Welcome to Downtown Burj Dubai

The beating heart of the city and the location of choice for this summer’s discerning traveller...

Before a single flagstone was laid it was billed as the most prestigious square kilometre on earth. And as the final flourishes are added, these words seem less like a bold boast designed to inspire investor confidence and more like an apt description. This is Downtown Burj Dubai, a mini metropolis comprised of arresting Arabesque architecture, hip hotels, superb shopping, world-class attractions and, at its heart,

downtown supplement.indd 3

the stunning, sky-scraping Burj Dubai, the world’s tallest tower and an icon of the city as a whole. All of which combine to make this the ultimate destination to visit this summer. Though it’s undoubtedly the tallest attraction in the Downtown area, Burj Dubai has to share top billing with The Dubai Mall when it comes to being the area’s biggest attraction. It houses more stores than any mall on the

Elsewhere Downtown there’s Souk Al Bahar, which is traditional in style but ultra modern in substance thanks to a superb spread of international restaurants and late-night lounges. Downtown Burj Dubai from A to Z

Love Letters 26 reasons why you’ll fall for Downtown Burj Dubai...

C

A

Is for Aquarium. There was a time when in-mall attractions amounted to someone handing out sampler foodstuffs. Now there’s the Dubai Aquarium, an awesome attraction at The Dubai Mall. Here you can peer through the world’s largest aquarium window at over 33,000 creatures – everything from outsized sand tiger sharks to eagle-like stingrays and poker-faced groupers – or take a stroll through the fish-filled, water-ringed tunnel, where you just might see divers feeding the fish. Outstanding.

B

Is for the sky-scraping Burj Dubai. Every major city has its landmarks – London its Big Ben, New York its Statue of Liberty and Paris its Eiffel Tower – but topping them all, in terms of sheer size, at least, is Burj Dubai, home to the first Armani Hotel and the crowning glory of the

downtown supplement.indd 6

City of Gold. Its needle-like structure punctures the clouds and provides an awe-inspiring, postcard-perfect sight for visitors to Dubai. When it officially opens later this year, an observation deck on the tower’s 124th floor will offer visitors the best aerial views of the city.

Is for Cafés, of which Downtown Burj Dubai has an unbeatable selection. Yes there’s the usual offering of big-name brands like Starbucks and Caribou Coffee, but there’s also a high proportion of choice picks, too. There’s the marvellous Xpresso at The Address Downtown Burj Dubai, which you’ll find on the promenade from where you have a fine view of The Dubai Fountain. Another terrific option is Souk Al Bahar’s Dean & DeLuca, the Manhattan favourite where deep-filled, deli-style sandwiches are the order of the day. And then there’s Carluccio’s in The Dubai Mall try the brilliant antipasti with a side order of oven-fresh focaccia.

D

Is for the monolithic The Dubai Mall. Nowhere else on earth does shopping malls quite like Dubai and the world’s media dined out for weeks when news of The Dubai Mall’s grand ambitions landed on their news desks. At over

5/31/2009 6:17:55 PM

12 million square feet it’s the largest in the world and boasts all manner of world class attractions. But it’s the stores that really make the mall, all 1,200 of them – 165 of which are brands’ flagship outlets. Lovers of haute couture will have a particular weakness for the mall’s label-loaded Fashion Avenue.

E

Is for Esca, the delightfully decked out all-day dining restaurant at Qamardeen Hotel. It’s a testament to the skill of the chefs here that no matter what time of day you drop in for a feed you’ll be guaranteed a wonderful meal. That’s especially true in the evening, when you can sit outdoors beside a lovely turquoise pool while feasting from a huge spread of mainly Italian delights. Splendid.

F

Is for FAI, the brilliant lounge at The Palace - The Old Town, where seeand-be-seeners congregate after work for a relaxed drink in the beautiful, Asian-themed surroundings. FAI’s motto is ‘Encircled by water, enlivened by fire’ – the water is the Burj Dubai Lake and the fire comes from the

downtown supplement.indd 7

torches which are dotted about the space. You can sit indoors but the real joy comes from taking a seat on the terrace and taking in the jaw-dropping views of The Dubai Fountain at work, as chill-out tunes play in the background. If you’re really looking to splash out you can buy a ‘Pinctada’ drink for Dhs4,884, which also gets you a voucher entitling you to a beautiful South Sea Pearl pendant from Pinctada. Ideal if you’re looking to treat a special someone…

Downtown Burj Dubai are the ultimate attraction for grown ups, then Hamley’s in The Dubai Mall is the destination par excellence for kids. It’s helped fire the imaginations of children since 1760, when it first opened its doors in central London and its Middle East branch is every bit as enchanting. We’re talking over 100,000 toys, impromptu musical interludes and magic shows performed by perma-smiling staff.

G

Is for Galeries Lafayette. Paris is often hailed as the fashion capital of the world. A city that’s home to the fashion houses of Coco Chanel, Balenciaga, Louis Vuitton and, since 1893, Galeries Lafayette, a multi-level masterpiece that offers up floor after floor of fantastic designer garb to the city’s sartorially-minded citizens. The Dubai Mall is now home to the department store’s first foreign outpost, another designer brand-filled emporium in the mould of its mother store. Have those credit cards at the ready.

H

Is for Hamley’s. And if the fabulous hotels in

I

Is for Ice, which forms the Olympicsized Dubai Ice Rink at The Dubai Mall. Yes, that’s right, this summer you can chill out in every sense of the term, strapping on skates to cruise gracefully across the ice - or flailing around in a desperate attempt to stay upright. If the latter seems the most likely scenario, help is at hand: classes are held every day of the week, so by the end of summer you can be a budding Torvill or Dean.

5/31/2009 6:18:02 PM

J

Is for Jets, as in super-powerful jets of water that shoot a staggering 500ft into the sky and cover a length equivalent to three football fields. This is The Dubai Fountain, the city’s bigger, bolder and better answer to the Bellagio’s world-famous fountain in Las Vegas. Like the Bellagio’s watery wonder, The Dubai Fountain puts on a spectacular show at regular timeslots throughout the night, with the jets choreographed to a fittingly-grand soundtrack. What’s more, Dubai’s tourists and residents can take in the sight from the comfort of any number of fantastic cafes, restaurants and lounges. Exceptional.

K

Is for Karma Kafé, Souk Al Bahar’s superb restaurant/lounge from Raymond Visan, the man behind the equally cool Buddha Bar chain of outlets. Like Buddha Bar, Karma Kafé offers up Asian-fusion food of the highest order, so prepare your tastebuds for an onslaught of exquisite flavours. Try the seriously scrumptious curries - we’re partial to the duck-laced version - backed up with fluffy naan bread fresh from the oven. Once the sun settles down for the evening, Karma Kafé comes alive, with some of the city’s best DJs invited to spin their stuff on the decks. And while they’re doing that,

downtown supplement.indd 8

a supremely gifted mixologist can be seen shaking up a storm, serving up vibrant mocktails to a long line of pretty people. The kind of people who help to make this venue a true hotspot. Enjoy.

L

Is for Love. Downtown Burj Dubai is so overloaded with heart-tugging hotspots that it’s easy for any regular Joe to make like Don Juan. If you’re looking to dangle a diamond under her nose and pop the ultimate question, you may want to follow in the footsteps of one enterprising Romeo who proposed in front of an audience of multi-hued fish at The Dubai Mall’s

awesome aquarium recently. For the less brave, romantic restaurants include Thiptara at The Palace - The Old Town, Hukama at The Address Downtown Burj Dubai and, if only for its lakeside terrace, Rivington Grill at Souk Al Bahar, where you can get down on bended knee just as The Dubai Fountain splashes into action.

M

Is for Movies. As seen on the 22 screens at Dubai’s biggest cinema complex, Reel Cinemas located at The Dubai Mall. And this summer’s a fantastic time to catch a film – in between shopping at The Dubai Mall and Souk

5/31/2009 6:18:05 PM

Al Bahar and eating out in the neighbourhood’s myriad restaurants – as the blockbusters will be coming thick and fast. There’s the much-awaited Terminator Salvation with Christian Bale, he of the hair-trigger temper. Then there’s the latest instalment of Harry Potter, Kate Winslet vehicle The Reader and, for kids, the delights of animated tall tale Ice Age 3.

N

Is for Neos, the highest bar in the city, located on the 63rd floor of The Address Downtown Burj Dubai. The scenery is simply astonishing: the floor-to-ceiling windows wrap around the whole bar, giving you 360 degrees of jaw-dropping views. Take a table at 6pm and get lost in the sight of the Burj Dubai piercing the skyline as the sun sets. The décor is as opulent as it comes – exquisite chandeliers and sleek lines, gleaming silver pillars and a central bar lined with designer chairs, where you can perch up and mingle with the in-crowd who flock here each night. If you’re feeling peckish, order some caviar, oysters or wagyu beef to satisfy your appetite while you soak up the atmosphere.

downtown supplement.indd 9

O

Is for the Old Town, the wonderful residential district at Downtown Burj Dubai that is setting the standard for new-build communities in the city. This development has been built with inspiration from Dubai’s architectural past – you can clearly see the beautiful old honeycoloured windtowerand-courtyard houses of Bastakia reflected in the collection of exquisite low and mid-rise buildings. The facilities are outstanding – including beautiful infinity pools and every sporting court and field you can imagine – and the finishing is perfect. Once you’ve fallen in love with the district, why not move in?

P

Is for Pampering, which you’ll get in blissfully large amounts at the spas at The Address Downtown Burj Dubai and The Palace - The Old Town. Over at The Spa at The Address you’ll find reflexology, Thai ayurveda and shiatsu, as well as Hawaiian and Balinese massages.

There’s a dedicated room for aromatherapy treatments as well as a cold room to help stimulate your circulation before your massage. And until August 31 this summer there are some superb offers in place – book a treatment and you’ll get access to the five-tiered swimming pool and the fitness centre for the whole day, as well as a Dhs100 voucher for your next visit. Meanwhile at The Palace - The Old Town there are a host of touches you won’t find in most spas, including Oriental bath houses equipped with hammam tables. We recommend booking yourself in for one of their wonderful cleansing body wraps.

Q

Is for Quick, which is what you’ll have to be to snap up the sensational room rates on offer at each of Downtown Burj Dubai’s hotels. Dhs500 buys you a night’s stay at boutique abode Qamardeen Hotel, Dhs550 a room at Al Manzil Hotel, Dhs700 will grant you a night in the opulent The Palace - The Old Town and for just Dhs800 you can stay in one of the world’s hippest properties,

The Address Downtown Burj Dubai. What’s more, all of these prices include complimentary access to The Dubai Mall’s coolest attractions, including Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo and Dubai Ice Rink. How’s that for great value?

R

Is for the exceptional Rivington Grill. It wasn’t so long ago that the mere mention of English food left a bad taste in the mouth - quite literally. But thanks to the likes of Gordon Ramsay and Heston Blumenthal, Brit

chips before you deliberate for an age over which of the reassuringly calorific desserts to order. Our favourite? The sticky toffee pudding, of course.

T

Is for Thiptara, the fine-dining Thai restaurant at The Palace - The Old Town. The hotel is actually home to two of Dubai’s best restaurants, and while we’re

S

Is for the traditional style Souk Al Bahar, which you’ll find next to The Palace - The Old Town. Shop here and you’ll find that a leisurely afternoon’s retail therapy – be sure to get a piece of jewellery custom made for you at Cara – can easily stretch into the evening thanks to some great restaurants and seriously cool after-dark hangouts. Enjoy the best cheeseburger in town at the Meat Co. before heading to Cru to see the evening through with the city’s beautiful folk. cuisine has found favour across the globe, not least in a small corner of Souk Al Bahar. This is where you’ll find Rivington Grill, which serves outstanding examples of British food at its absolute best. We prescribe tucking into a hearty dose of fish and

downtown supplement.indd 10

big fans of Argentinean steakhouse Asado, we go weak at the knees for the Bangkok style seafood at the magical Thiptara. And the setting’s not half bad either – it stands alone amidst the Burj Dubai Lake and is illuminated by flaming

torches. Our favourite dish? The tonguetingling phad prig Thai dam, a harmonious stir-fried mix of soft Alaskan crab and black pepper sauce. Enjoy it with a side of crispy cabbage in sweet and sour sauce. Beautiful.

U

Is for Underwater Zoo. There are three environments to explore in this extraordinary attraction, which is located on Level 2 above Dubai Aquarium at The Dubai Mall. The first is the ‘Rainforest’ where you experience all freshwater exhibits and see catfish, otters, piranhas and water rats. Then there’s the ‘Rocky Shore’ where you can meet a colony of Humboldt penguins, Giant spider crabs and Harbour seals. Finally, kids will love the ‘Living Ocean’ zone, where they can check out leafy sea dragons and moray eels.

V

Is for Vet. It’s just one of the roles that kids can play at KidZania®, a fantastic new edutainment centre at The Dubai Mall.

5/31/2009 6:18:30 PM

W

Is for the Wow factor, which you’ll experience everywhere you go in Downtown Burj Dubai. Whether you’re taking in the incredible views, eating at one of the worldclass restaurants, being spoilt rotten at one of the spas, taking your kids around the huge Dubai Aquarium or just strolling round the stores you’ll constantly find yourself doing a double take at the size, imagination and sheer quality of what’s on offer. This really is the new heart of Dubai.

KidZania is a real world in miniature, where kids can dress up and play at being mechanics, archaeologists, painters, scientists and more, and be paid for their work in the local currency, the KidZo, which they can then spend. At KidZania, children learn life skills, develop their physical and intellectual abilities and – most importantly – have a huge amount of fun. The most imaginative theme park for children we’ve ever heard of.

X

Is for XO sauce, as used in the preparation of the superb sautéed seafood noodles on offer at Hukama,

downtown supplement.indd 11

the top notch Chinese restaurant at The Address Downtown Burj Duabi. Hukama’s a glorious place to indulge in laidback fine dining – other dishes not to miss are the seared Black Angus beef with ginger and pistatchio nuts, the charcoal roasted lamb cutlets and the delightful poached hammour with pickled red peppers. And if you head down on a Friday you can enjoy a traditional Yum Cha, with a spread of delicate dim sum (don’t miss the crystal seafood dumplings) and specialty teas.

Y

Is for Young at Heart. Which is how you’ll feel when you head to

SEGA Republic®, a 76,000 square foot theme park at The Dubai Mall. It’s got a section specially for younger kids but otherwise it’s open to all – so whether you’re 15 or 50 you can get involved with the latest arcade games, plus motion-simulator rides, a spin coaster and sports experiences galore.

Z

Is for Zeta, a beautiful outdoor hangout by the pool at The Address Downtown Burj Dubai. Grab yourself a cold fruit juice and relax with the sun on your back, imposing views of the Burj Dubai to your front and a lovely, five-level infinity pool to your side. Throw in gourmet snacks brought by charming waiters: could this be the most serene spot in the city?

Where to stay

The Address Downtown Burj Dubai Treat yourself to a super stylish summer by checking in to Dubai’s hippest hotel.

Ah, The Address. Wasn’t it recently voted as one of the world’s hottest new hotels? It was indeed. And with good reason, too. It’s arguably Dubai’s in-vogue location right now and the one, ahem, address that every member of the city’s social elite have stored in their Blackberries. So how does it differ from other hotels? Well, your stay will be personalised – the hotel practices the idea that one

size fits one – so it’s every bit the home away from home, provided that is that your home is a beautiful, high-designed building replete with the most incredible amenities and a near-army of exceptional staff on hand to serve you. Erm, I wish. Tell me about those amenities… There’s a quite brilliant eleven room spa – ladies will love the nail suite – a five-tiered swimming pool, a dedicated club for kids and a glut of excellent eateries. Enjoy an outstanding Chinese meal at Hukama or select from a sophisticated menu of Asian, Indian, Arabian, Japanese (the sushi is superb) or Mediterranean cuisine at the ever-so-stylish Fazaris. What’s more, Neos, the 63rd floor sky lounge, is now the incrowd’s venue of choice. I don’t think I’d want to leave. Just as well then that the hotel has done away with the traditional check-out time of noon – book a suite or club

room and you can stay in your room for 24hrs, regardless of your check-in time. How do I book? Call +971 (0) 4 423 8888 or email stay@theaddress.com

Al Manzil Hotel

Experience traditional Arabian hospitality and the finest of modern comforts in the locals’ favourite this summer.

I’m guessing Al Manzil is very Arabic in style? Yes, it is, but while that suggests it’s very traditional it’s very contemporary, too. We’re talking good-sized, super-stylish rooms that offer the guest much in the way of modern innovations – the television screen swivels 360 degrees so you can watch it from anywhere in the room, including the large open-plan bathroom – while making more than a nod to Arabia with some beautifully ornate fixtures and furnishings.

What other attractions are of note? Well first off there’s a wonderful, seductively-lit Courtyard where locals flock of an evening to puff on shisha pipes. And one of the very best breakfasts in town is on offer at the Conservatory Restaurant. The tranquil pool area is something of a suntrap and the hotel even has an adjoining souk. And how about my kids. Is there anything for them to do? There sure is. The summer months see one of the hotel’s rooms transformed into something of a pleasure pit for toddlers: games galore, cartoons aplenty and trained supervisors on hand to protect and entertain – granting you peace of mind as well as peace in general. Excellent. Where do I sign up? Call the hotel on +971 (0) 4 428 5888 or

Qamardeen Hotel

If you’re looking for a break from the hotel norm this summer, head to Dubai’s brilliant boutique abode.

So why should I stay at Qamardeen? Does it offer something a bit different? It certainly does. Supersized, swanky hotels are something of the norm in Dubai but not so fabulous, funky boutique abodes and that’s Qamardeen, in a nutshell. So it’s on the small side, then? Far from it. It still offers just shy of 200 rooms – from queen and twin to executive and deluxe suites – but the fact that there are only five floors above ground level

makes it feel more like a designer apartment block than a hotel. Why ‘designer’? Because from rooms that fuse traditional Arabic designs with modern, minimalist elegance to a gorgeous little haven of a pool area, you’ll see that Qamardeen slaps on the style. Sounds idyllic. Does the in-house restaurant share those same standards? But of course. Sun-soaked during the day, Esca is a wonderfully light, airy space in which to indulge in the feast of varying cuisines it serves up, while by night the mood’s more refined as the menu takes on an Italian flavour – the piping hot, gooey-cheese-topped gourmet pizzas are awesome. Suite Temptation As you’d expect from a hotel that’s easy on the eye, the deluxe suite is a design triumph. But it’s the additional details that make this suite special - we’re particularly fond of the butler’s own kitchen.
