Practicality should be high on your agenda when it comes to choosing furniture. If you have a toddler or are planning to have kids, reduce stress levels by selecting pieces with rounded edges. With older kids or large a family, additional seating such as floor poufs are useful should the size of the room allow it.

To begin, think about how you would like to socialise as a family. Once you work out how you would like to spend time in the room you can plan your furniture accordingly. Is a big sofa important to cosy up on for home movie nights? Or, perhaps you’ll need a big coffee table to play board games on? And maybe you should be investing in a cosy armchair where mum can curl up with her cup of tea after a long day? Asking these questions will help you select items that suit your lifestyle.

Comfort and practicality should be the MO for fabric selection. When choosing your sofa, don’t fall in love with something that looks amazing but will require constant cleaning – especially when you’ve got little children or pets. Instead,

opt for fabrics and finishes that are easy to maintain. If your heart is set on a light toned sofa, I suggest choosing one in velvet as it will have a longer life than other fabrics and it’s much easier to clean. If you’re after an everyday boho style, try matching velvet with linens, wood and rattan for a fashionable natural look.

Make it personal to your family.

Every family has its own story to tell and memories to showcase, the walls are a good place to do this. You can create a gallery wall featuring your favourite photographs and children’s artwork or, perhaps you’ll want to hang your beloved vinyl collection – whatever sparks a smile is right for you.

Accessories turn a house into a home. A room is not complete without decorative accessories, wall art, soft furnishings and greenery. Adding touches to the space that speak to you is a good way to do this.

One of my favourite ways to display the decorations is via an open-shelving unit or bookcase. A very simple set of shelves can easily can turn into a focal point when styled properly.

The kitchen

The kitchen often becomes the hub of a family home - we spend a lot of time in there, cooking meals and finding snack solutions for our ever-hungry children. Linda Dekkers, interior stylist at Live Loud Girl (@liveloudgirl), tells us how to design a space that allows for after school chats and home cooked meals

POTS IN A ROW If you’ve got lots of people in and out of the kitchen, clear organisation is key.

Celia Vrank, from the Savvy Space (@thesavvyspace), shares her tips for implementing a system that works.

Create 3 primary work zones; for prepping, cooking and cleaning, then store related items within that zone. For example, in the prep space, everything needed to chop or mix should be reachable within a step or two and without disturbing the cook zone. This will keep movement more fluid and it will feel less like a game of bumper cars when preparing meals.

Putting your personal style into doesn’t have to be expensive. Changing cabinets can alter the whole look for example. IKEA offers many affordable cabinet options, which I recommended pairing with doors and handles from somewhere like Fronteriors.

Keep your countertops clutter free. Having enough storage for appliances and utensils is a key element in ensuring your worktops are empty of clutter.

Using pots and crates can add to the design of the room while helping with organisation.

An island makes for a social feature in the kitchen. A central worktop allows you to prepare a meal without turning your back to anyone. Besides this, it’s a perfect way to get some extra

storage and countertop space. For me, having an island makes the kitchen more of a living space, rather than just somewhere to cook – as a family, we start and end our day sat on stools here.

For a clean and minimal look opt for light colours. Grey and white marble floor is a cool combination for the hot climate.

Handless cabinets are a modern choice that make the room look ultra-sleek and organised.

Having great lighting is important. Installing a variety of lighting options for different situations is a luxury. Use your natural light as much as possible or bright white light for when you’re following a recipe with your kids, while warmer toned lights from pendants are nice for sitting around the island for a casual dinner.

Kids’ dishes often come in a variety of shapes and sizes that don’t stack or nest well, so storing them on a dish rack in the cupboard will keep them tidy and easy to access.

Use turntables to take advantage of deep cabinets and keep groups of related items easily visible. These are especially great for ensuring small containers don’t get lost in the crowd.

Label, label, label! Nothing is off limits or too obvious when it comes to labelling. Be specific and avoid vague terms such as ‘miscellaneous’ to ensure the whole family can help to keep things in order.

The bedroom

We all remember our childhood bedroom, so designing one that will be looked back on fondly is a nice idea. Kristine Georgakopoulos, interior designer at Eclectic Living (@eclectic.living), shares her tips on creating a room that balances rest and play

Start by ensuring the room has longevity. Do this by investing in a good quality bed that will last and grow with your child. Then choose decorative pieces that are easily installed and replaced when needed – removable wallpaper, mobiles and murals are all good choices. I recommend staying away from themes or characters that will date quickly.

Be playful with colour, pattern and print. Create a youthful feel by going bold on the bedding, window treatments, soft furnishings and rugs. You can also add interesting details with wall murals, wallpaper and artwork.

Use your child’s favourite toys as decorative items. As they are often colourful and reflective of their interests, well-loved toys do well as room-enhancing items. I like to mount child-height wire baskets on the wall, to create more floor space for play time.

Layer the lighting in the room. Use statement ceiling lights to light up the room; softer lighting for bedtime stories; night-lights for comfort; and fairy lights for a magical touch.

Let the kids have a say. You’ll want to design a space that’s unique to your child, one that reflects their personalities, interests and likes. So, allow them to be creative and to express their own personality by asking them to help you choose the furnishings and colours in their bedroom.

Invest in good quality storage. Children play with toys for at least a decade, so spending on good quality storage is a good idea. Once they become teenagers the storage can be used to store clothes, books and gadgets.

Just because it’s designed for studying, doesn’t mean the space has to be boring. Creating a study area with bright colors and patterns automatically makes the thought of homework more attractive.

When choosing storage solutions, opt for a combination of open and closed storage. This allows kids easy access to books on their shelves, while the closed drawers keep the room tidy.

If you can, creating a space between the bed and desk is a good way to separate rest from work. If space allows, do this with a room divider, or with the use of different coloured paint.

s the cooler winds of autumn drift in, and our minds turn to thoughts of cosying up inside, we’re marking the season anew with a move closer to nature. And helping us bring harmony between the outside-in, is Crate and Barrel’s Modern Prairie collection that marries traditional artistry with modern craft.

How do I create an office space that makes working from home more productive?

Interior stylist Krisann D (@krissyd.stylist) shares her tips for creating a dedicated work station at home There’s no need to assign one room to being a sole office. Creating an office space that you can concentrate in has become a necessity, and the good news is you don’t need much room to make it work. All you need is a few square feet in room that you’re currently not utilising.

Your office space should leave you feeling inspired and focused. It’s true what they say – a decluttered desk is a less cluttered mind! When choosing the right spot to set up, make sure you’re selecting a room or a corner that’s quiet, free of distractions, and distinct enough from the rest of your home so you can step back when you stop working for the day.

Research says natural light is key for productivity levels, making the location of windows important when choosing your desk space. If it’s not possible to be right beside one, you can use mirrors to play around with light.

I suggest placing a small mirror to the side of your desk and you’ll benefit from refraction without being distracted by your reflection.

Colour can be inspiring or demotivating, so pick wisely. Starring at a white wall allday can feel demoralising, and while it might suffice in office buildings, at home you can play around with colour to see what feels best for you. Green is known for its focus-enhancing properties and yellow is always a safe bet when creating an uplifting space. I’ve recently designed an office with a black wall, adding

colourful pops of art which can be a fun way to brighten the feel of a room.

For your desk – strike a balance between good looks and practicality. Although a minimalist style desk may look fancy, it can be unconducive to work when your papers begin to mount up. Instead, opt for one that’s suited to your daily tasks. I look for long desks with ample storage beneath.

Ensure your chair passes the ‘just-right’ challenge. You don’t want to be so relaxed that it’s hard to concentrate, neither too uncomfortable that sitting at the desk seems like a chore. Find a chair that works for you and your posture by testing them out in the shop before you buy.

Organisation doesn’t have to mean bulky filing cabinets. Go Marie Kondo on your papers and find a system that works for you.

I like to buy the transparent organisers and fill them with colourful folders to create a fun pop. Also, purchasing some wire management tools are a good idea for keeping the desktop organised.

Keep it personal. Allow your workspace to tell your story with little touches of what inspires you and uplifts your mood. If you like to display pictures, try hanging them on the wall to free up space on your desktop. I also always recommend adding plants to the surrounding area.

Colour your home happy with a throwback to the décor trends of the 1960s

Events this year have seen many of us yearn for the comfort of times gone by. Which is why homeware trends from the ‘60s are increasingly in vogue - mid-century inspired furniture pieces becoming common design choices. Going for this look means rebelling against keeping it simple and, instead, being bold – think ditsy florals and funky prints. The overall look is playful, and when juxtaposed with modern finishings it’s a quirky way to make a statement.

ALL THINGS BRIGHT “At the start of the decade, the colours in most ‘60s homes were inspired by nature, with avocado green, orange and yellow being very popular,” explains Anna. “But as the appetite for rebellion increased, there was a surge in the use of vibrant hues. When bringing these tones into a modern space, I suggest you opt for earthy colours as your base – magnolia is particularly trendy - and ramp up the atmosphere with vibrant accessories.”

FLOWER POWER The hippie movement meant that, “Floral motifs became the pattern of the time, flourishing on everything from upholstery to drapes.” If you’re looking for a way to bring some fun into your home, “Don’t be afraid to go brave with geometric patterns, paisley and florals prints on your upholstery.”

NATURAL WOOD “When going retro, natural wood is the leading material.

Showcasing it in its original state is key, so you’ll want to invest in pieces that show off the raw beauty of grains,” says Anna. “Most furniture of the time was positioned low to the ground for comfort, so an easy way to bring a hint of the era into your home is by investing in a comfy sofa with wooden peg legs.”

SHAG RUGS A defining accessory of the time was the shag rug. “The high pile rug was usually seen atop some original parquet flooring, but here they work just as well on top of tiles as a subtle nod to the trend. Go simple with a solid colour or choose a well-balanced geometric pattern for a boosted look.”

MAKE IT POP “One of my favourite ways to work this look is by incorporating pop art and posters from the era of social progress. Lively prints add an extra charm to any room and can be easily sourced from Amazon.”

STYLE REVOLUTION Incorporating this trend into a modern home is all about the styling. “A statement teak console or bookshelf with a lavish floral display placed on top, and a poster featuring abstract art hanging on the wall, hits the nail on the head,” says Anna.

Caramel and Sun boutique owner, Olivia Corsi shows us around her joyful family home in The Lakes

I

f, Goldilocks-like, you happened to stumble upon this four-bedroom house in The Lakes you’d assume the creative mind behind it to be not too serious, plenty of fun, and finessed with just the right amount of style.

Much like her vivacious personality, the inside of Olivia Corsi’s home blends carefree holiday living with Parisian chic. The bright living space features several quirky pieces and a notable homage to palm trees, a fondness which extends to Olivia herself – the mum to Stella (6) and Romy (5) – who is decorated with a solitary palm tree tattoo. “I’ve always been creative,” she explains, “Although I’m not an interior designer by trade, I have a big passion for home décor.”

French-born Olivia moved to Dubai 13 years ago with her Greek husband, Chris.

When she fell pregnant in 2013, the couple moved from JBR into this five-bedroom villa in The Lakes so they would have space to raise a family. Olivia’s previous urban-city style was modified to resonate with their new suburban home, “My taste is always the same, but I like to adapt to the environment I’m in,” says Olivia. “Our apartment was done in a city style, but when we moved to this villa we wanted to recreate a holiday feeling, with light wood and blue tones. So, in terms of the colour palette, I went soft and subtle for that Greek island vibe.” The white flooring plays an integral part of achieving the look and is less expensive than it looks. “Because we are renting I have found low budget ways to create impact – the whitewash floorboards came from Dragon Mart.”

An amalgamation of the couple’s nationalities, Grecian décor is met with subtle tones of Olivia’s Parisian roots. Throughout the home there are select pieces of furniture imported from France and a noticeable dedication to Maison Sarah Lavoine. “As an expat I think you can create a beautiful space with some creativity and time,” she explains. “If you mix your own pieces with something a little more expensive and the essentials from IKEA, you can come up with something not too expensive but interesting.” bhomes.com | 31

HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS “Over the past six months I’ve enjoyed spending time in my house. I would never complain about being stuck at home, as we’re lucky to live in such a beautiful home,” reflects Olivia.

“I really love the light we get here.” Reflecting on the design of her interiors, she says, “You don’t need to have expensive things to feel good, it’s about creating a place you feel good in.”

SPACE TO ENTERTAIN “I am French and my husband’s Greek, so we love food and we love to share,” says Olivia. “So aside from during a global health pandemic there are always people over at our home.”

For this reason, “Having a long table that can fit lots of people around it was important.” For a family that often hosts guests, the space lends itself well to inside-outside social gatherings.

The boutique brand has a shop in Mercarto Mall, along with an online site that sells furniture, toys and offers an in-house interior design service. Stella and Romy benefit from their mum’s day job as their rooms have been crafted as dreamy spaces to play and sleep in. “The tepee bed, light shades and wallpaper all come from my shop but there’s also a mix of IKEA in there – and I am not ashamed to say that!”

Tropical retreat How this garden in The Meadows provides the perfect backdrop for ‘me time’

“M

y garden is a place for me to reflect,” says artist and socialite Lan Stanley through a candid smile. With her dress purposefully matching the tropical tones of her outdoor space, there’s no denying Lan’s appetite for fashion. But as she reclines in the shade of her gazebo, you’re able to catch a glimpse of her unfiltered, relaxed self.

The garden itself spans a large area with a bright blue swimming pool taking centre stage. The supporting act of the show? A huge, vibrantly coloured, bougainvillea bush that contrasts with the tiles beneath the water. Offset to the right, a gazebo adds a holiday feel to the space and its shelter provides the perfect antidote to the hot sun.

Having bought the four-bedroom house with her husband eight years ago, it was important for the mum-ofone to have a garden that the family could unwind in. “I wanted to create as much open space as possible,” Lan explains, “There was a waterfall and sculpture when we moved in, but I removed those and planted more trees.

myself – it took ages!” she laughs, “but it was worth it in the end.” A dab hand with a paint brush, the Vietnameseborn, professional artist (lan-art.com) studied fine art in Hanoy before moving to New York, London, and finally Dubai, showcasing her art as she went.

Lan tells me she painted the lilac painting of a woman (titled Book Memory) whilst in New York. “When I moved to America I couldn’t read as I did in Vietnam as I don’t read English well. So, the painting was to remind myself of my love of books and how I grew up reading,” she explains.

“Most of my paintings are about people,” says Lan, “How they socialise together and all their behaviours – the good and the bad. Having the time and space to reflect is important for my artwork.” It’s clear to see how her simple, yet distinctly tropical feeling garden lends itself well to alfresco unwinding. Along with a host of solar powered lanterns dotted among the bougainvillea, there’s also a solar speaker playing soft classical music.

Palm trees that line the edges of the space afford Lan her desired privacy. “I love my date tree as it attracts a lot of bird life,” Lan enthuses. “We get lots of fruit from it too, so I like to give some away to friends and neighbours.” Growing up in Vietnam, being surrounded by nature has always been important to her. “I had to fill it (the garden) with a lot of greenery as I love nature.”

The green space been a welcome slice of paradise for Lan and husband over the last six months. “It’s been nice to sit back and reflect on what truly matters,” she tells me, sipping on a glass of lemon juice. And with a garden to sit in that feels akin to being in a five-star tropical retreat, it’s clear to see just why Lan looks so very relaxed.

How the launch of Linda’s continues the story of Linda Mahoney’s reshaping of Dubai’s real estate market, one empowered woman at a time

I

n 1986 – long before the Burj Khalifa or Burj al Arab – single mum Linda Mahoney founded Betterhomes from her dining room table, shaping Dubai’s infantile property market through her sheer will and determination to succeed.

Throughout the years, the company has gone from strength to strength, taking it from a five-person start-up business to real-estate empire in the region.

More than three decades on, the Betterhomes Group will launch Linda’s, their latest real-estate venture – named after the woman who started it all – which is set to revolutionise brokerage once again. A community-based agency, it will be run by mums, for mums, with an emphasis on flexibility and family-living. We caught up with Linda Mahoney, and director of Linda’s, Noa Wardman, to hear the full story…

Linda, can you please tell us about your story in Dubai real estate?

My story in real estate started in 1986 when, as a mother of two, I founded Betterhomes. I had been working for a short time in my friend’s real estate company and I enjoyed making a positive impact on the lives of people moving to Dubai. Most people landed with limited knowledge of the place and a lot of anxiety about what to expect, and I loved helping them settle in.

The great feedback I received helped me decide that this was something I wanted to build a serious career in.

The year I established Betterhomes was the year the oil price crashed. Prices fell 75% over a three-week period and many people thought I was mad: ‘Didn’t I know Dubai was over?’ But, undeterred, I saw the opportunity in the chaos and was confident Dubai had a bright future.

It was my opportunity to prove to myself that I could build a business and become independent, even if the timing was terrible and the odds were against us to succeed.

Over the next five years I didn’t take a weekend off or leave Dubai for a vacation.

All I did was work. It was relentless, but I was absolutely focused on building a business, paying my bills and getting Betterhomes to a position of stability. I always felt that one of the key factors in our subsequent success was our culture of outworking our competitors and the fact that we were always focused on the long term. I had no special political connection, no financing, and no portfolio from a sponsor. My team and I loved the fact that we could win against the odds and it created a contagious fighting spirit in the office that gave us a distinct advantage.

Now, almost 35 years since setting up Betterhomes in my dining room in Jumeirah, it gives me great satisfaction to see what we have become. We are always evolving, continually revitalising, and continuing to lead our marketplace while maintaining the values that I started with. and relentless competition. Even after all this time when I go into the office it has the same energy and optimism that we had as a five person start up, and that is a true achievement.

How did the idea for Linda’s come about?

Many working mums in Dubai still struggle to find an environment that offers great career opportunities and the flexibility that their family life requires. So, I recently teamed up with Noa Wardman, who is one of Dubai’s most accomplished brokers and a strong, dynamic mother of two to set up Linda’s Real Estate. Strong women and mothers are the bedrock of any society and they are also some of the most capable brokers in the world. Linda’s will provide the kind of environment in which working mothers (and working fathers) thrive, and will work closely with Betterhomes while remaining an independent company.

I’m proud and delighted to be able to support my fellow women in real estate.

For interested agents, how does Linda’s offering differ to that of Betterhomes?

Betterhomes remains a fantastic environment for women and working parents with strong female leadership throughout the organisation - you can follow their success and achievements throughout all our media. The main difference is that the Linda’s team will be employing more remote-working practices, which offer the greater degree of flexibility that some parents prefer.

What makes Noa right for the role of director?

The idea of launching Linda’s was conceived about 18 months ago, but we knew the key to its success was finding someone who could carry the strength of the brand and the concept, someone who has a proven record of balancing work and family. How this living space in Jumeirah was given an upmarket style haul

hen upsizing to a home in Jumeirah 1, a local client contacted Anu Kewalram from Anu Kewalram Interiors (@akewalram) wanting a style overhaul from her previous home’s look. Wanting to flip the switch on the traditional dark-wood narrative that the family had used for the past decade, the client requested a bright space with limited clutter. With this as her brief, Anu knew that a backdrop of light colour and simple, yet elegant finishings were going to be key.

“I chose to work with neutral tones with a blush pink accent, plus a mixture of metals and marble,” explains Anu. “I used lighter, creamier textures to give an illusion of an open, wider space, while luxurious suedes with practical linen sheers give a warmth to the family room.”

The family which uses the room is made up of three generations, so it was important to Anu that the, “look was suitable for each of the age groups.”

To achieve this, “All the furniture was carefully chosen for its balancing combination of clean straight lines and sophisticated curves,” says Anu. When selecting a patterned wallpaper for the hallways the client was slightly apprehensive, but the risk paid off as, “She couldn’t be happier with the choice of wallpaper,” says Anu. The final touches were used to add a flourish of style to the neutral room. “I added drama to the space with reflective surfaces such as glass, mirrors and metals,” says Anu. The naturally shiny surfaces create dimension as the light bounced between them. Then rugs and art pieces were added to “help draw the space together,” explains Anu, who opted for accessories in gold, cream and marble for the high-end finish the client wanted.

1 Opt for window treatments light in colour as opposed to dark. Choose lighter fabrics with a bit of texture to create a bright and airy space.

2 Choose neutral tones for the sofa and add an accent color in different textures with throw cushions or blankets. It could be any colour of your choice. The best part about using mostly neutrals is that you can update the style of your room just by changing the accessories.

3 Keep the furniture to a minimum. A large 3-seater, a 2-seater, and a pair of armchairs work well in most living rooms. In smaller spaces I suggest using two 2-seaters or a single 3-seater.

4 The more luxurious the fabrics you use, the classier the space becomes. I like suede as it gives a room an opulent feel.

5 Using metal and glass can add interest to your design. Glass and mirrors have reflective properties and throw light around an area, which expands the space. Lustrous metals and other shiny surfaces add drama and definition.

And when used in rounded forms (such as in circular tables and lamps) they soften the overall aesthetic.
