Street art fans are sure to be impressed by the striking graffiti that adorns the buildings in Satwa. Part of an urban art initiative known as Dubai Street Museum, much of the artwork can be found along 2nd December Street. As a result, the area has been transformed into a vibrant open-air gallery that pays tribute to the heritage and history of the United Arab Emirates. This particular mural depicts a group of Emirati children hoop rolling.

Unite with Tomorrowland

Glow sticks at the ready. The mother of all electronic dance music festivals, Belgium’s Tomorrowland, will be broadcast live via satellite in eight countries around the world in July, including in Dubai at Festival City Arena.

Three of the world’s top DJs – Armin Van Buuren, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike and Kshmr – will headline the show by working their magic on the Tomorrowland Mainstage.

Meanwhile, Martin Solveig, Tom Swoon, Franky Rizardo, Ferreck Dawn, Robert Falcon, Mikael Weermets, Siege, Arcade 82 and Barry Force will entertain audiences live in Dubai on the Unite stage.

Try Turkish pide at Babaji For a delicious interpretation of the humble flatbread, head to Babaji. The newly-opened Turkish pide (pronounced pea-dhay) restaurant by Alan Yau brings this timeless Middle Eastern favourite to life by baking it in a wood fired oven before adding a range of delicious toppings, such as chargrilled courgettes, prawns and walnuts.

Located at City Walk, the venue marks Babaji’s first international venue outside of London. Diners can soak up the vibrant atmosphere, which is brought to life by large-scale pide ovens and a bustling open kitchen concept, complemented by its trademark Turkish hospitality.

Founded by an Armenian family in Beirut in 1996, this Lebanese-Armenian restaurant has expanded across the Middle East – and even to New York.

Majestic architecture, iridescent blue water and a cityscape backdrop – we highlight some of the reasons why this man-made island makes its mark Large enough to be seen from space, Palm Jumeirah attracts tourists in their droves due to its impressive blend of hotels, restaurants and attractions. This stunning man-made archipelago is designed in the shape of a palm tree and comprises a trunk with 17 fronds, encircled by a crescent-shaped island.

As well a being one of the most popular places to stay in the emirate, Atlantis The Palm, Dubai lures day guests eager to explore Aquaventure Waterpark. Get the adrenaline pumping by braving the rides and slides, including the near-vertical Leap of Faith, meet the sea lions and kick back and relax at the 700-metre-long private beach.

There are six dining experiences to choose from, including signature outlet Great British Restaurant (GBR), which serves up everything from cod and chips to Lancashire hot pot in a stunning setting overlooking the Arabian Gulf.

Join in the fun at Club Vista Mare (nakheel.com), a beachfront promenade of restaurants, lounges and cafés. It is the newest addition to Palm Jumeirah, offering spectacular views of the cityscape. Among the dining venues is Breeze, a beach grill concept that has a raw bar and deli counter. There’s also Aji (pronounced ‘ah-hee’), which specialises in Japanese-Peruvian (Nikkei) cuisine as well as Gursha, which is the first Ethiopian restaurant in the area. Each restaurant has indoor and outdoor terrace seating, with some featuring space directly on the beach.

For a quick snack before you leave, head to The Boardwalk, which stretches the entire length of the 11-kilometre crescent and is home to around 20 food trucks serving everything from fish and chips to falafel, and spaghetti to shawarma. Tuck into your favourite food before taking a stroll along the waterfront, which is a popular spot for cyclists, joggers and, of course, tourists on a quest for the perfect selfie.

How Dubai earned its namesake as the City of Gold.

he emirate may make headlines for its extravagant offerings, from glamorous nightspots bedecked in gold leaf to edible gold dust sprinkled onto gourmet dishes, but Dubai’s links to the precious metal are born from a rich heritage.

The UAE’s strategic location at the centre of global trade – and namely its proximity to India, Africa and China – has long provided a major advantage in serving the gold industry. Indeed, it was Dubai’s prosperity as a trading port that first brought the rich commodity to its shores. In the early 1900s, the destination’s trade-friendly environment inspired a handful of merchants to set up a marketplace near Dubai Creek where the wooden dhow trade was flourishing. The move supported the import and export of gold and, as such, their self-made souk began to thrive.

Today, the Gold Souk in Deira is one of the largest retail gold markets in the world home to hundreds of vendors. It is a popular first stop for those who want to shop for gold in a traditional setting. The busy marketplace provides a fascinating glimpse into those historic trading days, with a dazzling showcase of jewellery and gemstones. If you’re not an expert, don’t fret, as the government carefully regulates the quality of gold, so you can be sure that your purchases will be genuine. Just be prepared to barter for the best price.

A more modern, air-conditioned alternative is Gold & Diamond Park situated on Sheikh Zayed Road, near FGB metro station. It may be difficult to imagine but, just 13 years ago, Downtown Dubai didn’t even exist. The area was occupied by an abandoned army barracks, before Emaar Properties pushed the button on a US$20 billion plan to completely redevelop it.

“The entire development was conceptualised and its masterplan unveiled in 2004, with the goal of developing a new lifestyle central and

“A stroll along the pretty, horseshoe-shaped Mohammed Bin Rashid Boulevard is the best way to get your bearings as it loops around all the major attractions, from Burj Khalifa to The Dubai Mall, via Dubai Opera.

Follow the sculpture trail, which will steer you past an eclectic mixture of Arabian and modern art pieces.

“A special way to experience Burj Khalifa is by reserving a table at At.mosphere. The restaurant and lounge sits on Level 122 and provides stunning views across the city. Also keep an eye out for events at The Annex, Burj Khalifa on Level 11, which has played host to high-profile exhibitions, including those featuring the works of Picasso and Miró.

“Label lovers will find all they need in The Dubai Mall’s Fashion Avenue, while Level Shoes is the place to go for footwear. Refuel with a camel-milk coffee at Al Majlis Coffee Shop before heading to Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo to marvel at the aquatic animals.

“The Dubai Fountain can be seen from many of the mall’s eateries, but my favourite spot is Thiptara at Palace Downtown, which serves delicious Thai food.

“Another lakeside spot worth visiting is the small but immaculate Burj Park. This pretty green space has plenty of sculptures to admire and a packed programme of pop-up events.”

From the charming Arabian neighbourhoods to the high rises that punctuate the skyline, Dubai’s intriguing blend of architecture represents its evolution from tiny fishing village to major international city. Today, the emirate is a beacon for building design, with its numerous skyscrapers standing tall. On a rare foggy morning, the structures can even appear to pierce the clouds.

Boom time for architecture in the emirate began in the 1970s, when Dubai’s fortunes were given a major boost thanks to the discovery of oil and the pioneering vision of the ruling family. Over the next decade, the foundations were laid for much of the infrastructure that can be found in the city today.

One of the most breathtaking modern developments is Dubai Marina (pictured here) – a 50 million square foot Rivierastyle waterfront development that features a large canal spanning 3.5 kilometres with access to the sea from both ends. It’s a cosmopolitan mixture of high-rises, hotels, shopping and entertainment facilities, including Dubai Marina Towers – six towers named after precious stones (Murjan, Al Mass and Fairooz) and Arabic fragrances (Mesk, Yass and Anbar).

A top destination for foodies is Pier 7 in Dubai Marina, a multistorey tower that’s home to a diverse selection of restaurants.

The 'twisting' pedestrian bridge at Dubai Water Canal

One of the emirate’s newest marvels is the �twisting’ pedestrian bridge at Dubai Water Canal. It is suspended 8.5 metres above the water and supported by a twisting truss that stretches along the entire 140-metre-long pathway. ▲

The city’s first skyscraper, the 39-storey Dubai World Trade Centre was inaugurated in 1979. Designed by British architect John Harris, it remains an iconic landmark along Sheikh Zayed Road, although it now competes for attention among the numerous other structures that have been constructed in the city.

They are now home to some of the city’s most cutting edge design and creative firms, as well as The Design Quarter, where visitors will find homegrown restaurant concepts, innovate boutiques and unique art installations. THE STORY SO FAR

“d3 started as a vision and has now flourished into a thriving design community within the UAE,” proudly states Mohammad Al Shehhi, COO of d3. “Our ambition was to pioneer a location where passion and purpose come together to connect each area of the design sector and drive forward the region’s design community and the growth of the UAE’s design industry.”

According to a MENA Design Outlook Report, the sector is expected to be worth an impressive US$35.8 billion (Dhs131.75 billion) in 2019. Locally produced design goods and services comprise 35 percent of the total market size. With this in mind, the partners at d3 mainly represent segments such as fashion (33%), design (10%), graphic design and visual arts (13%) and interior design (26%).

“We want to inspire, engage and enable every creative entity within our community, as well as visitors and tourists, through the A temporary installation at d3

exciting programme of events and activities that we host each year,” says Al Shehhi.

The district’s first phase, The Design Quarter, is home to more than 415 licensed business partners and over 200 operational partners, bringing around 6,000 creative professionals to its 11 buildings. Inspired

by Miami Design District and New York’s Meatpacking District, d3 has courted an eclectic mixture of tenants ripe to discover.

“At d3 we are home to an array of creative partners, from small design start-ups to iconic global brands,” says Al Shehhi. “Our design quarter offers a unique dining experience with several homegrown innovative concepts, world class chefs, retail stores and design galleries showcasing regional talent.”

Key diary dates for visitors include Downtown Design (November 2017) and Design Days Dubai (March 2018), a fair dedicated to collectible and limited-edition furniture and design objects.

Earlier this year, d3 also played host a cutting edge new version of Fashion Forward Dubai (FFWD) – the definitive fashion platform for Dubai and the Middle East held bi-annually in April and October – featuring runway shows and presentations by the best couture, ready-to-wear and accessories designers in the Middle East. There’s also Sole DXB, a platform for all the latest news in footwear, fashion, design and alternative culture in the Middle East.

For now, make the most of the pedestrianised zones and wander from one section to another, admiring the street art and market installations as you go.

EMERGING DESIGN TRENDS

Isabel Pintado, managing director of design firm Wilson Associates, shares her expert take on Dubai Design District and the design scene in Dubai.

“The carefully curated selection of firms and wide range of large, medium and small businesses at d3 have been accepted and chosen to form part of the community,” she says.

“Most of the firms have joined with a similar mission: to take part in the various events and to integrate and collaborate with each other to further enhance the village ethos."

Of Dubai’s design credentials, Pintado is effusive: “Design is very much at the forefront of the UAE and local designers.

Product designers in particular are producing outstanding work – contemporary designs that reflect a true design aesthetic as well as their roots and passions.

If I were to name just a couple, I would highlight jewellery designer Nadine Kanso and furniture designer Khalid Shaffar.”

In terms of trends, Pintado has noticed a distinct shift: “Dubai in general has been very successful in adapting and absorbing international trends in all areas of design, ranging from food and beverage to retail. We have moved away from the excessively ornamented interiors and, if I had to identify only one strong trend of the moment, it would be simplicity. We see interiors that do not seem to have been designed and environments where the arrangements appear random and basic. However, it is important to note that achieving this look takes enormous skill."

She adds: “The letters of the Dubai Font typeface that are dotted along Sheikh Zayed Road are a superb example of how prominent design is in Dubai right now and how simplicity is very much present. Every time I spot them it makes me smile."

Interiors enthusiasts should stop by Finasi (finasi.ae). Founded in Italy in the 1970s, the company has delivered projects for a variety of leading clients and distributes sought-after brands such as Armani/Casa, Ghandia Blasco and Varaschin in the region.

Foodies will find plenty to delight. One Life Kitchen and Café (onelifedxb.com), developed by a Dubai based entrepreneur, is a firm favourite among the health conscious crowd.

All the food is made daily on-site and the all-day breakfast options, such as gluten-free pancakes, are not to be missed.

New restaurant Molecule (molecule. restaurant) is also generating a lot of buzz with its ‘bistronomy’ concept. Hailed as the next big food movement, bistronomy focuses on combining bold and rich flavours, using fresh ingredients served in a casual setting.

The venue, which takes visitors on a sensory journey, is the brainchild of executive chef Udo Moreau.

Mains include fish and crisps with tartare sauce while lobster roll features in the ‘Naughty But Nice’ section. The interior has been designed in collaboration with leading talent in the region, including Nadine Kanso and Fadi Sarieddine, so is not to be missed. ◆

For Autumn/Winter 2017/18, the house launched its sixth prêt-à-porter collection which introduces a modern and feminine take on the military look showcased on flowing silhouettes, mermaid shapes and voluminous trains with contrasting structured sleeves. Rami Al Ali Couture is available at Harvey Nichols, Mall of The Emirates and Galeries Lafayette and Bloomingdale’s at The Dubai Mall.

Another favourite among those in the know is Syrian designer Zeina Zain Al Abdeen, who curates the Dubai-based womenswear label Zeina Zain. This contemporary ready-to-wear label, inspired by her travels, is ideal for those seeking a chic, flattering and feminine look. Her Autumn/Winter 2017 collection takes a cue from powerful Spanish art and architecture and the work of Antoni Gaudi. Key pieces include loose fitted, asymmetric midi and maxi length gowns enhanced with statement ruffles.

Those who aren’t afraid of colour should check out KAGE (bykage.com), which was founded in 2009 by Basma Abu Ghazaleh, a Palestinian Emirati born and raised in Dubai. The Spring/Summer 2017 collection is inspired by the 1980s television cartoon series Rainbow Brite. As such, the mix and match style garments are bursting with pastel pink, blue, green and yellow teamed with classic neutrals.

Choose your favourites from the assortment of dresses, tops, skirts, tees, tanks and jumpsuits. Alternatively, make a statement this season with a maxi dress or full-length skirt. The fabrics used are mostly cotton and viscose, which are light and airy enough to wear in summer.

Lastly, step outside of your comfort zone with OTT, whose Spring/Summer collection will take you on a journey through the Asian orient and the art of chinoiserie. Although the UAE-based designers wish to remain anonymous, it is known that the label was started by two best friends who began by collaborating on tee-shirts. As well as checking out the region’s top designers, make sure you pay a visit to some of the unique shopping destinations in the city.

Nestled at the heart of old Jumeriah, Comptoir 102 (comptoir102.com) creates a homely environment, featuring an eclectic mix of fashion, interior design and furniture from around the globe. It is the brainchild of Parisian tastemaker Emmanuelle Sawko who, as director and co-founder of the concept, brings a bohemian mixture of fashion, jewellery and home décor, including serendipitous finds from her travels. It’s a great place to go for edgy and cool fashion from around the world.

The award-winning multi-brand fashion and lifestyle concept store Sauce is also well worth a visit. It’s a hit among style seekers due to its curated mixture of contemporary regional and international brands, complemented by unique pieces by up-and-coming designers, limited edition collaborations and its own inhouse designs entitled BY Sauce. Brands you can find at its The Village Mall and The Dubai Mall locations include Filles a Papa, Zayan the Label, Alice McCall, Rixo Mira Mikati, Rebecca Vallance and Zimmermann. There are a number of brand extensions to explore too, including the Sauce On-Sea at The Beach, JBR,

which stocks everything from swimwear to loungewear, beach bags, donut floats, quirky sandals and more, with a focus on exclusive regional collaborations and new international collections from the likes of Rhode Resort, Caren Lola and Hadid Eyewear.

Another top stop off is Symphony (enuae.bysymphony.com) at The Dubai Mall, which is curated by Emirati entrepreneur Salama Alabbar. Born in 2010, the luxurious boutique is a joy to shop and is regarded as a hotspot for discovering local talent.

ONES TO WATCH

The emirate is not short of fresh, young talent either. There is a new wave of designers hitting the scene thanks to ESMOD Dubai – a branch of the prestigious ESMOD International Fashion Institutes & University Group in Paris – which aims to offer aspiring designers hands-on training that provides them with the practical skills needed to make their own garments and build a viable business. Courses include everything from the popular BA Fashion Design Undergraduate Program to Fashion Marketing, Luxury Brand Management and Fashion Buying as well as masterclasses in haute couture, corset, draping and wedding dresses – not to mention the one and only iFASH modest wear

programme in the Middle East. As such, ESMOD Dubai is celebrated for shaping the future leaders of the fashion industry while actively contributing to the creative and economic growth of the UAE. Currently, there are 350 students attending, representing more than 70 different nationalities.

“If you don’t know how to make a garment then you are not a designer,” says its CEO, Denis Ravizza, who has an impressive background in creative direction and art direction for leading brands including Jean-Paul Gaultier, Yves Saint Laurent and Esprit. “We are proud to say that we have introduced 47 brands to the fashion economy of the UAE.” Success stories include Lubna Al Zakwani who co-founded her label Endemage, along with her sister Nadia Al Zakwani. There’s also Lilian Afshar, whose clutch bags caught the attention of Vogue, while Reema Albanna, founder of Reemami, won Arab Women’s Young Designer award in 2016. Madiyah Al Sharqi is another top talent to watch.

“These kids are proving that what we do works,” says Ravizza. Check out their creations at the new Pôlette Concept Store at City Walk, which launched in April, providing students with a platform from which to sell their collections straight out of graduate school. As the first and only retail start-up platform in the world to launch the fashion brands of university students, it’s a gem for getting ahead in the style stakes. ◆

Spotlight on CanElla hoStal Canella Hostal was among the first batch of graduates to complete the Fashion Design Undergraduate Program at ESMOD Dubai in 2009.

She credits Pôlette Concept Store with providing a fantastic platform from which to showcase her label Canella Hostal (CH) to the Middle East market while, at the same time, providing an invaluable window to the global fashion industry.

“Through Pôlette, I have been able to convert my passion and

dreams into a reality, now creating two collections per year for both women and men,” she explains. “The concept store is such a fantastic initiative for emerging talent and, for me, it has been integral to starting my own label.
