Welcome to the issue I’ve always found September’s air to be pregnant with prospect, particularly here in the UAE. The streets — and ok, rather annoyingly, the roads — fill up again with the lucky people who spent their summer abroad. The new term brings excitement for kids (and most certainly their parents), while the cooler weather brings a barrage of social invitations. This issue we’ve been inspired by the buzz of new beginnings, whether that’s gathering this year’s cutest back-to-school supplies (page 13) or planting the seeds for next year’s harvest (page 46). We also find out how popular food blogger Lady Spatula turned her dream home into reality (34) and meet two new designers on the scene — Grammatiki (page 42) and Waad (page 50) — to talk about their latest projects. Wishing you an exciting couple of months ahead. Sophia Dyer Deputy Editor Visit us at blivinguae.com and follow us on Instagram at @blivinguae

Jewel tones

This autumn, it’s all about giving your home a royal upgrade in time for the festive season. From sapphire blue to ruby red, vibrant gemstone hues will instantly ramp up the drama in a space. They work well in an analogue colour scheme (three shades next to each other in the colour wheel). You can’t go wrong with using jewel tones on luxurious fabric such as velvet, but they work just as well on the wall, especially when paired with similar shades. Furniture Land

Fall 2021 outdoor colour trends from Ethan Allen MELLOW YELLOW

Yellow is the colour of optimism and a beautiful way to add a bit of cheer to your outdoor space. Being one of Pantone’s colours of the year, it’s bang on trend, particularly as we head back outdoors again. Use it with a touch of black in a garden that is looking a bit lacklustre for a bright and eye-catching effect that will look good year-round.

CLEAN WHITE

White is a popular and neutral colour that works well with other accent shades to make your garden look fresh and inviting. Although it’s a bright colour, it balances well with the sunlight. We recommend it for simple, yet effective decorating. Sometimes all you need to do is offer a hint of white and any other neutral colour for maximum impression. For a classic and timeless look, try using white as your base shade with blue accents, perhaps in a striped umbrella or throw.

DARK BLACK

You can never go wrong with black. It’s a sleek and stylish shade that goes with everything. It just looks high-end. Pair black metal outdoor furniture with any monochromatic colour for an instantly upgraded look to your outdoor living space — no matter your personal taste and styling.

UN DIMANCHE À PARIS

CELEBRATING 30 YEARS IN THE UAE

Where French ambiance meets modernity, Un Dimanche à Paris on Bluewaters Island balances simplicity with elegance. We were inspired by the intricate details on the ceiling and delicate petal garlands that set a stylish tone. The uncomplicated furniture leaves space for the ceiling and Parisian food to shine, while the colour scheme pays homage to the restaurant’s flagship in SaintGermain-des-Prés and the owner, chocolatier Pierre Cluizel. For inspiring French fare (including pastries in the cafe on the ground floor) and interesting ceiling design, we recommend you pay a visit. un-dimanche-a-paris.ae

Introducing Made-to-Order, West Elm’s bespoke furniture service

Better Living x WEST ELM

H

ave you spent weeks deliberating between sofas, because even though the shape is right, the colour is just slightly off? And although you’ve tracked down an armchair in the perfect shade, it’s just not the right size for your bedroom? You’re not alone. Finding furniture that is ‘just right’ is not an easy task. But here to help, by revolutionising the way that we shop is West Elm’s new ‘Made to Order’ service. Allowing customisation of their, already stylish furniture, Made to Order is bespoke furniture, made simple. HOW DOES IT WORK? Begin by choosing an armchair, sofa or sectional that you like the shape of, then work with the in-house The Design Crew to create the perfect piece for your space. The specialists will help you pick from over 20 different fabric options and can even create a digital mock-up of the room you’re hoping to buy for, so you can see it in action before you purchase. As a brand, West Elm is known for their trend-conscious pieces that draw inspiration from classic design, while adding a distinctive modern touch. Consequently, their collections are contemporary, but have each been derived from styles set to stand the test of time. Adding to their longevity, each item of furniture is crafted from high quality fabrics that have been ethically sourced. Allowing customers to elevate their home’s look and style, The Design Crew use their expertise to advise

on fabric, design, and layout. Sitting down to a private meeting with a member of the crew, customers are able to create bespoke items drawing inspiration from the range, meaning that complete customisation is both possible, and encouraged. Passionate about illustrating individual stories through objects, and providing a unique service when it comes to homeware shopping, The Design Crew also advise customers on how to dress and arrange the items at home. The team of interior stylists are on hand to help you select the right style, item and finish for your home. Home really is where the heart is, which is why West Elm believes it’s particularly important to spend time creating a space that speaks to our individuality. Double trouble If you’re thinking about co-sleeping your children, here’s what to consider when it comes to design

F

or parents deliberating the decision to put their kids in the same room, it may be surprising to learn that solitary sleeping is a rather modern phenomenon, especially when it comes to young children. Experts, such as Professor Benjamin Reiss, author of the book Wild Nights: How Taming Sleep Created our Restless World, suggests there has been a negative impact in family bonding since the move away from co-sleeping happened at the turn of the 20th century. So, if you’re interested in creating a space that two or more of your children can share, here’s how...

Beds

Begin with deciding on how you’ll arrange the bed configuration. Depending on the age of your children, you might want to consider utilising the vertical space in the room with bunk or cabin beds. “Select the position of your

16 | bhomes.com

beds before starting the design,” says interior stylist, Elena Danici (@3.54_ three.fifty.four) who is famous for her quirky kids’ rooms designs. “Try and arrange beds in a way that gives each child their own space,” recommends Suellyn Reat from Duck Lane Interior Design (@ducklandinteriordesign). “If the space is restricted, then bunk beds could be the answer. Try an L shape with a shared play/storage area in the middle. Or, perhaps a raised bed with each child having their own space underneath.”

Room layout

“In a shared bedroom, space management and zoning is important,” says Elena. “You need to ensure that each sibling will have sufficient space for beds, desk areas and for their own hobbies.” You can use the position of furniture to create a separation in the room, Suellyn reccomends, “placing a

nightstand between two beds as that way each child has their own light, which will give them some personal space”. Sarrah and Huma from The Styling Duo (thestylingduo.ae) suggest keeping “basic elements accessible and then showcasing any visual design at the level of the kids, where they can enjoy being in their comfort zone.”

Storage

When you’ve got two or more little ones in a room, having ample storage is key to being able to keep it tidy. Even if your children are close in age it’s a good idea to give them each a place, whether that be a wardrobe, chest of drawers, or toy box, to keep their own things in. You can also consider including it within your choice of beds, like Suellyn did. “Storage was maximised by creating drawers in each stair as well as underneath the two bottom beds, and a toybox was added to the top bunk,” she explains.

kid’s rooms | INSPIRATION

Elena Danici (@3.45_three.fifty.four)

Room divider

If you’ve got slightly older kids, providing some form of privacy is advisable. Try to create a private space for each child by giving each one their own bed. “To avoid the costs of remodelling, use an affordable solution such as curtains to divide the room,” says Nahel Selo, creative director at Sedar Global (sedarglobal. com). If you’ve got plenty of space and budget then, “you can divide a space using automated folding doors which are durable and super easy to operate. These are easy-to-install alternatives to allow privacy, accommodate different sleeping schedules, and even to divide play, study or sleep elements within a shared room.”

Decoration

“Go neutral,” says Elena. “Not bland, but a solid neutral base from which you can adjust the colour scheme or theme with the accessories. Think graphical, black and white, repetitive patterns,” advises the creative mum. “If the kids sharing the room are of different genders, don’t be afraid to mix ‘his’ and ‘hers’ accessories,” suggests Elena. On the other hand, Nahel recommends, “parting the room 50:50, so your kids have an equal allowance to embrace a bit of interior design.” The Styling Duo say the most important factor is, “adding colour! Bright colours are the way to add fun into any kid’s rooms.”

Tip

GO FOR MUTED COLOURS ON THE WALLS AS THAT WILL KEEP THE AREA FEELING SPACIOUS. YOU CAN THEN USE ACCESSORIES AND TOYS TO MAKE THE ROOM FEEL YOUTHFUL The Styling Duo (thestylingduo.ae)

How to master...

Chinoiserie Interior designer Victoria Cronin (@ victoriacroninstudio) talks us through oriental styling

WHAT IS IT? A typical Chinoiserie style depicts colourful scenes from far flung exotic places. However, Chinoiserie did not come from any Eastern or Asian country, but is in fact a Western interpretation of traditional oriental arts. In most cases the imagery is a western preconception and idyllic stereotype of oriental imagery. ABOUT THE STYLE First gaining popularity in Europe during the 18th century, when expanded trade with East Asia and China enabled better access to new cultures, these exotic places remained a fascination to many Europeans; this air of mysticism further increased the popularity and desirability of the style. During the 18th century, Europeans began to manufacture Chinese-style lacquered

furniture (Chippendale). Wallpaper became increasingly popular and featured imitation patterns such as pagodas, floral and exotic designs.

Feathr (feathr.com) Niche Corner The Bowery Company

Be brave. Go for it with colour and use patterns boldly. If you’re nervous about wallpaper, try a framed piece of chinoiserie artwork or a bold pattern on a smaller upholstered piece, such as an armchair or cushions. When I’m on the hunt for Chinoiserie style in particular, I often start with wall coverings and fabric. De Gournay provides hand-painted silk wallcoverings. Don’t be a slave to the style. Take bits and pieces from the genre and mix it with contemporary items to form an eclectic style that suits modern living. Be authentic by only selecting items that you personally love. And be generous with greenery and plants – exotica is also about nature. Within my studio I have produced a range of artwork and prints inspired by Chinoiserie which are perfect to accessorise any timeless oriental inspired interior. Items with stories to tell. Paper perfect Wallpaper is here to stay, here’s how to do it like a pro

22 | blivinguae.com

trends | INSPIRATION

W

e’re not sure whether to say wallpaper is ‘back’, because it doesn’t really feel like it ever left. While minimal walls certainly had their day, for the last twenty years, walls adorned with maximalist prints have played a key role in many of this century’s notable designs. With printing techniques and finishes continually developing, wallpaper is now easier to apply (and remove) giving you permission to have fun. Still afraid of the commitment? Interior designer Nikki Bisiker (@

nikkibisikerinteriordesign) gives us the wallpaper low down: DECIDE ON THE ROLE OF YOUR PAPER Is the wallpaper location in the room going to be the rockstar, or just the chorus? Is it taking precedence, or is it quietly enhancing the scene as a backdrop and letting a piece of furniture show off? You could have a contemporary or antique piece of furniture which is the star of the show in your mind. And a bold print behind could accentuate it rather

TIP Love a print but don’t want it on the wall? Use it to line drawers, buffet cabinets or internal closets

TIP Any left over wallpaper after hanging can be used for wrapping gifts, so it’s not wasted

than distract, particularly if you pick up relevant colours. SIZE IT UP Ask yourself how you want to feel in your space. If you’re looking to make a large room cosier, using a large pattern will visually reduce the size of the room. But if you want a smaller room to look bigger, go for a delicate, smaller printed pattern. Use wallpaper on the ceiling. For those with particular design-gusto, a papered ceiling is a great way to add interest, especially on the high ones that we have in the UAE. You can also use it as an insert for any recessed ceilings. In terms of prints, I suggest black and white stripes, coloured graphics, or florals for a dynamic look. Afraid of commitment? Let go of the idea that it has to be long term. If you know what you’re doing, it doesn’t have to be. Make sure you are aware of the backing – woven or non-woven. The woven options are more expensive, but easier to remove, where as paperbacked ones are less expensive but a chore to take down. If you’re papering a recess or a partial wall, that can be easily replaced to change the feel of the room in a very short space of time. (No) strings attached. If you’re drawn to bold prints but you’re equally concerned that they’ll drift out of fashion, consider turning the paper into a piece of art. Do this by buying a roll and a piece of thin foam to place on the back to make it sturdy, then put

24 | blivinguae.com

a section of the print in an elegant frame. Not only is this a cost-effective way to bring patterns in, but it’s ideal if you tend to move house often, as you’re able to bring it with you! Use it to transform furniture. Remember the wallpaper lining your grandma’s drawers? Using paper on furniture is still a great way to customise it. Try using it on top of plain wooden side tables and then topping them with glass to transform the item. Plain paper might look a bit

shabby, so use bold patterns to create a sense of drama that will leave it looking polished. Consult the professionals. Even if you think you can work it out yourself, it’s always best to have a professional come and measure up and assess the quantity you’ll need before you buy. Do your research when it comes to hiring someone to hang the paper, and ensure your walls are professionally prepared beforehand to ensure a smooth and even surface.

A SK THE EXPERT

What is Middle Eastern interior design and how can I use it in my home? Mona Ramzy, co-founder and co-head of design at Talata boutique, (@talata_design) explores Arabesque style Middle Eastern design is an amalgamation of styles that developed from the various cultures in the region. Starting with the ancient civilisations of Egypt and Mesopotamia, to the ones that derived from Western invasions, it’s this blend of cultures that has led to a unique Arabesque style. When an ancient focus on architecture met the Western blend of comfort and contemporary it created a very particular look, one where you have modern living combined with art, colour, history, and heritage. Use handmade items in your home. Arabs have always had a lot of passion for artisanal items and appreciation for craftmanship. Middle Eastern design tells the story of our heritage, and if you’re using handcrafted items you’re showcasing the story of someone who worked on the product to become a piece of art. Craftmanship isn’t dead and it gives off warmth due to the passion that has gone into it, so having those items in your home will certainly enrich your life. We’re blessed with multiculturalism here, so you can find many great products and brands in the UAE. There’s been a big design revolution with items coming from Syria, North Africa and Egypt which, by essence, create an Arabesque feel in the home. I also recommend talking to Middle Eastern interior designers, as they know where to shop and they will consider how you live before choosing the right pieces. It’s about using pattern. From the intricate ones that have derived from Islamic geometry, to

the Ancient Egyptian prints that contributed heavily to the Art Deco movement, pick a style that works for you. If you’re all about elegance, embrace the Deco style patterns on your furniture. Or if you prefer a more casual look, use geometric prints on your soft furnishings. Patterns work especially well outside in vibrant blues, reds, and oranges on cushions, mosaics, tiles, and pottery. Use local materials. In the Middle East we tend to see natural materials such as limestone and marble used as the base of a space, and this works as it complements the geographical location. I also like to use limestone, cement, and local woods in my designs. Mother of pearl is amazing and adds a huge Eastern touch - at Talata we use it in bars, dining tables and sideboards. In Middle Eastern culture, layout is important. We invite friends and family over as part of our daily life so when it comes to the layout of our home, we focus on having an open space to entertain, along with a big dining table to eat at. If you’re taking a Middle Eastern design into account in your space, make sure to have plenty of seating and a sideboard beside the dining table to serve food from. Even if you don’t have huge space, you can still create a living area that functions for you as a family and for when you host guests. Do this by putting in a couple of sofas and armchairs that work for everyday living, as well as for seating plenty of guests.

How foodie-blogger Lady Spatula turned her dream Pinterest home into a reality

blivinguae.com | 35

“I

've always been obsessed with Pinterest,” says Suad Shamma, blogger and mum of two. “I had all these (Pinterest) boards since way before I was married, of, you know, how I envisioned my family home to look.” And much like her perfectly styled recipe shots on her popular Instagram and blog (@ladyspatula), Suad’s home is well considered throughout and snap-ready for social media Born in Abu Dhabi, Suad and her husband made the move from to Dubai in 2019. With two children in tow, Hamza (5) and Layla (4), they set about finding the perfect community to raise their family in. “We wanted to invest in a place that our kids could call home and grow up in. I wanted to find the right place that they’d remember when they’re older,” explains the Palestinian mum. After looking around several areas, it was Green Community that they settled on. And though the verdant nature of the mature community was an instant drawcard, the yellow and red hues of the villa’s interiors were not. “There were horrendous red tiles everywhere and all the walls were painted yellow!” she exclaims. But the Pinterester within could see potential, “there was just so much space, so I knew there was loads I could do. I told my husband that I will only live here on one condition - that we renovate the whole thing!” she laughs. “He said, ‘it’s yours’”. Enlisting the help of Valentina Piscopo from KUKY Designs (kuky-design. com), the mum-of-two set to work on materialising her dream family home. Suad replaced the offending red tiles with beige counterparts downstairs, and laid inviting parquet flooring upstairs. “I knew the upstairs was going to be our family space, so I wanted to make it really homey and cosy,” she explains. After the flooring makeover, “the next step was to paint everything white.” Meaning literally everything, the young mum explains: “we painted the walls, doors, stair banister, everything! All corners of the house were white.” Once a blank slate had been established, it was time for Suad to add her social mediaworthy touch.

THE FORMAL LIVING AREA Downstairs there’s a calm ambience with a palette of mint, baby blue and beige that was achieved with a touch of upcycling. “I wanted a modern look, but I needed to work with the furniture I already had, because we were spending so much basically destroying the house! I renovated items by painting or reupholstering them to make them seem new, or to give them a different touch. We’ve had friends who we’ve known for years ask if we’ve got new furniture, even though they’d seen it all a hundred times before!” Using rugs to create areas within the space and natural, rustic looking accessories, the beachy theme was complete.

KIDS' ROOM “I wanted my kids to share a room, at least for the first few years of their lives so that they would build that sibling bond,” explains Suad, “And I knew I wanted a bunk bed with a slide, it was just one of those things that I’d always loved on Pinterest!” Valentina suggested that they get the bed custom-made as it would be cheaper than buying one readymade. “It was perfect because we designed it so that the lower bunk was just an inch from the ground to avoid any accidents!”

PLAYROOM Continuing the funky wallpaper theme in here, the playroom has a cool black and white print across one wall, with a yellow shelving unit to add a playful contrast. “We used a lot of furniture we already owned and added fun accessories and colours,” Suad explains. “When you walk in there’s this humongous rattan chandelier hanging down. It makes a huge difference, changing the appearance of the room to make it look bigger.”

FAMILY ROOM “As soon as I walked into this room, I knew exactly how I wanted it to look – it just really hit me!” After a eureka moment sparked the idea for a dark brown couch, Suad worked with Valentina to find the right fabric. “I didn’t want leather because it heats up really quickly, but I did need something durable because of the children. Finding the right shade in a faux-velvet, Suad reupholstered an old sofa in her vision. Using wallpaper to split the room, the TV snug and desk area has been separated without physical divisions, which works to achieve a light and spacious feel.

THE LIBRARY “I’ve loved reading since I was a child,” explains Suad, on her impressive library of books. “Every allowance I received went into buying books and my collection just continued to grow. When I got married, I started packing up all my books to take with me and my dad was going nuts! But I remained firm, that my books should go where I go,” says the bookworm. “It’s always been my dream to have one room filled with floor-to-ceiling shelves for books, so when I saw this room downstairs I told my husband that this was going to be my library! He thought it should be a guest room, so we had to compromise and make it a bit of both,” Suad explains, looking over at the IKEA day-bed that sleeps any guests. “But, for me, the priority was always the books! I wanted a ladder on the bookshelf, like the one from Beauty and the Beast!" We must admit, the library wall definitely adds a magical touch.

From my point of view Inside the mind of architect Grammatiki Zamani, who designed this Qasr Al Watanfacing garden pergola in Abu Dhabi

H

ow do you make the most of an envious garden view? Enlist the help of architect Grammatiki Zamani to design you a weatherproof viewing platform, deliberately set at the perfect angle for watching the sun go down. “The family wanted a relaxed lounge to enjoy the view and to bring in a touch of the Mediterranean,” explains Grammatiki, who has a notably elegant and poised demeanour that somehow conveys her artistic skill. Originally from Greece, where she trained and worked as an architect, Grammatiki set up kiklos Architects (kiklosarchitects.com) with her

husband, Leonardo in 2020 – mid – pandemic. It’s an all-encompassing studio, with a USP of architectural expertise that enables Grammatiki to design a space from concept to finish. “My studies as an engineer give me the opportunity to go deeper into the construction,” she explains. “We have done renovations that have only left the structure of the building, and we literally rebuilt the walls to separate the space. Of course, then we chose the materials to cover the walls and the floors, before choosing the furniture, designing most of them ourselves.” After sitting with kiklos Architects for a few minutes you quickly

realise that for them, it’s about more than designing nice spaces to look at. “Designing is not just about getting nice pictures,” Grammatiki passionately explains. “Your main priority should be to serve the user’s needs. That’s what makes it different from pure art. Art doesn’t have to have functionality, but architecture is an art form that must function.” Grammatiki’s practical design philosophy is evident in the way they approached and executed the pergola project. “Because the sun is very strong next to the sea, we wanted to break the continuous surface of the tiles to lessen the reflection of light.

THE PERGOLA WAS CREATED TO BE A VIEWING PLATFORM OVER THE GARDEN’S PARTICULARLY SPECTACULAR ARABIAN GULF VISTA. THE SEATING AREA IS INTENTIONALLY ANGLED FOR WATCHING THE SUNSET.

44 | blivinguae.com

Designing is not just about getting nice pictures. Your main priority should be to serve the user’s needs

So, we put spaces between the tiles and used a rough material to help keep the temperature low and the reflections to a minimum.” From the smaller details to the larger ones, each has been well thought out. “The orientation of the pergola has to do with the sunset. It sets on the right, so that’s why we positioned the sofa as we did.” Her attention to detail and function even extends to the fabrics of the items. “Everything is really weatherproof,” Grammatiki explains. “Concrete is a good material. It really is the material to use outdoors here. Anything else, no matter how good quality it is, doesn’t last very long because of the very harsh weather conditions. And, concrete is more sustainable because it may end up lasting at least 10 years.” Starting a concrete revolution, Grammatiki has launched her own collection of concrete tables made in the UAE. Named ‘kiklos by Grammatiki Zamani’ they were inspired, in shape and colour, by traditional Greek architecture. Bringing something unique to the market, the tables are made from Glass Fibre Reinforced Concrete (GFRC) to withstand high heat. “Having followed the modern movement in architecture, I love concrete as a material, because you can literally mould it into anything. It has so much potential,” she explains. And while we agree that concrete tables are tapping into a need, it’s most definitely Grammatiki’s considered approach to design and attention to detail that has us excited for what’s to come from kiklos Architects. blivinguae.com | 45

Grow your own

Join the growing number of UAE residents harvesting their own organic food at home

I

t’s no secret that most of the food we eat in the UAE has been imported, which makes sense seeing as we live in a desert, right? Not necessarily. The past few years have seen the ‘grow your own’ movement gather momentum, as both local farms and residents have been harvesting more produce. The temperate winter months mean that the UAE has one of the longest growing seasons in the world, and getting it right is easier than you might think. We caught up with some of those leading the movement to hear their advice for beginners:

Find the right spot

“The first step when it comes to growing your own food is to choose the right location for the garden,” says Mohammed Al Dhuhouri from Local Roots UAE (localrootsuae.com). “Most vegetables require at least four hours of sunlight to thrive, so your intended growing area should have that amount of sunlight to be successful.” Nasser

Rego Co-founder of SoWeGrow (sowegrow.com), who offers gardening courses on food in the UAE suggests, “Using shade-netting when growing in the sunlight.”

Select your crops

“As we have such a long growing season in the UAE, in comparison to other countries, it means that we can grow all sorts of produce,” says Mohammed. Year-round sunshine means there’s “opportunity to grow throughout the year, particularly those typical summer plants such as tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, okra and cucumbers”, says gardening vlogger and Instagrammer Rachel Wright, known as The Homegrown Gardener (@the_homegrown_ gardener). “In the cooler months you can grow a larger variety, including squash, melons, and beans, as well as leafy greens such as kale, swiss chard, bok choy, rocket and whatever else takes your fancy.”

The Homegrown Gardener

Tip

WHEN PLANTING, TRY TO COLLECT SEEDS OF PLANTS THAT HAVE BEEN GROWN IN THE UAE, THAT WAY THE PLANT WILL BE USED TO THE HEAT

blivinguae.com | 47

Get planting

“In general, most varieties will do ok from October to April,” says Rachel, “but I like to start my tomatoes, peppers and eggplant seeds inside towards the end of summer.” When the weather starts to cool down and the humidity decreases, “harden your seedlings by putting them outside for an hour or so in the morning, or evening. By October, they should be ready to plant outside into pots or directly into the ground. Late winter is another great time to start seeds, giving them several months to grow and produce food before the peak of summer.”

Don’t forget to compost

“The aim of composting is twofold.” says Nasser, “Fresh, homemade compost is one of the best foods you can give your plants. Composting also means recycling the waste from the products that we consume. By composting, things aren‘t ending up in landfill and there‘s actually an alchemy of rebirth happening. We put our waste together in particular portions and what comes out is one of the best foods to feed our plants, bringing new life about.” So how do you compost? “It’s about getting the right mix of greens (fresh leaves, food waste, coffee grounds) and browns (dried leaves, twigs, woodchips). The mix is 3:1 in favour of greens. It‘s about keeping the mixture moist

Leon and Nasser Rego from So We Grow

(but not soaking wet) – think of a well-wrung sponge. Stir the mix often enough, and in two-to-three months you‘ll have the sweet smelling, soft brown/black material called compost!” explains Nasser.

Companion planting

Being strategic with which plants you put beside each other means you can maximise the growth. For example, tomatoes flourish when situated next to basil or parsley, “the vibrant basil herb repells pests, such as whiteflies and hornworms, and improves the tomatoes yield,” says Rachel. “On the other hand, there are some veggies which are not compatible when planting together,” explains Mohammed. “With both potatoes and cucumbers being ‘heavy feeders’, they

will compete against each other for the same nutrients and water. Also, cucumbers may increase the chances of the potatoes to catch a disease called blight.”

Caring for your plants

“Plants need proper care, from the right amount of water and the ideal quality of soil and temperature control, to the right amount of organic fertiliser,” says Vishal, co-founder of Big Farm Brothers, an organic food distributor based in Dubai. “Having a regular watering schedule is important, as is making sure you water the soil, rather than the plants themselves,” adds Rachel. “Vegetables that are growing outside should be watered every one to two days. Good air circulation can also help prevent plant diseases,” she adds.

Avoiding pests

“Healthy plants are more resistant to disease because they have stronger cell walls,” says Nasser, “therefore it is important to keep your plant happy, by growing it in healthy soil.” For keeping bugs at bay there are several natural options you can use. “Neem oil is commonly available,” says Vishal. “Garlic and pepper spray is easy to make at home we advise to stay away from chemical-driven products which are harmful for plants.” “You can buy fertilisers enriched with neem, and in a small garden it is possible to do a visual scan to pick the bad guys off!” says Rachel.

A story of new heights How interior designer Waad Kansou from DoubleYouInteriors (@doubleyouinteriors) transformed this DIFC duplex

“M

y client wanted a space that is super cosy and warm. She was also dreaming of a library to show all her books.” Understanding the brief, and taking it to the next level, this luxury duplex in DIFC was designed by Waad Kansou, founder of DoubleYouInteriors (@doubleyouinteriors). Sat on the 27th floor, the duplex apartment has an open plan living room downstairs, two bedrooms upstairs, and a showstopping two-storey bookshelf acting as a visual and physical anchor. “Designing a small space gives way to even more innovation,” explains Waad, who is a trained architect from Lebanon. “The kitchen ticks so many 2021 trends. Designing a 'nokitchen' kitchen concept integrated within the library wall when trying to create a flawless space was a challenge.” Waad managed to make it seamless with the rest of the apartment “With the cooking area concealed, it allows the focus to be on entertaining.” Storage was also an important consideration in the design: “As much as it looks minimal and luxurious, it is so practical and functional," explains the self-employed interior designer. There are pocket doors to hide the small appliances, while ensuring they remain always reachable. There’s a big laundry area in the corner, pull-out units, and a pantry to have all the food goods stored in one place,” . With a leaning towards Art Deco and Scandinavian design, the client asked her interior designer to create a stylish home in which she could entertain. “The unique feature of this project is its mixture of wood with accent furniture,” says Waad. “From a six-metre-high wooden library that is packed with books and styled with beautiful accessories, to two sleek teal armchairs that set the tone for the living room, complemented by a threeseater taupe sofa from Arketipo.”

With luxury on the agenda, Waad’s product choices followed suit with a feathery theme. “The lighting from Cameron Design House was inspired by nature and consists of individually handcrafted wooden fin-pieces that overlay like feathers on a bird. The natural material brings an earthy touch, perfectly suited for a casual, relaxing environment. And speaking of feathers," says the designer, "we chose a beautifully hand knotted carpet designed by Maarten De Ceulaer from his feathers collection, to be hung on the staircase wall facing the library.” Continuing with the bird theme, “we sourced the flying duck cushions from Mulberry Home to match with the carpet, and it was so inspiring that we purchased the same print as a wallpaper for the dining room.” After hanging the wallpaper, the bird-design evolution continued as, “we chose a Wing designed by Marcantonio for Seletti, as a fruit bowl on the dining table. For the artwork, there are two big art prints, one of them is the Birds of America by John James Audubon.” Finally, the bird theme is cemented in the glamourous details, “We even thought about the very tiny details and included walnut bird objects on the different shelves of the library THE VERDICT and between the books.” "Working with Waad has The overall effect that Waad been a joy through and has conjured is a balance between through. Her process is old-time traditions and modern professional and puts you execution. Her use of traditional at ease, and her taste is materials and modern trends means impeccable – she really gets the home feels old-money-wellto know your style." made, yet fun and fresh. And it's in her brilliant use of space that the newcomer interior designer really makes her mark on Dubai’s design scene.

Create traditional glamour Waad Kansou shares her tips for achieving a highend feel that won't age 1 Select lots of warm tones and don’t be afraid of using lots of wood, even if it seems old-fashioned. Combine the material with a light-coloured marble floor to create balance. 2 Pick furniture pieces with bold colours. They will pop in the space and make a statement. 3 Think outside of the box and dare to hang a carpet on the wall. If it’s a beautiful carpet then I think it deserves to be looked at, not just stepped on. 4 Design a kitchen that is not only for cooking! Try to make it part of the show by using similar colours to the rest of the room and, of course, by adding luxury finishes. 5 The wow-factor is in the details. Accessories play a huge role in the overall look of a home. They can add a lot of glamour, so I’d recommend investing in them.
