Welcome to Maldives

I

f a ‘no news, no shoes’ rule sounds like your idea of holiday bliss, then look no further than the Maldives. The castaway-style sentiment adopted by many (but by no means all) of the country’s luxurious resorts is ideal for those who need to switch off, if only for a week or so. And while it is the planet’s flattest country, staying there is nothing short of an uplifting experience. The spectacular scenery will make you feel a world away from home, as thrilling watersports, pampering spa treatments and fine fare compete for your attention. The great thing about the Maldives, however, is that you can go at your own pace. So whether you want to catch up on zzz’s, advance your scuba diving skills, or are simply seeking some quality time together with loved ones, the wonderful resorts described inside this guide are sure to bring your dreams to life.

GETTING THERE Maldives is served by a number of GCCbased airlines, including Emirates, Etihad Airways and flydubai. Flights arrive into Malé International Airport, and the onward journey to your desired resort depends on how far away it is. Some are close enough to zip to on a speedboat, while others will organise a seaplane for a seamless connection to your destination. THE WEATHER FORECAST The equatorial climate features two main seasons, with sunshine assured in both. From November to April the weather is fairly dry, whereas May to October brings with it the occasional brief rain shower, after which the sun will reappear to dry things up. Daytime temperatures hover around 30°C and dip to the mid-20s at night.

TASTE: The unique elements extend to the ample dining options, which include So Starstruck, comprising four tables atop the Maldives’ first over-water observatory. But we really love So Cool, a roomful of handmade chocolates and ice creams that are yours to indulge in on a complimentary basis (don’t tell the kids, but it never closes.)

PLAY: Cycle across the island to the open-air, floating cinema, where you’ll be handed a pair of Bluetooth headphones to avoid any sound effects disturbing the turtles. And did we mention the slides? UNWIND: Treatments at the spa are tailored to suit, and there's also a gym, yoga pavilion, sauna and steam rooms to enjoy. There’s no better way to end a day, however, than aboard a private sunset dolphin cruise. 29 Hotels & Resorts

cruises, big-game fishing, snorkelling and watersports galore. The atmosphere is buzzing too, with daily entertainment in the form of a live band, disco and Maldivian cultural show. UNWIND: The Cube Spa’s therapists offer a range of treatments from various corners of the world to ensure a sublime spa experience. Simply lay back, relax and unwind your body and mind.
