A new way of cooking

NEW COLOUR-WAYS

Twisting the dial on what we thought we knew about ovens, Miele unveiled a new revolutionary cooking technology at Expo 2020 Dubai. During the event, their Dialog oven was introduced by cooking a piece of fish that was submerged within a solid block of ice, without melting its surroundings. The oven was able to cook the fish completely through. The first-of-its-kind appliance uses radio frequency as a heat source, which is then emitted through high performance sensors. Electromagnetic waves respond to the molecules in the food and change throughout the cooking process creating a ‘dialogue’ between the cooking and the cook to ensure a perfect result. miele.ae

IKEA doors, sides and tops makeover company, Fronteriors (fronteriors.co) has added two new colour ways to their WOOD collection. Available for IKEA’s Besta, Metod and Pax units the oak veneer doors are easy to install yourself.

Titled a ‘Moment of Innovation’ the live stream event will take place from the Belgian Pavilion at EXPO 2020. The presentation will be a dive into the city’s Arabesque aesthetic style and modern finesse. Hosting the event will be Roberto Palomba, chief design officer at Ideal Standard, along with local industry experts, including architects Janus Rostock and Joe Tabet. “We will be diving deep into the ever evolving, kaleidoscopic view of design that is united in the stunning city of Dubai,” explains Ahmed Hafez CEO of Ideal Standard MENA. “The glitz and glamour of the city tied together with deep rooted Islamic culture and art, makes it truly a global icon.” Register for the event at togetherworldtour.com

St Regis Downtown Dubai Throwing open its doors in October, the new St. Regis Downtown Dubai has marked itself firmly on the luxury map of the UAE. “The St. Regis brand is tailored to the modern day connoisseurs as a home away from home destination,” offers Claire Craig, design director at WA International - who are the firm behind the interiors. The entrance chandelier was created to represent a gold necklace, reminiscent of those in the Gold Souk. Continuing with their nod to local culture, the walls- and their dedicated gallery- are adorned with artwork sourced by Thuraya Kamber. Using curated pieces from three local artists, Fatma Lootah, Julia Ibbini and Mike Arnold the walls speak of the city’s diversity. And of course, as with each of their properties, the rooms are elegantly furnished with showers and stand-alone bathtubs. stregisdowntowndubai.com

The art of tablescaping Throwing a decadent dinner party this winter? This is how to decorate your table

B

efore last year, tablescaping was largely associated with weddings, gala dinners, and annual balls. But after spending plenty of time amusing ourselves at home, the hashtag “tablescape” has over 1.5 million posts and is now considered a hobby for many. From small scale breakfasts to festive dinner parties, laying the perfect spread has become increasingly en vogue. If you’re new to the concept, here’s how to approach it according to local experts:

Make a plan

“When designing tables, always start by looking at the big picture – consider the type of event you are holding and the mood you wish to convey. This will guide the overall style of the table,” says Stephanie Savona, owner of online dinnerware shop The Voyage Dubai (thevoyagedubai.com). “It’s important to consider the food you’ll be serving,”

14 | bhomes.com

Lavender and May (lavenderandmay.com)

recommends Rula Tayara, founder of tablescape rental service Tableau (@ tableau_ae). “A tablescape that reflects the cuisine can really enhance the dining experience and provide a talking point for your guests,” she adds.

Pick a theme

“Whether you’re after a whimsical, modern or traditional look, choose a theme or a colour scheme and go from there,” says Katie from tablescapein-a-box service Lavender and May (lavendarandmay.com). For an allencompassing put-together look,

Stephanie advises to, “Select a colour or print and run with it, from the decorations around the home, to the Christmas table, right through to the wrapping paper for the gifts under the tree. A uniform theme makes it feel extra special.”

The essentials

“There is no need to rush out and invest in a whole new suite of dining items,” says Stephanie. “Some fresh table linen, candles and a beautiful floral arrangement are all you need to create a magical table setting at home.” Katie suggests you opt for “cloth napkins; they’re great as they’re a relatively inexpensive and easy way to add instant glamour to your table. Either invest in a quality plain white linen that you’ll use again and again or match the napkins to your theme.” Rula says: “don’t save things for special occasions. Use that wedding china, or your grandmother’s silver.”

tablescaping | INSPIRATION

The centrepiece “This is where to make a statement,” says Rula. “Use what’s around your home or even in your garden – a few branches from the palm tree outside will make a stunning table garland and bougainvillea stems add colour,” she adds. “One of the cardinal rules of centrepieces is, no matter how bold or magnificent it is, guests should still be able to see each other across the table,” says Stephanie. “Whether pillar or taper, candles are an easy win for a centre piece – they give off beautiful light and make everything feel a bit more special,” says Katie. “I always recommend some sort of natural element – flowers (real or faux) or greenery (in vases or layered down the middle of the table, garland style). Fruit and vegetables such as pumpkins and pomegranates look great on fall and winter tables.”

Festive trends

“Christmas this year is going to be big!” says Katie. “I’ve been seeing lots of heavily decorated and themed tablescapes. Think over-the-top centrepieces, lots of Christmas greenery and traditional colours,” she adds. “The trend for the season will be the return of times gone

by,” says Rula. “A classic Christmas style, with plenty of red and green, is making a comeback and trumping over a minimalist, modern look.” Agreeing with Rula, Stephanie says, “Christmas is going to be particularly nostalgic this year, with lots of families gathering for the first time in a while, so incorporate your personal traditions and use sentimental pieces.”

Sustainability

If, like us, you’re interested in ways to reduce your environmental impact but still want to craft an amazing spread, “opt for cloth napkins instead of paper to elevate the design without excess waste,” says Rula. Invest in pieces you’ll reuse, for example “A set of timeless white plates and beauitful pieces of textured glassware never go out of fashion. Another idea is to print one menu and frame it on the table. And mixing artificial with your fresh florals also lessens waste,” she says. “We love fossicking in antique shops and flea markets for vintage silverware and ceramics. It’s lovely to give these forgotten treasures a new home and they add a wonderful patina to your table settings,” says Stephanie.

Tip

THINK ABOUT THE TYPE OF EVENT YOU’RE HOSTING. IF IT’S A CASUAL GET TOGETHER, SKIP ON THE TABLECLOTH AND GO FOR BRIGHTLY COLOURED PLATES WITH SOME FRESH FLORALS.

TIPS FOR A TOP TABLE

Simple ways to elevate your dinner party: • A table runner or a tablecloth is an easy way to add colour and texture to the table. • Make it personal by adding a place card for a welcoming and special touch. • Give something to your guests. Monogrammed napkins or mini truffle oils are a nice addition that your guests can take home. • Stay mindful of the height of the items that could block your social interaction. Stick to shorter vases and lower-level decorations. • Be practical. Your guests still need somewhere to put their drink down without knocking over a giant reindeer!

How to master...

Minimalism Owners of IKEA furniture revamp company Fronteriors, Kath Hawkes and Linda Dekkers share their tips

WHAT IS IT? A minimalist style is all about creating an atmosphere of calmness and deliberate simplicity. Largely associated with the Scandinavian interior movement, the style is characterised by sleek items in muted colours. The furniture should be comfortable and functional, and clutter must be kept to a minimum. ABOUT THE STYLE The movement, as we know it now, began in the late ‘50s as an amalgamation of traditional Japanese philosophy, Bauhaus architecture, and the modern art scene. The functional design we’re familiar with today was especially

16 | blivinguae.com

Marina Home

popular in Scandinavia. Now, you’ll find minimal design everywhere, from restaurants to homes. It is mostly created by using natural materials, a clean pallet, and almost empty shelving. Create a blank canvas. You should approach a minimalistic style by first crafting a clean slate to work from. Then add to it where you feel it needs a personal touch. We believe that you should feel at home in your own house, which can be done by including furniture and items you love. Your home should tell your story. Invest in good storage. Hide necessary appliances and unsightly objects behind closed doors. Whether this is in the kitchen, your bedroom or your office. Storage space is a key element for any minimalistic home. Our Fronteriors (fronteriors.co) storage units allow you to hide appliances and clutter out of sight. You can choose a style which fits your needs in terms of look, size, and height.

Quality over quantity. Having pieces of furniture that will last is important when you’re trying to live minimally. A typical minimalist lifestyle is about only keeping what you really need, so keep clutter on the low. Use the top of a cabinet or a shelf to display treasures and personal items that make you happy. All other personal items should be stored out of sight. Green with envy

Emerald green is in – this is how to use it in your home Symbolising wealth, vitality, renewal and peace, emerald green is a powerful colour when it comes to design. Though it can often seem an intimidating shade to start throwing around, when it’s done right there’s no denying its style prowess. Julia Woodger (@my_interiors_fix), interior designer at Stella and the Stars, talks us through ways of making the colour work in your home...

trend | INSPIRATION

GREEN AND BLUE These two colours naturally work side by side because they sit next to each other on the colour wheel. When placed together in a design scheme, these harmonious colours can create a calming feel which is aesthetically pleasing to the eye. Just make sure you choose greens and blues within the same chromatic range so that they don’t clash.

COMPLEMENTARY COLOURS Emerald green has the potential to make a bold statement, especially when it is teamed up with a complementary shade. For a highfashion look, pair it with accents of sapphire pink, peach, blush or tangerine. Mixing warm and cool tones will balance the room and give it a rejuvenating feel without being too overpowering.

bhomes.com | 19

JEWEL TONES Designers predicted jewel tones to be a serious colour trend for 2021, and with emerald green popping up in many fashion shows, it appears they were right. Jewel tones can transform any room into a luxurious sanctuary, whether used in moderation or to the max. Combine several deep jewel tones together for an elegant look or, go bold and choose emerald green as a base colour for your walls. To ground the space, introduce accents of another rich colour through your accessories, artwork, or perhaps a side table or velvet armchair. METALLICA Metallics complement jewel tones, such as emerald green, beautifully and add contrast, richness and a bit of sparkle to a space. Brass mirrors, lighting, and accessories will uplift a dark room and make rich colours pop. Just be sure to use metals that are in the same colour family as your jewel hues.

‘TIS THE SEASON The festive months are the perfect time to add some drama and have fun with a bolder scheme. Rich hues are not only glamorous, but also cosy and welcoming during the cooler months and, in fact, work beautifully in your home the whole year round. Strong shades of green, fuchsia and deep blue look stunning against pops of festive gold and silver.

trend | INSPIRATION

EXPAND YOUR HORIZONS The kitchen is a great room to play around with colour. Emerald green cabinetry teamed with a fresh, white marble countertop exudes elegance whilst also making a fun statement. Why not pair with soft, pale pink walls? Benjamin Moore’s ‘First Light’ paint colour is a divine option! And in the bathroom, emerald green tiles are a fabulous way to add some life. Combine them with metallic brass hardware and a marble countertop to add a touch of Art Deco glamour. DIP YOUR TOES When using emerald green in the home you can choose to use a lot, or a little. It all depends on how much of a statement you want to make. If you’re not ready to dive in fully, then keep things simple

and add a few accents of green to inject vitality and energy into the space. Painting just the bottom half of a wall in green and pairing with a fresh white top half can look crisp and contemporary. BACK TO NATURE Using the colour green in your home is a great way to pull nature indoors and instil a sense of reassurance and comfort. Soothing green hues have proved very popular over the last year as we’ve craved that connection to nature and have looked towards designs that calm the mind. To create a restorative ambience, combine rich green walls or accent furniture with neutral furnishings, organic shapes, earth-toned accessories, wooden framed artwork, and potted plants, such as succulents. bhomes.com | 21

7.00 am Lay in bed and catch up with messages from the USA. All my supplies come from the States, so a lot happens overnight.

8.00 am Time for a quick shower before having some fruit for breakfast. Lots will be running through my head for the day ahead.

9.00am Head into my workroom. Do a quick sweep and tidy up of all the debris and glitter from the day before – it’s messy work! I am not someone who can keep all their supplies in tidy boxes. It needs to be easily accessible and simple.

Festive set-ups by Seasons By Design

11.00am Music goes on – of course it’s a Christmas playlist! Working on custom orders today. It’s a very long 14-metre stair garland. This needs around 30 bows, so that’s where I start.

2.00pm Time for break and something to eat. It’s my time to think about the next day and what needs to be done. Answer some queries and catch my breath.

3.00pm A client stops by to pick up her order. Everyone always says the finished product looks amazing and far better than it does in photos. My biggest frustration is that photos don’t do them justice.

4.00pm Back into the workroom to finish sticking all the items down on the garland, before fluffing bows and cleaning glue strings. Then it’s time to work on a new wreath idea. It’s The Grinch today, people just seem to love that theme!

OF A CHRISTMAS DESIGNER Janet Waite is the brains behind the festive decorating service Seasons by Design (@seasons_by_design) 7.00 pm My wonderful housekeeper has cooked dinner tonight, I am usually too tired to cook.

8.00pm I do watch TV in the evening, but I’m always working whilst doing this. While I’m watching I’ll cut ribbon and make bows for my next customers – I make well over one thousand bows in a season.

9.00pm Spend a little bit of time catching up on emails and check in with suppliers in the USA. I’ll place a few

orders for new supplies, then do a little online research for the next theme I am planning. My brain never switches off at this time of year. I actually start taking orders in August to get ahead.

11.00pm I head to bed but not to sleep. I’ll keep working, making lists and planning for the next day. Tomorrow is a big tree installation, and the next day I’m teaching a masterclass at a big department store, so I’m busy thinking about this as I drift off to sleep. blivinguae.com | 23

expert advice | INSPIRATION

A SK THE EXPERT

How do I make sustainable choices when purchasing furniture? Arnaud Mouton Business Development Manager from Soul & Tables (soulandtables.ae) talks eco-puchasing Sustainably sourced furniture provides environmental, social and economic benefits. They protect public and environmental health over their whole life cycle, from the extraction of raw materials until their final disposal. When buying solid wood, make sure they’re using a sustainable lumbering practice that includes new seedlings which are planted faster than trees are removed. All the teak wood used by Soul and Tables is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), which means it is sourced using low-impact logging methods. Cheap furniture is typically sold at an attractive price point because somewhere within its life cycle a compromise has been made, be it the quality of the material, craftsmanship, or the labour used to produce it. A lot of fast-furniture is made from particle board and then covered in laminate or veneer. This means that if the surface gets damaged it can’t be sanded back and repainted like solid wood. Therefore a lot of mass produced fast furniture accounts for a large proportion of landfill waste. It is difficult to recycle because it is made of composite materials and laminated particle board, which is not biodegradable. Your purchase acts as a conscious effort to reduce waste and as a vote to support ethical labour. Not only are you doing your part towards minimising your carbon footprint, but when you buy eco-furniture that’s made with minimal amounts of chemicals, you’ll get less harmful pollutants, like volatile organic compounds (VOCs), released into the air inside your home. Plus, purchasing ethically helps to support local communities, designers and craftsmen in their work to ensure they are compensated and treated fairly.

Investing in solid wood furniture means you can increase the item’s life span by maintaining and treating it. Apart from that, using placemats and coasters will help avoid marks, and any spills should be cleaned up immediately with a dampened cloth and natural soap. Make sure you always work in the direction of the grain. Though natural materials tend to discolour overtime, you can prevent this by avoiding direct sunlight and moving decor placed on top from time to time to keep surfaces consistent. Soul and Tables offers complimentary staining and varnishing depending on the finish of the wood, and full servicing of discoloured or defective scratches or chips. Purchasing eco-friendly and quality furniture, means it’s made to last. The pieces at Soul & Tables have been designed with high-quality wood and materials to ensure you can take the pieces wherever you go and not have to furnish your home every time you move. With timeless and classic designs it also means you are able to cater to any interior or surrounding style, regardless of where your new home is. Purchase fewer items of better quality. This will allow you to keep your furniture for a longer period of time and cut down on contributing waste as soon as your table’s laminate starts to disintegrate. You can adopt the minimalist mindset by cutting back on the amount of furniture in one space by looking for pieces with flexibility. Something that’s both practical and multipurpose, such as a stool that doubles as a side table. Opt for items that are timeless and stylish, rather than trendy. A classic piece, such a solid wood dining table, will stand the test of time, reducing the need to purchase a new table every few years.

How to plan an alfresco party with Danube Home Expert tips for prepping your garden for winter gatherings

If you’re planning a garden party, now is the time to get your garden guest ready. Here are the most important things to consider as you do so: SEATING To be the perfect host at your outdoor gatherings, you should first and foremost ensure that you have plenty of seating for all your

30 | bhomes.com

guests. You can choose outdoor sofa sets, outdoor dining sets or sofa sets that double up as dining sets. For large backyards or lawns, you can have laid back loungers and swings to sit and sway in, as additional seating options. Be sure to measure your outdoor space and choose furniture that fits well without over cluttering the space.

Better Living x DANUBE HOME

THINK PRIVACY One of the main factors you need to consider when designing your outdoor space is how much privacy you need, especially if your garden overlooks your neighbours. You may want to invest in a gazebo with sliding doors or curtains. Additionally, artificial grass fences are also a great way to make your space private without compromising on the overall look. INVEST IN A BARBECUE SET Outdoor parties are incomplete without a barbecue. Choose between a portable or fixed barbecue set depending on how often you plan on using it and the space available. Opt for an outdoor bar unit with stools that comes with a barbecue set to create the ultimate entertainment spot. PAY ATTENTION TO LIGHTING Lighting plays a crucial role in creating a functional space. They’re also necessary to set the ambience in the space. Be sure to add lighting along walkways to ensure your guests can move around the space. String lights are perfect for outdoor spaces as they create the illusion of a ceiling without obstructing the stars. Pendant lights and outdoor chandeliers are the best option for lighting a gazebo. Sconces are great for patios and pole lights are ideal for lighting up walkways.

SET THE MOOD WITH DÉCOR While lighting is great to create ambience, garden décor is essential to set the mood in your outdoor space. From lighting shaped like woodland creatures to soothing fountains, there are several items that can add a whimsical charm to your outdoor space. Decide a theme and add décor items that match. You can even get creative with artificial or natural landscaping. Designed to impress Inside a home on Jumeirah Islands that received a wow-factor renovation by Designsmith

What makes a home have wow-factor? Perhaps, you’ll say it’s bold architecture that breaks rules à la Grand Designs? Or perhaps it’s a jaw dropping arrangement of statement furniture? For us, it’s a home that’s been crafted with purpose. Where the design is deliberate and one that has been thoughtfully crafted to serve the lifestyle of its inhabitants. Of course, it helps if the homeowners have enlisted the assistance of a team of experts with years of experience in doing just that. “From our initial discussions we realised that the family are very socially active, they host guests quite a bit,” says Mihir Sanganee, Creative Director at Designsmith (designsmith.ae) as we sit in his most recently finished project on Jumeirah Islands. “Everything had to open towards the vista, which is the lake,” says the young architect - who was recently nominated for Architect of the Year by Design Middle East. The living space has been sectioned with rustic iron sliding doors that when closed create intimate seating areas and open to reveal a large space for entertaining. “We kept the spaces segmented, yet visually connected,” says Mihir. This understanding of the client’s needs is an integral part of the studio’s business model, which was established in 1988 by Mihir’s father. “We build relationships,” he says as he talks us through a typical design process with Designsmith. This family home remodel, which thanks to a global pandemic, spanned almost two years, was completely redesigned to serve the homeowners. After long-term Dubai-residents Pushkar and Nishita Khurana bought the villa, they knew they wanted their new home to capture attention, whilst still being homely. Hand selecting several companies to turn her dream into reality, Nishita chose Designsmith for the overall design and Italian manufacturers FlorenStyle for the furniture kit out. After the homeowners purchased extra land outside of the villa’s boundaries, Designsmith reworked the floorplan, adding an additional bedroom by removing the double storied entrance hall and created more living space downstairs. “This is at the heart of what we do,” says Mihir. “We’re able to restructure layouts, planning the interiors so that they’re maximized and practical.” Due to the extension,

We restructure layouts, rearranging the interiors so they’re interesting an additional downstairs toilet was added to serve their many guests, and both powder rooms off the living space. These were further given large panels of backlit onyx to provide some serious eye-candy. Though mostly open plan, the kitchen was deliberately tucked away, leading off from the formal dining area so that the staff can access it without it distracting from the main living room. Instead, it’s the bespoke bar that becomes the central feature and point of congregation within the large room. “Nishita didn’t want the bottles to be displayed,” the architect explains. The shutters slide open so that when the family are hosting there is a full bar, but when it’s closed it still works

as a style feature. “We picked unique details that we appreciated from Italian brands and created a bar which not only is functional but also elegant.” In fact, each item of furniture in the house shares the same sophisticated Italian finish. This is because Designsmith has carefully planned, designed, and had each piece made to fit the home. All the custom furniture is from FlorenStyle, a bespoke Italian furniture company which produces locally, an offshoot of the Designsmith brand. “Nishita didn’t want a cluttered house, so we went for a minimal finish and used her brief with subtle touches of grey,” explains Mihir as he looks over

We went for a minimal finish with lots of subtle touches of grey the beautiful home he and his team have created. “If someone comes to us asking for a table, we will design it and then have it made so that it is completely bespoke and right for the space,” he adds. It’s in the synergy between initial design and completion that this heritage design company showcases their best work. With a team of over 350 people and almost 70,000 square-feet factory space locally, it’s no wonder that Designsmith is a key player in the region. “The studio is rapidly growing,” says Mihir excitedly.

“And we’re currently setting up our own experience centre, so our customers can see our level of finishes, explore samples and curate their own spaces.” Adding another string to their bow, along with working directly with clients, the company use their fit-out team to support local interior designers turn their plans into reality. As a result of their multifaceted approach, Mihir and his fit-out team are making waves in the market and especially this community. “We recently were highly commended

for 2021 as Boutique Design Studio of the Year, and we’ve got six ongoing projects in Jumeirah Islands itself. I’m certain 2022 will be amazing for us,” Mihir concludes with a genuine smile. The architect’s passion for design is evident, in both his humble demeanour and his work. Being able to handle the entire process from initial layout design, to fit-out and bespoke furniture creation means that the possibilities for crafting a home with the wow-factor is something that comes instinctively to Designsmith. bhomes.com | 37

From our perspective

After Nishita and Pushkar Khurana purchased this five-bedroom house in July 2019, Nishita set about piecing together a team of experts who could help her to manifest their dream home. “Of course, I wanted it to be beautiful,” says the mum of two, who has a keen interest in interior design. “But I also wanted it to feel comfortable, so the process was about finding that balance.” The couple, originally from Mumbai, have lived in Jumeirah Islands since 2006 but decided to snap up this property after it was listed lower than cost value. “Because we had got a good price, we had the budget to break it all down and create a blank slate,” Nishita explains. The masterplan was devised to accommodate the family’s mutual love of hosting, “The idea was to create a space for our family & friends. The big bar was essential for us to be able to hang around,” shares Nishita. Enlisting the help of multiple experts who could each bring something unique to the project, the interior design savvy mum was careful in her selection process, “I chose Designsmith because I wanted bespoke design and I wanted unique curated furniture made instead of buying it because I wanted custom sizes and personalization,” she explains. “I liked that I could get the exact look and finish for the items and then could put them all together.” With Designsmith’s help, Nishita created a living room to serve the family’s every day needs, one that doubles up as a scenic backdrop for hosting parties. “The space planning is amazing, we can close off the spaces - so if my son is hanging out with his friends he can do that without disturbing us and we want, we can also fit people comfortably in when it’s too hot to be outside. I’m actually hosting my first party since we moved in last month,” Nishita says excitedly, looking across her glamorous living room. EXPERT ADVICE

Allergy proof your home

Dr Loubser at Genesis Healthcare Center Dubai

Achoo! Allergies got you down? We caught up with leading allergen specialist Dr. Michael Loubser, Consultant Paediatrician, Immunologist/ Allergist and hypoallergenic product provider Sani Allergy by Saniservice to find out how to treat our homes

40 | bhomes.com

Better Living x SANISERVICE

A

n estimated 20 to 25 percent of people have some form of respiratory allergy, and if you’re one of them, it’s likely you’ve always got a pack of antihistamines at the ready. But did you know that there are several environmental changes that we can make in order to keep the attacks at bay? To find out more, we spoke to renowned immunologist and paediatrician, Dr. Michael Loubser. After earning a degree in Medicine in South Africa, he went on to further his studies in the UK and Canada. He has held various positions within the GCC, including Head of Allergy and Immunology and Chief of Paediatrics. As member of the European Society for Immune Deficiency and the Clinical Immunology Society, Dr Loubser is an expert in the field of allergens. In 2013, Dr Loubser played a crucial role with Saniservice (saniservice.com), pioneers in the disinfection industry - to establish Sani Allergy (saniallergy.com). As a division of Saniservice, Sani Allergy specialises in high-grade hypoallergenic products aimed at alleviating allergens from the indoor environment. All Sani Allergy products face rigorous testing including going through a professional Simulation Chamber, before hitting the shelves. So, how can we protect our homes against the most common allergens? Dr Loubser shares his expert advice: What is a respiratory allergy? This is the type of reaction that manifests because of a trigger in your environment. The symptoms include puffy eyes, itchiness, redness, a blocked or running nose, and itching in the mouth or ears. Which triggers are most common? The weather in the UAE means it is different to more temperate climates, in that we don’t have to deal with the seasonal allergies. But what that does mean is most of the allergens in our environment are inside our homes.

MOULD Due to the humid climate, we face a lot of indoor humidity which causes mould, as does the air conditioning that we use to combat the humidity. It’s almost

always the case that poorly installed or maintained air conditioners are the source of a mould allergy. You can also develop mould if you have a water leak, or the damp proofing hasn’t been done properly. Treatment: Ideal humidity is around 45 to 55 percent, and if you’re AC is not working properly the levels can get up to 85 percent. If you’ve got a lot of humidity inside, I would recommend investing in a dehumidification unit, which will work to take some of the moisture out of the air. And even if your humidity levels are ok, the AC still needs to be cleaned regularly to make sure it’s not full of dust and that the drip trays don’t get blocked up.

DUST MITES A dust mite is a microscopic, eightlegged insect which is just 0.2 of a millimetre. They live in warm, humid environments, and when they’re in your bed there will be around a quarter of a million. But don’t worry it’s got nothing to do with how hygienic you are, it’s down to the climate we live in. Humans who are allergic to dust have adverse reactions to the bug’s bodies and faeces, rather than dust itself. Treatment You can’t vacuum them out as they’re too small, so the best approach is to have a company come in to kill and remove them. A steam system is the best way to do so, before a highpressure suction to remove the bodies. But what’s critical is you’ve got to get a mattress encasement put on afterwards. A high-quality dust mite cover should be breathable, not just a plastic sheet! The tightness of the weave should be so tight that dust mites’ can’t get through the air. Even the size of the needle that is used to stitch the zips in has to be standardised so that you don’t leave great big holes that dust mite can come through.

COCKROACH DUST When we talk about someone being allergic to cockroaches, is not the live ones we’re worried about. For every one cockroach you’ve ever seen, there’s probably a million others that have died outside. It’s the ones that have

decomposed into dust that are the allergens. Treatment When it comes to the removal of this, you obviously want to remove as much dust from your environment as possible. This is where air purifiers come in to suction out the floating particles from the air. You should also make sure to use a vacuum cleaner with either HEPA filters in them or water traps. Is there a long-term cure for allergies? As a rule, it’s not a good idea to rely on medication to control your allergy. Instead, start by addressing the allergen triggers in your home environment. But remember that you want to clean your home, rather than sterilise it. It’s important to implement the use of technologies such as a dehumidifier, air purifier and mattress protector to safeguard yourself against attacks. And who are monosensitised may receive immunotherapy. This is achieved by exposing the patient to very small but increasing doses of the allergen, either under the tongue or by injection. The process takes 2-3 years. You should always consult the advice of a professional allergy doctor before taking action.

DR LOUBSER RECOMMENDS SANI ALLERGY When my patients want to address the root cause of their allergens and put an end to the attacks, I refer them to Sani Allergy by Saniservice. As the GCC’s premier source of hypoallergenic products they have a range of high-grade equipment and expert services including: Dehumidifiers Air purifiers Mattress encasements AC sanitisation Dust mite/ bed bug control Air Quality testing Surface and air microbial testing

Deck the halls Janaika Elders from Urban Nest throws open the doors on her festive garden bhomes.com | 43

M

uch like her festive table setting, the music that fills Janaika’s garden is Christmas, with a twist. Smoothing out her leopard print tablecloth while Ariana Grande’s Santa Tell Me plays out of the speaker, it’s clear that this entrepreneur has a playful sense of style. “I like things that are a bit different,” says the mum of two as she sits in her dark green living room with printed wallpaper and Arabic calligraphy decals. “Even Christmas doesn’t have to be traditional, you can have fun with it.” It’s this playful approach to style that has seen Janaika become a successful business owner. Those who are familiar with Urban Nest, which Janaika set up in 2017, will recognise a similar spirited design in the products they stock. The boutique, which has just opened a studio in Al Quoz, stocks a procurement of Dutch and Latin American accessories. A tie to her heritage, Janaika is half Dutch, half Peruvian, but lived around the world before meeting her husband in Paris and moving to Dubai. It was after she fell pregnant and moved from an apartment to a villa that inspiration for her boutique struck. “I couldn’t find the things that I liked here in Dubai,” she explains, “every time I went to Holland, I would bring things back in my suitcase, so I came up with the idea of importing the products.” After leaving her job in imports and exports, Janaika used her previous experience to launch Urban Nest as an E-Commerce site in 2017. With a heavy focus on Dutch brands such as HK Living and Puik Design the site quickly gained popularity with the UAE’s style mavens for its quirky homeware. “A Dutch style is contrary to Scandinavian, although it does have that minimal look, it’s a bit more playful and colourful,” she explains. “They also value homemade items and things that are unique rather than mass produced. The products are all very playful but still minimal, and that goes well with the Peruvian brands because they like colour and patterns.” Naturally, Janaika’s home in The Lakes, which she shares with husband Chadi, and their two boys, Rayan (6) and Nadim (4) is fashioned using the eclectic items she imports. Growing up as a third culture kid, it’s clear to see her worldly experience within the spacious villa that has a unique

but homely look. With the garden playing venue to the family’s many parties, it is also kitted out with her signature Dutchmeets-Peruvian feel. The wooden bar and cosy seating area nod to the couple’s love for hosting. As does the beautifully laid table setting complete with a decent smattering of HK Living ceramics. When Janaika shares her advice for throwing a garden dinner party she says, “You don’t have to buy a lot of stuff to make a nice table. Look at what you already have in the home, bougainvillea looks beautiful in a jar, or you can use a leaf to write guests names on.” Last year, the family hosted a Christmas themed barbecue, “we had decorations everywhere!” She exclaims. “We love hosting, and we tend to be the ones always having parties. The whole outdoor set up is perfect, especially because we have the bar!” This year the family of four plans on spending a few weeks in Thailand, so will have less of a set-up but have marked the occasion early with this quirky, Dutch-meetsPeruvian display that echoes both Urban Nest and Janaika’s personal style. bhomes.com | 45

Gardenparty ‘Tis the season to be outside, fa-la-la-la-la...

W

e’ve made it! It’s officially cool enough to sit outside, which means socialising has gone alfresco. And after two years of keeping a safe distance, we’re hitting the season with a bang. As we dust off our tables, put the cushions back outside and give some TLC to our sun-sucked plants, it’s entertaining we’re preparing for. Whether you’re all about the candlelit dinners shared with close friends, or extravagant garden parties with the whole street, if you’re throwing open your patio doors this year, this is what you need to consider.

46 | blivinguae.com

Layout

“The right space to entertain must have enough shade, and not be too far from the house,” says Valentina Piscopo from KUKY Design (kuky-design. com). “The best gardens are the ones that make you happy and comfortable. Mostly they are the ones that give off a relaxed atmosphere and are easy to move through,” she adds. If you’re planning on hosting frequently this season, “make sure there is ample space for people to move and that there is enough light so they can see,” says Zarmina Khan from Zarmina Interiors

(@zarminainteriors). “Do this by considering the position of the seating and lighting.”

Dining table

Of course, if you plan on eating outside, the table is an important factor. “For dining alfresco, the table can be set anywhere, but preferably in the centre of the garden so that everything can be taken in,” says Zarmina. “It should not be too close to the barbeque area due to the heat and fumes,” says Paula Kotan from Effekt Design (@effekt_design). “It is also important to be concious about

the noise, especially if you have outdoor speakers or like to hold gatherings late into the night.” To create ambiance and shade, “Consider placing it underneath a structure, such as a pergola or umbrella,” recommends Valentina.

Flooring

If you’ve got a lawn, consider putting in faux grass, “as it can be incredibly time consuming to keep real grass looking good and requires huge amounts of water, which is not very sustainable and puts a strain on those DEWA bills,” says Valentina. “Once you have decided about the type of grass, the next step is to consider the flooring,” says Zarmina. “I love artificial or real wood decking, and tile or concrete come a close second.” Be practical in your decision making, “With this region’s heavy dose of sun and sand, low maintenance is a must,” says Paula. “Porcelain tiles are always low maintenance, easy to clean, last forever, and come with lots of designs. But cement tiles are also a good choice as they withstand wear and tear extremely well.”

Plants

Largely responsible for creating a nice ambience in an outdoor space, “Pampas grass is one of my favourite plants. Fluffy and feather-like, it’s super cost effective and grows really quickly too,” says Valentina. “And fully grown date palms certainly bring the wowfactor to your garden. If you want to create a holiday-feel, try a mixture of frangipani and white bouganvillea flowers. The white flowers will really set the scene for a dreamy atmosphere,” the designer adds. “For a coastal look, use banana and coconut trees for their tropical feel. Pair them with cacti and tall grasses for a regional twist,” says Zarmina.

Lighting

“Opt for uplighters across the walls and a few spotlights around the house to give enough light in the evenings,” says Valentina. “Use fairy lights above and candles on the floor to create a cosy feeling around the entertaining areas when dusk falls,” she adds. “Create a feature points by lighting your bar area, any sunken seating, and the stairs, then put some at all the action areas, like the barbeque counter and

Tip

USE NATURAL DECORATIONS FROM THE GARDEN. USING REAL FLOWERS AND LEAF ARRANGEMENTS THAT YOU’VE PICKED YOURSELF GIVES A PERSONAL TOUCH dining table,” says Paula. “Ambient lighting such as string lights, flame torches and lanterns are a must when entertaining,” says Zarmina.

Furniture

Choosing the right pieces of furniture will ensure longevity and various options for gatherings. “Solid wood, especially teak, and aluminium are the safest and long-lasting choices,” says Paula. “These materials are not only low on maintenance, but they are widely available and can be picked in many different styles.” If you’re planning to create a low-level seating area, “Rugs made of PET are ideal as they can be hosed down,” says Valentina. “Cushions or outdoor mattresses made of materials like Sunbrella will last for decades, along with anything made from teak wood.” When styling your garden for a party, Zarmina takes a creative approach. “Bring your indoor furniture outdoors when you’re hosting. There are no rules of mixing and matching…. as long as it sits well!”

Kuky Design (kuky-design.com)

Accessories

“Once you have decided the vibe and the theme, the styling options are limitless!” says Zarmina. “I like to use real and flameless candles, throws, cushions and colourful rugs when I’m throwing a party.” Paula says, “Style your garden as you would your living or dining room, and that level of decoration will really help take it to the next level.” When throwing a dinner party, “Make sure you have a handful of pretty trays to serve nibbles and drinks on”, suggests Valentina. “And don’t forget to stock up on some seriously stylish dinnerware to set the mood.”

Paint it black How Smart Renovation gave this kitchen on The Palm a touch of their signature Italian flair

“W

e changed the whole concept that they had in mind, but we said if you don’t like it, you don’t have to pay us,” Marco Tedeschi laughs when talking about this black kitchen renovation that Smart Renovation (smartrenovation.ae) completed in Marina Residence. Needless to say, the couple, who own this home on The Palm, loved it. The kitchen was renovated as part of a four-month complete home renovation, which saw a stylish modern stamp put on the villa. “As a couple who liked to entertain often, they wanted a space that would impress guests,” says Marco. “So, it was important to create a large island counter to accommodate the family and their friends,” he adds. The open plan kitchen, which flows on from the spacious living and dining area, has become a focal point of the room when it comes to socialising. To create a synergy between the two spaces, the team made ‘smart’ and deliberate decisions. “We chose to use low cabinets that are not mounted onto the wall, so that there would be a visual flow to the entire living space without obstructions,” explains Marco. The couple wanted a heavy-duty kitchen to house their Gaggenau appliances while maintaining a chic finish. “The overall look we went for is elegant and unique,” says Cinzia Tedeschi, Marco’s wife and business partner. In order to achieve this, the extractor fan was removed and replaced with an in-built counterpart. Spotlights were carefully placed to light the counter tops and accessories were kept to a total minimum to showcase the simple elegance of the Italian-designed kitchen.

Open plan kitchens Marco and Cinzia share their tips for creating a seamless flow 1 Avoid wall cabinets. They only work in a closed kitchen where that is the focus of the room. In an open plan living area, use low or full cabinets for less visual obstructions. 2 Design in synergy with the rest of the living area. Follow the style of the furniture and the feel you've created in the rest of the room. 3 When planning your kitchen design, don’t forget this space will likely become a communal hub for your family. Create an island or peninsular counter that allows people to sit, eat and gather.

THE VERDICT SIMPLE FURNITURE HELPS TO GIVE THE BLACK KITCHEN MAXIMUM EFFECT Smart Kitchens was set-up two years ago to bring affordable Italian kitchen design to the UAE. It exists as a branch underneath their Superior Living brand, which encompasses the family’s total interior and architectural solutions. Bringing high design and expert fit-out experience, the team pride themselves on their eye for providing high-quality for a reasonable price. The USP of the Italian-run company is their ability to handle everything from the initial design, fit-out process to the final finishing touches. “The modern light above the counter-top really defines the space,” says Marco. Opting for a tonal black on the cabinets, “we went for a white backsplash to create a strong contrast and one that fits with the rest of the living space,” he explains. The final result is a kitchen-turnedliving-space that provides the perfect backdrop for extravagant entertaining or cosy nights in.

“The quality of the kitchen is the same as a top Italian designer kitchen, but it cost a fraction of the price.” Harriet, homeowner

4 Lighting is everything. Make sure the light hits where you need to see – for example, on the countertops, island, and hob. Heavy pendant lighting can get in the way or break the flow, so be careful of picking something OTT. 5 Don't put in a big and expensive extractor fan. Get an in-built ventilation system on the ceiling. It doesn’t cost much and will keep the space looking sleek.
