Welcome to the issue I think we can all agree that time moved differently last year, which is why it’s slightly hard to believe that we’re already in 2021. With the global situation still precarious, this issue we’re finding distraction in dreamy design, from Victoria Cronin’s eclectically crafted home (page 30), to a fairytale-like garden in The Villa (page 38). And with hope on the horizon, the Art Deco trend (page 16) has us excited for the potential ‘roar’ that’s to come. In the meantime, I suggest snuggling up with a cup of tea and using these pages to inspire your next renovation. Wishing you a very Happy - and healthy - New Year. THE EGYPTIAN EYE
This issue’s
Pinboard
As our travel remains restricted, cultural homeware is a trend we’re going to see more of this year. For this reason, hot on our radar this month is design brand TALATA. Meaning ‘three’ in Arabic, the Egyptian helmed brand was dreamed up by three female designers. In 2018, Mehry El Masy, Mona Ramzy and Farah Dana Zoghbi joined forces to create the brand, which makes one-of-a-kind furniture and accessories. Inspired by Egypt’s rich history, each piece pays homage to the country’s culture in design. Since its inception, the brand has gone from strength to strength and has a UAE-based booth at GIGI in Galleria Mall, Al Barsha. Perfect for adding a unique touch to your home, the Chameleon Collection features scarab beetles and Egyptian symbols in an earthy colour palette. @talata_design

The 2021 trend guide
Local design experts forecast the style patterns we’re going to be seeing this year
After spending a lot of time in our homes during 2020, this year brings a refreshed design lens to the spaces we live in. With the mass revival of interior decorating and renovating set to continue, it’s our lifestyle that is dictating the way our homes (and Instagram feeds) will look. Forecasting the interior trends that should be on your radar, are Dubai-based style experts who have their finger on the pulse ahead of the curve.
Tactile design Pallavi Dean, Founder and Creative Director of Design by Roar The pandemic has deprived us of one of our most important senses touch. In response to that, it has become increasingly important to make use of rich, textured materials that bring tactility to the interior palette. Plus, as home is now where we live, work, exercise and teach our children, this year will see a demand for improved acoustics to accommodate different users in one space. Adding different layers of textures can really help improve how sound travels. How: The obvious options are rugs, cosy furniture and upholstered surfaces, but undulated finishes on walls or elements that feature depth can also muffle noise and add warmth. There are great products on the market, such as the Kvadrat clouds or soft cells - adding these as light features or wall panelling will allow you to sound-proof any space in style.

Back to Nature Lindsay Campbell Crafts, Blogger and stylist at Love in a Home Natural fibres, dried floral arrangements, soft cottons and linen are going to have a serious moment on our Instagram feeds this year. Nature has invaded the home, and it is here to stay. By adding just a touch of this relaxed, ‘imperfect’ trend you can add a depth to your interiors. How: Jute floor cushions are fantastic for in or outdoors (check-out Bound No.82 for these) along with rattan and linen furniture. Add some large pampas grass or dried flowers to a clay vase, and you’ll have the trend sussed. Creased unbleached linen curtains are a bold addition, and yes, the more creased the better with this trend.
Luxurious Neutrals Cynthia Salloum, Home Stylist from White Haven Decor After spending time decluttering last year, this year it’s about making our homes feel more refined using high-quality materials and soft hues. A muted palette – think beige, light brown and light grey – is going to be on trend this year as it brings peace in stressful situations. How: Incorporate natural materials like wood and stone. Marble is a great way to elevate a room while ramping up the chic-factor. I recommend keeping your accessories to a minimum and sticking to hues of black and white to keep the classy tone running throughout. bhomes.com | 13
Transitional spaces Matt A Matouk, Head of Design at MDO Landscape As most people have been doing essentially everything at home for nearly a year, creating a natural flow between indoors and outdoor will not only maximize the home’s space, but it will also give a much-needed boost of wellbeing. By using biophilic design, you can increase your connectivity to nature through architecture. How: For a seamless transition between outdoors and indoors, try approaching the garden as if it were an extension of your living room. Having the same flooring can really help with this. Plus, adding a folding glass doors and windows, will help create a seamless integration between the two.

Retro Minimalism Amy Mill, Founder of Custom No.9 Prepare to see minimal form combined with retro shapes and materials. We’re predicting lots of shapes and angles, with age-old materials like cane still on their comeback growth curve. Less is going to continue to be more, and we think this marriage of nostalgia and modernity will be key in 2021. How: To achieve the retro minimalism look, focus on the feature pieces. Choose dining tables, desks and beds that will make a statement in the home, then complement them with softer furnishings and materials. Custom No.9’s Joni dining table works well as it embraces a sleek curved steel frame and 60s style terrazzo. Custom No. 9

How to master...
Art Deco Sophie Seeger, interior design tutor and artist at Seeger By Design, (seegerbydesign.com) talks us through the postdepression style
ABOUT THE STYLE Art Deco is an art and design movement that got its full name, Arts Décoratifs, from the 1925 International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts, held in Paris. The style was an expression of liberation after The Great Depression and it reflected the glamour of the Roaring Twenties. In look, it was influenced by the sleek lines of the machine age, and there was a nod to Africa, Egypt and Chinese craft techniques due to the rise in leisure tourism. Today, the cubist geometric shapes and Fauvist colours have seen a rise in popularity, particularly since Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby. WHY WE RATE IT Most homes can carry a bit of Art Deco exuberance as it works well paired with modern finishing. Contemporary shapes look great alongside the vintage motifs, materials, colours, and patterns.

HOW TO NAIL IT Be bold with colour. Start with a neutral backdrop of cream or beige then use your furniture, soft furnishings and accessories to inject jewel-toned colours. Emerald and deep ink blue look good mixed with reds, pinks and purples. Use unflinching patterns. Soft furnishings are the best place to make a statement with your pattern choice. Consider Aztec-style printed cushions, animal-print rugs and, if you’re really brave, geometric wallpaper instantly adds a Deco feel. Go all out glamour. Do this with your choice of materials such as highly polished lacquer, mirror, marble and velvet. To capture the spirit of the movement, invest in a swanky drinks trolley or lush velvet sofa. Add in some subtle nods. From geometric vases to sunburst mirrors, there are certain pieces that just hark

back to the Twenties. As the trend is seeing a revival, you can find several pieces on the market at the moment. Embrace the curve. The Deco trend is all about rounded lines, so opt for furniture with curvaceous backs and arms. This spherical design also works well with vases, clocks and light fittings. A SK THE EXPERTS
How can I declutter my home and create an organisation system that works? Luxury home organisers, Celia and Joti from The Savvy Space (@thesavvyspace), share their tips for creating well-organised spaces Start with a personal space or an area where you have the most control and don’t have to worry about other people disrupting your process. That will make it easier to manage, which means you’re more likely to keep going and gain momentum for taking on shared spaces like the living room or kitchen.
Become a low-waste advocate. Do this by focusing on what is important and purposeful in your life. Primarily, this means being thoughtful of what’s in your home, from finding creative ways to repurpose what you already have, to recycling what you don’t need and purchasing new products mindfully.
The first step in creating a successful organisation system is to identify your ultimate goal, either for the space or for how you want to feel in your home. What would your life look like if your home were organised? Start by fleshing that out. It’s a good idea to get very specific with this. Once you have a clear vision of how you’d like the space to work for you, it’s so much easier to make decisions about what should be in there and what you need for it to function properly.
Don’t forget to label. A bit of simple identification will help ensure everyone in the house can help maintain your efforts. We love Homesmiths, as they pretty much stock everything we could possibly need to organise our clients’ homes! IKEA have the very versatile white Kuggis and Variera storage boxes, as well as our absolute favourite Variera pot-lid divider.
Understanding how a space is used plays a big role in how it should be organised. We start by sketching out a blueprint so we can visualise the workflow of a space. Items are grouped and given ‘task zones’. Then we create a ‘real estate’ within those zones, dividing the items into prime and sub-prime categories. Once we’ve determined the ideal location, we focus on accessibility. In the pantry, for example, a prime category would be baking goods and the sub-categories would be flours, sugar, etc. If baking products are bountiful, we may divide it further into powders, sprinkles, etc. And, as baking items are typically not used on a daily basis, they’re placed higher up in a “lesser” convenient real estate area.
A capsule wardrobe is a brilliant way to organise your closet and refine your style. The idea is to focus your clothes around a collection of a few essential and timeless items in each clothing category (shirts, dresses, etc.), which you then augment with seasonal items. Start by determining your style image, so it’s easier to decide what to keep. Then focus on versatile pieces which can be mixed-up so you can have lots of outfit options without overwhelming your closet. We recommend donating or reselling your old clothes: we love resellers RETOLD (@ shopretold) or The Luxury Closet (@theluxurycloset).
Break down the decluttering process. Keep this stage manageable by dividing items into categories to process one at a time. Start easy and reduce your workload by eliminating the obvious first. Grab a bag to collect and remove any obvious rubbish such as empty boxes or anything that is broken. Repeat this for items that don’t belong and need to be relocated elsewhere. bhomes.com | 19
Back to nature Taking a biophilic approach to interior design
“Biophilia”, as coined by the Harvard naturalist Dr Edward O. Wilson, is the innate desire that human beings have to live alongside nature. In recent years his theory has been incorporated into architecture and design in order to improve well-being. After a mass shift in the way we view our homes, local interior designer Antonia Fosberry (@boxi.dxb) noticed an increased demand for naturalinspired spaces. Here are her tips for bringing the outside, in. GO GREEN The first, and most obvious, place to start when approaching this trend is with nature itself. Adding plants to your home is beneficial for both aesthetics and health, so feel free to go wild at the plant souq when going for the biophilic look. A large tree such as a kentia palm or banana leaf acts as a beautiful statement piece, while smaller plants such as cacti, succulents or devil’s ivy (pothos) can be used across the home to add touches of vivacity. LET THE LIGHT IN Honour your body’s natural circadian rhythm by maximising the natural light in your home. During the day, amplify the light with sheer curtains and mirrors. While at night time, try blackout blinds for a restful night’s sleep.
20 | bhomes.com
LET YOUR WALLS DO THE TALKING If you live in the heart of the city and don’t have a green view, use wallpaper to bring the natural world in. Choose a floral, tropical or botanical pattern to highlight a feature wall. Alternatively, a large painting or a gallery wall can also do the trick.

EARTHY HUES Choose a colour palette inspired by nature and stick to it. Earthy tones, calming blues or happy greens work well in unison - you can paint the walls, doors, furniture and even the ceiling for a cohesive feel. That being said, don’t be afraid to add creative colour pops to echo those found in flowers, trees and animals.
FLORAL SMELLS When working closely with the natural world, you can add dimension by crafting a multi-sensory experience. Fresh flowers make a big difference to a space by bringing aroma and life. When the real deal isn’t an option, faux flowers sprayed with essential oils are a good solution. Or, fill your space with scented candles and diffusers that harness scents from the natural environment, such as lavender or pine.
Images in order of appearance: Sofology (sofology.co.uk); Oliver Bonas (oliverbonas.com); Dunelm (dunelm.com)
DESERT DWELLERS One of the principles of biophilic design is to create a relationship with the place in which you are living. As we’re living in the middle of a desert, try to incorporate pieces that echo this. Perhaps you’re inspired by the bougainvillea’s shocking pink or maybe
you want to craft your colour scheme with sandy hues? Whatever it is, pay heed to where you live.
22 | bhomes.com
trends trend | INSPIRATION
NATURAL FABRICS The way your home feels creates synergy between the outside and inside. Opt for as many natural materials as you can. Cotton, linen and silk are great choices for your soft furnishings. Wood is my go-to for achieving the look, and I recommend choosing pieces that show the natural grain and mixing it up with rattan, bamboo, wicker, or cane.

Inside my
menagerie A look around interior designer Victoria Cronin’s eclectically curated home in Motor City

tanding in her garden - among a giant tortoise, pair of baby chickens and a sausage dog Victoria Cronin appears the epitome of elegance in her technicolour skirt and silver sandals. The former architect-turned-interior-designer is poised in nature - which one might have to be considering she’s mother to two girls, two dogs, one cat and a further four chickens (who, at the time, had waddled over to the nearby park). With her innate elegance and offbeat collection of animals, it is quite fitting that the inside of Victoria’s home is a veritable menagerie of colour, style and form. Set down a quiet lane in Motor City’s Green Community, this fourbedroom villa feels unique. From the bare-bottomed cherubs sitting atop the front gate, to the treasure trove of objects and antiques on the inside, there’s something quaint about its feel. “I like interiors that are curated over time,” Victoria, an academic doctorate, explains, “It’s important that the collection of items tells a story and adds layers of interest.”

Victoria’s story begins as soon as you enter her home, when the eye is met by two delicate chinoiserie silk wallpaper panels facing the front door. Along with commanding attention, they have a particularly romantic tale behind them. “That’s my wedding gown,” explains Victoria with a warm smile. “I had a beautiful Jenny Packham gown which was stunning in itself and very valuable, but I’d always wanted some de Gournay wallpaper… So, I sold my wedding dress and bought this handpainted print. I think it’s the best investment I’ve ever made, as now I can enjoy it every day.” Originally from Northampton in England, Victoria lived in India, Kenya, and Singapore before moving to Dubai five years ago. And as you walk around her home, it’s clear that its has been weaved together by this tapestry of dwellings. “There’s a lot of sentimental value in all the things I have,” she says. Going on to study architecture at university, Victoria worked around the world upgrading the quality of living in slums. Spending a lot of time in India as a child, the architect cites her time in Bangladesh as the inspiration for interest in poverty alleviation through design. “My grandfather was the British High Commissioner so I spent a lot of time there from ages six to 16, I think this exposure to the developing world is what sparked my interest in

using design for poverty relief.” Plus, I think that this international outlook and seeing how design is approached by different cultures predisposed my style,” she adds. Furthering her lifelong passion for design, and taking a career shift, Victoria has just launched her own interior design business, Victoria Cronin Studios (@victoriacroninstudio), where she uses her natural eye to create refined spaces for the residents of Dubai. “I like to design spaces that have a sophisticated and calm feel,” she explains. After looking around her unique home – which oozes refined eclecticism – it’s certainly obvious to me that clients who trust Victoria to craft a well-polished, yet interesting space are in good hands.

A
garden quite unlike any other I’ve seen in Dubai, to walk into Andy and Julie’s densely green plot is to be transported. It’s somehow noticeably inspired by the couple’s journey around the globe, yet otherworldly in nature. Winding mandevilla and jaquemontia vines cascade down the home’s architectural arches, giving the space an ethereal feel, while towering trees, hearty bamboo and mature bushes provide welcome salvation from the hot sun. “It’s like a sanctuary,” Julie says, “you can’t hear anything, apart from the song of birds.” The road to crafting their lush garden was, as one might imagine, paved with dedication and effort. “It’s all thanks to my husband,” says Julie fondly. “It’s just become his hobby.”. The process began five years ago after they moved into this house – partly as its large garden was ideal for homing their five cats and two dogs. “When we first got here, the garden was quite private, there were damas trees all around, front and back, but there was no way that we could have built the pool with the number of roots under the ground,” recalls Julie. “When we pulled them all out it was wide open and naked, that’s when we started planting tonnes of bougainvillea,” the mum of one explains. “Then little by little we built things up and now we have this incredible garden.” Originally from America, Julie lived in India and Nepal before meeting her English husband who had been working in Malaysia. “We were both used to the rainforest and that’s definitely what we missed when we moved here,” explains Julie, who works in education. “Now, when I walk around the garden I can see which countries my husband has been influenced by. For example, the bamboo roof with palm leaves on top was inspired by a trip to Bali.” Although inspired by journeys abroad, a lot of the wood used has been repurposed from the local community, “most of the time he’ll pick things up from friends or some Facebook group.” Particularly appreciating her husband’s handy work over the lockdown, Julie explains that the garden provided much needed tranquillity. “It was a blessing that we never expected, with both of us working from home.” Along with providing enviable home office

views, the couple were also able to spend time outside, even during the hot months, “because there is so much shade, we were able to be outside on summer afternoons and evenings - which we didn’t know about our garden as we’re usually not here.” Using mostly native plant species, Craig and Julie have been able to create an ecosystem of their own, one that requires very little maintenance.
“We only water around the edges,” says Julie, “It’s very organic. It grows full on, gets cut back and starts all over again according to the temperature.” At the time of the shoot, Jenny informs us that the garden was not at the height of its bloom potential, but she concludes that this is all part of its, “wild tropical charm” and you’d be hard pressed to disagree with that.

O
ne only has to look to cinema’s great moments to heed the gravitas of a strong set of stairs. From Jack and Rose’s fateful reunion on the Titanic, to Prince Charming kneeling down to grasp Cinderella’s lost shoe, a great staircase is the catalyst for drama. So, when it comes to ramping up the theatre of your interior design, the stairs play a lead role. Not sure where to start when approaching this renovation project? Local expert renovators give us the step-by-step guide:
you want to spend on the project,” says Ranson. “How much time it will take depends on the size, type of finish and scope of works,” says Samiul. “If it is a simple case of reusing the existing stairs and bannisters it will take three to five days, while a complete renovation could take on average anywhere between 10 to 15 days.” Pricing obviously varies on the scope of work, but you’re looking at a ballpark from Dhs10,000 to Dhs15,000.
Plan ahead
Once you’ve landed your perfect renovator, obtaining the right permissions is the next step. “If you are residing within a community under a master developer then you’ll need to get permission. Approvals can be granted within three working days,” says Samiul. If you’re making more than superficial changes to the stairs, such as putting in under stair storage, then your renovator should then produce a CAD drawing to check if it’s structurally possible or not.
Avoid a l‘esprit d‘escalier moment by meticulously planning out your dream staircase before you begin. This starts by choosing the right contractor for you. “Find a company that has produced work similar to the look you want to achieve,” advises Ranson Annang, manager of Handy Scandy (handyscandy.com). “I always advise my clients to check on websites such as Pinterest, then shortlist their top five designs. We then discuss this with them and try to recreate the same style within their budget,” says Samiul Khan, owner of Renovo (renovo.ae).

Improving functionality
Considering its high usage, you’ll want to pick a design that is practical for your family. If you’ve got small children, then a chic, sans-railing design is definitely off the cards and it’s

If you’ve got a beautiful staircase, highlight it using the right lighting
worth considering increasing the size of tread. But do be aware that this will increase the space that the staircase takes up. You’ll also want to be conscious of your material choices here. Although marble and wood can look great, they are usually fairly slippery. Try adding a carpet runner to add grip and style.
Under stair storage
For big families, or those who want a minimal look, adding under stair storage is a practical idea - and it doesn’t need to look ugly. No handled doors give a sleek and modern finish, with some appearing almost invisible

to the eye. Open shelving can add an element of design, particularly when displaying your favourite books or bottles of grape. Or, consider hollowing out the space to create a little play nook, like Handy Scandy did in a Dubailand villa (pictured right).
Approaching the design
“The stairs need to flow with the rest of the house,” says Cinzia Tedeschi, Interior Fit Out Consultant at Superior Living (superiorliving.ae). With the staircase being such an integral part of your villa, and usually one of the first things you see upon entering, it sets a precedence for the rest of the place. Arnaldo Puglia from DNA Associates (dnaassociates.it) suggests going, “for a look that will blend in with the rest of your home or, alternatively, shake things up by picking one that will create a big contrast.”
Materials
The fabrics you use are critical to achieving the look you desire. “Don’t be afraid to have fun and play with materials,” says Arnaldo, who created a quirky dinosaur staircase with wallpaper in a Green Community family villa. Cinzia stresses the importance of selecting quality over style, “Select floor tiles for their quality, rather than colour. It can look really cheap if the sharp edges of the tiles show, so sometimes you’re better off keeping the original tiles you have.”
Railing – handrail – balustrade
Swapping the bannister and spindles of a traditional UAE villa staircase is a simple way to give your set a face-lift. “To remove the dated look of railings and wooden bannisters, go for full glass railings and floating wooden stairs,” says Samiul. It is important to note that you’ll need to invest in tempered, double-laminated and shatterproof glass, which can rack up the dirhams. If you’re ditching the balustrade all together, opt for a wall mounted handrail to carry the minimal look.
Lighting
One of the most important factors for practicality and design is the lighting you choose. “If you’ve got a beautiful staircase, highlight it using lighting,”
says Cinzia. Wall scones work well if you’re sticking to a traditional look, but if you want to update your home’s feel, try contour LED lights which illuminate underneath each stair, achieving a dramatic look. Pendant lights or chandeliers can make a bold statement and really tie in the look, especially if you’ve gone bold with print or a dark colour.
Nest (@nest_co_uk)
Do it yourself
If a complete renovation is off the cards, you can still upgrade your stairs. A dramatic dark wall and healthy dose of art will breathe new life into the stairwell. If your stairs are wooden consider, “using sandpaper to remove the top layer of the wood, but try not to lose the grains,” says Samiul. “Fill in any damaged area with filler, sand again, then once the tread is level and smooth, stain with a new colour. Do the same for the riser (the part of the stairs which faces you), but paint it white as it will provide a lovely contrast.” bhomes.com | 45

Discover how Smart Renovations elevated the style of this family home in Arabian Ranches
“T
he look the client wanted to achieve was immediately clear to us,” explains Cinzia Tedeschi, Interior Fitout consultant at Smart Renovations (smartrenovation.ae). Having lived in their Arabian Ranches home for 10 years, the family of four contacted Cinzia and her team in order to give their home an elegant refresh. “As the mum had a lot of clothes, their main priority was to extend the master bedroom and create a dreamy walk-in wardrobe.” After gaining permission from Emaar, the Smart Renovations began with the renovation fit out. Their goal was to not only expand the space, but also to improve the layout of the bedroom – creating a flow between the ensuite and closet. Downstairs, the home’s previous brown colour palette was given a bright refresh, using sophisticated light fittings to elevate the style. Choosing all new furniture for the home also fell to Cinzia, who took the family shopping in order to help guide the purchases. “I always shop with my clients,” she explains, “I help them to create a flow with the choices they make. It’s important there is someone to oversee the buying process, so that a cohesive look can be achieved when the furniture is put together in the space.” Going for a sophisticated look, Cinzia helped select furniture and accessories that stayed within a neutral colour scheme, with a particular emphasis on gold and grey hues. “It’s important to me that there’s a common thread between the whole house,” says Cinzia, “although some rooms can be slightly different in colour palette, it is really important that you choose a style and stick to it.” The elegant feel achieved by the Smart Renovations team

1 Hiring an interior designer is a sure-fire way to make sure your home keeps a consistent flow. As a professional they will be able to guide you on a colour palette and style that works best for your lifestyle and home's layout. 2 Think before you buy. In order to achieve the wow-factor it's important that you select pieces that work well together. Do this by sticking to your overall style and colour scheme as suggested by your designer. 3 Don't go for cheap finishings as you'll end up having to re-do the renovation work every few years. At Smart Renovations we pride ourselves on using high-quality products that don't break the bank. It's possible to keep a level of quality without spending too much. This also helps to elevate the overall feel of the home. 4 When choosing your main furniture pieces, kitchen and wardrobe design, keep it plain. Simple lines and clean colours make for a refined look. A clean base leaves room for fun while keeping a flow between the whole home.. 5 Accessorise with colour and bold pattern if that's your style, but be careful not to clash design theories between rooms.
