Welcome to the issue

Is it just us, or do things seem to, well, dry up over the summer? Whether it’s social plans, home projects or our previously green gardens, this season can sometimes feel a little lacklustre. But this year, we’ve been inspired by Will Bennet of WILDEN’s approach to embracing the heat (page 34), so we’ve decided make the most of the summer. Whether that’s by using bright colours in the home (page 24), swotting up on social media design trends (page 18) or bringing a touch of the Med into our kitchens (page 38). And actually, our cover star Kristi Georgakopoulos shows us that design inspiration can, quite literally, be waiting around every corner. So don’t feel disheartened by the temperature, let us help to find your next project idea that’ll keep you busy until cooler winds blow on by. RUMBA, CUBAN BAR & KITCHEN Fans of all things old-time Cuban, should head down to new restaurant Rumba Cuban Bar & Kitchen on The Palm. The interiors were designed by Colombian-born artist Jose Luis Quinceno and they pay homage to 1950s colonial Cuba. “We wanted the guests to be transported to the old streets of Cuba and feel the Hispanic atmosphere throughout the property,” explains Jose. The restaurant certainly has a buzzing feel to it, with a cigar lounge, ceviche bar and Cuban soundtrack setting an authentic tone. Plus, the food is delicious too. rumba.ae

Better Living x IDEAL STANDARD

Three-ways Ideal Standard is shaping the modern bathroom From slick colourways, to digital events, we take a look at Ideal Standard’s 360 approach to design

H

elmed in Belgium, Ideal Standard has been innovating for the last 100 years. Anyone who knows anything about bathroom design, will know that the brand prides itself on crafting modern design with forward-thinking technology. This year has proved no exception for the sanitary-ware company who has used the pandemic to springboard new product designs and interesting ways of interacting with its client base. Here’s a look at the exciting ways that they’re keeping things fresh in 2021:

SILK BLACK Ideal Standard is a pioneering brand when it comes to adding an element of design into a room that has

historically been devoid of colour, or flair. A new finish for this year, silk black is a colourway that makes a bold statement. Elevating a bathroom from a purely functional room to one with just as much style as the rest of the home. The finish can be applied to fittings, ceramics, accessories and furniture, so that you’re able to craft a space with serious design waves. INTELLIMIX An award-winning tap born from the increased need for hygiene, the Intellimix tap is a sterile solution designed for public spaces. A digital tap, with an in-built screen, it dispenses both soap and water via a sensor, so that no touching is required. Bluetooth enabled, the tap’s settings, such as how long the water should flow, can be easily adjusted through an app which also sends notifications when it’s time for a maintenance flush. And while the optimal amount of soap and water is assured each time, it actually uses less soap and water than you would manually, making it kinder on the environment.

TOGETHER WORLD TOUR SERIES Combining design, art and architecture, Ideal Standard is changing the game by unveiling their new products for the year through an online and physical event series around the world. The unique concept has captured the attention of the global design community through cinematic videos that combine culture and lifestyle with stylish products. Starting in Milan, they unveiled the Linda-X collection, inspired by their 1977 range by the same name. Later this year, the online unveilings will pass through London, Paris, Dubai and Shanghai, releasing new products as they go. idealstandardgulf.com blivinguae.com | 9

Better Living X SMART RENOVATION

Q A

Which renovation adds the most value to a home in the UAE? The most value we’ve added through renovation is when we’ve changed the floor plan of a property to make it entirely more liveable. Although, I do believe that when potential buyers are looking around a home that already has a renovated kitchen, they become more motivated, and then if they then discover it also has a modern bathroom, the property is likely to be sold.

Q A

How can I make sure my home fit-out project runs smoothly? Start by getting the right people on your team. Working with specialists, whom you can trust really helps the process. Builders, architects, plumbers, electricians, the list of experts required in a major renovation goes on! Like a finely tuned restaurant team serving up award winning dishes, making sure you’ve got the right tradesperson, is in the right place, doing the right thing, at exactly the right time, is imperative for a smooth and efficient renovation.

Q A

Is it important to hire an interior designer when renovating? If your car breaks, you take it to a mechanic at the garage and pay for their advice that has come from their years of experience. The same should apply when approaching your home’s interior fit-out and design. When someone has spent a lot of time honing a craft, they know what they’re talking about and can help to produce expert results.

Q A

Which room is the most cost effective to renovate for the most reward? Everybody knows that the kitchen is the heart of the home – often in both feeling and floorplan – that’s why putting it to the top of your ‘to renovate’ list is a smart idea. Modernising the typical dark wood found in the UAE breathes new life into the home, which is particularly attractive to buyers when you come to sell. Installing newer appliances into the design of your

Ask Marco and Cinzia The brains behind Smart Renovation (smartrenovation.ae) answer your questions

Q A

Do all home upgrades add value? Yes, but only if you use high quality materials that will stand the test of time. If you’re not able to spend to get a renovation done to a decent standard, it could be a better idea to make surface level decoration changes instead because material is key when it comes to adding value.

Q A kitchen will also improve the overall worth of your home. You don’t have to spend a fortune either, it’s more about the way the kitchen functions, than the price of the cabinets you choose.

Q A

What should I be considering when approaching a renovation project? Your mood is greatly affected by the way your home looks and feels. So make sure you and your renovation team are designing spaces with your family’s happiness in mind. Whether that’s a layout choice, like having an open plan kitchen so that you’re never too far away from each other, or by choosing uplifting decoration that puts a smile on your face. Your interior fitout consultants should be able to advise you on ways to improve the feeling in your home.

Are swimming pools worth the investment? Yes, if you’ve got the money to invest. It’s an expensive job as they require strong technical skill. We often see low price jobs which then create huge problems in the future. So, if you are going to put in a pool, go for a reputable company and don’t be tempted by low quotations, that way you’ll be adding value to your property, rather than decreasing it.

Q A

How have renovations shifted over the last year? The pandemic taught us about being clever with the spaces we already have, even if you don’t have lots of square footage to play with, you can double up the use of rooms. For example, guest bedrooms are getting far less love now than they were a couple of years ago, so we say don’t waste the space. Instead, install an built-in table that can be used as a desk for home schooling and then transition into a dressing table when you’re hosting again. blivinguae.com | 11

Tile me happy

T

Interesting ways to use tiles in your home

hought to have originated in Ancient Egypt, decorative tiles have been used in interior design since around 4000 B.C.E. Starting as an ornate way to adorn floors and walls, it was after the Industrial Revolution that the tile was recognised for its hygenic credentials and became commonplace in residential and commercial properties. The 21st century has seen digitally printed and manufactured tiles joining their ceramic counterparts as both practical and decorative features in our homes. We caught up with two tiling experts to learn of their favourite ways of using this decorative tool in the home:

Zone out a large room

“I like to create a living room zone, by designing a feature wall of tiles,” says Georgia Ezra from Tiles of Ezra (tilesofezra.com). “Do this by tiling the front face of your fireplace or behind your TV from floor to ceiling. As the centre of the room, it will make the room appear bigger and

12 | blivinguae.com

will give provide an amazing area to lounge in.” If you’ve got an open space, tiled flooring can be a great way to distinguish between areas, especially if you’re also able to add some contrasting wood.

Create a feature wall

Tiles are the perfect solution for creating an accent wall in any room of the home. “If you’re creating a tiled feature wall you need to define the end points clearly, so lining them up with the joinery can be a good idea. It’s important to properly plan where the tiles will start and end so that the space will make sense visually and not look incomplete,” says Georgia. “Chevron or herringbone patterns work well when you’re creating a feature with tiles,” advises Nadia Tareen from Tareen Interiors (tareeninteriors.com).

Bathroom

“What you see at eye level when you walk into a bathroom is really important,” says Georgia. “I’d

recommend bringing the tiling full height up to the ceiling for a bold effect. This will open up the space, giving the illusion of a larger room. For those on a budget, instead of floor-toceiling tiling throughout the entire bathroom, think about tiling one block of the bathroom, such as the shower area or just the floor. Or, consider how you can wrap the tiling around certain bathroom products, and then how high you can take it to create impact.”

Mix and match

Whether you choose to combine matte and gloss finish, or to play with the scale of little and large, laying contrasting tiles makes a design statement. “For a bold look, try mixing two different brick colours together to create a pattern,” says Georgia. “When choosing multiple feature colours or tiles, try sticking to one pattern, or select one tone but create interesting layering through various textures,” the tile designer adds. “Ultimately, you don’t want your space to look busy, as this will see the tiles lose their impact.”

Little spaces

“Large tiles make a room appear bigger,” says Georgia, “and I suggest wrapping the floor tiles right to the ceiling if you’re trying to make the space feel more spacious. For a narrowshaped room, opt for a tile that is wide or long and position them horizontally to give the illusion that the room is wider than it truly is.” In little areas of the home, “don’t be scared to go dark or to use patterned tiles,” advise Nadia. “You can turn it into an artistic haven! But if you’re wanting the look of more space, tiles that have a glaze and create reflections make the room look bigger.”

Invest in quality

Tiles of Ezra (tilesofezra.com)

If you want to make a designstatement, it’s much easier to do so with well-produced materials. “Use handmade tiles, as they add depth and dimension in comparison to paint or mass-produced surfaces. If you are afraid of too much colour, go for a soft grey, white or nude colour. These will bring just as much charm without being too overbearing,” says Georgia. blivinguae.com | 13

Better Living x RAK CERAMICS

WHERE DESIGN MEETS FUNCTION Behind the RAK-Valet collection designed by Patrick Norguet

W

hat happens when an iconic designer meets one of the world’s top sanitaryware producers? A match-made in design heaven is what. Those with a penchant for ground-breaking design will know that Patrick Norguet has a particularly innovative approach to style. It makes sense, therefore, that when the designer teamed up with RAK Ceramics to create the RAK- Valet collection, he created a unique set of products. With roots in functionality, the pieces are elegant in form and effortlessly make a statement. Wanting to create a ‘dialogue’ between elements of the home, Patrick designed pieces that are both highly functional and beautiful to look at. The idea was to create a synergy between the person and the environment that they exist in – starting with the nature. As such, the collection has a focus on round, natural shapes. From the bathtub to the toilets, organic form has become the signature look of the collection. While the rounded edges of the RAK-Valet bathtub mean it is distinctive in design, its RAKSOLID material means it’s a product that has been made to last. The toilets share the bathtubs curved lines making them a statement choice when furnishing a bathroom. And each of the basins, whether curved or square, has been designed to add a level of style that exists far beyond just good function. Allowing you to create the bathroom of your dreams, the RAK-Valet collection is colour- customisable and interchangeable with the brand’s other standout collections. In the sanitaryware, choose from matte white or alpine white, and for the bathtubs you can select from five different colourways, including a bold matte black. Pairing the collection with RAK’s other solutions, such as the timeless RAK-Precious countertops and RAK-Joy vanity solutions furthers the possibility of crafting a bathroom with serious style credentials. rakceramics.com

How to master...

Coastal Design

Interior designer Neeshay Nouman from The Niche Corner (@thenichecornertnc) shares her style notes on taking design inspiration from the beach

ABOUT THE STYLE Originating inside breezy beachfront homes across America, the coastal style is an amalgamation of nautical, bohemian, Mediterranean and Hampton’s design. A coastally decorated home is a well-curated mix of light, texture and neutral shades, and is instantly recognisable for its obvious ode to the sea. WHO SUITS IT? As it’s a timeless style that ceases to age in a home, anyone can pull off this look. Although, that being said, it does work particularly well in properties close to the beach. What’s nice about this look is that although it’s pretty classic,

16 | blivinguae.com

it’s also versatile and it can be easily mixed up to make it more personal. HOW TO NAIL IT Go ultra-white. Opt out of a dull yellow-tone and instead go for a vibrant white colour on the walls. Jotun makes the most striking white with grey undertones called ’Skylight’it is my go-to cool hued shade. Flooring makes a huge difference. Installing wooden floors is sure to bring a coastal feel to your home. Living in a rental property and can’t rip out tiles? Fret not, LVT (Luxury Vinyl Tiles) to the rescue! They look like wood, act like wood, but are more cost effective, plus, they’re easier to install and remove. Keep it light and breezy. Avoid heavy curtains or blinds, and if you really want an option to block the sun, think about installing wooden shutters. For larger windows, stick with neutral, textured sheer curtains so that you can maximise the sunlight coming into your space. Shiplap walls. Japandi

W

When functional Scandi design meets Japanese

hile your mind might not obviously link Japanese styling and the Scandinavian trend, the two design suits actually have a lot in common. Starting with an appreciation for craftsmanship and simplicity, both philosophies lend themselves to a minimal look. Which is why the combined ‘Japdani’ trend sees simple, yet cosy environments crafted from a merging of the two ideas. With carefully considered simplicity being the starting point, we caught up with Idil Köseoğlu, from Goodmooddxb (@goodmooddxb) to find out how we should approach Japandi styling. FUNCTIONALITY IS KEY Both design schools of thought are of

18 | blivinguae.com

the opinion that less is more, so it makes sense that the Japandi style values high functionality over clutter. When applying this in your home, opt for pieces that are practical – while still being stylish. I like to mix lines of items to create an interesting look with just a few pieces. Using different styles of furniture in various shades of wood and textures is another way to give your practical pieces a cosy feel. CONTRASTING COLOURS Japanese style is known for its use of light wood along with eye-catching black accents, if you’re going for a timeless look, so it works to follow a monochromatic theme. Within the

trend there’s room to play around with a combination of contrasting colours, like pearl grey and sky blue, natural and dark wood, or black with pale pink. EMBRACE WABI-SABI The Japanese principal of wabi-sabi is about embracing imperfection and all that makes objects unique. Handcrafted items are a great way of bringing this philosophy into your home’s design. Try adding some clay pots, mugs and plates to your collection because they are unique and made from natural material so they will fit in seamlessly with the overall look.

trends | INSPIRATION

BE SIMPLE Keeping the space minimal overall is important, so when choosing accessories for your home don’t go overboard. You can select statement accessories but pick them very carefully and only select a few that really work together. When shopping for these it’s best to stick to natural materials like wicker and rattan. GO NATURAL Both the Scandinavians and Japanese have a deep affinity with nature, so naturally the Japandi trend is rooted in appreciation for the environment. A simple way to do this is by adding plants – I particularly like using bonsai trees or bamboo hanging planters but using a nature inspired colour palette along with natural materials also works. When selecting your upholstery, go for cotton or wool for an organic touch that’s made to last. WOOD The natural warmth of wood is highly revered in the Japandi style, which works well spread across mixed mediums. As well as wooden furniture and panelled walls, wooden floors make a great feature that instantly produces an on-trend feel. I would recommend keeping the surface treatments to a minimum so that you’re really capitalising on that all-natural vibe.

WELL-CRAFTED As cultures, both the Scandinavians and Japanese are known for practicing a slow way of life, and their appreciation for fine craftmanship. This means when you’re emulating this trend in your home, you should go for well-made pieces of furniture that have been built to last. Although this means they’re likely to be more expensive than your mass flat-packed goods, it also means that they’ll stand the test of time and likely look better than your run-of-the-mill object.

KEEP IT ECO-FRIENDLY With an emphasis on items made to last and natural materials it’s obvious that this trend has roots in being kind to the earth. Even if you’re not a natural eco-warrior, you can make small decisions in your interior design to embrace this aspect of a Japandi style. Shopping at local sustainable brands such as Wood and Steel (woodandsteelstore.com) and TRIBE (tribedubai. com), or accessorising with dried plants from your garden, will mean you’re doing your bit for the planet and gaining something beautiful in return.

A SK THE EXPERT

How do I choose the right art for my home? Mohammad Zomorodian, CEO of Mente Art Gallery in Oasis Mall, shares his tips for finding that perfect piece Art is an integral part of human nature, with early cave dwellers decorating their spaces with drawings. We can say art is a necessary element to boost well-being within a home. Therefore, it is most important to decorate your home with pieces that make you happy and that inspire you to feel good within each room.

if they’re going to be with you for the foreseeable future. You should keep in mind the colour scheme of the items you already own and how you wish to develop it. For example, if you have a beloved blue sofa, take that as inspiration for the artwork you select so that you’re able to put together a space that has design flow.

Start by defining the feel you want a room to have. As art is so instrumental in creating ambiance, you want to first pinpoint the atmosphere that you’re hoping to foster. That way, when you’re in a shop or gallery, you’ll naturally gravitate towards the paintings that will work within your space.

Be aware of the small details. The difference between a happy smiling face and a harsh poker face comes down to just a few brush strokes on the lips, so it’s important to take notice when you’re curating the mood of your home. Minor details are important in determining the overall feel of a painting, so when you’re at the gallery selecting the right one for you, spend some time closely analysing the work.

Decide on the space you’ll put the art in. Have you got a big space in your hallway to fill with an eyecatching piece? Or, are you creating a gallery wall to showcase lots of designs you love? Once you know this you’ll be able to make a better selection than you would without a clear game plan. It’s a good idea to keep paintings away from natural light and the heat of the kitchen to avoid damage. Where you place the art should depend on your personality. It’s vital that you’re able to enjoy the art that you choose. That’s why I suggest introverts prioritise finding pieces for the study, bedroom and kitchen. Whereas extroverts, who may have wider social circles, should deck out the entrance, reception and dining room with beautiful designs that will make hosting all the more enjoyable. Create a harmony with the other items in your home. When you’re selecting art for your home, be guided by the pieces that you already own, especially

If it touches you, it’s probably the right one. Art is subjective and about connection, so I suggest you take a sensory approach when deciding. This means that the piece that captures your heart as soon as you walk into the shop is probably the right one for your home. The art you choose to showcase in your personal space should have a positive effect on you, as you’re going to be looking at it every day. Consult the professionals. Sometimes it’s worthwhile to call in the experts. Having an interior designer is of course helpful, because they know what will suit your home. But if you don’t have a designer, our team of expert consultants will help advise you on the best options.

Let’s do

the tıme warp Come with us as we look around Kristi Georgakopolous’ vintage bungalow

A

mongst the original villas of Umm Suqeim, behind a bush of shocking pink bougainvillea, sits a 1970s bungalow with a grey-green front door. Behind its quaint exterior, the inside of this one-storey villa has been meticulously fashioned by interior designer Kristi Georgakopoulos with an array of collected vintage furniture and eclectic art. “I don’t like mainstream items, I like items that are different, and that have history,” explains the creative and mum-of-three as she shows us around her perfectly well-put together space. “If I haven’t had it made, I’ve sourced it from Dubizzle,” laughs the thrifty stylemaven. Originally from Melbourne, the Australian-Greek family moved to Dubai in 2008. It was after their move that Kristi turned her passion for design into a qualification at night school. “Style was something that always came naturally to me,” she explains, “I remember constantly rearranging my bedroom searching in the garage for vintage rugs!” Kristi, who now operates her interior design company under the, highly appropriate, name Eclectic Living (@ eclectic.living) describes her style as a ‘typical Melbourne look’, or ‘Mid-century with a dash of bohemian’. And much like Kristi herself, the rented bungalow most definitely has an alternative feel, with pieces that have been deliberately collected from her travels and, surprisingly from the sides of roads! “My friend spotted the sofa outside of her house. So Priya and I picked it up in the middle of the night,” the creative explains joyfully. Reupholstering the sofa in a burnt orange, it fits seamlessly in with the rest of the living area, as if it were purchased within a room set. “I just go for anything I like, and somehow it all fits together,” Kristi explains, perhaps not realising that it’s her innate flair for design that means the pieces work so well in unison. After all, not everyone could pick discarded furniture off the side of the road and style them into a home that’s worthy of the cover.

30 | bhomes.com

DISTINCTIVE DESIGN Devotees of Mid-century will instantly recognise the Barcelona Chair, but it’s in the juxtaposition of the fluffy rug and floor poofs that Kristi is able to flex her unique flair for eclecticism. “I love finding things on second-hand sites,” says Kristi. “My advice for anyone wanting to do the same is to check them regularly, and as soon as you see something you like, go for it! Haggling can mean you’ll be disappointed.”

SPACE TO ENTERTAIN A recent extension of the dining area means the family are ready to entertain year-round. “Before we only had space to entertain outside, now, we’re able to invite friends over for dinner parties inside,’ explains Kristi. With a large wood table shipped over from Australia and made-to-measure cabinets running alongside the walls of the open space, there’s plenty of room for guests to sit and enjoy the family’s warm company.

TEENAGE DREAM “When decorating my girl’s rooms, I treated them as if they were my clients,” says Kristi, “I interviewed them and got them to create mood boards on Pinterest before drawing up initial designs.” The designer used both her two eldest daughters’, Priya (18) and Alyna (16), bedrooms to enter the One Room Challenge, which saw her completing each room in 6 weeks. The bedrooms are unique and according to Kristi are a representation of the girls’ very different characters.

MOODY MAXIMALISM “I wanted to create drama in the bedroom, hence the dark grey paint,” explains Kristi. “I like the contrast of the moody walls with the bright colours and patterns in the bed linen and accessories.” The styling of the bed is an example of the designer’s maximalist approach. “I think clients are drawn to my use of patterns. I definitely like to mix them up and love clashing prints.”

SHIFTING SANDS Meet Will Bennett, the landscape architect making desert garden design hot

34 | blivinguae.com

INSPIRATION | outdoor space

I

n most gardens in the UAE, the fight against the natural climate has been fought so gallantly that it’s easy to forget we’re living in a desert. Cloaked in verdant greenery, our gardens’ sandy foundations have been covered with rolls of emerald turf that require daily watering in order to prevent them from turning burntyellow under the hot sun. But here to flip the switch on that narrative by encouraging people to embrace the natural environment, is British landscape architect Will Bennett. “When you think of the dunes and windswept plains, you probably think there’s no life out there, but that’s

actually not true,” says Will, owner of sustainable landscaping service WILDEN Design (wilden.design). “There is so much life underneath the sand, so many seeds waiting to germinate. They just need the right conditions to grow.” Speaking poetically about the potential for arid plants, Will explains, “The plants you see in the desert are hanging on to life, but when you bring them into a garden, give them a bit of water and some love they get bigger, greener and more beautiful. The same plant will look completely different in your garden than how it does in the desert. That’s because in the desert they’re surviving, whereas in your garden, they’re thriving.”

Sprouted during the lockdown of last year, WILDEN Design specialises in planting desert gardens that are easy to maintain, kind on the pocket, and sustainable. “I want to show people that with a small budget you can create something really exciting by using local plants and harnessing biodiversity,” the architect explains. Using locallysourced materials, Will designs gardens that maximise space and require minimal watering. Naturally, his own garden in Mudon is a visual representation of all that he stands for. “It was completely inspired by the desert and its natural resources. The gravel is a mix of beige, grey and brown stone from the Al Hajar mountains,” he explains. “Then all the plants are essentially native or arid-adapted plants, so they don’t need

WHEN NATIVE PLANTS ARE GIVEN A LITTLE BIT OF WATER THEY THRIVE INTO THEIR FULLEST POTENTIAL. YOU WOULDN’T SEE THAT HAPPEN IF THEY WERE GROWING WILD IN THE DESERT

36 | blivinguae.com

much water. In terms of species, “we’ve got agaves, that a lot of people will recognise as desert succulents. There’s also desert cotton, which grows wild in the UAE. It’s really cool, the Bedouins used to use the flowers of it to stuff the saddles for camels. So you know, there’s a lot of narratives tied up in this garden. For me, it’s much more than just a garden. It’s a way of showing people how you can design with nature in the desert,” Will enthuses. The garden, though small, has two areas for socialising – a raised deck and sunken firepit. “In a tiny space like this, the design has got to work really hard for you because you’re very limited,” Will explains. “Having two levels in a small garden makes it feel a lot bigger and gives it a richer experience. You’ve got two very different areas: one is at a higher-level for barbecues and dining, and the other is like the fire pit and chill zone. So, in what is really a little garden, you get this actually quite interesting experience as you move around it.” The plants require so little maintenance that Will is hesitant to admit he hasn’t done much pruning of the space since he planted it in November 2020, but this just stands as a testament to the philosophy behind WILDEN Design. “I always advise people to embrace the wilderness, and to let things grow into their natural shape. I’m not into cutting trees into lollipops, or spherical shapes, you know. It’s much cooler to let them do their own thing,” he says. And his approach goes beyond superficial styling, “If you were to stand here and observe the garden for five minutes, you’d see loads of birds come in. It’s full of wildlife. But you only get that when you’ve let nature just grow as it wants.” Will, who grew up in Manchester, was working in commercial design before he started with residential projects last year, though it was his mum who initially inspired his love of nature through tending to her garden. “I’ve inherited the love of plants from her,” he explains, “now my passion is for bringing nature to people’s backdoors, because that’s where you can have the most profound affect, I think. If I can teach that love of plants to people, then perhaps they’ll go on to

appreciate nature in the same sort of way,” Will says hopefully. While WILDEN Design has been operating for less than a year, and thriving during that time, Will feels as if he is battling against preconceived ideas. “Desert gardens come with a lot of stigma,” he says. “People say, ‘well, why would I want the desert in my garden?’ But if you see places around the world where they’ve worked with arid conditions really well – the drier parts of Australia, Arizona, and of course, Palm Springs – they’re well-advanced in terms of their design aesthetic and working with the plants they’ve got. Here, the market just isn’t mature yet. There are only a few designers working

with desert plants and materials. But I think there will soon be a culture around this – we’re just at the beginning now.” Looking ahead to the future of more natural gardens in the UAE, Will explains, “My dream is that we’ll design a set of spaces that can be replicated over big developments so that nature moves through, like a corridor, creating a physical and philosophical link between the gardens.” Planting the way, we predict that Will’s sustainable, affordable and no-fuss approach is on the cusp of something big. Much like a seed from under the dunes that’s been embedded into the perfect environment for life, perhaps the future of our gardens will grow into something green and sandy. blivinguae.com | 37

FOR A MODERN SPIN ON THE LOOK, PICK ONE MEDINSPIRED COLOUR AND DECORATE THE ROOM IN THIS TONE. IT GIVES THE ROOM A SLEEK FINISH AND FRESH FEEL.

Escape to the Mediterranean The modern Med-kitchen style defined, and how to use it in your home

W

ith many of us finally escaping to the sunny shores of the Mediterranean this summer, it’s not just our skin and wardrobes that are preparing to receive that Med-kissed look. That’s because the Mediterranean kitchen is back in fashion, but with a modern a twist that means it’s chicer than it has been before.

Modern minimalism

Less about dark wood and terracotta tiles and more about warm minimalism, the trend has seen a style revival. “It combines Mediterranean folkloric influences with a contemporary aesthetic – taking cues from sunny landscapes to embrace warmth and organic elements,” says Nikita Chellani from Roar Studio (@designbyroar). “A modern take on this style consists of

cleaner sharper lines with ash toned wood to keep it light and fresh,” says Emma Hutton from Emma Hutton Interiors (@emmahuttoninteriors).

Simple living

Using this style for urban city living suits the consciously minded. “Modern Mediterranean living is about bringing your values into the kitchen, where you spend quality family time,” says Miriam Llano from Cosentino (@cosentinomiddleeast). “The look suits an eco-conscious person, and you will see this in the choices they make from material to accessories. Cosentino’s Sunlit Days collection is the firstever carbon neutral collection from Silestone that uses HybriQ+ technology. The manufacturing process uses 99% reused water, 100% renewable electric energy, a blend of at least 20 percent

minerals plus quartz, and recycled raw materials in its composition, while significantly reducing the presence of crystalline silica,” Miriam explains.

Floating shelves

“Add some floating shelves in the kitchen to make it feel clean and contemporary, which also helps to avoid the feeling of being boxed in by cabinets in the transitional Mediterranean kitchen. Plus, whatever you put on the shelves will also make a statement, so it’s a great opportunity to showcase your dishes and accessories. Opting for a totally beige or white dinnerware set will add a calming effect,” says Emma.” Keep it clean by, “using modern glassware and uniform food jars.”

Coastal tones

“Instead of going for the traditional terracotta tiles with multicoloured designs, this modern revival sees colour swatches like mud, blue, green and yellow being used but in a block style,” says Emma. “Stick with earthy neutrals, and discrete pops of colour in your accessories.” The hues of the Sunlit Days collection, “take inspiration from real people and their stories,” explains Miriam. “The series consists of five colours: Arcilla Red, Faro White, Cala Blue, Posidonia Green and Cincel Grey. These solid neutrals and earthy colourways are inspired by the bright hues of the Mediterranean.”

Modern functionality

As the kitchen plays such a big role in both traditional and modern Mediterranean homes, it’s vital that it functions well. “You want to ensure the space is modern and functionally equipped in order to set the right atmosphere for people to gather socialise, cook and eat together,” says Nikita. “There is a comfortable feel to a kitchen like this where you can enjoy the modern cooking facilities, while fostering a homely vibe and still being particularly stylish,” says Emma.

Add texture

When we think back to summers spent under the hot sun, even our memories have a rustic feel that’s in-line with this decor aesthetic. “It’s key to choose an abundance of textures, that work cohesively within the sandy colour scheme and coastal theme,” advises Nikita. Combine some earthy tones such as wood or clay, with rattan furniture, and then offset them with whitewashed walls and concrete. “Traditional Med-kitchens use a lot of natural materials like wood, granite and marble. You would rarely find materials like chrome or plastics that are so much a part of modern kitchens.

40 | blivinguae.com

“Wrought iron is a staple of Mediterranean design,” says Nikita, “it was traditionally seen in the form of curlicue brackets and railings. But for a more current look, use black hardware with a contemporary shape. Do this with simple drawer pulls, shelf brackets, lights and faucets, which can add traditional character to your modern kitchen.” Pairing handles alongside matching black faucets will tie the look together and look great with the earthy colour.

For opulent living

Renowned interior designer Kate Instone talks designing a home that marries luxury and family living

W

ith a brief of ‘redesigning opulence’ for family living, Kate Instone, from Blush International (blush-int.com), knew that it was going to take more than traditional luxury finishing and high-end furniture to get this project right. “We created our own version of opulence,” explains Kate, “Like a bespoke Savile row suit, the look is understated, refined, and has an elegance that can only be appreciated by those who have a higher understanding of style and quality.” Setting the luxurious tone the minute you enter the house and taking advantage of the double-height space, Blush created a large bronze LED immersive art installation to hang in the entrance way. “The lobby leads through to the dining hall where we placed a statement 5m-long table made from a single piece of South American Parota wood,” explains Kate. “We paired the table with original Mid-century tubular metal dining chairs, sourced through a specialist dealer in London.” Upstairs, the team converted one wing of the large villa into a relaxing ‘master bedroom suite’ which has a bedroom, bathroom, dressing room, gym and private lift to access it from. “The bedroom was lined with copper mesh to decrease the electromagnetic radiation and to encourage deeper sleep.” Continuing with a well-being theme, the bathroom had a steam room added, along with chromotherapy and aromatherapy showers. “The dressing room leads directly to a private gym which has an entire wall of windows, and an espresso machine that sits on the gym bar counter alongside a set of Tom Dixon Brew espresso cups,” says Kate. The couple, who have a one-year-old daughter, bought the five-bedroom villa as a family home. But with the architecture of the property being ultra-modern, they requested a softer, more baby-friendly feel for their interiors. “They wanted to use

natural materials wherever possible, and quality and functionality were always at the forefront of our design discussions,” says Kate. “We looked to nature for a lot of our inspiration.” Whilst including elements of comfort, Blush made sure to keep the overall luxury feel by, “combining highly polished finishes, such as marble and concrete, with natural bronzes, raw woods and washed linens.” Colour was added through the couple’s eclectic art collection that lines the walls. “We re-used many of the clients' existing accessories and art pieces,” the designer explains. “It is very important to us that the homes we create don’t look like typical cookie-cutter Dubai show homes. We like our projects to reflect each family's journey through life, so we love to incorporate objects and artwork that they have curated over time. Each of our projects are full of personality, stories and soul…at the end of the day these are not Blush projects, these are our clients’ homes,” concludes Kate.

THE VERDICT "We are very pleased with the house – it looks even better than the initial design concept! The openness between the kitchen and living area will allow us to enjoy each other's company better." Marina Tublot

Balancing a luxe look and familyfriendly design Kate Instone's tips for creating your own practical family home with a distinctly luxury finish 1. Go bespoke. It's no longer considered opulent, and quite simply lacks sophistication to select a bedroom or dining room set from a catalogue. We suggest a more tailored and personalised approach, where you work with designers to create tailored pieces of furniture that you'll have forever. 2. Use colour for a homely feel. Neutral colours can give a high-end look but they don't scream family living. Use shades such as burnt orange, olive green and mousy taupe to bring a cosy feel, while still being stylish. 3. Keep children's rooms fun, but sophisticated. You want the room to be able to grow with your child, so don't fall into the trap of a full-blown Disneyfied room. Instead, use pattern to set a youthful feel, I recommend using Nina Campbell prints. 4 Use raw and natural materials to help keep a space feeling intimate, especially if you've got a particularly large room to fill. Mixing cool and light linens with natural woods gives a homely and highend feel. 5 Be true to yourself when selecting your accessories and art. It's important to pick items that you really like, not what's on trend. This way you'll end up with a home that speaks to you and tells your story.

Meet the neighbours

Nadeen Berjawi (@nadeen.in.yas) has just moved into a townhouse in Yas Acres. “My kids are so excited that they are just a bridge away from Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi, and that they can walk to Ferrari World. As for me, our home over looks a very nice park There’s nothing better than sipping my morning coffee and watching my kids play safely.” blivinguae.com | 51
