priority was being located close to the beach, and despite the space consisting of a building site during her first viewing over two years ago, it was love at first sight.

“Most of the trees that you can see in the front garden, including the frangipani, Washingtonia palms, banana, flame and bourgainvillea, were already there,” she says. “I could see the walk to the beach; the openplan, loft-like, bungalow-style layout of the interior with its skylight; plus the side and back outdoor spaces.” The back garden, however, consisted of some brown tiles, interlock bricks, sand and a stark white wall separating the garden from the neighbour’s. “It was a little bit depressing,” Emilie admits. A lonely banana tree in the corner provided the only life, and Emilie ensured its survival during the home’s
three-month refurbishment before she moved in with her family. Since then, three more banana plants joined the first; two of which bore so much fruit that they collapsed under their weight. These are surrounded by the garden’s only stretch of real grass, as it’s the only area that receives enough sunlight for it to thrive. The starting point for the back garden was creating privacy, so Emilie sought advice on creating a tropical bed along the wall. “When you consider living in Dubai, lush plants don’t naturally spring to mind but, with a little guidance, I have created a mini jungle in my backyard that I never tire of.”

Do the sums
“Start by setting your budget, as once you know how much you want to spend you’ll be able to select from a variety of tiles within your price range,” says Dan Charter, director, The House of Tiles (tiles.ae). “Generally speaking, ceramic is the most affordable whereas natural stone is the most expensive.” “The cost of tiles and installation costs will be significantly more than a plaster and painted wall, so if you need to save, keep it simple by tiling to half wall height where possible,” adds Martin Hibbit, managing director of Another Level (055 340 0959, anotherlevel. ae). “This also gives you some painted wall areas that offer a chance to add or change colour styles as and when you feel the need.” bhomes.com | 49
Select your larger items before heading to the tile shop. “It’s best to decide upon colour scheme for your furniture and vanity, and then you can incorporate the colour and texture from your tiles,” advises Dan. “Currently, the majority of my clients are selecting a stone look tile,” says Martin. “However, as a general rule, you should try to keep to your home’s feel and style. If an ultra-modern bathroom doesn’t suit the villa, for instance, then we would favour a more rustic looking tile. Grey and sand (beige or off white) are the hues being used most commonly by our clients.”

Be space aware
When it comes to layout, be conscious of your space. “Mirrored tiles can make the room feel bigger while floor-to-ceiling tiles can make the room appear taller,” says Dan. If you’ve a small bathroom, you should also note that the current trend for layouts such as chevron is exactly what will work. “Choosing a smaller tile versus a larger one will help to make a smaller space look larger,” says Martin. “So if you think a standard 60x60 or 60x30 may not work so well, see if the tile you like is available in a 30x30 version.” And don’t forget the finishing touches. “Grout is always the last piece of the puzzle, but the shade that’s the nearest match to the tile is the one most of our clients end up selecting,” says Martin.

GOLDEN RULES Check your contractor’s credentials. “We have so many ways of viewing designs and styles now that it’s important to do your research,” says Martin. “Look online and come to an agreement on which direction you are heading. Being able to provide a wish list of sorts will help your contractor help you find the right tiles, as simply heading off to tile shops may end up leaving you even more confused. Lastly, always ask for a discount once you have found the right tile. The price can differ per store for some well-known suppliers.”

bove all, a bathroom should be a calm and serene space,” says Karen Pissarra of Dubai based interior design studio Design K (designk.co), who recently finished renovating her Springs 14 villa from top to bottom. “When it came to the guest bathroom, the starting point was the oversized round mirror with its black metal frame in a matte finish. I simply fell in love with it and, as such, it became the impetus for the design of the bathroom.” Teaming a cool palette of black, white and grey (with a flash of greenery), the bathroom has a functional yet stylish design, with its wealth of natural light and fuss-free finish boosting its chic credentials. All the matte black sanitaryware was sourced from BAGNODESIGN on Sheikh Zayed Road. “Many people are currently opting for this finish for their bathroom fixtures, from taps to showerheads." But some finishing touches can be relatively hard to find here in the UAE, if you don’t know where to look. “I had to source the black matte door handles for the villa from the UK," says Karen. "But there are now some suppliers in Dubai who are offering a similar type of product.” Karen called upon City Palace Furniture in Jebel Ali to make the bespoke, handleless cabinets. “I’ve been

“The matte ceramic basin, sourced f rom BAGNO DES IGN, feels so much nicer to touch than glossy ceramic”
Create a calming space
Want to turn a bog standard bathroom into a calm and soothing retreat? Interior designer Karen Pissarra talks us through the basics… 1 Prepare a mood board for the look and feel you want to create, and then research and draw up a list of all the different items you need to buy. If you're seeking some specific pieces that are essential to the look, they may take up to eight weeks to order. And if you miss the boat, you may end up having to settle for something less than perfect. 2 It'll be much easier if you keep the plumbing in the same places. If your design really doesn't allow for this, bear in mind that it'll take more time and money to relocate. 3 Tiling the floor? Insist the existing door frames are removed so that the it's laid properly below the door frame and not retrofit around it. 4 Always check that the waterproofing sealant has been applied correctly and check it as you progress. Even a small nick in the waterproof membrane with a tiller's trowel will compromise its integrity and may result in a leak.

working with them for eight years and rate their work very highly,” she explains. “I love the tongue and groove look of the doors and the handleless aesthetic adds freshness.” The matte ceramic basin was also sourced from BAGNODESIGN – “it feels so much nicer to touch than glossy ceramic, in my opinion” – as were the simple yet stunning rectangular matte wall tile, while the mosaic floor tiles were bought from Casa Mia. “It’s quite a small bathroom, so the colour palette offers the illusion of space,” says Karen. "The glass panel used for the shower is frameless, adding to the open look and feel.” The biggest challenge of the entire project was adding the honed finish marble countertop. “It came as one big slab and when marble is transported this way it can be easy to chip. Unfortunately, when it arrived there was some damage so the supplier needed to source a new piece, which added some extra time to the schedule." When it came to the accessories, a few choice Aesop products, a black hand towel and a potted plant for a touch of greenery were all that was needed to make the bathroom well and truly guest ready.

THE PLACE TO MOVE TO
Arabian Ranches
Arabian Ranches is one of Dubai’s most established family focused communities. Its original gated enclave is home to a mix of Arabian and Spanish styled villas, abundant green spaces and on the doorstep amenities including a retail centre and golf club. The next chapter in premium landscaped suburban living, Arabian Ranches 2 extends further into the desert environs with a similarly, if more contemporary, designed collection of homes. WHY MOVE THERE?
Lush landscaping, large villa plots, plenty of space for kids to ride their bikes and parents to enjoy the peace and quiet, Arabian Ranches 1 and 2 both benefit from easy access to
Dubai’s main arterial routes. Rental rates currently favour the tenant and for those looking to invest in a family home, there are solid deals to be had.
Road and Emirates Road connectivity triangle, a car is nonetheless a must. Dubai International Airport is reachable within 30 minutes.
THE COMMUNITY
SCHOOLS
Around 20 or so ‘mini villa communities’ are spread across the original 1,650acre Dubailand development, from two-bedroom townhouses to grandiose seven-bed homes. Arabian Ranches 2 has a modern edge and three- to seven-bed homes available. The Arabian Ranches Golf Club and nearby Dubai Polo & Equestrian Club add to the sense of exclusivity. TRANSPORT

Faye Rowe has lived in Arabian Ranches since 2012 My husband and I got married at the Polo Club and welcomed two children to our family (who now attend JESS) – all while living in the Ranches. Chris Jones is the Arabian Ranches expert at Betterhomes. If you would like to contact him to arrange a viewing or to learn of any ‘open house’ dates in the area, call 04 885 1848 Arabian Ranches is one of the most coveted family-friendly, pet-friendly communities in Dubai and a wonderful choice for anyone looking for a relaxed villa neighbourhood to settle down in. Offering Arabian-and Spanish-themed freehold villas and townhouses ranging from two to six bedrooms, the original community launched in 2004, however, it more than stands up against some of Dubai’s newer communities due to the superb build quality. Plus, it attracts a high number of end-users who have upgraded their homes before moving on and renting them out so if you shop around you may find something extra special. Arabian Ranches 2 launched in 2015 and the development has proven just as popular. Prices have dipped over the past few years, with your entry point for purchasing a two-bedroom villa in Al Reem from around AED1.25 million. The ball is firmly into the tenant’s court when it comes to rental rates, and landlords largely willing to negotiate. It’s a brilliant time to hold out for a property in a premium position, such as backing onto the lake, for a great value rate. The best bit about the Ranches is that you’ll rarely have to leave. The Golf Club, Maison Mathis and The Hamptons Café in AR1 are all great venues for family meals. Plus, you’re surrounded by nature, with community parks, dedicated children’s play areas, squash and tennis courts and pools to keep you busy.
