HOW PARMIGIANI FLEURIER AND LALIQUE ARE FORGING A PARTNERSHIP TO STAND THE TEST OF TIME With two new horological objets d’art unveiled at SIHH earlier this year, the burgeoning partnership between Parmigiani Fleurier and Lalique is transforming the decorative watch world. As they tour Dubai with Clock 15 Days (2012), SIR talks to Lalique’s CEO Silvio Denz to find out more. What does the partnership aim to promote?

The idea with the collaboration is to promote our craftsmanship. There are a lot of watches and crystal companies that make mass-produced items and use machines. However, we just use human beings, the process and art of hands; every piece is handcrafted – both the movement and the crystal. So every piece is actually unique and no two will be exactly the same. This is the particularity of our watches and the Lalique projects. What other skills merged with this partnership?

In the first place we both aim for craftsmanship. Parmigiani Fleurier is known for very complicated, limited edition watches, which use the best craftsmanship in the watch industry. Quality is a very important issue. So is tradition, because even though Parmigiani is a relatively young brand in the watch industry, the knowledge and expertise of [President] Michelle Parmigiani goes 10


RECEPTION back hundreds of years as he studied the old movements of watches. We have these same attributes from René Lalique – tradition, craftsmanship, quality and heritage, which are all important. Was the idea of a carriage clock a new concept for Lalique, like it was with Parmigiani Fleurier?

It is actually something that Lalique had already done. At the end of the 19th century René Lalique focused on pocket watches but in 1926 created the original Le Jour et La Nuit clock with two facets – one that reflects day and one that reflects night. So the idea of the carriage clock is something that Lalique already did almost 100 years ago. And when we were talking with [Parmigiani Fleurier CEO] Jean-Marc Jacot we discussed making a clock together because they had this marvellous 15 Day watch, which Jean-Marc suggested we create the crystal for. It’s not only a clock, it’s also a sculpture. So the new Le Jour et La Nuit clock is a remake of the 1926 original?

Yes, and the two models of Le Jour et La Nuit use René Lalique’s moulding techniques from 100 years ago. The project consists of two table clocks, the Soleil de Gaïa clock and the Serpent clock, which depict the themes of Day and Night. On one side the woman is darker and depicts the night and on the other side the man is lighter and means day.

Women play a key role in Lalique’s glassware. How is this portrayed in the new Toric Lépine model?

This really is a unique clock and took around 2,270 hours to make. It’s a complicated pocket watch as well as a sculptural decorative piece, with the watch sitting in a crystal frame. The crystal plate carries the Masque de Femme – the face of the woman – an iconic René Lalique design. The marvellous thing about this is that wherever you turn the eyes follow you. They are plated with platinum or silver leaf, which reflects the light, and covered with 22-carat diamonds. How did your personal collection of Lalique glassware start?

In 1980 I started a chain of perfumeries and I became interested in Lalique when I was looking for inspiration for new fragrance bottles. When I was in Geneva 25 years ago I bought ten Lalique bottles at an auction – before I knew anything about the brand. Because of his background and success as a jeweller René Lalique was the first designer to make decorative perfume bottles and I found them very attractive. How large is your collection now?

In the 1990s I had the chance to buy three big collections – two from American collectors and one from René’s granddaughter Marie Claude Lalique. That’s where 80% of my collection came from and I have between 750 to 800 pieces. He created 900 to 950 pieces but there will always be some missing. Is this why you bought the company in 2008?

When I bought it I made a very big distinction between being a collector and buying the company. I bought the company purely because of the fragrance business, which had been largely neglected since the 1950s. Because of my background and expertise in the fragrance business I knew I could quadruple the turnover – using my sources and distribution channels to increase the sales. While we had to downsize during the recession that actually gave us an immediate float and we have been profitable since 2010. ot many women can say they’ve been to the North Pole, climbed some of the world’s highest mountains and trekked across the Sahara on horseback. These might sound like the feats of a seasoned explorer or Olympian rather than an interior designer but they’re actually the intrepid achievements of Katharine Pooley. Conversely, having an innate sense of adventure and discovery goes handin-hand with interior design. This is a sector that demands imagination and the persistent exploration of materials, manufacturing, technology, colour, decoration and ideas – and for Pooley, projects that take her all over the world. “I’m very proud that we are such an international company,” she reveals, during a recent trip to Dubai. “I am very well travelled but it’s not just a hobby, it’s my life; it’s who I am and it’s my makeup. People can be frightened to visit new places but I’ve worked on projects all over the world. We are not worried about war-

torn countries or if it’s difficult for women to work there; we are happy to go where the challenge takes us.” Pooley grew up Bahrain and has lived in Hong Kong, Singapore, Vietnam, Australia and New York, before settling in England. Her studio and boutique are based in London where she employs an extensive team of 40. They’ve worked all over – English country homes, Scottish castles, Swiss ski chalets, apartments in Singapore, Kuwaiti palaces, hotels in China and even the Royal VIP lounges at Heathrow’s Terminal 5 – which was an adventure that ended up taking her to the Middle East. “That project was how I met my business partner Nasser al Ansari and it is a rather lovely story,” she says. “He came through the VIP lounges and loved what he saw so he approached me and asked if I would open a second boutique and studio in Doha. “I grew up in Bahrain so I am very familiar with the Middle East. My mother has lived there for 40 years and we have spent many holidays in Dubai and Qatar. I know that in Dubai it’s quite easy to ship things, but Doha was different, and even now it lacks high-end interior stores.”


INTERIORS To tempt her to expand in the region, Ansari commissioned her to design his own family home. It worked. Not only did the chairman of Octagon International gain a beautiful family home for his wife and three children, but the city has gained Katharine Pooley Doha, a 3,000-squarefoot luxury design and lifestyle boutique. Pooley’s childhood in the Middle East and her extensive travels have given her an edge over other interior designers trying to crack the market here. “Because I am such an international person myself I am very well versed on how people live and I know the small nuances and particularities that certain nationalities want from a home,” she explains. “I do understand the world and I know what Indians, Russians and Chinese, for example, prefer to have. Some nationalities don’t like baths like the English do but they prefer showers; some like bidets in the bathroom while others

I GREW UP IN BAHRAIN SO I AM VERY FAMILIAR WITH THE MIDDLE EAST don’t use them; Indian households like hand showers. Every nationality is different and I think it’s important to understand all of them so we can get it right. “If you talked to an interior designer in London they probably wouldn’t know what a majlis is or how it should be seated; they don’t understand that men and women do things differently in the Middle East and have private rooms and quarters.” Pooley created separate majlises for Mr and Mrs al Ansari. The women’s majlis is a cosy yet sociable Moroccan-style room where she can have tea with her friends. Soft furnishings in oranges, gold and copper create a warm and rich ambience. Meanwhile, her husband enjoys a large bachelor-pad-type games room with a pool table and a jukebox, plus a reception area with plenty of seating for guests. The bright red felt of the pool table is accentuated with aplomb via small red accents in the cushions, jukebox lights and votive candleholders. “It’s very unusual for a Middle Eastern man to have a room like that,” Pooley adds. “It has the most beautiful joinery with bronze and shagreen inlaid. wanted to surprise his wife with something that was modern and European, yet also fit into the Middle East way of life. In Doha fashion is a little more cutting edge so he wanted something that was impressive – something that makes you go ‘wow’”. To achieve the high standard of quality he wanted, Pooley’s team sourced

I KNOW WHAT CERTAIN NATIONALITIES LOOK FOR IN THE DETAILS everything from Europe – from the marble staircase to the kitchen fittings and all the small finishing touches. However, importing from abroad came with its own problems that her team had to tackle. Because of the difference in temperature, wood from cooler countries has to acclimatise before it’s used so they had to leave it in the Doha heat for five months. “There’s a lot to think about, like direct sunshine staining fabrics, curtains and wall finishes,” adds the designer. “It was quite funny after we put up a really nice fabric wall in his majlis and about three months later he came to me and told me it had been done really badly because it was drooping. It turned out he’d turned off the AC. Unfortunately, in that kind of heat you have to be consistent with the temperature. Once he turned it on again 24


INTERIORS the fabric stiffened like a board. I also got involved with the architecture and helped with spatial allocation. This is actually our forte; there is no point in having a beautiful house if the loo is downstairs and the guests are being entertained upstairs, or the shower door opens onto the loo; you have to get it right.” Four years later, Pooley admits that this first Doha project really boosted her company’s international presence. Now they work on 12 projects a year there, plus others in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman. “We are very lucky with all our overseas projects,” she says, “because we are working with some very special people, including very influential members of royal families all over the world. I love that and they’re always very special to do.” katharinepooley.com

After being mentored for the 2013 show and creating a stool to critical acclaim, she was encouraged to make the switch from fashion to furniture. The fashion influence is evident, with each piece striking a confident pose showing off strong contours, beautiful asymmetry, and highquality marquetry.

P

rague is the city of bachelor parties, picturesque old buildings and the historical capital of Bohemia, but it’s also at the vanguard of architectural design. Over the last five decades the capital of the Czech Republic has expanded in size, bringing in all of its outlying satellite towns, each with their own design styles and quirks. Lying on the outskirts of the city is the newly built Villa Průhonice, an unabashedly modern creation in a very traditional town. Built from scratch by award-winning architecture and interior design company Jestico + Whiles, the villa was designed to stand out. The company’s Associate Director Sean Clifton spoke with SIR about what the owner was looking for. “Like lots of European cities that are expanding, Prague is made up of lots of little towns and villages. This is on the edge of Prague, but very much in the centre of its own small little village called Průhonice, hence the property’s name,” explains Clifton. “The brief was actually to renovate an existing house that was there, that was built around 20 years ago. So that was where we started. But the reality was, once we started looking at it, the house was in fairly poor condition. It was built just after the fall of communism, and good quality materials weren’t really available at that time. So having looked at it in a bit more detail, we weren’t really achieving the kind buildings. And that’s why central Europe breezy, and Clifton utilised many tools of spaces that the client was looking for, to make that happen. He recalls: “The has such a rich architectural history, in the old building. So we concluded that simply because it was always progressive brief was to create a series of spaces that we’d demolish the house and start from were really open and interconnected with in creating new buildings. The owners, a family of four, made Jestico + Whiles aware that their new home needed to be as hightech as possible. This included state-ofthe-art media options as well as the more pragmatic side of energy consumption. Clifton says: “It’s a ‘smart villa’ in lots of ways – in terms of energy, certainly. There’s triple glazing in all of the windows; it’s very highly insulated so it’s got a very low energy output; it’s an A-class energy using building; it’s got under-floor heating, using low temperatures; it has a weather station on the roof that’s continually monitoring internal and external climate and adjusting the systems for that. And the whole house is intelligently wired, so every single plug, switch, cooker, in fact everything electrical, is operable from an iPhone or an iPad, and the music and media systems are all integrated. “They can operate the whole house from one iPad. It’s very clever because the house automatically switches lights off when you’re not in the room, it monitors where people are so it doesn’t always heat places that aren’t being used, and it learns how the house is used. It learns when people are there and not there, and will adjust the heating systems accordingly. The owners have a real interest in technology, but the father is the owner of a large marketing and media company in the Czech Republic, and they work all over Europe, so he’s really into media and wants to be able to stream TV and music all over the house.” So were the clients happy with the final product? It’s hard to imagine the project was anything other than a resounding success. “Absolutely,” beams Clifton. “This was supposed to be the first of two projects. The family spends a lot of time in Spain on holidays, and they wanted to build their ‘dream home’ in Spain, with a view over the sea and that kind of thing. But this turned into the dream home straight away. It was supposed to be a practice run, but they love it so much they don’t want to leave.” jesticowhiles.com dubaisir.com

With Sharjah Biennial 12 underway, curator Eungie Joo shares her vision for the art extravaganza

ver the past two decades, the Sharjah Biennial has grown from a traditional and regionally focused exhibition into the global event it is today. Opened last month, all the works in Sharjah Biennial 12: The past, the present, the possible are considered as part of one conversation, says curator Eungie Joo. “Seeing the works and artists resonate with each other is an interesting process that teaches me a lot about art and ideas,” she says. The curatorial concept stems from a phrase from French philosopher Henri Lefebvre’s 1967 essay The Right to the City, which when translated reads: ‘The past, the present, the possible cannot be separated.’ The curator says she wanted to present works that stepped away from the burden of the past and the nostalgic, and focus instead on the present. “The ideas that frame SB12 come from a conversation with artist Danh Vo about our engagements with contemporary art – and this wording, about new possibilities for social organisation and transcending social and political confinement, is based in that conversation,” she explains. “I think it is important that we as cultural practitioners reflect upon what we do and why, and try to convey to the public the larger stakes of contemporary art. “The past, the present, the possible is very much 36

about admitting a utopic position that values abstraction, formalism, and content with a strong presence of experiential and meditative works. We are living in an extremely perverse and decadent moment of human history and I hope this slightly utopic approach to the present helps us imagine possibilities together.” Beginning with the March Meeting in 2014, the annual discussion forum that runs alongside the JOO WANTED TO PRESENT WORKS THAT STEPPED AWAY FROM THE BURDEN OF THE PAST AND FOCUS INSTEAD ON THE PRESENT

Sharjah Biennial, SB12 has developed over two years of site visits, research trips and production. Joo, meanwhile, says it was her experiences visiting the emirate over the past four years that were her main source of inspiration when curating SB12. “My fascination with the commitment of Sharjah Art Foundation [organiser of the Biennial] led me to select artists and works that I wanted to share with the local public and to invite artists whom I thought would grow from the experience of working here,” she says. Enter more than 50 artists from 25 countries, with over two thirds of the participants commissioned to create site-specific works following research trips or residencies in Sharjah preceding the opening. “Many of the artists are those who I have worked with over

the past 20 years or artists whose work I have been following but never had the chance to work with. So those artists engender a feeling of familiarity and trust that interests me,” reveals Joo. The Biennial takes place in Sharjah, as well as in the city of Kalba on the Gulf of Oman. It strikes a more minimalist chord than previous editions, reflecting the maturation of the country’s art scene, and spreads further into the city than previous editions, with Michael Joo’s new commission featured across Sharjah Creek in a warehouse at Port Khalid, and Hassan Khan’s intervention at The Flying Saucer, an iconic building built in the 1970s. Installations by Mohammed Kazem and mixrice are found within Souq Al Shanasiyah, and Abraham Cruzvillegas’ site-specific sculptures can be seen at the Bird and Animal Market. In Kalba, meanwhile, Adrián Villar Rojas’ massive intervention covers the entire site of the city’s old Ice Factory. The extensive Sharjah Art Foundation Art Spaces – five multi-functional spaces spanning 20,000 square feet in the Sharjah Heritage Area – include new commissions by artists such as Abdullah Al Saadi, Iman Issa, Cinthia Marcelle, Taro Shinoda, Rayyane Tabet and Haegue Yang. Gary Simmons’ Across the Chalkline takes the form of a cricket field for children, while Rirkrit Tiravanija’s untitled 2015 (Eau de Rose of Damascus) transforms Calligraphers’ Studios into a rose garden, rosewater distillery, kitchen and lounge. At Sharjah Art Museum, visitors will discover a dubaisir.com

copper pipe sculpture by conceptual Emirati artist Hassan Sharif, who paved the way for generations of UAE artists by founding the Emirates Fine Art Society in Sharjah back in the ‘80s, and Byron Kim’s newly commissioned City Night. Also on view in the Arts Area is Basel Abbas and Ruanne Abou-Rahme’s mixed-media installation, The Incidental Insurgents at Bait Al Serkal, and Mark Bradford’s Untitled (Buoy) on the façade of Bait Obaid Al Shamsi. Across the various exhibition spaces are major presentations of historic works by senior artists including Etel Adnan, Chung Chang-Sup, Saloua Raouda Choucair, Abdul Hay Mosallam Zarara and Fahrelnissa Zeid. “The works were primarily made from the 1940s to 1990s, but are incredibly relevant today even though the artists were all born before 1930. Together these artists form the backbone of this Biennial,” says Joo. In an emirate that is still in the process of imagining itself through education, culture, religion, heritage and science, Joo acknowledges the commitment of Sharjah Art Foundation in supporting the production of new work in the face of a highly commercialised art world. “They are a key part of the contemporary art infrastructure in the Gulf, but also worldwide,” she comments. “Artists find great opportunity here to embark on new work that has meaningful repercussions on their broader artistic practice.” Sharjah Biennial 12: The past, the present, the possible is on show until June 5; sharjahart.org.

This year, luxury watch brand Vacheron Constantin will mark 260 years of continuous production and innovation with more landmark creations

To do so would require the help of a like-minded individual, so Vacheron enlisted Constantin, who quoted the phrase in their early correspondence. With the two working together so closely, the company name became Vacheron & Constantin. Its watches were now being sold around the world, while at home the employment of inventor GeorgesAuguste Leschot helped to drive innovation further. It was Leschot that came up with the idea of the calibre, and later a pantographic device for engraving even the smallest components. By the end of the 19th century, other achievements included the arrival of the first non-magnetic watch, with a timepiece that could resist magnetic fields for greater accuracy. The brand had also adopted the symbol of the Maltese cross as part of its company logo, inspired by a component of a similar shape located in the watch barrel, designed to limit tension with the mainspring. As if to reinforce its luxury status, a Vacheron & Constantin Lady’s watch was presented as the surprise inside Fabergé’s Third Imperial Egg, dated 1887, while its first boutique opened in Geneva in 1906 and

The last descendent of one of the company’s original founders to be appointed president was Charles Constantin in 1936, and this development actually ended an 80-year period without a family member in charge. Yet the theme of innovation continued, and in 1979 the brand released the world’s most expensive watch, the Kallista, featuring 118 emerald-cut diamonds, originally costing US$5 million and today valued at US$11 million. The 1970s also saw a subtle name change, when the ampersand was dropped to result in the snappier Vacheron Constantin. It was a company that thrived, and in 1996 became part of the Richemont Group, sitting alongside a number of other familiar luxury names, such as Cartier and Van Cleef & Arpels. Notable timepieces in the years since have included the Patrimony range, launched in 2000 and featuring the world’s thinnest watches at the time, measuring just 5.25mm thick. In 2003, a sports collection, Overseas, arrived, as well as Egèrie, a line exclusively for ladies. When Vacheron Constantin moved to a new, modern headquarter in Plan-les-Ouates, Geneva, in 2004, complete with a master watchmaker’s 40

workshop and boutique, it did not lose sight of its 250th anniversary the following year. To celebrate, it launched the Tour de L’Ile, the most complicated double-faced wristwatch ever made, with a price tag of around US$1 million, and also the Saint Gervais, which had a tourbillon and a permanent calendar, limited to 55 editions. Which brings us back to the pernickety subject of a 260th anniversary. Just 10 years on, after producing two stunning timepieces such as these, how can that be bettered? A challenge for current CEO Juan Carlos Torres, appointed in October 2005, and his team, and something other companies may shy away from, but as we have already discussed, Vacheron Constantin is not one to follow the rules. Instead, it has taken the challenge of marking 260 years head on, and at the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (SIHH) event in January 2015 unveiled its stunning Harmony collection. The range serves as a launchpad to five new highlyadvanced in-house movements, in development since 2008, with each presented inside a cushion-shaped

case. All of the watches they are fitted to are limited edition, with ‘260th anniversary’ engraved on the reverse, such as the Ultra-Thin Grande Complication Chronograph, with only 10 being made. Equally as stunning, and with twice as many available, is the Tourbillon Chronograph, with the standard Harmony Chronograph, Dual Time Small and Dual Time completing the line-up. Other highlights for 2015 include two additions to the brand’s Métiers d’Art collection, each with entirely hand-engraved movements, housed in platinum cases, with stunning designs and impressive power reserves. It shows that even after 260 years, there is no sign of slowing down, or a case of the brand finding it has nothing more to offer. After all it has brought to the industry, Vacheron Constantin continues to deliver, and the fact that it sees its anniversaries as a chance to do so makes them even more of an occasion. I’ve heard tales of Geneva events where people can’t get in the door, such is the lure of a ground-breaking diamond or jewellery collection. If you’re keen to bid, you must register first, and satisfy certain financial criteria. Contrary to popular belief, sales are not ‘invitation only’ – anybody can watch the drama unfurl. Indeed, I am shocked to learn that most people in the auction room are simply spectators – most buyers aren’t even present at the auctions. “They prefer to bid over the phone,” reveals Bennett. “They like to remain anonymous.” The next step towards total anonymity is internet bidding, a concept which Sothebys.com pioneered a few years ago. Participants can watch a live stream of the auction and bid real-time, or simply sit back and watch the saleroom action. The number of online bidders is ever-increasing – probably because people feel they’re less likely to get carried away than they are on the phone. However, it was still surprising news when Sotheby’s revealed its new online bidding platform in association with eBay last month. It’s aimed at middleweight collectors (most lots are valued under US$25,000), but is just as glossy and slick as you would expect from the brand. Sotheby’s Jewellery is embracing social media too: its new Instagram feed dazzles with photos of upcoming lots – including snaps of that emerald-cut diamond, mounted as a show-stopping ring, weighing down the hands of a fortunate

It’s fascinating to see such an iconic historical brand harness the power of social media, and although you won’t find Bennett tweeting from the auction room (“I’m the first to admit that Instagram is beyond me!”), it’s clear that the company has its eye on the future. Do they expect to find potential buyers among their followers, I ask? “Social media encourages awareness,” muses Bennett. “Not just brand awareness, but awareness of particular objects – things are being talked about, views are being exchanged. It grows on its own energy, so that in itself is invigorating.” I guess time will tell whether selfies will convert into sales. One thing’s for sure: the success of Sotheby’s Jewellery Division knows no bounds. Will this year’s figures prove as impressive as 2014’s? I’ve no doubt they will. Can Bennett continue to inspire and engage with his workshops and glittering social media stream? Naturally. And will the emerald-cut diamond reach a record price in New York on 21 April? Oh yes – you can bet your bottom dollar it will.
