hat comes to mind when you think of Camden, El Poblenou, Seaport, Nolita or Corktown? For us, each spark images of cool, edgy places that don’t play by the rules. Bringing that spunky attitude to our kitchens, Cosentino has named the Silestone Loft range after some of the world’s trendiest neighbourhoods and modelled them in their image. Each colour way represents the industrial aspect of the places by using a range of tones from white, through to grey and black. As such, every countertop hue promises to transform a mundane kitchen into a stylised space that – much like the place it was named after – is bold and unwavering in look and feel. Those looking to take part in the ‘in vogue’ grey moment, should opt for the muted shade of Camden, which was inspired by the eclectic area in London. While folks after a lighter tone to their kitchen should go for the New York-motivated shade Nolita, which is unique and style distinctive – much like its neighbourhood counterpart. And for the few looking to go bold, Corktown is your go-to for its deeply intense shade that adds a touch of Detroit’s old-style glamour to your kitchen. And not only do the surfaces look good, but they do good as they’re made using the new Silestone® HybriQ+ technology which reuses raw materials. A first for Cosentino – who are committed to protecting the environment – the counters are a hybrid of recycled materials and natural minerals. This new finish means a modern aesthetic is achieved whilst maintaining Silestone’s high quality that allows them to provide a 25-year guarantee. Not only this, but Cosentino’s production process is now carried out using 98 percent recycled water and with 100 percent renewable energy. cosentino.com/silestone bhomes.com | 11

How to master...
Industrial style Alison Grace-Gahan, senior tutor at the National Design Academy Dubai (nda.ac.uk), shares her tips for achieving this post-modernist style in any home
ABOUT THE STYLE No frills allowed. This style is tough by nature. The design blueprint was born at the end of the 19th century, when factories and warehouses started to be repurposed as homes and offices. Celebrating the natural materials of construction, the style commands attention with its bare bricks, brushed iron, concrete surfaces and distressed wood.
WHY WE RATE IT Practical and fuss-free, the industrial style is tough and trendy. It’s ideal for those who prefer to keep clutter

to a minimum, as you’ll find that less is truly more when it comes to achieving this look. It works best in spaces that exude character (which is why it’s popular in factory conversions), but you can easily take your cues from such spaces and adapt them to suit your own home.
HOW TO NAIL IT Material world. Getting this look right is dependent on the materials you use. To go all out opt for a faux brick wall and concrete-style flooring which you can pick up at Dragon Mart. Or, if you don’t want to fully commit, choose reclaimed wood furniture, (Wood & Steel, @wood. and.steel has plenty of choice), metal lamps and monochrome accessories. Tone it down. When decking a room in this style, go for a sparsely
furnished look with a predominantly neutral colour scheme. If you want to add a pop of colour, I say do it on the walls with some striking modern art. The soft touch. If the space is looking too cold, try bringing in some dimension by adding natural fabrics such as linen, burlap, hessian, or canvas. These materials fit in with the simplistic look while adding a warmer colour palette.

A SK THE EXPERT
How do I add a fun twist to my festive table? Owner of Party Camel (@partycameldubai) and self-confessed occassion queen, Aisha Leitner shares her tips for decorating your table
Pick your colour palette in unison with your tree. The tree should be the central decoration of your home and so I recommend picking the table’s main hues in unison. If you’re a decorating fan like me, then it can be quite nice to change up the tree’s theme each year, along with your dinner table spread. I start planning mine as soon as Halloween is over on November 1st. Don’t feel limited to traditional colours. Just because it’s the festive season, it doesn’t mean you need to constrain yourself to the colours of Christmas - I actually think red and green are outdated. You can really have fun with the shades you pick and there are no hard and fast rules, especially when going for a modern look. White is a good base to start with as it blends things together. I personally like to pair white with red, silver or gold, but you’ll see (left) that I’ve also used subtle pops of neon. Start with the end in mind. Planning ahead is key for achieving the overall feel you want. I start by mood-boarding the look and then work from there. But you can also start by choosing a few key pieces to base your theme around. Picking a decorating style is always a good idea – mine (left) was over-the-top, yet stylish. The balloons were a key element in achieving the fun end result. When going avant-garde, more is more. Although it can be scary to go all-out, especially if you’re a perfectionist like me, take your theme and choose pieces you love. Once you have them, start with the middle of the
table and work outwards. For your centrepiece you can either select one ‘wow’ piece, or create a design with a few pieces. The trick to getting it right is to just have fun with it. Strike a balance between elegant and kitsch. You can keep the spread looking stylish by using high quality tableware mixed in with your fun items. Adding height to your spread is also a way to elevate the design – both physically and in terms of style. I do this with cake stands and tall candles. Adding a bouquet, or even several bunches of fresh flowers, is a sure-fire way to add a touch of class to your spread. Design with entertainment in mind. Whether you’ve got kids or not, lay your spread with fun in mind. Along with the traditional crackers, I like to include little table-friendly games such as trivia cards, charades and Elfie Selfie Kits. It means that the fun keeps flowing, and everyone is having fun. Plus, if you do have little ones, it encourages them to sit at the table for longer. There are many great shops to pick up festive items in the UAE. I love to pick up decorations and serving plates from Pottery Barn, West Elm and Crate and Barrel. Irony Home has loads of traditional items along some more unusual statement pieces – so you’ll definitely find something to fit your theme. And, of course, there’s Party Camel for all your fun and cute items, like my reindeer pi•ata, hanging garlands, and games. Plus, we do lots of adorable stocking fillers and wrapping paper.

A winter’s tale
Embrace the seasonal change with the bohemian folklore trend Once upon a time – early 2020, to be precise – perspectives were shifted, and the people turned inwards. As they retreated into their homes, they yearned for layers of warmth untold and found a look routed in bohemian tradition. The folk trend has a warm and seasonal feel which is achieved by using a combination of natural materials, soul-warming fabrics and bold prints. Home styling expert Sarah Johnson from Sarah Johnson Staging (sarahjohnson-consulting.com) talks us through how to use the style to bring a wholesome feel into our abode this winter. So, nestle down, hot cocoa in hand, as we journey into the realm of folklore…
22 | bhomes.com
TIP “Play around with various types of pieces, while using a mix of fabrics such as wood, stone, leather, natural fibres, ceramics, and fluffy rugs to bring extra soul to your space.”
PATCHWORK OF MEMORIES “If you have a curious mind, a traveller’s soul, and an insatiable quest for earthy, real life, then this look is for you. The folk trend is luminous, full of life and natural colours,” explains Sarah. “It has a friendly spirit that mixes styles and objects. I suggest you play around with various types of pieces, while using a mix of fabrics such as wood, stone, leather, natural fibres, ceramics and fluffy rugs to bring extra soul to your space. You want to make your home a harmonious patchwork that evolves with you, your travels and discoveries.” bhomes.com | 23
MAKE A STATEMENT “The folk look is anything but coordinated. Let your imagination run wild and revel in the opportunity to combine contrasting textiles, patterns and finishes. Don’t be afraid of mixing and combining styles ornate, handmade upholstery bodes well with rustic inspired cottons, painted wood and luxurious velvets. This is a movement of contrasts. Mix classic furniture with quirky accessories for a refreshing take on the look. I suggest that all your major pieces have timeless lines which you can then pair with mementoes from your travels or unique finds for a truly bohemian feel.” GO LOCAL This style yearns for a local feel. “Home-grown artisans tend to embrace urban design and sustainability, which work well with a traditional folk style. I particularly like looking for alternative pieces at Tribe, Home and Soul and Urban Nest, as they each have unique finds that you won’t necessarily find on the high-street.” GO VINTAGE “The decorative universe of the folk trend plays on eclecticism and old-time communities, but it stands out from other vintage genres because of the stories attached to the pieces. If you can’t buy secondhand you can still achieve the same look by using less but deliberate items such as an intricately patterned chair, or simple wooden chest.” GET COSY Perfect for the cooler months, the folk style harnesses the power of ‘hygge’. “It is a way of living,” says Sarah. “It’s unpretentious, cosy and welcoming all at the same

INTO THE WOODS “Folk is inspired by wildlife,” says Sarah. “Think nature motifs and craftsmanship that come from cultures close to Mother Earth. Bring the woods in by using animal motif patterns and plants around your home. In terms of wall colours, I suggest you go for natural hues, including pale pinks, olives, blues, browns and rich greens. For the finishing touches it’s all about the rustic textures and floral arrangements.”

Behind the doors of Alina Bokhari’s bold family-home
“I
’m a romantic at heart,” prefaces founder and designer of The Yellow Tree House, Alina Bokhari, as she begins to share her home’s design philosophy. “My home is a visual representation of human expression. Whether that be in a beautiful rug or a hand-woven tapestry, or perhaps a beautifully carved piece of wood, there’s romance to be found within the interaction between the artist and their raw elements. It doesn’t matter if it’s wood, fabric or paint – it comes from the heart – and that is how I bring soul into my home,” outlines the designer as we sit in her Springs villa. And soul it certainly has. Alina’s home is both colourfully bold and elegantly dark. It’s in this artful weave between moody dark hues, and shockingly bright objects that the magic is found. “I instinctively knew the dark charcoal would work,” says Alina, “the grounding neutral tone makes it the perfect backdrop.” It’s a result of her style instinct that the designer has crafted such a unique looking home. Well, that and her
painstaking attention to detail. Consistently readjusting and realigning items throughout our shoot, Alina’s yearn for perfection yields graceful results. More than just due diligence has gone into creating the designer’s dream home, though. She has spent a lot of time collecting the pieces that make up each room. “A home doesn’t get made overnight,” she says. “Mine is made up of items that I love – and that have taken years to build up.” Before moving to Dubai seven years ago, Alina and her husband were living in Jeddah with their two kids, where she was working in marketing. After being in the Emirates for one year, the family moved into their four-bed villa. “I started with the sofa and the two armchairs from Marina Home,” she explains, “and although my painting collection then comprised of just two pieces, I picked the furniture in neutral colours with my future art collection in mind.” All of the paintings are original works and, although very different in style, work harmoniously together to produce a beautifully curated gallery. But undeniably there bhomes.com | 35
is one item in the living room that commands the most attention – the bright fuchsia rug. “It was a splurge, but it was worth it,” explains Alina, who sourced the carpet from Abbas Carpets in Pakistan. Originally from Lahore, which is rich in greenery, Alina says she likes living in The Springs because it reminds her of home. “I love nature, and when we found this community I realised I could make a home for myself here.” Drawing inspiration from the outdoors, there’s a noticeable nod to natural material throughout. “I love the rawness of live edged wood,” she explains. Alina had the kitchen’s breakfast bar and powder room’s countertop fashioned in raw wood from Lucky’s, along with her large dining table. The dining room was extended into the garden – as per renovation regulations in the community – to increase space for entertaining. Meanwhile, the kitchen has received two face-lifts. Starting with colourful Mediterranean-style tiles, Alina put in a new shiny backsplash from Tile Societies. She then painted the formerly dark wood cabinets in a deep grey, to match the rest of the home’s moody ambience. A decent smattering of plants – both dried and alive – help contribute to the dreamy, yet dramatic feeling of the villa. These, along with Alina’s sophisticated curation of objects, books and art, mean it’s no wonder the interior designer is pegged as ‘the creator of dream homes’. Last year, deciding to harness her innate design flair, the mother of two started The Yellow Tree House after receiving a diploma from the National Design Academy. Much like her approach to design, choosing the name was a carefully deliberated decision. “I wanted a story, something emotional that meant something,” Alina describes. “When I was little, I used to have a tree in the backyard that had yellow flowers; it gives me a warm feeling when I look back. This fits my business well as it symbolises that it is more than a run-of-the-mill interior service. It means something emotional to me and that is my attitude to design.”

ELEGANT TOUCHES The office space upstairs has a lighter feel but is finished with the same careful consideration as the downstairs. This is also true of Alina’s daughter’s room, which is painted in a delicate blush pink tone. Of course, this was another deliberate decision from Alina, who said, “My husband and I are both light sleepers, so having a bright coloured room doesn’t work for us. Anam Clarke from The Designer’s Studio on creating a Grecian-inspired garden that’s perfect for evening entertaining
bhomes.com | 43
“I
t was the lockdown that sparked the renovation,” says Anam Clarke as she leans back on her bar stool. “If it wasn’t for the extra time at home, I think this would have taken another year to finish, and maybe it wouldn’t have had the same Mykonos-inspired design,” she adds, looking out over her well-lit garden. Owner of the Designers Studio, Anam, and her husband Keegan, bought their Springs marital home in 2016, renovating the interior to suit their social lifestyle before they moved in. With a main focus on the interior, the fun-loving couple saw the garden as merely a means to an end, or rather a means to braai – as Keegan is a proud South African. That was until the global pandemic saw the couple spending more time at home and dreaming about travel. “We were sitting outside and thinking of all the holidays we couldn’t go on this year, when we decided to redo the garden,” explains Anam. “We wanted to make our own little holiday at home. A place that we could relax in, should we have to be locked down again.” Starting with a blank canvas of grass and tile, the couple set to work creating a space that was conducive to relaxing and socialising, while adhering to their all-important vacation vibe. “It was certainly a labour of love,” Anam laughs. “We actually decided that we would take on the project as a couple during the lockdown.” To start, they added the planter boxes, built-up a wall and created Keegan’s dream braai area. “To make it more usable, we created various zones in the space, including a partition with the bar in front of the outdoor gym and created a cosy dining area using rugs we already had.” Looking at the couple’s Europeaninspired garden as dusk begins to fall – and enjoying their friendly company – their love for hosting is abundantly clear. “We’re a really social couple,” says Anam. “All of our friends know us as the ones who bring a good time.” Naturally, the garden has various areas in which to entertain – including a bar, dining table and Jacuzzi – but it’s definitely the warmly lit pergola that takes centre stage. “It was a particularly hot day that we stencilled the tiles,” Anam explains. “The stencil came from Dizzy Duck Designs in the UK and we used the

dark grey colour on top. I think it really brings out the beauty in the space.” After purchasing the gazebo secondhand and redoing the curtains, design-maven Anam worked her magic to fashion a cosy space. “In terms of colour scheme, the style really flows from the inside to the out, which is great when we have the doors open at the weekend. I had Perfect Proportions make the furniture and then found the gorgeous peacock chair at Pan Emirates.” Sharing pictures of the garden before lockdown, it was a
simple patch of grass – albeit a wellkept one. “Now the garden is the space that I come to relax,” says Anam, who works full-time mentoring students on interior design. “After a long day at the studio, I love listening to the fire and the lake while sipping on a cup of tea. It’s really relaxing.” Looking ahead to the festive season, Anam says, “We’re lucky that both our parents live out here in Dubai, so we’ll probably have them over for a festive braai.” And with a garden like hers, we’re not surprised.

IF YOU LIKE TO DINE ALFRESCO LIKE ANAM ADDING A BESPOKE BARBECUE TO IS A GREAT ADDITION FOR BOTH LIFESTYLE, AND DESIGN
HOW TO: Design your own holiday-inspired garden perfect for entertaining, according to Anam Clarke Pick a country to style the garden on. Consider choosing a destination to base your decor design on, and make sure it fits with how you plan to use the space. I created a Grecian-type safe haven, in which we could unwind and host parties. Zone out your space. It’s important to create various areas if you plan on hosting guests (post-pandemic). An outdoor kitchen is a worthwhile investment if you love to cook outside. I suggest putting a dining area near your cooking area, then fashion a separate living area so you can have some people relaxing, while the others help with the cooking. Go bespoke. Getting furniture made really helps to put your stamp on the space. Perfect Proportions (perfectproportions.ae) are able to craft dream pieces down to the last
detail. Our dining table has gold veining throughout it, which really helps to draw everything together. Mix and match various styles. I do like sets, but having various pieces makes it look more interesting. A lot of people are building pallet furniture at the moment – that can look great, especially in dark rich wood. Items from your travels can be a great way to add a personal touch, but keep your theme in mind so it doesn’t go too far into the eclectic side. All about the tiles. Tiles make a big difference when creating a holiday feel. If you’ve already got some down, stencilling them is the way to go, I recommend Dizzy Duck Designs (dizzyduckdesigns.com) for unique styles. And if you’re looking for dreamy backsplash tiles, Mosaico (mosaic.ae) is great. bhomes.com | 45

LIFE ON THE EDGE Take your balcony from dust collecting, to memory making
Let it flow
Whether you live in an apartment or a villa, the balcony is an opportunity to extend your living space, giving you more room in which to entertain or relax. And if you’re someone who likes to have doors flung open during the winter months, it’s a good idea to create an effortless flow between inside and out with the décor. “Make an extension of your home’s interior that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing,” advises Karen Bilton Butterfield from
Bilton Butterfield Interiors (@interiors_ by _biltonbutterfield). “You can craft it into a cosy outdoor room that is inviting and functional with an eclectic mix of objects, cushions, patterns and textures.” If you’re styling a bedroom balcony, “consider adding plants, lighting, rugs, accessories and art to give it a cosy feel that works in unison with the bedroom,” says Ash Young of Adore Décor DXB (@adoredecordxb).
Come rain, come shine
The hot climate and sand are something to bear in mind when choosing materials for your balcony furniture and accessories – particularly if your balcony is open to the elements. “Swing chairs and hammocks are great, durable and can be covered when needed. Wood is pretty sturdy so makes for a sound choice for furniture,” says Saminah Mahmood from Monochrome Home DXB (@monochromehomedxb). “I could afford to use wicker on my balcony because it doesn’t get the direct sun, but if you do, I suggest opting for more

With cooler winds blowing in, many of us are turning our eye to the outdoor areas that have been conveniently situated out-of-sight and out-of-mind over the summer. Perhaps you’re sprucing up your apartment balcony, or deciding to make use of the alfresco areas off the bedroom in your villa, giving your outside space a refresh adds square footage to your home which you can purpose for work, relaxation and entertainment.

durable options like teak, powdercoated aluminium and concrete. When accessorising, “Look for pieces that can be easily cleaned,” says Ash. “Outdoor rugs are fantastic as they can be washed with a hose and broom!”
Space savers
Whether you’ve a sprawling balcony or a slightly awkward space, playing to the size is key. If you’ve got a particularly tiny space to work with, bespoke furniture is an option. Bespoke Balconies (@bespokebalconiesdxb) make custom palette furniture that fits snuggly in cosy nooks and corners so you’re not losing valuable floor space. If you plan on entertaining, consider buying some floor cushions or bean bags that can easily be moved around or put inside, if they’re not needed.
The view
One of the first things to consider when designing a balcony is the view you’re looking out onto. Have you got beautiful waterfront vistas that need to be in plain sight? Or perhaps your balcony looks over your neighbour’s garden and adding some privacy would make the space more useable? If you’ve got a stunning vista, “Opt for a high table so that you can see over the rail and soak in the view as you dine alfresco,” recommends Karen. If creating privacy is key, “create a natural wall using bushes, plants and bamboo. That way, some of the light will still be able to filter through,” says Saminah. Adding shade to your space shelters it from the sun and adds seclusion, “Bamboo roller blinds are particularly effective in smaller spaces, as they can be raised and lowered as needed. But, for larger outdoor areas, a permanent canopy or pergola adds privacy and can be styled

as an additional area of your garden.”
Light it up Crafting an ambience is the key to wanting to spend more time on your balcony, and lighting plays a huge part in this. “LED string lights are durable, easy to hang, and add atmosphere,” says Saminah. “Accent lighting, like fairy lights and flameless candles, are ideal if you enjoy alfresco dining.” If fairy lights or candles aren’t really your scene, ACE (aceuae.com) has a selection of solar powered lanterns, and Desert River (desertriver.com) is your go-to for colour-changing table lights.
Back to nature
“Your choice of plants should reflect the climate,” says Ash. “Cacti and low water varieties like agave are my favourites to use as they are relatively low maintenance.” In terms of flowers, the desert rose thrives in the heat, along with frangipani trees and bougainvillea bushes. But if you don’t have a green thumb, “artificial plants and flowers are hassle free and can still create that garden feel.” Or, for a bohemian style, “try hanging or displaying dried wheat and grasses,” says Karen. For beautiful dried bouquets, try Wilts and Blooms (@wiltsandblooms), which imports preserved flowers and plants from Europe.

To the wall
When it comes to decorating a balcony – small or large – the wall can be a major style feature. “People often forget to use their wall space,” says Saminah, “but weather resistant art, tapestries, delicate curtains or hang planters extend your outdoor area and add design flair.” Karen used her wall to finish the boho feel of her space, “I made a feature wall by hanging African plates, baskets, a couple of mirrors and a macramé wall hanging,” she explains. Meanwhile, on Ash’s bedroom balcony, she used fun tiles on the wall to make a design statement, “The flamingo tile art is a quirky detail which works especially well in an outdoor space as it’s somewhat unexpected,” says Ash.

Kitchen chic
How Nikesha McGrath achieved the sleek kitchen of her dreams in Arabian Ranches
“I
t all started with the hexagon backsplash tile,” explains Nikesha McGrath of Decovate Designs (decovate.me), talking about her own kitchen renovation project. “I saw it in a magazine and took great pride in tracking it down in Dubai, as, at the time, it wasn’t as popular as it is now.” Eventually finding the tile at Dragonmart, Nikesha based the kitchen’s muted colour palette around the ceramic’s grey hue, using a dark grout to make them pop. Adding stylish flair, the designer brought in hints of metallic sliver via her accessories. It was after living in the Al Reem villa for three years that the interior designer decided she wanted a, ‘complete makeover’ from the original dark wood kitchen. “Our main priorities were a convenient storage system, a good extractor fan, and a central seating area that we could spend time at as a family.” In order to make the space more modern and suitable for family living, “we knocked down the adjoining wall between the kitchen and dining room, put in new flooring and selected light coloured cabinets from Kaiser,” explains the mother of two. “To stay within the budget, we decided it was more important to spend the money on the kitchen itself and to negotiate on things that were not visible – like the built-in appliances.” By merit of hiding the appliances, Nikesha was able to create a sleek look that works towards achieving a minimal design. Symmetry was also important to the style-conscious designer. “Having opened up the space, it was key for me to create a symmetrical look, and since it was now permanently on show I wanted a kitchen that could be displayed,” she explains. When it came to accessorising the space, Nikesha wanted to keep it feeling spacious and

uncluttered. Each of the appliances on display was carefully selected for their aesthetically pleasing design. “The grey colour scheme makes for the perfect backdrop to showcasing the Smeg products and La Germania cooking range,” says Nikesha. “I chose the clear chairs from Kartell in order maintain that open feeling.” As a way to add a pop of colour and give nod to her former career as a fashion designer, Nikesha also wallmounted an Hermès scarf above the dining table. “The final look is symmetrical, clean and calming,” the designer describes, “There are elements of style without being too ‘showy’. These can be seen in subtle details such as the brushed silver hardware and the hexagon tiled backsplash with dark grout.” Reflecting on her finished design, she says, “The kitchen is commercial without being mainstream, and there is enough of a ‘twist’ to give it an edge. It feels aspirational, yet accessible due to the clever mix of materials, price points, and vendors.”
CLEAR CHAIRS GIVE KITCHEN THE ILLUSION OF MORE SPACE
THE VERDICT “As one of my first projects as an interior designer, I’m really proud of it. I think the space is wonderful and marvel at it every day,” says Nikesha.

Minimal design, maximum effect
Nikesha McGrath explains how to approach your kitchen renovation for a simple yet sleek look 1 Enlist the help of a good contractor – with a high level of quality control. Your contractor should have superb attention to detail, as the simplistic nature of the minimalist look means that any misalignment is easily noticed. 2 Flooring is as important as the kitchen itself and should be considered alongside your kitchen at the design stage. With wood, opt for a subtle grain and keep tile patterns restrained, so they’re not in competition with the backsplash. Aim for a clean and understated luxury look in your flooring and it will elevate the finish of the kitchen. 3 To create interest in a neutral coloured kitchen, combine and play around with different surfaces. Pair light-catching backsplash tiles with matte cupboards and brushed sliver hardware. 4 Lighting is key. It accentuates patterns in materials, helps you to see properly and complements the linear lines of the cabinets. The main lighting should illuminate the whole space, Spotlights are a great way to do this. While under-cabinet lights are a way to add some mood in the evenings. 5 A muted colour palette works as the perfect base for you to be adventurous with the styling. Go for pastel coloured mugs or splash out on that bright green toaster you have always wanted. The great thing about adding fun accessories is that if you want to change your kitchen’s look in the future, it's easy to do so without spending much.
